Excellent lecturer & brand new professor this summer. He changed a lot of the labs and almost everything is new. One in-class presentation and each week had a writing assignment. Most of the lab work was learning by doing but my GSI was helpful with figuring stuff out. The final exam was kind of tough, but definitely recommend taking Dr. P.
His lectures were useless to me. He takes an entire hour explaining calculations the lab GSI explains in 10 minutes. The exams aren't bad and he gives sample questions that are basically what's going to be on the exam but the exams are worth as much as lab report, and there's more lab reports than exams, so focus more on the lab reportlab work.
Came off as kind of arrogant at first, but as the semester went on you could see that he was actually really sweet and helpful. Very straightforward, especially when it came to what would be on the exam. Definitely also my hottest professor by far.
Professor Poniatowski and CHEM 125 can be time consuming at time but isn't terrible. The lectures only meet once a week, so there's no excuse not to go. The lectures really aren't necessary, but they make you feel more prepared for the lab.
Dr. Poniatowski is always willing to give help, office hours are really helpful if you want to go over lab reports, random chem questions, or just talk about other things. He is very clear and knows how to conduct a space well. Exam review sessions have been helpful to me and I would recommend taking his section if you have to take Chem 125
The people saying this class was easy must be the same students who got a 5 on the AP and should have started in orgo instead. This class was a ton of work and the only reason I was able to do well was all of the extra office hours Dr. P held.
The lab reports took me more time than I thought a 2 credit class is worth. His lectures were pointless but his office hours were always very helpful. I wish he taught chem 130. I would have taken him in a second for that. He tries very hard to make sure his students understand the material.
Dr. P is a great teacher! Chem 125 was tough because my GSI was absolutely terrible--literally the worst! Dr. P on the other hand was excellent and I hope to have him again as a teacher! Go to his office hours and he will help you with Chem 130, Chem 125, pretty much anything! He was extremely flexible and made time for his students!
Poniatowski is a great lecturer, who is very helpful and humorous. His review sessions and review packets really prepare you for the exams. His lectures aren't mandatory. But, they are helpful in achieving a better understanding of the lab and in writing the lab reports. If you go to lectures, you'll be more than prepared.
Dr. P makes the material manageable and he kept my attention during lecture. His review sessions were awesome and very helpful for preparing for the exams. He genuinely wants you to learn and appreciates effort. There's often a little humor too, which is appreciated. Don't worry if your GSI is bent on making you fail. You'll pass if you try.
Poniatowski is awesome. His lectures can get a little boring sometimes, but his enthusiasm and cuteness makes up for it!
His exams are easy. Exactly the same as what he gave on practice exams. However, lab reports are annoying, but the grading of lab reports really depends on GSI. Choose GSI wisely. Overall Dr. Poniatowski is really nice.
He is a really nice guy and a lot of people like him. However, I think his teaching is all over the place and what he says is sometimes irrelevant to the actual problems. For a lab he will explain every step that you can read on your own in the manual and he won't explain the equations that are necessary to use in post labs. Misses key info
Dr. Poniatowski was extremely helpful and made sure that if you came to office hours, you left with a much better understanding of the material than when you came in. Grading scheme was a little funky, and didn't necessarily reflect what was written in the syllabus, but you if you intend to, you will leave his class mastering the material.
This class is way more effort than a 2 credit class should be. Lab reports are really long and grading really depends on GSIs. However, Dr. P is a really nice guy, but is lectures are fairly useless. The exams are really easy because they are exactly like the practice exams.
He held SO many office hours and review sessions, he was really accessible. You could tell he is a new lecturer (he would often have to pause and clarify things), but he should get better with age.
This was his first time teaching this course and he did a great job. This class is a lot of work regardless of the instructor. I highly recommend taking this class with Dr. Poniatowski!
Poniatowski ended up being one of my favorite profs at U of M. If you need help, he's more than willing to help, & he really knows what he's talking about.
Dr. Poniatowski is awesome, does parkour on the white boards, and is a seriously good lecturer. He is never condescending about questions, encourages students, and is really helpful.
He is a good professor and very eager to help.
Two written exams each worth 15% of your final grade. The bulk of the grades come from the laboratory sections which are led by a GSI. Very available after class, via email, and during office hours. Lectures go over the lab procedure and he'll go over what calculations you'll need to do for the post-lab report. He's a very funny and personable guy
Dr. Poniatowski is awesome. He is very good at what he does. He greatly encourages participation, and is 110% willing to delve further into an aspect a student may not fully understand. If I wasn't on a money budget, I'd take it again for kicks and giggles. He's that good. Take his class.
Alex is a good lecturer, you can tell he knows his stuff and he wants you to learn. Overall, it wasn't too bad. The reason this class can be pretty hard is the GSIs. I got one of the toughest GSIs and he was a really tough grader. Otherwise, manageable.
Dr. Poniatowski is an amazing professor and taught a superb class. His lectures are clear, funny, and relatable. He cares about his students. His review packets are harder than the actual exams, but an answer key would be nice. Fantastic class all around. p.s. He is crazy good at drawing dotted lines on the blackboard.
Dr. Poniatowski is one of the best professors/teachers I've ever had. He is a genius, and he makes chemistry very clear. He is also pretty funny, which made his lectures interesting. You don't have to go to them in order to pass, but it was super helpful. I wish he would teach a philosophy class, because it would be awesome.
Dr. Poniatowski is a really cool guy, he's very considerate to the fact that we're all extremely busy and doesn't try to make this class a hassle because he cares more about whether we learn the concepts or not. The lectures were very helpful for the labs and I would recommend going to them, but you don't necessarily have to. Take his class!
Dr. Poniatowski is of the best teachers at this university. He is brilliant, concise, enthusiastic, and prophetic, and turned what could easily be a dry class into something I looked forward to each week. He cares that his students understand; as long as you're willing to sacrifice one hour of your week for an optional lecture, you will succeed.
your experience with this class depends entirely on your GSI. some liked it because they had good GSIs who weren't hard graders. others disliked because their GSI graded unnecessarily hard. if you get a bad GSI, it won't be a fun semester.
Alex was so helpful in passing chem lab. He was very friendly and approachable. He's cute which is just the bow on the present. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Poniatowski is an amazing guy. Really inspirational and cares about people. Don't really need to attend lectures, but I would go for the formal lab report lectures. Your grade will really depend on your GSI. If you think the grading is unfair, talk to poniatowski earlier rather than later as he can help you out. Super helpful in office hours
It is obvious that Dr. Poniatowski is passionate about chemistry and cares about his students. His lectures weren't mandatory, but I found them helpful. The exams aren't hard if you go to the review sessions he holds the day before. The GSI you have can make or break your lab experience. My GSI graded unnecessarily hard with no clear guidelines.
Dr. Poniatowski made it clear in the first lecture that he succeeds only if his students succeed, so he did everything in his power to help us get an A in the class. He has numerous office hours and is willing to stop class to answer questions. He held midterm review sessions, in which he basically went over the material that would be on the test.
The weekly reports can get annoying but Prof. Poniatowski is amazing. His lectures are entertaining and he isn't afraid to joke around with students during lecture which makes them go by quick. Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Poniatowski is an exceptional professor. The grading and harshness of grading mainly depends on your GSI, but Dr. P does everything he can to make sure you can succeed. Office hours are a great chance to further your understanding and ensure you're completing your report correctly. I just wish he taught other courses so I could have him again.
Dr. P, as I call him, was amazing. He was clearly enthusiastic about his work and made sure that he could do everything in his willpower to make you do well in the course. His office hours and lecture before exam day are helpful. Your GSI is the deciding factor, as if you have a good one,you should do well. Shame Dr. P teaches no other course.
Dr. P was an amazing teacher. He really got his point across during lecture, and held lots of office hours and review sessions. His passion for the subject made me want to be a chemist. ("This is the science of making new matter!") He really inspired me to work hard in the course with his motivational speech after the first exam, too.
Poni was so amazing I can barely put into words how much I enjoyed being in his class. He's super awkward, funny, and cute. His lectures are pretty dull but he's a very easygoing guy. He's really helpful in office hours and he wants everyone to do well in his class. Go to lecture if you want to know how to do the post labs.
Very solid lecturer and gave clear explanations. He really tries hard to make lectures worth your money & not boring. Sometimes he has a temper though over doors not being shut or blackboards not being erased but it's cuz he wants to provide the best learning experience for us so you gotta respect that. Tests are a little difficult but manageable.
One of the greatest things about Prof. Poniatowski is his willingness to help students outside of class, especially during office hours. He is patient and understanding and encouraging! In class, he is really low-key and explains the chemistry concepts in ways that are easily comprehensible. Great teacher and an amazing guy!
With heavy wit and extensive use of all three ginormous chalk boards, Dr. P will make little quips and insert his quiet, angry, sarcastic, pessimistic views on the world into the lab lecture and make your day just a little more enjoyable. He also is an excellent teacher over all and will go out of his way to answer your questions.
So Poniatowski gives the Chem125 LAB lectures which are basically previews for the next lab. These labs get pretty challenging and it seems like everyone is clueless. His lectures do help with the post-lab write ups. I will say though, he makes the material way more difficult than it needs to be in the way he explains basic chemistry concepts.
His lectures did not help with the labs at all. You're better off reading the lab manual. The lab practical at the end of the semester was also poorly explained and more difficult than it needed to be.
Prof P is an amazing chem 125 lecturer. He explains in detail everything that will be performed next lab and is always open for questions. Exams for the course are ridiculously hard and lab grade is also completely vulnerable depending on which GSI you get. Prof P doesn't have that much input, but his lectures were great!
This professor's lectures are centered around the lab that you are about to do. He basically tells you exactly what you need to do in the lab and what you need to cover in your lab report. The class is super hard and unpleasant, grading is really tough, but this professor isn't in charge of that, your GSI is. This professor makes it bearable.
Dr. Poniatowski is really funny and makes the chem lab concepts easy to understand. Go to lecture, do the prelabs, and read through the procedures prior to lab and you will do fine. Midterm was more challenging than expected, and the lab practical was brutal, but your grade is curved against your section so just put a lot of effort into lab reports
I thoroughly enjoyed professor Poniatowski's lectures. He was always funny, and made chemistry very understandable, even for someone who might not be as advanced in the subject.
Poniatowski was a great guy who was an awesome lecturer even though the lab that accompanied his lecture was a completely pointless nightmare. He's the type of guy that you want to be bros with.
Lectures are very interesting and helpful to understand the material. Lab accompanying course is AWFUL - lots of work outside lab, insufficient materials, disorganized GSIs. The lab practical final was killer, and most of the labs just don't make sense.
While his attending lectures isn't actually that necessary for completing the labs, you still don't want to miss the opportunity to hear him speak. He seems exceptionally kind and caring, and he makes learning the lab procedures way more interesting than it probably is. Also, it's always entertaining to see him climb up the chalk board ;)
I have had Poniatowski for two lab classes and both times have thought he was hilarious and passionate about chemistry. He is very fair when it comes to expectations: for example, he knew that no one wanted to do iClickers and so he changed the grading system.
Didn't have much contact with Poniatowski since I had him for Orgo 2 lab lecture. He was pretty funny and clearly explained important concepts, as well as grading criteria. Something I really liked was that he feels the need to do a lot of practice problems to help explain concepts - made it much easier to study for the tests.
Poniatowski can be kinda rude. People say he is a decent teacher because he gets bare minimum done for the job but you still get an ok grade.
I learned a lot from his class and enjoyed the challenge- he taught the material in a way where we actually learned the concepts instead of just memorizing rules and formulas. He's very into what he does but doesn't put up with trouble from anyone, so try to avoid messing around in lecture. I found him to be one of the best instructors so far.
He does not explain the subjects clear. His voice is so boring and he becomes angry easily. Don't take this class with him.
It is clear that Poniatowski knows a great deal about this subject, but often seems to forget that none of us have a degree in chemistry and rarely spends time explaining concepts. He also has random temper tantrums that are very distracting and condescending. He never cleans the chalkboards properly which is super annoying.
I met two kinds of classmate in chem 215 during spring term: those who wanted things done for them, and those who wanted to be pushed to do better. If you are the former, stay away. If you are the latter, I highly recommend taking this course with Poniatowski.
I've never seen a instructor who's five minutes late for almost all the lectures and office hours, making the concepts more confusing, and not willing to help students. Orgo isn't easy. If you want to learn something from the lectures instead of googling everything and learning it all by yourself at home, then don't take it with him!
Taking 215 with Poniatowski after having Nolta for 210 was a little bit of culture shock. He really makes you work on your own, which is fine I guess since it is college.
Dr. Poniatowski was incredibly understanding and one of the kindest professors I've ever had. Lectures are not mandatory, but he is more than available to answer questions and work with you individually about course concerns. If you haven't had a lab course, this class will be challenging, but it is not a reflection of the professor. He's great.
He's purely a lecturer. However, he is hilarious even though it involves chemistry. Personally, I despise chemistry, but he jokes non stop. He also climbs up to write on the triple decker board in the lecture hall. The topics he teaches can be hard, but he does well teaching it.
Attending Dr. Poniatowski's lectures can help you with post lab manuscripts and worksheets, but attendance is optional and honestly it's not worth the time. Labs aren't very hard but the the out of class work is time consuming. Midterm exam and lab practical are really easy. Basically it's an easy A if you get a good GSI and put in the work.
I've only met Dr. Poniatowski once a week for lectures on upcoming experiments. Despite rarely meeting him, I like the fact that he's approachable after lectures to ask questions. Besides, the exam review he held before the midterm was really helpful. The only thing I wish he could improve is using slides for lectures alongside writing on the board
Poniatowski is a really good and dynamic lecturer. However, the class itself is insanely annoying and has much more homework than you'd expect. I really recommend not taking the lab if you don't have to.
Dr. Poniatowski was a decent lecturer, but he gave impossible lab quizzes that entailed assigning NMR peaks. The class was generously curved, but the lab quizzes were a total crapshoot and weren't really an accurate assessment of our learning. Honors Cup was a lot of fun.
Dr. Poniatowkski's lectures are somewhat boring, confusing, and useless. Dr. Poniatowski is extremely sarcastic, rude, and doesn't seem to really care about any of his students. If you email him with a problem of yours, he'll most likely respond curtly and sarcastically, making no help effort to actually help you.
Love that his lectures were optional, only lab was required. Made going to his class less stressful, and he offers more office hours than any other prof. I've had at U-M.
I dont really like this guy, he's pretty annoying, but he does describe labs decently well. I just dont think there's a point going to his lecture because the GSI tells you everything anyways
Alex tells you exactly how to do all of the post labs in his lectures. They're not mandatory, which many people take advantage of, but going and taking notes will save much time when doing the tedious lab reports. This class is greatly GSI based, so be a suck up to them and utilize Alex's office hours!
This guy teaches intro jiu-jitsu on Saturday mornings, and has really helped my understanding of not only individual techniques, but teaches big concepts as well. I feel like it's often something that's lacking, it can be overwhelming as a novice, but he helps make complicated things simpler. Would recommend.
The lecture is not the most important part of the class, but they really help prepare you for lecture. The lecture goes by quickly and he tries to make it as interactive for the students as possible. The manuscripts really helped to prepare me for scientific writing and he is available to help with them.
Class is very GSI based so if you get a good one you should be fine. Poniatowski is super approachable and answers questions if you have doubts. He explains how to do the lab during lecture but it isn't mandatory and is only really helpful for writing the manuscript. Overall it's a great intro chem lab class!
He never cares about his students and if you email him, he will try to avoid your question if your problem might cause some inconvenience to him. He never put his student ahead, only thinks about how to avoid putting effort into the class. Also, his class was really boring and useless so choose another teacher if you can to avoid wasting your time
I started the semester hating chemistry, but went to office hours to get help with the lab reports. Dr. Poniatowski offers office hours three days a week, and it's a good thing, too, I woudn't have passed without him being so accessible. Thanks for the extra help!
Dr. Poniatowski was a great lecturer. I was always so engaged and found myself laughing and smiling the entire lecture instead of being confused/lost. His office hours were always extremely helpful and he really made an effort to get to know each individual student. He responded to emails very quickly and usually included a personal story. Great!!
Dr. Poniatowski is definitely the best 215 professor. He is incredibly helpful through emails, speaks about chemistry in a way that makes it waaay more interesting, explains everything with a means to make it exceedingly clear, and his lectures are always hilarious. Incredible class!
After taking Chem 210 with Nolta, I thought she would be a hard professor to top, but Poniatowski really exceeded my expectations. His lectures are super easy to follow however his voice tends to be a bit monotone which has led me to doze off occasionally.
Dr. Poniatowski is a very nice guy and an amazing professor. He explains content very thoroughly!!
Poniatowski wasn't the best prof. Lectures were either too slow or too fast and confusing. During office hours he went on tangents that weren't really helpful. Also, I think he'd forget we only know what he has taught us so far because sometimes he'll give us an explanation for a problem that we just never learned. Reading the txtbk isn't worth it.
Poniatowski made online CHEM 215 way better than I was afraid it would be. Would recommend.
Dr. Poniatowski made Orgo very enjoyable. It is definitely a hard class, but his explanations were very clear. He was very easy to understand and he made the challenging concepts seem easy. I would highly recommend him CHEM215.
Poniatowski did a better job than most Profs. with the online course format. Things were straightforward without becoming too much, and there was a reliable weekly rhythm to the course. I would have preferred to take the lab in person, but I was pleasantly surprised how smoothly the online version worked.
Taking this class online was an amazing experience! The GSI was accessible and easy to talk to, the asynchronous lectures weren't too much to handle, and the way the course was planned out was very nice. I also loved reading his announcements - they were so heartwarming!
This course is so GSI dependent, but Poniatowski is a good dude and has your back.
I was worried about this class, since it was an online lab during the pandemic, but it was really chill and I learned a lot.
The course is pretty dependent on the GSIs. I only watched his lectures a couple times to prepare for the labs, but they weren't really necessary. I never interacted with Poniatowski, but he seemed nice in his lectures. Maybe this course would be different if lectures weren't asynch and online.
Easy A class. Watch a lecture ahead of lab, perform experiment in class, write about results. Like clockwork.
Honestly I never really went to this lecture but the few times that I did he seemed like a cool guy. Pretty easy class overall - watch/read lecture of lab, do lab, write ups. Nothing more nothing less.
This is one of the most passive agressive humans I have ever met, I genuinly think this man has no soul, and every interrest I had in chemistry was destroyed. If you need help in the class, dont even bother emailing him, and dont even THINK about asking for extra credit. The lectures before the lab to not help at all. Good luck xoxo <3
He's a really nice instructor who cares about students. Chem 125/126 is very GSI dependent, but showing up to Poniatowski's lectures helped a ton with lab instructions and calculations.
Good guy, funny and welcoming. Taught tough material well.
He is so funny and very entertaining to watch. He made lectures fun. You won't interact with him often, though- this course depends entirely on your GSI.
Dr. Poniatowski is a cool guy. His CHEM 125 lectures were very comprehensible and easy to understand because he would explain the lab and chemistry reaction/concepts anthropomorphically. Though, this course is really dependent on which GSI you get. Dr. Poniatowski isn't the one that grades your lab reports, the GSI you get grades your labs.
Dr. Poniatowski was one of my favorite professors this semester, he's a good guy who is clearly very passionate about chem. He's super funny in my opinion, and I went to his lectures purely because he knows how to keep students entertained. This course is EXTREMELY GSI-dependent though, so beware of getting a strict one.
Alex Poniatowski lectured the lab content/theory for CHEM 130 each week, but it was difficult to follow his phrases/instructions. Going to his lectures really never helped, because he would talk so much about the theoretical stuff that lab protocol was really never explained. He often went off on tangents connecting chemistry to unrelated things.
Dr. P is a breath of fresh air in the Umich organic instructor suite. I come to class inspired by his cautiously sardonic but always resonant words of wisdom about chemistry & life. Enough time spent with Dr. P makes you realize what's important in both of these two domains! Remember when doing an acyl transfer reaction: Ought it collapse? It ought
I don't love doing chemistry labs, but Professor Poniatowski was probably the best lecturer I've had. He is funny, helpful, and clear about what is going to happen in labs. There is no textbook, and your lab experience will differ greatly between different GSIs, but Professor Poniatowski is a great lecturer that really made the labs easier.
Dr. Poniatowski made lectures interesting and funny. The labs themselves were not super difficult and usually, you would end up with a decent grade as long as you did the work and showed up to class. I don't like chemistry, but this lab was fun to take mostly because of him.
Poniatowski's lectures were NOT helpful for Chem 215 (Orgo II). I could never follow along his lectures with textbooks. Always left lecture more confused. My scores improved so much when I started watching another professor.
I was really not looking forward to taking this course, but Poniatowski made it more accessible than I thought it could be. He was up-front about the course being tough, but also tried very hard to help students believe in themselves.
Great proffesor who always makes you laugh. Can be difficult to follow in lectures sometimes, but just pay attention.
Dr. Poniatowski makes chemistry like what it looks like on tv. He is hilarious and never bores the class. He is open to questions, is practical, and very understandable. Most underrated teacher in chem dept.
If you're taking Chem 125/126, don't skip out on Dr. Poniatowski's lectures! You might be confused while you are there, but once you get back and are working on your assignments, the lecture notes you have will be super helpful. They really cut down assignment time. He's also just a funny/nice guy, so I think it's worth it.
I thought he was absolutely hilarious but didn't explain the best. He would basically just draw pictures on the board of the lab and kind of explain stuff. After a while, I stopped going to lectures and just read the lab protocols, and that worked perfectly fine.
Lectures were optional but usually helped with lab assignments. Poniatowski was funny and his lectures were worth going to usually. The class really depends on your GSI though and they vary greatly.
I took Chem 215 with him he is really funny but also explains complicated material in a way that makes it easier to understand. The lectures also are geared towards what will be on the exam. 10/10
Dr. Poniatowski was very funny and relatable. Like most lectures for lab classes, his lecture was totally pointless and skippable, but Poniatowski himself was very entertaining and a great teacher. If you care enough to go to his lecture, he is worth it.
Dr. Poniatowski's pre-lab lectures are the highlight of my week, simply because he reminds me why I'm doing all of this in the first place. His passion and attentiveness are hard to match.
Professor frequently lost his temper in lectures and would incessantly complain about receiving questions from students. Lectures are boring, but mandatory to obtain full pre-lab content. Professor calls out students in the lecture and was extremely negative throughout the entire semester.
Poniatowski is an old-shool dude. His lectures would fire me up to get going in the lab. He had a crank old guy demeanor, and would get irritated when students would carry on personal conversations in the large lecture hall. Highly recommend paying attention and taking good notes.
Simply attend lecture and take note of the key equations. How hard could it be?
One of my favorite professors. He explains things really well and in a funny and interesting way. Definitely recommend
He tried to make lectures interesting with jokes and examples. The class was easy to get an A in if you attended the lectures and obviously the labs.
Like every CHEM lab, it's your GSI that makes or breaks the course. Had heard bad experiences from my friends that I wasn't having at all. Furthermore, prof was nice and held clear lectures. Manuscripts, pre-labs, and post-labs are your grades (+ attendance of course). If you get Bishnu, count yourself blessed.
All of the grading was done by GSIs. All of his lecture notes were posted so attendance wasn't mandatory. He did lose his temper a few times on students during lecture as well as I witnessed in office hours. Overall an easy course if you have a chill GSI.
Made it interesting to learn chemistry. Labs aren't the most fun course for sure, but it was easy to pay attention to his lectures. He made them like he was telling a story.
Professor Poniatowski is unprofessional and often rude. He got angry multiple times during lectures and seemed uninterested in teaching. His emails were rude. Grading is done entirely by GSIs, so your grade depends on their standards. The workload is overwhelming for 2 credits. I would not recommend taking this class with him.
I took this class as a senior...big mistake, I should have taken care of it sooner. It was full of naive freshmen who are still learning how to college. Literally the easiest science class I had at umich, but don't make the same mistake I did in putting it off too long unless you want to be reminded how helpless you were as a freshman.
He is a very odd man but I think he's nice. He has a temper, but I never hated going to his lectures. He never grades anything directly (only GSIs).
Orgo II WN 2024. Dr Poniatowski is a very pleasant man. He jokes sometimes during lectures and caters to the engineering students quite well. Reading the book becomes especially important for Orgo II, yet both Tuttle and Poniatowski do a good job explaining material. More desirable to take 215 in the winter than fall, because fall class is harder.
Lecture was not required because he posts pictures online. Your GSI matters; mine was amazing and made the whole process much easier (shout out to Soumalya). Manuscripts every other week were annoying but other than that, the class itself was an easy A. We usually finished lab much earlier than the designated time.
The lectures themselves were fine, but Poniatowski did not respect students. He constantly made unfunny "kids are always on their phones these days" jokes and came off a bit rude. He discouraged reaching out to him for help and was incredibly condescending. I can't endorse a disrespectful teacher even if they're decent at lecturing.
Take good notes during lecture, and do the readings. Go to his office hours! Ask good questions, and you'll get good answers. This is the way.
Professor Poniatowski is a hilarious lecturer, though his explanations can be a bit confusing at times. Attending his classes is worth it - the lecture notes really help with assignments. unstuck AI was a game-changer for my study prep.
Love Poniatowski!! He is great if you already have the basics down and would like to see examples that will be on the exam, I also like how he thoroughly explains things.
The lectures are packed with content regarding the chemistry lab, but he breaks them down and simplifies them to better understand. He also cracks jokes and makes you very prepared for lab that week.
Great lecturer and teacher. Really helpful in Orgo 2 if you get ahead in textbook then attend lectures. Overall, love him and he made a hard class manageable.
Though he did not give many lectures, Dr. Poniatowski was a good prof. That being said, there were points where he was somewhat disrespectful to students in his office hours.
He was so patient and responsive and gave great answers to all of my questions both in person and via email. I was nervous about this course but I found it quite enjoyable despite how tough it was.
Go to his review sessions! He answers everyone's questions and makes sure students understand the way to think about and approach the problems to study. Highly recommended.
Good professor/lecturer, but spends a lot of class time that could be spent teaching instead chastising students who missed class/are watching lecture recordings. Although attendance should be prioritized for this class, if you get sick, it's not the end of the world because lectures are recorded. Use the textbook, and go to open discussions!!
Professor P. made it a joy to come to class, and I HATE chemistry classes. Definitely recommend.
I was seriously impressed by this prof's office hours and review sessions. Most organized and helpful I've seen.
Amazing Professor to learn organic chemistry from, he made it fun and manageable.
if you have any will to live, u won't after taking him. Idek if i'll end w a C at this point. worse teacher here, if u want to feel worthless take him. The practice exams are NO WHERE near the exams. He doesn't even teach what will be on the exam… he doesn't teach period. You can tell he's only here for research.
Was very accessible out side of class, held three office hours each week, including a review session every Monday night (which was nice because it was the day before the exams). The practice exams were super helpful, especially the video explainer content he created. You can tell his job is to teaching he doesn't have any research responsibilities.
Although he's a good lecturer, the format in which he teaches the class is unnecessarily confusing and annoying to follow. He's a rude guy who doesn't seem to understand that students have many classes and puts in very little extra effort for the class past lectures. Hope he puts in effort in the future and makes handouts or anything for students.
The GOAT. The way he talked about chemistry made sense to me, and I didn't think I'd like chemistry. Now I'm going to take CHEM 420 with him next semester.
He always told us what would be on exams, never said to ignore things during class. You will have to self-study a lot, because this is college. Was very available and answered all questions during office hours though, several per week.
Dr. Poniatowski is a great professor for those with some baseline knowledge of chemistry. I remembered a lot of the topics, but honestly you're probably fine either way as long as you put in the work. Exams are not as bad as people make them out to be. He is not as detailed as some of the other professors but I think he still does a great job!
Chem 130 student: Poniatowski's lectures were overall useful and consistent with the materials covered on exams. I found this class to be average difficulty, and you do have to actively practice concepts in order to understand them. I never felt the need to use other professors' lectures. If you're more of an independent student I recommend him!
Coming from an unchallenging background in school, this was an extreme upgrade tin learning how to push myself. Take if you're willing to try to learn difficult things.
He wrote the practice exams and dress rehearsal, so it definitely reflected the content he puts on the real thing. His "walk-through" of the dress rehearsal is him sharing all of his own thoughts as he takes the exam in real time. I went to every lecture to keep myself engaged, as well ad read the textbook because multiple perspectives are helpful.
I found Dr. Poniatowski condescending and rude. I stopped going to his lectures because he spent so much time yelling at students through the recording that it wasn't worth my time to go. He didn't give many study materials (3 practice exams), and his explanations weren't helpful. Use textbook and take the class with another prof if you're able to.
This guy really gets it. I'm here to be educated, and he offered a challenging course I could apply myself to. Growth mindest, glad I came to Michigan. Highly recommend.
Great prof.
I genuinely tried learning from him within lectures but really struggled to comprehend the concepts through his teaching. He struggles to explain concepts and jumps from one thing to another without explanation. Entertaining guy, but did not learn anything from his lectures and ended up watching other lecturers/going to other lecturers.
I was in a different section of chem 130 but after attending his reviews sessions, they were so nicely organized, I started going to his class instead. The review sessions every week helped me get ready for teh final.
Dr. Poniatowski is very kind and approachable to ask after class. His lectures cover most of the concepts, but sometimes in his lectures, he goes over something else that isn't as important for the exams. Also, they made Chem 130 way harder than previous years. As long as you study constantly and attend his lectures, you should finish with an A!
answered all of my questions by email and office hours, great guy
Not great at all. I would end up going to Bartley's lectures (still not great :) ) because they seemed like they would be more organized. The chalkboard was not very clear. He would go on tangents about different topics and he would talk way too fast. He was extremely confusing and not great at making things clear. Paying too much to teach myself!
He is so boring that everyone falls asleep, and also he gives no valuable practice and the exams are much harder and material that is not learned.
lectures are very unclear, had to teach myself everytime
Had to teach myself everything cause he was so bad.
Had to teach myself chem 130 ... choose wolfe
Didn't cover multiple topics that appeared on the final exam; not written by him but still, anyone who had him was screwed for a good 20-30 points.
Honestly this was my second time taking 215 and I wouldn't have passed without going to his lectures. I know this because I failed the first time lol Truly passionate about chemistry and it is contagious
He was very funny and engaging, but I often found the way he introduced new materials confusing. He often didn't give actual definitions and instead led by giving random examples. I read the textbook but would still find his lectures unhelpful. Halfway I actually decided to watch Bartley's lectures instead which I found much more informative.
Seriously underrated, his exams were pretty fair besides one or two hard questions every time. His office hours are so helpful too, do not hesitate to ask him questions! His lectures are also very structured in terms of what topics he will go over and what reading you should have done by then. The practice exams are very similar to the real one.
A.P is a great lecturer if stories help you better understand the content. I personally did not feel as though this was beneficial to me, however I can see where it might help one of you readers! Alex get's a lot of hate- Do NOT pair Chem and Bio in your first semester if you haven't taken AP classes. I felt behind my peers all semester!
Despite what other people are saying after the final exam today, I thought he was a great lecturer. As long as you read the textbook and follow at a good pace, he reinforces a lot of the content in lecture. He is a funny person who keeps lectures light while also getting across the information. Just be sure to read the textbook and go to lecture!
He was a very good professor. Funny, sometimes rude to students who asked questions.
Makes stories that help you to comprehend the content. This class- in any section- is full of kids who have taken AP Chem already and can often be frustrating when you feel like you're behind, cause the truth is you might be,, and there is nothing wrong with that! Dr. P was very engaging in lecture and had a way of making boring days a bit funny.
His lectures were not always the most engaging because when he did examples, they took a long time and were not very difficult. It also didn't seem like he was on the same pace as other professors, so I had to teach myself a good amount to stay on top of homework.
i ended up just skipping his lecture and going to bartley's instead for the majority of the time. he's funny but is not good at teaching chem unfortunately
Funny guy, and chill
He's funny and lectures aren't a drag to go to, but man he's lazy. Was super behind on exam 3 content and also makes very bland exams.
Nice guy, clearly very passionate about chemistry. I found his lectures to be engaging and his dry humor entertaining. On top of this, he was always willing to talk through any questions during office hours/after class.
Although he teaches in a more old-fashioned style with a blackboard, I found that his style of teaching was very intuitive and the content he covered reinforced the assigned reading material for each class. Attended lecture basically every time until last month or so, they were good, allowed me to succeed in the class, not hard if you show up.
Just wasn't very good at planning out his lessons and somehow managed to not cover multiple topics within each exam.
I was low key surprised our exams had citations to journal articles but then I realized he was teaching us real life chemistry. It was inspirational to think about how the stuff we learned in class applied in drugs.
Very knowledgeable and a great lecturer. He's super entertaining and funny and from what I've heard about the other professors, he's the best at preparing you for exam.
If you wanna know everything you need for exams and you have Poniatowski, you NEED to read the textbook. He doesn't go over everything. He also goes on a lot of tangents that frequently are not on topic. I would recommend going to Bartley's lectures, as he is more on topic and (at least for this year) actually wrote the tests.
What a ride. I barely passed 210 and was absolutely dreading this class. So I really locked in and during the term everything sort of clicked. I owe it to Poniatowski's lectures, he really brings his passion for chemistry to class.
Lectures barely reflect content that is important for the exam or the textbooks. Funny and has a passion for chemistry but starts talking about irrelevant information most of the time in lecture. Chalkboard notes were a bit confusing. If you want to inquire about increased difficulty about the class or exams, be prepared to be called out by him.
The fact that he is the harshest grader gives him a 2 by itself. I feel as if he made difficult exams with low means and did not lower the threshold for an A at all. If you want receive a good grade, do not take orgo 2 with him. He will make you regret it
spends more time ranting and complaining about students than teaching also cannot lecture for the his life, his lecture attendance dropped by 3/4th after like the first three weeks
Dr.Poniatowski is a great lecturer and has very engaging classes. Tests are definitely fair if you attend class, as almost everything covered on the tests is covered thoroughly in class. Ultimately, you get what you put into the class, and for the most part, I don't think the backlash for this year's final is justified, especially against him.
His Wednesday night review sessions saved my grade! He answered every question and showed how to do all of the homework problems.
DON'T fall behind. Make sure to read the textbook and complete all practice problems possible leading up to exam. Exam 2 was diabolical but he made up for it with a very easy final. Use your drop wisely and study early. Lecture doesn't prepare you for the complexity on the exams so make sure to do the EQs and practice problems.
Overhated professor. I found enjoyment in his lectures (but sometimes he complains too much), and I thought that most of his exam q's were fair. This is a hard class, and A's are never gifted, no matter the professor. Yet, he does more than most professors, like creating exam review videos, and people still complain! He's also a pretty funny guy
I enjoyed the chalkboard method. I like how he didn't just do chem problems at us in lecture, he saved those for office hours, and he fully explained topics during lecture. My only complaint is that the aktiv chemistry software isn't lined up with the lecture schedule. That turned out to be very frustrating every week. -FA25 telluric acid victum
Dr. Poniatowski is an engaging lecturer, but would sometimes explain things in a way that made them more confusing. Read the textbook and do the homework if you want to fully grasp concepts. Exams are difficult (as a telluric acid victim) and you will have to work to get an A, but it's definitely possible and the grading system is pretty forgiving.
Dr. Poniatowski is enthusiastic as a professor and keeps a lively class room. He is very professional and respectful to students. His lectures are packed with material, and if you aren't a morning person you should keep up with the workbook problems and the lecture recordings. The course is very exam heavy, and the EQ's are very useful.
Great lecturer who kept the material engaging and interesting. Seems to really want the best out of his students and is very approachable. If you're looking for which prof to take for Chem 130, I highly recommend Poniatowski.
I really liked Poniatowski. His lectures were helpful but sometimes topics that were heavily tested were brushed off. For Chem 130 exams they tell you to answer with 2 sig figs but I get points off when I put “45.” Anyway sometimes he can be all over the place and the lectures seemed time wasteful but he is entertaining.
Overall, I enjoyed him. Just make sure to show up to lecture as he likes students who do that rather than watching remote. His exams were well balanced I felt although a lot of people didn't like exam 2. Final was very light which was nice of him. My only critique is that he was a little aimless in exam 3 but fun teacher to watch.
Poniatowski is super funny, and he lectures well. Just go to lectures and engage. Exams were a bit tough this year, but I skipped lectures a lot, so that's my fault. Overall, he's a good professor.
I went to the first few lectures, they were alright, but they seemed to be a bit slow and cover less material than other professors. He is a great guy, but I ended up watching the lecture recordings from another professor instead.
