A little to hung up on Gladiator, the movie that is
lots and lots of reading
EXCELLENT INSTRUCTOR...LIGHT READING LOAD...VERY INFORMATIVE
He never lets us down! A total engaging professor!
AWESOME PROF... very engaging... taking Russian History right now, TOTALLY ROCKS

This teacher is the best history prof around -caused me to take a degree in Hist
the greatest history teacher i ever had
Overly conceptual, repetitive and uninteresting lectures. Very boring class.
Very interesting can sometimes be a little inflexible.
Good teacher but his participation marks are very random and unfair.
not very engaging lectures, however he seems to know the topic at hand. A very hard marker when it comes to the essays. be prepared to write alot and at a 4th year university level to achieve even a B.

excellent prof, lectures are awesome and very in depth. midterm was right out of his notes. very approchable for help. if u do all the readings and participate in lectures your guarenteed a high mark
not a very good prof. lectures are boring and he goes way too fast. assigns random participation marks.

This guy is so conceited. Out of all the classes I've taken, this one was the worst. He gives very random participation marks and marks way too hard for a first year level. He also puts his own point of view on topics way too much. The class was cold.
The real deal. If your'e a slacker or expect to get credit for smiling take another course.
Tough essay marker. Bit inflexible. But engaging enough.
not fair in terms of how participation marks are distributed, he clearly favours certain students. All the people I know who have taken classes with him agree with me and think he is way too full of himself to ever be a good teacher.
Arrogant, inflexible. He is also fairly interesting and demanding. So, if you want to learn something and not just take an easy course he is a decent prof. It is funny that he has this total ego in class but won't look students in the eye outside class.
Very knowledgable and interesting. His material is primarily based on his lectures so its important you are there every class and are quick to understand what he is teaching. This also makes tests a little difficult. Very interesting if you like history.
Really good lectures, always go to lectures! Kinda biased, I disagree with him a bit, but he's still pretty good. Marks really quite tough, be carefull. And yeah, he is a bit arrogant I suppose, DONT make fun of Serbians around him.
great class, knowledgable and helpful
A bit demanding, but fair. Be prepared to read and participate.
I didnt like him at all, the worst teacher I've had at kwantlen. He doesn't provide notes he just talks all class and most of his exam questions are based on the lectures so write everything down. And he is an extremely tough essay marker, beware.
really good teacher, he is a kind hard marker but is very fair, he is really interesting and loves what he is teahing, i would recommend his classes to everyone.
Not impressed at all. I honestly believe he marks the essays unfairly and doesn't know proper grammar. He also disturbutes participation marks very unfairly, if I were you I would not take any of his courses!
Good guy with an interesting class. Not super clear on what he wants on essay exam questions but he marks accordingly and the term paper is not hard at all. Take him because he keeps you interested.
AWESOME teacher....so interesting and passionate about his topics. i highly suggest his russian history course....he is very intense...so take notes, and study for exams
I loved taking Alex's courses. He's a great teacher and I learned so much! His marking is tough, but being in his class made up for it.
Super-interesting guy. Hard, but a really good lecturer.
kinda interesting...but not really. talks way to fast so you dont get all the notes you need. ALOT of readings for his class. look in the dictionary for hard marker and there is his picture!
Right now! go and change your class right now! he's not afraid to give out 1s & 2s to you on oral presentations worth 10% of your grade!! he talks way too fast and never repeats himself!! his pop quizes are too vague and unless you wanna read 60 pgs....
This guy is hard. I mean hard. I love History and have gotten an A in every history class before, I flunked this class. He is witty but thats about all the class has to offer. Really tough marker.
Has a lot of background knowledge, having grown up in eastern Europe. A challenging marker.
Alex is an amazing teacher! He expects a lot of his students, so take VERY detailed notes and prepare for inclass essays! His Russian history course is amazing! He challenges his students and makes them question their beliefs/assumptions about history.
Alex is a great teacher. As long as you do the required readings you'll be fine. If you dont understand something, he's always available. You just need to prove yourself to him. This isnt highschool, kids. He's not going to hold your hand...
Unclear teacher, doesnt know how to write and condradics himself by saying that its not much work compared to other history classes but he gives more than enough reading material for a beginning course. The outline of the course is confusing to follow. Alex needs to be more organized.
A decent and interesting prof. If you can't spell like or have no clue what course you are in, like the previous person, then you will get what you deserve.
On one hand,I would only refer Popovich to students with a high understanding of vocabularies. His lectures are hard to understand without any previous experience in history. Taking his class is like going for your masters or phd. On the other hand, he is a very good teacher.
Interesting and witty lectures; they are to the point and there is no guessing what you need to know for the tests. He isnt boring and tries to make the class engaging. Hes not the easiest, but all around a good class. My only complaint is that he is not very approachable/reluctant to help...
great guy, knows what he's talking about...best part of class was watching him debate with the creationists in the class, he's a libertarian, a evolutionist and an atheist, really funny guy, talks really fast though
Take Popovich's class only if you are interested. Has a lot of great material and examples that he provides in his speeches. Very interesting and knowledgeful, however, if your taking his class just for credits, youll definetly fail
Worst Teacher I have EVER had in my Life! He doesn't deserve to teach. Not at all helpful and weighs 15% of mark on participation! Showing up to class gets you nothing in participation. I WILL NEVER TAKE ANOTHER COURSE WITH HIM AGAIN! Go ahead and waste your money if you choose a course with him!
Hard but fair. He's a great teacher, and is pretty studly too.
Great prof! Hard marker, but also appreciates hard work. Make sure you know your stuff and arn't just trying to ****. Very helpful and intelligent. Makes complex material easier to understand, especially if history isn't your field of study. Be ready to work hard to earn a good mark in his class and try to actively participate in discussions.
Great Teacher! Hard on marking, but if you partcipate in class its easy marks as its work 10% of your mark. Great Teacher, have had him 4 times. Expect to work for your grade, but you'll learn from him. Has his set opinons but lets the class express theirs.
Alex knows his stuff and is a great and interesting prof but he is not the easiest teacher. If you have no background to one of his courses, bring a tape recorder as he talks real fast and notetaking becomes strenuous on your wrist. Overall great guy, not that approachable but he is fair.
teaches a lot of relevant information but be prepared for embarrassement during your presentation as he will ask questions while you are trying to present.
He is very rude! Interupts during presentations, and complains that no one participates, but every time you say something he will shoot you down. Lectures are very fast, jump around, and he tends to speak in a muttering monotone. I was very disappointed with him, and he is very unapproachable. If you want to feel stupid...take his class.
Alex is a great teacher. His marks are fair, and his lectures are thorough. Other people have said that he is not that approachable, but I disagree. You can joke around with him, and ask him about his garden....he strives to be a great botanist.
I've had Alex three times, and do not regret it. People whine that he interrupts their presentation, while just wait until you do one at a business meeting, you'll get interrupted there too. I think he's a fair marker, if you try to **** him, he'll call you out on it. Sometimes he is too dismissive of peoples answer in class, he justs says that
I only took his class because my dad died when I was 3 and I'm desperate for male role models. You have to keep up with the readings and participate in class to do well. All teachers say that, but it's essential in this case. Slightly more challenging than most intro classes, which I like. This school can get awfully community college at times.

I took Alex's classes from 2002-2004. I am currently working on a History BA. I'm now at SFU Burnaby, but I have to say that he's the best prof I've ever had. His courses wmade me want to study history more. Ignore all the people on here that complain about him being tough; do the readings, do your work, and TALK and you'll be fine.
Alex is a jerk. He needs to retire. He gave me a c plus for participation when I never missed a class and contributed every class. His goals are whatever he wants, there is no real outline. Very static and stubborn teacher. He will make you feel like a potato, even if your gpa is 3.4. Take a class with him if you like vegetables, he loves garlic.
Great class
Challenging but fair. Only negative is that they allow dimwits into the class who can't understand the difference between participation and attendence.
Look, guys. It's either sink or swim, whether you're in college or the real world. Don't take his class unless you're actually prepared to do actual work, and don't **** if you get a mediocre grade after doing nothing. The people ****ing that he's a hard marker and an **** are just bottom feeders that you pass on their journey to the middle.

He attempts to intimidate people, but it's an act. He knows his stuff, but doesn't convey it clearly in lectures. His feedback is limited-he expects you to discuss the 'big issues' but only skims over them in class. I'm an A student in Hist, but am around a B in his class. Inconsistent marker. Be loud/participate. Pretty heavy reading level.
Pretty disappointing. He was quite rude and really picked on people. I especially didn't like it when he interupted people's presentations. He expects people to participate in class discussions, but shuts them down when they do. Seems very high on himself. I got an A in his class, but I wouldn't take him again- and I'm a history student.
Interesting and educational. EXTRAORDINARILY hard marker. You need to not only know your stuff, but have excellent writing skills as well. Good teacher tho
funny guys. loves his vegetables. easily strays off topic when vegetables or gardens are mentioned. pretty fast notes but tests are bearable. if your not a dunce he wont pick on you. good class discussions. awsome material for 2102 class, really learned alot about europe which helped me in me in a few other courses. good overall, kind of hard
Do the readings! He expects you to participate and if you don't, then you're not going to learn anything. His notes are verbal so you must have a fast hand. Pay attention...I didn't and well, it bit me in the ass! He's a tough one.
Brilliant. An asset to the department. Course was a little difficult due to the time span and the language, but made it as accessible as possible and admitted to learning from the students what not to do in future offerings of this course. Highly recommended, but make sure you do your weekly readings. There is no coasting through a Popovich course!
Favorite prof at school. Complete jerk to those stupid enough to be lazy asses and it`s hilarious. If you are thoughtful and bring something interesting to the table he gets really excited about it. Loves football and talking about Serbs.
He's a funny guy. He can be a bit of a jerk to the kids who didn't do their work. It's really important that you do the readings he assigns. Overall, he keeps the lectures exciting and is really entertaining. He is a pretty fair marker.
He's a great prof; funny, friendly, and he really knows his stuff. His class changed my views on several parts of the subject matter, which is a good thing. Very rarely is a class boring. He's not the easiest, and you do have to read the texts, but as long as you do that and show up you'll do fine.
He's a great teacher, just not an easy one. Getting an 'A' is possible, but you have to do the required readings, and I mean it. You have to READ, READ, READ! His tests consists of M/C, Short Answers, and 2 essays. Keys to success: (1)READ!! (2)Write Detailed Notes (3)PARTICIPATE!! (4)READ also, if you bring a tape recorder it would HELP A LOT.
Great Prof, probably the best I've had so far. Lectures are incredibly entertaining like watching the history channel, but he is rather difficult. Entering his class with out some prior knowledge about history could make it quite difficult to do well or participate. Overall i think he marks fair, most kwantlen courses are sooo easy!!!!
I liked his class. Despite failing; it was my fault for not putting enough effort. There are a lot of readings, A LOT! So if you took 5 courses like me, I would advice you to avoid this class. Anyways, he is a great teacher, just read the readings, and analyze them carefully. You don't need to remember dates. PS. Please Participate! I mean it!!!!!!
This guy is a great prof, bases 80% of the grade on a mid-term, final essay and final exam. Is very entertaining during the lectures.
HORRIBLE PROF!.. 2 hour lecture and nothing sticks to you. very BORING lectures., BRUTAL marker. u have to talk in his class. doesnt give u indication of exam topics. leaves you lost in the class. NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR A FIRST YEAR HISTORY PROF. he doesnt treat it as a first year class, more 4th year. dont take him!!
He's a challege for sure. But he encourages people to think & go out of the box, expecially for senior students. He can be a jerk & intimidating at times, but he's a good prof!! It's post-secondary people!! You have to work for your mark! Participation is a must!!! And ask about his garden, good place to break the ice!!!
Can be a jerk sometimes, but he's a good prof. Very clear on the matter at hand, and willing to help if you ask. If he seems intimidating, as he is sometimes, ask about his garden!!!
Alex is your standard university professor; on some days he will impress you, on other days, he will disappoint. Bottom line though: his tests are straight forward (right from the texts), and his marking is fair.
Awesome Prof! Very interesting and captivating lectures. Always challenges preconceived opinions on history. Brutal marker but if u actually do the readings and go to class u should have no problem with exams, they are fair. Can be a pretentious but if u don't take it personally u'll be fine. Rough for 1st year but ur in University, get over it!
Easily my favorite professor. He's challenging, mostly because he makes you question your own ideas and really makes you think about what you believe and why. Reading is essential (as with any history course) and participation is effectively mandatory. Only saw him tear apart a Nazi sympathizer in class, any other challenges were ideas not people
Alex is a great prof. His exams are very straight forward and from the text/notes. Make sure you do the readings before class!!!!!!!
Alex is such a great teacher. With being a new student in my first semester, I was glad I had him as a teacher. He's nice, sarcastic yet cool and if you do the readings, you'll do absolutely fine in his courses. He's the most laid back teacher you will have but doing your work is key. Definitely recommend taking any history class with him!
Had him for both 1120 and 1121. Wanted to take him for Soviet history, but it didn't fit my timetable. Don't listen to these people about how hard he is. Put the time in (GO TO CLASS) and use the questions that are in the textbook to study for exams.
pretentious and thinks he is better than everyone else
fantastic. this guy is exactly what you want in a history professor. he starts the first class with questions like "how do you know im right?" and "what is history?" he really knows the stuff and really knows how to keep discussion going. this kind of class is what makes history cool, no memorization, no boring stuff, all discussion, its GREAT!!!
Great prof. He challenges all the common misperceptions and expects you to come to an informed understanding of the course material. Don't spew the garbage you learned in highschool. Very friendly. Relatively tough marker, expects a lot. Participation mandatory. Doing the readings is mandatory. 1 Presentation, 1 short essay, 2 exams
The worst professor I have ever had. Challenges any statement a student makes to the point of discrediting their statement. Very arrogant. If you want a professor to crush your spirits and motivation take a class with Popovich. Also, zero preparation for the final exam. Lots of wasted classtime. Reads his lectures so fast you can't take notes.
One of my favourite profs and classes! He knows his facts and doesn't teach straight from the text. Read the text and participate and he'll love you! His classes are fun and he opens it up to class discussion!
I always *loved* history in high school, but after being in this professor's class, I don't know if I'll be capable of taking hisotry again. I have never had any teacher who made me feel so inadequate.
Alex is a great history prof, He really knows his stuff and doesn't put up with crap. He makes an effort to weed out the slackers, if you don't care then you can guarantee he doesn't care about you. He loves and is more than willing to help those who are interesed, show up and make an effort. He's very realistic in what he expects from students.
A true university professor, engaging and interesting. You will have to read and think, but will develop strong skills as a university student. If you are lazy or want this course for an easy credit, you have made a big mistake!!!
I had 3 courses with Alex and I must say he was the most influential teacher I've ever had! He is a difficult marker (but fair), his lectures are very interesting and he always has good stories to tell, I can't say enough good things about this guy! Defiantly take at least one course with him!
this Dinosaur needs to retire. He still reads his lectures from his 1988 notes. He only gives extensions on essays so he doesnt have to write comments. very hard to get a vibe of what he wants.
Just one of the best teachers at Kwantlen.Has low tolerance for slackers, but will help those who make the effort to improve. Very knowledgeable and interesting lecturer.
Has unrealistic expectations for a third year course. I am an Asian studies student and was surprised by how much we had to read and discuss. Most other professors don't really expect you to do all the readings and you get a good grade for participation if you attend class. He failed me for participation, because I didn't contribute to discussion.
Engaging lecturer, encourages participation and critical thinking. You will do a lot of reading and preparing for this course!
I found the outline for the class confusing and without clear instructions. He marks really hard for a first year course and when I asked him where I lost the marks he said, "It's history, you'll never get a 90% in history." The average grade was 60%.
I took two courses with Alex, and I can say that he was one of my favourite professors at Kwantlen. He is a tough marker, and doing the assigned readings is absolutely mandatory, but if you put in the effort, he will give it right back to you. At times he could be overbearing, but take good notes, read, and participate, and you will do well.
A bit of a hard guy to deal with but all in all he's a good prof. Prepare to read LOTS. I've taken many history courses but his involves lots of reading even by HST course standards. Passionate about his work.
One of the worst and meanest profs I've ever had. I took him for two classes and he practically failed me even though I'm a straight A student. His grading and criteria is unfair and he puts students down.
Mr Popovich is one of the most interesting professors at Kwantlen. He gives great lectures and expects students to be engaged and to work hard. If you follow his instructions and do the work you will get a good grade, but if you are a slacker or feel entitled to a A he will not be good for you. So sad too bad!!!
If you were hoping to write a paper you actually like, then don't take Popovich. He will destroy your confidence and grades so hard you would think you handed him a page with doodles.
If you want to write papers that YOU really like why go to university? There is ample room for to express your fuzzy ideas and thinking that require no logic, facts or coherence throughout the internet. For Popovich you need to meet university standards of work that demonstrate basic logic and thinking skills. Otherwise his course is not for you.
I really don't get why everybody has a problem with Alex. He was awesome. His lectures are interesting and easy to follow, his tests are pretty easy, only one paper for the class. He's a decently hard marker, yes you have to work for it but that's university. My only issue was that this class required 3 very expensive textbooks that you MUST read!
Great teacher who is passionate and is viewed as tough on students. Is really just there to challenge and push you to strive. My favourite prof.
Hilarious and down to earth guy. Is big on reading so get ready to read a lot.
Easily one of the best profs at Kwantlen. Students who don't like him generally are not willing to put in the work to read and / or don't know how to argue and write logically. He expects your participation, and he expects your papers and contributions to be logically sound. His classes are engaging and hilarious if everyone does their work.
Alex is rude/disrespectful in subtle ways. Puts huge pressure on participating (5-7 comments/class to get A in participation) which makes quiet people even more nervous to say something. Doesn't explain assignments well, if at all. The class is designed only for students who are comfortable with speaking constantly, not for quiet thoughtful ones.
Mr. Popovich is one of the best teachers at Kwantlen. He is very helpful and clear on what he expects. He will help you if you try,but if you are lazy or feel entitled to a good grade because someone else gave you one, you will not like his course.
Make sure you talk, write good notes and stay on top of the schedule. He never mentions it but there is textbook reading every week that is on the course outline. He doesn't give a lot of info on what he expects for his papers. Every class I've had with him has 10% presentation, 10% participation, 30% paper and 2 exams each worth 25%
Great teacher for those who wish to learn history seriously. Those who don't like him do so for reasons that they are fully aware of. Just do the readings and pay attention.
Lectures are boring, no slides or pictures for reference. His syllabus is vague and often has people confused. Changes assignment requirements and due dates on the fly.
One of the best and most interesting profs at Kwantlen. Not for the intellectually lazy or weak.
Amazing professor. Does everything he can to ensure everyone in the class learns. From letting us know potential exam questions WELL in advance, to re-writing large papers. Be ready to read A LOT, and give it your all. Mandatory presentations, but they are interesting. Lectures are funny and very informative. Would take over, and over and over.
Alex is extremely rude and is a horrible teacher. He definitely knows his stuff but is very bad at teaching. There are no PowerPoints, so you have to rely entirely on your notes. He also calls out students in class often which is mean and makes them feel bad. Marks are based on midterm. presentation, a book review + final. Horribly tough marker.
Alex is inspirational to listen to and very funny but he has a weird power dynamic in terms of marking. He will bring down your GPA and provides no feedback.
This was my first time ever taking a class with Alex. I would say he is a tough marker and expects a lot of participation from students. Lots of reading and for assignments, he provides great feedback for students to do better.
Alex is honestly an amazing prof. You can see the passion he has for history in each of his lectures, he is incredibly knowledgeable. He is a fairly tough grader, but as long as you do the readings, make notes, and listen in class you'll be fine. All of this being said, he isn't very nice to those who don't put in the work. So make sure you do.
This guy is an amazing professor in the history department he is one of the best. My top 3 up there. He is super easy-going and cracks jokes time to time. His midterm and quizzes are faily easy if you do your homework, weekly readings of 20 pages or so and to top it off he allows you to bring a page of notes for any test or quiz he does.
Unfair marker. He says he only gives out 8/10 maximum Assignments are unclear and he is disorganized. Do NOT take!
Lots of course reading but if you are engaged in the material it really doesnt feel like a lot. Alex truly makes class enjoyable and make the already interesting material more interesting!
Alex is one of my favourite professors. He makes you work, but it's worth it and you have to make an effort. I received a 9/10 on the document analysis, so don't believe what you read below! If you are too lazy to follow basic instructions you will fail.
Alex is a passionate History professor but does not know how to teach an online course. He is very hands off, gives you material to read and respond too, and is very vague with his expectations. No lectures done by him are posted. Just readings from the textbook. I paid money to be taught, not to teach myself the entirety of the course material.
I have had Alex in other courses and he is very good. I think for the online course he is doing his best. I miss his great lectures. It's not the greatest but for history you still have to read and write. Anyone who does not like this should not take an online course, it's your choice.
He gave up to 50 pages of history books to read every week and expects a student to read, understand AND create a professional summary out of it. Do not give online lecture, just post assignment every week.
Alex is definitely one my fav profs I have had at KPU. Clear class format without a final, same for his online and in person class as I've taken both with him. For online he took a very laid back approach rather than an in your face approach that I actually prefer. Retiring soon so if you can I recommend taking a class with him.
