Awesome teacher. Extremely helpful he helps you revise the essays word by word. Gives a lot of extra credit. He is kinda serious, but he is cool. His only rule is to turn in the essays on the due date, in class or email.
Seems unsure of his authority. Tries really hard to be the 'cool' professor, then he snaps at the whole class. Acts like a high school teacher. Preachy.
Excellent teacher! Try to show some effort, when you don't, you can tell it bothers him, even though he says it doesn't :)
Really good teacher. prior to tavares I failed freshman english twice. Thanks to him i passed. do all of his work and you will pass.
he si a good teacher I like him a lot but, you need to pay atention to everything and do alot of homework...so be ready
He is not the worst out there but I would have taken someone else. He is fairly new at teaching and because he is an English major he thinks everyone else is. Gives too many assignments as if that were the only class you're taking. I got a C on the research paper and he said mine was one of the better ones. A lot of people were expecting As and Bs
Great guy! I'd hang out with him, but never have him as a teacher. Like another rating, he is an English major so he seems to believe that every who takes his class is looking toward an Literature Major also. He has a fair amount of homework but grades harshly. Unless your schedule prohibits you to look elsewhere, I recommend another instructor.

Very gifted teacher and a highly intelligent person with a passion for his subject. Material presentation: clear, precise, high level of intelligence, good taste in literature; Grading: has his own sofisticated grading system for essays, which works well, lots of opportunities for extra credits; Attitude: personable, down-to-earth, extremely helpful
Terrific teacher, good person. Highly recommended for those who have interest in English and writing.
Great instructor. Very fair and gives many opportunities for extra credit. If you want to learn he will be the best teacher for you. Take him up on using the writing center. It was EXTREMELY Helpful. I passed with an "A" I will take him for 1102!
He is a wonderful instructor and a very intelligent person. He was extremely helpful in the classroom or in the Writing Center where he also worked. He gives students many opportunities for extra credit.I highly recommend him.
BEST teacher! highly recomended. young and fun makes coming to class fun! essays are mandatory but he always had peer reviews to help you on them!
He gives quite a bit of homework, but you can turn it in anytime before a specific date. The essays must be in on time, and there is one in-class essay. Not a bad class if you're willing to pay attention and study a little.
Definitely a good teacher. He's willing to help you one on one when you need it especially with essays. He'll go through it with you before the due date to help you get the best grade on it. Which is good since he grades those the hardest. Lots of homework! If you want to look at something good while you're learning than this is the class to take.
Good teacher. Nice guy too.
Passionate teacher who understand his role of educating and takes it seriously! Loved every hour of his class, his patience and guidance. If you want to just pass a class to meet the credit requirements, he may not be the best, but if you want to learn something, I highly recommend him.
Interesting class discussions
A wonderful instructor, passoniate and helpful. I enjoy this class a lot.
Absolutly reccomend Mr. Tavares. Intelligent, caring and seems to be an all around nice guy. He is an amazing professor, very helpful and it is obvious he wants everyone to do well. He will sit down with you and go over your assigments if you need extra help and offers a lot of extra credit. I plan on taking him for 1102 in the fall.

Good teacher, very helpfull, and wants you to learn and have a good grade.
Gave enough homework to satisfy 5 classes, grades essays harshly.I do not recommend . passed with a C and i still dont know how with the horrible grades i recieved on my essays
He is a wonderful teacher; however, I believe he brings his personal life into the classroom, he was awesome at first, towards the end of the semester he became uninterested. I believe he has a talent for this field, but is still a bit to young. He get better with time.
I had ENC 1101 & 1102 with him. He is awesome! His tests are all written format no scantrons. About 5 essays & he is there to HELP you not hurt you.We watched a few movies used to write a paper or answer questions. Group activities & essay revisions up to 8 extra points. Gives a whole list of extra credit opportunities. Him being cute is a plus!
he is very nice and helpful:)
It's a difficult class since he answers the questions you may have in a vague way; enough to shut up but not enough for the material to be clear enough for the little light bulb lights up. If that makes since, you could also describe him as a very technical teacher. He's nice enough but if your a girl don't look at him too much he may think your in
great
run for the hills when it comes to this guy if your an english major then this is the guy for you but if writing is not your strong point then don't take him you will regret it his stories are difficult to understand and he let you know it if you suck at writing !!!!
This dude is crazy hard....lots of homework and stupid essays to do. He's too emotional about books and he will pretty much cry when no one reads the material.
Sooo much homework! You need to do book work every day in order to stay on top of things. At times, the material can seem repetitive. Overall, he's a good teacher.
HE really is a good professor. Hard? yes he is but thats probably why i did fairly decent in the class. There is alot of Hw but its never do by the next class its wasnt due till the end of the semester. All in all it was good class
THIS GUY ONLY GIVES BUSY WORK!!!!! SO MUCH FOR HAVING A JOB AND CHILD.HE NEVER GIVES HELP OR EXTRA CREDIT AND NONE OF HIS TESTS INCLUDING THE FINAL ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE.GRADES ESSAYS VERY HARSH.
I just took this professot and I did fine. I hardly studied for his tests (they're easy) and worte the essays the day they were due. Some people are just morons and don't know how to use simple punctuation.
Grades WAYY to harsh. In my class alone I know of 4 people that got 60s or below on an essay. I got my paper back and it looked like the red pen exploded on my paper! Way to picky about every little thing. Would not recommend him to ANYONE.
He grades tough, but you come to class and listen the test shouldn't be that hard. You do what you need to do and you'll get through it, those who think that they will pass on by doing nothing will fail.
Very helpful teacher. Deadlines for essays are strict. He is very strict on grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Did not require use of the textbook as most of the material was online. I recommend him to anyone considering this class.
Overall, great professor. He grades papers a little harsh, but gives you plenty of opportunites to improve your grade. He is very helpful, and will work with you if your having trouble. The bottonline is if you want to learn something take his class. If don't put effort into this class you will fail. great professor. I highly recommend him
Good teacher. Very high expectations. Clear requirements. You must attend classes. You must read the material. You MUST do the h.w. He is available for 1:1 but seems to prefer it for consultation on certain things. He grades harshly but offers opportunities for improvement of essays and h.w. A FUN but *difficult* class!
He is extremely helpful and informative. This is not an easy class, but you will certainly learn what you are required to learn by the time you are finished with his class. He is fair but strict with grading. If he feels that you don't know what you need to know then he will not pass you.
Mr.Tavares is a great professor. If you take his class, you will definitely learn and improve your writing. If you do your part as a student , you won't have any problems. He is always willing to help students, and class discussions are interesting.
If you really want to learn this is the best class for you. There is plenty of opportunity for extra credit, but if you do your work you may not need it. He is very fair, available for assistance, and through his class policies listed within his syllabus, he prepares you for the real world. YOU MUST DO YOUR HOME WORK BEFORE THE DEADLINE.
His a good professor, but his classes are way harder.. there is a lot of homework. everyday u Must do something.. Is grading seems fairly, but sometimes he makes students feel like in some absolute power
Great teacher! If you like English and you want to become a better writer take him! If your taking the class because you have to; i'd pick somebody else!
He is very helpful, a great teacher, you just need to do the work, classes are fun and interactive. i totally recommend him as your English teacher but only if you are serious about passing the class.
I usually don't take the time to write reviews on professors but Mr. Tavares is by far an exception to the rule. This class will deffinatly be a class I never forget and I wish I could take him again. His tests are very reasonable and EVERYTHING on the test will be discussed in class before hand. He doesn't hand you grades, but in my opinion that's
TAVARES WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL. GRADING IS A LITTLE TOUGH, BUT HE IS FOCUSED ON HELPING HIS STUDENTS BECOME BETTER WRITERS. HE GOES OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP HIS STUDENTS. YOU CAN ALWAYS TUTOR DURING HIS OFFICE HOURS. I WILL BE TAKING HIS 1102!
Travares is fantastic. So helpful. I never had to do drafts prior to this class and the peer editing really did help. His office door was always open and he was happy to take the time to help you with anything you had trouble on. Tests could be difficult but he gives you all of the info in advance. I would definitely recommend him!
By far the best English teacher I have ever had. You'll have to work for your grade, but you'll come out a stronger writer 100%. Wish I could take him again! Highly Recommended
One of the best teachers you can ever take. I took him for enc 1101 and I got stuck. If you actually want to get your money's worth take him. He is extremely helpful and was only strict when it came to due dates for papers, but you get to develop your writing skills in the process. Go FANBOYS!!! Lol
Tavares expects his students to be able to read and write at the college level since this is an 1102 class. He is always available to help, and you will walk away with knowlege that will serve you well in upper-level classes. If you are lazy and looking for an easy A, this guy is not for you.
HE'S A GOOD TEACHER KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING. BUT ACTS LIKE HIS CLASS IS THE ONLY ONE. GRADES ESSAYS WAY TOO HARSH. IF YOU LOVE TO WRITE AND ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT ENGLISH THEN THIS IS YOUR TEACHER. BUT IF YOU WANT AN EASY GRADE/PASS THEN FORGET ABOUT TAKING HIM.
Great teacher! If you are wanting to actually learn English, he is the teacher for you! Although he is a great teacher, his class is pretty tough. If you are looking for an easy A, this definitely is not the class!! Make sure that you keep up with all of your homework assignments! All in all, a really good teacher.
Lazy people cannot pass this class. His teaching style is on point! Because he's young, he can relate to his students a lot. If you REALLY want to learn something, then take his class. You have to earn the grade, but he's a VERY good teacher. I'm taking him again next semester for 1102.
Tavares is a cool teacher and knows his stuff. His teaching style is great and you learn a lot from this class, without being bored to death. He does stick to his course guidelines and rules, so you got to do the work to pass.
Takes his role very seriously and provides his students with the needed tools to succeed;it is up to the student if he or she wants to learn. I had a great time in this class and learned a lot.
Mr. Tavares is the best teacher I have ever had. He is so helpful and will not let you leave the class without learning something new. As everyone else has said, if you are lazy then you should not take the class. He expects everyone to do the work up to par and he is very willing to help people along the way. Overall awesome teacher!
he doesnt understand that not everyone is going to grow up to be a poet. ive never written all of my essays for a class and have receieved and F. and did about 75% of my homework because he does assign ALOT. if you like writing and the marines, this is the class for you. HOO-RAH
Anyone who's genuinely interested in hearing the truth about the current, derelict state of English should take this class. If you're not already using capital letters, look elsewhere.
I really recommend taking him only if you are willing to do the work. He does not tolerate people who do not want to put in the effort. He grades papers hard, so you'll have to put in a good amount of time on them. He is really easy to talk to and explains things clearly. And and make sure you read the stories, or he'll give pop quizzes a lot!
I took him for ENC 1101 & am now in 1102. Prof. Tavares is an awesome teacher. He will help you step by step with all of your essays. He has a genuine passion for writing and teaching. You will need to know how to write papers for the rest of your academic career & he will absolutely teach you how to write. He wants his students to succeed. TAKE HIM
He is a great teacher, however he is overly critical when it comes to grading work. Homework is done on your own time but if not done frequently it will haunt you. Make sure you also read the stores he assigns before class.
Classes are easy if you keep up on the work and read the stories on time, but he can be a bit unforgiving when it comes time to grade. Still, he's a very cool professor with a deep passion for his subject, and it shows. Highly recommended.
If you type lYK diiS nd yu DuN lYK sk3Wl then please do not take him. It'll make his job a lot easier. The guy really is passionate about his job and can help anyone become a decent writer. If you want to genuinely learn, then take him. He helped me with my essays tremendously.
If you want to improve your writing skills then I recommend you take this course if you want an easy "A" then take someone else.
He is a good Professor, but if you take his 1102 he expects you to know your stuff. Suggest to take his 1101 before taking his 1102. He is very helpful when you needhelp. But if your looking for class to get an easy A, that will NOT happen in his class. You do have to work to get the grade you want. His class can be fun.
I took him for ENC1101 and I loved his class. I wouldn't say he is a tough teacher, he only asks you work for your grade. He will help you in any way possible, and you are given multiple chances to increase your grade. He is passionate about teaching and is well-spoken. I enjoyed his lectures so much, I am currently taking his ENC1102 course.
Professor Tavares is a well spoken and very intelligent teacher. I took him for ENC 1101 in the fall, and he helped me with the transition from high school to college level writing. He is tremendously passionate about his job and i really enjoy his lectures. If you want an esay A...... then go take someone else.
Mr. Tavares is a the best! He really teaches you how to write essays and helps you understand difficult stories. I am so glad I took him this semester and I wish I took him for 1101. The only thing is he destroys your essays when you first turn them in, but there are helpful tips on the paper and you can turn in a second draft for a higher grade!
He is a very nice person but grades hard. He gives a lot of work also. If you have a busy schedule you may not want to take this class. He gives chances for extra credit but not expect a lot grades that hard as well. Gives exams on stories so know it. Good Luck!
Prof Tavares, is by far the best English teacher I have had. I took him for Eng 1&2.60 percent of your grade will come from essays, but if you are willing to give up the time he will help you. I went to his office mulitiple times with an essay and he sat down with me and literally expained how to improve my essays. I learned so much in his class.
Do not take his class. he grades very hard if you are fresh out of high school do not take his class. he is a very cool person but no sympathy when it comes to grading.
People who want to learn how to write will be well-served in this class. Of course there is a lot of writing, it is a COMP class. As in COMPOSITION. Tavares prepares you for writing papers for the rest of your college career, so if that is your goal, take him. If you want to skate by, find someone else.
I would say he is a very intelligent man and that part i respect...but, i would never ever want to take him again. Too critical and way too harsh pretty much overboard like hes just giving grades out just because. He may be better suited to be a highschool teacher.
Tavares is a a great teacher, but grades harshly. I learned a lot in his class and if you do the work, take notes, and study you will be fine.Take advantage of the extra credit and chances to revise your essays.
Great Professor, passionate about his work. You will learn how to compose an essay the correct way, grades are not given they are earned, and if you are not serious your grades won't look too hot either. Would have taken him again if it weren't for scheduling conflicts. Take him if you want to really get better in writting.
Amazing teacher! He is so passionate and interesting. He is a young professor so he easily relates to his students. If you are looking for an easy A, you've signed up for the wrong class. However, his class is fun and as long as you work hard, apply yourself, and enjoy the class, you will love him and earn an A! Good Luck!
would not want to take him again
Professor Tavares is a great teacher. He's definitely not an easy A, but he wants his students to succeed and does everything he can to make sure that they do. I would definitely take one of his classes again. Excellent professor and super cool.
He's an awesome guy. It's an easy A to be honest. I hate school and got a B in his class without even trying. Just do the work and you'll get an A.
Great guy, but one of the HARDEST ENGLISH CLASSES I'VE EVER TAKEN! If you are not a strong writer I DONT THINK YOU SHOULD TAKE HIM! However, I did learn a lot...It depends on how hard you are willing to work. GOOD LUCK
Awesome teacher, funny guy, the hardest part was the essays, overall, i didnt think it was too hard of a class actually, you just have to put a bit of time into it
worse teacher ever!essay are if not done you fail course,my first essay he said was the worse thing he ever read and that i should be ashamed (i took to 2 other ENG professors they said its a B) 2nd essay he gave me a D. first day he said he does not care about you just that you do the work perfectly. NEVER TAKE HIM!
Professor Tavares is one of the best teachers that I have ever had. If you are looking for an easy A, then do not take his class. If you do not want to do your work or do not want to come to class, then do not take his class. He is extremely smart and he seems to have fun teaching the students. Definitely take his class!
One of the very best professors that I had during my entire AA. I took Prof. Tavares for 3 classes: Comp 1, Comp 2, and Creative Writing 2. He gave me an appreciation for literature. He is willing to help you, during his office hours, in person or via email. If you put forth the effort, he will give you all of the help that you ask of him.
He is one of the best teachers I've ever had so far. He is very smart and committed to excellence. You will learn a lot with him. I took also ENC 1102 with him. He's great! Nevertheless, if you are lazy, don't take his class. He'll make you suffer. I just loved his classes.
I love English and just writing in general but this teacher is horrible, harsh, and grades unrealistically. I dropped this class because of the way he grades and his crazy expectations. I would NOT wish him on any student. Don't take him if you want to enjoy the English language!
Professor Tavares was amazing!! He lays down the law on the first day of class and is very big into lectures. I did this class as a hybrid, so we took tests online and went to class 1 day/wk. He will sit with you and review essays before you turn them in and you can get better grades. He made learning about boring Lit fun!!
Professor Tarvares is incredibly passionate about what he teaches and he is very straightforward about what is expected. He is engaging and really gets you thinking. If you are looking for an easy or lazy A, find another professor. You WILL earn the grade, A or otherwise. Laziness will earn you the latter. I look forward to taking his ENC 1102.
Professor Tavares is the head of the English department and acts like it. His teaching style is fantastic. If you do not have a strong background in English composition previously, you might want to consider another professor. I did not agree at all with his grading style. He is very harsh and not very positive. His way or no way. KNOW MLA or FAIL.
He's pretty straight-forward about his expectations. Expect a group work to count, theres a few peer-reviews. He is kind of pretentious, but what english professor isn't? Just try and show up and make sure you turn everything in to his specifications, and you'll be okay.
Prof. Tavares is one of the best instructors that I had at HCC. He is extremely smart, and his classes are amazing. I learned a lot from him, and I enjoyed both ENC 1101 and ENC 1102. If you really want to learn, take him; if you are lazy, he's not the professor you need.
I have English as a second language and his 1101 was the first English class I took at College level. I was scared at the beginning but I had such an amazing experience that I took his 1102 class. I have learned a lot and my writing must be improving when it takes me less time to write now than when I started. Be committed and you will do fine.
His 1102 was my first English class since high school. Tavares is everything I want to emulate as an aspiring teacher. He's funny, interesting, knows his stuff, and is not afraid to expose you to new topics. He has given me extracurricular reading to continue to inspire myself. It was a tough course, but quite a learning experience.
Very good professor. If you're looking for a free ride, look elsewhere. However, if you're looking to become a better writer and learn a lot about writing, this is the teacher for you. His lectures are not boring, and he actually sparked my interest in writing. He's actually quite funny too. I definitely recommend for people looking to learn.
Mr. Tavares is a great teacher, period. His classes are pretty easy to follow, and the lessons are beyond informative. No easy A here, but with a little elbow grease I think I might be able to pass... the second time around... Regardless of what you may hear, he is a tough grader and a bit a of perfectionist, yet I don't think you'll find better
I ACTUALLY LEARNED FROM A CLASS. PROFESSOR TAVARES IS A DIFFICULT GRADER. BE PREPARED TO ACTUALLY READ FROM THE BOOK CAUSE HIS QUIZES ARE SWEET AND VERY SHORT. HE NOTICES YOUR WEAKNESS AND IT IS UP TO YOU WITH IMPROVEMENT. BE READY TO APPLY WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED BECAUSE WRITING IS KID OF IMPORTANT. MOST IMPORTANTLY, VERY STRICT ON REFERENCES.
Professor is very knowledgeable, expectations are clear, multiple EC assignments offered. Make sure to do the reading. Lectures are interesting and make it easy to learn. Recommend doing the reading and then skimming texts during tests. Pretty much impossible to fail.
Grades harshly and gives way too much homework for a pre-requisite class
I took both his ENC 1102 & LIT 2000 classes this past fall. Amazing teacher and very inspirational lectures. Vast majority of his classes were return students.
Worst English teacher I have taken, if there are any other options I highly suggest you choose someone else instead of him. Tough grader, assigns unnecessary work, and his class will make you fall asleep.
If you don't put in some REAL effort when it comes to the essays prepare to fail. The essays will 100% determine if you pass or fail. Again, DONT SLACK WHEN IT COMES TO WRITTING YOUR ESSAYS. Wouldn't suggest taking him if your writing skills aren't a-1. I'm pretty much failing just because of my essays
he is an awesome professor, even if it is hard to pass the class with an "A"
I took professor Tavares for ENC1101 & ENC1102. I love his teaching style and his level of organization. He allows you to correct your papers (except your last one) for a better grade. If you want to learn to be a better writer, take his courses. Looking for an easy A? Look elsewhere.
I've taken Mr. Tavares for three different classes now and I really enjoy his teachings, and his lectures. He gives you all the tools needed for the course as well as makes it as easy as possible for you. He is also available if needed, which is pretty awesome. If you are looking to push yourself, then he is the professor for writing!
A teacher who actually cares about you as an individual, but will also make you work for your grade. The classes are interesting, and you learn if you are willing to. Will admit he is a tough grader, so you cannot type your papers the night before. Bad thing was we spent too much time on grammar and things people should have learned in high school.
I was initially nervous to take this course, but by the 2nd or 3rd class I felt comfortable w/ my work and learning all I could to improve. Prof. Tavares does a great job at keeping students engaged and providing personal input into the world of reading, writing, and publishing. I would definitely take all the classes I can from him! A+ critic
Out of all my online classes, this was the least interactive. The tests were easy and the midterm presentation was easy. I just wish the teacher was more interactive with us because I was constantly forgetting to do this class due to the lack of assignments. Oh well! Still loved learning about different authors. Very independent class.
I really liked having him as a teacher. I took his Lit class online and it really was tests, a term paper, presentation, and journal prompts. The one thing I can say is to keep up with the weekly journal prompts since they arent due until the end of class I always put them off. Other than that it was a great class.
Honest opinion of Tavares dude was the worst. Grades horribly and thinks everything you write has to be a professionally done essay. Gives bad feedback to essays and is very rude. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TO NOT TAKE HIM.
Alex is the type of professor gives super strict grades on essays, but is a cool guy, as long as you pay attention in class you can pass his class to medium to little hardship
I took him online for LIT. There are about 10 easy tests on fun short stories, a journal portfolio you must create (500 words each, about 8 or so), a presentation, and a final paper. Graded really hard on presentation, and still awaiting the paper grade. Easy class, but strict grader. Super light workload. Id recommend if you write good!
Undoubtedly the best professor I've ever had. If you care about your grade and show it, he will definitely help you if you're struggling. Amazing English instructor and would easily take him again.
Don't get me wrong, he is a smart man and knows what he is talking about but is soo strict on grading papers. Make sure you are a professional writer before taking his class I barely passed with a 70!
Mr. Tavares is very rude and he's a strict grader when it comes to essays. He almost never answers your messages and if he does he is very late. I had to get a topic approved and I had to do my essay last minute due to family issues going on, I message him the topic I was going to doin the morning. He had the afternoon and the night to let me know.
Professor Tavares online literature class is not difficult to pass, but if youre looking for a professor that is accessible and gives definitive feedback and instruction for assignments or papers I would not recommend him. He is a tough grader, extremely critical, and never clear with what exactly he wants from your work until after its turned in
I took his LIT class online over the summer. The class was hard because he's a super strict grader and he's not clear about what he expects from assignments so you're constantly guessing what you have to do. I DON'T recommend his class to anyone who's not a strong writer. I thought I was a good writer until this class. At least his tests are easy.
AWFUL!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!! I worked two weeks on two essays with TWO English teacher and got 70 in one and 63 in the other one. Just awful
i took intro to lit with him. he is not clear on what he wants from you on any assignment, then he docks you for it. his syllabus requirments are different than the actual assign requirements, so i never knew which to follow. isnt very interactive at all. didnt really feel comfortable going to him for help. expects you to be a professional writer
Be prepared to read and write, but the stories are very interesting. While this professor is a strict grader when it comes to essays, his work load was not that bad. All of his expectations for assignments were lined out in modules, you just actually had to go in and read them. I enjoyed his class, and I learned a lot too
I had him for freshman orientation. He's really down to earth and cares about his students. He also has a good sense of humor. During the semester he continuously asked if we had questions on assignments. Which was nice because that was the entirety of our grade. Put effort into your work and you'll be golden. Enjoyed having him as a professor.
So unless he got harder recently, i dont recall his class being horribly hard, He is a pretty difficult grader on his papers, but his weekly assignments were not hard. If youre having trouble, hes available and will work with you. I left a review now instead of then because im almost done and he helped me be a far better writer because of his class
I took professor tavares class online.. it wasn't hard only had 3 essays (which he does allow you to revise) a journal portfolio and a few tests/quizzes (final exam is OPTIONAL) .. he's a tough grader and his feedback is a little harsh but I would recommend his class though.
This professor was easy to talk to.
Really liked this teacher. As someone who can't write to save my life, I felt like his feedback on my assignments were always so kind and boosted my writing confidence a bit. I only wish he would have been more involved in teaching us or maybe some sort of lecture. But class was super easy! Would def take again.
Alex L. Tavares Author, and Teacher. If you're a student who didn't do quite good in English 3 and 4 or maybe didn't even take English 3 and 4 i would highly recommend you not to take this professor! Alex isn't clear on things he thinks he is but his rules and wording with assignments and projects are hard to understand. He horrible don't take him!
Professor Tavares was suggested to me by a peer and I loved the course. There is a journal portfolio that's submitted at the end with 8 prompts, a few quizzes throughout the course, a PowerPoint assignment, and a final research paper from a chosen prompt. I loved exploring the dark literature he showcased. Fun Professor.
Online there isnt too many assignments. He has things due at the end of the course that you are supposed to work on the entire time. Not good for procrastinators but the instructions are clear. He is strict on grading projects and papers but you can email him in advance and he will provide feedback.
Pretty easy course
Hes a tough grader. My essays always ended up getting a C, even though I put in a lot of work. Quizzes werent hard just read the material. Hes good at communications and will get back to you quickly
She's honest and fair. Do your work and see good results.
Mr. Tavares is a caring Professor who understands that his students still need to maintain a proper work, family, life balance. His projects are not difficult and you are given plenty of time to complete them. I will be looking for him as a teacher in my future classes. Thank You Mr. Tavares for a great semester.
A very kind and forgiving professor that knows school is not the only thing in one's life. Extremely helpful and always willing to answer questions. You'll be writing a lot in this class, a term paper, a PowerPoint presentation, and a journal portfolio will take up most of your grade. Quizzes every other week or so, but they're easy. Recommended!
Honestly, probably my favourite class and instructor at HCC. That said, you will be reading a lot (Literature, hello?) and if it is a project or paper the grading criteria is explicitly listed but you will be graded on it to the letter.
This professor was very hard on his students. When I first submitted my essay he gave me roughly 70% and told me I would not pass if I didn't do better. All essays later ended very similarly, he also wasn't very helpful with questions I emailed him about regarding the course.
I dont want to sound rude, but he has graded all assignments late. The modules were no help for me at all, the notes and videos to help before the test were helpful to an extent. I did the extra credits and still barely passed this class. HEAVY ESSAY GRADER .If you are good in English, take his lass, but if you struggle DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Horrible. Never take his class. Grades without reason. Bad!
I wouldn't recommend choosing this professor if English is not your strong suit, he will nitpick every last thing in whatever it is you turn in. I wish I had seen these reviews before signing up for this class with him because I was a point away from a B and finished with a C. He is an extremely hard grader. I would NOT take a class with him again.
He was a tough grader, nit picks everything in your essays and homework. However, I learned a lot in his class and he grades the essays very seriously (makes up most of your grade). He also takes too long to grade your work. The course ended and we still do not know our final grades.
If you're interested in creative writing, specifically fiction, this is an awesome course. Complete your assignments and participate in class and the grades will take care of themselves. I looked forward to every class in the semester. Tavares is as good as they come in my opinion.
Extremely strict, nitpicky grading. Seemed based on personal pref more than rubric. Would dock points for seemingly inane reasons (e.g. the evidence-to-reasoning ratio on a page was less than 75/25). Do not take if you want an easy-ish class!!! There are projects he expects you to work on the entire term. Ridiculous expectations for comm. college.
Prof. Tavares is a thoughtful instructor. The workload is manageable, with a journal portfolio, quizzes, and a final paper. They provide helpful feedback to improve your writing. Try Unstuckstudy for efficient prep.
Overall good class, a tough but very helpful grader that actually helps you improve your writing and learn. Do not be like me and actually manage your time. Workload is pretty easy and not as hectic as most online English courses. He makes you write 3 major essays that are a huge part of your grade however he's overall easy to contact for help.
Great professor MCQ tests are easy Youll be reading alot but the stories are interesting voice presentation, journal prompts, and term paper are more harder but important
He is extremely helpful. He gives about two tests every week that have 20-35 questions each. There are three papers, and he is super tedious when grading these papers, period. He responds to emails within the next day. There is a journal portfolio assignment due by the end of the semester that requires 10 journal prompts that are 250 words each.
It was a pretty easy class with only 2-4 assignments per week that didn't really take too long. However, I lost a lot of points on a lot of writing and reflection assignments which dropped my grade a bit. If you take this class, make sure you elaborate a lot. It only took me around 30 minutes to an hour per week and the assignments are easy.
He was so sweet and understanding. I took his class online, but he was a great teacher. He always gave extremely helpful feedback on assignments, his tests were extremely easy, and I probably could've gotten a 99% if I didn't neglect to turn in 2 assignments. He let me resubmit an assignment I did wrong, and I highly recommend him.
Prof Tavares has been one of the best english professors I've had, he truly cares about his students passing. I truly recommend taking him, he will improve your writing skills. If i could I would take him again
