Alex was my teacher aid for Bio 191 Lab. He is a really cool guy, super laid back, and likes to fudge the rules a lot.
Hilarious teacher. He goes out of his way to make sure the class understand things. And when I say that "he goes out of his way" I mean that he will nearly put on a puppet show to explain certain topics. The exams aren't bad, and the paper he had us write was probably TOO easy.
I don't understand the previous ratings. He may be the worst teacher I've had. Works off of ppt's but often forgets to post them to BB until just before or after class, then goes too fast through lecture for accurate note taking. I decided to give up and teach myself using the book and got better grades. Avoid him if you value clarity and prep.
Great Professor, he is really funny and helpful.
Alex was a really nice guy, seemed to genuinely care about the students but lacked organization skills as a teacher. Used Power Point and many times the slides were not posted until right before the class. He did make sure to explain things that were not understood, but I would not take another class from him.
Alex is a rare breed indeed. He goes the extra mile on a regular basis.
Amazing, funny teacher. Very helpful.
This ecology lab required the most busy work out of any class i've taken thus far. As you will learn (in the research project) the survey methods taught in this class are very outdated so I wasn't sure why we were learning them. Alex himself was very rude and condescending to me. I was unimpressed with his lack of professionalism.
Alex is a great teacher. He takes the time to get to know you and will happily help you succeed. Also he is really funny especially if you love vague and sometimes outdated references! :) Great prof all around.
I have taken two classes from Alex now. He is a great teacher! He sets clear guidelines on the syllabus and sticks to them better than most teachers. He is a little late to office hours, but he makes up for that in extreme helpfulness and making you explain concepts back to him to check for understanding. Quirky sense of humor and a love for bio!
Funniest test's I've EVER taken. Hard tests too, but seriously funny test's. His lectures are engaging, from audience polling to student examples such as "hug-ase" where he explained portions by making two students hug. So funny. I would take another class with Alex again.
Really great lecturer!
Alex is a great teacher but he likes to talk too much. Go to class, pay attention and fill in the notes and you'll do fine.
Alex is a great professor to listen too. He's a very funny fellow who makes the lectures fun to listen to. The tests are all multiple choice and fairly easy if you've listened and taken notes. When the jargon from the textbook becomes very technical, he always makes sure to simplify it and only hammer home the key points that will be on the test.
Hot professor and funny! I'd date him if it was allowed!
Alex was great. I am a business major and took his bio100 class as a general education requirement. He made class enjoyable and often had cheesy science jokes that were entertaining. Plus, he has a great beard.
Alex is an awesome teacher! He is also a hilarious character. It's important to go to class because he takes test questions from his lectures and will tell you exactly what you need to know. Just go to class and pay attention and there's no reason you shouldn't get an A+. Only homework is the online bookwork, which is easy but time consuming.
I had Alex as a bio 191 lab instructor and he was very helpful. Often times I had a hard time understanding concepts from lecture (different professor) and he always made it much easier for the students to understand. As a lab instructor he is the best I have had at BSU!
Alex is very enthusiastic and passionate about biology and will tell you everything he knows on the subject to answer all of your off-the-wall questions about anything biology-related. He's a hoot and a half when giving examples and mnemonics to help everyone grasp the concepts and remember them. He tries his best to interest everyone in some way.
the tests are based off lectures, so they are easy to study for. Alex is knowledgeable and gives good lectures. I just wished he taught Bio 192.
Alex is literally the BEST teacher I have ever had at BSU. His lectures are actually fun, even on a topic like biology. You can tell when he lectures that he has a real passion for what he does and that makes the material more interesting. Not a tough grader, go to class for notes because he uses that info most for exams.
I was so excited to take this class but ended up very disappointed. Alex was combative, rude, and condescending to students. He was literally talk about how lazy and entitled we were to his T.A. in class. I have talked to other students who have said that he made them fell stupid when they would ask for help.
Alex was a great! He's very passonate about biology and finds funny ways of teaching the material to his students, especially when talking about genetics and evolution. He's a really great guy and has a great knack for lecturing. Highly reccommend.
Alex is a great professor. He is a laid back, funny guy who trys to make biology fun and ecxciting. If you have the chance, take biology with him.
He gives good lectures and is funny and easy to follow along with. Also, tests are pretty easy if you put in the effort you need to.
Funny and super clear with what he wants in the assignments. Lab lasts the whole 3 hours and usually goes over. 2 projects are due at the end, so beware for that. I'd take Alex again. He presents material very well
he is funny and helpful, I would take another class with him.
Alex is hilarious, but he's too smart for his own good. He doesn't really know how to "dumb it down" for entry-level students. However he is a pretty good teacher, you just have to pay attention. The class itself is difficult and you definitely have to study a lot, but if you work hard it isn't hard to get an A.
Alex was awesome! I actually changed my major to biology after taking his class because of how interesting he made everything. He made jokes and tried to keep us all awake since it was a night class. I plan on taking him next semester for bio191 and would highly recommend him over the other biology 100 level teachers.
Alex was a great lecturer, with an interesting sense of humor. The test primarily came from the lectures, while the textbook was used as a supplement. The LearnSmarts that he has for homework are a joke. They focus on very minute details and rarely, if ever, ask about the broad concepts that you need to know.
If you memorize his lecture slides and study for tests you can get an A easy. Understand the concepts but he will never put something on the exam that wasn't on his lecture slides. And he is super entertaining. Great teacher!! One of the best I've ever had.
Weekly quizzes get dull but do help study, this class was a piece of cake. Watch out for the harder sections of material though. He moves through them pretty slow and it is hard to keep it all fresh for the test.
Honestly he's a great and funny guy, but this class was way harder than it needed to be for a 100 level course. The slides don't have a lot of info and you're tested on a lot. The LA sessions help a lot but its a tough class
I think Alex is a great guy and absolutely loves teaching! The weekly quizzes are long and difficult most of the time. Some of the quiz material isn't in the notes. He curves tests and is a really nice guy! Tests are a bit too hard for a 100 level class, but the class overall isn't bad!
Very funny, easy to listen too. Write ups are time consuming, dont schedule classes b4 it if u procrastinate (or slip it into his office box afterward, shh). Theres a paper and an oral (not that), and hes super strict about them, dont miss a due date or else. Sit next to some1 u can work with on the first day, mine was french. very french. Good guy
Honestly as long as you get the notes somehow you'll do well in this class. He curves the tests and lets students use notes on the last 20 minutes of each exam (except the final). Just study your notes and show up to labs and you should get a good grade in the class.
Alex was great. Very through in his lectures. The tests are based on the lectures and not the book and he gives ypu an outline of the notes before class. He was intertaining and overall a great teacher. Would definitely recommend.
By far my favorite lab instructor... he really makes the class fun for everyone even if no one laughs at his jokes it makes you laugh on the inside, and definitely makes sitting in a 3 hour lab much more bearable! Best lab I've taken, and I'm not even finished with the course yet! I just couldn't wait to give him his review because he is that good.
People like Alex because his class is a joke. If you read over his powerpoint notes before the exam you will get an A. Tests are the only thing that matter, and he curves them. You don't have to study or learn anything. He says you should read the book, but don't. There won't be one question on the test from the book. It's all lecture.
I thought Alex was fine for this course. He did not curve our tests and I had to study hard for them. I don't like how the test/quiz questions are written and there isn't much chance for extra credit. He also gives no study guides for the tests. But I never went to the lectures and did all the book work and quizzes and did just fine.
Alex, is a great professor. He is super funny, PowerPoints are riddled with jokes/memes/etc. Its obvious Alex cares about his students and wants to engage them. Available outside of class.
Alex is an awesome professor. Attendance is not mandatory, but in order to get the lecture notes you have to show up (blanks on PowerPoints). These lecture notes are the most important thing for studying for his tests, so definitely show up. If you study hard and go to class, you will do well.
Im almost finished with my biology degree and Alex is by far the worst professor at Boise state. He waisted my time everyday in his lab which we were essentially forced to go to (you need the lab for ecology to graduate. For example, he would tell jokes the first 15-20 minutes every class. Waist of my time. Not funny
He's technology-challenged & likes the clicker. He hated our text so switched mid semester. Way off course of the syllabus. Told us it was the dumbed down bio100 for non-majors then proceeded to go into micro-bio details. LA said he went far deeper than partnered class. Knows his stuff, but didn't get through half of the topics we were supposed to.
Alex is a funny guy, which is definitely nice. However, he tends to ramble and go off topic. Additionally, he doesnt give a study guide and the tests are extensive so be ready to study.
Awesome professor, took the class in 2017 but had to come back and leave a review because I enjoyed the class so much. Lectures were engaging and I learned a ton. It was the perfect amount of difficulty imo. Tests are somewhat difficult but if you review the study guide beforehand you'll be fine. Is very passionate about Biology and knows his stuff
Pros: -Alex will keep you engaged and ready to go. If your lecture prof is lacking his lab will pick up the slack. -he really puts everything in perspective -FUNNY! Con: I wish I didn't buy the lab manual, it was useful at first and I expected it to be a part of the grade but it wasn't Partners grade your participation. Schmooze them or else.
Alex was pretty cool and I liked his personality. He is very sarcastic and the lab manual he wrote was pretty fun to read. His teaching was mainly lecturing with slides, but he tried to make it fun. The book for this class was very expensive and I didn't use it very much because there was the same book online with Connect.
The class is interesting and takes some effort but may be pretty hard to many. The tests run the class and if you study hard and pay attention in class youll do good on them. Just give it effort and itll pay off but be ready to actually try.
Alex is really a ton of fun to be around, and it really shows that he loves science and his students. He will bend over backwards to make sure you are having a great experience learning science
Professor Urquhart keeps his lectures interesting! He is super engaged with his students, responds quickly, is flexible, and genuinely cares about his students. BIO 191 is a reasonable amount of work and you will be provided with everything you need to succeed! Absolutely would recommend this professor.
Be aware if you take him that most of your grade will rely on tests. The tests for this semester were through ProctorU so if you do not handle tests like that, then I would not recommend. The tests are worth 100 points while the chapter assignments are 1 point and the weekly homework quizzes are 10 points. His tests are based on his lectures.
Professor Urquhart is great! The outline of his class was super simple, just take notes in class and review his lecture slides and you'll do fine on his tests since they're only based off his lectures. He does record his lectures as well in case you miss class. Plus his lectures are fun and interesting, he always has funny jokes or stories.
While I did struggle a bit with this class personally, Alex is awesome. His lectures are funny and you can feel how excited he is about science. Between the lab, weekly quizzes, and book assignments, there's a lot to stay on top of, but I still found myself excited to listen to him lecture every week. He will crack you up.
Alex is a really great professor. He makes everything super clear and concise. His lectures are decently easy and my only complaint was the inconsistent speed of the class. Some days were super slow and other days were too fast. Aside from that, Alex is a great guy who knows what he's talking about.
Alex was the only professor I've ever truly liked. I genuinely looked forward to his lectures and he's always there to talk to or answer questions. He's just a stand up guy all around and you can tell he really loves what he does! And his class isn't hard at all if you just pay attention which he makes easy to do. Great guy great class.
Alex really cares about his students. He often will adjust the duedates (tests, quizzes) and curves the test if most students' scores seem to be below 85%. His tests are based on the lectures and quizzes. Biol191 is mostly review if you've taken other biology-related classes before. HesOne of those professors that you don't have tobescaredtoaskques
Professor Urquhart is my absolute favorite professor I've ever had. He cares so much about his students, not just academically but their wellbeing as well. You can tell he loves what he teaches and he keeps lectures very fun. Overall, just an absolutely wonderful man. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone.
I only had Alex online but he was great! He's very understanding and flexible with due dates. All tests are graded on a curve. There's a lot of reading if you actually do it but that's not necessary. The chapter review is the only thing worth reading. This was a really easy biology class and you could redo the online lectures multiple times.
I absolutely hate biology and was terrified to take it online but was presently surprised. This class was very clearly laid out. It was something due every week. If you are taking this class purely for credit take this one. All tests are curved and I did pretty well for not studying once. Urquhart is a nice guy and understanding of technical issues
Was a tough course for me, and was fairly time consuming. Alex was very helpful and considerate of the challenges student's faced due to COVID. Since to course was online, I had a chapter or 2 to read/take notes on, a video lecture or 2, a study module, a homework assignment, and a lab per week. Make sure you don't try to do it all in one day!
Alex was a great professor. Attendance was not mandatory but you will want to go because if you don't you will miss a lot of content. I would take him again for sure. He's funny, really caring, and not too tough.
Definitely the worst professor I've ever had. He didn't teach a single thing, just gives online simulations and study modules that don't teach anything. You can easily complete all the modules in a day, but be wary because nothing in them is on the exams. Nothing on them is on any of the study material. Puts in zero effort and students pay for it.
Alex was awesome! He made class so fun. Covid made it hard, but he did everything he could to help his students. One of my favorite professors ever for sure. Make sure you go to class and notes, and you should do well.
My favorite professor so far! He is encouraging, homework load is not heavy, cares about students, grades fairly, and keeps lectures entertaining. It makes such a difference when you have an instructor who genuinely likes instructing and their topic.
A great guy! I might dare say that he is to nice sometimes, our class can get very off topic which I find to be a bit annoying sometimes because my lecture class was always behind my lab. The class itself is HARD, its a lot of memorizing make sure you study for exams! However Alex is very passionate about teaching and he is a great option!
One of my favorite professors. Is very engaging and makes lectures interesting and fun for everyone. Would recommend him to anyone.
A very funny teacher just get ready to memorize his tests are very heavy. Let my test use a cheat sheet which helped, but the tests are still hard.
Alex is great! Really passionate about biology and makes class very funny with jokes and his old-fashioned memes. Very few assignments, your grade is based on chapter quizzes you can do anytime in the semester, 4 big exams (including the final), and weekly lecture quizzes. He is a little slower-paced than the other profs but explains very well.
Alex is a hilarious dude who makes a biology lecture a lot more engaging and entertaining. At times, he gets a bit off topic, but overall fun lecture. Tests are pretty intense, memorization heavy and a bit difficult. The class itself can be difficult with minimal effort, but Alex does a great job at keeping us engaged with humor and memes.
He is a very kind professor who is really passionate about what he does. I would definitely suggest taking him for BIO100. His tests can be hard but he allows you a page front and back of notes which was very helpful. Thank you!
Alex Urquhart is a wonderful professor who makes lectures enticing and interesting and provides many tools and aids to help students understand difficult information. You can tell he genuinely cares about your success in your class and is great about responding to emails and helping you reach your full potential in biology. Highly recommend!!
Lecture was slow and frequently got off topic with unrelated questions from the students (I started skipping class and watched the online lecture at 2x). Weekly quizzes were supposed to be posted Thursday but sometimes were not up until Sunday night. 3 lecture exams and final taken in testing center. Easy class just not always super organized
The class is easy but prof teaches like a highschool teacher. Off topic, rarely do we get through all the material for the day. Talks down to students, set up a new attendance policy 1/2 through the semester and basically said he doesn't care at all about his students mental health. Rude and demeaning, talks to students like they are children
Mr. Urquhart isn't a bad person, but he shouldn't be teaching entry level biology classes. There is no way to properly study for the tests and they are so insanely difficult that almost the entire class was failing all the tests. I would not suggest taking this course, especially if you have a harder time understanding science.
Alex is a great teacher, his lecture is dense but he goes over everything with you in class so make sure to go to class so you understand all the lectures. He's super funny and he makes the lectures enjoyable by adding funny stories and pictures. Some difficult tests so make sure to go to the review session if you need to and do all the reviews.
very understanding and is always welcoming to students. Takes pride in what he does as a professor
Alex was a great teacher. He knows what he is talking about and always made class less boring by telling funny stories. As long as you take good notes and actually put in effort for your cheat sheet, you will do well in the class. This is not a hard class if you stay on top of the few assignments and actually study for the tests.
This class was incredibly easy. The professor always made himself available and kept in touch even though it was an online class. We received updates nearly every week. His assignments were easy and well-laid out. No discussion boards or essays! I learned a lot without having to do a lot!
I am writing this review a year late but I still remember crying over how frustrated this course made me. Not only were the labs glitchy, but they served no true purpose in aiding learning the material for exams. The exams were failed by most if not all of the class, which he told us. Lectures were off topic and exams were full of unknown info.
Professor for online courses does not actually teach anything. All lectures were recordings of another professor teaching the material. Labs were from Labster, and homework was on Cengage. The course was also posted late on Canvas, due to "technological issues" which was frustrating because it was only a 7-week course.
Alex is hands down one of the best professors I've had at Boise State. I had to take this class last minute towards the end of my degree and I was pleasantly surprised. His lectures keep you engaged and he's great at explaining the material. His lectures are more open, not rigid. He likes discussions and an open platform. 10/10 recommend!!
Makes lectures fun, exams are pretty tough though.
Alex Urquhart has been a very engaging teacher. He always makes is lectures interesting to listen to including lots of jokes and answers any questions people have. Tests are difficult but there are lots of resources available for students to use. Available outside of classes to talk and responds to emails quick. Gives points if class av. is low.
Reached out to me mid semester because he noticed I was behind and he helped me get back on track. If you're going to take a class online, Alex is great!
Alex is a very funny professor and it is easy to sit in his lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but you will do a lot better on exams! Homework once a week and exams every so often. Exams aren't difficult if you study hard and take good notes. Highly recommend, he is a very nice, funny, and understanding guy.
He's funny and tries. But, he only lectures, and his class if kind of hard. He does his exams through the testing center so if anything happens or you cant make it, there is no way for you to make it up.
Funny, fair, understanding, and you can tell he cares for the students.
Alex was a good professor overall. I was 2 points away from a B+ and he wouldn't give it to me, but overall he was super easy going. He doesn't take attendance and has online lectures posted but I definitely found it beneficial to attend. Homework isn't difficult and tests are taken in the testing center. Overall enjoyed the course.
Loud, entertaining speaker.
Alex was a great instructor. His expectations were always very clear. I went to lecture, took notes, did the homework, studied with the study guides, and did well--so I would suggest doing the same. I also went to a couple LA sessions before exams and that was helpful. Alex is very willing to help, so long as you're trying so ask for help if needed
I adore Alex. Not a hard class, just chip away at the homework throughout the week cuz the assignments will take HOURS if you try to do them in one sitting. He's super cool, understanding, & he puts a lot of effort into making his lectures and powerpoints funny & enjoyable. By far my favorite professor this semester!!!
I really liked him the slides that he uses in class are very helpful, if you use the slides to study and take notes with and put in time to study you can do well in this class
Alex's lectures are funny, he talks a lot and loudly. The tests are confusing though, you can take perfect notes in class and see things on the test that were never discussed, textbook is important! He is also way slow, my lab grade was dipping because I was expected to do things we literally had not learned in lecture. We were 3+ weeks behind.
His lectures sometimes feel like I'm watching a stand-up comedian. His lecture slides are clear and attendance is part of the grade. The only flaw I'd have to say with his way of teaching is that he falls behind schedule. Even with very good exam notes, you will find questions on tests about things that were never discussed in class.
Alex was a great teacher! I appreciated all of his jokes and work he puts into lecture. Tests are hard because they were over 4-5 chapters at a time. It's my fault, but I had a really hard time paying attention in lecture, but lecture videos were a life saver. He is very kind and easy to access outside of class. He tends to go off topic in lecture.
Professor Urquhart is a funny guy and makes his lectures sometimes interesting. I would never take his class again because he was sometimes passive-aggressive during lecture and there is SO much content for a bio 100 class. like SO much.
I loved this professor and would highly reccomend. I took bio and lab at the same time so the workload was rough, but overall enjoyable.
Really enjoyed Alex as a professor. Engaging lectures, and incorporates humor well. Really passionate about the subject but tends to go on long tangents. Tests cover a lot of material, but he gives study guides that tell exactly what to study. Just stay on top of the homework and use the study guides and you will do well. I recommend this class.
I really enjoyed Alex and I think he is a great professor! Although, warning his tests are very hard but he does a decent job at giving material to properly study for the exams.
Alex genuinely has been one of my favorite professors. I am not good at science so I struggled, however, Alex did everything he could to ensure student success. The tests were challenging but he provides well put together study materials and study guides. I definitely recommend if you need a science credit you take it with Alex!
Overall good professor, tests are difficult. Lectures are more fun for everyone if you engage more. Review assignments are free points and helpful, do the 1 pt Learnsmart assignments as the test for that material comes up and you'll do much better on tests. Alex please make this a little bit easier, we're just trying to get into our programs :(
His lectures were super informative and he was super engaging during lectures. His class is primarily off of test grades so make sure to read the textbook and do the learn smarts.
Great guy and no homework only 4 exams throughout the semester and McGraw Hill assignments but they aren't due until the last day of the semester. Definitely take his class.
Professor Urquhart's BIO100 class is challenging but engaging. His lectures can be entertaining, and the study materials he provides are helpful. For exam prep, I found tools like Unstuckstudy and the textbook to be super useful.
This teacher is so unprepared and takes no accountability. Teacher posts the week's assignments on late Mondays (not Sundays). If you email about a problem, he just tells you you're wrong and leaves you unable to do the assignment until too many students complain.
Alex is genuinely a good and very passionate guy. I found his class to be quite hard, as bio is just hard for me. But he helps a LOT. Only 4 exams, and the mcgrawhill assignments aren't due til the end. The exams are pretty hard, so fill up your study guides. I would suggest you take his class!
Super funny and interactive during lectures, he does go off topic sometimes but it makes the lectures enjoyable. The lab was difficult but it is biology. As long as you pay attention, take notes, and do the learnsmarts and review assignments you will do great! Overall loved him and will miss him.
Alex is an excellent dude and his classes are relevant, entertaining, and overall a delight to be in. The tests are difficult, so beware of that. Be ready to study the material a lot. Go to office hours and he will help you for sure. I recommend any class from him.
This man has unimaginable lore. He's knowledgeable, hilarious, and is fair in his assignments. He does occasionally put things he didn't cover in lecture in the exams unintentionally. SPEAK UP IN CLASS- he appreciates interaction! Now all I need is for him to drop the name of his old garage band (you can't tease that and then NOT tell us!)
Professor Urquhart is a nice guy, good sense of humor & is very accommodating; but I've never met a professor who does less. Lectures are recorded videos from 2021 despite being marked as a “remote” class. Review sessions are scattered. Despite not doing anything he would take 6+ days to response to emails. Constantly had trouble with Canvas too.
He is a really good professor. You don't need anything for the class except for a way to take notes.
Alex is a really funny and great guy. He cares about everyone in the class and loves having engagement from students. Just make sure to take lots of notes if you don't want to fall behind.
Thinks he's funny but he's not.
Tests are decently hard but if you pay attention in class and study with other classmates it can really help. If you are confused on any topics he will take the time to explain them to you. He is a super funny dude and cares about his students. He is really passionate about bio and wants to share his knowledge and you can tell. Great professor!
Alex is an overall good professor. The tests are really really hard but there is plenty of opportunity to get your grade up with things besides tests. Lab is easy and free points, if you go to all of those and have good attendance in lecture you should have no problems passing this class.
