DON'T TAKE FRESHMAN COMP WITH HIM.........OR ANY OTHER CLASS FOR THAT MATTER!!!!!!
This dude is not a great teacher, but the course was pretty easy....gotta write papers, but only 5 total.
He liked me until he discovered that I knew English better than him. He should teach Chinese instead of English. He teaches high school level composition, not college level. If you want to learn anything, don't take this class! If you miss high school level classes, take this class by all means.
i am sick of his class....
Do not take him at all costs, does not know what he's talking about!
I heard he sucks in 1101- I had a guy in my class (1102) that liked him for 1102, but dispised him in 1101, so... if that influences your opinion at all. Class is really easy, and he's pretty freaking funny when you listen to his antics.

While teaching me how to write a paper, he also taught me how to analyze literature, movies and advertisments. Take this class if you want to get a B, cuz its almost impossible to get an A
Seriously, don't take INTRO TO THE NOVEL, he has no idea what he is talking about! Not to be mean, but their is no point to he class. We talk about a book while we are 1/2 way into another book. The quizzes kill you. Impossible to get a A!
This guy is still working on the english for himself... let alone teaching.
don't take his class he is a dumb ass, bad teacher!
he is an excellent teacher. It can at times be difficult to understand what he is looing for but he has taught me so much about how to write. He has taught me how to be focused and write a practical paper.
Terrible. Also, obsessed with Julia Roberts.
Hmmm. I'm a great student, high GPA, good writer... and I say take Comp with someone else.
Im a good writer and he gives me bad grades and with those who cant speak a word of english he gives them an A. what the hell is that. don't take him!! hes confusing. he doesnt explain to you well enough or teach you anything but expect you to "FOCUS". doesnt explain thoroughly.
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SOMEONE ELSE! This is the only class in my 2 years at this school that I have withdrawn from! He is the only instructor in the whole place I can't stand! I'm not just talking crap about an instructor that graded me poorly, he is bad! I am a journalism major, I want to write for a living, and I withdrew from a this class!
He stresses clarity and conciseness, but he can not practice such things when he is going off on tangents. I was very disappointed when we would correct papers in groups he would leave and we would not get any feed back from him until we received our grades. If you are stuck in a poor group, tough luck. He doesn't do anything to compensate for it.
He's the ultimate disappointment; how can someone drop from an "A" to a "D" in less than 2 weeks? For a math major, this is shameful to admit but it's probably math that only his puny brain can compute.
GREAT instructor! Gives detailed instructions on papers! Easy all around! :)
this guy made the class practice saying his name on the first day and then preceeded to ask me my name. i told him my name and he pronounced it wrong. i tried to correct him three times and in doing so got the attention of the rest of the class who understood what i was saying. Wang on the other hand acted like i was invisible and blew me off. he m
HE SUCKS! The class is so easy but he is a terrible grader~ Take him for the sake of helping the lil asian guy out!
Thought this dude is cool but at the end of the semester, final grade posted B on office door, transcript showed C. unreal !!!
One of the worst professors ive ever had! just graduated college and am still PISSED about him. he hated me from the first day of class for a reason i dont know. im quiet, dont talk to anyone and didnt do anything wrong. I honestly felt like he should have been sitting next to me in class raising his hand and asking questions. i leared nothing.
Class is easy overall, do extra credit!!! However group assignments suck, if you have a bad group you are going to edn up doing essays by yourself.
Very confusing teacher. I think his classes are mostly pointless. He talks about milk and weird things. I haven't learend anything and even if I have I've unlearned things, he's taught us a different way of writing, which is weird...
Very difficult to understand; ironically (that he is an english prof) he misplaces the emphasis on several words per class, almost every lecture!
and then?
he is the worsed professor in this whole campus,he gives points on what he likes and doesn't like.he will not give marks on what you work for.do not take this class unless you are desperate to take this class.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! save your money take someone else, he goes off on random tangents and confuses everyone in the class do not take this class with him!
I took his class as a PSEO student, I am an overall well spoken student but only received a C in his class.Told my class that if we didn't know what we wanted to do we were waisting our time being in school, so i stood up for us and pointed out that without us he would be out of a job. My grades on papers immediatley dropped from A's to D's. BAD!!!
A very good teacher, he makes clear valid points. I can see why some students would not like him because the majority of which don't take school seriously and thus think the class is unfair. Avoid him if your an idiot, like most of those in my class.
Mr. Wang is a very respectful person. He demands respect and gives it back. If you work well with high standards he is the perfect teacher. He furthers his students' knowledge by being blunt in the way he critiques and does not baby his students. He knows how to challenge his students to make their writing better.
Class attendance is mandatory, but attending the class is almost useless. Very harsh grade.
His attendance policy is strict, although being in class is a waste of time. He focuses too much on the boring basics of writing and critiques you if you write any way that is not of his liking. His participation points are based on your attendance which I find to be stupid because you can show up and not say a word and receive points.
He is a simple man, with a simple class. For freshman Comp. I wrote 4 papers (1,000 words each), 4 group papers (a waste of time)and read 1 book all semester. His class time however is dry and unnecessary. He speaks very bluntly and some do not like that, but he made it clear what he expected and that allowed me to know what I had to produce.
He is hard to get ahold of and criticism can seem harsh. But if you do what he says you WILL get a good grade. He comes off as arrogant, but he does know what he's talking about.
He trails off A LOT. Criticism is harsh, if you take it that way. Attendance is strict and VERY much mandatory. He knows his stuff though, and tries to help as much as possible. Does come off as arrogant, rants on about his last name means king in Chinese. Group papers=waste of time. But very easy papers.
I thought this class was super easy, there are only four essays total, which is pretty unbelievable for a freshman comp class, the first three only had to be 2 pages long. If you just do what he asks then you will ace the papers, Focus, Explaination and Detail. I barely had to try and got an A. He does take attendance.
He his very good in what he teaches.
He is an easy grader and you only have to write four essays. However he is an oppinionated hypocrite so if someone like that bothers you do not take this course. He is good at writing and has good thoughts on writing but everything else he says is not worth paying attention to. However if you do the work you should get a good grade.
Good teacher. Ridiculously easy class. He gives you more than plenty of time to do projects. In his class you will learn how to write cover letters, resumes, thank-you letters, business proposals, instruction manuals etc. Useful class and an easy A! Highly recommend.
Great teacher, always has the class laughing. I learned how to write with a focus in this class. Mandatory attendance. If you are good at keeping up with schedules you will do fine. I'm glad i didn't have a different teacher
Often took him several weeks to return grades for single page papers. Very particular grader, not worth trying hard on assignments, it seems he rolls a dice to determine your grade.
If pointless lectures, confusing tangents, prejudiced ideas, and lack of learning is your style, this is the class for you! For evertone else: run and hide! save your time and money with another teacher!!
Terrible teacher lectures about random stuff that is not useful. Attendence is mandatory and every minute of it is painful. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
Alex was my worst teacher by far. I would say that I'm a good essay writer (got A+s on all my high school papers) My first paper in this class got 100%, but after that I got Cs even though I used the same style and did what he asked. He gives no advice and his lectures are totally worthless. I got a 0/6 in attendance and I never missed a class.
Very little homework. Four papers to write, one about a book, other three are very simple. Easy grader if you follow the many examples of how he wants you to write them. Extremely boring class though, and takes attendance every class. Overall, it's an easy A if you can manage to keep showing up to class everyday.
Class was simple, only four papers. He also assigns group essays so make sure you like who you're siting by. Very silly guy, but he's nice. Just follow the way he wants you two write the papers and you'll do fine.
Yes the class wasn't the most lively but the essays we're straight forward and if you worked in your group during group essays, yours would be a breeze. In individual conferences he did comment on how to improve papers and often would outline them for you. He isn't the hardest grader, I got a 13 on my first and 16's on the rest. Easy class.
Nice teacher, he is very helpful and it was pretty easy class if you follow what he wants you to do. If i remember there are 3 or 4 individual papers and same with group papers and gives you enough time to do it. theres one book you have to read but pretty short book. overall just listen and do what he tells you and your good
He is not a very good teacher, in all honesty. His classes are really repetitive, and I have not learned anything new. If you are looking for an easy A, this is your class. If you are looking to expand your mind, try elsewhere. Also, he expects you to finish his sentences even in situations not regarding the material. I wasted my time.
Everyone who took Freshman Composition said it was unbelievably hard but Mr. Wang really made this a very easy class. There was barely any work or reading necessary outside of school. He goes over pretty much everything you need to know in a very simple way that is easy to understand. I would recommend him!
Alex Wang was fantastic. loved his class. He gave very useful feedback as well...I saw my essay scores go from 12 to 13 to 15 as the semester progressed. is pretty hilarious in class too. He always does a good job of demonstrating how what he teaches pertains to real life. if you don't like group papers this class may not be for you.
Alex is the most unbelievably boring teacher I have ever had, the people that are saying he is hilarious must have the worst sense of humor. His class is about as fun as eating a large five gallon paint bucket of sand. He grades his essays fairly easy, but still can not stand this man.
He teaches you how to write papers amazingly. It's pretty hard to understand at first, and most of my papers averaged around C because it took me a while to really understand what he was getting at. But I got a B+ on the last paper, and that's when I realized the true writing style he was teaching. Glad I took it, made me a better writer. F.E.D.
This has been the easiest English class I have ever taken. You have 4 group essays and 4 independent essays. He doesn't care about punctuation or grammar, what he focuses on are topic sentences. Easy A
In the end I would have taken a different teacher. He will grade you on his opinion and its not an easy A, it might be an easy C or B but not an A. He gives terrible feedback for the 4 papers you write in class. I would avoid in the future if I knew he wasnt understanding at all.
Worst teacher i've had at Normandale by far. Get ready for multiple group papers(!), that will each take up a week to work on in class. During that time you don't learn ANYTHING. I got a C on my first individual paper and an A on my second and I did nothing different. Class shouldn't be hard, he just grades in a nonsensical and opinionated way.
Alex is an okay teacher. Though incredibly boring, you learn a lot. The essays are graded pretty easy. Just look at the outline and write everything he wants, it doesn't have to be great you'll still get an A. Easy class, skip accordingly, group essays are easy and only take 3 days, his feedback isnt great, but the class is easy.
I had Wang for freshman comp and I got 100% on every paper I turned in. He has really specific criteria for how to write your papers, so just do what he says and you'll be fine. It definitely wasn't my favorite, but you can get an A!
I'm a writer, and I learned a lot on how to be a better writer from alex. His rubric is easy to follow and if you follow it you'll get A's, he doesn't care much about grammar. You'll have 4 group essays, but they're easy, we got 100% on all of them. Alex is a pretty weird guy, but he's nice. If you can write half-way decent, you'll do great.
Show up in his class and you will be fine.
Pretty easy class. Just make sure that when you write your essay write it HIS way. FOCUS EXPLAINATION, DETAIL
Prof Wang is an extremely kind person. His class was very manageable, homework wise. Group essays got annoying only because my group wasn't very helpful but besides that the class was great!
He's easy & I overall enjoyed his class. The assignments are pretty easy and the quizzes are not tough; you can google most of the questions. There is a group project and you will have to work in groups for the whole semester. As long as you do the work, turn things in on time, and put some effort into assignments, you should do fine in the class
His class was really easy. The semester consisted of 4 essays and 4 group essays. He grades easy and it's not a big deal if an assignment is later.
I mean hes fine but I dont know if Id take him again. Hes very specific about what he wants your essays to sound like to the point that its not very original. But Im getting an A right now so I cant complain.
This guy is so easy.
Focus explanation detail is all you have to know to pass this class with an A.
Cool and funny guy, very glad I took him. Write his papers his way and you'll get an A. Focus, explanation, & detail are very important in this course. 4 individual & 4 group essays, very easy topics.
Freshman Comp with Alex was an easy A. It takes a little while to get what he expects from your papers, but the moment you understand what he wants the essays will be a breeze to write. He does seem to ramble a little bit and won't move on until you finish his sentences. Other than that he is a very pleasant person to be around.
Alex was an alright professor, his lectures were VERY boring. He does a great job explaining what he looks for in essays and helps explain things if students don't understand. Group projects were usually nightmares but he provides an acceptable in-class period. 4 individual papers, 4 group papers is what you can expect. EASY A, but BORING lectures.
I liked Alex as a person, but I can't say I enjoyed the class. Lots of group work, you write 4 essays with your group, plus lots of readings with them. Group work is where the participation points come from. There are 4 individual essays, which aren't too hard. Lectures were pretty dry, but there was a movie in there. Really nice guy, though!!
Alex was a super nice guy. His lectures were a little boring but only assignments are 4 short essays and 4 short group essays. I got an A on every paper and it's required that you go to his office hours so he can correct your paper BEFORE you turn it in so you make sure you don't lose any points. Easy class would recommend Alex.
Can be very boring, but a very easy class for people who struggle with writing skills. You only do 3 individual essays and then 3 group essays. You must read a book for two of the essays but he gives lots of time to complete the assignments. Also, the first + second essays are not full essays since he uses the semester to build your writing skills.
Professor Alex Wang has taught me with his concise and simple(not to mention free) textbook how to construct an effective essay through critical thinking. He teaches you the core fundamentals of an essay and how to stay on track of what you are trying to state. His approach to writing development is encouraging and well thought out.
Focus, explanation, and detail!! There were 3 individual essays, 3 group essays, and 5 quizzes spaced out during the semester, you have enough time to do all of them. If you put in a bit of effort with completing stuff on time you will get an A, the papers are easy As (I was kinda lazy with the last essay so I ended with a B, but take Alex's class)
The entire semester consists of 3 individual papers, 3 group papers, and 5 quizzes. He made his own textbook and the quizzes are super confusing. You do have to work with one group for the whole semester so cross your fingers you get a good one. Not a bad prof but not well suited to online.
The entire class was based on a few quizzes and papers. He also only graded things out of 10 which was a little odd. Losing one point can tank your grade because of it. This class just isn't meant to be online. The group project was horrific, and the professor expected too much for an online class. It wasn't the WORST though
Not sure if its cause I took an 8am or hes just boring, but doesnt engage the class well. Half the essays are group projects. Light homework. Wish he didnt reference politics in every lecture. Cant even understand him half the time, is english his first language?
His lectures are the most confusing thing ever. Be prepared to teach yourself because it will all make sense and then he contradicts himself. 3 group essays, and 3 individual essays. Not bad at all workload-wise, but you'll understand nothing he says at all.
Brian was a good professor because he had no surprises as everything was outlined in the syllabus. The one thing I would say is it's pretty hard to get 100 on an essay. Regardless, this class is very easy to balance out with life and it's not assignment heavy at all.
If you read his textbook, write with focus, explanation, and detail, and lastly communicate with him if you have any issues, you should get an easy B. Real nice guy but can be boring sometimes.
Alex made this college english class very easy. Just do the work thats required and its an easy A. not heavy on homework and the quizzes are easy as well. would take again.
A really great teacher who cares and motivates students- Required to write like 3 individual essays (which were easy and about 1-2 page lengths). Also had to write group essays, but only graded on completion! He pushed back like every assignment due date for our class because everyone always turned their work in late (I was never complaining lol.
Pretty easy but kind of time consuming class. You write 6 essays total, 3 by yourself and then 3 with a group you are assigned to and are expected to meet with virtually over a call. Grading is somewhat unclear as he makes analogies to unrelated topics. 1 extra credit assignment is given at the end of the semester. Pushed back most deadlines.
Great professor, very quick responses if ever emailed. not a heavy workload and easy group projects if orchestrated well. Follow his three words Focus, Explanation, and Details and should be an easy A. Great class and professor overall.
You write 3 essays by yourself and 2 with a group. For me, he graded all of my essays with the same explanation every time. He reminds you of when assignments are due and gives extensions to almost every essay. Overall, I would retake this class, he was lenient on deadlines and he gave us a lot of time for us to write those essays.
Alex was a super geniuine professor. You can tell he really cares about his students and their well being. My one complaint is group papers. It's just super hard to coordinate meeting times with everyones busy schedules but he gives great feedback on your papaer and tells you exactly what you need to do to improve for next paper! Accepts late work!
I think overall he was a great professor. There's hardly any work to do for this class, as long as you get done what you need to when your supposed to. I do think he is a tough grader and he likes papers written very different from how I was used to. He used the word focus a lot, if you have focus in your essays you'll get a good grade.
Overall he is a decent professor, but he wants your essays written VERY different then what you are more than likely used to. He is a super tough grader too. There isn't a whole lot of work throughout the semester so that is nice.
Very caring professor. Pushed back every single deadline except for the last one. There were 5 super easy quizzes, 3 individual essays (+ critiques), 2 group essays, and a brainstorming video. He sends multiple emails on what to do so you don't fall behind. As long as you follow Focus, explanation, and detail, it will be an easy A.
