Professor Wrobel was a really easy-going guy and made lecturers really funny and engaging. He made the material really easy to understand and grasp and was always available to answer questions. Highly recommend him for future classes in the Earth Science Department
Literally so nice and an easy GE to take. He doesn't give many assignments it's mostly just lab worksheets, weekly quizzes, two midterms, and the final. He's really nice and as a non-stem major, this was good to take,
EARTH 4, Oceanography: I love this guy. He's adorable and really cares about student success. Midterms can be rough if you're not sure what to expect, he asks pretty specific qs.
alex is a great professor! i had him for both oceanography and antartica and i overall really enjoyed his teaching. his classes are lecture/slide heavy so just be sure to keep up. labs and weekly quizzes are easy!
I have taken two classes with Alex, Oceanography and Antarctica, and I have absolutely love him! If you pay attention in lecture he explains everything in a very engaging way. He is very passionate, and his love for all things earth science makes the learning environment very encouraging. If you are confused just talk to him!
He has such a good teaching style and is very enthusiastic about what he's teaching. He's young which helps him stay in tune with what students are going through and need these days. I'm not a stem major but he made science class fun and not as boring as it could be, and I learned a lot. Definitely recommend for a GE.
I took EARTH4 as a non-stem major and enjoyed it! His lectures go over a lot of material but he explains things in detail so it isnt hard to follow. There are 2 midterms and a final, as well as weekly labs and quizzes. All quizzes are open note and the labs are fairly simple. He is very good at answering specific questions if you have any.
Professor Alex is very engaging and explains all the oceanography concepts in ways I can comprehend.
He's AMAZING. Super passionate about the subject & enthusiastic in lectures. Content can be a bit confusing but he is accessible in office hours & always takes questions in class to help explain. Readings are not mandatory, everything on the midterms/final (which you're allowed to bring a cheat sheet into) are covered in his lectures.
Alex is great! He seems very enthusiastic about what he's teaching and I enjoyed the lectures.
He is passionate about the topics and is easy to follow.
Prof is a very engaging lecturer and prepares his students well with his very in depth lectures. Weekly quizzes and lab sections are the main assignements. 2 Midterms and a Final are manageable if you do the readings and attend the lectures. You are allowed a cheat sheet which is very useful. Good GE overall, a little more dense than other classes.
Absolutely goated. Favorite professor I've ever had, he is very into what he is teaching and overall has an amazing vibe. Don't skip lectures though if you take this class because he goes over a lot.
Cannot ask for a better prof than Alex for a class like this. He is clearly very passionate about the material he teaches and puts a lot of work into preparing the classes for us. The class has a lot of info in it, but cheat sheets are allowed in exams. Quizzes and labs help understanding. Overall a great prof and a great intro into Oceanography.
It feels like Alex is one of us, like he's on our side. Great lectures, and if you pay attention you will be fine on the exams. Cheat sheets encourage you to prepare for the exam cuz there's no excuse to do very badly. Ended with a 92.86 as someone who doesn't love science and am hoping the curve takes me to an A. Make sure you take one of his GE's
Alex is always super engaging and funny. He gave us study guides, cheat sheets, recorded lectures for if you miss a day. The lab content isn't on the midterms/finals. Didn't use the textbook - everything is on his slides. There are 2 midterms + final. Overall highly recommend this class. Curved at the end of the quarter.
Easy GE if you're looking to knock out an Area C. Alex's tests were very fair and he also graded on a curve. He posts recorded lectures online. All the test questions came from material on the lecture, so textbook isn't really mandatory.
Very passionate about what he teaches and is able to convey what material needs to be learned well. Not a harsh grading criteria and tests are decently easy if you pay attention.
Alex is an AMAZING professor who truly cares about his students. He is passionate about what he teaches and it shows through the level of care and detail that he puts into his lectures. He is genuinely kind and tries to make himself available to his students and is open to criticism and suggestions/
I took Earth10, and he is extremely passionate and knowledgeable in the things he teaches.(and his lectures are further enhanced by his charismatic personality.) Like today the projector broke down, and yet he was still able to teach us without his slides, which truly shows he knows his stuff!! He also includes cats in his slides sometimes :D 10/10
Alex is a great and enthusiastic teacher. He lectures are well organized and he posts recordings in case you miss class. He is very clear about what you need to study which I really appreciate.
such a cool professor !! nothing negative to say about him or Antarctica class. easy A if you pay attention in lectures and he gives cheat sheets for midterm and final :)
EARTH 10: lectures were great and all online. very nice professor and allows cheat sheets for midterm and final. clear what is on both and if you study and pay attention you can do good.
Great professor! Took his Antarctica and Oceanography classes, both really great. He clearly is very passionate, he also includes all the lectures and recordings online. He allows cheat sheets on exams as well. Highly recommend for getting science GEs out of the way.
Wrobel is an amazing professor. Super caring and knowledgeable. There are weekly labs in addition to class and they take attendance with a QR code. You have to turn in assignments during labs to help grasp the information during lecture. Midterm and final were pretty difficult, but you get a one page front and back cheat sheet
Super friendly guy. Entertaining lectures and cool content. You can tell he is very passionate about his research.
hard tests
Earth 4 is my favorite class I have taken at UCSB so far, and Professor Wrobel had a lot to do with that. He is very kind and passionate about oceanography/geography which makes his lectures super interesting. His tests aren't that difficult if you pay attention in lecture, especially because he allows a notecard.
A fascinating class even for someone not very interested in science. Passionate & knowledgeable teacher. Not an easy A, and will require decent amounts of time studying. 2 midterms + 1 final. Midterms allow a cheat sheet full size paper and final allows 2 papers- very useful but require time & I recommend writing VERY EXTENSIVE info on them.
Great professor. Pretty easy class. Lots of information to learn but he allows cheat sheets for the exams. He's super funny and sweet too!
A very nice guy, pretty easy class
I think his lectures are amazing and engaging. Although my major has nothing to do with oceanography, I would take his classes again. The grading is reasonable as well.
Favorite professor so far. Lectures are engaging, he is super understanding, and work load is very managable. Take his class!!
Alex is an awesome professor and is very understanding. Cheat sheets are allowed for his midterms and finals, only assignments are in section and some weekly quizzes. Pretty easy class as long as you pay attention. 2 midterms so it does feel like not much time in between tests. Loved this class and would definitely take his other classes.
Alex is such a kind and funny guy and makes his lectures very interesting. Sections are a little more difficult than lecture content since they dive into more specifics, but not too difficult. The weekly quizzes are very easy and the cheat sheets he allows for the midterm and final are very helpful. Overall an easy and interesting class!
Loved this course! Genuinely the only lecture I was excited to attend every week. Super interesting content and really made me consider doing an earth science minor lol. Tests allow cheat sheets but do have some tricky questions here and there. Labs are also fun! I ended up falling behind but still managed to get a decent grade bc of cheat sheets.
Wrobel is a great professor. His lectures are straightforward and easy to understand. In Earth 4, there are random attendance checks, and you get extra credit based on how many lectures you attend. Earth 4 is relatively easy, the labs in each section are not difficult and you can ask for help. Great professor who cares about his students.
Alex is an incredible professor who genuinely cares about his students and is passionate about what he teaches. He encourages students to interrupt him during lecture to ask questions and is very clear when explaining the material. You get two front and back sheets for the final and he provides a study guide as an outline for the cheat sheets.
Great guy and down to Earth. You can tell he loves his job. Go to every lecture and read the book. Also attend every lab and do good on the quizzes because your grade will drop big time if you dont. Only thing that really annoys me is how important the midterm and final are if you dont do good on those you won't do well. Will curve grades.
GREAT professor, he does iclicker for lecture, so attendance mandatory, 2 midterms and a final, but multiple choice and he allows a cheat sheet for all three tests. section was alright, but pretty boring and the labs were very tedious. alex is attentive and will always answer questions during lecture and cares about you knowing the material.
Really good lecturer, he makes an effort to make the content relevant and interesting. Labs were mandatory and worth 10% overall, lectures weren't. Midterm and final are mcqs and make up 75% of total grade, they weren't that hard but you definitely had to study to be getting 90%+. Overall interesting course and can do well without too much effort.
I loved this class. One of my favs yet. Professor Wrobel is clearly so passionate about the topics he teaches and it really makes a difference in the class environment. The powerpoints were posted and the exam questions were all taken from the powerpoints. Labs were easy. Overall such an easy class but also so interesting I learned so much.
wrobel is one of the best profs i've had here so far. lectures were easy to understand and he takes questions during lecture. the work consisted of a weekly comprehension quiz (8-10 questions) that was take home and worksheets during sec each week, which covered material not included in lecture so it could be difficult at times but still doable
Super chill class, lectures were actually interesting and engaging.
Really awesome professor! Lectures were very interesting and he was always open to answer student's questions and ensure they understood the material. He allowed a cheat sheet during tests and the exams were multiple choice. Awesome class!
Alex is a great professor! Very enthusiastic to teach and knows what he's lecturing on. He assigned weekly mcq quizzes that are probably less than 15 questions. The lecture was easy to understand. He had 2 midterms and one final, all mcq. Workload was light. Also offered extra credit and cheat sheets for the exam.
Amazing professor but he is a tough grader. I really loved all of his lectures and earth 4 was my favorite class ever. Just disappointed with my grade since he didn't curve it and I was 1% away from a B
Alex is a great prof! Lectures are engaging and he is passionate about ocean topics! Easy online quizzes each week, and cheat sheets for every test including final. Watch out for the midterms, they were easy with a cheat sheet but I still wasn't able to get a 100 on any of them, some concepts you have to really engage with to succeed.
He was my absolute favorite professor. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and that he is passionate about the ocean. To pass, all you need to do is pay attention and take notes. He is very understanding and even offers extra credit
Professor Alex Wrobel is genuinely one of the nicest and most caring professors. He cares about his job and his student's success, and gives his best effort to guide students and present information in a clear and interesting manner.
Wrobel is a greattt lecturer. He is easy to understand, good at explaining concepts, open to all questions, and overall really chill. He posted readings every week but I barely read any of them as he explains everything in class well. Earth 10 is a very do-able GE with him.
I took Earth 4 with Wrobel and he was great. The tests were kind of difficult since he knows a lot about oceanography; I heard that other classes with him were easier. Very nice and good lecturer
Amazing professor gave great lectures that were passionate and very interesting. I came into the class not expecting much but came out loving the material and content.
Alex is great!! Super nice, shows pictures of his cats when lectures get boring or are super long, is SUPER clear on office hours, provides study guides, and was very communicative. Sections were super fun!! My TA was great and super helpful as well
Amazing professor!
Professor Wrobel is an amazing Earth science professor. His class was a very easy GE. His grading policy is very fair and his lectures are very engaging. His office hours are incredibly helpful if you are confused on anything- I highly recommend going. His midterms and final exams were really easy. Honestly to pass, just memorize terms from lecture
Professor Alex Wrobel was genuinely one of the nicest and most caring professors I've had the pleasure in taking. He teaches the material in an engaging and interesting way, and is genuinely such a great person who is passionate about what he does, and passionate about his student's success :)
Attendance to lecture is not mandatory, weekly labs that are pretty easy. Super passionate prof that makes material easy to understand. If you pay attention in section/lectures and prep a bit before exams you will do well. Two midterms and a final.
Amazing professor !! Funny and kind, plus super engaging. Not too difficult if you pay attention and take good notes !! Very light and manageable workload. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in learning about Earth sciences !!
I loved Prof Wrobel. He's super sweet and passionate. Lectures are mostly interesting but can get a little dry. Tests are easy with a one-page cheat sheet allowed. Sections have one worksheet due at the end of class (they're all super easy). Highly recommend this class for a GE!!
Love him he is so nice and great lecturer and so fair. Front and back cheat full page cheat sheet for multiple choice midterm and final.
THE BEST PROF AT UCSB! Earth 4 was so easy you get to make cheat sheets for tests front and back. His slides are SUPER helpful and it helps a lot to attend lecture. Class consists of weekly quizzes 2 tests and a final but everything was really easy. Alex is so kind and is willing to help if you ever get confused. I def recommend taking his classes!
Wrobel is awesome! Took this class to fulfill area C and I'd highly recommend! No math on any of the tests, just on the worksheets in sections but they're easy and the TAs are super helpful. Weekly canvas quizzes, 2 midterms and a final (with a cheat sheet for each test). Overall a great class and great professor.
By far one of my favorite professors here, he's so sweet & understanding. Lectures aren't mandatory, going to them doesn't feel unbearable bc he's very passionate. Weekly quiz(1 chance), TAs are sweet and give good feedback. front+back handwritten cheat sheet, 1 midterm, 1 final. Accessible outside class w office hours usually off campus
If you're not a science major or have no interest in it (which I don't nor am I a science major. I actually suck at science and that and math are my worst subjects) you will struggle with the material. There are EC assignments you can do which are super easy though and Professor Wrobel helped me out so much when I was struggled and almost failed
Alex wrobel is my king this class slayed boots he is awesome pls take him! Take handwritten notes and do your cheat sheet and you'll be fine on the exams
Make sure you read the textbook and ask for help. I would not recommend this as an easy GE. Tests are all multiple choice so it can be a good or bad thing.
His last name is Wrobel because he's a W professor!!!! I took this as a science elective for my major and I loved it. The course was easy and he allows cheatsheets on the midterm/final. He is a great lecturer. Would 100% recommend this course to anyone looking for a good science GE or as a List A science elective for CS majors!
Loved this class, it's so chill but it's so interesting! The only issue was the TA's because some of them weren't helpful and whenever I asked for help in section, they sounded confused themselves. He had two mini writing assignments (1 paragraph). You are allowed a cheat sheet but please go over everything and make sure you put anything important.
Super interesting class, not too hard if you go to lecture and take notes. Professor Wrobel is the best and I would recommend him to literally everyone, he made class so fun
Alex's lectures were really engaging and made me actually start to enjoy Oceanography as a polisci major, HOWEVER, on every test there were like 10 questions that we had barely/didn't cover making it almost impossible to get an A in the class. Weekly quizzes were fine but the newly added podcasts were annoying and confusing in question format.
If you want to take an easy GE I'd say avoid taking this class. He is a nice professor but this class consists of a lot of info especially if you're not into science or chem. Test are all multiple choice but even if you study, most of them won't make sense and are often worded differently. Readings every week and are long.
just dont. got perfect scores on my weekly assignments but didnt do well on the tests which is what screwed my grade
Alex is a good guy and he genuinely cares about his students. If you're not a stem person, this isn't an easy class. It's doable, but you will have to study harder than your stem friends. 1 cheat sheet, but there are questions that have you “apply your knowledge.”
I am so grateful I took this course. Professor Wrobel is extremely understanding and compassionate as a professor -- he wants you to get the most out of his course, and was willing to help me out during a difficult academic time when I needed it. His passion and amazing lectures inspired me to love an study the material that much more!!
Really nice guy! I felt a disconnect between what we learned in class and what was on the tests even though I always went to lecture, section, and studied hard. This class was unnecessarily hard and the tests basically are your grade. Had to do it P/NP. Also the weekly quizzes are hard… Only take if you're really good at earth science!
His lectures were mostly pretty interesting, attendance was not mandatory. but if you want to go good go to class. He had weekly quizzes which required you to listen to a podcast. The class was very fair please take a class with him he is such a nice person. I went to his office hours just for advice about life and he was so welcoming and sweet.
This is a great class to learn about earths systems through Antarctica. Very clear lectures and labs are pretty helpful. Midterm and Final are multiple choice with a cheat sheet, but honestly if you went to lecture and spend a bit of time looking over slides and your notes you would probably be fine without one. Can get a bit boring at times.
Very relaxed environment and always making jokes to try and make lectures interesting. Weekly quizzes and section help keep your grade up if you fail both midterms, like I did, and final was online which he says is rare. The topics can be difficult to understand but he was a great professor that you shouldn't have a tough time passing the class.
Alex is a great guy! I'm not a STEM major, so I found the material challenging, but he helped me understand the concepts during Office Hours and via email. Labs and quizzes are easy, but the final/2 midterms are difficult if you struggle applying concepts (which I do). A good GE.
He is great very interesting lecturer.
He was great! He genuinely loved what he was talking about and explained the material in a very thorough and understandable way. There was no need for a textbook since the slides were so useful. As long as you pay attention to what he says, take good notes, and study the slides, you will pass this class with no problem. 10/10 professor.
TAKE THIS CLASS FOR YOUR SCIENCE GE! I am talking to you, humanities kids. Prof Wrobel makes the content and the concepts VERY accessible to even the most un-science savvy people. Lectures, while lengthy, are useful and he incorperates his life experience into the lectures. Very chill and laidback guy - very little homework, and picks good TAs.
Such a nice guy! Attendance wasn't mandatory, but slides are picture heavy, it definitely helps to listen to the lectures. He seems passionate about his work and it shows.
If you want an easy GE this is not the class for you! I wish I would've known before. His lectures are extremely heavy and exams are multiple choice which can mess you up since they don't make much sense.
He's an amazing professor and super charismatic, but the tests are pretty hard and really based on memorization and concept knowledge
prof wrobel is great!! he's really caring and is really passionate about what he teaches. The tests were average, but he gave us a cheat sheet. attendance in lectures isn't mandatory, but section is. Sections are labs, but were always pretty quick and easy. Highly recommend for a GE!
LOVED professor Wrobel and his class. Although it was a lot, it was manageable and my TA was awesome. He's such an engaging lecturer and feels really approachable and accessible outside of class. Attendance isn't mandatory but the info from lectures is so important so definitely show up. Taking his other LD class next quarter and very excited.
Lecture is not mandatory, weekly small section 'labs' are mandatory. Midterm and final were mp with a cheat sheet. Caring and interesting prof, would take again
Honestly did not have many expectations coming into this class, I had heard it was "hard" but in my experience it has been pretty chill. He is an amazing lecturer and you can really feel his passion and energy which was quite refreshing. Tests are fine since we are given a cheat sheet. Overall 10/10 class and professor would take again.
mr alex! what a goat. very humble guy and loves what he does. overall beautiful human. weekly open book quizzes, sections are mandatory but he picks amazing TA's who give out weekly worksheets open book as well, and midterm and final he allowed a cheat sheet. take his class serious and you will pass! love this guy, gonna miss u mr alex
I really loved him as a professor, he is clearly very passionate and makes his lectures engaging. However, i attended every single lecture and studied so much and still received a B because 2 midterms and 1 final make up 60% of the grade and there were some gotcha questions. Id still take his class again!
good teacher but do not take this as a GE if you want an easy A. The tests were extremely hard even with a cheat sheet. average in this class was a B which should not be normal for a GE
This was a fun GE to take because of how passionate Alex was on the material. For the midterm and final the only studying I did was making the cheat sheets and I was able to do well, but there was some tricky questions. The online weekly quizzes and in-class labs help boost your grade. Just make sure you're actively learning and you should do fine!
Just pay half attention and put an effort into your cheat sheet, and it should be an easy A! As a humanities major, this was a lovely GE!
