Dr York is amazing!! I loved having him for calc 1, my class was flipped style so we watched videos and home and in class we would do problems and dr york reviews important things from the lecture. I liked that sm more than traditional style its a lot easier to understand the material and dr york explains everything rlly well!!
I took this class flipped. I had lectures online and had to attend class for a 5-7 minute lecture and spend the rest of the time doing a worksheet (basically for attendance). The online lectures are not done by Dr. York and it shows because they're awful. Dr. York is a phenomenal professor, but honestly, all you need for this course is study edge.
Dr. York is an excellent teacher. He explains calc so well and if you pay attention when he talks you'll benefit immensely. His class is flipped and the online lectures are not by him (they're not helpful) but his short in-class notes make up for it.
Prof. York is by far one of the worst professors i've encountered so far. It doesn't help that this is a flipped class. You'll show up, get a worksheet, and turn it in next class. He gives the occasional weird cat book or worksheet (news flash, they're his REAL cats). This class is a waste of time and unbearable if you don't have study edge.
Math has always been my weakest subject and I was dreading having to take calculus, especially after only taking pre-calculus in high school. I know for a fact I wouldnt have passed if it wasnt for Dr. York. He genuinely cares that his students understand the material and wants them to succeed. This c+ was my biggest accomplishment this semester!
I had a great relationship with York in flipped Calc 1 and I absolutely loved him! He was very attentive to student's questions and I could really tell he was passionate about Math. Next semester I heard he will be the Main Lecturer; he will do great! He lectured for about 15 minutes in my flipped class and was always able to explain things well!!!
By far the best math professor and maybe the best professor I have ever had. He cares so much about his students, so approachable, and explains calculus in a way that is so easy to understand, he makes his class so organized which makes learning calc so much easier and enjoyable. I am not a math person but he makes math make sense.
Best math professor and one of the overall best professors I have ever had. If you need to take calculus at UF TAKE IT WITH YORK! His class is so organized and he is so patient with his students. Explains calc in a way that actually makes sense. He actually cares about his students and he will work with you if you need help.
The nicest and best teacher in the math department
York is the best professor I've had at UF so far. 100% recommend taking calc with him.
Hes a good teacher and goes very slowly on all concepts. Its very helpful for getting the basics of all his lectures. That being said, he never gets to any hard problems that would be on the test so discussion section or study edge is the only way to figure those out. But getting the basic principle really helps with the hard ones, so good overal
Great professor, really cares about his students!
If you're considering having him for a traditional class experience, I would consider someone else. His teaching approach is more "hands-off" than other math professors I've had at UF. After taking his class, I don't believe that he had a want for his students to succeed, and it showed throughout the class. I will never take a class with him again.
Although everyone here says he is great for flipped (well as long as you can teach yourself) you will get the opposite experience in traditional. The homework (Xronos) and especially quizzes were "busy-work" and were generally not useful for exams (which is your whole grade basically). And he doesn't give you the tools to succeed.
Actually, he doesn't give good feedback. If you go to his office hours and ask him about your concerns (understanding the info) he'll just provide you with a brief, unhelpful suggestion. Maybe he's good for students who are comfortable with Calculus previously and can teach themselves the material, but if you aren't, I wouldn't take him.
Doesn't give good feedback when you ask. Grading criteria on exams is unclear on many occasions. Like for FRQs you'll get points off for something that you didn't even know you needed to include in your answer, lazy test-making that will only mess you up. Discussion classes were pointless; it was a more confusing experience.
Don't take this class with him. You'll be alone in terms of understanding the material and trying to get help in office hours. It won't help and you will only be more frustrated in the class. He'll just help with a particular question, but is not good with helping you understand the material/concept beyond lecture.
York is a great teacher, he thoroughly explains everything and goes slowly to make sure he solidifies the concepts. His lecture notes are very helpful. Math is not my thing, but his lectures helped me understand it a lot better. Exams are basically your entire grade though, so definitely starting studying and practicing for them days in advance.
Before the pandemic he was an excellent professor during lectures, however, when we switched over to all online, he just uploaded old lecture videos that were so unhelpful! Everyone seemed to be lost, but this could have been prevented if the pandemic didn't happen. GET study edge, it's the only reason why I finished with an A.
I found questions on the exams to be quite harder than any of the ones done in class. I only did well in this class with the help of study edge and immense studying. Math is not my thing and I found York to be good for learning the basics of the lesson but had to work on my own to understand the difficult questions that would be on the tests.
Such an amazing professor, I would take his class over and over again. He made things so easy to understand and was so fair in his exams!
His exams were way harder than past exams. I did great in every aspect of the class except the exams because they were brutal. He mad them way harder than past exams. Don't be fooled by how easy things are compared to his exams.
Although he means well, Professor York was a horrible professor. He rushed through material and his exams were nothing like work done in class. His tests were also very weirdly graded but weighed so much.
Lots of extra credit, exam questions are tougher than homework but theres a bunch of extra credit on all the exams that more than makes up from it. Theres so much extra credit on the exams its impossible to fail. Lectures werent that helpful but just do your homework and youll be fine.
Is a decent professor but would not choose to take it again with him. Why? Because his lectures do not really cover exam questions and sometimes he will spend 30-40 min over two questions and rush the important bits. If you want an A with him tho, just read the book, do all the practice exams, and do good on the exams.
York was a great professor to have for calc 1 freshman year. He was funny, knew the material and was willing to go back and explain for anyone who was confused (even through zoom). Over all great professor and good dude. Watch out for trick questions on tests tho.
I feel that York did a great job. I took the class online and he was available after class and during his office hours if you need additional help. If you actually pay attention in the lectures and do the homework, you will do well. Also, I was shocked that this was my easiest class considering I didn't even take pre-calc in high school.
Such a good professor, especially when dealing with COVID. A professor who seems like he actually cares about you and your wellbeing. Attend office hours as soon as you don't understand anything so you don't fall behind. Grade heavily weighted by exam scores but that's to be expected. Take this class with him, I am so glad I did.
Dr. York did a great job at caring for his students during COVID. Even though his tests are pretty hard, he offers many resources and past exams for you to study from. He also responds to emails very fast! Overall, he is a fun and helpful professor. Online school has been tough on everyone, but his class is very doable with some extra help.
Dr. York explained everything very clearly, but he often made things more complicated than things needed to be. Despite that, he made sure that everyone had a chance to ask questions and answered things on a timely manner. Overall amazing dude, just do your homework and attend lectures and you got it.
Professor York is a good person but not the best professor. While a class like this comes with the expectation of a lot of studying, York does not provide the best materials to study. Lectures and homework are too easy while exams are difficult. It would be helpful if York did harder problems in class and gave questions similar to exam format.
Dr. York definitely knows what he is talking about and made calculus seem a lot more approachable. my only complaint is that for a few topics he made them seem a bit more difficult than they could have been. Get studyedge and put in some work and you'll get an A
York is a cool dude who makes calc seem relatively easy. However, the class is weighted heavily based on tests that aren't even made by him. The tests themselves are absurdly difficult in comparison to the practice exams and past exams. If you've taken AP calc before, you'll be fine. Wouldn't take again since he doesn't drop anything meaningful.
Loved York for MAC2311! He's a funny guy and has great lectures. His format is super clear and concise and he knows what he's doing. He has plenty of office hours through your TA's and himself. Be wary, exams and final make 75% of your grade. He has plenty of resources to study for exams and with some prep, this class is very manageable.
This class was hard and takes time to study and understand the material. I think the exams weren't similar enough to the material we learned so you should use outside resources to pass as well. The professor is nice but there are so many other students that it's easy to get lost. The TA's are in charge of the weekly quizzes that get harder.
The level of difficulty of Dr. York's lectures compared to the actual exams are nothing alike. When it came to the exams, I did poorly with a weeks worth of studying. The department creates the tests and I think York needs to include examples that are the same level of difficulty as showcased in those exams. No test grades are dropped and no curve.
Professor York is entertaing and funny however the problems he explains in lecture are significantly easier than the questions on the exam. I recommend him if you already have calculus knowledge and just need to retake the course.
Although I got a mediocre grade in the class, Dr. York helped me so much in the end. The class very tests heavy and you have to start studying weeks in advance. Do not solely rely on study edge, although it is very useful I think it is easier than the exams.
Dr. York was a very good professor and his lectures were very informative. Very helpful if you bring questions to office hours, however expect to wait a bit before being let in. The exams are definitely challenging compared to practice exams and lecture examples, so this class will probably be tough if you dont come in with past calc knowledge
Dr. York is my favorite professor so far! Everything you need to know for the exams are given to you in the lectures. He is super responsive to the zoom chat and also stays after class to answer more questions. I got A's on all the exams with minimal studying: I would only take his practice exams and review questions I got wrong.
Dr. York is the best professor I've had so far and definitely the nicest professor for Calculus. He gives great lectures and won't kill you with extra work. MAC2311 and 12 inherently very test heavy classes no matter the professor so I don't think that can be held against him
Dr. York was a great calculus teacher. Every lecture was easy to understand and was actually in the given exams. Not that much homework was given. There's a quiz after every lecture but they were easy. Of course, you still need to review and study just a bit for the exams though. You could get a good grade if you just put in a little effort.
Super nice and Great At explaining concepts during office hours
calc 2 is one of the hardest classes ever but dr. york made it possible. his lectures are very clear and helpful. take calc with him
I loved Dr. York! Even though I hated learning about Calculus, he made the class bearable. He was funny and put content into ways that students could understand. He was very transparent about grading and tests. Though, I had to use Study Edge as this class is just notoriously hard.
Dr. York is very good at explaining the basics of what you need to know for Calculus. It is very easy to follow along with his lectures. If you want to do well in this class make sure to do the Xronos HW assignments as well as the problems provided in the textbook. Study edge is also very helpful in this class but not necessary.
Calc is a tough class, but really the TAs are always open to help and York explains things super well. Going to the lectures is not mandatory, but there is attendance plus you will understand the content better if you go. DO THE HW, it is your most important resource in the class. Also, past exams are really helpful. York is a wonderful prof!!!
Professor York is a very good professor. I had him as an online lecture course and he was very sweet and made sure to answer all of my questions. His class relies heavily on tests and discussion quizzes. Make sure to look at previous tests. Those helped me a lot on all the exams. Also, I recommend looking at harder problems than what he goes over.
Dr. York is a very nice guy who makes things very clear for you. If you do not understand something, I recommend immediately using other resources to gain a better grasp of the subject. The one thing I did not like about Dr. York is that he would sometimes spend excessive amounts of time explaining proofs which did not really help on the exam.
York's style of teaching is LOTS of writing. He goes pretty slow so I honestly just rewatch the lecture recordings and take notes like that. Make sure you study the past exams before the test because the same themes might be repeated. The TAs are pretty nice but can be confusing to understand sometimes. Overall, a decent professor but not perfect.
Overall good professor. The lectures usually are easy to follow and recorded, no clicker questions participation is graded by an easy post-lecture quiz. The tests are usually harder than the homework (which is accuracy with unlimited attempts) and the lecture problems, but I managed to get an A with past exams. Study Edge helps but not necessary
Did a lot of proofs which didn't really help much. He's an alright professor, but I'd want to get someone else next time. He's nice, and funny sometimes, but I just didn't "click" with him, idk.
York was an alright professor. Not the best but definitely not the worst math teacher Ive had. Sometimes he would spend time doing proofs and then at the end say they wont even appear on the exams. His lectures were pretty clear and straightforward most of the time.
Spends a large proportion of each lecture on proofs that aren't on the test at expense of practice problems. HW is usually pretty lengthy and is graded on correctness by the glitchy Xronos platform. Lectures cover 75% of what's needed for the HW, which covers 85% of what's needed for the exams. You'll need to do some outside learning to do well.
Having been familiar with most of the material before I started, the class was quite easy. The structure of the class, both the lectures and Canvas was very organized. The discussion class is mandatory but lecture are not as you can just watch the recorded lecture videos or go via zoom.
I wasn't the biggest fan of his lectures, but they were good enough! Exams were very tough and unless you have a strong calculus background, this class can be very hard. The best thing you can do is study the past exams, study edge was great too.
Took the class online, was the easiest calculus class and I ended with a 114%. You could earn 90 points on each test, but was only graded out of 80, and he offered 5 points extra credit if you did some questions from previous exams. He was in literally none of the lectures, but he was nice to me whenever I asked him (sometimes stupid) questions.
Professor mainly teaches things on a conceptual level and doesn't show many examples. I used Studyedge and the lecture material was used as review if I needed it. Get studyedge for this class or you'll struggle when it comes to discussion quizzes and exams, as exams count for 70-75 percent of your grade!
Average calc 1 professor. He was pretty accommodating for the most part. Nothing special. Highly recommend actually putting effort into the Xronos homeworks and using the available past exams when studying for exams
York was pretty good. I had never really been excited about math until I took York. His lecturing style isn't great for taking notes so watch the lectures without taking notes in person then immediately afterwards review the recording and take notes on that. The class has a free online textbook. It is good, use it.
His style is not for everyone, but as long as you watched the lectures and actually do the HW, you will be fine. The HW questions are so much harder than the tests
Professor York is clearly passionate about math. however, his explanations are often confusing and long winded. he explains basic theorems by first completing the long proof. he focuses too much on conceptual ideas and proofs rather than providing example problems and showing actual application.
Class is primarily based on exams. Homeworks and discussion quizzes barely matter unless you heave through exams. Lectures are heavy; most times, York offers a long, winded explanation instead of a to-the-point methodology. Confusing and unengaging, made it difficult to learn material during class. Exams are ridiculously hard. Not worth it.
For each thing he taught, he would give at least one example applying that thing. Also, you have access to past exams, which usually resulted in the same grade that I would get on the actual exams. He did move pretty quickly at times, but it is part of the curriculum and his teaching was good.
Spends too much time in class explaining why certain theorems work, but not on different ways to do the problems. Doing the previous exams help, but make sure to try on the homework because that is where most of your learning will come from not the lecture.
Professor York had a clear guideline of expectations/grading for the class. The practice tests were representative of the actual exams, and the homework was a good practice tool. However, the lectures often overcomplicate the concepts tested, so I found Study Edge to be useful in providing clear explanations.
Professor York is organized and his lectures are clear and easy to follow. In order to succeed on exams, emphasis should be put on homework and other outside-of-class materials. Weekly discussion quizzes can be challenging, studying for these will help students to be more successful.
York was a very solid math professor. His style of lecturing got tedious at times because he just writes on a piece of printer paper that's projected onto a screen, but generally they were bearable. The exams cover material covered in class and there's no surprises. As long as you show up to lectures and do the homework, you should be good.
York was kind but lacked in helpfulness and informativeness. His lectures were written out but never recorded, making it difficult to review and comprehend the material if you did not attend class. Study edge became a necessity to pass the class. Overall, the experience left much to be desired. Also, your TA will make or break your experience.
Alex does not care about if you are learning in the class at all. Man walk in 2 minutes before class starts and has no personality. I heard that the other professor it much better, so try and get him if possible. Overall, the lectures are useless unless you already know the course as literally all he does it copy from a sheet dosen't explain.
I enjoyed his lectures his way of taking was easy to understand
Alex York is the type of professor no one should have in their time at UF. He is as unenthusiastic as they come. Comes in to class with 1 minute to spare and acts like a robot. Not helpful at all!!! Just watch the video lectures on canvas and you'll be fine, but going to watch this "professor's" lectures will just be a huge waste of time!
Whatever you do don't take York as your professor!!!!
Bad at lecturing.
Does not know how to teach
I recommend the other professor or even taking the course online over taking it with York
If you want to keep your 4.0 don't take him as your professor!
They really do be hiring anyone at this point
Honestly he's pretty good. You're not gonna get too personal with him but it's also a large lecture hall. He explains concepts very well I would say if you take this class it's good to also watch the lecture videos from the other professor on canvas. If you can't get stresse get York over any other calc professor
Very skilled mathematician but a somewhat poor lecturer. Supplementing his lectures with either the online ones or Study Edge is a necessity to do well. Expectations are mostly clear but tests had a few curveballs. Grind practice problems if you wish to do well on exams.
Lectures are really hard to understand. If you want to do well in his class, you have to get Study Edge or watch Streese's video lectures.
This professor wasn't the class coordinator, so he tried to copy the lectures of Dr. Shabbaz, but didn't do a good job explaining and frequently fell behind. When he fell behind, he told the class to watch Shabbaz's online lectures because there would be material on the quiz that he didn't cover in class. I ended up to Shabaz's lectures. (MAC2313).
Put good instead of OK because of minimal HW. Guy comes 5 mins late and free-writes on printer paper as his way of teaching. The class wasn't hard, but he overcomplicated basically every lesson, so I usually watched Streese's videos after class. TA is hit or miss, fortunately mine was very helpful. As long as you can do the HW yourself you're fine.
Decent guy, bad lecturer. Just don't put off studying.
I took professor York for MAC2313 (calc 3) idk why that isnt an option for course code but hes not a good lecturer and very slow. Hes a nice guy and will help you individually as he's pretty good at math, just not good at teaching. The online shabazz lessons are what helped me pass but im a math major so im a bit biased on the difficult of course.
I had Dr. York for an online section of differential equations and I can only say positive things! The lectures were from Dr. Demas and were great, and his testing and grading criteria was straightforward! I ended the class with a good grade and have no complaints!
This teacher graded fairly and was what I expected for a survey calc course. It is a bit of work, but if you takes notes and study you should be able to get a decent grade in the class. Nothing crazy stressful, but takes sometime to finish the homework.
Dif EQ is easiest course in Calc1-DifEq progression. Plenty of extra credit; I ended up needing a 7% on the final for an A in the class. York's lectures are totally fine, he's a clear lecturer, but I really only went to class to see if he'd ever change his shirt (he did twice throughout the semester). Exams are carbon copies of practice exams. Easy
tbh bad lectures and they get very long for summer C. I didn't like how he would mess up during the lectures and didn't explain his train of thought. Diffeq isn't hard but it got confusing with his lectures
This was a great class! The lectures are kind of boring and the homework takes a long time, but I think this class works really well being online. Spend maybe 2 or 3 hours a day (including the 1hr lecture) and you should be fine. Exams are very fair and straightforward, but be weary for tricks!
Busywork, busywork, busywork!! Next to zero extra credit, exams are weighted heavily. Homework is incredibly time-consuming. His Summer C lectures were disorganized and sometimes quite long. Expect a fairly straightforward but time-consuming class. Exam content is straightforward, but this class feels more like applied precalculus than calculus.
The lecture videos were good means of learning, but they were monotone and boring especially with the long lectures at the end of the course. The exams are weighted heavily, but the exams are easy if you take the time to study and do practice exams that are provided.
Bang average professor, long boring lectures he zips through without much explanation half the time. Homework takes a ludicrous amount of time to do for what the content is. That being said, the class concepts are not hard. Just be ready to spend 3 hours on one unit between the lecture/lecture quiz/hws.
Honest person, goes through examples in class, and is willing to work on any number of questions with you during office hours.
This course is very organized. Lecture videos are great but long. 30 lectures total. 4 tests heavily weighted at 70% but are really easy to get 100 on if you study, and is the same question type as the practice test. This course is conceptually easier than calc 3 but much more time consuming due to heavy computaions. 1 hour studying per day likely.
I've never said something remotely similar but I seriously hope this guy tears both of his ACLs
He's a whatever lecturer but the course is very easy to follow along with and the lectures are super missable if you're a good math student and so I rarely ever went and was still able to get a very easy A.
I took Dr. York for Calc 3 and liked him enough to take him for Diffeq! His lectures are clear, straightforward, and easy to comprehend.
There are about 2-3 lectures per week, and each lecture has a 10-20 question homework as well as a quiz with 3-5 questions. The tests are exactly like the quiz questions and are pretty easy. I never had to interact with the prof during the course because it was online and I had no technical difficulties. The beginning of course is easy, end is meh.
