Expects you to know every little detail of church history.
Testing center printout should read, 63% = A, Nice Job!!
Difficult tests but good curve, very interesting lectures, loves the subject.
This teacher really knows his stuff! Although his tests are on the hearder side, he is always there, ready to help you.
Dr. Baugh really enjoys what he teaches, and every student in his classes knows that. His tests may be hard, but it all works out in the end. One of the finest professors at this school.
This guy was sweet. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had! His class requires alot but if you are getting 2 credits for the class you better work. Awesome guy!!!!
Excellent teacher. Knows church history as good as anyone!
He knows his stuff. Don't worry about failing the tests because he gives a huge curve. Lectures were interesting but stressful becuase there is just too much information, tests and quizes are impossible becuase he expects you to know all the details.
Very knowledgeable about church history. Nice guy. My problem: taught false doctrine, never gave sources to back up discussion, and I didn’t feel the spirit. The tests were straight memorization of what was in what section. In review, he admitted test questions unclear. 1/4 test based on one day.
Hard tests, but nice curve. His tests are centered around dates, sec #'s, and names of individuals. No doctrine is found on the tests and really not taught in class. More of a history course than religion class.
He'll make you work, but the class is amazing. If you want a cake class, don't take him. But if you want to learn sweet stuff about church history, definitely take him. He makes you read lots of outside articles, but that was my favorite part of the class. They were sweet. You'll fail the test, but the curve will save you every time.
Very smart professor. If you are good at taking notes this class is for you. His tests are really hard, but he grades on a curve. If you get about a 65% you can expect an A.

Classes were a lot of fun and this guy definately knows his church history. It's fun to see a teacher that is actually excited by the stuff he teaches. The tests were way hard. I got a 72 on my first one but the curve brought that up to an A.
AMAZING professor! He really knows what he's talking about, is extremely helpful, and quite funny. He's always available for help, is extremely fair, and just an amazing and excellent teacher.
I took this class with him before my mission. Helped a lot. I learned a lot of church History loved the class.
I learned so much in Bro. Baugh's class. The tests were usually over 100 questions, but if you study the material (pretty in depth), you'll do great. I got an A in the class, but I did put quite a few hours in studying for the test. So, it's a little hard, but you definately learn so much. He's fun and always adds little intersting facts.
Brother and sisters this man is the best teacher you will ever have. The only thing stopping him from being transfigured, are his students. I learned more in his class then in any other religion classes I have taken. His tests were easy because you learned the stuff in the class. I hope that someday everyone will take his course someday.
Professor Baugh has been the best professor I've had a BYU. He is amazing. You should all take his class. The tests are hard, but with the curve you can easily make an A. He has such a passion about what he teaches. I could listen to him talk all day. Not a lot of outside work. We never wrote papers. Take the class if you get a chance!
Bro. Baugh is an awesome and very imformed professor but this 2.0 credit class will work your butt off more than most 3.0-4.0 credit classes. His tests are impossible and are totally demoralizing. I would highly recomend visiting with him but don't take his class unless you are into painfull experiences.
I hated this class. The Church history was great, but his tests were terrible. Over 160 multiple choice questions with options such as "two of the above, three of the above, none of the above", and options A - J on the bubble sheet. The curve only helps if you are good at memorizing.Take this class if you want to feel like crap after every test.
The man is brilliant, but has totally unfair expectations for his class. He'll expect you to memorize every word he says, and he goes through the material so fast that there is never time for class discussions. Oh, and the tests are horrible.
He knows EVERYTHING...BUT the workload is not worth the measly 2 credits you get at the end of the semester. The tests are literally impossible; he has to curve them down to almost 60% for an A. Nice class to audit, not register
lets just say every comment made towards his tests are true. he holds a quiz at the beginning of class every day, and those questions arent on any of the tests. comments he mentions briefly are on the test, (which does consist of about 110 questions)TRUE- he does base it on a curve, but even if you're a genius, your test score isn't going to be goo
This class was very difficult. I, however, would recommend it for a summer class, when you may not have as much work to do from other classes. But from just the Church History aspect, he knew his stuff, and did well in explaining it. It definitely was not a Sunday School class like some religion classes are here.
He definitely knows his stuff, but he still feels like he has to prove that he knows more than you, and his tests reflect that. Things that were very briefly passed over in class will be on the test. He tends to focus more on speculation than doctrine.
Test answers usually a) xxxx smith b) Hyrum c) another man d) a and b e)a and c f)none of the above g)all of the above. 40 questions asked small details pertaining to the exact content of a section of Doctrine and Covenants. Not a religion class for logically thinking people. Take him if you enjoy speculation on doctrine instead of true
He is very engaging and knows his stuff. There are very hard quizes given at the begining of class, but attendance and easy article help out the grade. Test are hard and detail oriented but are graded on a sharp curve. Very enjoyable class.
Worst teacher I've EVER taken. Actual Test question: "Where did Joseph Smith receive his visit from Moroni?: A) cut log cabin B) framed home C)Manchester NY D)Fayette NY E) 2 of the above F) 3 of the above G) None. WHO CARES?! NEVER TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS GUY. His class focuses on stupid details rather than doctrine. Worst class I've taken at BYU
This was the hardest religion class i've ever taken--and whats sad about that is that I could have learned the same with another professor without all the stress. He knows his stuff, but he really just shows off by reciting whole scriptures in class, and making the tests impossible. Do yourself a favor and take this D&C from someone else.
Baugh is a great professor. If you can read, you can get an A in this class. This was the easiest and most interesting religion class I ever took at BYU because most of the info was new. If you attend all the classes and do the readings, you can get an easy A no problem.
The lectures were interesting, but the tests were tricky and not really designed to test what you've learned. I think all three of the exams were well over 100 multiple choice questions of extreme detail! If you love the D&C from a historical approach, then you'll love the class, but all the other stuff you have to do make the class difficult.
Reading the other comments, yes i agree his tests are hard, but if you go to class and actively take notes, you CAN do well. Not only does he base the test on a curve, but he gives the students a chance to retake the questions they missed-- giving half credit for each correct answer! If you ask, he is more than willing to help! You can gets A's!!!
Daiy reading assignments with quizzes, plus quies on class lecture daily. Tests are really hard and lonh
His tests are ridiculous, but heres something that might help if you get stuch in his class--retake them. He only makes you retake the questions you got wrong, and if you remember what you answered first, you have a pretty good chance of guessing right the second time around. But know that you were warned...
Great class! He knows his stuff, and he's so excited about Church History, it's contagious. Getting an A isn't very hard if you put some time into it. Approachable guy, great class.
A lot of reading but he's a good, friendly teacher. I took church history from him, which wasn't extremely spiritual but I still learned a lot.
Brother Baugh is an amazing teacher, and I would definitely recommend this class! Yes, his tests are extremely hard, but there are many ways to get a good grade in this class. Brother Baugh is one of the best religion teachers I've had at BYU!
Horrible professor! don't take from him at all!!! He treats each class as a performance...so ANNOYING!!! Tests are ridiculously hard...and he doesn't give any study guides or anything!
Kind of an obnoxious professor. Tests ARE harder than necessary--especially if you're not very good with religion. The one thing that saved me was being able to retake EVERY test and only have to answer the questions I got wrong. I wouldn't recommend him.
Took this Independent Study. Very tedious, for every paragraph in the book, you basically had to write a summary. The additional readings I found very interesting, but some of the tests were difficult to understand what he was looking for. His grading was easy to adapt to, just lots of reading and writing.
He is the best professor I have ever had!! The class is so informative and he is so passionate about what he teaches. Just do the homework and enjoy the amazing readings. There is lots of reading but its good reading!! Definitely take this class! He is such a smart guy and has a funny sense of humor. Tests are difficult if you don't take good note
Do not take a class from him unless you know absolutely everything there is to know about church history. He gives tons and tons of busy work hw and then tests you on ridiculously minute points from LDS hist. "During which visit of the angel Moroni did he encourage JS to marry?" No joke, that was a question.
This man loves church history! you can tell! but more than that he loves name dropping! teaches "only facts" which are his opinions. I went to the church history museum just to find out that a lot of what he taught was FALSE. lots of reading, very ridiculous tests, huge curve though. i averaged maybe 55% on the tests and still got an A....
Very absorbed with church history. Not accurate with the facts he teaches. His tests are absurd. He asks obscure questions about things he doesn't really cover. Annoying sense of humor.
The tests are ridiculous. However, there are only three, including the final, and he allows retakes. The rest of the work in this class is fair and not overly difficult. Brother Baugh is an incredibly kind and helpful man--he'll work with you if you're struggling. Just go talk to him. A really wonderful guy.
I should've listened to these comments! I took the class and ended up withdrawing from the class (never withdrawn before). His lectures are great and he is definitely passionate about the subject, but the time one has to spend to do decently in the class is not worth it!!!
Prof. Baugh was a sweet, kind man but boy, his class was rough. I have never studied so hard for a religion class at BYU. It was ridiculous! He gave no study guides and wouldn't let us see his powerpoints to study. If you want to get an A, DON'T plan on it, even with hours and hours of homework a week
Wow What a great class!!! Brother Baugh really knows his stuff!! He knows his church history inside and out!! His tests are hard but he grades on a CURVE so you can get an A! He was extremely helpful too!!
Hands down the hardest class I had last semester! The exams are intensely hard and he provides no study guide, nor does he post his powerpoints on blackboard. He sets himself up as an example of "righteous living," I mean he has a powerpoint slide listing all the callings in the church he has had. EVERY SINGLE ONE.
Brother Baugh gives STUDY GUIDES which I love!!! If you miss any questions on a test he'll let you re-take it and improve your grade. I was so impressed by how much he knows! Great class!!!
I think that BYU is previledged to have a teacher like Brother Baugh. He has so much knowledge about the subjects that he teaches that sometimes it's too much to take in. He really tries to get to know the students and to engage with them during class. He has a great sense of humor, too.
worst religion class EVER! nothing to study from for his exams that take 7 hours to complete. curves since highest grade is 60... useless information. don't take it from him.
Great guy, frustrating professor. Tests on obscure things, what HE believes to be true, sometimes contradicting church statements.Tests are very frustrating even though they were open book! TWO quizzes before each class. Excessive.Spends tons of time talking about trips to church history sites, then skips important spiritual things. Misses the point.
Professor Baugh was nice, but full of himself. The class was more of an outlet for him to talk about his travels and his current research projects rather than the scriptures. He expects you to take copious notes and doesn't post slides on blackboard to study from. Most points are from attendance and writing assignments, but the tests are very hard.
BEST. PROFESSOR. AT. BYU. He knows so much about church history and is so excited about it that it made me excited too. Tests are a bit difficult if you don't go to class, but if you pay attention and take really good notes on what he says then this class is an easy A. Open book tests!
This proffesor is crazy. He is super prideful and will always be willing to tell you of his vast amounts of knowledge and his world travels for the church, yet he cannot give you answers that suffice for scripture. He simply states opinions and has no regard for student viewpoints. His tests take too long and have HUGE curves because of hardness
TAKE ANY CLASS THAT HE TEACHES!:D:D:D Brother Baugh is an awesome teacher. I've had him for two years now and I have really enjoy his classes. He covers a lot of material in class. I love his teaching style. Brother Baugh is hilarious and I am always anxious to go to class. The coursework is pretty easy too!
Brother Baugh is amazing. His tests take a large chunk of time and there's a lot of reading, but none of it feels useless. I learned a TON both from his lectures and the things we read. Tests are tricky, but open-book and graded on a curve. Easy A if you just put in a couple hours per week.
AMAZING teacher!!! Take this class!! You learn so much about Joseph Smith and Prof Baugh has so much knowledge. He is great and never pushy about his knowledge. The tests are open book and kind of hard but there is always a huge curve. I loved this class!!!!!
Definitely my favorite class I have taken at BYU. He is the best teacher and is so knowledgable and inspiring!! Not to mention he is very light-hearted and funny. You can tell he has a passion for what he teaches. I can honestly say I got teary eyed at the end of the semester. TAKE A CLASS FROM BROTHER BAUGH!!! You will NOT regret it.
This class damaged my testimony more than any other class at BYU. I was relieved to find out later that most of the issues came from false doctrine he was teaching (such as Christian rock being of the Devil). Tests were, as mentioned by others, overly hard and focused on meaningless facts. Avoid, avoid, avoid this professor...
Brother Baugh is the greatest! His lessons are very interesting and you can tell he has such a love for Joseph Smith and the Restoration. If you take good notes and spend extra time on the tests, you'll do just fine. If you ever get a chance to take his class, definitely do it. This class has strengthened my testimony of the prophet.
Brother Baugh is a sweet gentleman and is very passionate about what he teaches. However, his tests are ridiculously hard, even though they are open book and open note. Very nit picky. Never knew which material he wanted us to focus on or write down, both with class notes and on article readings. No study guides.
This class is an absolute waste of time. I tried justifying his bad scores on here but he honestly is an awful teacher. He teaches from his own knowledge and meaningless facts about D&C. The majority of his test questions aren't even in the scriptures but his own book he helped write. Do NOT take this class!
This was the worst experience of my life in academia. His questions aren't about the books. Example question I'll remember for the rest of my days: What did Emma say on her death bed? Why was this class about trivia, I have no idea. He talks about material like he's the creator.
This class was the best class I've taken at BYU. My testimony of Joseph Smith has grown because of Brother Baugh's love for the prophet. You learn so much of what you need to know about Joseph Smith from the rights source - Brother Baugh has an amazing wealth of knowledge. Tests are tough, but if you take great notes in class, you should get an A.
THIS WAS THE BEST CLASS I'VE TAKEN AT BYU! I learned so much from the lectures and my testimony was strengthened. Brother Baugh really knows his stuff. The tests are incredibly hard, but it's open note, open book. TAKE GOOD NOTES and do the reading assignments. I would take any class from Brother Baugh
Brother Baugh is an incredible man. He knows EVERYTHING about Joseph Smith and the beginning of the church. However, his tests are tough. Super tough. They are open book, open note, but the questions are "which one of these is NOT...." and all the answers are nearly identical. Write down EVERYTHING HE SAYS. Textbook is provided. 20 points for att
This is not a class that focuses on the cultural lifestyle and the subtext to the revelations and actions of the prophet. His tests feel more like trivia questions that you'd never get from any other professor and are super difficult. If you don't write down absolutely everything he says in class, you won't get 100%. Huge curves for the tests.
Super hard exams even though they're open book/notes. Lots of info in lecture, take good notes or you're dead. Some lectures were interesting, others not so much. More focus on history rather than doctrine, which is fair for this class. If you're looking for doctrine, take it from another professor or a D&C class. Final project is a piece of cake.
Difficult tests, but incredibly knowledgeable. He cares about what he teaches and has a great testimony.
I loved the class. I could see why some people might not appreciate the work that goes into a class on the Restoration, but if you want to be a gospel scholar. This is a class you MUST take. There is a lot to take in, but it is not unreasonable and everything I did in the class was enjoyable and worth it. Be warned though. The tests are a beast.
An amazing teacher. He really strengthened my testimony a lot. He's a great guy that cares a lot for his students. There was quite a bit of reading, but most of it is pretty interesting. Tests are difficult, but he curves each test so that helps out a lot. Take good notes. I would definitely take a class from Brother Baugh again.
This class was the hardest religion class I have ever taken at BYU. Tons of reading each week and the 2 quizzes each week that are tricky. Tests are over 100 questions and took me 3 hours and I still failed. The tests are ridiculous and this class did not help me grow spiritually at all. It was way to focused on unimportant facts.
Very smart, and a good teacher. His tests are completely based on lecture though, so you need to show up every time and take notes on everything he says
Brother Baugh is a very sweet guy, but this was one of the worst classes I've ever taken. Everything you're graded on is just reading and memorization of facts. Tests are open note, but the only way you're getting a decent grade on tests is if you copy the entire textbook. Zero discussion and analysis of church history, just pointless facts.
I love Brother Baugh! He gives very interesting lectures. ZHe knows his stuff! He also encourages participation and really gets to know everyone. Tough tests but grades on the curve.
I loved Prof. Baugh. This class is pretty difficult because of the amount of reading involved and the difficulty of tests and quizzes, but there is a huge curve that makes up for it. I loved his lectures and the knowledge he shared with us. I wouldn't recommend this class to those who don't have a basic understanding of the restoration. It's deep.
The most interesting and amazing class I have taken. Professor Baugh knows his stuff and teaches along with the spirit. Just as every class, do the readings and you will do well in this class. The tests are hard but they are open note so go to class and take good notes and you will get an A. Learned so much.
I love Brother Baugh. You can tell he is super passionate about what he teaches. The tests are very specific and rely heavily on specific things said during lecture.
Pretty easy class as far as a religion class goes. One small assignment a week plus one paper at the end of the course. The exams are wicked hard even if you go to class and take notes but they are not weighted the most. Overall, pretty easy class but I was not spiritually enlightened at all.
Bro. Baugh is an awesome guy. He's got a strong and powerful testimony. You get a lot of points for just going to class everyday and completing the video assignments. The tests are incredibly difficult, open-note but based on random facts from all different sources. This class is manageable, just inconvenient.
Professor Baugh is incredible!! He is SO knowledgeable, kind, respectful, caring, and just all-around an amazing guy. He put in the effort to get to know as many of his students as he could, and his lectures were super interesting and funny. This class did have a LOT of reading - but if you're passionate about church history, you will love it.
Professor Baugh could work as a very easy teacher, but his relaxed way of teaching in class combined with the intense workload and tests is kinda shocking. "None of you are going to get a 100% on the midterm, just do your best", is a sign that he kinda just throws in tests and assignments because he has to without proper preparation.
You learn so much about church history. As a First Semester freshman, it was hard, but it is easy if you focus and go to class. Midterm and final tests are curved with an easy PowerPoint presentation. At the start of every class, reading and video notes are due (stay on top of the work). Brother Baugh is awesome, ask questions! Testimony grown!
Brother Baugh is a really friendly guy, he remembers names, his lectures are interesting. It's just that there's a lot of reading, then you get to the exam and it's the most random stuff. The high scores are usually below 90 just because so much of what's on the test is material that was not discussed in class or mentioned in the textbook.
You'll read a ton (as usual for religion classes), you'll write only one or two essays in the entire semester and midterm and final are open book, notes, church website, etc. He's super nice and knowledgeable, it's impressive how much he knows and the details he can go into in any topic. He grades on very simple tasks like reading and attendance.
Excellent lecturer. Reasonably high expectations, but compassionate if a student suffers true personal difficulty.
Brother Baugh is incredibly passionate about church history and truly cares about his students. I'm not the biggest history buff but I loved this class purely because of him. There are weekly readings and videos but both are super easy. Tests are open note, book and video.
Brother Baugh is THE MAN! By far the best religion professor and class. Class really is not that hard. If you want a chill religion class that strengthens your testimony this is the guy to do it with.
