Semi helpful in class. Teaches straight from the book, so great teacher to take if you aren't intimidated by math, especially since the material covered is easy. Test questions were much easier than the homework, and he never checked the homework.
This man teaches straight out of the book so if you read your math book from time to time then you should be okay. The test are definitely difficult at times so make sure you really study ahead of time.
Not very easy to understand. Read your book, its better.
Dr. Blokh is a very good teacher. He is very understanding and helpful at the same time. If you are good in math then you are fine and can come out the class with a A OR B but if you suck and hate to listen then DO NOT TAKE HIM! I loved him!
Dr. Blokh was a good teacher. He does have an accent, but it's not like you can't understand him. If you don't understand something, he goes exactly by the book, which explains everything you need to know. He grades fair. I'm no math whiz and still came out with an A because i put in some effort.
He grades overly fair. But in class I just was not following him until I went home, did the homework and taught myself. He is also a very nice man. I got a B.
Great professor. Loves to his students. His tests are very easy and gives lots of partial credit. He is easy and is a great teacher.
Great teacher! Extremely fair to the students. His tests are very representative of material covered. Cares about his students.
Dr. Blokh is a very fair and nice teacher but you need to get a tutor to understand the material before the tests.
Dr. Blokh was a great math professor. He has an accent, but it is easy to understand. I would definately take him. Makes math, a normally boring subject fun!
In my opinion, Dr. Blokh was not a very good teacher. His teaching methods are not very clear. He teaches directly out of the book and the book is not helpful at all. At some point, he told us that he's not going to talk, he's just going to write on the board.
I had to drop this class because he is hard to understand due to the accent and he was also unwilling to help. I failed the first test miserably and he refused to give me a chance for extra credit or anything. Do not take him unless you have a tutor who will better explain the material!
His teaching sucks...and he isn't helpful. Do not take him...he will not help you at all and tends to make you feel like you're an idiot when asking a question. He doesn't go over questions from each chapt just the examples at the start. When asked about hw ques, he didn't know it & said "you suppose to know not my problem but yours".
I've never had a teacher as rude as this man. He comes in complaining about no one making good on tests, then lectures about not wanting to do a complete math prob cause it takes too long. GO FIGURE. This man should NOT be teaching!!!!!!!!! AVOID at all costs.
Avoid at all costs! I've never felt comfortable asking questions. Doesn't go over some things and says that's your fault. I've taken this class before and many other classes, but have never came across someone like this professor. Do not take him.
I can't tell if Dr. Blokh is a bad teacher or if all his students are just stupid (probably a little of both). A good portion of the class dropped because they couldn't pass. He has a heavy accent, but great fluency and VERY EASY to understand. He seemed to try really hard to teach his students. Despite that, we all hated the class. Poor guy.
Uses the textbook examples in class. I can read them myself at home. Find out when the exams are and stay at home to study. You are better off to just teach yourself. He also acts indifferent to students.
Not good
He has an accent, but he's understandable. Tests are 10 questions, 5 for 5 pts all or nothing. The rest, 15 pts with partial credit. He is nice & tries to be helpful & clarify things. HW problems are a must for the POP quizzes and tests. 4 tests, about 12 HW assignments, and about 7 quizzes. Take class only if good in math or able to go to Math Lab
Tests are very difficult. Homework program is not helpful (ThomsonNow). Professor is very difficult to understand and responds negatively to questions. Oftentimes acts as though the class is stupid. Despite studying, using the MLL, and having a personal tutor, my test grades were frequently Cs-Fs. Overall, this is an awful class.
This Guy is extremey hard to understand! I dont think he likes to many questions. When he does answer questions, he answers as if all questions are stupid questions! Basically dont take him unless you are a math wiz!
This professor is a mathmatician - not a teacher
He is not a very pleasant teacher at all. Treats the class like we are doing something wrong for not understanding the material. Answering questions seems like a burden on him. Tests are short and hard. The computer homework is not good practice and difficult because you have to put in the answer EXACTLY and you'll miss the problem for somethingdum
VERY HARD! It's hard to understand what he is saying due to his accent. I had to drop his class!
Really hard to understand. Doesnt do a good job explaining. Teaches like your already soppose to know it as well as he does himself
Not a good teacher at all. Horrible at explaining thing and not helpful.
He tries really hard to be helpful. He just doesn't have a gift for teaching. This is the only class I have ever dropped.
This is probably the most accurate rating on this site: I go to class, do the homework online and bring any questions to the professor. He's always glad to help both in class and out, and he goes over an almost identical test (the one his class took last semester) the day before your test. He's from Ukraine, but he's very easily understood.
Awesome Professor.
Dr. Blokh is a very nice man, don't get the wrong impression about him. It is a little difficult to understand him, but the workload is very fair and he will help you outside of class. He is also VERY generous with partial credit on tests! The online homework and quizzes are also very helpful!
He's very nice and I have nothing against him, but I regret choosing his class. He's just very ineffective as an instructor
Professor Blokh is obviously a brilliant guy, but he has difficulty explaining the material on a level the students can understand. I took Calculus in high school, so this class was not too terrible, but if I didn't have a background in the subject I would NOT have done well. Probably wouldn't recommend him as a professor.
He is a very good professor. His accent and writing is different but one can easily overcome it. He is extremely helpful too and ALWAYS eager to help you with your problem. He wants to explain the whole concept of your question so you understand it fully and make a better grade.
Easy class if you have had calculus before. He teaches mainly proofs, but if you have had calculus before he gives enough examples to refresh your memory. I wouldnt reccomend him if it is your first experience with calculus
I wouldn't recommend Dr. Blokh for MA 125. He spends more time teaching the reasoning behind WHY, than actually how to do the problem itself. If this is your first calculus class, you will most likely fail. He is really nice, and loves try and help you, but Dr. Blokh is a mathematician, not a teacher. He should not teach this intoductory course.
He is a very helpful and approachable teacher that always welcomed questions. I'll admit, though, that I learned the majority of the material from watching calculus videos on YouTube than his explanations. Like some1 stated, he puts greater emphasis on the reasoning behind the answer than just how to solve it. BUT IS VERY GENEROUS WITH TESTS!
He is only professor that recommended that the student seek other avenues when the first test grade was not passing. His exact words were to "seek other advice!" I would not recommend him but I will say that if you can teach yourself, then take the class.
Dr. Blokh is an excellent professor, who is always more than willing to help his students.
Dr. B was an awesome professor. I did very well on his tests throughout the whole semester. However, I took AP Calculus senior year of high school, so I already had a lot of background on the information. I think people who didn't already know at least the basics of calculus didn't do well, as Dr. B teaches very fast. He is a pretty lenient grader.
Professor Blokh was a pretty ok math professor as they come at UAB. I've heard of horror stories about the other math professors so I was blessed to have Blokh. He made himself available whenever the students needed him and even had extra final exam study sessions! He has a unique sense of humor and an accent that takes getting used to.
Incredibly helpful. He really seems to truly care about his students, and will do more than the average teacher would to help you. That being said, his lectures are hard to follow unless you read the text book prior to class.
Dr. Blokh was great, it's clear he truly wants his students to do well. He is very enthusiastic when approached outside of class and even scheduled additional review sessions before some of the tests and the final. You may have to read the book some andor watch a few youtube videos to supplement his lectures, but that was fine by me.
It is crucial to attend class everyday and ask questions if you do not understand a concept. Hard class, so make sure to read the book ahead of time. He really tries to make sure you understand all of the material, not just lecture on and on. He even held extra review sessions for the final exam. Plus, his humor makes the class much more bearable!
Professor Blokh is a funny person who is very interested in helping you to succeed but ONLY if you put in the effort too. The key is that you have to put in the effort. In MA 126, I found it helpful to bring the book to follow along with his lecture. He's a lenient grader, which is why I chose to take him again for Calc 2, and I wasn't disappointed
This man right here is the epitome of amazing math teachers at UAB. You know what, I haven't had a single good math teacher here until I had him. This dude understands that understanding something in math takes time and he will go over it if you ask him to. He's caring and enjoys cracking jokes. He has an accent, but it's easy to understand.
Calculus at UAB is difficult, but Blokh is a great professor. He has an accent but for the most part is easy to understand. He reviews before each test and encourages questions. He also works through past tests and sends them to you. He might seem intimidating at first, but he is actually pretty funny and really wants to see his students succeed.
He does have an accent so be forewarned. He is a great person, but if you do not have a good calculus foundation back away slowly. This class works best if you have the jist of the material first.
Probably my favorite professor at this university. He cares and wants you to pass, you've just got to try. This a not an easy class, but it gets easier if you participate in class and use everything he teaches you. Take advantage of the mock tests and the fact that he's willing to help you out outside of class. He's a fair grader.
I didn't care about math so much before taking his class, but as far as caring for students, he is second to none. I am now considering the possibility of going for a math major. Gives good feedback and lenient with tests.
BEST PROF IVE EVER HAD! HES CARING AND GIVES SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT FOR JUST ATTEMPTING A PROBLEM! YES YOU NEED TO COME TO CLASS BUT ITS CAL, YOU CANT EXPECT IT TO BE A BREEZE FIRST TIME. HES FUNNY AND WANTS TO HELP ANY WAY HE CAN. BEST MATH PROF HERE AND ME AND MY FRIEND TAKE HIM WHENEVER WE CAN!
he was the best teacher ever, he cared, he gave so many chances to get an A it wasn't even funny
Great professor that really cares about his students! Breaks down Calculus in a way that is easy to understand. He is super kind and he really puts in the extra effort that helps students succeed.
Blokh is truly an amazing person. If you take the time to learn the material, the tests are super easy. I especially recommend him if you've taken AP Cal in high school. Super nice guy, take him if you can!!! Oh, he grades leniently as well.
Calculus is tough but Dr. Blokh actually tries to make it manageable. There is homework online but he makes it all available at the beginning of the semester and allows you to complete at your own pace throughout the semester. The test are tough but he goes over them thoroughly afterwards. Attendance is part of grade, so try to come to class.
Dr. Blokh is the best teacher I have ever met. He has Russian accent. However his English is very clear and perfectly understandable. There is a lot of humor and inspiration in his lectures. He is very responsible. He gave extra review session. He is generous in grading. If you sort out the basic algebra and spend 10 hour/week, A is easy!
Tests are hard but after each one he will give a quiz of two problems from the test and give you back 1/3 of the points you missed. He does all he can to help you out. You do have to present homework problems but most of the time even if you get the wrong answer he gives you points for presenting. I only had to present twice all semester.
Nice guy and a good teacher
I really struggled with the class because of Dr. Blokh's strong accent and how he doesn't always answer questions in the classroom setting. I encourage you to go to office hours, get tutoring, and stay on top of everything. If you've taken calculus before, it'll be a breeze, if not, it'll be tough. However, he is about the best UAB has for MA125.
Alexander Blokh is the best, so awesome!! He does have an accent, but it's not hard to understand and it makes him fun to listen to. I would encourage you to sit near the front of the class. I had never taken any calculus before this class and it wasn't a problem. He cares about you understanding the math! If at all possible, take his class!
Lectures go fast and so does the material. His teaching style is confusing at times but manageable. Tests can be easy if you take practice exams and you bring a good notecard. Gives points back on exams so he gives you the opportunity to get a good grade. Textbook heavy but online code has e-textbook.
He makes Calc more enjoyable but his class is still incredibly challenging. I took his class Mon-Thurs but I wouldn't recommend taking it 4 times a week. He's the sweetest man but his lectures can get pretty boring. He genuinely cares about making sure you understand the material though and has the best personality.
He gives every chance for his students to pass. After every test, he gave a quiz to get 1/3 of the points missed on the test back. He gives 3-5 worked out practice tests before every test, and goes over them the few classes before the test. At the end of the semester, he said if you make an A on the final, you will get an A in the class. Great prof
Not necessarily the most outstanding teacher, but a very good person. That alone makes it easy to get an A in his class. Sit towards the front and participate every once in a while and he will love you. His test bank is almost identical to the tests he gives, so practice them. Plus a notecard in tests, extra credit, and test corrections EASY A
This professor is a great choice. He has a heavy accent but you will get used to it as time goes along. He really encourages students to learn and study the material. He breaks things down elementary style. He dedicates 3 or 4 classes before a test to strictly review time. He is a lenient grader and he lets you earn back points w/ quizzes.
Dr. Blokh is the sweetest man. He is funny and very good at what he does. He was so eager to make sure you understand the material. He has slight accent but no big deal.
Professor Blokh was a great math teacher overall, however, I could not learn from him and had to get a tutor. He does not know how to teach even though he's a genius. I took this course over the summer and there were 3 tests, 2 pop quizzes, easy homework. and one final. After each test, there was a 2 question quiz to help boost our test grade.
I didn't enjoy his class or his teaching style and had to get tutored through it. Very heavy accent and hard to hear since he speaks so softly. But he gave a lot of opportunities for points. Use the test bank, notecard, and a graphing calculator and you'll pass. I didn't find class that helpful and just worked problems, but he gives pop quizzes.
His class can be more theoretical then actual numerical examples which can be confusing, but if you study previous practice tests, you should be fine. He was actually pretty funny.
All of the past tests can be found on UAB's calculus test bank, and on top of that he gives you a chance to get a third of the points you missed on the test back! Very forgiving grader, and a great teacher, making for a valuable class that you won't have to worry about, especially if you've taken calc in high school
Professor Blokh takes one of the most boring subjects around and makes it actually enjoyable. He is very easy to understand and will work with you if you do not understand a concept. He is a very easy grader and wants to see each student succeed and leave the class with a greater understanding of calculus.
Dr. Blokh is by far the best and easiest choice for Cal 1. You get graded on attendance so come to class & there is a lot of online hw but its pretty easy. But he will randomly call on you in class though! There's 4 exams plus a final, but he offers recovery quizzes to gain lost points back and he emails out old tests/answer keys before each test.
He really knows how to break down Calculus in ways thats easy to understand, and he's very open with his review sessions about what will be on the tests. He does enjoy participation from his students, but he's very willing to help! If he was teaching Calculus 2 I would definitely take him again!
I wouldnt recommend taking Blokh if youre not going to take the class seriously. Hes difficult to understand, and I didnt see how the homework related to what we were learning at all. Maybe its because this class was mainly online because of COVID, but I didnt get anything out of this class except for stress and a lower GPA.
Dr. Blokh is extremely intelligent maybe too intelligent to teach calculus to undergraduate students. He teaches with theories mostly and its hard to follow. If youve never had calculus before he ready to get someone else to teach you calculus. Nothing is impossible without hard work! USE THE CALCULUS TEST BANK! You got this
I enjoyed taking Dr. Blokh's calc I class! If you haven't taken calc before, be prepared to study a lot. He gives opportunities to get 10 points back on tests by correcting a problem you missed on the exam. He is a good teacher (likely the best in the department), but the class is by no means a walk in the park. He loves students who participate!
I didn't go to class (attendance was optional bc of COVID) but I still got a 95. I just studied the old exams he posts bc they are the exact same format. He lets you gain 10 pts back on your exams too! He gives pop quizzes but they're pretty easy. You don't need to buy the textbook. HW is easy bc it gives you the answers after you attempt it once.
I LOVE PROFESSOR BLOKH! He is the kindest, most caring professor, but dont let it take away from the fact his class is HARD! You will definitely need to study hours a week. But the scale for Cal1 is a 75-87 for a B and 88-100 for an A. He also helps with giving points back on tests, which each count for 13% of your final grade. Kind but difficult.
Dr. Blokh is the sweetest math professor you can have at UAB in my opinion. Most of the grade for the class stems from exams so be ready to study a lot if your not familiar with Calculus. He's very generous with partial credit on these exams though and I believe that if you put effort in you can easily average at least a C. A 75 AVE is also a B.
This class is HARD. If you haven't taken calculus before, the beginning is very stressful bc Prof Blokh goes very fast. He does have an accent which can be hard to understand esp. with masks. The tests are your grade mainly, and he stopped giving back points on tests halfway thru the semester. Do the practice tests! They're exactly like the exams!
Blokh is a decent lecturer in my opinion. If this is your first time taking calculus, prepare to be a little overwhelmed. Put in the effort, show up to class and do the online homework and take notes during lecture. when it comes test time do the practice tests! The pop quizzes, however, are all or nothing so paying attention is important here
Dr. Blokh was somehow able to make a 2 hour cal class bearable. He is actually the nicest man ever and is pretty funny. You can really tell he cares about his students and will always make an effort to ensure you understand the concepts. The HW is helpful but all you have to do is pay attention in class and review the practice tests to get an a.
He is a honest guy and he is very fair. You will have to work very hard at this class if you want an A. I didnt come close to that but I respect the guy and it is your responsibility to do well in his class
Very knowledgeable about calculus and a good lecturer, but is at times pretty rude to students asking questions or for clarification. Said some hurtful things about our class when we did not perform well on an exam. Tests are mostly very similar to practice ones, so at least there's that. Felt really uncomfortable asking any questions.
Professor Blokh is a really nice guy, but if you aren't comfortable in math this may not be the class for you. There are online video lectures from another professor that were a lifesaver for me, but the lectures were sometimes hard to follow. He allows cheat sheets on tests which are really helpful and the quizzes are very similar to labs.
Professor Blokh is an amazing mathematician, and I'm sure that if I was a graduate level topology student I would get far more out of his lectures, but I am not. For Calc 1 he is fine, however you are going to want to supplement many things, as his lectures are far more conceptual than concrete.
he is a very nice guy but, was not very clear in his explanations. Would not recommend to anyone without prior calculus knowledge.
