I only took him because i had to. By far one of the worst professors i have ever had at Tulane. His test are insanely hard and he is very difficult to understand. Unless you have no life and nothing else to do but chemistry 7 hours a day, STAY AWAY from any class this man teaches!!!
one word "sucked"

really wants his students to LEARN
has open-book tests and quizzes!!!!!!
Very good teacher. Actually tries to show students how everything is supposed to be and works out problems and admits his mistakes. Maybe initially hard to understand him for some - but after a while you get used to him and pick up on his humor too.
great teacher. A chemistry professor that actually wants his students to learn. A rare find at tulane.
Best Chemistry teacher at Tulane, seriously. He has only open book test and quizes and the equations on his tests are almost the same as whats in his notes. He also gives more extra credit chances than anyone can handle. You know you have a good teacher when the un-curved class average is a B.
His accent may be hard to understand at first, but he makes sure you understand and gives extra credit opportunities. His tests are relevant to what the class covered and are always open book b/c he wants you to learnt the stuff, not mememorize it. He loves it when you come in for extra help too.
He is a really funny teacher who clearly explains everything; however his accent is tough at times. He is very helpful and loves students coming to his office.
He's so helpful and really cares is you understand. He makes chemistry interesting! His tests are open book and notebook so the tests aren't bad at all
This is your best bet when it comes to chemistry.
i hated him. his notes made no sense and his accent was horrible. although his tests are open book and notes, it really doesn't help since the majority of his questions come from his****ty lectures. although its not like there are any better options when it comes to chem...
Dr.Burin is very helpful, and really want He nothing but to see his students do well. His accent seems to be his only problem, though it is not difficult to understand if you listen attentively.
His accent is not too bad and he can laugh at the English mistakes he makes. Only gave a couple tests and a couple quizzes, none of which were very far removed from the sample problems. Do the problems he assigns and you'll be fine, but don't expect the lectures to be very helpful. Takes attendance, but only for records, not grades.
Dr. Burin is one of the nicest teachers that i've had here; once you get used to his accent the lectures are fairly straightforward; expect to rely on the book to learn a lot of the material though. However, definitely your best bet for general chem.
Burin is the funniest and nicest for sure. probably your best bet. the others semmed to have sucked way more. All test and quizes are open note/book/ect. Be prepared to teach yourself tho. his accent is extremely hard to understand. its very easy to put of work and screw yourself over. Chem is really difficult but this is probably your best bet
Very easy class. Dr. Burin seems very intelligent but he is difficult to understand and doesn't explain things. He reads off his powerpoints and does problems on the board. He is a nice man and wants his students to get good grades and to come in for help. Everything was open book/open note. Learn the practice problems.
There's a very big difference between being smart and knowing material and being able to teach it to others. He was not very good at the teaching component. Attending class seemed pointless on most days. He was a very nice guy who meant well, he just had a very hard time keeping our attention and more importantly teaching us chemistry!
Great guy, funny, but not so great at teaching. Accent is pretty tough to understand. Go to his office hours and he'll work with you until you get it.
Though his tests are open-book, open-note, do NOT get complacent. He asks ridiculously hard questions that he has never taught in class. Plus, it's nearly impossible to decipher what he is saying. Take only if you have a thorough understanding of chemistry.
prof burin is a nice guy, but a confusing chemistry professor. tests are open book and note, but ridiculously hard. if you do have him go to class, it helps, as well as the review sessions
Quiz candidates are given prior to, though he may change some of the numbers. Tests were difficult and the final was madness. I don't know anyone that wasn't completely thrown off. Went in with about 98%, came out with a B. Beware quantum mechanics! His expertise, but he won't fill you in on the secret behind it all.
everything open book/open notes but honestly only helps on the first test.. after that either ya kno it or ya don't. i would have been royally screwed in this class without previous knowledge bc this man is crazy and an awful teacher. he may know chem but he can't teach it to others.
I took intro chem from him. His accent is a bit difficult to understand at times, and the powerpoints were not that great at all. Tests were open-book but still difficult. He holds tutoring sessions that are helpful.
Prof. Burin means well, and is certainly a great Chemist, but he is hopeless as a professor. His TA's (thankfully) tend to clear things up when exams roll around, preventing those without prior Chemistry knowledge from utterly failing. I give some credit to him for honestly trying.
The preceding reviews are not very fair IMO. Chem is inherently challenging; that's not the profs fault- you need study hard for a good grade. While he can be a bit confusing at times, overall he's a great prof and a really nice guy! Very fair, too-graders can be arbitrary but he'll override unfair point deductions. Highly recommended! :)
Professor Burin is a nice guy who means well. He's not the best teacher, but he is very fair. Though his tests are open book, they are still hard, and i almost always ran out of time. Overall, i found him kinda funny, not the best professor, but definitely not the worst. If you study independently, you will do well.
Uggh, to this day, I entreat people to avoid gen chem insofar as Burin's associated with it. It's been said: Burin's a nice guy, but he has no business teaching a 100 level course. And he realizes it, compensating with the 'open book' clause with his tests.
I don't know if Burin has changed his style of tests/teaching, but he's SO EASY. I don't know what these people in the comments are talking about. If you're really having trouble in the class, READ THE BOOK. Burin can be unclear at times, but if you do all the problems he assigns and read the book for some clarifications, you should be golden.
Nice guy who tries to be funny. His english isn't horrible, but takes a little time to get used to. Classes can be drab and he can be confusing at times. Reading the textbook will clear up most of your answers. Tests are either really easy or really challenging, but there is always a curve. Compared to the other chem teachers, he isn't too bad.
Great guy, awful teacher
The averages are as follows: First midterm: 86.2%. Second midterm 70.14%. Third midterm 52.5%. The first two tests were beyond belief easy. The last midterm was the most brutal one by far. Study Chapter 8 like there is no tomorrow. It was about quantum mechanics which is Burin's expertise. I highly recommend taking Burin!
Review sessions were useless. He was not at all approachable in office hours. TA's give almost no partial credit. Sample problems do not the reflect test at all. The test averages might make it look easy, but with z-scoring most grades drop significantly. Open-book tests teach you to compile notes - I don't think I've learned anything.
He's pretty good compared with the other, and I would take one of his classes again. He always came prepared to class, notes were always up, and he LOVES it when you ask questions. Really wants everyone do well. Good Job, Burin.
Burin presents information without providing any explanations. There are no explanations as to why things happen. Read the book for clarifications. Tests are open note, but don't ever rely on your JUST your notes. That was the biggest mistake so many people made. First two tests are easy, last one madness. Final was ok
Got a C in Chem 1 with Burin, and an A in Chem 2. Do NOT take Burin. Lectures are useless; he doesn't even make his own tests or his final. He's a horrible teacher. He's primarily physicists, which explains his inaptitude for teaching anything other than quantum mechanics. Take anyone else.
Burin is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. However, all of his quizzes and tests are open note, therefore pretty easy.
He is seriously the worst teacher I've ever had, but in terms of tests, they're REALLY easy. The tests and quizzes (+ the final) are all open note and straight from his practice problems (though, don't trust his solutions). If you want an easy grader and can learn chem on your own (or use the success center!) take him. **Get someone to sign you in
Although he is a very good guy and means well, Dr. Burin is a bit hard to understand and even though his tests/quizzes are open note, they're pretty difficult. I learned most of the material through hours of studying the textbook rather than from his lectures.
Really nice guy, terrible teacher. Avg of final exam was about 50%. Z scores final grades. Would highly recommend trying to take another chem professor. Burin is too smart to be teaching a general chemistry class.
He wants students to succeed. I recommend going to the TA supplemental sections. Most of his quiz and test problems come from practice problems online, although half the answers he posts are wrong. He gives a generous z-score. Everyone does poorly on final, but it's curved quite a lot. I got a 61 on the final and wound up with an A- in the course.
Dr. Burin is a great professor. He really wants his students to succeed and will do anything he can to help a student understand the material better. If you have questions, do NOT be afraid to ask. If you want to succeed but haven't taken Chem, you can. Go to the TA sessions, go to office hours and do the assigned questions.
Really nice guy, terrible teacher. Everything is open note which is nice but you don't learn anything. TA sessions are helpful, but not enough. Final average was around a 49%
Dr. Burin is really smart and although his English is not the best he is still clear while teaching. I went into the class only having taken 10th grade regular chem and the class prepared me for chem 2 and above. His tests are hard but you can do well if you use TAs and Burin himself. I think the only way to do poorly is to not come to class.
Burin is a nice guy, but his English is awful. The lectures are random and if you haven't read that entire chapter b4 class, you will be puzzled. We have only had 4 grades, 5 including the final, so be ready to be stressed b4 each one bc they are so crucial. He's clearly very smart, just can't really articulate his words into constructive material
Dr. Burin is a very nice guy. His accent is sometimes a barrier, but often it is not a problem. His wording on practice problems and test questions is difficult due to the language barrier. His tests are HARD and he doesn't teach in a cohesive, easy to understand manner. The TA sessions help. Only take this class if you have a lot of free time.
Caring professor with thick Russian accent. Tells funny stories in lecture and his tests are difficult. Great at making time for students during office hours, but not great at explaining concepts during lecture.
Burin really wants you to do well. He's a nice person. The problem is, he can't teach. He's a quantum mechanics guy- he should really just be researching, NOT teaching freshmen chemistry. Half of his solutions are wrong, and I learned pretty much everything from the student instructor and tutoring center.
As stated before, Burin is a great person but a poor teacher. Chem was straight forward enough that I could teach myself from the textbook but the lectures and long and confusing.
Dr. Burin was definitely the worst professor I have ever had. We only had 2 tests all semester. The final took the whole 4 hours allotted and with 15 minutes left he told everyone that sometimes his questions are impossible to answer. So basically his tests mess with your mind and don't have enough information. AVOID AT ALL COSTS !!!
He strives to be helpful during office hours and was extremely accessible whenever those hours did not work for students. However, he is simply too smart to be teaching this course. Watch four the second midterm- physics is his specialty so he makes it very difficult. He ended up curving the entire class to a B- average. Would avoid if possible
Dr. Burin is a very nice and caring person. He's extremely knowledgable and knows what he's talking about, but I feel like he's too smart to be teaching general chem. He's not good at explaining concepts and I was lost the entire semester. The tests were also ridiculous.
For the love of god do not take Burin. While he is entertaining at times half the questions on the tests have nothing to do with chemistry. Really smart guy but I don't think he understands that freshmen in Gen Chem don't know anything about quantum mechanics. The class average on tests was less than a 50.
We had two tests and a quiz all semester and the final was worth 50% of our final grade. He curved the average to a B but this class ruined my life for a few months. Especially should not take if you actually need chemistry for your major because you may learn negative things from this class.
Burin is a physcist who Tulane stuck teaching gen chem. He's very knowledgable about quantum mechanics, but doesn't always have a good grasp on other gen chem concepts. If you need to LEARN chem don't take his class. His curving is also not representative, and his tests are pretty confusing. He's not the worst, but avoid taking him if you can.
Do not take Burin unless it is your last resort. His exams are the hardest things ever and even with hours of studying you never know what to expect on them. I basically taught myself gen chem 1 that semester. Majority of my friends and I ended up with Cs or low Bs in the class. Awful foundation if you go on w/ chem, so it made gen chem 2 hard also
Professor Burin tries his hardest to be caring but his class is very confusing. You can pass the class by really studying your textbook. The tests are extremely scaled.
I didn't learn much general chemistry, but I think my Russian interpreting skills have improved by eons!!
Depending on what you're trying to get out of Thermodynamics (Pchem 2) he is the guy to take it with. Your entire grade is 2 quizzes, 2 tests and 1 final which are all electronic take home tests that can be done within a 3-4 day window. If you have a group of people that are smart, you can easily solve the problems and do well. Class is pointless
My biggest issue w Dr Burin was his exams. I studied for 2 weeks straight to prep for an exam and got a 41%. Sometimes I really wonder if he knows chem. He'll have wrong answers on practice probs and not realize. He would get answers wrong doing practice probs and say he intentionally did it wrong so we could catch it, this was an entry level class
Avoid him!
Burin is such a nice guy, but he is the worst teacher I have ever had, period. Your entire grade in this course is based off of 5 things, a small introductory quiz, 3 exams and the final. These exams are riddled with typos and incorrect answers. He is very unclear and there are often times when there are questions on tests that we didnt learn. no
Burin is not a chem professor. His Russian accent is thick and hard to understand with a mask. Technologically challenged. Answers questions like it is just that way idk what to tell you thats how u do it. Exams have so many mistakes you dont know your grade for a week while he fixes all of his mistakes. Just read the book im sure its better
Please do not take Burin if you have the chance. My whole class relied on our GroupMe and our SI like our lives depended on it. He is a funny dude and our class had a lot of great laughs, but between his weird grading, frequent wrong test question/ answers, and just reading off the slides, it was a roughhh semester. Tests are open note though
Don't get me wrong... gen chem 1 is a tough course. That being said, Professor Burin does his best to make the material manageable and does not make any of his exams extremely complicated. As long as you follow the textbook and do a lot of practice problems for each chapter, you should be good to go. Best option for gen chem at tulane!
Quizzes/exams online with all-or-nothing grading - no chance for partial credit. Very nice man, but not such a great prof
Tests/quizzes have no partial credit. You're just entering a number into a canvas textbox or answering multiple choice, so it is all or nothing. However, his assigned practice problems heavily resemble the actual exam. He goes over how to solve problems in class and holds review sessions which he will answer all of the practice problems if needed
DO NOT TAKE
he's a very nice guy but he makes the class so hard for no reason. i literally have no clue what's going on and I go to every class... would not recommend, find another professor.
He is literally the nicest guy on the planet, and is soo excited when students come to office hours because he genuinely cares and wants to have a good relationship with his students. Unfortunately, he is much more a physicist than a chem prof which makes entry level chem classes exceedingly difficult.
Professor Burin is a sweet and understanding guy. But, his tests are nothing on what he teaches, and I have attended every lecture. He gives us a large practice test exam, although it very often doesn't even have the types of questions we are tested on, on his tests. He only has 5 test grades and a final that will determine your whole grade. Beware
This man is not great at explaining concepts but he is very kind and enthusiastic about Chem. Also his tests are all online and open note so that's a bonus. You should go to SI sessions since the practice problems done there and in class are normally on the tests.
Professor Burin is a very intelligent and passionate instructor. He is very nice and wants you to succeed. He is not the best at teaching the lower level classes, so if you didn't take AP in high school it will likely be very difficult.
-Online and Open note tests -SI will be your best friend -Lectures are very long and can be boring but generally offers some insight that will help on tests -Extremely caring professor and is generally a nice man -Not an easy class without taking AP Chem in HS -Overall, I would recommend Professor Burin's class
the exams were only online, but they were a bit tough. If you study the practice problems, go to office hours, and attend SI sessions, you will be fine. The curve also will make up for everything as long as you are around or above the class average.
Look, the chem department is not great and he's no exception. He talks so slowly that you can barely stay awake and the work on the board is a mess. The quizzes are so different from the sample problems most of the time and he makes them more difficult than they need to be. Zoom recordings are helpful though because 2x speed.
not very clear on expectations for what types of problems are on tests. online and open note which is a bonus, but it still isn't vert helpful for his problems.
I felt he made the material harder to understand than it needed to be. We had no homework assignments. The only grades were quizzes and tests. Though, the curve helps your grade a lot.
Great lecturer for Quantum Mechanics. Learned a ton and made things relevant to modern research as opposed to just learning theory. The homework was all reasonable, and no tests at all was a nice touch.
Super cool and funny guy. He understands that chemistry can be confusing to some and is very open to questions and will often tell silly jokes to lighten up the mood. The quizzes are all online and open note which is very nice.
Kind of hard to understand at times, but posts all lecture slides so you can go back and review!! All midterms are "quizzes" and are online and open note so thats also nice.
Prof. Burin is a very caring and wholesome teacher. He really understands how difficult the material is and constantly encourages us to ask questions and send him emails. Overall, he cares for his students and wants you to learn, if you put in effort you should be good.
He was very funny and caring towards all students. Nicest Teacher ever, only hard to understand material if you don't go to lectures and ask questions if confused. All tests online and open note. Would love to take him again.
Such a kind man who understands the material is difficult. He can be hard to reach via email and sometimes does derivatives of equations during class that you don't need to know which can be confusing. Open note online quizzes and literally the funniest jokes in class. I recommend doing practice from the textbook even though there's no homework.
Sometimes hard to follow, but very open to answering student questions, going at student pace, and making sure we understand. Only quizes comprise the grade. No homework, but studying is recommended.
TESTS ARE OPEN NOTE AND ONLINE!!! lectures are super uninteresting and he does a terrible job explaining things. if you took ap chemistry in high school this class is a breeze
Very very sweet guy, funny, but not the best at teaching lower level classes. All tests are open note and online, so it is easy but you do not learn anything. Often messes up in the lectures, but is a very understanding guy who honestly wants you to succeed.
Professor Burin is a really nice guy, and he cares about his lectures and students. However, he has a long way to go towards being an effective teacher. The only grades are the quizzes and final which are all at home and open everything. If you want to actually learn chemistry, probably take a different professor.
Super sweet guy, absolutely impossible to understand half of what he's saying. All I can say is have your SI on speed dial. Quizzes are all open note and take home and final is heavily curved. If your grade is lower than you think it should be, email him, because chances are the graders messed it up and you actually got a lot of stuff right.
Dr. Burin is a kind man but he's not teaching General Chemistry 1010. The exams and quizzes and lectures do not follow the text book. He takes a physical chemistry direction in teaching which as a freshman is unlearned material. A lot of derivatives. I have taken both AP Chem and Honors Chem and got a A and have failed his quizzes. DO NOT TAKE.
Assessments were online with no partial credit and a very small margin of error. You could get the answer almost exactly right and still fail. Very little grace. But he is a caring professor and provided extra credit when we asked.
Burin was okay, I had a good grade in his class until the final, which was very chapter 6/7 heavy. He did not follow the syllabus and was not very consistent. However, he is VERY accessible and is super kind and caring and wants you to do well. Though, you can tell he is meant to teach higher level courses, not gen chem 1.
Burin is a lovely guy and always answered his email. However, I didn't learn much from his lectures, I had to teach it all to myself. Open note quizzes but answers had such a small margin of error that you could get the answer right and still be marked wrong. If there is another option for 1070, take it.
He is nice and all but oh em gee he cannot teach. I feel like I didn't retain any information from his lectures.
If you can help it, please don't take him. Entirely too test-heavy and doesn't teach in the least bit.
Burin is a great person and very humorous in class. All quizzes and tests are online and open notes however they are still very difficult and I scraped by with a B. Did not set me up well for chem 2 because I did not learn anything from his class.
If you want to cry and crash out 24/7 take Burin. You will literally have to teach yourself all the material bc he speeds through all the slides. All exams are open note and online, but they're harder than the lessons and he gives no partial credit. Averages were Ds for the exams. Good luck…
Terrible teacher, he only cares about his research. He made his own practice tests but the test would have the wrong answers. Instructions on tests were never clear, content on tests not covered in lecture or on slides. Took him forever to respond to emails.
