Charming and silly, Professor Coward is the Hugh Grant of math teachers. He wasn't a bad teacher, but he wasn't the greatest either. Sometimes he's a bit hard to understand, and he'll sometimes use British math terms, but you'll get used to it. I don't love math, but his personality made the lectures enjoyable.
He is a very bad teacher, his lectures are boring. He sometimes say jokes, however half of them are lame. He is obviously unexperienced with the american system of teaching, he grades on the curve, highest 10% A, 20% following the A's get B, the lower 40% get C and 30% get D and F. His midterm is very hard and worth 25% and the final worth 75%.Bad!
He's not a bad teacher, but is sometimes hard to understand because he's from Britain. His curves aren't that bad. I basically failed the midterm. (Got a 55%) He grades it so that if you do better on your final, it will count for 75% of your grade and 25% for the midterm. If not, then its 50/50. Don't need to go to class. Just self-study.
Not a bad professor. He isn't crystal clear all the time and tends to use British math terms though. Midterm and Final are the only two tests. If you do better on the final, he weighs it 75/25. Curves are hard to understand though. No set # on the curve for the tests. BTW: by the end of class his back is all sweaty. It's pretty funny.
At first, he made MANY mistakes in his teachings and seemed as if he didn't know the subject matter. He did get better as the quarter progressed. He was a very nice and quirky guy, but not the greatest professor. Maybe he'll get better as he teaches more. Also, his practice exams are nothing like the real ones. So do the suggested homework.
Not very good professor, but very funny and charming. I enjoyed the class, but didn't learn much.
A teacher you want to avoid!!! unless you have taken calculus before, do not expect to learn anything. He has a British accent...so if you have problems with accents, do not get this teacher!!! Practice midterms/finals do not help you at all. His office hours do not help...minus well go to another tutoring place.
I suggest you have a background in Calculus before taking his class. (I took Calc AB in high school). On the first day of class he told us that everything we'd need to know was from the lectures, so I went to every one of them. I didn't do the hw, but I studied with the practice exams and more. The first practice exam wasn't very helpful though...
he is charming and seems easygoing but beware! he is decieving! his practice midterm exam was supereasy and then the midterm was torture.! his whole grading is based on one midterm and one final! rely on the book its your only saviour. hes not a good teacher, although he knows the material, he cant teach it.
He is easy compared to other DE professors. I learned a lot in this class. The class might seem intimidating at first, but over time you'll realize that this is too easy to be true. Dr. Coward is a great teacher and i would strongly recommend taking him if you are going to take mat22B
omg...he's the easiest teacher ever...the materials that he covers are mostly basic stuff comparing to other teachers (such as Marx)...His tests were so straight forward and easy..mostly come from lecture notes... (however...he takes off hella points for little mistakes..so just be careful).Other than that you should take him if you want an easy A
funny British humor. very nice professor. go to tutor and his office hour if there is question. But attend lectures you should be set because he ( like the rest of math professors) wrote everything on the board. do practice problems. that's how you get to know calculus. no exception.
This guy ROCKS at teaching 22B. Ignore the whiny freshmen who took him for MAT 16. Very clear and funny lecturer, and makes sure students understand what is presented in class. Exams are straightforward, he tells you what to expect beforehand. Homework didn't always line up with what he taught in class, but he only tests on what he covers in class.
Best professor i've had at Davis so far. A wonderful teacher, who can actually EXPLAIN things when asked for clarification.
Great professor! Makes lecture enjoyable with jokes, and British accent. He makes it very clear what he expects of you for midterms and finals, by providing study guides which are similar to the tests. I don't know how you could not like him. Strongly Recommended.
This guy is super nice and super helpful! His study guides and practice problems are very similar to the tests... His office hours are just great. Theres no question between who to take. To put into prospective, I didn't really go to class and i went to his office hours let him know i didn't go to class and he taught me everything!
Coward is an amazing professor! If you go to class and pay attention and ask questions when you need to, you WILL succeed in this class. Not only that, but it is FAIR. The practice exams are super similar to the actual exams (unlike many other classes). takehimtakehimtakehimtakehim.
Honestly, my favorite professor of the entire year. Enthusiastic, extremely helpful, held extra office hours and pre-midterm study groups with excellent one-on-one attention. Lectures were very easy to follow and very helpful! Strong recommendation.
He went well out of his way to make sure that people who struggled towards the beginning of the class got back on track and did well for the rest of the course. Highly recommended professor with a great arsenal of jokes.
Best PROFESSOR at Davis, period. I had been struggling with math my first two quarters, but he made 16B very clear and easy for me!He's funny and oh so charming! If you have the chance you should take it with him! :)
This is a professor who truly cares about his students. Does a great job of making the subject material easy to understand. He is hilarious and keeps the class interesting. Would suggest him for any student who has struggled with math before
You really learn a lot in this class, lectures are mandatory and he covers everything that will be on midterms and final. Write your notes clearly since he cares about how you write your answers. Also he makes you laugh in class, and he let's people ask questions in class. And he doesn't go too fast
Great teacher. Probably the most clear calculus teacher I have ever had. If you go to class and pay attention you WILL get an A in the course and feel like you have actually learned something. It also doesn't hurt that he's funny and tries to keep you engaged in class!
Professor Coward was a great teacher. He is the best professor I have had at Davis so far. He keeps class interesting with his jokes and he always made sure that everyone understood the concepts. He always asks us to raise our hands if we don't understand anything, and he will go over it again. Very patient, funny and kind. Great professor
I thought he was kidding the first time I heard him talk. He´s a very intelligent guy who teaches to the exact level necessary for the course. Some math technicalities were thankfully swept under the rug. There are no surprises on the tests. Make sure to go to the review session for the final and attend class before the midterms at the very least.
he was very clear and helpful. always made sure the majority of the class understood the material before moving on(don't be afraid to ask questions or say that you don't understand the material)i'd say go to class. but what i liked is that the tests directly followed what was taught in class-there were no surprises.definitely consider him for calc!
GREAT professor! hated calculus before and he has made it enjoyable to me. his jokes made class go by smoothly. always willing to clarify any misunderstandings. tells you what's expected of you on the tests. he really wants you to do well in the class! RECOMMENDED!!
The class I enjoyed & looked forward going to.Prof. Coward made class interesting & easy to learn.I had been struggling with math up 'til I took this course. He assigns very little homework(hw) if any at all, but he does such a good job explaining in class, hw is not needed. If you can TAKE THIS CLASS!PS-usually fall asleep in my classes.Never did he
This is probably the best teacher i've had in Davis! I'm NOT a math person at all but he totally changed that! He's clear at explaining things and REALLY cares that ALL of students understand the concepts. He is also really funny! MUST TAKE HIM FOR MATH!!!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Best teacher I had this quarter. British accent, pretty funny. Super nice guy, very approachable. Awesome at explaining stuff. Tells you right up front what he expects of the class, study guides similar to tests. Keeps class entertained with a joke every once in a while, but overall amazing professor!!!
He is the best math professor I've had. He explains all of the material very well and teaches us in ways that are not confusing like other math professors. He makes sure that a majority of the class understands the material before moving on and as long as you do the steps as he does, you will do well in the class. Great teacher with good jokes!
Professor Coward was Awesome! Even though there was no homework, everyone in the class understood exactly what he taught. There were no surprises on the tests, and we had time to get through everything we needed to. I ended the class having a great grasp of everything he taught. He was funny and entertaining too!
I had struggled up to this point w/ Calc but with his explanations it became very clear WHY and HOW we do calc. I can't recommend him enough. You MUST attend lecture and pay attention. He doesn't use the book which is a good thing (the book is awful) . What was once a blur is now crystal clear and in the end I don't hate math anymore!
Great professor! Explains material very clearly unlike other math professors. He makes learning calc fun and tells great jokes! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Teacher was very straight forward and good at relating to the students. Overall a very good professor
This class is recommended for anyone that want to learn math and have fun learning it.
He's funny, breaks down math to very simple terms, has funny jokes, extremely passionate, and inspiring! Barely any homework and you still learn a lot. He actually made me interested in math again!!
Great at explaining calculus concepts! the guys is super funny and creates a really nice teaching atmosphere. One of the few classes I actually wanted to go to lecture this qtr. Take him if you can oh and he's great in office hours
Good professor. Makes it very clear what is expected of you. His study guide closely follow the structure of the tests. Keeps class entertained with good sense of humor. Truly cares whether all of his students learn the material or not.
good professor. engages with the class and is patient with his students. really approachable person
Amazing professor. He is beyond helpful and his tests are super easy as long as you do the review sheets!
Very good professor. For those who are struggling in calc, I highly recommend him because he is very thorough with his lectures. I took AP calc in high school so there wasn't anything new for me and the class relatively easy. His best quality is that he doesn't assume you already know the calc terms so your not overwhelmed or lost in the beginning
Easily the best professor ive had so far!
Awesome teacher. Lectures are always purposeful and straight forward. There are no surprises in the class. He is available to help if needed. Very willing to explain anything that needs further explanations. All in all, best math teacher I have ever had.
Great teacher. Fantastic style of teaching. Very straight forward. You will walk away actually learning something in math. Never a dull moment. By far the best math teacher I have had yet!
One of the BEST teachers I have ever had at Davis. Super freaking amazing. He made calculus so easy. The class was always entertaining. Not one of those teachers who drags on and makes class dull. Definitely would take another course with him. Made me love math again.
Such a fun class! It is so easy to understand. Funny teacher!
Awesome Professor!!! I actually learned calculus in his class. Very clear and straight-forward. Highly recommended!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!! Super intelligent and funny, always telling great jokes. Cares greatly about his students! Lectures are always crystal clear, and he truly wants everyone to understand the material. The class itself is SUPER easy with a little studying, as his midterms and final exams are nearly mirror images of the problems on the practices.
Best math teacher I have ever had. I loved his teaching style and learned a lot! He takes the time to explain concepts so you can really understand what you are doing and it makes sense. He is a very nice guy who truly cares about his students. Take his class!
Coward was the best professor i've ever had in anything. He teaches everything so clearly and always goes slow enough to make sure you understand and don't fall behind. I would rarely miss a lecture because he obviously loves what he does and actually cares for his students. and he has an adorable english accent. favorite teacher of all time
Awesome teacher! I LOVED his class. He is so funny and charming, really makes his students feel comfortable enough to ask questions and like he actually cares. His explanations are crystal clear. I took calculus with another professor prior and failed it, but passed this class with a B+ :D
Fantastic professor! Makes material crystal clear, and super easy to understand! Midterms and finals are exact mirror images of practice midterms, so no textbook use needed at all! VERY nice guy, has an awesome British accent, and tells hilarious jokes. Truly cares for his students. I'd recommend him over any other professor I've ever had!! :)
One of the best teachers I've ever had at Davis. He wants everyone to do well and does a great job preparing you for his exams.
GREAT math teachers. One of the best I've had. If you've never taken Math 16B TAKE COWARD! He explains everything in a way that's understandable. He cares about what his students say and makes class interesting. There is really no homework and the tests are EASY, meaning you can pass the class.
Besides the fact that he has an awesome accent, that had me intrigued, he is the best teacher that I have ever had in Davis. He says there are no surprises on the test and there are literally NO SURPRISES. What ever he goes over in lecture is what's on the test. I understand math more than ever. I used to hate math before i took his class. :)
Prof Coward was really an awesome teacher. After barely passing 16A, I was pretty worried about how I would do in 16B but it surprisingly became my easy class for the quarter. At first I thought that since he was so funny and entertaining, that he couldn't possibly also be a good professor but he definitely proved me wrong!
One of the best teachers I have had at Davis so far! He is hilarious, explains math clearly, cares about the opinions of his students, and overall is a very nice guy! He wants every student to pass but is fair at the same time. Take him if you get a chance! Expect to be entertained and learn a lot at the same time! :)
Very clear in all his instructions. When he says there will be no surprises on any of his exams he means it. Class was actually enjoyable, which really is something since it's a calculus course. Recommended greatly. Wish he would teach 16C.
Take him.
one of the best math teachers I had! =P
Prof. Coward has been by far one of my best professors here in Davis. This class isn't easy but with him teaching it, it's a piece of cake. Unlike other profs. he cares that about the students and goes out of his way until everyone understands the material his teaching. He's hilarious, class goes by so fast!He started Oxford at the age of 16!
Professor Coward is absolutely amazing! I struggled in math before, but Prof Coward cleared things up for me! He makes math so easy to understand. He is straight forward on his tests (doesn't try to trick you like other math teachers), entertaining, kind, and very understanding. You would be missing out if you don't choose to take him.
Prof. Coward is such a great teacher in math. He is by far my favorite teacher here at UC Davis. He is the reason why I started to love Math again. His homework are not easy but very helpful. We didn't have to do his homework because he doesn't checks them, but doing them helps you get a good grade in his class. At least that is how it worked for m
Great teacher, super clear about what will be on the test. Always makes sure the class is following along with what he is saying. Overall awesome teacher.
Take Him!! He is such a wonderful Professor, I looked forward to coming to class everyday and his explanations are far more better than the book! He cares so much about his students. I wish there were more professors like him.
excellent teacher...makes math easy!
He's jokes are the best and going to math class everyday is much easier with Alexander Coward!
I am a third year and this is hands down the best teacher I have ever had. He teaches clearly and keeps the class interesting with his humorous personality. Everyone should enroll in this class. Sir Alex is a boss
He covers what the book fails to explain. He will walk chair to chair to make sure you can solve the problem yourself, and he wants you to understand the stuff, not just plugging into formulas. Best.Professor.Ever.
The best math professor I ever had. His midterms and finals are just like his practice exams. If you understand and memorize the answer key, you would do VERY well in his class. He keeps the class fun by telling jokes every once in a while. He is a very fun and approachable guy. Take his class if you can, you will not regret it.
Most likely one of the best professors I will have. Professor Coward actually made math a fun class to attend. He successfully taught the material that we needed to learn and had a great sense of humor. The practice tests really prepared you for the midterms and final.
Great teacher!!! I love his sense of humor and his jokes! He makes math really fun, helps you understand the material, and is really organized. His accent is so hot and he has dimples like Cheryl Cole! He's really cute! The best teacher at Davis by far! =)
Best teacher at Davis!! He is funny, easy to follow, and truly cares about the students. Take him, he's by far the best. I wish he was teaching math 16C :(
Professor Coward is one of the best math teachers I have had in UCD. He went out of his way to make sure that no student was left behind, he always encouraged questions and clarified every question until the students understood the material. He is also a funny person that livens up the classroom with jokes. Coward is overall a great professor.
Professor Coward made calculus a lot of fun. He did a great job at addressing any issues the class had. He demonstrated a teaching style that would make learning much easier if it were more commonly used. You'll have a great time and learn a lot.
funniest teacher ever! Professor Coward makes the class fun to learn. He uses his humor to teach, making the class much more interesting than just simply math. His tests are straight forward. As long as you go to class and pay attention, you should pass the class.
Prof. Coward is really the best!! Its obvious that he is loved! But seriously he really knows how to teach and cares about the success of ALL his students. He is naturally a funny person. And i will truly miss him as my math teacher. HIS GREAT!!!
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD!!! It is rare that a brilliant mathematician can communicate concepts effectively, but Professor Coward is great at teaching to students who aren't necessarily math oriented. He clearly cares for all students. Shame on UC for not retaining such a great professor. Any University would be lucky to have him.
The best math teacher I have ever had! Always willing to help with any issues you may have. Very clear about what he wants his Students to know for exams and in general. Make sure to go to office hours because they are quite fun. He has great jokes, is a very nice guy, and has a sick British accent. I highly recommend him as a teacher for any math.
I'm pretty good at Math but Professor Coward made the learning process exciting & seamless. The biggest bonus is he never surprised us with new material that we had not covered thoroughly!
Professor Coward is, by far, the best math teacher that I have ever had. He is very clear, organized, and straightforward with all of the class material. He accomplished the impossible by making calculus fun and easy for me to learn!
Professor Coward is, by far, the best math teacher that I have ever had. He is very clear, organized, and straightforward with all of the class material. He's accomplished the impossible by making calculus fun and easy to learn!
Professor Coward is an amazing math professor. It was a joy to go to class every day, especially after the bad experience I had with Mat 16A. He is helpful and genuinely cares about each and every one of his students. He wants everyone to succeed. I recommend taking this class, it will make you like calculus. I really wish he was teaching Mat 16C!!
Prof. Coward was a fun, easy-going guy who genuinely seemed to care about his students and the subject material. He explained things very well and did not move on until he was sure everyone understood what he was talking about. His little jokes he made periodically helped to keep your attention and somehow made math seem not so bad. Recommended.
Coward was like no other math teacher I've ever had. He actually wanted to teach you the clear and easy route rather than the confusing and difficult route to do math. He made it very clear what he expected you to learn, and what you would be tested on. I wish every teacher was that direct.
You will not regret taking this man's class. He is simply a great professor.
Professor Coward is the best.Never took calculus in high school, only took it now to fulfill my major.Really surprised when I showed up the 1st day &he was a cute guy with a british accent! Tells jokes& makes class really funny. His teaching style really works, always answers questions.Tests easy b/c he makes sure you know how to do the problems prio
Amazing teacher, very funny, always willing to explain anything confusing, very liberal with homework, tests are easy and understandable.
A very good professor. Teaches with a good personality and a smart technique proving he knows his stuff.
My only Rate for UC Davis thus far, Professor Coward is the best teacher I've had here yet. He's a professor, but actually TEACHES and wants to make sure everyone understands the material. Go to lecture and pay attention and there's no reason you shouldn't do extremely well.
Like everyone else in my class, I adored this guy. I felt well prepared for every exam and actually retained what what taught. I'm MUCH more confident in my mathematical ability as a result of his teaching. I never thought calculus would be my favorite class, but he made it so crystal clear and highly entertaining that I never wanted to miss it.
Very engaging professor. knows his material well and make sure his students comprehend, rather than just spewing material just for the heck of it. Definitely the best math teacher I have had thus far
He's the best math teacher i have ever seen. The reason is he really want his students to learn and to understand the materials, not just following the text book. His notes are really useful. If I will take any math class again. He is my first choice. He's also very energetic! He's cool~!
An awesome teacher!!! that is all I have to say.
He is a great professor that really tries to keep you interested. He tells jokes, takes breaks from learning hard material to make real world connections. He has a british accent which is awesome especially when he tells jokes. Homework is at a minimum and he is available for help anyone, anytime. =]
The best professor I've had at Davis in two years. He really is an amazing teacher, is funny and interesting, and wants to pass every student in the class. I did less well on the second midterm than the first and he emailed me asking if everything was going okay. Highly recommended.
He's a really cool professor who, although can goof off in class a bit gets the job done and make time fly. I go to his classes half to hear his jokes and half to hear his lectures. He's also really helpful in office hours if you don't get something.
One of the more theatrical calculus professors, he made 50 minute lectures seem like 10 minute lectures (bad or good thing). However, lectures were not always the most clear but he was aware of his mistakes. He made sure you knew the material through practice, practice, and more practice. Great professor and a great person.
Easy professor, doesn't seem like he prepares for lectures very well, very funny during lectures. Tests are extremely easy, gives practice midterms and finals and the real ones have the exact same problems, just slightly different numbers.
Very entertaining lectures. He has an awesome British accent and tells a lot of random funny jokes. Easy tests, just do the practice tests and you should be able to get a good grade. Gotta love his lenient grading scale. Take him if you can!
The smartest people in the world take difficult and complex ideas that they cannot completely understand and relate them to simpler ideas until they do understand them. Coward is a master at this and I never thought I would fully understand flux or circulation, but now I do =D
Absolutely loved this class! I was really afraid of 21D and all the three dimensional nonsense but Coward breaks it down really well and keeps lectures interesting. The practice midterms are literally the exact same as the midterms so anyone that failed the midterms clearly didn't study. I got a 98 on all 3 tests. Soooo easy
Very good teacher. Easiest class I ever took in davis. Recommended :)
Funny as hell. He's British. Enjoyed lectures. No homework, and the exams were cake. His practice exams are his real exams, just with different constants. Would recommend in a heartbeat.
Best math professor I've had. Likes proofs and the tests are a bit hard.
Entertaining in class. Lots of proofs and not an easy grader.
Not an easy grader in terms of how precise he wants things (Tip:ALWAYS remember periods) Overall very good professor. Explains things well and is very entertaining.
He's crazy smart and a hilarious lecturer but he's very math-centric in that if you don't understand something he probably won't be able to put it into different words. You can tell he's been really smart his whole life, which is kind of annoying. Also he doesn't release any kind of grading scale so it's impossible to calculate your grade as you go
HE'S A NONO.
Is beloved by students, but seems to care much more about how students view him than how much he teaches them about math. Yes, he's quotable and sent a viral e-mail at one point, but I didn't want to get up for his class three times a week for motivational quotes and movie trailers of "The Blob" (though ultimately, I did just that).
He is a great lecturer, makes the class fun most of the time. Has some great stories and is inspirational. Don't let him fool you though, he may seem easy and friendly but when the tests come around you better have studied. Especially the final. Don't feel too comfortable just because he doesn't care about homework and he seems cool.
Overall an entusiastic lecturer, but I felt as if there was not enough material covered as necessary. Many topics were glossed over and the class was extremely proof intensive.
Coward is a great lecturer, but I found his lectures to often not go in great depth in the material and to contain many tangents. Many students would attend OH, and he would be very patient and helpful. He genuinely wants his students to succeed. He did not assign any homework, which sometimes made it difficult to know what to focus on in studying.
i like having the know how to read articles and having discussions with people i know
