He is the only teacher who uses a different textbook. And his quiz questions aren't anything like the ones in the book. And he uses the phrase "right..right...right..." far too much. Pick another prof! (I would suggest Lu)
Nice, Brilliant man. Maybe not a suited prof for entry level stats courses though. Grades were done on a relative scale and since half the class cheated on the quizzes it made actually studying to compete useless. Lectures were boring at best.
A class that was alright to attend but you spent your time wondering if he'd say "right" more than fifty times a lecture rather than the material, i suggest Chen,
BRUTAL, BRUTAL, BRUTAL. After the "little pink book on love" and the stats corrections in it, I didn't go to class ever again. Quizzes are easy, can cheat, no prob. Midterm-failed. Final- aced!!!
He is an excellent professor!
Anyone who complains about de Leon is a complete moron who shouldn't even be going to university. He has the easiest Stats class that ever existed. His notes are so thorough and easy to understand you don't need a text. Before every exam he gives you practice quizzes to work on and for the real test, all he does is change a few numbers. Easy A.
.....
never thought a prof could say "right" over 300 times in 1 75 min lecture, i was wrong.
Brutal course in general. Learned nothing after spending way too much time and effort getting 30% on midterms. Midterms nothing like exercise sheets... Final grading was fair though.
horrible class.. he goes on and on with the phase "righ?" .
It's a little horrifying to be called on by name to spontaneously answer questions. But you need that. He's one of the best profs out there. He pushes you to really learn, and not just get by, which is what usually happens and isn't education at all. And he's pretty funny, too.
WORST PROF EVER.. you get bored by how many times he says RIGHT"..and the final and midterms were almost COMPLETE spinoffs of people who took the course a semester before..thus, everyone just cheated and the curve was totally inaccurate..since when was an 85% in stats a B-?..also very rude,if asked a question he would accuse u of not going to class
This guy is a dick, plain and simple. The sad thing is, that he has the potential to be good: he has good resources and informative lectures. But abandon all hope. He is and always be a dick.
BEST statistic professor! If you're a student who really want to learn, Dr. de Leon is the one!
Despite everyone elses comments, I liked him alot... I fell alseep a few times in class but it was really early. His midterm was easy, he gave us a practice final and the final was almost the same. Always asked if we had questions and knew peoples names. Seemed to care if we did well.
Tough prof but I believe he cares about his students and their acheivements. He pushes everybody to learn the material and he wants us to be successful. A little scary when he calls on you in class but that has helped me a lot since I dont like to participate in the lectures. An okay guy, he helped me a lot when I didnt understand something.
hardest prof at u of c
On a personal level, Alex is a great guy. Unfortunately, that is his only bright spot. His teaching style is absolutely horrible. He uses powerpoint throughout the entire course, does nothing but read the slides and I dont remember him doing a single example on the overhead or whiteboard. He makes a rather easy course into a really difficult one.
good prof, great notes
One of the best stat profs in the department. The quizzes and midterm were right off the assignments and from class examples, so very straightforward. Had lots of office hours for answering questions, was very helpful to me. His calling on people in class didn't bother me. Didn't like multiple choice final though.
I enjoyed taking STATS with him. He seemed to genuinely care about the success of his students and is clearly knowledgeable in the field. He seems more concerned about the practical applications of statistics and a little less about the math. Didn't like the PowerPoint lectures and multiple choice exams. High grading curve too.
De Leon is a very good prof to take this class through. He posts all his lectures on the internet so its no big deal if u miss a class. The quizes he gives out are pretty easy. Also always do the practise exams he posts...out of the 40 questions on the final i had seen about 25 of them before. A helpful prof too, if u have a question he will answer
Fairly easy class, he gives you all you need to get a good grade. Lectures cover all material tested on and are always posted. Make sure you do the pratices quizzes and exams, they give a pretty good clue as to what is going to be asked.
Super funny. Notes all posted on blackboard. Try a little and you will get a good mark!
Awesome Prof!!
great guy, super funny.
Decent professor, powerpoint presentation not the most effective way to learn course material, and difficult to understand at times. Exams are fair, the more effort you put in, the better your results. As a person, Alex is funny and entertaining, as a professor, he is a bit of a scatterbrain!
Prof Leon is the MAN. There isnt a dull moment in class, were either learning hard or laughing hard. He keeps us entertained and makes statistics fun. He cares alot about his students and teaches what is going to be on the exam providing you also do the textbook exercises and come to class. His class was by far the most interesting in my first year
De Leon is a nice guy.. hes the first prof i've had that actually tried to learn students names. Hes funny and he makes class interesting. Although he posts all of his lectures so class is not mandiory. Dont buy the text book its not worth 130 for the amount of time you use it. Quizes are easy, midterm was easy, Final was quite a bit harder.
Quizzes are very similar to the sample quiz he posted on blackboard. Midterm is quite easy too. The final is not hard as long as you do some studying
He's a real nice guy.Very helpful and teaches with a lot of enthusiasm. He presents the boring course in a very good manner.Only problem is that his grade scale is way too high, for instance an 85 is a B grade which is quiet shocking for a Stat course which is just an elective. That feeling will make you feel pressured throughout the course.
He cannot teach. During class, he only clicks through his power point slides, which doesnt help for calculation questions. His tests are super easy though. Very similar to the practice ones he posts up. If you are good at studying on your own with notes, and have a somewhat decent TA, then take it with him.
He is REALLY FUNNY. One of my favorite profs this semester because he was hilarious! The only draw backs were his grade scale is unfair and he calls on people in class (but usually it's really simple questions). Quizzes are very similar to the practice ones. Midterm was REALLY EASY. Final was harder, but fair.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had. He keeps repeating "Don't copy, just listen!" and gets mad at you if you copy down what he writes on the board. He writes on the board behind the overhead screen and then pulls down the overhead so you can't copy what he wrote. He was rude in his office. Avoid at all costs.
Really funny and entertaining guy, made the class a lot less boring to go to. Sometimes he can be a little unclear when teaching his concepts, but that is all made up for by the fact his quizzes are exactly like his practice tests. Midterm was made extremely easy too, final was harder but still nothing to complain about. I would take him again.
It's interesting to see all the STAT 213 ratings saying he's an easy professor. Having taken STAT 421 with him, I absolutely disagree. He likes to call on people, which is okay, but if you don't know the answer he won't leave it alone. His assignments were pretty good, but his midterm was just so ridiculous. I think the class avg was ~12%
He was OK. He likes to call on people randomly in class, esp. if he knows your name. Overall not a bad prof, but I have to admit I learnt more from the textbook then from him. Lab TA was useless! His tests and exams are very similar to practice exams, definately do them. You can rent minitab from www.minitab.com under academics tab if u need it.
AVOID! Alexander de Leon SUCKS at explaining things! And he calls on people all the time, and when you don't know the answer, he doesn't let it slip. He makes stupid jokes that he thinks are funny and rambles on about useless things
You dont even have to attend any of his lectures to pass. Everything he does is off the slides, and not to mention he's an awful lecturer.
Overall an average teacher, sometimes a little confusing but if you keep up with the work its easier to understand. Print out lectures before class because he flips through slides way to quickly to take notes.
He was incredibly organized, neat, and as thorough as he could be. His knowledge and passion for the subject is evident. He applies examples that all of the faculties who have to take this course as a mandatory prerequisite will eventually have to use. Wish he would be a little more polite.
His class SHOULD be easier than the other stats profs cause he teaches a fraction of the content he than the other ones, but his classes are so dry. He knows his stuff but cant communicate it. He likes to call on people and ask them the question repeatedly even if they dont know it.
Very dry lectures. Not necessary to show up for class as you won't be missing anything important. His grade scheme is terrible. It's not hard to pass, but it's difficult to get a decent grade without working hard.
You're best off skipping his lectures (he makes concepts more confusing, if anything) as he only reads his slide presentation aloud. Study the slides online and use his practice quizzes/exams on BB to learn. He is very helpful in the sense that he provides everything you need, but he is not a very good lecturer.
Good prof overall, nothing special either way.
I found his class not bad. He tries to teach in a way that you will understand the concepts better. I also found him very helpful if I had any questions. I found his final harder then the rest of the course.
Gave you all the notes on powerpoint slides and goes through all concepts thoroughly. Allowed you to ask questions and was very friendly. Final exam was harder compared to the midterm, but not much different if you studied for it.
Stats will be stats. Quizzes were the same as practice ones, midterm was easy, final not so much. As far as teaching the material goes he does pretty well.
Stat 213 seems very easy to understand but the exams can screw you big time. Most students including me have had to take this course twice! Alex is a better prof to take it with. Quizzes are super easy midterms are ok finals can either be brutal or super easy depending on the questions.
Assignments were group work and were marked fairly. It was his first time teaching this course. Final was slightly difficult.
I find the subject sooo boring but Alex is hilarious. He tells us his opinions on things as if they are fact. Like dark chocolate is the best kind and if you like other kinds then you are wrong. His assignments can be kind of tricky but exams are SUPER easy.
He's there for you when you need it after classes. He's super nice and funny, though he sometimes tells you about unnecessary things but that's what makes the class more interesting! His midterms are fairly easy, but the assignments could get tricky sometimes. He's very understanding when it comes to assignment deadlines and would extend if needed.
Well he was a pretty decent prof until we found out, 4 days before the final, that he failed to teach us a bunch of important concepts that we needed to know for the exam. He is very unorganized and there were a lot of errors on tests and assignments. Definitely a nice and funny guy but not someone I would recommend.
He did not cover all the material needed to take the final.
Really tough professor. NOT WILLING TO OFFER ANY HELPS to students. When you go ask him a question, he will ask you many questions back, if you fail to answer one quesiton, he will just say you are stupid or you hurt my feelings. Smile all the time at lecture but get mad very easy during the office hour. Worst prof ever.
Taking stats with this guy is WAY easier than other profs... he teaches concepts in easier ways than others and it may seem that he leaves material out but you will not be tested on it. Midterms are SUPER easy, assignments are slightly tougher, but overall good prof although his lectures are confusing just reading the slides could get you an A.
Worst prof I have had so far. In his lectures he teaches you the theory behind the problems but never actually explains how to do them. This makes tests very hard.. he is not good at answering questions especially during lectures and does not make himself available for students to ask him questions after class.
Funny guy overall, but he mostly teaches theory rather than how to actually do the work. I had to turn to the online textbook to do okay in his class. He also teaches slow and didn't finish teaching the course by the last class.
Lectures are based on theory and lack clear examples. Did not prepare the class well for the final and had to rush through the material at the end because he spent too much time on the first sections. Difficult to approach for help and is not very understanding of those students who need it. Midterms were reasonable.
Take stats with him if you wanna fail. He is such a bad stats prof. Lectures are really boring and confusing, I can tell you that I learned absolutely nothing by going to his lectures, it was such a waste of time. I do not recommend him at all.
While he seems enthusiastic when he's teaching, I don't recommend contacting him outside of class. Hard to approach for help. Doesn't seem overly invested in the class. He doesn't give the solutions to his assignments so it's hard to gauge if you are applying concepts correctly. He teaches with theory, which gets complicated and confusing.
Awful stats prof. Even though I attended the majority of the lectures, I had to teach myself the entire course as he lacked clear examples and his notes were awful. At the end of the term I attended a review session by a private company and we didn't even talk about MANY topics that were necessary to know for the final.
Avoid this Prof if at all possible, attended every lecture finished all assignments and i'm still having to teach myself half of this course 12 hours before the final. examples in class are irrelevant to the assignments and tests, doesn't give solutions for practice problems and gives rambling incoherent lectures.
Lectures were useless, he was passionate but I never knew what he was talking about. Had to teach the whole course to myself. His lectures were always after the material was due on assignments. Midterms were easy but he did not prepare us at all for the final.
He is not clear with his examples and they are not relevant to the labs or the assignments. He seems enthusiastic however he just reads off of slides, and he posts them on D2L.
Not good
honestly it has been the worst class i've taken to date. He has slides but they do not relate to any of the homework assignments or quizzes. He will rush slides when the end of the class is nearing, not giving a good enough explanation. Also has taught content on the midterm the day of the midterm. Constantly asks is it clear? No Alex, no its not
He isn't the best prof, though he is passionate and knowledgable, and will introduce real world examples and has a sense of humour. His intelligence prohibits communication - if you are naturally gifted in mathematics and statistics you will be fine. His work revolves around medicine, thus so are his examples. Can be perfect for the right student!
Lectures provided absolutely nothing in terms of useful content. I attended every single lecture, extended tutorial PASS and review session and can honestly say that the lectures hindered more than helped. obviously passionate but he's also rude. Super condescending doesn't admit when he's wrong. Makes students feel dumb for asking questions
HIS CLASSES ARE NOT WORTH GOING TO. Try to attend other lectures, as long as it's not his. He is passionate about statistics, but that passion does not carry into his abilities to teach. His notes are not up to par with other stat profs and he makes mistakes in slides/examples often enough to throw you off. He answers questions condescendingly.
He teaches off of powerpoint slides that are not helpful at all in understanding the concepts behind the course material. His material does not follow other profs and the homework assignments. Also he does not teach you how to use minicab, as you must figure this out on your own. It is highly recommended that you attend other lecture sections.
He reads off of slides rather than teaching the actual class. His slides are not clear and might be hard to understand. His examples are not as clear and not much to do with the assignments or midterms. He is not as approachable in or out of class. I would say take it with another prof.
Awful in ever facet imaginable. He should be ashamed
He reads off of slides and his examples are more related to medicine which is confusing at times and they have nothing to do with actual assignments or any of the exams. He is often times can be condescending and may come off rude to students if they ask questions so he really isnt that accessible outside of class. Take with another prof if you can
Its unfortunate that you cant avoid Professor de Leon if youre doing a stats/math degree because I would encourage every person to avoid him. Hes a nice guy, but an absolutely terrible prof. Hes ill prepared, bad at teaching and unprofessional. Had him a few times now and regret it every time.
Dr. De Leon was very generous and understanding. If you were struggling he was available to answer questions and if you gave the effort he was available to help. The circumstances of this semester were hard for Dr. De Leon but he did the best he could and supported students to the best of his abilities.
I mean I know the transition back to in-person was tough but he missed 2 weeks worth of classes so we didn't finish all the course content which was disappointing. For most of the classes, he missed we didn't even get an email explanation until hours later. Showed up late every day and went overtime almost every class. Decent instructor but RUDE.
Avoid at all costs. Man missed so many classes, couldn't answer much in class. When he did try to answer something it made it more confusing. We have two weeks remaining and I don't know my first midterm grade yet.
lectures and course design are not made by him. Took nearly 3 weeks to mark midterm with multiple promised dates that marks would be passed by missed. Claimed he did not want to teach the course and it shows.
Honestly, De Leon was a pretty good professor, I would just recommend having him in person rather than online since he was more motivated. He stayed after class to answer questions and made sure I understood the concepts rather than just doing a plug and chug. Different from 213, but he did put in the effort if you showed effort consistently.
There's no words to describe how this proffessor lacks, like he went MIA one time during midterm season an no on received marks for weeks so there was no way to know how you were doing on the course. Final exam marks took so long to get so even 2 weeks into the spring semester you had no idea how you even did in the course, too much uncertainty
Does not care for his students fail to answer emails or show interest in teaching his lecture. Was not competent to tell students when final grades would be out as deadline passed and no clarity or even update was given.
Worst Prof I have ever had by far. Not accessible at all. Did not actually teach any of the lectures just posted old videos. I'm not sure what he did at all really to teach this course. He was not available via email and marking for every test took forever. when the tests finally were marked a large majority of them were incorrectly marked.
This guy is absolutely incompetent, randomly doesn't show up, doesn't know his own password, can't send an email to the right class... AVOID!
The lectures and lecture slides were not ideal, and very overwhelming at times. However, he was more specific in office hours and very happy to help. The practice tests were extremely beneficial. Also a bit unorganized and everything felt chaotic. Overall, an ~interesting~ experience, but I do feel like I have a deeper understanding of statistics.
Avoid this professor. His notation is notoriously difficult to comprehend and he doesn't show up to class. Other professors in the department don't have very nice things to say about him either... take the class with someone else.
Absolutely horrendous. His lecture slide notation is very difficult to understand. He doesn't respond to emails. Extremely difficult assignments, you better have done very well on Stat 323. Told us to "stop taking notes and just listen" but his explanations are frantic. Teaches material as if we're PHD students. Just overall unlikable person. AVOID
Prof is very disorganized, did not cover all class material (80% due to running out of time), took a month to return midterm grade. Final project requires lots of R coding, but zero demonstrations or resources for it is given. Simple concepts are completely over complicated. Assignments have pages of explanation leading up to the actual question.
We didn't get to cover everything, but the materials were pretty interesting. He was very lenient with deadline so the problem sets weren't too bad to deal with. The slides were a bit jam packed but he did a good job of explaining everything that was going on in the slides. Overall, it was a good course.
lectures were pretty brutal, and lecture slides were extremely hard to read, but he is my bestie, and is so incredibly helpful when you go to him for help. never akip his office hours because he really does just want to help you do well
