The material covered in Philo 252 was very controversial so class was never boring. Feldt is a very funny, charming, laid back professor. He will help you any way he can to help you make a good grade. BUT he doesn't hand out A's, and the papers in the class can be hard to write.
Feldt is helpful. You should always talk to him during his office hours to make sure your papers are on the right track. But his A's are hard to get!!!
One of my faves!! As are incredibly hard to earn, but CAN be earned with work No tests, just papers (require productive thought, but aren't "hard") Takes a participation grade. Be vocal and speak a lot in class and it'll make up for the day or two you miss Passionate, intelligent, and handsome. Also sarcastic and dry, but all part of his charm
Dr. Feldt is a fantastic instructor, is passionate about what he teaches & has a great sense of humor. Be prepared to write at least 4-5 short papers. If you attend class & participate in lecture (it is really fun to participate in this class) papers are very easy to write. He is a fair grader & always available to discuss upcoming assignments.
Dr. Feldt is an extremely tough grader. He offers his office hours and email to comment on papers, but I found his comments very confusing and not helpful at all leaving me is a worse situation. It is impossible to earn an A is this course because he grades too hard and expects too much for a distribution requirement class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Moral theory exam is hard and has material on it that he says he won't be. There are reading quizzes for class everyday. There are 5-6 papers at min of 800 words each. I went to office hours for every paper and he made it more confusing. I am going to make a lower grade in this class than ones in my major. An A is impossible
Overall a great teacher. He is extremely engaged with his class, both during and outside of class. He does assign a lot of reading and paper writing, but there is only one test. His grading methods are tough, but fair, and he gives tons of constructive criticism. You will need the textbook, unless you think you can locate the readings online.
Alex is an engaging professor who is up front about both how the class will be approached and the material. Expect daily reading quizzes which take around 10 minutes max, four papers of no more than 800 words each, a reasonable exam early in the semester, the ability to make appointments with constructive criticism, and overall a great class.
Very subjective grader,I think getting an A is more about luck than anything. His tests require definitions (good luck finding the one he wants) and essays (good luck as well). His feedback on papers contain grammatical errors, as does his sample paper. He refers to himself in the third person, and drinks soda everyday but wears a fitbit, stay away
He is an awesome teacher and is hilarious. However, if you do not like presenting in front of groups, do not take this class. We have three presentations throughout the year and they are essential to the grading scale. He is awesome but the reading questions are every day.
He is a funny teacher and definitely puts energy into his presentations. He is a very strict grader though and his class is mainly presentations that are almost impossible to receive A's on. Other than the strict grading, he is such a nice person and tries to be personal and tries to relate to all students.
Just do the work and you'll be fine. Take advantage of office hours!
Great Prof fun great conversations. You must give presentations in front of class, but are graded fair. Their are a couple of papers, weekly readings and reflection journal. He give a ton of feedback and has fun with the content. I would take it again. Show up, do the work and you will do fine.
I don't think Alex liked me, but I thoroughly enjoyed his class and I felt that though the grading was tough, that it was fair and that he had a reasonable--though demanding-- view of the class. I learned a lot and would probably take him again.
PHIL 244 is an oral communication class. Feldt gives NO guidance on the way he wants presentations delivered, but grades harder than a public speaking class. He will take off for obscure things, whether or not they happened.
This class was tough but enjoyable. There are only a few things you are graded on so everything is a decent chunk of your grade. As long as you put in a few nights worth of work, you'll get decent grades on everything. Pay attention and participate in class, he likes that. He is easy to get along with, just a tough grader.
Pretty cool guy! But he reviewed the textbook we used so make sure you really know the material.
Lots of reading, but if you do your work and show up you should be fine.
Awesome guy who gives great feedback on assignments. Class is always fun and he knows how to keep kids talking and how to manage the discussions of tough topics. There is a fair amount of work, but its totally reasonable.
You are given an exam early in the semester that is 20% of your grade; if you dont do well on this exam dont expect to have a good grade in the overall course. You given reading quizzes the semester that Alex says be easy and are there to help youre grade, but theyre designed to trick you and if you miss 2 questions you fail the quiz.
Alex is a great professor! He gives great feedback, and has always been so caring and willing to help. He always responds to emails which is awesome since some professors do not. He does make you work for your grade, which is what a professor should do. He makes class as interesting as possible. Would definitely take again.
Dr. Feldt takes his job very seriously which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, he comes off as condescending and he can't take a joke. You are graded by very few things but he gives reading quiz to buffer your grade. However, these reading quizzes are only 5 questions and drop your grade significantly if you miss even one question.
This class is honestly a lot of work. I originally took this class finish 2 gen eds. He's a cool professor and it's interesting to hear his perspectives, but the book is pretty terrible. Do not take this class unless you truly believe you are a philosophical thinker and can elaborate on command. Graded by a few things that are weighed very heavily.
You need to take this class seriously. Come to class, take good notes, participate in discussion, and go to office hours for your papers. You will need the book for online quizzes. Alex has interesting lectures, though, so make it to class! Also, we take random sections' attendance every lecture so you never know which days you'll need to be there
Dr. Feldt was awesome. He genuinely likes what he does and it makes you care about the class. You have to know what he's looking for to make a really good grade. Take this class seriously, show up, study, and do the readings. Work hard on the papers, take longer than a day to do them they are no joke and GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, they help a ton
The key to success in the course is participation. There is one exam worth 15% of your grade four weeks into the semester, but if you understand the concepts you'll do okay. A large amount of your grade will be determined by four writing assignments that are not too long. If you read the quizzes can help your grade. Don't regret taking this class.
Definitely not an easy A but the class is interesting and worth putting work into. He doesn't give out A's often but you get what you put into it. Also, such a cutie 10/10
Feldt is very charismatic and has a great sense of humor. However, I couldn't help but notice that almost every reading / discussion we had tended to lean left. Some much more than others. I will say he was definitely not hostile to those that challenged what he taught, but be aware that you will learn a lot about liberal values in his 252 class.
Alex is a tough grader, but he understands that every one is not a philosopher. Do not take this class if you want an easy A , but I really learned a lot.
Dr. Feldt is charismatic and makes lectures interesting. However, I felt like no matter how hard I worked in this class, I could not get an A. I went to office hours a lot, but I think the grading is unfair since papers are graded by TA's. I don't think mine handed out A's as much as the others. Your grade is made up of mostly papers and one test.
Feldt is nice and the class is average. Participation is mandatory for discussion but not for lecture. MUST read book!! Only test, a few papers, and many reading quizzes. Tough grader for papers, the average is around a B or B-
Dr. Feldt was a great, understanding professor. Anything you turn in is graded by your TA, so the grading can be a little unfair. He makes sure you can access them or him outside of class, offered at least 7-8 points of extra credit, and works with you to help you pass. Not an easy A, but you can pass with a solid B. Make sure to read the book!
Loved having him for a gen ed. Excellent lectures and easy to understand. He doesn't teach his opinion, he just teaches how to argue both sides. Can tell that he cares about and understands students. Always ready to help and very approachable.
Alex was an awesome gen ed teacher! His lectures were always entertaining and if you take good notes you should be able to get by just fine. I did minimal studying and reading and passed with a B-. I'd also take the extra step and interact in the lectures. He does a really good job at challenging opinions and really get you thinking.
Has awesome, relaxed lectures and very explicit directions for any assignment given. The material is interesting and fun to discuss. However, if you're not comfortable with arguing in a paper or you write papers last minute, this class is not for you. Only when I got my papers edited by my TA at least 2 times I got an A on them.
If you are looking for an easy gen ed I would not take this one
Professor Feldt is very passionate about Philosophy and if you put the time into the class you will be fine. The class is determined by papers and reading quizzes but as long as you get help from your TA's and do the required readings its a class that you will succeed in
I took this class online. There are two papers per week, so get ready to write, but theyre not too bad. However, there is a lot of reading for this course and if you don't read the text, it will only hurt you. I tried to be explicit in my arguments for certain decisions but he is a tough grader. Also, he did not round my 86.94 to an 87 B+.
Absolutely amazing! Very good at going into depth on questions and knows the subject well. He doesn't show his views in lectures which is nice because it doesn't alienate anyone, and he's just a really cool professor. Definitely take his class!!
Would not recommend, avoid at all cost. Papers are graded by TA's that grade really hard. They expect you to be as proficient as they are in philosophy despite it being just a Gen ed. On top of that there is a lot of assignments. 3 papers, 1 exam, a two part final (in class exam and take home paper), and there are 2 reading quizzes a week.
Probably one of the better PHIL 252 professors. I wouldn't call attendance mandatory, but he does take random attendance a few times. 4 or so papers throughout the semester, graded by TAs. Go to TA office hours and get their help with papers! Those are a decent portion of your grade and are graded hard. Lectures are fairly interesting.
Professor Feldt is the stereotypical philosophy professor who thinks hes the smartest guy in the world. He is very lecture heavy. If you ask him for help on a paper he just argues against you rather than giving feedback. I could barely listen to him talk, I would not recommend this class.
As a student who gets A's this class was very frustrating. The grading on assignments is unpredictable. Follow the rubric and you still most likely will be deducted points for something you had no idea about. Grades fluctuate between TA's and going to your TA to ask about your grade will not result in a change or any clarity.
One of the hardest gen ed classes I have taken. On the papers and exams, it is almost impossible to get an A. TA's grade very harshly. If you are not passionate about philosophy, Alex makes it hard for you to excel in this class.
This was a difficult class, especially since I was considering it as a GE requirement. However, the coursework itself provides excellent opportunities to expand your philosophical understanding of different perspectives. His class is extremely writing-heavy regarding length, percentage of your grade, and grading criteria.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is very rude and makes you feel dumb. He does not actually teach you how to write the papers, just talks. You are better off getting your writing credit somewhere else because he teaches unless material as well.
Philosophy sucks in general, especially for the average college student who has little to no experience in the field. Dr. Feldt expects every student to be some type of expert, and if you don't meet the standard, you receive bad grades. Tons of work with very unclear and convoluted instructions. He is a nice guy, but get ready to read and write.
Do not take. Unrealistic and unclear expectations. Extremely typical know-it-all philosophy professor. This guy is as boring and dry as they come.
I've only been in this class for a little over a month... and I hate it. Class is ridiculously boring. I hoped it would be a relatively easy introductory class but it's not. Some of the material is very difficult to understand and a lot of the questions you have to write about are very vague. For a Gen Ed credit, it's too hard. Avoid if possible.
Feldt is a cool chill guy, but I don't recommend taking him for an online course. The standard he holds for grading papers is a bit too high, not all of us are philosophy majors. There are much more lenient grading professors that would give a better grade for the same papers written.
Alex is fantastic! So kind and passionate. Ive truly learned so much about constructing/analyzing arguments & found this class insanely useful despite being a Bio major. Papers are graded hard, but Alex/TAs are more than happy to help and truly give helpful feedback. I would say visiting their office hours are a must if you want an A on a paper.
Although most of the assignments are papers, the lectures from Dr. Feldt provide inside to what the textbook talks about and dives deeper into philosophical issues. There are many opportunities to earn extra credit and participation in this class!
Alex is a nice person and is willing to help. I took this as a Gen Ed and I thought this class would be fun and interesting. It quickly turned into a class that I was constantly stressed about. There is so much material and not very much time is spent on each part. I had to take this class but I heard that other teachers were much more relaxed.
I took this class online thinking I could skim by how many other online classes go. That was not true- watch all of the lectures! When he says things are "optional", they are not, they actually count towards your engagement grade. If you go to his office hours they will help and I think that makes him grade easier. Passionate about his field
He clearly knows his stuff, but the class is over-structured and doesn't focus on ideas so much as rubrics. Also, weirdly he kind of requires you to agree with him on major, disputed topics within philosophy or your essay gets a bad grade... And he's open about it at the start of class
It is impossible to find the words to describe how terrible this professor is within the RMP guiendlines. All I can say is if you value your own opinion and don't like to be yelled at when asking for feedback on a paper, do not take him. He is hands down the worst professor I have had. He would be better if he actually cared about his students.
About 4 papers and a couple exams in the semester that are graded extremely harshly no matter how hard you try. Very lecture based and a lot of confusing readings. For a gen ed classs that had nothing to do with my major, I regret taking this class everyday and I will never use this information again. Would highly recommend taking somebody else.
This dude sucks. You have to write so much and the topics are very hard. On top of that he grades super hard. This will be the first class I receive a C in after 2 years of College.
The class can be easy if you are very interested in it, but you might find it difficult. Despite the coursework Dr. Feldt is very kind and helpful.
this is not an easy A class but it is really interesting and dr. feldt is a really entertaining lecturer. lots of reading and attendance is mandatory but I did not mind that much because the lectures were interesting to listen to. you should definitely take this class if you want to know about real world issues. dr. feldt is really cool.
Awesome class!
If you do the readings and come to class, this class is easy. The topics are interesting and I enjoyed the discussion class and my TA. The papers can be time consuming (only 2 though) but you can always go to Feldt or your TA for help. Both exams are take home! Dr. Feldt is caring and over the semester you learn to appreciate his humor lol.
Dr. Feldt was an awesome professor. Although his class was challenging at first, he gave plenty of opportunities for extra-credit and assistance in the later half of the semester. He was always willing to go out of his way to assist students and make the lectures fun and engaging!
GO TO CLASS!! 40% of your grade is participation. This class was challenging and had to put in the work. There are 2 papers that you have to write, weekly quizzes, and two take-home exams.
While Dr. Feldt is a nice person, but his style of teaching is not very easy for everyone to grasp. I understand that bioethics is a hard concept to grasp, but if you write something and put your heart into it and he does not like it, that will severely affect your grade.
Attendance is very important!! At first the class is difficult to understand, but eventually I got the hang of it. He is good at what he does and he gives lots of time for the final paper.
An excellent and engaging professor. This class is paper filled with 3 papers total but if you try or go to office hours they can be easy As. Participation is 60 percent of your grade so show up and do the point solutions. If you show up to lectures and discussions you don't need to read the textbook, because he covers basically the same thing.
Professor Feldt: great guy and is really passionate about philosophy. Just from experience, I wouldn't take this class unless you are actually interested in philosophy: which I am not. Paper heavy and lecture heavy.. def pay attention. I would recommend not taking the version with an 8am discussion. That walk to Strong that early was brutal.
If you value your overall sanity, do not take Professor Feldt. He claims that you can choose your own stance for each of the arguments you have to write, but already has a predetermined notice of what he wants you to write about and tanks your grade as a result. Also, you can't include basic scientific facts to set a basis for your argument.
Dr. Feldt was a great professor with very engaging lectures. He was very open and available to help students outside of class-time and you can tell he is very passionate about the topic of the class. Attendance and participation is important + 4-ish major papers. Doesn't believe in easy A's, but you will definitely learn if you take his class.
Dr. Feldt is a great professor! He definitely challenges you to think outside the box. Meet with him to discuss drafts of papers, he will bring up counterarguments you'd never think of, and it will help your grade tremendously. The effort you put into the class is what you will get out of it, it isn't easy, but it's worth it.
Philosophy didn't click with me, so I struggled to write papers. However, the papers were toughly graded. The class averages were always around the 70s.
Very well structured classes and super fun, actually cares about his students. If you want to do well in this class just read the chapter before the class and turn in the work. the work is not graded hard and the work in itself is not very hard at all. I would totally take this class again.
He was a really nice guy and seemed to care a lot, I just never understood anything he was saying. Philosophy didn't really click with me, and was always talking way over our heads, like he was lecturing for a grad class. I tried really hard on the papers just couldn't really grasp it. beware if you're not already good at Phil. Great guy tho
Dr. Feldt is a good lecturer, however, he fails to explain what he's talking about in depth. He goes over a topic once and then puts it on an exam or assignment. The papers are graded though and critically. I personally don't think there's any reason for an intro philosophy class to be this hard. I wouldn't recommend this course with Feldt.
He had to step in for another professor who could not teach 252. He did not understand the class layout, but did not give much grace on grading. He didn't explain why he took points off and was always giving me 70s SMH
Disrespectful and full of himself for seemingly no reason. Took over for another prof a month into the semester and did not give students time to adapt to an entirely new course format. Grades take weeks and it's unclear what you're supposed to be doing. Also posts assignments over university breaks (including Easter) which is, again, disrespectful
This was supposed to be taught by Windeknecht but he wasn't able to. I got the sense that Feldt really didn't like teaching this class and he took it out on the students. It's entirely group work with a very very strict absent policy. And you have to do a lot of it over the weekend.
Dr. Feldt is a nice guy but as a teacher he is a bit cold and kind of unkind. He is a pretty tough grader and does not really follow his own "excused absence" policy and it will affect your grade. I got points off my presentation for being nervous...take that as you will.
He taught my class instead of the regular professor and while I understand the extra commitment/work it took it felt like he was unhappy teaching us. It was solely group work that took the whole class period to complete so he was mad we weren't "discussing" but it was only because we didn't want to have to do the work outside of the class time.
Dr Feldt is a good professor but do not take this class if you can take another ethics class if it is required. Specifically all the TAs grade the papers, however, they grade insanely hard and rarely give you feedback on what you did wrong. If you go to office hours they give you ideas to improve your paper but then critique in the final grade.
Do not take class with him. The whole class is group work (and I took the online class), so it's pretty annoying. You have to put in SO MUCH work for it literally being a gen ed class. He's very sarcastic in his emails and obviously dislikes when any of the course content was questioned. Hated almost every email interaction with him.
The class was a bit confusing at first, but going to discussion really helped. The class does have a lot of writing, so be aware of that; however, my TA always gave great feedback on my drafts before submitting them. You also get one free 72 hour extension no questions asked which I really appreciated. Feldt is interesting, but the class isn't hard
Honestly the grading isn't that bad. I think the difficulty of grading depends on the TA you get for your discussion session. If you read the textbook the content is not that hard to understand. However, during lecture, Dr. Feldt didn't really explain some of the terminology during lecture so it was confusing at times.
Dr. Feldt clearly cares about the material and his students. He explains in depth the structure and expectations of the class and its assignments. Much of your grade is in the hands of your TA though as this is a large lecture class. I enjoyed the class, and it has definitely changed how I think.
One of the best classes I have taken at this school because of the amount I learned. It is also one of the more difficult classes, but not too bad. Class is mandatory for the clickers, but the clickers are always the answers to the quizzes so it's very important that you go. Must participate in discussions, also lots of writing! Overall 10/10 prof.
Grade is dependent on a few major projects and quizzes. Professor is helpful for the most part but the content is pretty difficult and somewhat allover the place. TA does pretty much all grading and teaches 1/3 of the time. My TA was really hard to work with. Would not recommend the class but maybe it would be better with a different TA.
I've never had a more annoying professor. He has a huge ego, and is an unnecessarily tough grader. I am typically an A student. I have a 3.85, and I have received only 2 other B's and they were biochemistry and Organic chemistry 2. I actually worked hard in this class, but he doesn't seem to care. Only take this class if you want to drop your GPA.
Awesome class and he had some of the best presenting skills I've ever seen. Show up, participate in class and do the assignments based on the criteria you're given. Don't overthink it, ask questions, participate in class (saying that again on purpose) and your grade will be good.
Half of your grade is fully dependent on what TA you have, so try to choose wisely here. While Feldt seems like a decent guy, I would rather take a Razor scooter to the shins a thousand times before I have to write any of those nonsense essays ever again.
Literally 50% of the class was participation so if you have a hard time speaking out loud in class (like I did) I wouldn't recommend Dr. Feldt. That being said, I did fine in his class as there are other ways to make up for it. Papers and content weren't too difficult, I just feel like Dr. Feldt is kinda rude if you ever run into him 1on 1
I would NOT take this. My TA is unnecessarily strict and expects essays to align with THEIR idea of the concept. Dr. Feldt has been a fine teacher, but expects honors-level work in a standard course. No.
Dr.Feldt was a good professor. He really makes himself accessible to all his students when you need help on a paper. Only downside was the class consisted of mainly like 4 grades, which means you need to seek help if you do poorly on the first paper.
Worst professor I've ever had no joke. Bro thinks he's the king of the world, not even exaggerating. Seriously, never met a professor with an ego as large as his, nor someone who grades this difficult. Only take him if you want your GPA to plummet.
PHIL244 with Dr. Feldt is extremely participation-heavy, but the material is very interesting and applicable. Most of our grade came from presentations. He is a harsh grader but gives great feedback, and I recommend going to his office hours for help. Due to the nature of the class, I would not take him again, but he was very personable and caring.
I took his class last fall and he was a very tough grader on the papers and presentation. I personally would not recommend you to take his class.
Dr. Feldt is one of the best professors I've had at UT. He's chill, fair, and engaging, gives great feedback, and plays devil's advocate in discussions. Attendance and participation matter most (50% of grade). Highly recommend! He does openly say that the online is more challenging than his in-person classes. Humorous guy and also likes sports.
Comes off as a pretentious guy that thinks he knows better than you and WILL want to argue with you. Only grades papers and grades them hard. Would never take again. Grade A asshole
