if you actually want to learn about history from a different perspective that the united states, Mr. Gerould is the best teacher for the job! He's very informantive and very clear. TWO THUMBS UP!
Learned alot in his class. very well organized and has great lectures. If you want a good history class that requires time and energy, but pays with what you learn Gerould is the teacher to have.
I think he is one of the best teacher's at De Anza his lectures are great.
good teacher and grades very fairly. But his lectures are sooo boring. might fall asleep. really easy weekly quizzes though. also gives out an easy 3-page paper to do.
Great teacher, always prepared, interesting lectures. Very fair.
Excellent teacher, lectures are very interesting and thorough. He is nice and fair. If you show up to class, listen, take notes and do the reading you will do well and learn a lot of history in the process.
This guy is a stud. He comes to class well prepared and his lectures are awesome. Overall the class was not too hard. I got an A on the 3pg paper and final and he gave me an A in the course even though my overall grade was a B. He's a generous professor!
He is a good teacher but I think I should have gotten an A rather than a B.
"UMM.. AHHH... The Notion" These are KEY phrases you will here in his lectures. I think overall it was an Easy class, but the Essay Final I found to be challenging. The lectures are BORING, But it's HISTORY what do you expect. Very FAIR ON GRAD
His is a good teacher knows his stuff. His lectures aren't bad although they tend to come straight from the book. His final can be tough if you don't prepare for it. Over all it's a good class.
Keeps it interesting.
Think Discovery Channel when taking this class. I read the ratings before the class and everyone was right. Love this class! He was so well spoken and very very interesting. I can't wait to take his other courses. He used dates and outside sources, big +!
This teacher is awesome! There are weekly quizes which he prepares you for in class and the homework is very easy. He speaks very clearly and tells you exactly what you need to know to get a good grade.
He was okay, his is really boring though. when he lectures it's hard to stay awake. the quizes are really easy, you don't even have to read the text book, just the document reader for the papers, which are also really easy. Make sure to leave plenty of time to read the novel, it's hard
Prof Gerould is extremely clear and offers a great workload, not too difficult and always interestng
Excellent teacher who made a fun history class. Very easy as long as you turn in homework every week and concentrate on his lecture. He helps students prepare for exam and final.
one of the best history classes ever taken at de anza. didn't buy the book and still got a B. one 10 question quiz each week and fun and interesting lectures. take alex's class if you want a fun history class and an easy grade.
Prof Gerould is just amazing. He gives clear instruction and guides you along the course. There is a weekly quiz, assingment, a novel and the final. Overall it was a easy class and he made history interesting. It is an easy "A" if you turn in your homework. He is handsome and I liked his class. Highly recommended.
He is a easy "A" teacher. After taking his class, you will be agree with me.
You can never be sleepy in his class. His voice is so clear and the way he teaches is just like telling funny stories about historical events. I didn't even open the book for the whole quarter. Just come to class and listen to the lecture, do the quizz and that's it. You have to turn in your homework though. No midterm :) Enjoy!
You don't even need to open the book in his class, because his lectures are well organized and coincide with what will be on the exams. Easy homework, no midterm.

Can be a funny man. He uses great stories to demonstrate important points in history. Worth taking another class with him. Gave me a new appreciation for the history of our country. Yes, his voice is booming - you can hear him all the way across a courtyard!
Just take it with him. He's the best.
First of all HE IS SO HOT!!!!:). Well the class is easy: quiz everyday after lecture soo pay attention because everything he says would be in the quiz. There are written assigments every week which require to read (they are k) Final super easy. Besides that he is a good looking guy, he is nice and very helpful. Take him
One of the best history professors I've ever had at De Anza. He is very clear and intelligent. Lectures were very appealing and comprehensive. Mr. Gerould makes you think and write about history in a very special and coherent way. Essays and Final are very interesting and straightforward. JUST TAKE HIM.
He kinda resembles Brad Pitt. He's an excellent teacher, his lectures make history easily understandable. I never liked history back in high school, but taking his class makes me enjoy learning it. There's a quiz at the end of the class on everything he lectured on, so just pay attention.
If I wasn't so stressed by life,I wouldve enjoyed the course more. Each lecture is like a great novel or a great film. he leaves an outline in class and goes through each point and ties it up with a central theme. Quizes/Papers were straightforward drops lowest each. He gives you a final review which was helpful. "Do what you love" Awesome Person
A great teacher that can actually make something like the beginning of time interesting. Pay attention during his lectures, and you'll get a good grade. Quizzes and papers aren't hard either. He also gives out a study sheet/test questions for the final, but you might have to look up some of the questions from websites.
He keeps his lectures entertaining. Your grade is based on papers, quizzes, and a final exam. Papers are simple as long as you do the article readings (short), and quizzes are right after lecture so pay attention and take down notes. He gives questions for the final beforehand. Tries to add everyone, and his lectures will keep you awake
Humorous and clear. Tough on turning in papers (you can miss one) on time but everything else is pretty chill. Most of the stuff on the quiz is the same as what he lectures minus a question or two based off the book. Would absolutely recommend - a quick A for rather little work.
Pretty easy class. Attendance was mandatory. It was once a week, but he let us out an hour early. You have to do 4 tough papers only hard documents (drops one), 10 quizzes (drops one) and a final MC test. Easy A or B depending on how much you pay attention to the lectures and key points. The quizzes are all lecture based.
The class only met once a week so attendance IS mandatory but its fairly easy. Just read the chapters ahead of time so that you have more clarity during lecture. There are 5 papers but he takes the best 4, the papers are somewhat difficult as the prompt he gave us wasnt very clear on what he wanted. Overall fair teacher..
Fair teacher. The class is lecture based and you need to pay attention. He is very funny, nice and keeps the class entertained. The short papers we had to write was a little difficult. This was the second class I've had with him and his papers are getting harder. So make sure to read and pay attention.
This guy is awesome i took his one day a week 17c and it was great he lectures then gives a quiz on the lecture super easy you just have to be there...the papers are average but not overly challenging and he is an entertaining lecturer
This guy's a great teacher. Very clear and entertaining lecture. Workload is light-moderate, 4 1-2 page papers total, he drops lowest. Tough grader on the papers, you have to analyze deeply. Quizzes and final are easy and multiple choice.
how can a teacher be this great?!
Makes class interesting that it seems easy. The answer for the quizzes is obvious, everything is in the lecture and text. Do your reading and listen to the lecture and you will be fine. Put effort into the essay and you will easily get an A
Keeps class interesting, is very passionate about history and has a sense of humor. If you want to have a good History teacher, TAKE THIS ONE.
Such an easy class. You don't really need to even buy the 100 dollar textbook.... Very Very little work assigned and lets you out an hour early every class if you're taking the 4 hour class and you also get a 15 minute break. There is a weekly quiz that is EXTREMELY easy and based on if the lecture. No Midterms and Final is insanely easy.
He makes history as entertaining as possible. His quiz's are easy if you go to class. He's not bad to look at :P
Completely Awesome. If all teachers taught this way, going to college would be so much fun. would highly recommend taking his class. A++
Coursework and (short) quizzes are arranged in a fashion that makes getting an "A" child's play. Very considerate, entertaining, and highly intelligent indivudual. Longevity and focus is easily kept throughout class despite it's 4 hour duration. Worthwhile once a week class, learn history through the eyes of an eloquent & passionate intructor.
Great teacher. He can make history come alive through lecture. Take this class.
Super awesome. Can you believe there is Easy A, Super interesting and Funny Class? Just take him, Not only do you learn a lot of stuff, but you also get A.
I waited to take history until the end transferring because I HATE history, BUT this man changed it all. The way he explains things makes it interesting and makes me want to be in class! Easy quizzes, one 2pg paper, and final which he gives a study guide. Am taking more history with him for a GPA boost!
Funny professor and easy. What more can you ask for? Quiz (10 questions) after each lecture, 3 essays, and a final exam. Fun class.
GPA Killer! If you are a native speaker you will be ok. I studied from the book but nothing was listed on the quizes and tests.:( You have to write very well on the 3 papers. His classes are funny and interesting, but if your ESL student good luck trying to get a good grade!
Think Jim Rome teaching history. Gerould really engages students with his nontraditional, pragmatic style. He lists the daily topics on the board prior to beginning lecture and discusses them like he's narrating a movie. He's insanely passionate, how he retains his knowledge is beyond me. 3 essays, simple post-lecture quizzes, one final. Rec'd.
I would recommend this professor. I took the long Friday class, and yes, I was very tired through a lot of it...It was easy enough to listen, however. He is very funny and well spoken. Assignments consist of weekly quizzes, three papers and a final. He was not as difficult as I'd expected; I received an A. He is pretty nasty to late comers.
He only teaches on Fridays so try not to skip class. It's not as grueling as I expected - very animated and gets his students interested. He gives you weekly quizzes and 4 papers but drops your lowest grade from both. He has a good sense of humor and I've never seen him lash out at his students. I think he's a great teacher!
Mr. Gerould is a great teacher. Although I'm more interested in American History, and was admittedly dreading a World History class, he did an amazing job bringing the subject to life; placing emphasis on relatable themes. Weekly quizzes (worst is dropped), and 4 papers (only the best 3 count for your grade). Definitely recommend.
He is one of the easiest History teachers at De Anza. I hate history and never had more than a C in my history classes. I got a B without even reading the book. His study guide for final is pretty much all the questions in the final. Weekly super easy quizzes, and 3 easy bs papers. Dropped the lowest paper and a quiz. A piece of cake! Take him!
he is such a great professor. very interesting class. his teaching style is so chill and clear and you can still learn a lot from his lectures. come to class everyday and do all of the essays then you will be fine. Seriously if you don't get a B or higher in this class than it's ur fault. HIGH RECOMMEND!
Very engaging with his students, funny, charming, and you can tell he is very passionate about history. His quizzes are straight forward (drops 1; 1/3 of grade) and requires 4 papers (drops 1; 1/3 of grade )and the final (1/3 of grade). Ive taken history classes in the past which are usually pretty dry, his delivery with the material was awesome.
Take this class. It's long, but it goes by so fast. I hated US history but this easily became my favorite class. He teaches history like he's telling a story by making it interesting and funny. He's not a tricky grader at all. Just come to the lectures, pay attention (which is easy to do) and you'll do great. But never be late to class. Ever.
Very passionate and engagingly silly. Not into regurgitating names and dates - focuses on important social/environmental factors, people and events and their meaning. Very reasonable workload, clear about expectations. Highly recommend any class he may be teaching.
Proffersor Gerould is a very good teacher. He's nice and you just have to put in some work on the writting assigntments. Take him if you want to pass.
I honestly really enjoy going to class. Although it was on a Friday. It's not as bad as it sounds There's a 20 min break. 4 writing assignment (Drops 1). There's a quiz every week (Drops 1). His lectures are very interesting. History is alive and made us understand what was going on during that time very well.
Historically remarkable! He narrates history in an specific way which would mesmerize you. His quizzes are truly easy for those who listen to his lectures. Therefore, listen, read and enjoy the stories of time.
I never really was into History, but Professor Alexander changed all that. Chill and laid back kind of guy. His lectures were awesome and very informative. Never boring. He is great and keeps you awake in that four hour class lecture. NO LIE. I highly recommend him. Thanks for everything Professor.
Easy A class. He turned history to a interesting class. Don't' hesitate to take his class. You'll at least pass the class if you try hard enough.
Super entertaining. Had his class on a Friday for 3 hours and I never got bored. He teaches History like a story. Quizzes are everyday after the lectures but what he just lecture on is what the quiz is about, so just listen during lecture and you will get a good great. DO NOT BE LATE, he hates that. Super funny and nice. 3 papers. take his class.
He changed my mind about history classes. Professor Gerould is amazing. He is very enthusiastic in teaching history to students. It is hard to fail his class when you have so much opportunities.
I had this class once a week for three and a half hours and he absolutely made the time fly by. There is a quiz after every lecture, but as long as you pay attention and take notes you will do well! Study for the midterm the study guide is your key to get an A. The final was a paper. Great teacher, honestly sad that the class is over.
Professor Gerould's passion for history is evident during lecture. He is extremely knowledgeable, gracious, and caring. He really makes history the class you want to go to. Professor Gerould is the best.
SUPER LONG LECTURES!! He only grades on quizzes once a week, midterm and the final. You wont pass the class if you dont pay attention to his lectures. He is a very hard grader. Absolutley no homework besides reading. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY FOR THE MIDTERM! The class is so big there is absolutley no class interaction. ONLY LECTURE LECTURE LECTURE!
Professor Gerould teaches history in a clear manner. You have to listen and be there (no slideshows). There's a quiz (10 questions) after each lecture but he drops the lowest. 1 midterm and 1 final essay. Won't be an easy class if listening is not your learning style. Overall a nice and funny professor. Make sure to arrive on time!
Best prof i have ever had. I looked forward to his class despite it being at 9:30AM friday. Funny, engaging, informative, and knowledgeable. Made the class fun and easy. 50% quiz (after weekly lecture) and 50% final paper on book he wrote. Dont need to read textbook, lectures are enough to ace quizzes. I was genuinely sad when the class was over.
Possibly one of the BEST professors at De Anza I have seen. I used to look forward to each lecture everyday. He keeps everyone attentive with his enthusiastic lectures. If you pay attention and take good notes you can get an easy A in the class. There is a 4-5 single pages paper that is based of his book which is interesting. Must take class!
Simple. Quiz based on lecture @ end of class. Final paper based off a book he cowrote which is slightly irrelevant to the course. He just wants people to buy his book. Does the bare minimum and succeeds, just like me.
I had Gerould for the summer. I'm not someone who likes history but he really made it come to life for me and made me really excited to come to class every morning. He's lenient and enthusiastic about his subjects. He doesn't read from slides. He lectures to you like a peer. He is very clear. 10/10 would take again, no hesitation.
One of the best profs at De Anza. Multiple choice quiz each week, which is fairly easy if you listen to the lecture. 4-5 pages single spaced paper as the final. The lecture is done to be relevant to you and your life, which enables you to understand well. I used to hate history class but this prof has changed it. I definitely would take him again.
Very energetic when doing his lectures and seems to be very passion about teaching history. Class overall is pretty easy if you pay attention and do well on the quiz. Have to type a 4-5 page paper towards the end but gives you about a month to complete it before it is due. Highly recommend you take his class!
great teacher. wish i could take another one of his classes.
Best history lectures! Literally like watching a documentary on BBC/ Netflix, truly a work of art. Engaging, entertaining, and informative. Wish I could take him for all my classes. Quizzes based on previous lecture, relatively straightforward. Two papers, one counts as your final. Take him, you won't regret it.
Chill and laid back professor. Pretty interesting lectures but can get boring if taking his Friday class for 4 hours (but he only lectures for 3). Quiz at the end of every class on his lecture. Just pay attention and take notes on his lectures. Need book for final paper, Don't need main book. 4-5 pages single paced, but lenient on grading.
Very few times in life you run into those kind of excellent teachers who help students grow as professionals. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to be in a class with one of bests. He is very professional and the most important his experience make the lecture digestible. If you read this teacher your in my list of the best teachers I've had in my life
He is really good! His lecture is very engaging and interesting, and makes people love history. However, it can be a little bit challenging for international students if your English listening isnt too good. But pay more efforts and you will get an A just like me.
His lectures are very interesting. I would not say that it is a very easy A but is certainly not a hard A. I say this because so little is put into the grade book so there is little room for mistakes on the quizzes/tests/final essay. Nevertheless, I know tons of people that received an A in his class so just pay attention to lectures and do reading
Great sense of humor on this guy. You learn lots, and it sticks cause the lecture is memorable. Gotta read though; there's a (easy) MC quiz at the end of the lecture. Grading is divided into 1/3 weekly quizzes, 1/3 final exam, 1/3 final essay. Exam got canceled (for reasons) so I can't judge it, but the essay just needs you to show you tried. 10/10
He is actually a good prof, funny and rly pays effort in teaching. However, I strongly dont recommend international students esp those who are not good in English to take him. He uses hard vocab. His class need you to pay 100% attention to listen which is hard cuz his class is held on Fri early morning & there is a quiz before the class ends.
Gerald is great! I had his Friday morning class and he always made his lectures engaging and humorous. He also let us out earlier than the class ended which was nice. Quizzes every week, but you can get a good grade on them easily just by listening to his lectures before he hands them out. Highly recommend him!!
He is very interesting. I used to hate history class because it was difficult to learn another country's history. After taking his class, it changed me. The class was still hard, but it was very enjoyable. He never let us get bored by his teaching. Quiz every week. As long as you pay attention during the class, should be fine. Just enjoy the class.
highly recommend professor Gerould, if you like US history, this is a great match. ends his Friday class early. I would not recommend this class to non english speakers. a quiz at the end of every class. easy final. laptop friendly, his voice has a lot of energy so you wont fall asleep. overall, he's a dope and humble guy!!
I cant understand why his rate is so high. I attended all classes and took all tests and even submitted final on time, but he gave me under B. It was soooo stressful for me when i was taking his class. No clear documents or papers to study, he just talks during the whole class so when u black out just one time, then ull miss whole class.
Took him on Fridays for 4 hours! every class had a 10 question quiz at the end based entirely on the lecture of that day and lowest test score gets dropped. Although the lectures were long, they felt like a movie or story time (gave 15 min breaks). The final was an essay that connects the readings to a topic of your choice. strict about phones
