Doesn't know about the subject, unorganized, unclear, wish the TA was teaching it!!
I think he's a fantastic teacher considering the broad scope of knowledge this class requires. He obviously puts time into what he teaches and has a clear understanding of all the complex tactical maneuvers involved in many key battles. It is a hard class, but if you work hard you should do well.
A good, knowledgeable lecturer and a reasonable and approachable marker as well. The Englishisms, like "bods" and "chaps" make the lectures that much better. Good stuff, highly recommended.
very well taught. I love watching the transition from overheads to powerpoint, he's the only man who can describe the battle of lexington in one sentence. you're the man dr. hill!
Interesting professor, but watch out for marking, you might get a surprise on your final mark compared to the midterm. I sure as hell did, and not in a good way.
Very helpful if you are willing to work hard. Don't take a class with him unless you want to put in a lot of time and effort.
He's a very good prof,He knows alot about the subject. He's funny and makes alot of jokes about the subject. Lots of people say he marks hard which is true but then again most people who say that are the idiots who don't know s@#t in the first place. Awesome prof I totally reccomend.
Good on broad overview of the topics but moves too quickly and refuses to slow down or repeat himself when asked. Felt like I had a cursory view of the subject and any indepth understanding came from my own reading outside of class materials. Also, enjoys injecting his politics into the class.
Very funny brit. Hill is a great prof who makes class fun and interesting and is not a hard marker either. may be said he doesnt go too far into depth but he will if you pry. Great teacher nonetheless.
Only understanding of strategy and tactics are what he read in a textbook. Should a military history prof be confused over the Roman order of battle? This is a boring class for anyone who knows their military history. Hippies might consider this military history but I don't. That be said the prof is a good guy and tries really hard.
Covers lots of ground quickly, but at least you don't get bored hearing the same point over and over again. Still, could slow down a bit sometimes. Doing a good job considering how broad the course is. He seemed happier with the more modern material for 383 last semester though. Can be funny. Actually really helpful if you go to see him.
If you are an international (ESL) and having trouble understanding british accent, don't take him! Horrible lectures, doesn't repeat anything, doesn't support lecturing with powerpoint slides or anything. Just stands there and reads for 75 minutes. The course is not that hard if you show him that you put some effort in it and read the textbook.
Really friendly funny man. I really liked him but he's a very hard marker and his lectures lack continuity or flow. He is getting better at power point but still throws out long Russian names and moves on while the class is still puzzling about how to spell the names.
Wasn't impressed at all. Very nice man, but horrible lecturer. Not clear, or organized or even coherent. Loved the accent, but couldn't understand it. Marked pretty hard, but fairly and was clear about his expectations. Overall I was disappointed and wouldn't take a class with him again. It's not worth the frustration.
I really found him to be the most helpful prof that I ever had. Sure sometimes the course does go a bit fast, but all ANYONE has to do is go ask for help. I received a fair mark, so I would encourage anyone to take his class. Plus he has a verry hot accent! So I do not undestand why so many people are giving Hill a bad score?
I was really looking foward to taking this class, it seemed incredibly interesting. Unfrotunetly I had a very bad experience with Dr. Hill. I went to ask him a question on day during his office hours and he made me fell dumb and asked me if I attended lectures and if I listened. Needless to say he is the most innapproachable prof I have ever had.
This prof is a jerk. He marks very hard. He has two 45% papers, and if you don't do well on one, you're pretty much screwed. The 10% final at the end of the class is cumulative and brutal. He has lectures that are sketchy, and don't follow a linear path at all. Good luck
This prof isn't bad, but he's not great either. He marks the essays pretty hard but with a little bit of work you should get an average grade in the B's. His final 0f 40 multiple choice questions was pretty easy. Uses a lot of videos (Sandhurst for the win) and is alright at using powerpoint. Overall the class is pretty average.
HTST379 was not a good course, but this course on World War II is so much better. Dr Hill really knows his stuff on World War II and the Eastern Front. He'll probably mark hard as usual, but the Hill/Wright lecture combo on WWII is worth the risk.
Dr. Hill eats and sleeps the material, and will challenge you to become a better history student. If you are serious about putting in the effort, it will be reflected in your marks. One of the best professors in the department.
I thought Hill was a very informative professor, and I ealy enjoyed his lectures. I would recommend taking a class with him as you will learn helpful writig tools for essays
Dr. Hill is a great prof. I don't understand any of the negative comments. He is really knowledgeable, helpful, and really personable and funny in his lectures. Teaches you how to write a successful essay and helps you out with exams as much as he can. I would definitely take another class with Dr. Hill.
Overall a pretty good professor. His lectures were always interesting and informative and he usually makes a couple good joke every class or so. He marks essays fairly tough but the tests were straightforward. He's approachable and helpful outside of class.
Very interesting course, but not an easy A. Final was brutal; I didn't miss a minute of class, took verbatim notes, studied more than enough, and got over 10 questions wrong - some questions simply were not covered in class. Deliberately confusing and vague; he ended up boosting everyone's grade on the final by 10%.
This was a seriously good course - Dr Hill and Dr Wright know so much about their parts of the course. I liked Dr Hill's dry humor. Dr Wrights easier grading balanced out Dr Hill's tough marking.
Dr. Hill is one of the kindest professors in the department. His willingness to help is boundless, and he is a tremendously funny man. An absolute delight, despite his more strident grading...just do the work and you'll be fine.
Intelligent, very helpful and typically makes his expectations for the papers clear. If you're not into writing in history, maybe stay away from his class in particular. But I'm a major and I loved the class, it was interesting and informative, worth the time and money. His tests are difficult but not worth much so it balances out.
He knows the subject matter well and is a very engaging lecturer who is very easy to listen to and take notes on. I very much enjoyed the class and would definitely take another by him in the future!
Dr Hill seems really in to WWII. His lectures were sometimes very detailed, but interesting. I LOVE his British accent :)
Was looking up profs I had because I was bored at work. Dr Hill was really helpful when I was still in undergrad. I took all his courses. He did expect you to work on your essays, maybe that is a problem for some people. I really loved his WWII lectures - and his Russia class.
I am taking his WWII course and it is really good. Dr Hill seems to know what he is talking about and can be funny sometimes.
Great class. Even the multiple choice test was funny, and Dr Hill loves the subject.
Dr. Hill knew the material well and is a good lecturer, but he is a very hard marker. Told the class that he rarely, if ever, gave As on papers. His final was poorly written and the questions were very difficult to understand consisting of double negatives and no punctuation. Not recommended unless you have a true passion for the material.
Taking this as an elective was a huge mistake. Dr. Hill is a very hard marked and told us that he considers a C+ to be a 'decent' essay and anything in the B range is really good. This deterred me from ever taking history again. I don't believe we are evaluated fairly based on what is normally expected of a third year class. Serious hit to my GPA
Expectations are clear and concise lectures are presented well and explanations of queries are very thorough but I would not recommend taking 400 level courses with Dr. Hill unless you are experienced in writing history papers. For those that are Dr. Hill is an excellent lecturer and his marking is fair.
Hill is a fantastic prof. He knows his material inside and out and teaches with a passion. The workload was more than reasonable and he is incredibly approachable once one takes the time to get to know him. I would definitely take a class from him again!
Taking his WWII class, and his lectures are great. This man really knows his WWII history.
Great lectures and he can be funny. Showed us some sample multiple choice test questions that were tougher than I thought they'd be. Helpful with the essay.
Professor Hill is a quirky character, exceptionally organised, but above all; incredibly knowledgeable about the "Great Patriotic War" of the Red Army during the Second World War. Relatively speaking, the course-load is light; but thus the assignments are extremely important. I would recommend.
Took both of his courses this semester; both were good. Showed some great movie clips of foreign movies today that were a really cool way to end the lectures.
Found him really funny in a strange sort of way. Love the British accent and the dry humor.
I took this is the Fall. I didn't think that alot of Russian history would be as interesting as Dr Hill made it. The multiple choice final was quite hard even for someone like me who went to class regularly, but it was great to be all done for the end of the semester and not have a scheduled final exam.
I am taking Dr Hill's Russian history class at the moment. The lectures are better than I thought they would be - he is actually really funny. One reason I took the course was because it has a multiple-choice final in class, so it will be nice not to have a final exam after the teaching is over.
Dr Hill is really enthusiastic about Russian history and the coursework for the course isn't as bad as for many History courses. There isn't a final exam, just a final quiz on the last day of class and that is a multiple-choice quiz. I'll be sure to take some more of Dr Hill's courses.
Thought this class on methodology would be really boring, but it is better than I thought it would be. He made Karl Marx almost interesting.
Prof Hill was extremely helpful in preparing for tests and assignments. He was willing to help and gave great feedback/suggestions. His lectures were interesting and his sense of humor, made the class enjoyable.
Took this class as an elective. I wasn't sure about taking a history class because people said there can be alot of writing assignments. This class has movie reviews in place of essays and a multiple choice midterm and final and was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. This course really is military history.
Great class on Cold War military history. Movie critiqs in stead of essays are good.
Cool course on cold war military history. Dr Hill gets kind of excited about the material and is a really passionate prof. Movie critique make a real change from essays and if you pay attention you can get good marks in the multiple-choice quizzes.
Great course. Dr Hill knows lots of Soviet history, so good on that. Not much on China, but then the lectures on the Falklands War were more interesting than I thought they'd be. Covered other stuff you'd expect, like Korea, Vietnam, Arab-Israeli, nuclear weapons and Cold War in Latin American and Africa.
Great course. I'm a engineer, and took this course as an elective and don't regret it. Some of the other History courses had a lot more written work and a written final exam. This course has historical movie critiques and two multiple-choice quizzes. Dr Hill seems to know a lot about the Cold War, and is enthusiastic when he gives his lectures.
Dr. Hill is a lively and passionate history professor. His M/C quizzes were tricky even though I attended every class; fortunately, he curved the quiz grades. He was explicit about his expectations for the research paper and book review. Both required extra time searching for resources on TFDL shelves/archives and/or the Military Museum Archives.
Great course for a nonmajor. The writing assignments were short and on movies, and the tests were multiple choice.
I did not find his expectations clear. His lectures were dry for the most part. His quizes were pretty straightforward. By the end of the semester, most of the class stopped showing up. Nice guy but only take this course if you can stay awake.
I have heard horror stories about HTST 300, luckily for me Dr. Hill was there to carry me through the class. He was a great prof who made his expectations clear and was always available for additional help. The courses itself was a heavy class but if you showed up he really made the lectures worthwhile. Would take again.
One of the best profs I've had, gives great lectures, and is very interested in the material that he teaches. I did go to most lectures, however there is no harm in not showing up.
Great prof. He is really in to what he teaches. Real military history. The multiple choice test at the end had some tough questions, but the assignments were straighforward.
I had heard a lot of really great things about Dr. Hill. I was pretty disappointed though. He just didn't seem into it. A lot of the lectures were documentaries and the rest was terribly boring. The assignments didn't contribute to my learning either. I don't know what's going on with him but he just seemed a bit off.
I don't know what the last review is getting at because Dr Hill is usually really passionate when he teaches. He was really helpful in getting better at the assignments. It was really good that he took only the two highest marks for the assignments towards the final grade.
While clearly passionate about the subject matter, Dr Hill teaches this class as if every person in the class has large amounts of previous WWII knowledge. Teaching style was often very difficult to follow and filled with unnecessary facts such as number of tanks in specific battles. Would not recommend this class unless passionate about WWII
I was a bit surprised by the last rating - I expected Dr Hill to give us things like stats on tanks and aircraft, and he did. He is a real specialist on WWII. You do need to come to class to do well on the final test, but if you do it is not that hard, because all of the answers were in the lectures and he graded on a curve that helped my score.
I got an A in this course. I turned up for all the classes, and got an A+ on the test. A great course with a lot of military and political history. Not much social history - this was all about military and diplomatic history. A great course.
The one good thing about Dr. Hill is he replies to emails quickly and is decently helpful in office hours. However, he is a very harsh grader and can be pompous and condescending. His lectures are also disorganized and vague. Do NOT take any course with him if you do not already have a background in military history.
He was an amazing prof. Super passionate about Russiea/ Soviet Union. If you love military history, you will love this prof. He is funny and helpful, however his MC tests are very difficult. He does curve them, however for somebody who attended every class I did not do as well as anticipated. Definitely study well and you will do amazing
He can be really hit and miss in my opinion. He loves what hes teaching, and is obviously very knowledgeable on the subject, but he is rushed, and can go slightly off topic more often than not. He's a very challenging grader, and expects most people to know everything that hes talking about. He's very funny though.
Apart from the fact that he makes the test the night before, his class is very straightforward. Having some prior knowledge is expected. His powerpoints are from 2008 and contain a lot of excess information. As long as you come to class and pay attention, his 30 question multiple choice tests are easy to ace.
Seemed a bit lazy as a prof. Marked one thing, while the TA marked everything else, and would only lecture for about 30 minutes, then have a documentary shown for the remaining 45 minutes. Papers were worth 80% of the total grade, so if you do well on papers, this is the class for you. No final, which is awesome.
Fabulous professor. Extermly knowledgeable about the subject manner but presents it in an understandable way. The two movie review assignments were great, interesting content and easy to do well if you put in the time. Tests were very straight forward and directly from lectures. Very small textbook that was hardly used 10/10
Passionate, knowledgeable, prepare to hear a lot about WWII irrespective of the topic at hand. First time HTST300 was in block week, so I think they will reduce the number of grading components for the future. Can be a tough marker but clear in what he is looking for, especially if you ask. A lot of work but enjoyable.
You must be a great writer/incredibly skilled at finding minute details within historical literature to do well. The papers must be thesis-quality if you want to succeed. The quizzes, although weighted low, were unreasonably hard. To even have a chance at doing well here, you have to have prior history knowledge. For any non-major: do not take it.
He mainly teaches via lecturing, with the slides having little to no text. Fast and efficient note-taking is vital to doing well in the course, despite lectures only being useful for the exams. I felt he could have explained citation in greater detail for the research papers. But overall a great prof, especially if you are interested in the topic.
Hill is not for everyone. He is often unorganized, but he will always find time for his students. A proper military historian, Hill expects some background military history knowledge for his courses. Unlike other history seminars he doesn't care about participation. For a 4th year seminar the reading is minimal, but he does use the book a lot.
Love/hate kind of prof. If you're into battles and that kind of stuff then there is no one better to take a military history course with. But if you want a wider perspective, then I would avoid him. Although he tends to be a bit unorganized, his tests were fair, he gives great feedback, and was very resourceful in office hours.
Hill is a wonderful prof in the history department. He's really caring and passionate about Russian and Military history and it definitely shows. History 300 was a great class to take with him. The majority of the grading is based on assignments so if you hate tests, take it with Hill
The class proved to be very easy, albiet very boring, this is a methedology class and as such can be very dry, it is required for HTST majors, however if you want to take a HTST class as an option dont take this one, there are far more interesting classes. Dr. Hill was a fair marker and a decent prof
Dr. Hill is a personable and capable professor who presents the material in an engaging and interesting manner. Work is hands-on and relevant to the practice of history. His feedback on a proposed essay outline was illuminating and crucial; if you think you know something, check again.
It is a pity that lectures ended because of Covid because Dr Hill's lectures were some of the best. Dr Hill is enthusiastic about what he teaches, and seems to know a lot too. The movie assignments were a cool way to be graded, and if you followed his instructions it wasn't difficult to get a good grade. The final was easy if you'd been to class.
I did this class with Dr Hill last summer. There weren't any set lecture times, but Dr Hill was available a lot on Zoom. He gave us plenty of study materials and the assessment was fair and varied. I'm going to do HTST485 World War II with him this Fall.
I'm doing Russian history with Doctor Hill at this time, and for an online class it is not bad. He is giving us a lot of material to work through, with no set class times and weekly quizzes. There are some choices for the writing assignment that you do. I like the fact that I can do most of the work when I want to. So far I'd recommend him.
I'm doing this course right now because I needed to do some more courses over the summer, and it is better than I thought it would be. Dr Hill seems to care about his students and there are different types of assessment that makes it more interesting. His weekly quizzes aren't that hard if you do the work :)
I am an engineering student and I suck at writing papers, that's just me. I am taking HTST485 as my complimentary class. Professor Hill is very reasonable and considerate, he truly cares about his students! If you are good at writing, this will be an easy A for you. He is so good that I am giving him a five even I barely passed!
Lectures were entertaining and fun to listen to. He talks very quickly so it is a little hard to keep up sometimes. Grading on assignments was very fair. Did require a little bit of effort but was a fairly easy class overall.
Wasn't sure about taking this course, but Dr Hill seems to really know his stuff and is a passionate prof. He doesn't make everyone give long presentations like in lots of the seminars and his enthusiasm for the course helps you get through nearly a nearly three hour seminar!
I learned a lot about Russia in this course, and it was good that Dr Hill talked about events all the way to the war in Ukraine that is still going on. Dr Hill seems to really care about his students. He was happy to give me an extension on my essay when I asked him.
Very interesting and fun class. He was a great lecturer and made the material easy to understand. He gives clear grading criteria on the course outline too about the assignments.
This was an interesting online course with clear instructions for the assignments. Even if you did badly on an assignment you could do another one to improve your grade.
Took this Block Week course with Dr Hill this Fall. He is a very enthusiastic prof who knows his stuff on WWII. His fill in the blanks quizzes were easy if you attended class, but the multiple choice final quiz was brutal!
My experience in Professor Hill's class was quite enjoyable. He is well versed in his lecture material and adds in valuable information when needed. The assignments and quizzes were straightforward and easy. Professor Hill himself is a kind and funny man and was always willing to help us. I hope I get the chance to take one of his classes again.
Hill is a caring professor who genuinely wants his students to succeed. The course had a simple outline; two papers and one small quiz, with clear grading criteria. He was always available for questions and was so understanding. As someone who is not a history major, I found his class to be great compared to the other history classes I have taken.
He was a great presenter, and it was fun to listen to his lectures. He clearly knows what he is talking about and is passionate about the subjects he teaches. He only had four assessments for this class and quizzes only made up 20% (But they're SUPER easy if you go to class). His expectations on essays are reasonable, and he's a fair marker.
I personally made a big mistake on my essay, but he promptly bumped up my grade when I explained where I went wrong and why. His expectations seem to be mostly reasonable, but where he shines are his lectures. Made a 9:00 class something that I was actually disappointed to miss! Overall a good professor.
I took HTST 412 and HTST 545 with Dr. Hill during the 2024-2025 school year. I found that he spoke very quickly, and I often struggled to keep up while taking notes, and his grading was definitely harsher than other history professors. However, he is incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and approachable. Would recommend his courses!
