By far the best class I've taken in Berkeley. Super organized and clear lecture. He shows you exactly what to do and what he expects. Easy midterms. Harder final but definitely doable.

Paulin is a very good math professor. He explains things step by step but he usually goes by the book so if you learn well independently then you will be good just reading the book. Having a great GSI also helped and he is also very helpful in his office hours. Would recommend him!

Quizzes every Friday along with homework due, but he tells the GSIs to go a little easy on us and be helpful during discussion! His lectures are pretty clear, except for the last bit when he goes into super difficult stuff for the last 15 minutes of most classes. Overall a great prof! Welcomes questions in class & walks around to help sometimes.

Paulin was a great lecturer. He always explained the concepts, and posted all his notes online, which was really helpful when i couldn't go to class. Midterms were fairly easy. The final was a bit more challenging, but not impossible if you had studied all the material.

The lectures were some of the best I've had at Berkeley. You need to pay attention but each lecture is well organized and very clear. Tests were difficult but fair so if you know the material well, you'll do just fine

Great professor, super organized notes and follows the syllabus exactly. He is great at explaining difficult concepts but do not test them on tests, which is good. Overall a wonderful professor and make me really like math.

The class is very fast-paced in topics, and Paulin doesn't really help with his large homework sets every week, along with the weekly quizzes. The exams are tough too. However, he does upload his lecture notes, so attending lecture isn't crucial, and discussions weren't mandatory either (except for when you had quizzes and homework to submit).

He is one of the best professors I've had so far. His lectures are very clear and well-organized. I do have to say that sometimes he made certain topics look more complicated than what they really were. However, a clearer explanation could be found in the book. Other than that I think he's a great professor.

Dr. Paulin is an exceptional maths lecturer. He takes his job as an educator very seriously, and is very caring toward his students. He has office hours two hours a day, five days a week! His grading is fair, and the weekly quizzes and mandatory homework are a godsend. Really helps cushion the grade. Curves for midterms and final are fair.

Dr. Paulin is an amazing professor! I was very lucky to be able to take his class. I have never seen any other professor as caring and loving as him. Has extensive office hours and grades fairly. The curves usually work in your favor. If you need to take math, TAKE HIS CLASS.

Took this class to brush up on my calculus during my first semester here at Cal. Professor Paulin gives long problem sets, but they really are similar to his exams. Great lecturer, a lot of office hours, and just a cool guy overall. His exams are really similar to the practice exams he gives, so REALLY study those. 10/10 would recommend.

This class was pretty difficult but manageable if you study a lot. I did not study as much as I should have and that was my fault. He did all he could to help and is a teacher i would recommend.

Lecture is where its at. Paulin is a great teacher. If it is webcasted, you might not even have to go to lecture since the webcasted version is just the same if not better. He makes math se simpler to what is described in the textbook.

Paulin was honestly one of my favorite professors here. He's hilarious and really clear in all his explanations. His midterms are pretty fair and his grading style (he curves the entire class to the historical average) is great. He also posts practice midterms which are very very similar to the exams - he also goes over the answers very clearly

Paulin helped get me through my last semester of math. The content is quite difficult but he explains it in the most straightforward way. Lots of homework but not graded closely. Curve is very generous (thought I was going to fail but ended up passing). If you can, wait to take 16B with Paulin. He's by far the best math professor I've had at Cal.

Hands down the best math professor I have ever had! I was already a math person, but after taking his class, I enjoyed calculus even more. His lectures are amazing and he explains all the concepts well. He also posts lots of practice tests before the midterms/final so you'll be more than prepared. Professor Paulin is a good lecturer and really cares for his students. My problem with him is that he gave really easy midterms so there was basically no curve and the grading scale that he used to grade the midterms was ridiculousto say the least (I.e forgetting a negative sign or a number meant that you loss 20% of the credit for the problem).

Paulin was a wonderful professor. He teaches very well and really knows how to explain difficult concepts. I found the class to be relatively easy, however, I did very well in both high school Calc AB and BC (and 16A). Also, it was very helpful that this class was recorded! Midterms and the final are EXTREMELY similar to the practice exams!

Loved taking 16B with Paulin. He is always very prepared for lectures and makes himself accessible to answer questions by having office hours every day! The course can be challenging if you haven't done a lot of math before, but Paulin makes it seem managable. Take 16 with Paulin if you can!

DOESN't make you understand theory or proof and gives you exactly what you need to know/use (formulas). Upfront about what content he will test you on. Also, his OFFICE HOURS ARE EVERYTHING. He'll go through tricks/subtleties that he will put on exam.

Paulin is an awesome teacher and is super patient. His lectures were incredibly straight-forward and he made very difficult topics seem easy. He was awesome and made me sad that I'm done with calc.

It may have helped that I had taken his 16a class which didn't end as well, but he takes into account when people go to his office hours, which I strongly recommend because he gives you hints to upcoming midterms and finals. It is important to go to his lecture ( tho he puts them online) because when he gives examples he will go around to help you.

Paulin is an incredible professor and lecturer. He assigns hw which is reasonable. The first midterm was really difficult, the second midterm was pretty easy, and the final was fairly easy as well. You're final grade is dependent on how you compare to the other students no matter how easy/diff the tests were. Overall I'd reccomen -take his class!!

Very chill and nice guy, and his office hours are pretty helpful. His homeworks are pretty lengthy but some of the harder problems definitely mirror ones on the exams. MAD clutch that he posts practice exams, and they are def similar to the ones he gives. I have no other college math profs to compare him to yet, but overall he was pretty solid.

I started this class expecting to hate it, and even though it was challenging Professor Paulin helped me actually enjoy a math class! The lectures are all webcast which is great if you miss one, and he has so many office hours! The effort he puts into teaching really shows how much he cares about the students.

An awesome professor who makes Linear Algebra incredibly interesting. Go to his office hours! He is very helpful and has a cool personality. He can be condescending at times, but at the end of the day teaches you the subject matter well. oh, and his voice is heavenly.

Paulin is a clear lecturer who explains topics well in a logical and moderately interesting way. His tests were fair but somewhat computation heavy. The main problem I have with his teaching was that homework was entirely out of the textbook and mostly computation, and so I had to review the abstract concepts by myself to really get them.

A very good prof that explains concepts clearly and also has great lecture layout (writes on his iPad, posts the notes online, and also apparently sometimes makes videos of lectures?). His homework for this class was killer but the exams were very very fair and tested your understanding of lecture material, nothing tricky. Would take again!

I decided to retake Calculus 1 & 2, and Paulin has made it an amazing experience. He is an amazing lecturer who goes above and beyond to provide his students with learning resources. He also records review videos and provides a few practice midterms before each exam. If you take your time to understand his practice midterms, you will do just fine.

Paulin is the best math professor I've had so far. His lectures are really good and his exams (while making up 80% of your grade) were very fair.

As someone that dislikes math, Paulin made me appreciate and love it. Lectures are all very well prepared and succinct--attendance is not mandatory bc he posts his videos online. I would def recommend going anyway though if not just to hear him talk about "mind melting algebra." Keep up with workload, and you'll be fine! Very rewarding experience!

Personally, I didn't learn from his teaching style. However, he does follow the book. My only gripe is that he teaches the hardest concept for M2 and the Final differently than the book. He "simplifies" it, but then adds a twist on the tests. Aside from that, he was a very fair test maker. The homework wasn't too difficult.

Paulin is one of the best professor's I have had at Berkeley. It was an extremely large class, but he did an amazing job in lectures. I never went to office hours (I did adjunct instead, would highly recommend) but I heard he was very helpful in office hours. In his in class problems, he would give really good feedback if you got the chance to talk

Honestly learning from him is a privilege considering how much work he puts into lecturing succinctly and how much he cares about how his students do. I don't particularly love math but despite the slightly tricky exams I felt like I'd actually LEARNED from his class. Plus very funny and very nice English accent.

The most resourceful, accessible and caring professor at Cal. His lecture videos are so good. I have relied on his lecture videos for 1A,1B and Math 54.

Paulin has to be the best math prof there is in Berkeley. Even though I took 1B with him, he was more than willing to help me with me 53 work in the following semester. OH 5 times a week makes him really accessible to students, and he loves to make his explanations as simple and intuitive as possible.

Knows his stuff, very clear slides during lectures, he does examples from scratch instead of reading off the computer.

SO MANY OFFICE HOURS (which he's super helpful during). Fun lecturer who genuinely seems to love being there. Quite a bit of homework but took maybe 3 hours per week. Releases three practice tests per exam, and the exam follows the format of the practice tests closely. Fair exams and fair grading, and he held three review sessions during dead week.

I will say, Paulin is a great professor. I honestly think he's great at what he does; but if you've never done calc before, it's not going to be an easy class. Period. I've never had a grade this low and in my honest opinion it's because Paulin is not great at teaching material from a completely clean slate. He is great though.

If you have the chance to take Paulin's class, do it. His lectures are engaging even for someone who has taken the class before in high school. He teaches the material clearly and make sure everyone understands before moving on in lecture. His website has many great resources.

I never understood calculus in high school. I could pass the AP tests, sure, but I never UNDERSTOOD it. Paulin changed that. He made calculus meaningful, not just a game of how well do I memorize the derivative or integral of this trig function (which is how AP Calc AB/BC felt to me). He was caring & fair. There's plenty of support offered, too.

If your GSI is a tough grader, you won't get a good grade unless there's minimal errors on the test. Paulin is amazing but you should have prior calculus experience. He offers office hours everyday so make sure to attend them or join an SLC study group.

Paulin is a fantastic UC Berkeley professor, meaning he is a phenomenal professor in every right. His midterms and finals are fairly hard but if you understand the practice exam content you will do fine on all of them. Discussions have weekly quizzes and homework. If you want to bring your Calculus to college level, do it here.

It's who you are in times of difficulty that defines your leadership. Paulin cares about his students, both their wellbeing and their education. Throughout the COVID crisis, Paulin was a steady teacher who did his best to accommodate his students while still providing a quality learning experience. I highly recommend him as a teacher.

I had Professor Paulin for a whole year - Math 1A, then 1B. Truly the best introduction to university mathematics. Ive heard that math at Cal can be absolutely horrific, but Professor Paulin made it the complete opposite of that. If you have the opportunity to take his class, do it! You wont regret it. He cares so much for his students.

Professor Paulin is one of the most caring and intelligent instructors Cal has to offer - and he definitely lives up to the hype. Lectures are clear with beautiful PDF notes, concepts are explained in an intuitive and applicable way, and the exams are straightforward but not *easy*. Great office hours, A++ accent and really accommodating on Zoom.

This class is extremely time consuming and difficult. Watching the lectures alone will not give you enough information to pass. You need to put a lot of extra work to be able to do well on the exams. He is a very good lecturer however teaches you the bare minimum and you have to teach yourself the rest.

The hype is real. I literally took Math 1A over the summer just to get into Paulin's 1B class and it 100% paid off, because this is the most well-structured, well-supported and incredibly taught calculus course I could've asked for. Challenging exams, but tons of practice material, truly amazing project-work and a sensational British accent.

His exams are designed to test all the intricate subtleties of concepts- he makes them challenging, but it trains you to develop complete fluency in the material. Lectures are well organized, coherent, and replete with helpful examples, practice material. Unfortunately, grading criteria are ambiguous and you never truly know your academic standing.

Took this class in Fall 2019. For my calc background got a 5 on BC and 4 on AB in high school. Needless to say, he is by far the BEST professor I've had. His lectures are very clear and he instilled in me an appreciation for College math and he really filled in the holes I had in my understanding. The Practice MTs are representative of the exams.

Best prof I've had at Berkeley. Take Paulin's class if you can! Not an easy course but he really cares and makes a huge effort to make the material accessible. Professor Paulin is amazing. I went to at least 3 of his office hours, and all of them had helped me gain a better understanding of various concepts (his office hours were SUPER beneficial for the projects he had assigned). Tip: take his practice exams because they're very similar to the actual exams! The class isn't easy, so you gotta work for it.

Excellent lectures and discussion sections. Only complaints are the projects and the difficulty of exams but those were certainly manageable.

Professor Paulin was my favorite professor and he did an amazing job accommodating everyone considering having to teach online. I really like his teaching style and his lectures were so fun to sit through. The math itself isn't too bad but his class requires you to practice on your own because he doesn't assign too much homework. Highly recommend!

By no means an easy class; exams were on the harder side and needed office hours to supplement my studying. I didn't particularly like his projects since a good chunk of office hours (60-70%ish) were dedicated just for those and not other conceptual reviews. However, professor Paulin had clear expectations and was pretty generous in his grading.

Paulin was really helpful and accessible if one couldn't always make the live lectures. He was super clear about explaining every process and genuinely cares about his students' success. It is a hard class and you will have to work for your grade but I would definitely take him again.

Possibly the most organized professor ever! Paulin was very quick and efficient when providing feedback and giving pointers. The instructors and GSIs were incredibly supportive and caring. Although the grading scale wasn't finalized till the last few weeks, many resources were available. Make sure to go to OH and ask for help! :)

A hard class but a good professor. Definitely recommend going to discussions as the worksheets helped a lot. Lectures were really valuable and well organized. Homework was graded for completion and most of your grade comes form projects/tests. A really nice guy overall but certainly a class you have to work hard at.

Paulin is a marvelous lecturer. With nothing but himself and iPad, he makes calculus extremely engaging. He is absurdly accessible outside of class (holds office hours every day). His tests are very difficult, but his lectures and homework will help guide you, and he provides you with 3 prior exams to prep.

Paulin is great! I had him for Math 1B in Fall 2020 and he's amazing. I came into college not wanting anything to do with math, but this class honestly inspired me to learn a lot more of it. Tests are fair and he adequately prepares you for them with section worksheets and practice exams, and he's also a really understanding and chill guy

Paulin was a great professor and super caring for the students. His tests were doable, and if you do enough of the practice exams and the textbook problems, you will have no problem with the class. The weekly projects can be a bit difficult, but if you work with a group, you'll be fine. He lowered the grade bins at the end of the semester.

Paulin is an incredibly engaging lecturer, and he has a lot of heart. That being said this class is HARD, and you are really expected to work for your grade. Prepare for weekly homeworks and projects and difficult exams. That being said, that's to be expected for a calc course, and Paulin makes the experience as positive as possible.

Professor Paulin might be the best professor I ever have at Berkeley. He is extremely caring of his students and did a lot of things to relieve the burden of online learning. Highly recommend taking Math 1B: show up to section, do the worksheets, take Math 98, watch lectures, and you should get an A in the class (coming from someone who isn't STEM)

Understanding and grades fairly. Didn't know my exact grade until the end of the year, but Paulin was really kind with the grade bins. Exams are pretty tough, but there is a lot of required homework to prepare for it. Definitely helps to attend lecture live. I skipped Math 1A and I struggled a lot in this class, but GSI office hours saved my grade!

Paulin was a great professor who taught concepts very well. I recommend going to office hours (both his and the GSIs'), doing the practice exams, and watching both the synchronous and asynchronous videos if you're having trouble with a concept.

The class is tough mainly since I joined in from Math 16A so if you want to take this class definitely take Math 1B. Grade bins are very generous, if you get a 50% on a test do not worry it is still a C based on his bins. Great lecturer but do go to class and watch review videos they are what helps the most on exams!

Professor Paulin had very generous bins and interesting projects as well as relevant homework problems. He was also very considerate of outside circumstances that would affect our test-taking ability including the pandemic and 2020 presidential election. His lectures were clear and covered many important concepts.

Professor Paulin is easily my favorite professor in my 2 years at Berkeley. He gives great lectures, and is able to make the advanced material feel very digestible. He wants you to succeed and gives you the tools to do so. Workload is middle of the road, significant, but not bad especially compared to other Berkeley STEM courses.

Although Math 1B is difficult, having Paulin as your professor makes the experience much better. His lectures are worth going to, as he breaks down the concepts very well. His exams are very fair as well, and you'll always be well prepared for them if you do all his practice exams.

Professor Paulin is the best professor I have ever encountered. He truly raises the standard. He is extremely organized and uploads all notes/entire lectures online beforehand. He is sooo extremely patient and his teaching style is very clear and intuitive. He holds one of the most phenomenal office hours.

Homework/midterms are very reasonable and fair. They arent easy but expectations are clear and practice midterms are so reflective that if someone studies them truly and conceptually (not that they understand his his solutions but they can explain and reproduce the chain of logic that went into each question), there will get an A. Also, go to OH!!

Prof Paulin is one of the best math professors I've had so far. What impressed me the most about him was his ability to effectively teach the course material even though lectures were over Zoom; everything was clear and logical, and he also taught with enthusiasm. Moreover, he had daily in person Office Hours which just shows his dedication.

Lectures are solid, and he grades pretty leniently. He's very knowledgeable in office hours and the homework assignments are fair and not that long. Expect an easy quiz every week in discussion.

Amazing professor, has office hours every day and is super flexible based on level of understanding. Lectures are the general concept with a couple broad examples, explained spectacularly and is engaging, and true understanding comes from textbook skimming and homework. Tests are hard but he gives excellent practice tests from previous semesters.

Paulin is an incredibly enthusiastic lecturer, which makes digesting lots of abstract concepts far easier than having a super monotonous professor. He is incredibly knowledgeable about everything in the course, and he is very accessible in office hours. Would 10/10 recommend taking any class Paulin is teaching.

Lectures were well thought out and brought together many concepts. Shows multiple ways of doing something and allows you to do whichever makes the most sense to you. If you want to be pushed he definitely allows that with parts of his lectures that allow for deeper thinking. Good GSI was key to unlocking concepts for me.

This class was a breath of fresh air. His lectures are mildly abstract, but they eventually make sense and are useful after digging deeper into the homework/examples and putting the pieces together. Points for a cool accent and good music taste. He is very accessible, supportive, and communicative. I always feel seen and valid in his class.

Took Math1B in Fall 2021 and now Math54. A limit on characters here otherwise I'd fully describe the genius he is. Structured lectures, beautiful notes, nice practice exams but above all a great human being. Cares about students. Wont forget our conversations on the steps of Wheeler or his OFFICE HOURS-DONT MISS THEM. Inspired me to LOVE math.

Great professor, explained things very well and was really easy to follow. Made hard concepts understandable. Three homeworks a week due at the end of the week and one weekly quiz. The exams are difficult but fair and he provides free links to the textbook. He really cares about his students and what he teaches. Would highly recommend.

Great lecturer with really good material assisted by a good linear algebra textbook and not so good Diff Eq. textbook. Enjoyed the class and if you do the practice exams and understand the material to a decent extent, you will do good in the class! One of the best to teach at Berkeley hands down.

Paulin's lectures are amazing, he is able to make abstract concepts seem very easy to understand. The homework isn't too long, and does a good job of complementing the lectures with a wide variety of problems. He is very organized and his website will give you all the info you need, including recorded lecture videos which are very helpful.

Paulin's lectures tended to be more abstract and sometimes hard to follow, but overall he's a great teacher and genuine guy. The class is exam heavy (final is 40+% of grade), but very lenient in terms of grading/quiz drops/clobbering. Exams were straightforward and just like the practices given.

His linear algebra section was good, but the differential equations parts sucked. I had an A before the final and the final knocked it down to a B+. Still, I would take his class again.

Everyone has complained about Paulin not living up to the hype but TBH for me he did. The Math 1B course is SUPER well organized on his website. Genuinely a funny, caring guy that actually enjoys math and teaching. I appreciated the songs he plays before every lecture starts and his music taste.

Yeah, he lives up to the hype. Outline of lecture is very well done and taking notes is easy (He pretty much writes the notes with you). Gives 4 practice midterms from previous semesters before each test which is really helpful, along with solutions. My final got lost and he just replaced it with my best midterm.

Prof. Paulin was a great professor, always giving us clear expectations even during the GSI strike. His provided online instructional videos and other resources on his website were really useful. Most assignments feel like they have a purpose, which is nice for a math class.

Really great professor. Lectures can be long so he gives one short break each class. Clearly explains the content presented, even when the content given is challenging. Very caring of students. Practice midterms are extremely similar to the actual midterm, making it much easier to study. Definitely one of the best professors out there.

Such a good professor for Math 1B!! This class was definitely difficult but Professor Paulin was a great lecturer. He worked hard to support us during the GSI strikes. Study hard for the 1st midterm, this class is very test heavy.

Although I never attended lecture past the second week, I will say Paulin is a kind and respectful professor in person and through email, as well as is extremely generous with exam grading. Prof Paulin is so detailed in his lectures and coverage of material: he outlines assumptions clearly and sequentially. Additionally, Prof Paulin was so understanding about the disruptions that occurred during the strike and was consistently clear and understanding in his accommodations and responses to the disruption.

Paulin's the best professor I've had at Cal. Lectures are awesome, he's really organized, explains concepts well & his OH is incredibly helpful (make sure to attend!). He's also great to talk to, really understanding & was so considerate during COVID (& during the strike too). I still understand & remember the topics he taught a year ago.

Paulin is a great math professor and made the class really enjoyable. Math is the most difficult subject that I have taken and wish I could've figured it out but alas calculus is hard. He was really nice and supportive towards all his students. Recommend office hours and truly studying for his exams. Confident you can a better grade than me.

Professor Paulin is an amazing lecturer and person. He held office hours Monday-Friday basically every week and provided 4 practice exams for each midterm. He was also extremely accommodating during the strike and made it clear that he cares very much about his students. 10/10 would recommend. I could not have asked for a better math professor.

One of the most caring professors out there, he made those choices in grading that maximized our scores and alleviated our concerns. In terms of pedagogy, Professor Paulin's lectures are clear, systematic and concise (sick beats at the start of lecture too). Projects can get tricky, but help is available. Excellent prof, lives up to the hype.

The best math teacher I've ever had, period. Made those 8 am lectures very enjoyable and was open about the changes in grading logistics (cuz of the GSI strike). Saying this as a guy who did NOT understand the material, Professor Paulin was absolutely phenomenal. Incredibly accessible both in terms of content and help, and very skilled at teaching. Like others have said, during the Fall '22 strike he was accommodating with the grading changes and showed that he clearly cares about his students' well being.

Professor Paulin is by far one of the best math professors at Berkeley. His lectures are very structured and his office hours were absolute gpa savers especially for the projects. He has been very accommodating for the GSI strike by shifting the grade boundaries to benefit the entire class. 10/10 would take any future courses he teaches.

While Math 1B isn't an easy class, and it requires a lot of work, but Professor Paulin is one of the best professors you could get to teach you. Paulin is the best. Such a great guy and awesome British accent. Took a sec to get used to his lecture style but came to love it and all his "deep algebraic facts." Feel like I learned a lot and came out with a strong Calculus foundation. Would highly recommend taking classes like 1B and 54 with him if you can. Makes the experience much better.

Clear explainer (moved fast in 1B, but made hard concepts understandable), his notes are legible, he has pre-recorded videos for every topic if you missed the lecture, and tells you what the structure of his exams will be. Very accomodating during strike. Don't think I'll ever get a better math prof at Cal, & am literally taking him again next sem.

Professor Paulin is a very nice person in general and is genuinely passionate about the subject he teaches. He's very accessible outside of class in his office hours, and he's responsive to emails. He has recordings for his lectures, but going in person and asking questions helped a lot.

Alexander Paulin has my HEART. He wrote his textbook to go along with his lectures because all others suck. He ensures his students understands the material and THEN goes into specifics. No proofs as the explanation of how. Explains In a way that you ACTUALLY learn. He even records separate explanation videos, not just a recording of his lectures.

Considering that this was the first time Math 56 was taught, Paulin did a decent job. Many of my issues with the class stem from it being new, but I'm sure these issues will be improved upon when it's taught next. My only real complaint is that the lectures didn't help me much. Some of the projects are really interesting.

Take Math 1 as it goes over all the precalculus you need to know for 1A or 10A. Gives a really good refresher. Also, this class is only 7.5 weeks so its really fast but helpful nonetheless. I highly recommend taking this before Math 1a or 10a. Paulin is great at lecturing and super accessible outside of class.

This is my favorite math class I've taken to date, because of Paulin! I liked how he emphasized learning concepts before algorithms and also emphasized looking at problems from multiple perspectives. He made the material easy to remember, and also beautiful. Exams are fair if you go to lecture, take homework seriously, and do the practices.

Best teacher I've ever had. Incredible lectures, work is pretty light for a STEM class. Lays out concepts in a very comprehendible manner. Frequently hosts office hours. Exams are very similar to in class examples and practice exams. As long as you go to class and discussion and do the work, its a pretty easy class and give a great math foundation.

Really great professor and class! I enjoyed tuning into the lectures as they are presented clearly while also going in-depth. In addition, the work felt pretty manageable and I was rarely stressed/overworked. If you consider taking this class with Paulin, I'd say you are in very good hands.

I love Professor Paulin- he is the best and I think for the first time I love doing math since I can make quick connections and good solid understanding from his lectures ~ he is great and a chill dude that is also relatively good communicating with everyone. Take math with him! He changed me to be good at math and so did my GSI- props to both!

A truly exceptional professor and course experience. Professor Paulin designs the course with handpicked homework problems and examples in both lecture and discussion worksheets that truly cover the breadth of course content. I also really like how willing he is to help students improve. Incredible and supportive GSIs as well, always ready to help.

Paulin was a solid professor with good teaching style and ability. Grade is 80% exams (2x20 midterms, 40 final) so prepare more than I did. Lots of OH from GSIs and Paulin, which I should've used. His supplemental videos were likely useful too. Would recommend, but make sure to get ahead and stay ahead, work for understanding, and utilize OH.

Final is 40%, midterms are 20% each which means the course is super exam heavy. Practice exams, worksheets, past quizzes, are plentiful so put the work in and you should get a good score. Try to anticipate exam questions from the practice ones as they are VERY similar and prepare you VERY WELL. Recordings of lectures are available and pretty neat.

Very test heavy. The exams might seem hard at first but aim for the partial credit and should get a good grade.

Alex is the best professor I have had at Berkeley, not only is he an amazing teacher but he is caring and very thoughtful of the students in his class. I have learned the most from the two classes I have taken with him and wish I could take more.

People say great things about Professor Paulin, and he really does deserve all the praise he gets. His website has everything you could ever need on it, and his grading system feels very fair. He's an entertaining lecturer while still teaching you what you need to know, and his last lecture lets you truly appreciate the beauty of math.

Tests are difficult but he's aware of that and grades accordingly. Study, attend lectures or watch the video lectures, do homework and you'll be good.

Paulin has probably the best lectures of all professors. He breaks down difficult content and has VERY good notes that are followable. Go to every lecture, do all the homework, and read the textbook and I guarantee you'll get a good grade. He also curves in case his exams are too difficult and he sees that many struggled. I would recommend consulting them even if you are taking this class with other profs. He gives 2 practice tests before each exam and they are very representative of the actual test.

Great professor, good at explaining concepts in lecture (but you probably need a base knowledge of the topics beforehand to fully grasp his teachings). Office hours are super helpful, even when busy, and some GSIs are really great.

Great lectures. The formatting on his iPad displayed on the projector makes understanding the content much easier. Projects can be difficult; study partners can be very helpful. Go to lecture or else you'd miss out on the GOAT.

Amazing professor. Lectures are incredibly informative and helpful. Super entertaining (great voice too). Breaks down concepts to their basic function (homeworks/tests are where you have to apply it to harder problems). Exams are tough but doable if you study. Lenient grader, curves exams, and the quizzes are pretty easy. 100% recommend him for 1A.

Paulin's lectures felt very engaging and for the most part easy to follow. Sometimes I would be a bit confused but just one ask of clarification and it fits. Grading is very lenient, especially in exams, so this class allows you to focus more on understanding than maintaining a grade. He's very friendly and easy to talk to regarding the course.

Extremely good professor, explains topics in a rudimentary way so that you fully understand the topic. Tests are critical thinking and no calculator, but very very similar to the three practice exams he gives out so make sure you fully finish those. Homework is also helpful and there is either one project or quiz every week.

I would strongly suggest taking the practice exams again and again, as well as doing all of the homework thoroughly. If you make sure to understand these practice problems, you will do well. Professor Paulin is understanding, clear, and supportive. His expectations are straightforward, and he makes lectures enjoyable. I highly enjoyed this course.

Great lecturer who breaks down complicated concepts into their fundamental principles. He's quite funny as well. His lecture examples are much easier than what's on the midterms and finals, but if you just do the practice exams, you will be fine as the real exams are almost identical to the practice ones.

A clearly proficient instructor who cares a lot about his students despite the massive class sizes. Lectures covered the baseline of concepts, with a few examples ingrained within. However, the degree to which you succeed in this class depends on the extra work and dedication you put in outside of class. Grade will suffer due to lack of effort.

He's a great guy and does a good job setting the baseline but the jump in difficulty from the homework/quizzes to the midterms and finals is HUGE. If I hadn't come into this class with prior calculus experience I would've had a much harder time. There's also a curve at the end. He doesn't tell you your grade in the class until the end.

Not gonna lie, if you didn't take calc in high school or are just overall not the best at math, the exams for this class will rock your shit. However, Paulin is INCREDIBLY lenient with grading. Literally got a raw score of around 65% for every test but still ended with a B. My advice is to just do your best and really understand the material.

Paulin is a great lecturer who breaks down all the concepts really well and is always willing to answer questions. Definitely requires a lot of self-studying though because the tests are harder than what he teaches, so go highly recommend going to his office hours and doing the practice tests over and over.

going into math1a, i was terrified because i had almost no calc experience but professor paulin truly wants you to get an A in this class. make sure you do all the practice tests cause the exams are almost identical to them. he gives out a lot of partial credit and his office hours are very helpful. he's also hilarious and such a fun lecturer!!

Paulin is great and all of his teaching is well-structured, but his projects are pretty hard and for most of the time even GSIs have no idea about those projects, which are something lower your grade even more than midterms and finals. His exams are fair and do the practice exams, they are helpful.

He is quite good at lecturing to introduce you to content, but actually using your lecture notes to do homework and projects is a reach. The exams are difficult, but he curves them and he also provides you practice exams that are word-for-word the same problems. My only grievance is that the most difficult topics are saved for last before midterms.

I was recommended by his actual student to watch 16a videos. he singlehandedly taught me everything from limits to areas between curves, it was unbelievable how he simplified calculus. i went thru all his exams & material. this funny british guy is a godsent, got an A in my class.

love paulinnn. I was hesitant about enrolling in math 1b bc I've heard from previous students who took this course (with a diff prof.) that it was terrible and very difficult, but Paulin made it easy to understand. if you want to get the most out of the class, attend slc topic reviews!

I took 1A and 1B with Paulin and I really loved his teaching style. He's very chill about lecture attendance and there are a lot of available drops (homeworks, quizzes, etc) for if you have unavoidable life stuff come up. He teaches material very sequentially and methodically which I appreciated and his exams were totally reasonable!

Took math 1A with Paulin last semester and taking Math 1B with him now. One of the best professors Ive ever had at Berkeley. Came into Math 1A with no calculus experience and struggled, but he helped me understand it and get caught up to other students with no judgment at all. Definitely take advantage of his and GSI office hours! Hes amazing :)

As someone who hasn't been strong in math from the start, I found the quizzes and homework pretty manageable (got multiples 100), but the exams were much harder. Thankfully the curve helped. He explains concepts well, his videos and notes are really clear, but what we covered in class didn't always align with what was on the midterm and final.

Good at explaining things conceptually. His practice exams are very similar to his actual exams.

So glad my first and last math professor at Cal was Paulin. I took him for the 1 series and was absolutely terrified as I'm not the best at math, but his lecture videos are so clear and he really walks you through each topic. Practice exams are mostly similar to exams. Go to lectures, throughly understand homework, you'll be just fine.

This class is hard, but Paulin is amazing, and doing the practice exams is the key to getting a good grade

LOVE PAULIN MY IDOL. had him two semesters wish he was teaching more classes. lectures are great he records concise lectures for online watch if you miss lecture or want to rewatch. quizzes every other week reasonable. projects every other week on things you don't need to know for tests. tests are hard tho. go to his lectures in person tho

Very solid teacher, and lectures are very clear. There is a bit of a difficulty gap between the HW, quizzes, and exams; expect to do some outside review to prepare for midterms and finals. Has an incredibly generous curve at the end of the semester. Yay I love paulin

Took him for 1A and 1B. As someone not very adverse to math, Paulin has very insightful lectures, and they are easy to follow. He has a lenient grading system, but expect to put in work, study, and ask questions. Tests contain extra stuff he doesn't go over in lecture, but not impossible to learn. Advice: practice the practice exams and go to OH.

Paulin was an AMAZING professor. I struggled with calculus in high school but entering college, I really understood calculus concepts in his class. I managed to get an A for 1A and A+ for 1B. Really watch the lectures whether in-person or online. Do the homework! Most of the quizzes are like homework questions and exam questions are similar.

Go to his office hours! He genuinely wants his students to do well and explains the material in a way that is easy to grasp for students who have never seen the material before. He will also go more in depth about concepts in his office hours, he made me appreciate math as someone who has never liked mathematics before.

Professor Paulin is the man! An amazing person who genuinely wants his students to succeed in his class. The course is challenging without a doubt, and I would at least recommend trying to get some exposure to calculus before taking this class. I'd say that understanding the practice tests thoroughly will put you in good shape.

Proffesor Paulin is a great proffesor, although, like many others said I would agree that the jump on difficulty is huge from lectures to homework and test. Make sure you understand how to do each and every step for the practice exams, it is very similarly structured to the real test, in which only one question is usually altered to be challenging.

1 homework assignment a week and one project every two weeks, along with a quiz every alternating week that there wasn't a project. The projects weren't that tough and the quizzes weren't bad as long as you were up to date on the lectures. All lectures were recorded, and tests given were similar to practice tests. STUDY THE PRACTICE TESTS.

Paulin is very organized and knows how to get students to understand the complicated material. His grading policies are fairly generous and he is willing to work with you. If you can take any math with him, do it. If you can't, his lectures and notes are posted on his website for anyone to use.

Took him again for Math 1b. The same thing; he's caring and a great lecturer. His exams are very fair, and he's a great choice!

Although I only get a B for Math 1A, Professor Paulin taught so well and thus I took his Math 1B the next semester. Everyone likes him and his organization of lectures (including recorded lectures and lecture notes), but the tests are reasonably challenging.

Professor Paulin is truly one of my favorite professors at Cal. He cares for his students like no other. His lectures are straightforward and clear. He is accessible outside of class, understanding of inconveniences, holds many office hours, and is very inspirational to his students. There is not much work, and attendance is not mandatory.

Professor Paulin is absolutely amazing; genuinely one of the best professor's I have ever had. Lectures are straightforward and organized. If you don't understand something, GO TO office hours. He is so helpful and will make sure you understand. If you took AP Calc in high school this class is an absolute breeze. If not, still very manageable.

The best professor I've had at Berkeley. As a someone who wasn't strong in math, Professor Paulin helped me understand all of the content that I would encounter in future math classes. He presented math in a concrete and accessible way, even the hard topics. I would highly recommend Professor Paulin to anyone.

Linear algebra is awesome and Paulin is awesome. He is brilliant at explaining concepts in lecture, and really instills his passion for math in all of his students. Fair grading, awesome GSIs, etc. Definitely my highest workload course this semester but it was totally worth it.

Paulin is a fantastic professor who made concepts and topics of this class easy to grasp. Attendance is not mandatory and he uploads lectures. The projects and HWs are not bad (especially if you go to office hours) and the exams are very reasonable if you do the practice exams. The GSIs were also incredible (shoutout Abi) and provided much help.
