Alex is a great proff! He teaches the concepts in a clear way and his tests are straightforward. Reading the textbook helps a lot. Attendance isn't madatory yet helps a lot! Only two midterms and a paper for this class. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
His exams are tough. Multiple choice is weighted at 2% per question (ie: getting 2 questions wrong 4% docked). Need to be very very specific in written response. Do not take the 1 hour blocks. You won't have time to finish your exam. Paper was hard to do. Pick an easy but specific topic. Do it ahead of time.
If your looking for a GPA booster this isn't the professor for you. Exams are super long, not very helpful, and his lecture slides are super short. (This means you have to look in the textbook for answers) Overall he's a nice guy but he assumes everyone is majoring in psychology. Multiple choice questions are lengthy and some are confusing.
Alex was a great prof. He provided clear study guides for all exams, and you are able to get the answers to his guide from his PowerPoint slides and use the textbook to add a little depth. He was a fair but slightly tough marker when it came to the term paper. He is not afraid to take marks off for APA formatting, so ask if you're confused.
I loved Alex as a proff. Attending lectures helped so much to gain a better understanding and he uses extra examples that are helpful come midterms. The tests aren't difficult seeing as he gives you study questions before hand & the tests are based off only them. The class takes effort regardless of the prof but Alex made it bearable!
Alex makes every assignment and exam so easy for you. Gives you practice questions to do before the exams and most questions are on the actual exams. Powerpoints sometimes could use a little more information, but overall would take many more courses wit him!
Alex is fresh to teaching but he's one of the best profs I've had by far. His lectures and engaging, although attendance is mandatory because he expands a lot on his powerpoints. Reading the textbook isn't required. His tests are fair because he gives you study questions beforehand and the written is based off the study questions.
Exams are lengthy and multiple choice questions are mostly critical thinking. Definitely not a gpa booster.
He's one of the best profs I have had! His exams are straight out of the powerpoints. He gives study questions for each chapter and uses those for written response for midterms. He's really helpful!
His lectures are dry & boring. Typical new prof. He just reads from the slides (which he posts). "You have to attend class to pass" but ends up testing strongly on the text and very minor details. His tests are harder than they need to be for a first year Psych class. Not impossible, but there are better profs. Ruined my interest in Psych.
I got an 83 on the first midterm and a 90 on the last one without having to read all of the chapters assigned from the textbook. However, if you miss a lecture they are really similar to what you will find in the textbook. He gives practice questions which are really helpful for the midterms because the short answer comes directly from them.
Alexander is an extremely good professor. If you come to his lectures, you'll do fine on the midterms. His midterms weren't long at all and were so easy if you studied. He posted study questions a couple weeks before the midterm and chooses 4 of those exact questions to put on the midterm. He really knows his stuff.
Alex is in his first year of teaching as of Winter term 2015. I mention this because there are a few things he does characteristic of new profs- he's extremely laid back, but tends to make his tests harder to compensate, imo. He is, however, always available and is easy to reach. You don't need to attend to get a good mark.
By far one of the best psych profs I've had. As long as you read the powerpoints and textbook to expand on his notes you're guaranteed an A. He gives the exam questions ahead of time and made lectures very interesting with the use of videos. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, but it does help clarify some things in his notes.
Alexander is a really nice guy and his lectures are always very interesting. He's funny at times and his slight newfie accent is awesome! He's very helpful in and outside of class time, and he really knows his stuff! Alexander even offers to edit your paper for you before it's due - could you really ask for anything more?? Such a great prof!! :)
Alex was one of the best profs I had so far and his tests were really easy as long as you do the study questions that he gives you and read over the lecture slides. He was pretty funny and is always there to help. Going to class is not mandatory but it helps since he explains everything very well!
Easy and interesting lectures, explains a lot of extra things in the lectures that won't be in the notes, but will be in the textbook, so either read the textbook or pay attention in class.
one of the best profs ive ever had at macewan, his class was interesting and he is passionate about what he is teaching. He gives more midterms but the trade off is that they are on less material, I liked it. His lectures are worth attending ( he is funny too)as the powerpoint slides alone dont go into very much depth. Great teacher overall.
My favourite teacher at Macewan. Classes are interesting and funny, uses real-life examples to help you understand concepts. Always willing to help after class and actually cares if his teaching methods are effective or not. Easy A, made me strongly consider majoring in psych. Take this class!
Dr. Penney was an amazing prof! His classes were very clear and straight to the point. A lot of the time his lectures were shorter than expected. He makes study guides before midterms which are extremely helpful when studying. 10/10 would recommend
I took his Psyc 104 class and it was the easiest thing ever. No reason to fail, he gives you chapter reviews and the midterm short answer questions are straight from those. Textbook isn't even needed, just nice for a deeper understand when studying at home. Easily would take again, highly recommended!
Alex was by far my favourite prof this semester. He truly loves psych and is passionate about making other people interested as well. His lectures are clear-cut, and his PowerPoints are always 100% accurate and easy to read. He is also hilarious in that "humanity is confusing sometimes" way, which is just a bonus. Couldn't recommend anymore more.
What everyone else said. Fantastic, funny, easy tests, perfect slides, there if you have questions, willing to help understand, and passionate about what he does. Perfect proff. in my eyes.
He is one of the best prof's I've ever had. Makes the material interesting and also makes the class fun to learn in. Midterms and Finals are fully outlined as what to expect right down to the questions.
Take an introductory psychology course with Alex; you won't regret it. His lectures are incredibly organized and are highly relevant to the exams he sets. He teaches from PowerPoint, but he attempts to engage students by including videos and links to interesting material not covered in the text. Fantastic professor with a wry sense of humour.
Alex is the best psyc prof ever! He uses a lot of funny videos and memes to help you remember concepts and terms. His tests are so easy as well, matching, MC and long answer. But the best part is that he tells you which concepts and or questions to focus on so you're not studying material that isn't going to be on the test. And he's got an accent:)
Dr. Penney is one of MacEwan's true gems. He really wants you to succeed and does everything he can to help you do it. He is willing to review your paper for you and provides LOADS of great feedback so you can do well. He gives you questions to focus you're studying so that it's not overwhelming. He makes class incredibly fun and interesting. A+++
One of the best professors I've ever had! Lectures are posted on blackboard and are interesting. Gives 3 Mid-terms which makes studying a lot easier, and he also gives out study questions that are on the exam. Exams were easy if you study his study guide. I also visited him a few times during his office hours, and he was always helpful and nice
In my opinion, he thinks he's funnier than he is. It's not a huge deterrent, but it was something I could've done without. In such a large class (60+ students) I'm sure it's hard to develop a good teacher-student connection. His humor just didn't add anything of value to my experience. He posts study questions that mimic exams. Impossible to fail.
I would highly recommend! While his lectures were a little dry, it was solely due to the boring class material, but he did his best to try and make it interesting! There were three midterms and a final, and he would pick his short answer for the tests directly from study questions he would give you. I loved this course, such a positive experience!
Would highly recommend! He adds a lot of information with his lectures, gives great feedback prior to handing in assignments, very quick to respond to emails, gives clear expectations of test material/assignments. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed his class, great professor, and would definitely take a class with him again.
Really good guy! He makes a lot of silly and awkward jokes that are pretty funny. He makes things super easy to understand, especially when it's confusing in the textbook.
Easily one of my fav profs at MacEwan! He genuinely wants his students to do well. He makes everything easy to understand and gives clear expectations for both the tests and assignments. Textbook was also an easy read. There were 2 midterms, an article summary and final, along with a few easy bonus marks. Highly recommend :)
Really great prof. Lectures were interesting, explained material very well. Exams were very easy. Assignments were a little bit more difficult. Need the textbook for online quizzes. Would highly recommend for any student, gain an in depth knowledge of the subject and an easy A to top it off.
Great professor! Very funny and caring towards students. He gives what questions will be used for written response on exams ahead of time to prepare. Also gives great study questions for each chapter that make knowing what material he's testing easy. Would definitely take more courses from him.
Alex is amazing. You need the textbook for quizzes, but the notes are better for the exams. You don't have to go to class to do well, but he's cute so you should just go if only for that reason. This is an easy course if you put in the effort. Really enjoyed his class and will definitely be taking another of his.
HE IS AWESOME!!! Alex is a very professional prof and super nice. approachable and ready to help, very friendly and really organized. online quizzes that prepare you for midterms and good review. midterms are very fair. go to his class and take good notes (for short answers). Really enjoyed his class and he is the cutest prof I have ever had. If yo
He really cares for his students and knows how it feels like to be a student. he offers lots of opportunities so you do well. please hug him for me if you're a boy!!!! Tnx ;)
Alex Penney is by far my favorite professor at the University. He is very passionate about what he teaches and has an incredibly extensive knowledge base that he applies to what you are learning in class. If you are passionate about psychology you will not be disappointed with him, and you will learn more going to his lectures than anyone else's.
He is really strict about his papers, but everything otherwise is great. Notes are easy to understand and access, and its easy to get in contact with him outside class as well. He is also very thorough with what expectations he has for assignments too.
I was really looking forward to this class but if i am honest I can't say it like it that much. I think i have previous background that made some of the stuff repetitive and made classes hard to attend. He is a young guy, I don't blame him. The exams are easy but if you want really learn, be prepared to read a lot!
Alex Literally sets you up with all the tools to learn and succeed. Puts in A LOT of effort to teach and help students become better students. There were a lot of quizzes/assignments but its so worth it, because it takes the pressure off the final exam. The final is cumulative which nobody likes, but technically only worth 23% of grade so nobiggie!
I loved having Dr. Penney as a prof this semester. His powerpoints are clear and he gives numerous examples throughout class, although his powerpoints are accessible on Blackboard too. He gives hints as to what will be on his tests a few days before. As long as you read the textbook and read through his slides, you'll definitely pass!
Amazing prof. Hands down easiest class i ever took. Just attend class, read the textbook and you'll pass. His exams are straight forward and gives amazing feedback.
Great prof with great lectures. Provides good examples in class. His test questions can be a bit obscure though.
He is a decent prof. He seems like a good guy but his lectures can get a bit dry. He does provide good examples in class. His test questions can be a bit obscure and there are a lot of online quizzes you have to do. He is pretty cute if that is what you base your prof choices on.
I was in his winter '18 class I had 17 things to do in this class; a presentation, report, 9 quizzes, research participation, term paper, peer review, midterm, & final Other than the overwhelming amount of work that needs to be done for this class He is a wonderful, kind, thoughtful, funny, teacher, his enthusiasm kept me from dropping the class.
exams are stupid hard but hes chill
Alex is a really good prof. He really enjoys what he teaches and it shows. He gives lots of good and rather funny examples (and sometimes excersises) throughout his lectures. His online tests are fair, but you need to have read the textbook and gone through your lecture notes in order to get a good mark. He's also not hard to look at.
Tells you what to expect in the midterms and finals. DO THE STUDY QUESTIONS and you should be fine.
Alex was an excellent professor. Not only is he knowledgeable in his field, he is kind, caring, and overall a great guy. He makes me want to come to every lecture...I missed one because I was sick and I was actually sad. He is a tough BUT fair grader and is ALWAYS available if you need anything. I would love to take another one of his classes!!
My only complaint is the amount of online quizzes and the obscurity of the questions. I did better on the midterm and final than the quizzes. Overall, pretty solid. The lectures are interesting
Alex Penney is by far one of the best profs I have ever had. His lectures are very easy to understand and he presents the information in a way that makes attending class fun! His midterms and final were very fair, if you do the practice questions given (this is where the long answer on the exams come from) you will do well! Overall awesome prof!
very funny and intelligent. gives useful examples. makes material clear and interesting. 100% WOULD RECOMMEND.
Make sure you go over all the requirements for the paper because he is really nit picky when it comes to grading them. I received the lowest mark in my whole university career on his term paper and it dropped my grade by 3 letter grades. However, the rest of the course is enjoyable and he's a great prof and guy. Just be super careful for papers!
I got a b on the first exam and I freaked and he helped me so much that I managed to pull back and get an A. He is amazing. If psych 105 is a Hybrid class next year dont take it though youll learn nothing like in 104.
Alex practically gives you half the midterm questions (study questions he gives you). Final was tougher, as it is cumulative. Online quizzes were quick and easy. He is picky on assignments, but tells you exactly what you need to include to do well. His lectures are enjoyable and easy to follow.
Alex is a great prof, he is very knowledgeable and helpful to students. He gives every opportunity for students to succeed and is always open to student input. Lectures can be dry due to content of diagnostic criteria but it is an interesting course. There are easy online quizzes on each chapter, a presentation/assignment and a term paper.
Alex is awesome, he's definitely my favourite professor out of all of the professors I've had during my 4 year degree. He can make any topic interesting, night classes are the best with him. Alex is hilarious, passionate and very knowledgeable. He provides a lot of extra resources/examples and is very clear with his expectations.
Material is HARD but he's the definition of going above and beyond. He loves this material and wants you to love it an understand it as well. Provides tons of examples/explanations and lots of optional extra material. Group project, 1 paper, 1 midterm and final. Would take Dr. Penney for every psyc class is possible. Very knowledgeable and kind.
By far my favorite class I have ever taken at MacEwan! He had really clear expectations and study questions that tell you exactly what is going to be on each exam. Loved his class so much I signed up for another one with him!!
Best prof I've ever had. very content heavy but is very interesting and very accessible outside of class for extra help on assignments and general help with content. would absolutely take his class again
Alex co-taught this course, and communicated with us every week through email! His tests were challenging but do-able so long as you did the required readings! He is a very caring prof and responded to emails fast. Overall, a great professor, and even better person!
Alex is always on top of everything. Emails were fast and informative. Since this was a self-paced online course, lecture materials were available on blackboard ahead of time. Exams were multiple-choice and based on the textbook. His writing assignments appear simple, but he marks according to a tough criteria. All in all, a solid professor.
Did not provide any lectures and only had the textbook. He also marks very hard.
He did not teach at all, I found he was super picky on the assignments as well because he gives you a lot of resources. I managed to do well on them and exams were fair. However, I do not learn via textbook well and struggle to focus so this was my hardest class this semester. I was looking forward to him teaching in person, very disappointed.
His lecture videos were educational and not boring to watch. He is helpful when asking questions and guiding you through the course. Exams are straightforward and papers are graded fairly as he lets you know what to improve on. Would definately take a class with him again.
his writing assignments seem to be a breeze but beware because he is one of the strictest markers I've ever dealt with. class averages on them were very low but at least his tests were fair.
Dr. Penney is amazing! His online class had a super reasonable amount of work and he was good about giving email reminders when due dates were coming up. He's a strict grader on his assignments, but if you email him questions before the due date he gives extremely helpful feedback. He definitely cares for his class and students
Amazing professor! He provided email reminders when due dates were coming up, which was very helpful by the end of the semester. He is a strict grader when it comes to his assignments. However, if you email him before the assignment is due with any questions, his responses are very helpful. Overall, quizzes were fair, but you have to teach yourself
I like that he gave email reminders but he is one of the toughest profs when it comes to grading papers. However, I appreciated that he took the time to hand out marks because he was able to give more precise feedback. Exams were fair but this class was basically self taught so be prepared to spend a lot of time with the textbook!
Dr. Penney is probably the best prof I've ever had, he is extremely helpful when you ask for help or feedback, is a super fair marker, and wants to do everything he can to help you succeed.
He is an amazing prof and really cares for his students. He always sends out emails reminding us of when things are due and wants what's best for us. His exams are fair but his grading for the papers is quite rough, he marks really hard. Other than being a tough grader on papers which make up 40% of your grade, he's an amazing prof and I reccomend
Easy quizzes, but hard assignments. Super tough grader, however, if you ask for feedback/help he is usually pretty good with giving it to you.
Exclusively textbook dependent. Be prepared to read it in it's entirety for every quiz, the midterm, and the final exam because there is no condensed lecture material. Answers to every question are arbitrary one-liners from the textbook. Assignment grading is unreasonably perfectionistic pampered to his 100 conditions for a one page assignment.
Honestly, if you are on the fence about this class, i HIGHLY recommend it! He was very lenient with due dates, very easy to contact outside of class, and very understanding. My Penney was super kind and seems like he really cares about his student's grades, and especially their mental health. Definitely, the best prof i have has thus far! :)
Lectures are amazing and are recorded. Few questions in exams pulled from the textbook, which I stopped reading as he covers all of the examples in lectures anyway. If you attend and write good notes you will do well. He gives detailed instructions for assignment and marks fairly. Overall, Dr. Penney is an amazing prof and I highly recommend!
Alex is amazing. Best prof I have had at MacEwan so far. He is extremely informational and funny and makes lectures super interesting. This class is very difficult as it is a lot of memorizing and applying, so I struggled at times with the material, but I would 100% take another class with Alex. Very good at communicating over email and accessible
Thorough, clear lectures, take good notes and ask questions when you need clarification & you'll be in good shape for exams. He gives you CONTEXT to understand why what we're learning matters and why it is the way it is. Go to office hours for the final paper and you'll do better than you imagined. Clear learning outcomes. Alex is the GOAT.
If you want a good mark, attend lectures and take notes. Anything that comes out of his mouth, WRITE IT DOWN. 2 midterms, 2% was from the text, and 98% were tested on the lectures for both midterms, a paper. The final was cumulative but easier than the midterms. He also doesn't talk loudly, so sit closer if you have trouble hearing him.
this class was combo taught with Miranda Giacomin, both were funny, easy to understand, & used easy to remember examples. if your just dipping your toes into psych, this these 2 are definitely the right people to get you to enjoy it.
Heavy textbook and lecture tests, would recommend attending for the examples he brings to class. Covered topics easily, made it relatable and understandable. Made relations to his own experience which I thought was interesting - shaping some reality on psych misconceptions. Only a handful of "turn to the person next to you", in the beginning.
probably one of the best psyc profs out there. answers emails in a timely manner and will grant extensions if he see that the work has been put in for essays. gives out study guides but doing the textbook readings defenitly help out too
Co-taught with Miranda Giacomin both were very good at teaching and providing examples to understand concepts better. 8 quizzes which are open book and remove your lowest quiz from your grade. Midterms weren't too hard, mostly MC with 2 short answers you pick from a choice of 3. I would recommend taking their class.
One of the best professors I've had at MacEwan so far - he's extremely passionate about what he teaches and obviously really cares about his students. Attendance is important; what he says during the lectures will be tested on exams, which were all fair. Super funny guy, would definitely take another class with him.
Dr. Penney is one of the most committed professors I've ever had! Not only does he take the time to put together clear, engaging lectures, but his door is always open to help with anything outside of class. He gave me a lot of his time sharing his insights on the different fields of psychology & grad schools, which greatly helped me plan my future.
Penney is a great prof, love his lectures and brings in great examples. excited to take his 405 class!
Dr. Penney is great at teaching & getting messages across to a younger audience. His lectures take up exactly the amount of time needed but he also makes sure you don't have many questions before leaving the room. I love his Newfie accent slips lol.
You can tell Dr.Penney genuinely loves what he teaches. He has examples that are very easy/applicable to daily life. Textbook is needed for a few quiz questions, but for the exams attending and taking good notes is enough (textbook helps for additional clarification). 30 MC/10 WR for midterm (non cumulative) and 50 MC/10 WR for final (cumulative).
I love this prof, he is very good at explaining his concepts and makes the content enjoyable and easy to understand, will be taking him again
i have taken two classes with him an both were extremely fair classes, study and you'll do well there are no tricks.
Loved Alex, this course is content heavy but he is amazing. He's there for students, easy to meet with, provides MANY examples, is very knowledgable, and posts lectures online if we missed a class. Very funny dude too. Write down EVERYTHING he says tho, as most come from lecture and not the textbook. 1 downside he's a tough grader, 9/10 recommend!
Alex is a great prof. He gives very detailed and clear feedback on assignments, and you get the opportunity to do an additional assignment to supplement your marks. Records all lectures so you don't miss anything. Tests are fair and based on a combination of his lectures and the textbook. Study questions are the BEST for review.
One of the best educators I've ever met; he provides more guidance than an advisor. Exams are based fully on lectures, which he uploads videos of, so studying's a breeze - just make sure to take notes. Evaluative components are clear and fair. If you ever need support, Dr. Penney will go above and beyond to provide it. He wants everyone to succeed.
