If you want to be completely oblivious to what is going on in lecture, be given a snarky comment when asking questions, and enjoy huge curves to save your butt and grade then Schwab is your guy! He is the most awful professor I have had here at App. He can not teach, and doesn't really care. I would try avoiding him at all costs.
Schwab managed to confuse me on things I already understood. He HATES when you ask questions. He is very rude and his lectures are impossible to understand. I struggled and made a C. He is awful, dont take.
I took Chemistry my very first semester with Schwab, and it was awful. He is very monotone and his lectures seem to last forever. At the end of the semester, my grade was two tenths of a point from being a B so I emailed him asking for any slight extra credit to which he never responded. I get not giving the opportunity just provide a response.
Worst teacher I've ever had the displeasure of learning (or not learning) from. Does not offer any explanation for anything he teaches. If you ask a question he will embarrass you in front of everyone. He is rude, unprofessional, and has to curve EVERY assignment by 30+points because no one can pass learning from him. DO NOT TAKE!
Honestly, not a good teacher at all. It's evident that he knows what he's talking about, but he can't explain anything to save his life. I really haven't learned anything in the class but I have a B because he has to curve everything a ton. His curves are awesome, but I'll probably be unprepared for chem 2.
He's terrible at teaching... every time I ask a question it he can't explain it in a different way and says "I just said that". Class feels stupid but I always go anyway. There is online homework before every class and like 4 tests and multiple quizzes which make up the final grade. Definitely would not recommend him.
PChem lab was probably the hardest thing I've ever taken, but Schwab was definitely the best from what I've heard. He gives lot of written feedback and is pretty fast at grading. He is an awkward man, but very nice and knows what he is talking about. He was happy to go through my mathmatica and try to fix anything he could.
Dr. Schwab is a great professor and is clearly very passionate about what he is teaching. However, if you even blink during a lecture, you miss a bunch of information. He doesn't go back over things in class, even if the majority of the class doesn't understand. He is available during his office hours and is very helpful 1 on 1.
Schwab is a good guy and clearly knows what he's talking about, but sometimes the concepts he explains are hard to understand. Going to LEAD really helps, but I'm still really struggling in this class mostly because the tests are so difficult. Also, he gives homework every night and quizzes every week but drops a few of the lowest ones which helps
Schwab is a really nice guy, but I literally failed his lecture despite near perfect attendance and going to the review sessions. His teaching style did not vibe with mine and I left office hours more confused than when I went in. To put this in perspective, I'm passing the lab with a 96%, but I'll have to retake this lecture over the summer.
The most condescending professor I've ever had. Class was spent going in math circles that usually wasted an hour. Does not follow structure of class offered at other schools. He acted like we were dumb for not inherently understanding quantum mechanics. He made up the tests the morning of and then solved them while we took it.
Mr. Schwab seems nice and loves chemistry. HOWEVER, he does not teach well for people who arent very familiar with chemistry. His lectures fall behind with sapling homework. Also, every chem class gets a lead tutor and he doesnt seem to think they matter like most professors. Good luck being caught up in chem 2 if you have him
His class seemed like a standard chemistry lecture to me. If you go to class, pay attention, do the homework (and make sure you understand it while you do it), and review the slides a little before the tests you'll do great. The only bad thing is I felt rushed during the tests and quizzes sometimes because they were too dense for the time limit.
Dr. Schwab is probably the most unapproachable professor I've had. This class is the "writing in discipline", but he only gave feedback on 2 lab reports before the semester was over. Very ineffective communicator and educator. Pretty proud of my C. Even though I worked super hard, he did not grade fairly.
As an educator he is not great. The manner in which he understands how his students learn is sub par. I would wish that he would be more empathetic to how difficult understanding quantum mechanics are understood. That said, got to give the guy props for the bear wrestling stories.
I have had 3 different chemistry teachers at App so far and none of them are good. I tired paying attention in class but I would just get lost. The powerpoint did not help me at all because the majority of the class is math. There was a sapling homework after every class and quizzes after each chapter. The quizzes and tests are curved.
Dr. Schwab was a great professor for CHE 1102! He gives a ton of credit back to you on your test, which makes it super easy to atleast pass the class. All you need to do is show up and do your homework.
Schwab is one of those professors that will lecture and lecture and go on forever and don't care if you know it or not... one time in class he didn't know the answer to a problem and he ASKED SIRI! I cannot make this up. If you have the chance to take him... RUN.. don't look back because if you look back... you're gonna fail. PERIODDT
If you study and do the work, you'll be fine. I was extremely worried when I saw these reviews. Everything is multiple choice, which no other chem professor here does, so you'll at least have an answer for everything. This class is my highest grade currently. Put in effort and you'll see results. Plus all quizzes and tests are curved.
Great Professor. I would definitely take him again. If you study and do your homework you will pass.
Terrible professor. The worst in the Chem department. No effective feedback until last week of class! He didnt appear to know subject well.
Schwab is one of those professors that you really like or you really do not like. He genuinely does not care whether or not you know the material or not AND he makes you stay after exams so he can lecture... AFTER AN EXAM. No need to ask for help, he will just repeat the same thing over and over gain and visibly get frustrated that you don't get it
He is bad at teaching and doesn't take time to explain things like he should.
By far the worst instructor I have ever had in my entire academic career. Does not care if you know the material, class averages for quizzes were extremely low and he doesn't acknowledge that students don't understand the material, just slaps a curve on and gives an exam on the same material the next class period. Worst in the chem department.
Schwab is not the best chemistry professor. If you don't have much prior knowledge of chemistry 1 or 2, do not take him. I did well in the class due to me teaching myself with khan academy and other scholarly websites. He doesn't teach the material well and there is never enough time on the quizzes or tests. He uses a huge curve due to bad average.
He's a pretty good professor. He does lectures the entire class and gives a handful of in-class question on Chem101, but they're not that hard. Tests and quizzes are all multiple-choice. He posts lecture slides before hand. I recommend taking notes BEFORE coming to class because he does go a little quick. Do the homework, study, and you'll pass.
Horrible. Awful. Horrendous. Every bad adjective you can think of. Does not care about students or their understanding of a topic. Gets visibly annoyed if you dont understand something. Goes very quickly in class and quizzes and tests are very heavy with not enough time allotted.
Dr. Schwab was obviously very knowledgable about what he was teaching. However, he was an awful professor and did not do a good job at all of explaining difficult topics. He relied heavily on homework and chem101 to teach you material. Exams and quizzes felt overwhelming due to math heavy questions and not enough time allotted. avoid if possible
Hated coming to this class. He made topics a million times harder than they needed to be and did not explain difficult topics nearly enough. He would begin example problems and then not complete them, which made topics even more confusing. I recommend investing in Chegg if you need to take Schwab because that is the only way I learned material.
Hardest class of my life. He barely explained anything in the lectures and the lectures never aligned with the homework or tests. It is so hard for no reason. I spent countless hours outside of class trying to learn material because he wouldn't teach it. He has to curve everything heavily (a 40 point curve on time) because everyone fails
P chem is described by him as the department's hazing ritual. He either grades for partial credit or slaps a big curve on the tests b/c the class is so hard. Go to LEAD, talk to people in the class, read the textbook, and do every homework and you might scrape out a B. This class will try your sanity.
Chemistry is hard PERIOD! He is SUPER freaking smart, has multiple choice on his tests (which is uncommon for this concentration), goes over every quiz in detail, and chem101 hw questions that are easy enough, with a massive curve on every test/quiz. It's not a breeze, you gotta study, but you WILL pass if you go to class and put in the work.
His lectures don't really make too much sense. He told my class that he didn't know a certain particular atom on the periodic table that was a simple one. He will call you out big time so.... Gives homework every night. Rushes through things. Handwriting is horrible to understand. Gives a lot of quizzes. Just overall a very interesting professor.
Terrible professor overall. Expects you to come into lecture knowing material most people were never taught. There is homework given every night. Quizzes given almost every week. Would highly recommend trying to get a different professor.
not a good professor, he acts like he doesn't care. Go to class or you will not pass. Quizzes given every week. Homework every night, do not recommend.
Only take this class if you want to cry every night
A lot of people don't like Schwab because of the class being hard, but the truth is, chemistry itself is hard! and it takes practice! Schwab gives a lot of homework, but without homework I wouldn't know the material, so its good for you. the curves on his tests and quizzes are huge too (20+ points) so if you put effort in, you absolutely will pass!
Dr. Schwab's downfall is that he doesn't seem to care if people are struggling. Instead of helping students understand the material, he lets people fail and then just puts a huge curve on every assignment (20-30+ points). So if you go to class, you will pass, but only from the curve. If you need to actually learn chem, don't take him.
Literally just reads the information in the slides. Good lectures but extremely fast pace with absolutely no leeway with grading.
I know chemistry is hard, but I am so sad he made a fascinating topic so tedious and difficult. He made it clear he did not care about us, the content, or our learning. His tests were impossibly difficult, no matter how much you studied you failed with a LARGE curve. That really crushed my spirit hard and fast. Don't take him.
Chemistry is a hard subject I know, but I used to be so engaged and interested in this subject until I took his class. I would feel like I understood everything, then get to the test or quizzes and they're so much different. You never really learn anything, the only reason you pass is due to such high curves. For example, I made a 30 and curved 70.
Great professor and great person! Tough course but super understanding and amazing to talk to! Don't slack in this course or you'll definitely fall behind! Go to lead tutoring!
Chemistry is already a difficult class to begin with, and Professor Schwab makes it so much harder. Barely does example problems, and only reads off slides. Only looks at things through the perspective of someone who has studied chem for years, not a new learner. Do not recommend taking him. I'm sure he's a good person, just not a good teacher.
Lots of online homework that is due at least 3 times a week. Just reads off PowerPoint slides and barely does example problems. Basically no point in coming to class when youtube videos are a better help. Not helpful either. If you can, just try for a better professor that will actually help you.
ive attended half of the lectures and still have a B only because of the lead sessions. All of the exams are curved otherwise the entire class would fail. what he teaches in class is hardly relevant to whats on the exams. i could skip every class and go to the lead session the night before the exam and pass with a B or even an A.
His writing is completely illegible, he breezes through things without letting people ask questions or check for understanding, and he's also just not helpful or personable. Makes an already hard class even harder. Only good thing is that everything is heavily curved. Please somebody else start teaching this class.
I had Schwab 5 years ago for gen chem 2 and I still think about how traumatic this class was. I just had to come back and see if this poor excuse for a teacher was still here and it seems he is. BEWARE. I still have trauma from this god awful class years later.
This is one of the worst classes I have ever taken. He explains nothing and acts as if everything should be common sense; there is no point in asking questions, as he will say he has already explained it. The only bright side is the curve, which is the only way anyone will pass. Do not take him, even if he is your only choice
Doesn't explain things well, tests don't reflect homework & quizzes. Handwriting is illegible, made our class pay 45$ for a website that we'll never use again. Gave us the standardized final exam (most teachers don't), and tried to get us to buy a 30$ study guide for it. I only got by with the grading curve which was 20-40 pts
the fact that this man is still employed amazes me. on the day of our final exam, he had only graded 2 out of the 8 post lab assignments, meaning no one knew their updated grade. he is condescending anytime you ask ANY type of question about the class. if time travel were real i would go back in time and prevent him from ever getting hired at app.
