Can't understand anything, so very confusing. Accent takes weeks to resemble English. Wait a quarter for someone else.
Great teacher.
His lectures totally suck! They didn't help out on the homework or on the midterms. Plus, whenever a midterm or final approached, he wouldn't bother to tell the class what was on the exam. He was also unhelpful in office hours. I regret taking him!
its very hard to understand him. his accect is really thick. the only reason i did okay in his class was beacuse i had taken 131 before so i knew a lot of the stuff he was TRYING to teach.
he accused me of cheating, which is stupid, especially when i didn't even look anywhere but my own paper. his accent is very hard to understand sometimes, and his lectures are straight out of the book. you might as well just save time by not going to lecture and read just read the book.
Horrible teacher, no reason for him to be in a classroom
Soshnikov's style of teaching is to give students the tools to solve any problem--as opposed to the recipe method. Although this class was extremely difficult, it stretched my mind--which hurt a lot--and taught me to view mathematics in a very different and more complete way.
Horrible teacher. Lectures were almost pointless to go to because he was so hard to understand, and material did not make any sense. Midterm and final were both impossible.
Got a B in his class and i had to work very hard for it. He is not that bad though. His style of teaching results in one thinking a lot and understand the material in a better way. But i would rather have taken a different professor. But all in all....not that bad
Pretty much all he did in class was write proofs on the board, no examples. Never gave us answers to the homework or the midterm. Have to learn it all on your own. Study groups are a must if you get stuck with this guy.
The worst experience in a math course ever. His accent is impossible to keep up with, his lectures are flat out chapter readings, and he rarely does examples. I do NOT recommend this guy to anyone who is interested in passing Vector Analysis.
Incredibly difficult class, horrible book (graduate/genius level). That said he was very helpful. I was in his office twice a week and he was always there willing to help (well beyond his posted hours). if you work hard and want to learn, he'll get you through it.
I took Dr. Soshnikov the "Measure Theory" class. His explaination was very clear and very rigorous. Give quite a lot of homework thus push you to learn. Wonderful teacher for graduate level course.
Terrible teacher... heavy accent to top it off. After you do get used to the accent he is still an ass, who lies to you about whats going to be on the midterm. "there will be maybe 1 proof on the exam" there ended up being 5... out of 6 problems 5 were proofs. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!
he does not like to help his students. during office hours, he refused to answer the questions to the sample final exam.
avoid! Too theoretical for a lower division class!HW was too theoretical.midterm was handwritten and he said there'd only be at most 1 theoretical question. Almost all of them were theoretical. Final is 50% of grade and sure dragged mine down.It had multiple choice like the SAT where you add negative points to your score if the answer is wrong. bad
for some reason he doesn't like to answer many questions about the sample exams that he gave out. so in essence it was hard to prepare for the REAL exams. oh, and he assigns alot of hw each week.
He was impossible to understand, and wasnt helpful at all when he was trying to explain the material. The final had SAT style questions including the negative points. Also too strict on homework deadlines. AVOID!!
NEVER be helpful. His accent is very thick, and his teaching was just simply falting out the textbooks. But, his exams were kinda easy. Just prepare theoretical questions as much as possible. He loves proofing.
You get used to his accent after a few lectures. His midterm was terrible though as he had lots of theoretical problems on there though he said there would only be one. A practice test would've been helpful. His homework policy is ridiculous b/c he went by the classroom time which was 1-2 minutes ahead. The final was alright though.
WORST CLASS ever, well at least with him because he doesn't know how to teach at all.
Absolutley great professor. if your not an idiot youll get an A. you get use to his accent after the first day. He is brilliant and knows what he is talking about. Very easy midterms. 45% was the the cutoff for a B.
This might be his 1st time teaching 21A but idk. He's overrated. I was told he's a good teacher but that accent is strong and I'm just not really liking his taching skills! Toppa that he cancelled the TA's office hours cuz he said that if we need it we should convince him otherwise we should go to his office hours. wtfeez i learn more w/ the TA tho
I liked Soshnikov; he has a strong accent, but you get used to that quickly enough. His lectures were very straightforward, almost straight from the book. I went to his office hours and he was very helpful. I wish I still had him; DO NOT TAKE BIELLO for 21B!
Your entire grade is based on a final and 3 or 4 quizzes, all of which have only a few problems, basically all or nothing. Sosh has a confusing accent and mumbles a lot, also doesn't allow TAs to have office hours (thinks we shouldn't need to ask them for help...) Nice guy but the class isn't that great. Curve was alright but that's about it.
Real Analysis is one of the hardest math classes in general. That being said this professor is great. He has an accent but after 2 classes you will get used to it. Midterm/Final are challenging, but doable. Make sure you know your MAT25 stuff, or you will get screwed in class. And btw, his math jokes are priceless.
Real Analysis is supposed to be hard, but this prof made it pretty easy. I only got an A-, but I must say it wasn't too bad if you spend time trying to understand the course. The homework, midterm, and final were challenging, but doable.
Yes, he has an accent. However, he definitely knows his stuff. Here and there the lectures will be very confusing and it's best to just read the book, but for the most part his teaching is right on with what you should know. Homeworks are relevant and office hours are extremely helpful. He cares about the students and their growth in math.
Not the best in the math department. He didn't even give solutions to the practice final, the one he posted a few days before the actual final. He doesn't explain new topics clearly. My advice, do not take soshnikov unless you have to!! Also, every other word is "Agreed?" It made me want to scream after the 679th time.
Not the best math professor, but survivable. Has an accent, lectures weren't very clear. Must read the book and do problems in order to understand material. Assigned suggested hw, but never gave answers. Quizzes were the hw problems. Exams were fair and straightforward if you understand the material. Overall alright teacher if you study hard.
Sure, he has an accent, but the man is intelligent in the subject. He is unclear at times, but he gives you the tools you need to teach yourself. You'll have to do the readings and the suggested problems. The tests are reasonable and are right on lecture material. Overall, a very likable professor.
He has a thick accent which can be hard to understand at times, but he is extremely knowledgeable. His tests are somewhat fair, but they can be very tricky; he really tests your knowledge of the material! Overall, he was just okay.
I always hated math but his lack of hope in students made me want to prove him wrong and ace those midterms. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Sure, he has a thick accent but you'll get used to it. He is very knowledgeable and willing to help students.
although, the professor knows what he is talking about he puts emphasis on the wrong kind of stuff. the lecture are pretty much the proofs from the text. The first midterm was extremely hard, but rest of the tests were managable. Huge curves, mean for the first mid term was thirty four %
His lectures were all on proofs and with the all the problems he give you like homework problems, you basically have to teach the material yourself. His exams are tricky, but if you do all of the problems he gives you, then you should get a passing grade. Go to office hours if needed, read the book and use outside resources to help you learn.
His lectures are basically proofs from the book. Bases test questions on HW from the book and webwork. MT average was 50%, but has a generous curve.
MAT 21C. Hard to understand through accent, gotta concentrate to get what he is saying. Lectures were kinda boring, lots of proofs and not enough examples. In addition to webwork, has some suggested "theory" problems that give a framework for midterms and final. Very nice guy in office hours, definitely helpful rather than TAs.
You will not get used to his accent! Very hard to understand. His tests are really hard so study well! However, he seems like a nice guy.
His tests questions are straight from the book which he revealed to us after each exam. He even gave the exact location in the textbook where the questions were. Possibly the highlight of my time with him was his accent in saying "the upperbound" Aside from that, the class is a bore
He has some cool sweaters and a cool (but hard to understand) accent. Tests aren't exactly hard but would be a lot more fair if we had more time/less questions. Practice midterm questions do not reflect the actual midterm questions.
I'm not sure why his rating is as low as it. He has an accent, but after about 3 lectures, it was no problem. Otherwise, he explains things well, and emphasizes genuinely understanding the underlying principles, which is very helpful, although not necessarily easy. Also, he has a bit of a sense of humor, which is nice. Overall, highly recommended.
Soshnikov is an awesome teacher. He is extremely funny and is willing to explain things in great detail. During this course, he basically taught straight from the book and would delve a little deeper into the explanations given by the text. His tests are hard but the curves are pretty generous so don't worry about that too much.
Didn't show up until the third day of instruction. Assigns homework due Friday, but doesn't cover the material until Wednesday and Friday, forcing me to do all of it on Thursday. Too lazy to upload a blank copy of the practice midterm, instead, uploads the answer key, in multiple files. This has to be a joke.
He's a horrible professor. His webwork homework is extremely difficult. He assigns it to be due friday, but doesnt cover the material until wednesday and friday, forcing you to do it last minute. He is one of the worst professors in the math department.
He has an accent and sometimes it's hard to understand him in class. He doesn't seem to care about his students much. His homework is due online every Friday and they are really hard. His tests are definitely a lot harder than the homework. If you're not good at math...well, good luck to you.
Soshikov wasn’t easy-- he made that clear from day one. He typically teaches higher levels of math…webwork hw is on material that he hasn’t finished covering so keep up with material and GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He may appear intimidating whilst lecturing but you’ll see in OH he genuinely cares and tries his best to help you understand the material.
Alex is a great guy but his teaching style is so unclear. He doesn't give many concrete examples which makes it hard when you go to do your actual homework. Two midterms and a final which are similar to homework problems. I probably would have been better off just skipping lecture to go home and teach myself. His curve is very generous.
Tests were fair; lectures were crystal clear. Homework was 1) always due before (IF) the material was covered 2) 10-20 pages long TYPED. Syllabus was incorrect. TA didn't seem to put a lot of work into the course. I get it, we're all busy grad students, but still. Some are turned off by his dismissive sense of humor, but don't be afraid of him.
His teaching itself is very organized but the technical details of it (posting info, etc.) is not. Read about a chapter ahead. Go to office hours.
His lectures are insightful and he's more than willing to help you if you ask questions. His office hours are really helpful and I'd suggest going to them. Almost all his test questions are from the textbook, so just do the homework.
Dr. Soshnikov really cares about his students. His lectures can be a little hard to follow but he is always willing to help. He is very friendly and helpful in office hours so I recommend you go as often as possible. Tests are hard but fair, for they are pretty similar to the HW problems. Attendance is not mandatory but highly recommended.
I retook 21A with Soshnikov. I believe he is one of the better math professors at Davis. The curves on his tests were quite big. I got an A on the final with 58%. My TA and workload EOP classes were also very helpful for this class. Would recommend looking into the EOP classes for 21 series.
Dr. Soshnikov is challenging but cares about his students. I'd take him!!
His accent is not that thick. He talks fast in lecture, but also covers every topic twice, so it evens out. The online hw is wayyyyy harder than anything on the tests, but you have unlimited tries so it's more annoying than grade-damaging. He is really helpful during office hours, so if you ever need help, don't be afraid to go in and ask.
He is good professor and cares about his students. I went to the office hours often and he was very happy to help. I would definitely take another math class that he offers. The homework he gave was harder than the actual exams. The actual exams were reasonable and if you studied, it is easy to do well in this class.
Homework was harder than exams but they're online and unlimited attempts. If you read the textbook and do early practice problems (low set numbers such as #130, not his #84 or #91) then you will do great on exams as they are similar. First midterm, bombed 60%. Then I looked at textbook. Aced the second 90%. Textbook is your best friend for exams.
His lectures are all over the place but the materials aren't hard. Just sit closer to the board and it's all good. Homework are quite annoying though. My TA was very helpful, so I basically learned from my TA. Soshnikov's "aGreE?" gets me every time though. He's sometimes not very nice to his students and often ignore your hand-raised so.
Prof. Soshnikov is extremely knowledgable; it's almost intimidating. His homework is a lot harder than his tests, which in retrospect is better than the other way around. His lectures are very theoretical, my only wish is that he covered more examples and applications of concepts.
Lectures were taken word for word from the book, he did not explain any further and avoided directly answering questions. Class was 60% 2 MTs, 40% final. Exams were densely worded, harshly graded, lots of 0/10 or 1/10 with little to no explanations. Understanding the topics is easy, understanding his questions? That's a whole different story.
Incredibly difficult class. The entire grade is based off midterms and tests with no homework grade to help your overall score. I took this class pass/no-pass and still stressed out about whether or not I could pass because that's simply how hard the tests are. No cheat sheet or formulas given on the test either. Avoid at all costs.
I am horrible at math but his grading made the class a whole lot less stressful for me. very genourous and LOVES to help.three midterms and one final. dropped the lowest midterm, equal weight. A 30% is a C on of the midterms anything! he will round the class average to be equivalent to a B DO THE HOMEWORK! GO TO OH!! lectures were recorded.
Grade was determined by 3 midterms and a final, with the lowest midterm score dropped. The final exam is the same weight as the midterms. The Professor is happy to answer questions and tries to make his lectures reasonable. However, he does state that his trial exams/midterms are nothing similar to the actual test. Generous with partial credit.
Professor is nice and is accessible during office hours but his teach style is very messy. You pretty much learn more by going through the textbook than you will in lecture. Homework preps you for exams. Exams were quite hard but grading was a generous. Dropped 1/3 midterms which helped, but the textbook and the curve saved me in this class.
Alex is nice, engaging, has good lectures (he posts the notes on Canvas), and the textbook matches the lectures well. He is helpful and accessible, but a tough grader (very particular). The HW/exam problems aren't too bad, but require a lot of work with very little time. Lots of studying and office hours are a must. He grades on a curve though.
Writes notes from lecture and blurts it out in class. grade only depends on exams. Homework is given but no mandatory neither are discussions. I wouldn't reccomend him.
father soshnikov was goated fr the guy below me is just salty lolz tests were easier than the hw (the hw is 1000x harder ong). lots of reading doe fr + hw optional
class was graded by 45% midterm 1 (midterm 2 cancelled bc of strike) and 55% final. hw assigned but not graded. lectures are based off the textbook. he posts his lecture notes on canvas. just do problems from the textbook if u wanna do well on the exams. curve is alright def helps.
The class was based on two exams, the midterm and the Final. Usually based on two midterms and the final but due to the strike that did not happen. Therefore if you do bad on one you have to do really well on the others, the curve is not very generous. I was not able to understand his lectures well and the homework did not help with exams at all.
the worst pls dont take him if you dont have to. he uploads all of his notes on cavas and they make no sense. he just wrote gibberish on the board that i never understood so i just didnt got to class. had to teach myself all of the material through yt. grade is based on 2 midterms and 1 final nothing else. do hw, some will likely be on the test.
I believed that Professor Soshnikov was an incredibly decent man who genuinely cared about his students. I appreciated how quickly he responded to emails. However, I detested the way he assigned grades. Only one midterm (45%) and one final (55%) were given. It was quite tense. I questioned whether I would even pass the course.
Lectures were hard to understand at times. Homework is not collected or graded. Grade for the class is determined by your scores on 3 tests. A lot of people I knew said they were struggling in the class and confused by the lectures. The mean score on our final exam was 39/110 (before curve). Don't recommend for those without prior calc experience.
Professor Soshnikov was always concise within his lectures, but sometimes I felt that he rushed through some concepts that ended up appearing on the final. Also, due to the TA strike there ended up only being a midterm and a final going into the gradebook. He was always available during office hours though, and was clear in his course expectations.
This is a teach yourself class. All his notes come directly from the textbook. His midterm/final questions are literally derived from textbook example problems. His notes don't make sense and he has a strong accent, making it hard to understand him. However, he does curve VERY generously. That's really the only reason how I passed his class.
He didn't go through lessons properly(rushing them most of the time), so I left each lesson confused, having to teach myself at home with the textbook. For the final, he said we'd get credit for trying problems, but that didn't happen. It was graded by three TAs(on strike) with different/inconsistent rubrics he didn't look over.
I liked that he gave the basics of concepts, but to really understand, you have to read the book. He writes major ideas and a couple examples on paper and posts them to Canvas; his lectures are just him rewriting the paper on the whiteboard. Grade is based on 2 midterms and the final. He holds office hours on Zoom.
I enjoyed lectures. They were structured and came from his written lecture notes. He was always available after lecture. He stayed true to the book which means READ THE BOOK AND DO ALL THE Qs. They were much harder than his tests were. I am a bit upset at how the finals went due to the strike, but the curve was fat and he did overall good.
Homework is not graded. He follows the textbook very closely and its better just to learn from the book yourself. He gave practice questions for exams that were similar to the actual test, but the grading rubric seemed inconsistent. Grade is based on 2 Midterms and a Final. Does curve. An okay teacher but you will end up teaching yourself
Soshnikov had a pretty thick accent which made it kinda hard to properly hear and understand him during lectures. His midterms/final were a little on the harder side and your grade was entirely dependent on them. However, when it came to re-grading, he was pretty lenient and usually gave back many points.
Thick Russian accent and continuous mumbling makes it tough to understand what he's saying. Not accessible outside of class really. Solutions to homework and midterms were rather unclear and often times saying we did this in class( not really a solution. Midterms were really hard. Final was fairer but still hard. I would avoid if can.
Accent wasnt bad as people say. Lowkey funny. Grades: 90pt midterm(2) + 135pt final. Exam q's are exactly taken from the book so do the homework! EXTREMELY good curve (35% to get a C- in the class and anything higher is a better grade). Records lectures. Im projected to get an A- after self studying and not going to class - no calc background in hs
everyone talks about the chem's gulacurve but nobody is talking about calc's soshnikurve. he has a REALLY REALLY good curve that makes up for his decently hard tests and accent (that i didn't think was too bad).
Worst professor I have taken so far. Lectures were useless. He taught a lot of theorems but barely provided examples. If you take this class be prepared for a lot of self studying. Do not recommend at all.
Run away. The worst professor I've ever had so far. The accent's very hard to understand. He only teaches half of the topics. It's basically a self-teaching course. I went to every 9 am lecture and got very little out of them. 90% of the learning was on my own. Exams are tough. The only good thing is the fat curve because everyone fails without it.
Dr. Soshnikov has a thick accent. His lectures are not well organized and mostly focused on proving the formulas. Good thing is he doesn't grade the homework. The exams are not too difficult and he gives a generous curve. You could take this class, enjoy the curve, and attend the 21C co-class rather than his lectures.
The Soshnikov slander is unwarranted. Thick-ish accent but easy to get used to if you go to lecture. Lectures are pretty great (sometimes feel unorganized), and he focuses on the motivation behind the topics. Midterms were alright, final was a lot tougher, but he curves decently and is very understanding. Genuine guy who wants to see you succeed.
great professor, huge curve, study hw and practice test and u will pass
