I loved my anthro class. You do have one 8-10 page paper to write, but it really wasn't all that hard. He uses clickers in class to make sure people are actually going, but all of the questions are opinion based and you get points for them. Overall I would reccomend taking this class.
ANTH 23 is an insanely boring class that will clear your DEI requirement. If you are a science/math major, you will find this class insanely dull and boring. You are tossed into a room with a bunch of insanely liberal people who are offended at the slightest mention of ideas that are not left-leaning. Alex is a cool guy and very nice though. Easy A
Professor Stewart is pretty awesome. He engages with students a lot during lecture by discussing the clicker questions. You can see it's imperative to him that all students should feel comfortable to voice their opinions--however disagreeable--and let the class soak in the lesson. Concerning exam grades, the TAs, not the professor, hold the power.
Pretty easy class. If you're good at memorizing terms you'll be fine. The only slightly difficult thing is the research paper, but they don't expect it to be a masterpiece (they care more about content than the quality of the writing). There's a lot of articles to read, but honestly I don't think many people actually read them.
Reading 3 books simultaneously, but all academically relevant. Stewart classroom style raises the educational standards. He keeps class analytically engaged in the dissection of academic thought. All assignments creatively intertwine textbook and lectures. Professional. An asset to the community.
His lectures are basically the readings. This was his first year teaching MMW but he was previously a TA. Grading is pretty weird. People only come for the clicker questions that count. He gives a study guide but his essay questions are pretty ridiculous, some were hypothetical and some asked for 5 sources. Would not recommend for MMW professor
Although his lecture delivery was eh, I thought this class wasn't too bad. His tests were fair and I feel enlightened about world religions. He knows his history, especially relating to Islam. I just wish he were a more peppy lecturer. He also assigns way too much reading.
He was my professor for MMW 12 last Winter quarter and thought he was good professor overall as he knows the materials very well. However, I had him as a TA for MMW 14 in Summer Session 1 and he graded writings VERY DIFFICULT. I would skip him as a TA if possible. Good luck to anyone having him as a TA as he required more things than the professor.
I took his MMW 122 class during summer session and I know since it's summer it is more condensed but Jesus he assigned so many articles to read that was not humanly possible. Every lecture you are suppose to ready about 8-12 articles which range in number of pages from 1-30 His lectures are rather boring and monotone although he seems passionate.
Professor Stewart is awesome! Very passionate and knowledgable about what he teaches, and makes everything engaging. Easy class to fulfill the DEI requirement, but a little boring at times. Lectures and discussions are mandatory, but clicker questions make it fun/interesting. Very easy exams and final paper. LOTS of reading, but fine without it
He changed my view on rights and ethnic disparities, which as a STEM major, are usually views I don't care about. His lectures made me sleep sometimes, but he explains the terms and social constructs well. For a DEI class, I wish I picked another though. Along with a midterm and final, you have a proposal and final research interview paper. Easy A.
The more work intensive ANTH 23 professor. If possible, choose the other professor or select a different DEI course. The material is self explanatory and his lectures aren't interesting. Grades depend mostly on the midterm, essay, and final. Not that much work but time consuming; discussions are practically a waste of time but mandatory.
Don't listen to the haters, attend every lecture and actually bother to spend a couple hours studying before the test and you will do fine, the final paper is a bit of a chore yes but it's fair. Try to have the minimal care about the material and you will do well in the class.
If you don't want to read, go to his lecture. He'll just summarizes and tells you what the reading is about.
Anth 23 , Alex is pretty chill tbh he gives iclicker questions so just make sure to go to class, but you do not really have to take notes since he puts the lecture slides on triton ed. He gives one midterm, a final, and a paper. The midterm is easy, just make sure not to wait last minute for the paper cause its low-key a lot of work.
The topics covered in this class are multifaceted, extremely complex issues. If you actually care about the subject I recommend taking a different professor. Alexander often grossly oversimplified topics and used misleading information frequently in his power points.
His lectures can be kind of boring but his clicker questions keep the class interesting enough.
Chill professor. A LOT of reading and you kind of have to do the reading to have an opinion (don't be that person that don't know what they are talking about and make a comment in lecture). Open to hearing opinions of students.
Stewart teaches a class on a touchy subject in a very fair manner. He could easily impose his biases on the class, but he chooses to present both sides of an issue equally. I took ANTH23 for a DEI req and wasn't looking forward to getting politics shoved down my throat, but Prof Stewart earned my respect. Easy to talk to and a cool guy, too.
Hes a great professor and wants to help those who want it and seek help. He is easy to pay attention to and his lectures are quite entertaining and fairly interesting.
He's pretty chill. His lectures are pretty interesting. The only thing to beware of are the readings you have to do after each class, about 20 pages long sometimes. You also have to participate in an online discussion once a week. If you like debating then this class is for you but if you take this class, i recommend just skimming the readings.
30% of your grade solely depends on attending lecture for clicker questions, attending discussions, and posting regularly for online discussions . Put in a little effort and you can easily get an A, the material isnt that confusing its just a matter of reviewing material a few days before your midterm or final! Theres also a paper but its easy
You can easily tell Stewart is passionate about this stuff. He strongly encourages student participation. There is a LOT of reading but he provides the materials for you, and you can get through it without reading any of it. Just skim over them for exams, and pay attention to lectures. The final paper is a lot, but there is a lot of freedom for it
You can tell he is very passionate about all of this. It is very rewarding at the end if you do all the readings and films. There's 1-2 films every week and I appreciated most of them. I expected an easy DEI class when I walked in. It is more work than I expected but I do not regret taking his class. His lectures are fun most of the time!
Grade depends mainly on your final paper (& how nice your TA is). Mandatory lecture & discussion attendance. Lots of reading but they are repetitive so you can read the intro/conclusion for each reading and know enough to do well on midterm/final. Overall a boring class but good prof
In the end, your grade depends on your TA but this prof was great! Clicker questions every class so you need to attend. Uploads lecture slides online. No textbook needed! He posts material online that you need to read but he discusses in class anyway. 1 Midterm. Class is a lot better if you participate.
I love the professor, but hated the class. Grade is based on attendance, midterm, final, and a 6-10 page paper. If youre taking this class for an easy A, dont because theres a lot more work then you think. A ton of reading to do if you want to do well, but I ended up not reading anything after week 2 and settled for a B
Professor Stewart is a funny lecturer, but this class is not an easy A. I feel like it mainly depends on your TA, but even if your TA is an easy grader there is still quite a bit of work to do like long readings, and essay, 2 midterms, weekly posts on the discussion board.
Professor Stewart is a great and interesting lecturer. He conveys the material really well and keeps the class engaged through clicker questions. That being said, my TA was the most uninteresting person this side of the Mississippi, which honestly isn't the fault of the professor. On top of that, the TA seemed to randomly assign grades.
Clearly just repeats what he watches on network television on repeat to convince himself.
Most of the content is interesting and culturally enlightening; I took it for the DEI requirement. Do go to discussions and lectures because attendance is mandatory! I could have easily gotten an A if I just showed up to all the discussions. The midterm and final are relatively easy the the final paper is ok, just don't procrastinate.
Professor Stewart is currently one of my favorite professors at UCSD. All his lecture material was very interesting and engaging. There is an interview project which was pretty cool and his test, although a little nerve racking, are set up so you can get the most points possible. Would definitely recommend!
You do have to go to lecture because of clicker attendance, but the lectures aren't boring. I took the class for the DEI requirement, and it was about what I expected, nothing too complex and a fair midterm/final. There was a final paper, but that wasn't too hard either. Try to do most of the readings.
The content isn't hard to understand, but the lectures were boring. Make sure to go to discussions because they're graded and don't procrastinate on the final paper. I'm pretty sure the tests and the paper are pretty much all graded by your TA and not by the professor, so make sure to participate during discussions.
Straightforward class, how interesting lecture is is based on how much you care about social and racial issues. Stewart teaches well and makes you think critically about topics. Most of the class is centered around discussions, if you participate you'll do fine. There's a big final paper that has a difficult prompt, but it's not the worst.
Great lecturer! I took him for ANTH 23 and found the lectures as well as his method of explaining them as extremely interesting. While there is a lot of readings, you can usually skim through and be fine
Professor Stewart held very interesting topics in lectures that I never considered of thinking much about. It's a very entertaining course and by far one of the easiest classes I have taken. I put minimal effort into this class, but I end up with an A. Just put effort into the class and you'll be guaranteed an A.
This class has a lot of interesting material, but lectures can be kind of dry if you're not really paying attention. There're readings due for every lecture and you do a discussion post once a week. There are a lot of papers, but if you start ahead of time (especially with the interview paper) then it's nothing to worry about.
Overall, Stewart is an amazing choice for ANTH23 (for DEI credit). He's a really friendly, easy to talk to, and caring dude. Thought he did a good job not keeping it preachy. Only difficulty with the class were the readings each week (prepare to spend some time) but its mainly conceptual. Easy/Fun if remotely interested in subject matter.
Stewart is a great choice especially if you're looking to fulfill your DEI. The weekly readings are the hardest part of the class but they're usually interesting which makes up for how long they take. His lectures were always interesting and it was pretty easy to get good grades.
Was very knowledgeable about the subject and understanding in the online environment. Lectures are all recorded and can be watched at convenience, discussions were genuinely engaging (even via zoom) and mandatory.
The only B I received in my major. I worked extremely hard & wrote very good papers/final exam. He marked me down for "not citing my work." Suffice to say, I always cite. Rarely available outside of class & lectures were a whole bunch of nothing. He's definitely a character, possibly why he is well liked. Sadly, that doesn't make a good educator.
Very sweet and understanding of difficult student circumstances. Readings were amazing.
One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. Goes through a wide range of topics and cultures, and is fairly discussion-heavy (but if you're shy like me, you'll still survive). All readings are provided or you can easily find pdfs of them, and they were actually all really cool to learn about/discuss. Prof Stewart is amazing, too!
Really nice professor and material is super easy to follow along! Makes the course super interesting & the readings are also very very interesting, which I enjoyed. Would take the course with the professor again.
Professor Stewart is a fantastic lecturer and is really kind to his students, he listens when students chime in and makes the material very understandable. He is clearly passionate about his work and teaching people about his work, I would definitely recommend him to all students and would love to take more classes with him
Complete reliance on TAs for all grading (some are not properly trained for providing feedback to students) and refuses to accept any appeal for regrading, enforcing their undeserved autonomy. Comes off as down to Earth and caring in lectures, unapproachable otherwise. Vague instructions for writing papers/exams then TAs overly critical in grading.
Super down-to-earth and chill man but his lectures were so repetitive all quarter. Super vague in explaining what he expects for his papers and exams. Hybrid class.
Prof. Stewart is a passionate and interesting lecturer. Although there is heavy required reading, you can still succeed in the class by skimming over readings or skipping a couple. There is one weekly discussion board due and three essays, so it's not an impractical amount of work by any means. Overall, would recommend taking this course.
Stewart is an amazing professor who's very passionate about his class and you can tell. The subjects can get heavy, but he's great at keeping the conversation engaging/lighthearted when appropriate. You're only graded by participation, midterm, exam, a paper proposal and paper, but it's definitely manageable. Heavy reading for discussions though.
lots of reading but very interesting and mind opening especially for those who have not yet been introduced to cultural anthropology, you will definitely learn alot. I highly recommend this course if you're interested in becoming more aware of other cultures, America multiculturalism, and debating about America and the racism.
I enjoyed his class. Put in the effort and it pays off.
Such an easy class. You don't have to do any of the readings since Stewart is good at summarizing them in lecture. The papers and tests really aren't hard at all.
Get ready to write and read a lot. However, the lectures and content are interesting. Not an "easy" class, but it is definitely a solid choice if you're looking to learn a lot and fulfill your DEI requirement.
LOTS OF READING most of it is scientific articles with some documentaries. A lot of the lectures felt redundant and material repeated which made it a little boring. Grades come from discussion posts, midterm, final, group project and an essay. Midterm and final are pretty easy just short answer and essays. Took for DEI, wouldn't recommend.
Think of ANTH23 as a history class with some anthroprological papers in between. The lectures really don't have an impact on the grade except for the midterm and final, and are more like history classes. The class is heavily TA based for the 3 major writing assignments which make up most of the grade along with the tests and weekly discussion posts
It seems like he is very willy-nilly and the expectations for assignments are extremely vague. Skip class and you definitely won't pass because his slides are mostly pictures and some quick bullet points that don't make any sense unless you hear him explain during lecture. Lots of reading homework as well. Would not take him or this class again.
Prof. Stewart is a very chill prof. His grading, rubrics, and instructions for assignments are somewhat vague. Lecture and readings are a pivotal part of the class (the readings are VERY long!) and it is important to pay attention and participate! It's hard to connect concepts because this course in general is up to interpretation.
A lot of this class is graded by your TA, and it is almost entirely dependent on writing. There are weekly canvas discussions, and pretty hefty readings, but the lecture and lecture slides are really good at summarizing. That being said, lecture is not mandatory, but is really informational.
Do not take this class, there are way better options, especially if it is for a DEI requirement. Just in general very uninspiring and incompetent Professor/TA.
He is a pretty laid back teacher. The class I had basically just do discussions and your work that he assigns then the class would go through smoothly. He will help as long as you go ask. Lecture wise, he does try to explain the readings more thoroughly but it did not help me.
He's actually a pretty chill professor but his lectures are a bit boring and early in the morning. This class is an easy A or B, coming from someone who hates writing and reading. Alot of readings but you only do a discussion post a week and the midterm and final expect you to know key words you learn in lecture/in the reading.
Prof. Stewart is engaging, funny, and really passionate. HOWEVER, lectures and readings are important for this class (readings are so long, so sometimes I would look up summaries lol). Grades come from discussion posts, midterms, final(s), group projects, and an essay(s). Midterm and final are pretty easy just short answers and essays.
A couple of short essays (2-3 pages) and a final group paper (7-10 pages). Took for the DEI requirement and pretty easy. TAs gave really helpful feedback for the group paper (there's a preassignment proposal). Cool guy.
Stewart is a good professor overall. However, he does assign a lot of readings for homework. You'll need to read an article to complete discussion homework every other day, so whenever you have a class you should have your homework completed by then. His classes are fairly early and his midterm and final are essays or short answer questions.
Prof. Stewart is really passionate and calm. Lectures and readings are very important and can be a lot of information to digest. Midterm and final questions are all based off key words from lectures. Pretty easy A or B and honestly an interesting subject.
ANTH 23 in F22 was disrupted by the strike but up until then the lectures and discussions were mandatory, readings were tested on the exams, there were a couple papers, and the material was pretty outdated. The prof also made some questionable comments but encouraged discussion in class. I would not recommend this class overall.
Great professor, very interesting lectures and even though there is a lot of reading, the articles are interesting. Took this class for my DEI credit and definitely learned a lot, likes to talk with students during office hours on subjects related to course material.
Although the teacher is really nice and quirky the topic of the class was kind of boring and hard to get into. However, the teacher is really understanding and due to the TA strike our final could only help increase our grade. Graders are easy.
Class does not have a crazy lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory because they are recorded. He does have iclicker questions but the points can be replaced with attendance questions He makes you replay twice a week to questions on readings you read that week. Final paper.
Professor Stewart was very kind and understanding during the TA strike last year. Although lectures were mandatory, the assignments are not very difficult. There's a paper, midterm, final, and group project. The midterm was open-ended and the group project was interesting because we get to choose the topic. Highly recommend the class and professor!
I think the class overall and the professor was pretty chill. There was one group project and that was it. As long as you follow the readings that he assigned you to read and do the exams you would get the grade you want.
Actually interesting class. The grading was weird at least to me. Exams are easy (open note), but the final project is heavy since it is supposed to be a group project, but he assignments it individually. You can fulfill attendance by going to class or doing the discussion for that day.
i didnt find the lectures interesting but hes good at teaching and his class is pretty easy when it comes to assignments and tests. the only issue i had w the class was the way certain things were weighed. other than that id definitely take the class w him again, easy A id say
I loved this class and prof, he is very knowledgable and knows his stuff. Beware, your grade is almost solely dependent on essays, but he is a very easy grader in my opinion. Exams and midterms are take-home!!! TAKE THIS CLASS!
Overall a very interesting class, with a flexible, well-educated professor. Structure of class is done well, but pretty writing intensive. Several long essays and midterm & final are timed essays as well. Material is something that everyone should learn about regardless of major, so it is a good DEI course, just be aware of amount of writing.
Overall good professor, the class isn't very hard. There are two midterms which are both online and you should be well prepared as long as you attend lectures. Discussions are also mandatory. Would definitely recommend if you're trying to fulfill your DEI requirement.
-3 papers due during the quarter - 1 midterm and 1 final - exams are open note. - discussion sections and attendance are mandatory - always allows for discussion of material in class - uses I clickers in class attendance
This class was really easy. Workload included one discussion post + response a week, 3 papers (2 being extremely short), a midterm (online/open note), and a final (also online/open note). Lecture attendance was mandatory (iclickers), but there was always an asynchronous assignment. I took it for the DEI requirement. Overall not bad, but not fun.
Attendance to lectures is part of your grade (easy 10%). Lectures are super boring and, if you did the reading, not super informative. Grade is based on attendance, 3 papers, a midterm, and final. grading is fair and if you spend time on your writing you should get an A
This class was a bit of work as there are a few papers, weekly discussion posts + readings, midterm, and final though it was the easiest grading I've had. The amount of work don't top of other classes was a bit much at times though I only skimmed the reading when I had to do a discussion post. The topics were interesting enough.
Vague instructions on assignments, mandatory and dull lectures. Lots of reading for weekly discussion posts. Exams consists of writing short essays in a small amount of time. However, very accessible outside of class and seems to know his stuff.
Easy class. I clickers are used but you're able to miss up to 5 and just do an easy assignment. There is a bit of readings but they're all covered during lecture so you don't have to go too in depth into them. Only assignments are 2 discussions each week and then there's a midterm, a paper, and the final.
Approachable professor in a lot of ways even during lecture. Encourages/gives a lot of opportunity for students to give opinions on subject matters. Attendance is somewhat mandatory unless you want to do alternate assignment. So I felt it was lecture heavy mainly due to the fact I really did not want to do alternate writings.
He is not a qualified professor.
There are few writing assignments but they're graded very easily. Just one long paper, a short one, and the midterm and final. The lectures are interesting but I took them as a 8am so I found it difficult to focus but he knows his stuff. He is very approachable in his office hours and overall it is an easy relaxed class.
Stewart is a caring and light-hearted individual, and it shows through his lectures. Sometimes they are a bit boring, but only because they are long. He only has one midterm and no discussions, however quite a few papers (only 2-3 pages). Everyday before class there is a discussion post, which doesn't sound awful but the readings are longggg.
Professor Stewart is super nice and grades pretty lightly. The only 'homework' is reading and replying to a discussion post before lectures, which can be kind of repetitive and long. Three main papers (one being 7-10 pages) and two tests. Lots of writing but the content is really important and puts a lot of stuff into perspective.
A total of 3 papers but super easy and short except for final paper but also rlly easy, all graded by TAs. Weekly discussion posts before lecture and readings that go along with it, lectures talk about the articles. The coursework is not hard AT ALL, easy A+ for credit/GEs. However, mandatory lectures with iClickers but it's all opinion based.
If you are a stem student, do yourself a favor and avoid ANTH 10 unless you're prepared to read three 30-page papers per week. Some TAs are lenient with grading while some are strict, so you're gambling whether or not you're gonna have an easy time in this class. Far too tedious for an entry level DEI course.
Pretty chill dude, attempts to provide many perspectives on heavy topics. Three major papers about a research topic of your choosing all 3+ pages each, the final paper being 6-9 pages. TAs do most of the grading. Attendance is mandatory but iclicker app is used and/or remote during class. Overall rec
Workload is a LOT (if you actually do all of the readings for the bi-weekly discussion posts) but content was super interesting. Lectures sometimes felt really long but professor tried to make them interesting. iClickers were used for attendance & participation, grading was easy, and tests were chill.
Discussion posts before class based on that day's reading. iClickers required for attendance, goes over a lot of info in lectures but are podcasted. One midterm and one final based on second half of quarter. A few writing assignments throughout quarter, final interview paper at end of course. I didn't put as much effort and got a B+.
ANTH 23, Professor Stewart is very passionate about discussing American Multiculturalism and the class wasn't difficult if you read the material weekly. He is super chill and open to questions during lectures. The discussion sections are a little boring, but overall, I would recommend taking him for any ANTH class.
Lectures were drab, he wants participation but it's hard in early classes, attendance requires iClickers. No point in doing readings if you can BS pretty well on the two exams, just memorize which papers are for what ideas. Discussions were required and pointless. Discussion posts required with little purpose as well.
Professor was chill but some of the things he said could come off as offensive or controversial. His class was really repetitive and can come off as boring at times. His TA wasn't the best at communicating, he often cancelled office hours when he would require us to go to them, because of this it was hard to communicate about final project.
Very passionate and knowledgeable professor. DB posts and very long readings before every class but you really just need to read a page or two. About 3 or 4 papers and then some more writing on exams which was easy to get done as long as you have some sort of opinion/outlook on a certain topic that you can explain. Super easy A
Good Good Good
Knowledgeable and engaging. Assignments are pretty straightforward
Lectures are engaging and helpful. Slides have pictures you can relate to. You read around 30-45 pages of dense language every week, takes sometimes 3 hours to finish. Maybe just not good at his class but it's pretty difficult. Great lecturer though, MIGHT take class with him again if less reading. Enroll with caution. If it's your thing go for it.
Readings were long at times, but you can get away with reading only a few pages. Class is writing heavy: 3 essay assignments and essays were part of the exams. If writing isn't your thing I'd maybe avoid. He's a good lecturer though, class was always interesting. Uses clickers for attendance. TA's were slow on grading at times.
Such a cool guy. He's super passionate about everything and is very approachable. Lots of reading before lectures, attendance mandatory, every assignment/exam is writing. You can get by without too much effort -- it's not that deep. My TA made this class a much bigger deal than it was.
I doubt anyone would have a problem w/ this professor. His lectures are good, but boring IMO. However, sometimes the videos he plays are funny. The discussions were alright, not mandatory (i think, she takes attendance but its not graded). The work is minimal, just discussion post every night. Only thing is just be prepared to have an iClicker!
Lectures weren't amazing but prof is nice, readings before each lecture are pretty easy, two papers with lots of guidance from your ta, midterm and final are easy but just need to be familiar with the readings!
all content is in lecture, discussions are useless. he doesn't grade anything, so ur grade is dependent on ur TA. its a chill class for ur dei req., but if you end up getting a bad TA just be ready to write rlly well. you have to do a disc. post before each lecture but that is rlly all the homework he gives.
Class has a moderate amount of busy work but solidly easy. Pay attention to lecture and skim/briefly read the readings and you virtually don't have to study for exams. The exam averages are 90-95% so are the paper averages. He grades pretty lax just give it your all and don't use AI you will do well in this class. He's a super kind and great prof.
Discussion posts 2 times a week, attendance mandatory, three papers, and midterms has 1 essay, final has 2. Lectures were interesting but for 80 minutes straight I often fell asleep. You don't need to read readings fully. I skimmed 3-5 pages on long ones and snored away in class. You'll easily get away with an A if writing is your thing :)
I don't actually like writing so this was hard for me. The midterm and final are all timed writes and there's 3 essays due over the quarter. Discussions were bothersome because the assigned reading were 10-20 pages twice a week. I'd take Prof Stewart again but not ANTH 10. This course is also comparable to ANTH 23, same format and all.
