Dr. Alex is the best kind of professor - down to earth, incredibly informative, and truly wants you to succeed. The lectures are well organized and always put online. The exams are difficult, but are always curved by 5 points or so, and the final is an optional opportunity to replace your lowest exam grade.
Paxton is a very nice Prof, but what she teaches in class isn't what you are quizzed on the the exams. All exams are MC and is based off applying knowledge. She does curve a lot, around 5 pts every exam. If looking for an easy A, this is not the class.
Alex Paxton is the best professor I have this year. You can tell she cares about the students and wants them to do well. There is a lot of material gone over in class. Exams are not the easiest(drops lowest one). read textbook, attend lecture, & study pretty well A. if you dont B+ max. decent extra credit though quizzes and pysch study
If I could go back I would have taken any other psych prof. The exams are all application of material, and the materials range from lecture, to textbook, to supplementary readings. You have to put so much time and effort into this class and you will still get an okay grade, for a gen ed do not take this PROF.
Paxton is very nice and is clearly very knowledgeable about psychology. However, she talks extremely fast. Her exams are also hard af. I would study all of the slides + read the txtbook and I would still come out of the exams feeling like I hadn't studied at all. She had to curve our last exam 27 points because it was so hard, so there's that.
Even though I got an A in this class, it was still miserable for a basic general psych class. Best way to prepare for exams is to make concept maps and relate all the info together. Make sure to do all the bonus quizzes and participant pool as the extra credit is necessary! Also read supplementary articles and watch all the videos she posts!!
The exams are ridiculously specific and you basically have to memorize the entire chapter that she tests you on. Dont count on the exams being based on what she actually focuses on in lecture. The whole smarty pants curve is ridiculous because if the highest grade is a 98, everyone only gets 2 points added. Basically, do the bonus to pass.
HORRIBLE class. Exams are way too hard for a GENERAL psychology course. Do not take this class. Paxton makes it impossible to do well on the exams and I fell asleep in almost every class. Pick any other professor- for your own good.
Her exams are difficult but she curves them A LOT. She gives up to 20 points extra credit and the final is optional and can replace your lowest exam grade if needed. She definitely is very passionate, but she does speak way too fast when she lectures.
Even though her exams were pretty difficult, if you study enough you will do fine. She gives big curves too which helps, and lots of extra credit options. She is a very nice person and seems really passion about psychology. If you can set aside enough time to study hard for the exams I would definitely recommend taking it with her.
Overall, Psych 1100 is very difficult regardless of who you take it with here. I will say that she is ok with lectures at best but her exams are impossible. I am a straight A business student and this is way too difficult for an entry level class. The curves are actually garbage and at best gave me 7 extra points. This class has killed my GPA.
I am an engineering major so I am a pretty good student, but this class is terrible. She talks way too fast, you cant take notes fast enough, reading the book doesnt help, and her tests contain material that she doesnt even teach and then expects you to know, but doesnt tell you you need to know it. Take any professor for psych BUT Paxton.
For an entry level class this was way harder than it needed to be. Her exams are nearly impossible and she talks way too fast for her own good. You have to memorize at best 4 chapters of information for the exams, and the curve she gives does not help at all. She grades exams on points out of 125, not 100. Careful of that when you see your grades.
Paxton is really nice but I got nothing out of her lectures and stopped going after the first exam. Got an A on both the 1st and 2nd exam and failed the third exam. The exams are way too specific and use a lot of weird vocabulary that doesn't appear on her slides or in the textbook. The only reason I did well in this class was because of AP Psych
This woman nearly ruined my GPA because her exams are impossible, she always needs us to read the book and her lecture is painful, exhausting, and unattractive. Yes, she uses this smarty pants curve but it doesn't make anything better because, under her overwhelming and confusing test circumstance, we need 20% increase instead of 4 %.
Take any other professor. Exams are way too specific and on things she doesn't teach/ aren't in the book. Exams are so specific and long theres barely enough time to finish. Her curve also does not help. They are 5 points at best. Exams are way too hard for an entry level class and make no sense. Killing my GPA.
I would reccomend taking psych with ANYBODY other than Paxton. The exams are beyond difficult. You have to read the textbook, go to "optional" lecture, do supplementary readigns, and the exams are still impossible. She wont answer anything over email and if you miss monday office hours dont expect to see her that week. She flys through material.
Her tests are way too hard compared to what/how she teaches. You will get several test questions that she did not teach in class or even on her slides. So you have to truly read the book, watch all videos, and readings she assigns. She assigned a challenging 30 page reading and a lot of people did poorly on the exam. she killed my gpa
She says her class is non mandatory but she will mention things in class not on slides or in the book and ask questions about it in her exams. She also asks questions about things in the book and other assigned readings and videos that she doesn't teach in the class. Avoid her at all costs.
Be prepared to read, attend lecture, and study well to pass this class. The 3 exams (about 75% of final grade) are all application based, which means you have to really know the material to do well. Bonus is that she offers extra credit, makes the final optional, is a dynamic lecturer, and answers questions thoroughly during office hours.
If you want to learn the material this class is for you! The professor is an amazing lecturer but more than that she seems to care about her students. She is very approachable and will help you whenever you need it. I recommend taking this class if you want to understand the material not just regurgitate it.
Lectures are fast-paced, but slides are posted after class, even though they're not too readable. Unengaging. Exams much more difficult than anything else, seem to test a lot of "optional" material. I didn't like psychology going in, but this class confirmed that I really dislike it. Only upside is that the textbook was open access and free.
Take another professor... they all provide thorough study guides showing what you will be tested on whereas I have over 30 pages of typed notes that likely wont even cover enough of the exam material
Don't ever take this class. Paxton lectures wicked fast and doesn't allow enough time to write notes. The lectures are boring and tedious. The exams are impossible - with the curve I managed to get a C on each exam. She allows a cheat sheet to be used on the exams - might as well not have it cause the questions are so specific no notes can help.
Claims lectures aren't mandatory, yet slides are empty with only a few photos and no definitions. Allowed a one page cheat sheet into exams but that doesn't really help because questions are way too specific. Exams were extremely heavy with material from guest lecturers.
Dr. Paxton focuses on big data, ethics, and cognition. This beginner PSYC class is going to talk a lot about biopsychology and I'd recommend it if you're interested in that field. She goes fast during her lectures and the slides don't make sense sometimes, but if you do the textbook readings and pay attention you'll do well.
Her lecture slides are messy and don't help. Her exams are close to impossible for people who didn't take psych in high school. Questions on them are very specific and there's no way to prepare for them. Doesn't answer questions after class, just tells you to go to office hours. She doesn't tell you what's on the exam, you have to study everything.
I cannot advise against this class / professor enough. The pace of her lectures make it very hard to take notes, and the slides are useless to study from. 75% of the the final grade is determined by extremely difficult exams. She posts no review materials or study guides. A supposed 'GPA booster' ended up being my hardest class. Avoid at all costs.
As a psych major who has taken other types of psych classes and exceeded in them, I am warning you at how AWFUL this class is. Paxton is horribly disorganized and talks way too fast in her lectures. She doesn't offer study guides, so you're pretty much screwed for her exams. Please protect your mental health and choose someone else for this class.
Worst class. interesting topic but exams are way too hard. Do not take this class if you want to keep your sanity.
This class wasn't terrible. She posts the slides after every lecture but they tend to only have a few words and pictures on them so going to class can be helpful to supplement them but not always necessary. Allowed to bring sheet of paper to the test with information so really not too bad if you find a way to fit the slide information onto a paper.
Take psych 1100 with any other professor if you can. Paxton goes way too fast with her lecture slides and she makes the exams near impossible and does not give a study guide and is unclear about what to expect on the exams. This class really hurt my GPA.
Paxton is not the worst but this is not a class that you can miss and still get an A in. Her lecture slides are 90% pictures so going to class is important to get context. There is opportunity for extra credit, the exams are curved and the final is optional. I recommend doing all the readings. Exams are application-based sometimes so STUDY.
Exams are a bit of a mess, she usually focuses on lecture content but there is some info from readings. She gives 3 exams, but you only get graded for the 2 highest grades you get.
Tough professor in terms of tests. They are difficult if you haven't taken a psych course in the past before. This was intro level but it was very difficult because of the amount of content we cover throughout the semester. I recommend showing up to every lecture and doing optional final exam. Nice, but office hours are always busy with students
Professor: Nice, caring, accessible, and understanding The course: Not an easy A The exams: Dense but, you can bring a page of notes and get partial credit The textbook: Read for people/vocab/concepts (Don't buy it because she gave us a free PDF version) Lectures: Confusing out of context, so don't skip class and take notes Lab: A total joke (easy)
Paxton is a good lecturer, but she goes insanely fast and if you miss something you'll be left in the dust. Lectures are optional but if you want to do well in the class you need to go. The tests are some of the hardest ones I've taken at Uconn so be prepared to study a lot.
Don't be scared by all of the reviews!!! Paxton's exams can be a little tricky but she curves all of them. If you go to all the lectures, take good notes, and really study those notes you will definitely do fine. She also allows you to bring a page of hand written notes to the exam. There is also an optional final that can only help your grade
Her tests are unnecessarily hard. She tries too hard to focus on "application" to the point where the questions themselves are just confusing, not even the content. I did better in bio 1107 with Abbott than i did in this class with her.
She is a great professor and loves what she teaches. Very energetic and fun class to go to. The only down side is the exams are so hard and are a lot of compression and none of my 6 friends or I got a grade above a 75.
Her lectures and slides were very detailed and easy to understand. But I took it online so I think if she taught in person she might be a little fast. She is nice and passionate about the subject. Her tests haven't been too hard because they have been open note but if it wasn't, it would be really hard.
Attendance was not mandatory since class was adjusted to an online format. However, the readings you have to complete prior to watching the lecture videos, did not always match up with the lectures itself. You have to be sure to read the textbook and take your own notes. A lot of textbook material was NOT included in the recorded lectures.
I'd say this is one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. For this class she did grading bundles and they were pretty reasonable. All you have to do to get an A is pass three exams with a 75%+ and a bunch of other stuff but it's clearly laid out for you. Overall, Dr. Paxton is a solid choice.
I would scream from the rooftops about how much I love this woman. She is the most accommodating and understanding during Covid online time out of all of my professors. This semester she did grading bundles, so to get an A you need to pass a certain number of each type of assignment -each grade pass/fail. Grading is clear, lectures are interesting
The class itself is easy but her lectures are way too preachy. She's hard to listen to and difficult to understand because every other word out of her mouth is "um" and she goes on and on about unimportant information. She also tries too hard to make her exams application based. Barely even tests on actual information. She's super nice though.
Paxton seems like a genuinely nice person. She really cares about her students during this time, and for that, I really respect her. In terms of the class, it is definitely content heavy. Her lectures and the readings are both important. The specifications grading system is helpful, but her exams are application based and can be difficult.
She is nice. However, her exams are way to hard. Its a shame she doesn't make them more like her knowledge checks. She tries too hard to make the exams application based, they're awful and so hard to pass. I also do not like the grading bundles, if you get under a 75 on the exams but a 100 on everything else you automatically cannot receive an A
This class was made way harder than needed. Her exams are difficult and focus more on application than knowledge. I do not like the grading bundles as it's difficult to get an A. Below 75% is a fail on exams. There are a lot of assignments that are more like busy work. She is very nice and cares, but I don't recommend this class with her.
Paxton was a nice lady, I think she has the right idea in what type of atmosphere she wants for a class. Her workload just doesn't really reflect that. It's a lot of reading and lectures so be prepared. The way she has her grading sets up does help, but you don't really have room to slack off....
Dr. Paxton is very nice and occasionally helpful however her tests are incredibly difficult and make no sense. You only need to get a 75+ on all the tests to get an A but I would barely pass because they were so hard. She also never shows you what you got wrong so its hard to improve. Her lectures are somewhat interesting though.
Her grading "bundles" are difficult to achieve, due to the fact that you need a 75 to pass the tests, the test questions aren't easy, and the fact that you don't get to see what you got wrong. Do not take this class. Her teaching lectures online were fine, but the information on the test was not in the lectures or the book sometimes, too.
Dr. Alex is a great professor. Her class is difficult, but as long as you do the work you should be fine! If you reach out to her she is very helpful and kind. Her tests are very difficult & you need a 75% to pass. She offers many opportunities to retake & resubmit work & exams. If you stay on top of your work & do well on exams you will succeed.
If you want a professor with a fair grading system, Professor Paxton is not the professor for you. Her grading bundles are all revolved around her tests, which are extremely difficult and are most of the time not even knowledge-based. I do not recommend her as your professor if you are required to take this class.
Very understanding within the pandemic and cares a lot about her students and their performance. Grading is based on the amount of assignments you complete, and if you watch all of the lecture videos and attempt to understand the content you should easily get an A. I really liked how she ran the class in its online format, definitely recommend!
do not take this class with Dr. Alex. it is way harder than it should be for an intro level course. her grading system is terrible and makes it hard to pass the class. her exams are near impossible and her "curves" are by 4%. everything is application based. her homework is pointless as it doesn't help gain more understanding of the topics.
as a person is very nice, lectures very detailed although if this class wasn't online im not sure if i would be able to keep up. her exams are wayyyyy too hard and hard to study for.
Honestly she is a good professor but her tests are way too hard. Her grading system seems great at first glance but in reality it is horrible. Her tests have really nothing to do with what was in the lectures and even when I had all the notes it wasn't enough. All her homework is easy though and the class is easy but the tests are the worst part.
Hardest class I have ever taken! Be ready to fail this course. Grading system is awful, if you receive all A's on your assignments but don't pass any exams you fail the course. She also isn't lenient if you have personal things going on and just sends you mental health resources. All I have left to say is good luck charlie!
Her class is extremely hard and the grading contract is terrible! Even if you pass the lab section to the course and all other assignment but don't pass at least 3 exams with a 65% you will be receiving an F for the course. She also isn't very understanding if you have personal things going on during these times. Honestly, good luck.
Dr. Alex was really understanding of certain situations throughout the semester. Her tests are fine as long as you study for them. Dont forget to do any of the knowledge checks. Sometimes they dont pop up on the calendar so you have to really look for them. Most of the stuff thats covered is on the slides.
Dr. Paxton genuinely wants her students to succeed and offers review sessions and office hours. I recommend doing all the assignments that are paired with the lecture the day they are posted to stay on track. Lectures may be long but are pretty engaging. Tests are open book but you should start studying a week in advance. Not an easy nor hard class
I absolutely loved this course, and Professor Paxton definitely had some of the best lectures I've ever encountered. There is required textbook reading for the class, but it's an online textbook that's available for free.
Her grading style is complete BS. It is not fair that if u fail 1 exam that u automatically cant receive an A in the course. The grading bundles r incredibly stupid and just a reflection of her lazy teaching. She posts the lectures online instead of actually lecturing during the class, which is proof of how lazy of a professor she is. DON'TTAKETHIS
Tests are extremely difficult but were open note this semester. Bundled grades so above a 75 on all 3 exams is an A but it's not easy to obtain. She uses a reverse classroom so you don't have to be in class. She's super nice but the class is full of work and definitely not one to take if you just need an easy A.
Dont take a class with the prof. I currently have an A with her grade bundle, but if I get below a 75 (which is an F according to her) on one of the exams I have left, that could easily give me a bad grade. Dont have to go to class but you have to watch 6-8 lecture videos a week. Also never responds to emails. Wish I switched when I had the chance
I think she's trying to make things easier with the grading bundles, but it does a lot more harm than good. The workload and the exams are way too much/difficult for the level this class is. You might be better off doing this at a community college and transferring the credit. If you need to take this, take it with a different professor if you can.
She's a nice person but her grade bundles make absolutely no sense. You can fail the class even though you passed all the assignments. Just today, she failed one of my assignments because I was 2 words over the word count, so I'm here in a fit of anger right now. The readings aren't horrible but this class is near impossible to pass regardless.
Do not take this class with this professor. She makes it incredibly difficult to get an A, and wont give extra credit for anything. Going to class is optional but they don't help you learn because all lectures are done for homework online. Tests are very hard and if you fail 1 you get a D. Good luck!!
If you're looking for an easy A this class is not for you. Dr. Paxton is an extremely nice woman but her class is probably the worst I've ever taken. The grading system seems fine at first but she is not lenient with points. If you are not a good test taker DO NOT take this class. Also, there is astronomically more work given than with other profs.
Prof. Paxton is a very nice person, but she is a terrible teacher. She is doing a thing where you watch her lecture videos before class and then you "build up" on the video. I hate it, it's like having online classes all over again, not engaging or interesting. The grading is very harsh, if you fail one exam your good grade is done for.
Paxton is genuinely one of the worst professors I've ever had. She posts all of the lectures online in pre-filmed videos to use class time for 'peer engagement', which consists of around 30 out of the 250 students in the class sitting, bored and confused. She's incredibly difficult to access outside of class and assigns an INSANE amount of work.
Grade bundle system is what ultimately screwed me over. They're pass/fail (75% to pass). I kept getting 70% and would have to retake. Assignments really don't help your grade at all. Personally, I disliked her flipped classroom approach. I really don't recommend taking the course with her.
Dr. Paxton runs her class "flipped classroom" style where she posts the lectures online and the in-person "lecture" is just discussion. Many people didn't like this, but I really did. She is super enthusiastic about psych and can tell she loves the subject. I did not find exams to be that hard, but even though they are open note please STUDY.
Don't listen to some of these reviews. This prof is NOT accessible outside of class. She is nice but her grade bundles are extremely hard to maintain, especially for an into level class. There is also so much work, I ended up spending 3+ hours a day to just finish what she assigned. If you're looking for an easy gen ed, do not take this class.
Dr. Alex was quite possibly one of the worst psych professors I've ever had. She's a super nice person, very energetic, but her class structure was confusing at best and her tests are almost impossible to pass. I think I passed one this entire semester, and you need to pass all three to get an A. All of the other work is busy work and barely counts
Dr. Alex made PSYC 1100 painful. It is an intro level class, but her way of grading through grade bundles is completely unfair. You can put in the effort and show that you're trying, but you will essentially drop down a letter grade if you fail to meet her crazy expectations. Avoid if you can.
This class was quite possibly the worst class Ive taken of all time. The grading bundles are absolutely ridiculous, and are only based on exams she makes impossible for the students. I have taken multiple psychology courses in the past and still have failed almost every exam in this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
If u have a choice DO NOT take this course. The grade bundles are absolutely ridiculous, and exam passing grade is 75%!! Even if u pass on a 2nd try ur grade won't improve. Ridiculous, especially for a gen ed course. I had a joined psych major, but switched bc of this course. I've never had such a bad professor If I could rate her 0 I would.
Prof. Paxton assigns so much pointless and busy work, that essentially has nothing to do with the course, especially the leaning reflections If you do it your grade will not improve if you don't do it your grade can drop. The lectures are posted online, but are not engaging and long while the actual class time is wasted on "builing on the material"
Did not learn a single thing from this course. The grading is almost impossible in order to succeed. If you do the homework, your grade wont improve, but if you dont do it itll drop. Avoid taking Psyc1100 with Paxton.
This is one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. The grade bundles are absolutely ridiculous. She is never accessible outside of class and provides no support to her students. You cannot see any of your exam answers so there is no way to learn. I am doing better in my calc & chem class than this psych class.
Quite possibly the worst professor ever. If you don't test well, avoid this class at all costs. Just don't take this class regardless actually, quite impossible to get a good grade with her way of grading.
LOVE THE STRUCTURE! Flipped classroom, optional class discussions are VERY HELPFUL. Specific grading structure gives a lot of leeway for students. You can skip assignments and still get an A. You need to get a 75+ on 3 out of 4 open note exams but the median grade on most of the exams is a 75 so half the class doesn't pass each exam.
DO NOT take this teacher if you are enrolling psychology 1100. Her grade bundles are the worst form of grading I have ever experienced. To pass her exams you need at least a 75 but they are HARD. Loads of work and even if you get As in everything but fail the exams you will get a D at the end.
The worst professor I have ever had. Completely inaccessible, doesn't put her email in the syllabus because she doesn't want to hear from you. Failing a test is anything under 75% and if you don't achieve that you get a D. Lots of busywork most of it doesn't relate to course material. Again she is the worst professor I have had don' take her class.
If you take her class be prepared to play her games, which go by the name of "specifications grading" if you want a good grade. This means all or nothing style grading that will crush your mental health all while she pretends to care about mental health.
Grading is literally the worst thing ever. Heavily depends on tests so if u dont test well DO NOT take this class. I failed two out of three exams (below 75 is failing her exams) and my grade was a D. I even took the final exam and got an 83 and it didnt do anything to help me. I took this class in hs and made an A in it and now Im gonna cry!
If u dont test well DO NOT take this class!! U have to make a 75 or above to pass the exams. I failed 2 of the 3 exams because I made below a 75 and I did all of the assignments and got an 83 on the final and somehow have a D because of grade bundles. She never posted my actual grade until like right now so I never knew what I had in the course.
The specifications grading is more hurtful than helpful. 75 is considered "passing" on the grade bundle, and if you "fail" ONE exam, your grade drops like 4 letter grades. She is a very nice professor, but the way she structured the class is just absolutely awful. AVOID TAKING THE CLASS WITH HER, CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!
Her worst flaw is that it's impossible to get in touch with her outside of class, I loved her specification grading because I got around an 80 on all three exams but because I passed her requirement I got an A in the class. The tests are very hard though and basically your grade depends on them so if you don't do well with tests dont take the class
Paxton herself is an amazing person - she is kind & caring, however I despised her class. I went to two lectures and never went again because they were pointless, in my opinion. She does this 'think, pair, share' thing, where the entire 50 minutes is just talking to your neighbors. Tests are open note and not too hard to pass, but you should study.
She does a "flipped classroom" where you watch lectures + read before class. In class (optional) you have discussions with your peers which are not useful. She does grading bundles which are quite confusing and stressful bc she is very picky about her criteria when grading. Tests open note open internet, not too hard. Not the best not the worst.
this class made me question if i was in the right major. her grade bundles were very unfair, and the tests were very hard compared to the information given in the lecture slides. she seems nice, but she is not at all lenient with grades. if you could take this class with a different professor, do it! just thinking about this class makes me angry
I once had to email her 6 times before she responded to me and it was in regard to an exam. Terrible class, avoid at all cost
Don't take if you're bad at exams! The exams were pass/fail so if you didn't get above a 70 on the exam you failed. You could get 100 on every single assignment but if you fail the exams you will fail the class. She took forever to email back aswell.
Paxton outlined her "grade bundles" from the first day of the course which told you exactly what you needed to complete in order to get specific grades in her class. If you passed the first three exams you would not need to take the final, as you only need to pass 3 exams for an A. Exams were online and you had all day to take it, with notes.
Grading policy is awful, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Just don't enroll please....unless u want a challenging class.
This class is very frustrating. Her grade bundles are very unfair and I did not like them at all. I wish I had taken a different professor. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
A very nice person. but her teaching style is very different. It's a "flipped classroom" where you do the work on your own and are supposed to talk in-depth about it in class. You spend 50 minutes doing "Think, Pair, Shares" and really get nothing out of it. The exams are your grades If you get unsatisfactory, you get a D. Don't take this class.
Professor seems like a nice person and is very enthusiastic about psychology. However, this is a flipped classroom so going to class is pointless and you don't learn anything by going. The grade bundles are extremely confusing and unclear. Tests are extremely difficult even though they are open note and even if you do all the homework.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone who actually wants to have a career in psychology. The grade bundles are confusing and ridiculous and I have yet to actually learn a single thing from this class. Furthermore, Paxton is not the best at responding to emails. Would honestly rate a 0/5 if it were an option.
Her grading is the worst thing I have ever come across. Extremely difficult exams and she does not prepare you for them at all. Exams are open note but it does not help... she also does not curve them when half the class is failing them. For an introductory course this is ridiculous.
Definitely one of the worst professors i've ever had. Please don't take her class, especially if you aren't a good test taker. She doesn't like it when you email her so you have to email the TA which sometimes takes forever to get back to you. Her lectures are so unnecessary and her "grading modules" is what can make you fail the class to problem.
I have never met a worse professor in three years of being here.
I have never had to put so much effort into a 1000 level course in my entire college career this course is not hard however, her grading is the most outlandish, BS, unreasonable scale known to college.
Such a stressful class. Do not take this class it will drown you with work. If you do all the work outside of class you can still easily get a bad grade.
The ratings you see here are true and not dramatic. Her style of grading makes it difficult to get a good grade in this class, you either pass or you don't. Her gradebook examines way too many criteria (not just exams and hw). The exams are application-based (not easy at all). The whole "flipped classroom" idea is not ideal at all.
Avoid at all costs she is worst professor I have ever had. Her tests are impossible and they are basically the only thing you are graded on.
The grade bundles are not forgiving whatsoever try to get another professor. The only way can do well in this class is passing each exam with over a 75 without retakes. Lecture is a joke and a waste of time would not recommend going. Essentially all the work is completed at home besides small in class quizzes which can also be done at home.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Paxton treats us like middle schoolers and has implemented the WORST grading system ever. The class was boring and a lot of busy work. I didn't learn anything and only did the work to pass. I wish I had taken this class with any other professor. Do not take psych with her if you have the option.
Grading bundle system is TERRIBLE. She is unwilling to be flexible with her grading system and there is no wiggle room to improve your grade. We have to teach ourselves all the information but are forced to go to class to take knowledge checks. Waste of time, doesnt give lectures just makes you "think pair share" the entire class, not helpful
The exams are incredibly difficult and your entire grade depends on them. Your grade on the exams decides your letter grade (A-D) and all the other assignments decide if you get a + or - attached it. All these reviews are not dramatic avoid at all costs. Grading system is TERRIBLE!!!!
Actually the worst prof at uconn, u better hope you get good grades on the three exams or you will fail
I will never take another class with Dr. Paxton ever again. If you do not do well on one test, your grade drops an entire letter and it is impossible to do well in unless you have previous knowledge of psychology. She does not answer emails, and when emailing her you are supposed to give 3 reasons why you are contacting her. Avoid at all costs.
Surprised at how poor her rmp is. Her grading is strange at first, but definitely made my life easier, as I could ignore this class during times I was too busy without any effect on my grade. Her exams aren't the easiest, but you only need 75% on three to get an A so not bad. Most of the content is nearly common sense if ur a science major.
Nahhhhhhh
Weird flipped classroom. there is nothing wrong with traditional, you have to teach yourself, and nothing gets taught in class, so it's basically an online class, and the grading is weird, you either pass or fail an assignment
Absolutely the worst professor on campus. Exams determine your final letter grade and they are pass/fail which means anything below a 75 essentially gives you a zero for that exam. She does not answer emails because of her stupid "three before me" rule. If you receive her as a professor then withdraw from the class immediately.
I recently took PYSC 1000 with Professor Paxton and found it to be one of the most challenging courses I've ever taken. Paxton is a demanding teacher who expects a lot from her students. Either you pass or fail, never again will I take a class taught by her.
Her grade bundle is a joke, I thought the reviews were over the top when I decided to register for the class but I assure you they're not. AVOID THIS CLASS. What was meant to be a gen ed and the least of my worries has turned into the class with the most work, the hardest exams and one which has damaged my gpa for the semester.
The class is a "flipped classroom" where you take textbook notes for homework & submit 5 comment annotations for a grade every class. The lectures are "think/pair/shares" with no genuine instruction. Exams are open note, but are timed & require deep thought, not just definitions. The class wasn't bad, but I wouldn't take Paxton, although she's nice
The main problem with this class with this teacher is that she doesn't teach the material she makes us do OUTSIDE of the class. You need to take time out of your day to watch her online lectures so you have a chance on passing the class. Second, the tests are ridiculously hard and you need to get a 75. Bad methods and NOT understanding at all.
This is a "teach yourself" class and get thrown into exams. Prof Paxton does not teach in actual lecture and her exams are graded "satisfactory"/"unsatisfactory" in which you have to get an 75 or higher (seems easy, is not). She has "grading bundles" that make it difficult to get anything higher than a B- if you're lucky. Don't take 1100 with her.
Yeah I straight up would not take her for PSYC 1100. It's not a hard class but the grading is mind numbing. So weird and you never know where you stand until it's too late...
Do not take this class! Unclear grading, you don't know where your grade stands until the midterm and final mark (until it's too late). She is kind and will answer questions, but absolutely not worth taking. The flipped classroom teaching style is AWFUL and makes class not worth going to. Take a different professor.
The best part is when she explains in her closing email that she listens to SET evaluations but that is a flat out lie and I want my time and energy back. For the love of god and all that is holy do not take PSYC1100 with her.
doing well in this class is dependent on being organized. With exception of exams, every other bundle should be an easy A. For exams: I recommend taking in-depth notes of the lectures, and have a copy of the online textbook (the search bar on it is your friend during exam) to get a 75% or above on the exam. Use Quizlet too. Easy A on exams then
Dr. Paxton was definitely not my favorite professor. Her grade bundles are unfair and confusing, and her "flipped" classroom method is horrible. There are at least 4-5 hours of work outside of class only to go to lectures and do think-pair-shares for 50 minutes. A failing grade is below 75 and the exams are challenging. USE YOUR TOKENS!
I already wrote a review for her but I'm writing one again to help you guys avoid this terrible professor. I just took my final exam which would determine whether I finish with a C+ or an A that's how dumb her grading bundles are. You guessed it didn't get the satisfactory and so I finished with a C+. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I got A's on every assignment all semester and averaged a 74% on all exams and will still end with a C because of her grade bundles. She refuses to answer grade questions over email, and uses the "Three before me" rule. Lectures are pointless- "Flipped classroom". Exams are difficult: 30-40 multiple choice questions with only 50 minutes to finish.
Although Alexandra is really nice, her lectures are painfully unengaging and barely informative. The grade bundle is nonsense and the exams are difficult, often covering stuff we haven't discussed. Her token system is unreliable, and I've emailed her twice regarding the tokens not working with no response. DO NOT TAKE PSYC110 WITH HER.
Did all the work throughout the entire year and even made the most detailed study guides however just because I got a 73 on two of the four exams I ended up getting a C+ in the class instead of an A. Don't take it at all costs it will drop your gpa!!!
the low reviewers are just pissed that they didn't take careful notes of the textbook or have it open while taking the exam (she said we could do that). literally just take notes and you'll be fine. class is stupid because you have to go to do the knowledge checks (just need to get a 100 on one of three tries) but she doesn't teach. easiest prof.
Hilariously bad.
Will give you an F for missing the smallest part of an assignment
her teaching style is not fun at all, she doesn't teach during class time, but instead expects you to work In a group, giving you about 30 minutes to complete a quiz, learning and reflection. She grades unsatisfactory or satisfactory which is very opinion based. She doesn't really make things clear and kind of contradicts herself.
comically hard gen ed. unfair grading "bundles", never seen anything like it before, and it makes sense why NO other professors use it. unrealistic amount of work for a 1000 level class. i'm a 3.6 student and am likely ending with a C, an absolute GPA tanker. If you don't need this class, don't take it. it's that simple.
Her syllabus is the most convoluted document I have viewed during my time at UConn. Nothing is intuitive, reading is ridiculously long, and her "flipped classroom" approach is personally not my taste at all. Save yourself the distress and time.
I took this professor last year. 8 grade bundles, and I had an A in 7 of them. Got a 73, 74, 74 on three exams, and it was deemed unsatisfactory because it was below a 75. Because of these, I could "not get above a C," because the lowest grade bundle is the max grade you can get. A+A+A+A+A+A+A+C=C?
Getting A's on every assignment and averaging 74%'s on exams will give you a C in the course. On what planet does this make sense? In EVERY other course at UConn, this would give you a B+/A- range, especially in what should be a holistically graded course like 1000 level psychology. A complete joke of a class.
Horrible course. Prof is clueless and lazy. Group projects every class, horrible if you always carry as 1 mistake fails entire group. Pass/fail but "criteria" is arbitrary and just what TA feels like. Doesn't understand own material and blatantly answers questions incorrectly w 100% confidence. Exams contain vague, poorly worded questions w typos.
The class was extremely test-heavy, and the grade bundle was impossible to achieve. She was not accessible outside of class, making it difficult to get help or clarification on anything. I would not recommend taking this class with this professor if you have the option. It was a frustrating and overall horrible experience.
She is a very nice person, but that is really it You are required to go to her lectures but she talks for 10 minutes and then expects you to do a quiz and mini-group assignment about the material that you had to teach yourself. If one thing on your group work is missing you fail the entire assignment
I took this course 3 years ago with Dr. Paxton, and I still to this day talk to others about how terrible it was. Completely bizarre test bundles and tests are all application based, and she considers a 74% failing (she will NOT round up). She is a horrible professor to teach an intro course. 3000 & 4000 level classes I took weren't this hard.
Super friendly professor, but you'll have to teach yourself everything on your own time and do group assignments in class. The grade system is forgiving, since you can basically stop going to class after you finish a certain amount of assignments. If you fail something, you can submit a token to redo it. Pretty easy, but time consuming.
This class is annoying but doable. You MUST take detailed notes if you want to pass the tests (which are heavily weighted in the grading). Lots of extra credit opportunities in the form of "tokens", make sure that you do as many as possible. Don't bother emailing her, bring any questions to office hours or before/after class.
I really wanted to be optimistic about Dr. Alex, but this course is really time-consuming and difficult, even for someone taking this course as a Psych pre req. The class is taught in a way that works for a small class, NOT a 200+ person lecture. While it is not as bad as some people claim, I don't recommend taking if you JUST need a gen ed credit.
Dr. Alex was very friendly, but it was almost impossible to get an A in this gen-ed 1000-level class. The pressure and stress I had from this class alone, when I went into it thinking it would be one of my easiest since I had a background in psych, was ridiculous. Exams were so difficult even though they were take-home, open note, open book.
This class was a joke. Each class there is barely a lecture, half the time the lecture does not even relate to any of the content discussed for the module. The grading system is ridiculous and she is a tough grader. It is difficult to get in touch with her. She does seem nice but the way this class is run is very confusing and hard.
She's a nice person, but that honestly made it worse bc she graded so horribly. The class is a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis where you could get an Unsatisfactory for the smallest mistake in a multi-step assignment. A 74% on exams is a U (basically a 0), and there's a reason no other prof does this. Bad criteria for how much a student knows.
Despite Dr. Alex's friendliness, her class is structured in a confusing manner. No in-class lectures, comically time-consuming class preps, difficult tests which include content unrelated to material provided. The amount of effort used to get an "A" bundle in this gen-ed level 1000 was honestly ridiculous. Save your time & don't take it with her!
Professor Paxton despite being a very nice person has an interesting class. You basically teach yourself everything and she has this grade bundle system that is so complicated and unfair. In class you have group assignments where if you do one assignment wrong you get unsatisfactory. I would recommend NOT taking her class.
I loved this course! Dr.Alex was very enthusiastic and was happy to help any student who asked. I loved the "flipped" classroom because it made it possible to go back to lecture materials after the initial class. Class time is used for group work. The only critique I have is the grading scheme, it was very confusing.
I took extremely detailed notes of the textbook, video lectures, and lightning lectures so I could keyword search during exams since they were open notes. Yet they were still extremely difficult and I would often barely pass. Good luck if you get stuck with a bad group for projects. Also, you'll fail assignments for missing minor details. AVOID!
Save yourself a lot of pain and take PSYC 1000 with any other professor. There's a quiz and a group project every single class, and the projects are graded harshly. If you get stuck with a bad group, you're screwed. The grade bundles are super confusing and make it difficult to get an A in the class. Unreasonable amount of work for a 1000-level.
if you do one thing wrong in an assignment then you get unsatisfactory which means you get no partial credit for the assignment and might have to redo it. you will have to try to find out what exactly you did wrong because she won't tell you. there is barely any teaching in class so be prepared to teach the material to yourself beforehand.
Not as bad as people make it seem. For homework you have to leave 5 "high quality" comments on readings but they were not bad once you got the hang of it. Open note, no lock down browser exams. I did not find them to be very hard. Actives were annoying but you have so many opportunities to redo them if you get unsatisfactory on your first try.
Dr Alex is although very nice, she has a ridiculous grading policy. Everything is "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory" which is basically pass or fail. Lectures are for group work, and all lecture material is done on your own which is very time consuming. If you fail one of the exams, you need to scramble to pass the retake. Way too much work.
Horrible grader. Specifications grading ruined my grade in this class. It is so hard to get an A because she is insanely strict with grading and specific with what exactly she's looking for on in class assignments. All in class assignments are groupwork and if your group is bad, be prepared to do all the work or fail.
The flipped classroom and the grade bundle setup might seem like a lot. But, it's not as bad as it seems, if you keep on top of things, you'll be alright. Dr. Paxton's pretty chill about it all. All you have to do is ask her at the end of class to look over your assignment (Learning Relection) she 100% would. Thats a big way to ensure you get an A.
She is very nit-picky about grades, and if you do not do everything exactly to her standards every day, do not expect to get above a B+ in this class.
NONONO. do NOT take this class. You could go to every single lecture, do every single assignment, do well on every single exam, I DID, and still receive a poor grade. She grades things as satisfactory or unsatisfactory, and if u get an US it is a 0. She is a VERY hard grader and will give u an US for the smallest thing. DROP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.
I think I skipped this class once when I was sick, and I did all my work, but because the grading was either satisfactory or unsatisfactory it was absolutely impossible to maintain a good grade bc one little mistake you would get the whole thing wrong. Assignments were also very confusing and you have to teach urself the content outside of class.
If you need to take this class, wait and take it with another professor, I regret not listening to RMP. Everything is a U or an S and you need an S on both actives to get credit for the day if not you get a 0 for the day as if you weren't even there. She bundles your grade, you can have a 90 on exams and not do well on classwork and fail.
Out of all of my classes this semester, this was by far my hardest course and it's only a level 1100. I received so many unsatisfactories on in-class activities for only getting one small part wrong. I managed to meet the A criteria for every part of the grade bundle except exams. Because of this, my grade was a B+. Ridiculous.
While Paxton is very nice, you have to play her game if you want to get a good grade in the class. You have to watch the lectures on your own time and come into class with a good understanding of the content. You should always have her check over the in-class assignments, as she normally won't give you credit for it if it's not perfect.
I don't think Dr. Paxton's class was atrocious and an A is attainable if you work hard, but I wouldn't recommend it. The whole grading system is unnecessarily confusing, based on a pass/fail system, and dependent on passing exams more than anything. Dr. Paxton is super nice but she needs to rethink her "flipped" classroom approach.
Dr. Paxton's PSYC1100 class has a very particular structure that takes some adjustment. The grading can be strict, but if you stay on top of the work and utilize resources like unstuckstudy for study prep, an A is attainable with effort. The lectures are worthwhile, just be ready to do a lot of independent learning.
She was the worst professor I have ever had. Please save yourself the trouble and just don't take her class. Just don't. Her work is too consuming and she literally doesn't teach. Save yourself!!!!
NONONONONONO DONT TAKE WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!! She's an extremely tough grader. You HAVE TO go to every lecture because she gives group assignments every class and if you don't go you receive an automatic unsatisfactory. Also, if you make one little mistake in these groupassignments you receive an unsatisfactory. It's basically all self-taught.
This class was the cause of all of my mental breakdowns this semester, her tests were awful, you have to teach all the material to yourself outside of class with hour long lecture vids and 30 page readings before coming in to do group work every. single. day. Graded on pass fail, you will fail 75% of the work, and if you miss class, automatic fail.
NO NO NO. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS EVER. Absolutely TERRIBLE. She is an extremely tough grader and has the worst grading system ever. Every single assignment is pass or fail. If you forget to put one little thing on an in class assignment. Fail. If you forget to put one citation. Fail. The material shouldn't be difficult, but she MAKES it difficult.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. PLEASE. I read all the ratings and UNFORTUNATELY did not listen. WORST MISTAKE OF MY ENTIRE LIFE. She is the most intense grader ever. You get like 25 minutes to complete the in class assignments and there is so much material you need to include. Forget on little thing? She fails you. Horrible class, save your mental health.
Nice professor but grading system is terrible. Lots of assignments inside and out of class. Assigns up to 50 pages of readings plus lecture videos; for only a three credit course, this was the class i put the most effort into and was my lowest grade. Exams also pull the most arbitrary content from the readings
Dr. Paxton is a very nice person, but I've never had a 1000 level course be so difficult for no reason. Absolutely absurd grading system. If you get one thing wrong on your assignment, it's failing. Very unfair expectations. I would ONLY take this class if its a requirement for your major, do not waste your time on this
Actually the worst course I have ever taken. The professor is just god awful with her grading makes it impossible to do well and purposely wants you to fail. She is also so unorganized and will approve tokens and then take them away and not let you submit a redo. Her class is Pass/ Fail but an 80 and below is fail which IDEK how that is allowed.
although i am ending this class with a good grade, dont get it twisted. my midterm grade was an F because of prof paxton. if you are a freshman or you have to take gen psych cuz its required, im begging you take it with anyone BUT her. she grades assignments as pass/fail, she literally does not teach, and the open book exams are hard. save yourself
Paxton uses FIVE grading bundles which makes it difficult to get an A. She grades harshly and will not grade you higher than the lowest bundle you have, e.g. four A bundles with one B bundle is still a B. She is also generally abrasive and unfriendly, especially over email, and unwilling to help. I got an A but it's too much work for 1000 class.
She is literally the sweetest person but her grading system could be a lot better. I got placed in this class late and she was nice about making up assignments but avoid her if you can for PSYC 1100. She will communicate with you but her grading is very harsh. The homework is a lot as well. Also very heavy on group work (every single class)
Do NOT take this class. There's a lot of group work so if you get put with a bad group you're kinda screwed. Harsh and unreasonable when it comes to grading. Her grading bundles are confusing and you are expected to do an insane amount of work for this class despite how lazy this professor is. Avoid this class at all costs!
I did so baldly. . .
Professor Paxton is a really sweet person and open to communication, but she uses an inverse-classroom model - meaning that you have to learn the material and submit assignments based on that material before attending class. You'll probably learn a lot, but it might not be worth it if you're just taking the class for a Gen Ed.
COGSCI 2201: She's very heavy on group work and rarely shows interest in individual work. She does participation activities that counts for the attendance that UConn cannot technically grade for. We have collaborative practice assignments which are due every other friday. This included Spring Break week! There are no exams but work heavy.
COGSCI 2201: I was scared cause of reviews, but honestly has been a great class. She's nice too from when I've spoken to her. No exams, so you're graded on group assignments, 2 weekly Perusall readings/annotations, & attendance/participation (which is ez, you get a few passes too). Hard to not pass this class lol just do the work & go to class.
I didn't take her psych class I took her cognitive science class. She will not answer you if you email her. I've emailed her multiple times without response. Takes forever to grade and her late policy is crazy. 10 points taken off something worth 10% of our grade bc it was 10 mins late. Groups projects worth most of ur grade, know people!
COGS-2201: I was nervous because of the reviews, but the class was actually pretty easy. The professor is super nice and always willing to help. Just make sure to attend class and do the work. Collaborative Practice: 60% Annotations: 20% Participation (online or on paper): 20%
