He was okay. Very picky about how things were done and isn't very lenient. I spent three quarters with this teacher and felt like my math skills were no good, even though I have done well in everything else. If you ask a a lot of questions, you may get a good answer out of him, but he is very hard to adapt to.
Hey is a very tough teacher but always very fair. If you don't understand something the best thing to do is go to his office hours. The one on one is very helpful. Had him for three quarters and have learned a lot from him.
I have had Alex for 4 quarters. In my opinion he is a really good teacher. His lectures are clear and well thought through. However, he does make sure you understand the subject well before you leave his class. So yes he is a tougher math teacher.... he likes clarity.
Really Helpful... but really wants clarity and intrepetations... a lot of group work
I have nothing but bad things to say about this guy, if you have the option, really consider taking your course with someone else. I ended up failing the quarter & ruining my transcript because of him. Didn't sympathize with me at all. He made me feel extremely uncomfortable. He half teaches. Major disappointment over the summer
super helpful!! His explanation is clear and vivid. Class attendance is not mandatory and could postpone or bring forward the exam date. Just like him!
He is the hardest teacher I have ever had, his test is hard. The average is 50% in his class that means most like half of the class will fail. Usualy I am a A person in my math class but in his class I hardly get the average. I always feel like he enjoy when his exams is hard and the average is low. I will never ever take his class again.
This teacher has the toughest tests ever, his class is hard. It totaly don't recomend anyone taking him.
Tests were exceptionally hard, professor requires wileyplus homework to be done in comp notebook which is turned in. uses hallett book, which is sometimes off course with lectures, very bad book. intimidating personality, I do not recommend this professor.
I had three classes with Dr. Barchechat. He's old school, the way it should be. You really gotta earn that 'A'. That's how college should be. Not this watered down, new-age "everyone's a winner" philosophy where teachers give out A's like candy. That type of grading is what's undermining the whole system. I give Barchechat mad respect.
The first math class I have taken after 3 years of not being exposed to the subject. After taking his class, I knew I was in college. I was able to pass my past math courses with flying colors, but he dove into the subject deeply and covered as much as possible. I loved the class and it has changed my perspective on math. Respect to this man.
Alex is a pretty cool professor. His exams and exam grading were brutal, but fair. The homework is online and expect to spend more than 4 hours per assignment. It's really difficult to earn an A, but Multivariable Calculus is supposed to be hard.
Barchechat, is a awesome professor. Hes extremely clear with his expectations for class and for exam questions. While he can be picky at times he does so, that you truly understand the concept. He teaches mostly through in class worksheets that are extremely helpful. He always willing to give help. He just wants you to have given effort beforehand
Best math professor I've ever had. I was initially intimidated by the subject but he taught it sooo well. I learned so much in his class. Do the work, listen to the lectures, ask questions.
Easiest professor ever!!!!!!! No way you can fail. Dont even try!!!! :) Good Luck!!!!!
Dr. Barchechat is thoroughly knowledgeable in Calculus IV and gave great notes. Reading the text was imperative.
Professor Barchechat demonstrates his thorough command of mathematics topics in each calculus lecture he gave when I had him for calc IV. I enjoyed his classes very much and I found his assessments to be fun and challenging.
Barchechat expects you to know what you are doing and his tests are hard, but he will never test you on something you haven't been taught in class. You get your money's worth with him. His homework assignments can be ridiculously long sometimes, but you only get one per week, so it evens out if you don't wait until the last minute to start them.
What an awesome teacher! His lectures are well worth your time. Doing the homework is required to get a good grade in the class. His lectures only cover the basics and the homework is required to have in depth knowledge. His test are very fair. They test you on basic knowledge but also have hard questions that can be worked through during the test.
Honestly, Multivariable Calculus is a hardcore, no matter whom you take. Alex is always there to help you. In his class, you are expected to spend half of the class taking lecture, half of the time doing practice, if you have questions, then hands up. Please be aware that if you are shy to rise your hands, this is not your class. Test aren't easy
he's so smart that each text would not be easy. but he gave really good lecture and extra help. i like him, he's great !!
Difficult material but he explained it well and had an effective teaching style, lots of hands-on work instead of just lecturing
He has a generous amount of office hours where you can come ask questions about anything and he gives a lot of effort to make sure you actually understand your question before leaving his office. His quizzes and tests are definitely a challenge. He sets the standard high for UWB students, which I like! As long you put in the effort you will do OK.
He got through all of the required material (and more) in a timely manner, and was still able to convey the ideas to students. Very big on theory, which is expected for a matrix algebra class.
Online homework is aweful, completely useless. In class worksheets are quite helpful.
I really liked the set up of the class. For about 30mins, he would lecture, then give us a worksheet to work on. Then pause the worksheet and move on, lecture for another 30 minutes, and let us keep working on the worksheet. The back and forth helped not fall asleep during the 2 hour class, and the practice really helped solidify what you learned.
Math 324 is a pretty brutal class in general. Concepts are hard, but most people should be able to grind through it. He will answer questions you have to try to make things more clear to you. The tests are not like homework problems so to prepare for them really try to understand and conceptualize them.
Brilliant Mathematician.. who is passionate about the field. Happy to have been a part of his class, and would highly recommend him to anyone who is serious about becoming better in math, but would discourage anyone who is looking to do minimums and skate to just cut a grade.... bad format for that mentality.
Took Calc II with him last winter. Barchechat is not only an expert at integration, he was also extremely effective at teaching the subject. His tests are challenging but if you pay attention in lectures and practice the problems you should have no problem getting a good grade. Fantastic and definitely would take him again!
The class was challenging and requires lots of visualization, but Barchechat goes through the material at a steady pace and allows a generous amount of class time to practice problems. The class is pretty much half lecture and half practice time and during the practice Barchechat is extremely helpful. Definitely recommend.
Great professor! The class is relatively easy and with a good amount of practice anyone should get a decent grade.
Alex Barchechat is there to make sure you understand the material. He does so by going through wild examples and giving rigorous tests. But he always grades on a good curve. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT whine about not understanding material in any class he teaches if you won't raise your hand when you first feel lost. Ask him. He'll help. He's great!
His grading is fair and he is clear about what we need to learn. Great professor overall.
The worst professor in the world. Doesn't care if you learn or if you understood. Cares way too much about yoga and less about students! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Awful period(.). Do NOT take him.
Awful. Avoid at all cost. No homework feedback, answers. Simply marks off grades if didn't get the answer correct, even though the process is correct.
NEVER TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!
Homeworks were sometimes longer than necessary. He does try to challenge you, however the exams are much easier than the homework. Plus, he lets you have a half sheet(midterms) full sheet(final) of notes to use if the class requests. This saved my exam grades. He often ends class early, but sticks around for questions. He also curves the exams.
His lecture is really clear and he knows what he is talking about. Tests are not easy though he curves. Not easy to get 4.0, but still will get a fair enough grade. Homework are not too much, but not little for sure. Would take him again for sure!
He moves at a good pace through the material, so class is neither boring nor overwhelming. He gives you in-class problems to work on to enhance learning. Ask him for help if you need it! You will get out of this class what you put into it. Don't expect to pass just by doing hw and sitting in class observing. Do the in class problems, ask for help.
Barchechat rocks! Funny, awesome teaching style, incredibly helpful. Always will answer questions to make sure everyone understands the material. Ask him for helpclarity if you need it. Master solving the problems he gives in class, and you will ace the quizzes and exams. He grades harshly, but curves, so it's more than fair. Chili Pepper.
best math teacher I've ever had. So patient with people who don't understand what's going on in class! tests aren't that bad if you study your notes
Overall, a solid professor. He's tough, but fair. A core part of his class are worksheets which he provides, but he refuses to give any solutions to them. However, you are absolutely free to ask questions and send emails to him to check your work. In other words, while a little inconvenient, definitely fair. I personally enjoyed his dry humor too.
A fine lecturer who gives tough exams.
Great teacher, knows his stuff.
The style of the class is very different. He lectures for about 10-15 minutes then gives you problems to work on by yourself the rest of class and he is there to answer questions and check that you did them correctly. Though different, this was a very effective way to get students to do the learning in the classroom rather than outside of it.
Mad whiteboard skillz
He is a very great professor. He wouldn't hesitate to answer mathematical questions. He really cares about the understanding of the concepts and will guide you through step by step without missing any details. He provides an example each chapter/section during Lecture which helps when doing homework. I recommend barchechat for any math course
His way teaching does not really fit my study style. He just writes everything on the board and let you take notes. I do not think he gives students enough time to think about the examples. Also, he makes hard quizzes and tests. And those quizzes can decide whether you fall or not. However, it is almost impossible to get really high grade unless you are the top 3 students. The average grade is about 65 percent for my class.
I'm taking calculus 3 in uwb with this professor and it's actually my first quarter ever in uwb. He cares a lot about every students and the way he explains things is inspiring me to pull off better approach to problems that he goes over in the class. I feel like I can deal with any problems I see from the homework without facing any difficulty.
Great teacher, very clear, understands the subject (matrix algebra) is confusing, and tries to make it so everyone understands.
Awful teacher, and I do not say that about teachers almost ever. He gives packets every day with a few examples and rushed through them on the white board. he actually laughs when something is hard for us and is VERY condescending, making sarcastic and rude comments. He doesn't input any grades because "we are math students and we should do it". NO
Matrix Algebra is a very abstract concept and it is fairly difficult to understand some topics. He teaches the topic pretty well and is very accessible during office hours. his feedback on tests is informative and helpful.
Very hard teacher and for no reason, plus makes you memorize all the formulas unlike the other calculus teachers.
Although this teacher is caring, his teaching style sucks, is a VERY tough grader, and hw does not reflect the tests at all. He hastily gives 1 or 2 examples of a concept on the board and gives a a bunch of exercises. He expects us to just understand. No one feels like calling him over for help at every single step. I learned more from self study.
Had him for UW in the High School calculus last year. Tests could be easier and assignments/worksheets more thorough, but class overall is fine. He's really nice too.
Barchechat is a pretty good calc professor, but sometimes his lectures are a bit confusing or incomplete. That being said he is extremely helpful while doing in class work and doesn't make you feel like an idiot for not understanding something. Currently taking him for STMATH125 and would take him again for 126 if he taught it this winter.
Professor Barchechat might seem intimidating at first, but he's actually really helpful. His tests are kind of difficult, but during his lectures, he explains concepts really well, so if you pay attention then, read the chapter before class or even after the lecture, and use the homeworks as practice, the class is fairly easy.
I did not like his teaching style at all! I love math but he made this class extremely difficult for me. He only shows one example and expects you to do the rest on your own, his homework does not reflect on the tests. does not give you enough to help prepare you for the tests. I had to do a lot of self study and even went to class everyday :(
Dont take his class.
Very poor examples and explanations; poor use of class time in a course where good time management makes a major difference. Additionally, DO NOT READ THE MANDATORY TEXTBOOK: YOU WILL FAIL. I REPEAT, YOU WILL FAIL IF YOU STUDY FROM THE TEXTBOOK. None of his tests cover many (if any) concepts discussed in the book or homework. Take notes!
I don't know if its because this is the first time he has ever done an online class due to the pandemic, his teaching style sucks!!! He makes everything super complicated then it needs to be and his lectures has nothing to do with his exams. I did not go to any of his lectures through Zoom and definitely waste of my $4k tuition.
I had him for spring quarter 2020, during the Covid pandemic. He is much less helpful and understanding than the other professors. He is VERY stubborn, and doesn't seem to really even read the emails you send expressing concerns, let alone care about them. He has been accommodating at times, however, but the bad far outweighs the good imo.
If you have the option, pick the other teacher that teaches Math 144. I took him during the pandemic and it was awful. He prerecorded all his lectures and tried to fly through them so he could be done working as soon as possible. The homework assignments are super easy compared to his tests/quizzes. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON HIM BEING YOUR TEACHER!
Wont give clear info on work
Professor Barchechat is perfectly well at online teaching style. His quizzes, tests, and HW are both in MyMathLab. Especially on tests, he gives you two times (Highest grade submitted). If you work hard on his class, practice outside of his class, and review his PowerPoint notes (not from textbooks), you'll be definitely fine.
Lowest Quizzes and Lowest Online Homework dropped! He is the best instructor Ive ever had!
This instructor is really amazing. I took his multivariable calculus class during this summer. He gives you two chances to take both Midterm and Final (First chance is a practice exam).
This is really an easy and a relaxed class.
When I first saw his ratings, I was honestly intimidated but I am very glad that I took him for math 124. He makes sure you understand. He promotes a very cooperative environment in class. This class is not easy but if you meet him for office hours, ask him questions, listen in class, and give your best efforts, you will do fine.
Tests are very hard, and they are very conceptual. The class average for the tests are around a 73% after an almost 10% curve. The lectures are kinda boring and could be pretty confusing. I studied a lot by myself watching the lectures in mymath lab, which could be a great resource for people.
No required participation. But plz, plz, make it to the class, at least once a week. He'll give you a 1-1 help on problem (if and only if you have tried it out, or explain what you're stuck on). Friendly. His tests are heavy. Lots of questions. BUT show your work, he's generous on giving extra credits. Beware of meditation stuff.
Really cool prof, super easy to understand and explains concepts well. Gives really helpful practice exams which help prepare fully for all exams. Gives a bit of extra credit but not to much, but always willing to talk about how to improve in the class. Probably my favorite calc prof so far.
Ok yeah the meditation stuff it’s a little weird but I ended up liking it. Super nice prof, explains concepts really well. If you can do the practice you will ace the midterms. Talk to him if you have concerns, always willing to help at end of quarter, and always wants to understand where students are coming from.
His lectures are incomplete. He doesn't fully explain concepts because he wants you to discover it on your own. Extremely harsh grader. You get zero points for having the right answer with an explanation that isn't detailed enough. Almost every quiz needed revision because it is filled with errors and covers things not covered in lecture
Responsive in and out of class, very willing to help students out. Accepts and responds to feedback. Make sure to take notes on the video lectures. You'll need a lot of scratch paper... and to practice solving problems often on your own time.
no review sheet and any sort of review we did have he refused to give an answer sheet for us to compare answers. made class proof heavy when its a class also for engineering students who have no need for these proofs. gave us new material the week of the test rather than review material/ let us ask questions on those topics which would be covered.
Attendance is mandatory, you can only miss 2 days before getting a 0 for the whole quarter. You also lose an attendance mark if your notes aren't perfect. His lectures are pre-recorded videos you have to watch at home. Actual in person classes is glorified study hall. Which could be useful if he actually answered questions without being cryptic.
Terrible professor. He literally does not teach, and will provide no guidance and act arrogant on top of it. He doesn't provide any solutions and will expect students to be able to answer his questions without any margin of error. His tests are terrible and unnecessarily difficult. Do yourself a favor and avoid this guy at all costs. He is terrible
I'm confused as to why they have a 4.0 rating. Attendance mandatory cause he checks if you took notes. No lecture in class- prerecorded videos. Doesn't finish examples in videos. Doesn't believe in giving students answers so you never know if you're right. Never directly answers your question. Class just means working on problems without answers.
Awful Professor! Very strict grading on already very conceptual exams. Attendance is necessary as he has notebook checks, meaning he requires written/typed notes when you arrive. Class can be considered office hours since all of his lessons are on pre-recorded and spends most in-class time having students work on problems. Never gives clear answers
Professor Barchechat goes above and beyond for his students. The people complaining below are only doing so because they don't want to put the effort in to succeed.Whenever I had a question about hw or thought I deserved a higher score on an exam or a quiz he would take my argument seriously. He is receptive to emails and is a caring professor.
Doesn't lecture in person. Instead, he uses pre-recorded online videos which you have to watch on your own time. Tons of short quizzes and he checks your notes on these videos at the start of every class. Very generous with partial credit and he knows what he's doing as far as math goes. He believes in letting the student discover things themself.
If I could rate this professor a 0 I would. A lot of the notes were inconsistent to what was stated in the textbook, there's way too many quizzes that felt fairly irrelevant to what was on tests, the tests were extremely difficult (which is why our class test average was around a 60%, while the other classes were around 85%), among other things.
We met once a week, where we would go over a few problems from the homework and do a set of problems. He prerecords lectures which you are expected to watch, does not lecture much in person. Homework is easy as it is all online with multiple attempts, easy to use chegg or something else, answers are all on there. Beware of midterms, they are tough.
Avoid this prof if you can. Exams weighted 50-60% of your grade. Attendance is mandatory - he rolls a lottery to check your notebooks every class. Class time is essentially glorified study hall, so be prepared to do much of the learning on your own. He is very stubborn and does not offer any leniency beyond the few dropped quizzes and HWs.
Professor Barchechat is great, everyone says attendance is mandatory but its not, he checks your notes every other lecture but you can show anytime. If you email a question he will always answer extremely quickly. His video lectures are meh but if you ask any questions in class or email hell make sure to explain until you understand completely
Hybrid classes where you need to watch and take notes on the (~2h+) videos for the week. The in-class session has worksheets with written problems that you have to go up to the board to solve. He doesn't give answers to any of the worksheet problems which is very frustrating since exam questions are similar to them compared to the Pearson HW.
Online lectures are confusing and hard to understand. He does not teach during lecture. He hands out worksheets with no answers so you have no idea if you are doing it correctly or not. Worksheets and exams are similar. Pearson HW is no help and a giant waste of time. Better to watch youtube videos to learn the material.
Professor was difficult. Its not an easy A so if you know you earned it. I would say getting a 2.0 is like getting a 3.0 in other classes. More conceptual than computational. On exams the integrals and derivatives aren't super complex but you will be asked to apply what you learned. Fair but strict. Lowkey gives shout outs to those who try hard :D
Two midterms with one being only a week and a half before the final! Class only met once per week and we were expected to watch 2+ hours of videos and take detailed notes (notebook is part of your grade) in preparation for class. Worksheets in person were way more challenging than anything on Pearson and he does not give an answer key to them.
Goofy ahh professor. Canvas quizzes are unnecassarily stressful. doesn't give out worksheets in class.
He's pretty good at teaching the material, however, he'll have a bunch of random assignments on a third-party discussion page, which are super easy to lose track of if you're busy with anything else. If you make one forgetful mistake and miss the vocab assignment, you're cooked and just lost 10% of your grade without anything you can do about it.
The professor doesn't do lectures in class, rather, he relies WAY too heavily on giving you lecture videos (1-2 hours long) before class. Use of class time is questionable; he doesn't give you answers to any questions he provides in class, so you won't know if you solved a problem correctly or not. UW Bothell just seems to have bad calc 2 profs.
All his lectures are videos from 3 years ago he expects you to watch and basically master before class. Doesn't actually teach in class and throws really though problems with no solutions. Too many random assignments to keep track of. You can pick your grading contract and exams are open note but extremely difficult, all exam averages were in 60%s
Not a bad dude, but his way of teaching is inefficient. Offloads lessons as long lecture videos for homework, and then uses class time to do like 1 or 2 examples from the lesson. Assigns a bunch of small discussion assignments that are easy to forget about but do affect your grade. Will blame students for poor grades instead of his teaching methods
Zero teaching actually done in class, he prerecorded all the lessons years ago and you have to watch them before class. Genius system really, don't have to do any work of teaching in class this way and he just goes over a problem or two. Convoluted grading system that's inefficient. Talks to students demeaningly and claims its just how he speaks.
Be ready to spend time working on pre-lecture videos before classes.
Pros: pick your grade weight, open note exams Cons: exams are so difficult that it doesn't even matter (class averages were 50% to 60%). Class time is just doing two examples, you spent hours at home watching panopto videos from 2022. And there's tons of discussion posts you have to do or end up getting a zero.
Online lectures that, I just found this out, were recorded three years ago, so there is the possibility that the content itself is outdated. There are assignments that seem tiny, but will drop your grade massively if forgotten. Difficulty of exams do not match that of homework/quizzes. Worksheets are your friend.
His online lecture videos were well done; they conveyed the material effectively and showed exam-relevant examples. The course has a flipped classroom structure, so come into class expecting to do problems and assume that you'll need to know at least the general ideas from the assigned lecture video. All exams are open note and allow a calculator.
Professor Barchechat is a very thoughtful professor who genuinely cares about his students. He doesn't just try to teach the topic at hand, he also encourages students to practice critical thinking, self motiv
Took him this summer and honestly he is a great professor. He lets you choose your own grade distribution with at least 17.5% being the midterm and 17.5% being the final which isn't bad. Have to put in the effort in order to do well in this class and his exams are similar to his lectures and in-class worksheets and grades very nicely.
Tests are harder than what has been discussed in class and lecture. He believes that test are not to see what a student has learned but expose them to alternative learning techniques with harder questions. You will spend a lot of time on assignments and teaching yourself the material. No lecture inclass unless it's about philosophy or on whiteboard
I would hope I get into a car crash on the way to class , easy content but Alexandre Barchechat makes it miserable and calls you out a lot for unnecessary things.
Just stay away if you can. I studied and went to every class. He says test are low stakes but yet his test are 10x harder than what he lectures and they are 50% of your grade. Vocab, notebook, and discussions with feedback and responses are all or nothing. Study the worksheets he gives in class.
RUN. no half points or extra credit, he structures his exams so they can "teach you something new" rather than test you on something youve learned in the class. which is almost nothing. you get videos that make no sense then in class you discuss the lectures, and he will tell you youre not trying hard enough if you arent doing well in the class.
