Very good teacher. In order to pass his class, you need to keep up with the readings, unless you know Microeconomics. He does not give any homework which is good and bad. Your final grade is just the three exams put together. The first two are worth 30 points and the final is worth 40. If you want to pass just read and go to class.
His lectures are very important; however, almost a show up and pass cause he's that clear. No homework, no attendance, no quizzes. Only 3 exams two are 30 questions final is 40. NO exam is cumulative. Seriously, just take him he's the best Micro professor at Rutgers.
show up to class and pass, read the book and pass, your choice. lectures are very textbook-based and he is clear. exams are fair and reasonable.
Great and funny guy! Lectures were enjoyable even though they were at night. He bases his material on the textbook. Important to note: you have only THREE grades: exams 1 and 2, and then the final. Sometimes I wish there was graded HW to boost me up a little, but overall: read the textbook, do the optional HW, go to lecture, and you should be good!
really nice professor
Hohmann knows his stuff pretty well. But there are only 3 exams; first two are 30 points and the last one is 40. None of them are cumulative, which is great, but keep in mind that you have to do well on all of these exams as there are no homework or other grades to help you. The textbook is online--just keep using different emails for the trial.
You can definitely do well by reading the book, doing the online homework, and reading the extra reading in lieu of going to lecture. If you want to ensure a good grade, go to lecture somewhat often. He'll often ask questions on exams that begin with the words "As we discussed in class..." They're usually pretty easy to reason out, though.
Professor advises from day one that not to take notes and just listen to learn the material and understand fully. I tried that and regret it so take very good notes. No computers or tablets allowed which I didn't like. Do online sampling in advance because it locks out before exam so no time to review and help you study. No example problems review
There are 3 tests, 30, 30 and the final is 40 points. All multiple choice. It's not cumulative except for the final which has 10 questions from the first two units but its pretty basic stuff. Missed a bunch of lectures and got a B+. Great guy, and this class got me more interested in the subject. Going to class isn't necessary to pass, but it helps
At first, I did not think I would like Hohmann or Micro, but in the end it was one of the best classes I have taken at Rutgers so far! He is an amazing professor, so PAY ATTENTION in class and you will learn. His gives three exams, and if you do the optional homework the exams will seem fair! Loved Hohmann!
One of the good Econ professor at Rutgers. Knows what he's talking about and will clarify with any questions you have. Some questions on tests are not in the book and only mentioned in class so if you go to class it's an easy A but you can pass without it. Easy homework about once a week.
Really great professor althoug the lectures or more of a summary/clarification of the material so reading the book is highly suggested. 3 exams not cumalitve final great guy, would take again
Great Professor. Can make lectures really interesting. No accent so he is very crystal clear. He gives out homework worth 10% of your and three exams wroth 30% each. The textbook which was Microeconomics by Krugman 4th edition is essential to pass. He makes the class very interesting. Test are 40 questions multiple choice and they are very fair.
Textbook is essential to pass. His classes are basically reviews of the chapter, but he goes over what's most important (since the chapters are so long). He talks very fast and doesn't send out PPTs, so it's hard to take notes. Kids stopped going to class because of that, so he purposely put stuff on final he only taught in class.
It all depends on how much effort you're willing to put in. Some people naturally understand this concept of micro and therefore have nothing to study for. But if you're like me, seek the extra help, read on your own, try anything. It's pretty hard in my opinion. But he's decent at explaining stuff, especially one on one so take the initiative.
Hohmann is super clear in his lectures. He really breaks down the material to make it easy to understand and welcomes questions. Super helpful and wants you to do good. Also, he's hilarious so it keeps class interesting. His tests aren't cumulative and very fair. If you study the material, there shouldn't be any surprises.
Three exams, each 30% of your total grade, and 10% from your homework. attendance is not mandatory but helps with exams. he doesn't allow taking notes using laptop but that's the way i find most helpful (because it's fast and convenient to review and read). most exam questions are from your homework and quizlet so study those.
Very good professor. Lectures are clear and in logical order. Definitely read the material before class to get the most out of it. If you go to class, do the readings, and do your part of the job as a student, an A is definitely manageable.
50 multiple choice questions on first exam and midterm.. I wouldn't recommend him, his exams are very hard.. I've heard Okada was very good.. Okay actually provides study guides but this professor doesnt provide anything.. He doesnt post powerpoints online ANYMORE , in order for you to get the information you would have to go to class.
He WILL call you out and stop lecture if he sees you on your phone. Read the book before class bc powerpoints are directly from it, no point writing it all. Also go to class bc some exam questions are talked about in lecture. Not for those who can't study concepts, because he doesn't do math here (no calculators).
He always asks everyone if they're keeping up, but talks like a auctioneer. You can ask him questions but he dances around the answer so not really helpful. His exams are the worst. He asks such specific questions, it's as if he thinks this is the only class you take. So many extra articles to read. Find someone else's Intl Econ class to take.
He may be a good 101 teacher, but an awful 300 level teacher. worst econ class ever
A teacher with too may rules; tough grader without curve at all, really bad
Make sure you do the HW, because some of exam questions are from HW. And you should do a lot of extra testbank if you want to get an A.
Prof. Hohmann is a good professor. His lectures, presented with a powerpoint, are very clear and the information comes straight out of the textbook so you can always refer back to it if you are confused. Homework is easy if you read the textbook. Exam questions come from the homework so if you do well on the homework, you'll do well on the exams.
Absolutely horrible professor. Heard this was one of the easier econ classes but he has managed to make it extremely difficult. Must attend lecture as slides aren't posted online. Gives no guide or information about what will be on exams. Only says use chapters and notes from class, which dont match up with the textbook. DO NOT TAKE
I heard this was an easy economics class . Professor Hohmann is a great lecturer and seems passionate about the material however, he makes the class harder than it has to be. I would advise not to take him, class average was a 64 for the first exam. He questioned our intelligence which I thought was quite unprofessional of him.
He was probably one of my favorite professors. He rewards students for going to class. I remember there were questions on the exams that he only discussed in class. He always responded well to student questions and concerns. A genuinely good guy, and smart too. His lectures explained topics well, and you could review them later online.
one of the worst professors i have had at rutgers, it is only my first semester but man he is not good at teaching. you knows the subject material very well, but will put you down if you dont understand something and will not try to make it any clearer. he actually prides himself on giving riduclously hard exams. do not take him!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. I WISH I CAN GIVE HIM A 0 BUT THEY WOULDNT LET ME. DO NOT I MEAN DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD. THIS IS SUPPOSE TO BE AN EASY CLASS BUT HE MAKES IT SO HARD. SO PRIDEFUL AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS GRADES. TAKES HIS JOB WAY TO SERIOUSLY. THIS CLASS IS HARDER THAN MY INTERMEDIATE MACRO CLASS
worst professor dont take him.
I personally love international trade but even I found this course difficult. He doesn't post the slides and a lot of the material isn't in the book. Intermediate macro isn't a prereq, but it really should be, because he expects you to pick up on the concepts quickly. He also does not curve. But this is a very interesting topic in my opinion.
Easiest and best micro professor for sure. You don't need to read to pass, as long as you do the homeworks and watch micro videos on YouTube, you'll get a pretty good grade in this class. No need to go to class, but going to class is def a plus because he sometimes shows exam questions in advance in class.
Pretty funny guy and he makes the topic more interesting. Impressive, since you can't really find humor in business-related courses. Takes slides right from the textbook, but explains stuff really well. Don't pretend to know everything in Intro to MicroEcon because he will roast you
Class is on the harder side, but he's a good teacher. Needs to lose the sass and attitude. Seriously.
I had Hohmann for 2 classes and I'll say he gives a cocky vibe. You may or may not like him, usually split feelings among the class, BUT Hohmann is fair. You get the grade you deserve in the class. Read the textbook (before class) and THEN go to class, and you should get an A. I wouldn't recommend skipping unless you took econ in high school.
Great, funny teacher who really knows his stuff. He doesn't curve, but tbh his exams aren't hard enough to require a curve. As long as you either read the book or go to lecture and pay attention, you should be fine. One thing i should mention is that while attendance wasn't mandatory, there are two topics he quizzes you on that aren't in the book.
Took him for Macro and hated the class. He reads directly off of the slides and goes off on a ton of tangents. If you aren't giving him your attention he will call you out for it and will joke to the class about you. If you have him, you are going work on your own and get extra help from TA's and peers. I do not recommend taking him.
Probably one of the worst Professors in the Econ department. International is the lowest elective there is, and he makes it one of the most difficult. Exams are extremely unclear and difficult, and if the average comes out in the 50s or 60s he refuses to curve. Save your time and energy and take a different professor for econ electives.
Ok guys hohmann is an OK professor. I recommend going to lecture because he doesnt post the powerpoints online so all of his notes are given during lecture. He curves a bit but not too crazy and he only does it at the very end with your final letter grade. Most of the time C+ gets bumped to Bs etc.. but for As it has to be a raw A(no curve for As)
awful
His jokes are like an exponential decay function, where each punchline he tags on gets increasingly less funny as more words are spoken. Besides that, Hohmann is a very fair teacher, the exams weren't anything crazy, and his power points are informative. Just read the textbook and do the homework and you'll net yourself a B with little effort.
Professor Hohmann is not necessarily a bad professor, but its more of the content of the course that was widely uninteresting. Honestly, the course spends way too much time on economic theory and has almost no practical use. Multiple choice exams are difficult (3 exams 84% of your grade), which is a rather stupid process. HW a measly 16%.
If you take Hohmann's class and actually go to lectures, you need to make sure to read the textbook beforehand. He lectures the basics and then gives real-world examples for each concept. In all honesty, you don't really need to go to class. The exams are based off of the textbook and online homework assignments.
Went to every lecture, read all of the textbook chapters, did all the homework, yet still did poorly on my exams even when I thought I did really well. Prof Hohmann is honestly really interesting to listen to, yet he does not provide examples so you never know how the questions will be on the exam. Definitely do really well on the homeworks!
He managed to make a lower level elective more difficult than it needed to be. He is unwilling to work with his students and doesn't seem to care if they know the material or not. Exams consist of very unclear questions and he wont help you if you have a question while taking it. I seriously would not recommend taking him.
Hohmann's a decent professor. He explains concepts clearly in lecture, and he'll answer any questions you have during lecture. Two midterms, one final, all worth the same amount. There's weekly/biweekly online homework which is easy and if you do the practice modules that come with the textbook, the exams are very similar.
Professor Hohmann is a great professor. His lectures are very helpful and he will help you with your questions until you fully understand. He made me actually look forward to lecture with his entertaining personality. Exams are not easy but definitely passable especially with the curve at the end.
Easy class if you already took econ before. Hoemann made the class more interesting with his witty jokes. There is a lot of reading involved in the class, as the lectures do not go in a ton of depth, but overall the tests are mostly based on in class examples, and homework problems.
Don't waste your time by going to class. If you devote 1 hr and 20 min a week to reading the textbook (which is a very easy read) instead of going to class I guarantee you'll get an A. All the exams are very fair and the questions come from the basic concepts of the textbook. In class he goes over a ton of real world examples, which are not on exam
He's big on lecturing; doesn't upload slides online, so you can't look at them later on (so go to lecture). Many test questions are very similar to the homework. Memorizing exact definitions of terms will help you better understand the material. He is willing to help, but email him before you go to office hours to confirm. Also, no laptops allowed.
The class seems like very easy because you do not need to attend then only 10 mcq for homework. Get ready to see 60/68 on your exams. Because he does not prepare you for the exam, basically you self teach yourself. He does NOT upload any ppt or anything online and you can NOT even take any pic of slides in lecture. Don't take him, take other prof.
Provides students the resources to excel in both Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. His class is what you make of it, if you attend his office hours, lectures, and do the necessary homework, you will do well in his classes. His passion of the subjects were what led me to pursuing an Economics major.
Hohmann is dude who would like to put a lot of lecture in explaining stuff and he is surely good at it. However, he made stuff unnecessarily hard. If you like challenge, be my guest, but think really well about what do you want, better grade or better lecture
Would not recommend unless you actually go to class and pay attention which is hard to do bc macro is very boring. Exams are harder than they should be and often covers topics he only mentioned in class and were not covered in the textbook. Not extremely difficult but not too great either.
He's easy to talk to and gives great advice during office hours. Unless you want to go to office hours and want him to know you as a person and not a student, I would not waste my time going to lecture. Just read the textbook and review the questions and flashcards on LaunchPad. I got more from the textbook than I ever did during lecture.
He's a great professor and is helpful during office hours. He uses real-world examples to help students understand the material and makes funny jokes in class. Micro isn't an easy class but he does his best to help you understand it. I definitely recommend him for intro to micro
DONT TAKE HIM! He is extremely dry, does not post slides, and is not afraid to embarrass you in front of the class with his sass. He is not a terrible teacher, but he's rather dry. He will make the tests extremely hard and will make sure he screws you over. I read beforehand, sat in one of the front rows yet I couldn't manage an A.
I was new to the Economics world, and he did nothing but scare me away. The class is comprised of 3 exams, all weighted the same, but its impossible to get a good grade. I read the entire textbook and didn't do well, but did better than a lot of people. He has a weird curve because he knows people won't do well. I got my first C ever because of him
If you actually put in effort you can definitely get an A in this class. Everyone who complained about him in my class always skipped and didn't put in the effort until it was too late. Pay attention to lectures and GO TO CLASS- the examples in his powerpoints show up on the exams!! He explains concepts clearly so if you don't do well, it's on you.
Attendance is not mandatory, most of the material you can teach yourself, but if you get confused, go to lecture. The class is challenging, but when I do show up to class, he always presents it in a way where I can understand. Read ahead every chapter and take your own notes before going to lecture. He's a friendly guy, accomplished in his field.
Hohmann is awesome! So engaging and his lectures are actually helpful. He not only asks questions to the class to keep us on our toes, but also answers any and all questions we ask. Not that hard, but you do need to go to class and preferably, read the textbook. I would definitely take him again, just cause he is such a good lecturer.
Hohmann is a clear, interesting lecturer. Although attendance is not mandatory, I would recommend attending if you can. The exams are on the harder side (compared to other econ professors) and to do well you need to read the textbook, understand the homework, and go to class.
Engaging lectures packed with humor and relatability. Knowledge exceeds far beyond simply Economics. Makes this difficult subject much easier. Aside from his outstanding lectures, Professor Hohmann taught me the art of critical thinking. Professor Hohmann will quite possibly go down as my all-time favorite instructor in my higher education. A++++++
His lectures are pretty helpful. He explains very nicely. His exams were really difficult tho. If you wanna learn something, i would definitely take him. But if you are not a good test taker, I would suggest take a different professor.
He definitely knows his stuff and he is a good teacher. You can tell that he tries to material interesting and incorporates a bunch of examples and anecdotes in his lectures. There are 3 exams and none of them are cumulative, which is good. As long as you do the readings and go to lecture, you'll have a good chance of doing well in this class.
Great professor. Hes very involved in class, answers questions and really prevents the class from getting dull. Only annoyances are that he doesnt post slides online, so go to class, and no technology at all allowed, but I guess thats for the best. Theres 3 exams with the same weight (noncumulative) but if you read the book the exams are fine.
If you hate economics, then don't take this class if its for a core requirement, I regret doing so. This class requires a lot of dedication and interest. Professor is good and interested, does not play games. HAS A STRICT NO DEVICES POLICY, not even laptops to take notes, unless you have an actual reason.
One of my favorite professors teaching at the University. Attendance and keeping up with the reading material is essential to your success. He gives the most interesting and relevant lectures of any professor I have ever had. If you do the readings, show up and pay attention in class, do online practice questions, this class should be very easy.
IF you are interested in Microeconomics, than yea he will teach you. Me though, It was so boring for a core requirement. It is a difficult class, that requires a lot of dedication. There is homework for almost every chapter. The tests require a lot of studying. Good thing is, he gives a lot of resources to study which is what bailed me out.
Do not take his class if you do not want to fail. His lecture is the worst. He never provides online materials for students to review. Even before the final exam. SKIP HIS CLASS PLZ!!!
Overall he's a good professor. He's definitely very knowledgeable and willing to help. It's true that he doesn't allow technology in class so you have to rely on taking good notes. Go to office hours if you can! I had a decent time in his class.
Best economics professor. Gives you important slides to print before class and take notes on (and you will definitely want these when you are studying). He uses real-world examples in his lessons and presents the info in a great way. Review notes, do his practice/homework problems, and use the online resources. Straight forward tests too. Enjoy
Please don't get me wrong, I think Professor Hohmann is a good person. However, he is definitely not the Microeconomics professor you want to take if you care about your GPA. The reason being that he doesn't curve any test grade. And if you ever ask any questions about a test or homework he will not answer them and tell you to read the syllabus.
Microeconomics with Professor Hohmann is not easy, but he does care about his students, as long as you participate and go to his office hours. Make sure to read the textbook before class!!! His lectures are also great, he connects topics to real current affairs, something a lot of other professors don't do. Put in the work and you'll do well.
He is an amazing professor compared to any other business school professors. He is incredibly knowledgeable and invites questions from students, answering all he can get to. Strict no phones. Very very helpful to read chapter before lecture so you can participate. I highly recommend reading chapter then using all sapling tools to study for tests.
There's lots of HW but it's good practice. Some of the HW and quiz questions are on his exams. He wants students to participate so make sure you read the textbook before coming to class. I never liked microecon (business itself), but he made me become more interested and knowledgable in the topic. He's a great professor and loves what he teaches!
He is a really good professor with really interesting lectures. His class may be a little challenging, but I think that he prepares you adequately (He can be a little mean).
For god's sake who in their right mind makes homework due at 6 pm as opposed to 12 am? I've been taking classes remotely and I've already missed multiple assignments due to this bs submission time. Not only that, but you can only start the assignment AFTER a certain time, which means if you want to complete homework early, guess what, you can't.
Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll gain a lot from going. He makes Microeconomics funny, entertaining, interesting, and relatable.
So tbh I have not gone to a single class except the first two classes from the beginning of the semester. This class can honestly be self-taught and going to class is not mandatory. The only issue is the homework that he assigns. He makes them due at 6 pm and you only have a 24 hour window to complete and submit hw assignments.
His class is extremely tough. Don't take him if you don't like economics. No digital technology allowed is understandable, but his exam is too hard. You cannot ask any question in the exam if the question worded oddly. You can take him if you really enjoy economics. When I took his class, he completely destroy my interest of economics.
Professor Hohmann is great- his micro lectures were really interesting and he makes class funny and engaging which is low key rare. That being said, for online class we had quizzes and HW due each week at 6pm which is a lot to keep track of. If you want to do well make sure to use all your sapling resources, go to class and read the textbook.
Honestly, he's really accommodating due to COVID-19. he uploads these explanations/lectures for each chapter and he goes through it thoroughly and then in class he goes through problems and introduces ideas/concepts and the pace that this course is taught is also really good. really good prof 10/10
A professor who does not care about his students and does not teach well in a virtual surroundings. His lectures are boring, long and hard to keep up with and he does not give any favors of you missed anything or not even a study guide for exams. Only benefit is there are no midterms. Only weekly quizzes and final. Still would not recommend. Macro
Had him fully virtual. Class consisted of weekly quizzes and homework, and one final exam. the quizzes were hard at times and consisted of stuff that were never brought up in lecture, but thats where reading the textbook would have helped. it would have been nice if we had more than 24 hrs to complete the hw and they weren't due at 6 pm.
Really great and funny guy. The lectures can be a little lengthy. He spends too much time on the optional readings but reviews hw really well. Its too easy to fall behind in this class so make sure to keep up. My advice for this class would be to read the textbook and review on your own to get an A. He will not spoon feed you the material.
Prof did not accommodate to well to COVID and online learning. The class functioned as if nothing changed. The deadlines for hw were in the middle of the day(5pm), and if you missed it due to any reason he would not let you make it up. The quizzes were okay, can find answers on quizlet. And not willing to round up anything. Bad prof overall imo.
Very accessible for office hours, willing to have conversations about macro topics. During pandemic, fully asynchronous, very organized.
Don't take this class!! He is making the exam as hard as possible to show off his knowledge. He is not a responsible professor at all. He does not care about students' grades. If you are planning to transfer to Business school, don't take him. He will make your life hard. He is not a bad person, but the way he treats his students is horrible.
You can definitely learn a lot in this class. But he is too stubborn and not willing to hear his students' opinions. I don't like his personality to be honest. He does not care about his students at all. One time, I ask him about study request. He said, people ask this deserve bad grades. Wow! What a great person who does'n't care his student grade
Honestly one of the best professors I have had at Rutgers. He is tough, do not misunderstand, and he takes no ones sh*t, but he clearly knows what he's talking about and his lectures are full of witty commentary and relevant information
Knowledgeable with all of the topics he teaches. Be sure to read the textbook while taking notes as quiz questions partially come from the passages in the book.
Hohmann is a very wise and caring Professor. He has weekly homework and quiz assignments to complete, with the goal of student retention, both are easy to accomplish. The quiz is just recycled questions from mylab study plan. He is very accessible, funny, and gives great advice, especially if you are interested in economics and/or finance.
He's ok. Weird bc on the homework if you get caught with help on it he'll give you a zero for cheating. Ive never heard of that for homework before, only tests and quizzes so its weird. Otherwise, his assignments and quizzes and exam are straightforward, just tedious. Hes average, not bad but not the best.
I took Macro asynch with this prof and it was pretty easy. There was weekly homework (easy) and quizzes (difficult) and a final cumulative exam (easier than the quiz questions). The homework opened at 11:59PM on Monday and the quizzes at 11:59PM on Thursday which was a bit unusual. If youre short of a grade cutoff, you wont get the higher grade.
Do not take him if you have any other options! His lecture is boring and useless, he barely test us on the ppt that we used in class(although he says the test will be based mainly on his lecture). He doesn't make things clear to students. His quizzes are not easy as well. Really tough class because of him.
If you have another option don't take his in-person lectures. I studied heavily for each exam and quiz but the difficulty of his class is incomparable. Compared to the Ascyh classes our class was told we collectively have one of the worst averages... ? His lectures leave little room for participation if you didn't memorize the entire textbook.
He is a mediocre teacher that teaches a boring class. The tests and quizes have some questions that are pointlessly difficult. ' 10% of grade is quiz and 90% are exams He is also a hardass, don't expect any leniency on late/missing work
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. he is a nice enough guy, with an okay sense of humor, but he makes the class so unnecessarily hard for no reason. if you haven't read the textbook and memorized every word of his lecture, GOOD LUCK trying to pass his exams. he basically called me stupid and made fun of me when i tried to go to office hours for extra help
he is super knowledgable in economics, but he tries too hard to make everything as complicated as possible, and is not receptive to his students. he got mad at us for performing poorly on his exams, instead of thinking as to WHY every single one of his students were failing the exam. dont take this class if you value your GPA lol.
He makes his exams extremely hard, overcomplicated most concepts, and if you don't attend lecture and memorize all of his PowerPoint slides it will hurt your performance on quizzes and exams. Very frustrating and unhelpful professor.
Professor Hohmann is undoubtedly a knowledgeable economics professor, but this has to have been the worst class Ive taken during my time here at Rutgers. He is very passive aggressive, and no matter how you study his exams are extremely difficult to pass. Would 100% avoid him if youre taking any economics classes.
Explains all concepts very well, classes are generally fun to attend
This class felt impossible to study for. I missed only a few lectures, but there was so many concepts that I missed that I had to reteach to myself. He seems very knowledgeable about Macroecon, but he was very stuck up and made people feel bad for needing help.
Decent prof. He did make the course harder than it should have been. There are three exams (2 midterms each worth 25% of your grade, and 1 final exam which is worth 40% of your grade). The class average for all the exams were absolutely horrible. At the end, he did generously change the grading cutoffs by a lot, so not impossible to pass.
Professor Hohmann taught this class very well. The concepts were explained well and I learned a lot. You need to read and show up to do well in this class(attendance not mandatory). He was accessible by email and office hours. He only allows handwritten notes, so be prepared to come with a pen & paper or iPad. His slides are intuitive; I recommend.
This is my second time taking Professor Hohmann. He is very knowledgeable and teaches very thoroughly. He goes into depth for all of his topics and his quizzes are straightforward. While attendance isn't mandatory, I'd recommend going to his lectures, he answers questions and is available outside of class to help. Read the textbook though!
Really shitty professor. Did not record lectures upon request. Did not release his slides with notes as well, which forced attendance. Quizzes and Tests were extremely difficult. Questions were asked outside of the textbook. The class average for Exam 2 and the final was in the 50s. Do not take him if u care about ur gpa. Shitty Prof & boring lecs.
The professor is passionate but it is overwhelming and you HAVE to attend class to know what is happening. Exams are extremely hard - too MANY detailed topics- even after I reviewed practice Qs, went to every class, and read the whole txbk. Class averages are in the 60-70s and he does not believe the exams are hard because 1-2 person would get 100.
Just no. Run away and choose someone else. He will make your life so miserable that you will reconsider going to business school. You will have to study hard to save your GPA.
Try and stay away if you can take another professor. He doesn't post a lot of resources online, so you have to attend lecture to get the notes. Exams were very difficult. A lot of the material was not covered in the lecture, so read the textbook. Low exam averages so he curved the final grades. He's a good guy, not the best professor.
A bit of a tense classroom experience because he's quite strict and blunt, but an great professor teaching wise. His lectures are helpful and very well connected to the textbook readings. As long as you attend and pay attention, you should be successful in this course. Quizzes and tests are straightforward but still difficult.
Content in lectures is not accurate to the textbook. Quiz and exam questions are unnecessarily difficult. Grading makes no sense. He will make you question being a finance major.
very less questions on the exams, my class's average grade is always the around 60
Hohmann is an old-school teacher who believes that grades are not given by teachers, but earned by students. As such, he has an old style: he doesn't allow phones or computers in class (though he does allow tablets) and does not allow retests (but will drop the lowest of 11 quiz grades). Still, he was clear, effective, and great with answering Q's.
Attends to questions and queries during the lecture, connects lecture material with current events and related disciplines.
Would highly recommend
Very arrogant. Made lectures irrelevant to actual studied topics. Quizzes reflected political topics rather than actual basics of macroeconomics. Has no respect for people in general, and even said, "Do not come to me about personal situations if you miss a test" saying even if you are hospitalized you don't get a make up.
Terrible. He only grades quizzes and exams. Quizzes are taken weekly with a poorly prepared slideshow, which does not correlate with actual exam/quiz content. Take any other professor besides him if you feel like you would end up missing a few classes.
If you want to make macroeconomics easy. Do not take him.
Prof Hohmann wasn't a bad prof. His lectures are useful, but micro is also something you can find great resources for online. He has weekly weekend quizzes which get annoying if you have smth planned for the weekend and three big tests. Be careful on the exams, they're worth a lot of your grade and only have a few questions. Not too bad of a prof.
You could get in a car crash before class and he would still show no sympathy. Exams are impossible regardless of how much you study or go to class. Hardly helps or has any motive to curve an exam no matter if the class average is below a 50. If you want to pass micro do not take this guy. Full of himself and will have no hesitation to fail you.
Good professor in the sense that he knows a lot about the subject, however he can be very harsh and petty. He expressed one lecture that none of us matter in life and "the sun will rise tomorrow even if we're not here." Just a little harsh to hear at 8:30 on a Monday morning. Don't get caught using technology in class. Avoid taking him if you can.
Very passionate but not the most caring professor. Good at answering questions but made rude comments in his lectures which rubbed students the wrong way. If you want to pass, you MUST read the textbook. You leave lecture thinking you know the material but are then tested on completely different topics. Testing environment is often hectic and tense
Prof is very knowledgeable about what he is teaching and uses current events to make it easier to understand. Tests are very difficult, even if you read the textbook and attend all lectures. He also does not curve. His canvas is very organized so you have a clear schedule of when everything is happening which is nice.
Incredible professor but you need to spend time learning the subject. Blueprint is given to you day 1 and it's up to you to commit to it. Practice weekly tests, study for exams, read the textbook and you'll do well. Lectures aren't mandatory but you should attend, he is a fantastic lecturer and can answer any question. 10/10 prof for a hard class.
Take Professor Hohmann. The recipe for this course is simple: take the practice quizzes, read the textbook, and study. He makes this clear from day one. He takes his instruction seriously and you should too. His lectures are extraordinary, insightful, and intuitive. He is simply brilliant and such a joy to have as a professor. Get ready to learn!
While he's a great professor to listen to, but his exams are difficult and hard. He makes his criteria and rules clear from ur first lecture and it's up to you how u wanna do. Pay attention, take notes, and keep studying is all you can do to pass the class with good grades. He's a bit rude, but a good lecturer. Only 3 exams and weekly quizzes.
The class is entirely exams and weekly quizzes. Hohmann really cares about the material, but he tends to make it sound more complicated than it is. Exams are pretty hard and you 100% have to read the textbook. He doesn't take attendance, but he refuses to post the slides and gets really angry if anyone takes pictures.
Do not take this professor at all costs. A very difficult class, too much content the textbook takes hours to read per chapter and its mandatory for this class. There are other macro professors at Rutgers that have a lower passing grade and are way easier, and stuff like reviews before the final which he does not provide. Please don't take him.
Prof Hohmann loves to teach and makes his classes engaging and interesting but his exams are extremely tough. The entire grade is determined only through exams and quizzes; attendance isn't mandatory. Reading the textbook and attending lectures is the only way to score well in this class, so choose him only if you're ready for that.
This class has 11 quizzes, 1 gets dropped for the lowest grade. 3 exams overall. The final exam I found it to be the easiest of the other 2. Lecture isnt mandatory but he does give the notes during class and its not uploaded on Canvas as you only get a partial version of it. Although a lower level elective, its a tough class. Be prepared.
He posts weekly quizzes and tons of practice on Canvas that are the exact types of problems that are on the exams (some of them are even the same), so def make sure to use those to study. His lectures are good & you need to go to class to fill out the lecture outline slides but don't stress if you miss a couple. The textbook is helpful for review
I took Hohmann for macro and Prusa for micro during the same semester. Hohmann was good but Prusa was fabulous. Hohmann was lecture heavy and test heavy.
He talks so much in the lecture and has very little notes on the slides, tough exams that are not based on what he was teaching! Take another prof!
do not take him for micro take elgawaly if possible. The exams are barely like what he teaches in class and are so much harder than his quizzes as well.
Doesn't give lecture notes, must go to class to fill them in. Exams are difficult, and teacher is very rude. Take any other professor, they are way easier. DO NOT TAKE if you want to be able to skip classes/not have to cram. there are much easier professors
Professor was horrible. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!! do NOT take him for micro. class is test heavy, reading heavy, and lecture heavy. If there's another professor available, take them instead of him.
Hohmann's macro class is lecture-heavy and test-focused. The textbook is mandatory but useful for study prep along with resources like Unstuck study. Attendance is required, so make sure to engage to get the most out of it.
Great professor! Hohmann's Canvas is organized, and is very knowledgeable and passionate. His lectures are very structured and detailed. He holds students accountable for disruptions, so stay focused and ask questions! Quizzes can be tricky, but the exams are fair. Keep up with the readings, attend class, and review regularly, and you'll do fine.
The second midterm average was a 66 and he DOES NOT CURVE. The class is test heavy which isn't an issue but his tests are hard and not much like the textbook practice that he recommends,
its hard, you really have to put in work and study, MAKE SURE YOU PAY ATTENTION TO LECTURES, no point in going if you don't
Do not take
Prof. Hohmann gets a bad rap because he is strict - my honest opinion is that he's a solid teacher. His office hrs are great, and if you do the exercises on Achieve, at least skim the book, and show up to lecture, you will do well and get an A. On the inside, he loves his students and has lots of wisdom - attend his office hours to see what I mean.
As long as you do the practice questions and read the textbook, the exams become very easy. But you do have to put in the work so if you don't understand something go to his office hours! He also base his exams on the practice questions so it's very important to do it every week. I'm usually a weak test taker but this class was manageable for me.
This class hinges on the quizzes. They're every weekend, so if you have a conference/competition, you're cooked. Honestly, just read the textbook and truly understand the concepts, use the internet to help you on the quizzes and review the quizzes for the tests. You'll do fine. Don't bother with office hours and only write what's not on the slides.
Attending lectures made concepts easier to understand, and the professor provided interesting real-world examples. The only grades are the weekly quizzes and three exams, which are all multiple choice, and doing some practice problems and attending class really helps.
Not the greatest lecturer. You ccan self-teach but stuff he goes over in class ends up on exams. Quizzes are easy, exams this sem were not bad, but you gotta put in the work to learn the material. Curved the grades at end of sem for whole class a bit. He calls out students so don't pull your phone out, he's also a bit of an ass. Rely on textbook
Grades based only on quizzes and tests, and while the lectures are really interesting and he's a really cool guy, they don't really help for the exams. You need to self study the textbook a lot to do well on the tests and also pay attention in lectures. He's a really great lecturer I just wish the lectures covered the textbook material better.
Good lecturer brought down by poor grading. Literally 100% of your grade is based on multiple-choice questions totally ripped - if not *slightly* modified - from the textbook. That's both a good and a bad thing: you can cheat on quizzes, but the questions are often vague or poorly-worded to the point that you will be docked points on occasion.
Do not take him , his exams are very difficult. The average grade was a C+. You will be better off with other sections
Very blunt and straightup, borderline comes off as rude, but cares about his students learning the concepts. Makes his exams harder than they need to be, if you can, take the other prof. doesn't want you on a computer during class and wants you to read the textbook chapters before the lecture. Exams were difficult, in person and memorization based
read or at least skim through the chapter before class. doing the hw problems on achieve are not required but do them before taking the weekly quizzes to help. go to the lectures, his lecture notes make concepts easy to understand.
He's one of the best Econ professors at Rutgers, and I wish he taught higher-level courses instead of just intro/elective courses. Even though some material is tough, he explains it really well. His classes have weekly quizzes (lowest quiz score dropped), two midterms, and a final. Exams aren't too bad, but most of the class ends up with a C/C+.
If you read the textbook and study hard you'll do well in the class. Professor Hohmann emphasizes this at the start and during the semester many times, and his lectures are very well organized and interactive which help you understand the concepts. I preferred him to professor elgawly who I'm taking intro to macro with this semester.
Hohmann is a solid professor. His lectures are very conceptual and are impossible to follow if you don't have a very strong foundational econ background or read the textbook religiously. His exams are not too bad, since they are based primarily on the weekly quizzes. It is hard to do well if you don't lock in (like me).
cannot teach a lecture to save his life. will throw a fit if you take pictures of slides in class bc its a "violation of his privacy". goes off on random tangents and whispers to himself. will call u out if on ur phone as if we are in high school. doesn't post notes done in class. you have to teach urself through textbook. avoid at all costs.
Honestly, he wants to help you do well. And he is hilarious during class. That being said, be prepared to do LOTS of work outside of the class; atypical for a 102. On the exams, class averages around around 65. If you really commit to the class, doing practice problems, really reading the textbook, you'll be fine.
Class isn't difficult but professor can be annoying. Exams aren't bad they are all multiple choice, most of the info is straight from the textbook so if you study it's not hard to do well. He curves final grades a lot. But he calls out people in class for being loud or taking pics of the slides. He also ends class 5 min late every week.
Microeconomics is a pretty bland topic, a lot of technical work that if you don't like, you don't like. The professor has some policies he's pretty strict about, but otherwise, if you show up to lectures, try to understand the material and ask questions when you have them, you'll do fine.
I had him for International Econ. Pretty good professor. Lecture isn't mandatory but it was useful for me to get a general idea of the topics despite being pretty boring. The grade is comprised of exams and quizzes only. Exam questions come mostly from quizzes and practicequizzes. It's all multiple choice though so it's definitely manageable.
Not as bad as people say, sure he yaps in lecture but just skip them and read the textbook, his exams aren't that bad so you can pretty much just self study and do well in the class.
even though hes a great guy and his lectures are informative and engaging, i just think they are not enough preparation for the tests. even with doing the practice and reading the textbook there is a lot of confusion on exams because they are so conceptual rather than what the practice offers which is calculation based. hes not a bad professor tho
Prof. Hohmann is a good professor, but you need to do some learning on your own. Lecture helps, but you must use Achieve practice to help study. He has a left-wing political bias. He cracks jokes and is pretty funny sometimes. Class is purely based off tests and quizzes with no extra credit and no homework at all. You must do well on the tests!
Hohmann knows what he's talking about & loves connecting topics to events throughout history. But his lectures are add ons which I don't really like. you HAVE to read the textbook and do the online problems to understand and pass, listening to him is 100% not enough. Find extra time to teach yourself or just skip the lectures tbh.
He's okay but cheat on the quiz's theyre 20% of your grade along with the tests and final
One of the most passive aggressive professors I have ever had. Attendance isn't mandatory, and his slides aren't the most helpful in the world in relation to the test. His quizzes are all online take at home quizzes. Overall, the course is mostly self learning from the textbook, etc.
Very easy exams that are based off of the weekly practice quizzes assigned to us each weekend. Make sure you attend lectures, take notes on the outlines he provides on Canvas, and do the quizzes each week and you'll do well on the exams.
Hohmann used a lot of examples from current events to make things more interesting since most of us aren't econ majors. Exams were fair. Very helpful during office hours.
He's a nice guy, but I would never take this class again. He makes it so much harder than it needs to be. If you want to do well in this class you have to basically teach yourself everything from the text book. His lectures are just a bunch of yap and don't cover enough of the material. You actually have to learn most of it yourself.
Lectures included lots of references to what's going on with tariffs, trade, and international relations. The theory can be dry but the math was easy and he kept things relevant to the news. Go to class and you don't need to read the textbook too much.
