Best teacher -- dedicated, intelligent, clear and helpful.
He not only reads off the textbook (so about 20% of students come for lecture) but he does extremely, painfully slowly. He is very longwinded, repeats the last part of previous lecture at start of every class. He also rephrases questions in a longwinded way, and intones it slowly, as if the class was expected not to be listening, and moreover, not
It really doesn't matter what the teacher is like for PHIL 120- read the textbook and do the practice questions, its as easy as that. Lecture is fairly useless as he just goes over the text very slowly and with millions of examples, not exactly necessary!
extremely easy, just do the practise questions and you'll ace the exams. The notes in lecture are really helpful so I didn't even have to read the text book
His midterms are a joke! VERY easy. Class is a waste of time. don't bother going. do the examples in the text book and i guarantee at least a B+ on the midterms.Final was brutal. not like the midterms. alot tougher. easy going teacher!!
Best prof ever! I love him. So helpful - he'll spend hours talking with you and explaining stuff if you need it. He's really intelligent and has a hilarious and dry subtle sense of humour. He's super fair and it's clear what he expects. Also, he photo copied our readings for $10 each rather than making us buy a $100 text book. He's great.
TERRIBLE. I don;t know if he's good in other classes, but in this class he was DISORGANIZED, FORGETFUL, constantly making MISTAKES, and could NOT COMMUNICATE in English. Nice guy, good intentions. Terrible professor.
He's an EASY proffessor!! i would say he's second in the list in choosing a prof for this course!! first would be leslie burkholder (cause he doesn't even give you a fina exam!). As for teaching.. he's not so great but he's really helpful outside of class. Very nice prof too!
Alexandre is a great teacher. He is very interested in what he is teaching, although his teaching style takes a bit of time to get used to and to understand. He will spend hours with you, however he may tend to go off topic when doing so. Make sure to take good notes. I would advise regular attendance as some concepts are complex.
He's a great prof, really willing to help if you ask. I find him a bit hard to understand in class, and his humour is very dry... I think he has something against George Bush and fish or something... Overall a great Prof! Midterms are misleading though... ALSO very marker depedent (some markers give part marks, some dont.. GRR). Finals were hard.
He tries really hard to make his class an enjoyable time, and one can appreciate him for that. He is extremely helpful outside of class, as he will meet with you whenever you want. The book was only useful for its practice problems. I enjoyed his dry humour in class. Overall, a very nice guy, and a rather easy class.
Easy prof. Sooo boring though. His pace through out the course was extremely slow. Tests were easy and final was easy. Attendance is not required to get a good grade, just do the textbook exercises.
Very nice, trying very hard but usually not clear. He sticks to the textbook materials and as long as you do the suggested problems you'll do fine on quizzes and exams. Classes are sinfully boring though... But he makes up by being a very helpful, kind professor. Recommended if you take summer courses.
Now this is an exemplary Prof! Top notch teaching style. Unforgettable. I wish I could take more classes with this scholar. Sharp mind and good humour (which always helps.)
This prof is really easy going! his tests are really similar to the text and are rather easy. As long as you read the text and do the exercises, you don't really have to attend class. He also is really helpful but he isn't always clear in his explanations, better off reading the text.
Great Prof. Explains the readings very well, if you attend class and take notes you will do well. Really knowledgeable about the material. Also a fairly easy marker.
If you manage to pay attention to his monotone voice, you will find he is a very good lecturer and explains things very slowly and clearly. His tests are very fair and he is a nice marker. Also he has a good sense of humour :) and he says "Okay, good." 100 times per lecture.
Korolev is a rather boring professor with a completely monotone voice. The course is somewhat dry. However, I did find the material to be interesting. Lectures are boring and not mandatory, but the textbook is great. Tests aren't that difficult. Class average was 78% and I got 86%. Class requires diligence and hard work.
The course content is more abstract than PHIL220, but as long as you have had some exposure to intermediate-level math, PHIL320 won't be as hard as advertised. The prof is quite patient and takes the time to explain the concepts clearly. Probably easier than Bartha's section.
The content of this class is pretty dull, but I think he did a good job at explaining and teaching everything. We had 4 quizzes and a final exam, but one of the quizzes was taken out because everyone did so horribly. Class is easy if you study enough for it.
Had a thick accent, kind of hard to get sometimes. Very helpful and nice guy, easy to approach. Had 4 quizzes, but he would drop the worst one and make the other 3 worth 20% each. If you understand the text book, don't bother going to lecture.
Korolev was a good and understanding professor. His notes were easy to follow and he showed a general interest in the course. The text was also really clear, and I recommend his class if you want to learn about logic.
Easy teacher if you like Philosophy, hard if you don't. The stuff he assigns for your discussions are easy but the quizzes are brutally hard compared to the discussions.
Very easy course. Never went to class. I just went over slides and discussion questions and ended up with 90%.
Korolev is a professor who has a lot of passion in philosophy. He tries his best and goes out his way to help the students. Class is a bit dull though, and its not mandatory because he post all his lecture slides online. As long as you put a little effort its easy to get a high grade. He gives 4 midterms, 1 final. My grade: 77%. - Luckymango
The distance education course was a complete and utter joke. I waited until an hour before each quiz was due to look at the material an no quiz took me more then 20 minutes. Easiest A of my life.
He is one of the best profs I had so fat. He is always willing to help and is available at his office hours. I will take another class with him if I can. He genuinely wants his students to do well.
Fantastic professor! He genuinely cares about his students, taking the time to explain things thoroughly. 10/10 would recommend.
His online notes had everything we needed. Didn't need to use the textbook once.
Some say he's a bit monotoned, but hes actually really funny and good at explaining if you listen. He also replies promptly to emails. The funny thing is, he has a russian accent, so now whenever I do tests/assignemtns, I think in a russian accent as well.
I felt as if there wasnt much help provided but there's only so much you can expect from an online course. Overall the course material/content was extremely easy and evaluations were relatively easy and fair. Study hard for the final - it's not overly difficult and tests on knowledge and basic understanding instead of application (phew).
All do it yourself. Make sure to not to fall behind. There is a quiz and "group discussion" where you have to solve a bunch of questions every week. Not too bad, most answers can be found online. Final is based on the questions on the group discussion so practice those a lot. He gives you hints near the final day so really study those.
The textbook is complex with a lot of expected inferences made throughout. Not enough examples, unclear explanations. Lecture notes are copy and pasted directly from textbook. No additional material provided. Prof explained that to be fair to all students, there wouldn't be support or help. Get ready to hire a tutor.
When I asked for help, he suggested I drop the course. The textbook and lecture notes are identical, so save your money. Not worth the money, not an easy A as others proclaim, unless you cheat. He doesn't encourage group discussions. It feels a lot like the blind lead the blind because there isn't support.
There was no assistance or responses to questions when I desired help in his online introduction to critical thinking course. This is NOT a beginner course and this professor is not interested in his student's success, nor is he invested in communicating the course material in an understandable way.
I took this class based on the comments here, expecting to boost my GPA with an easy course. Not the case. Hardest thing I've ever taken. Prof is helpful and replies when you don't criticize the course or material. He is really passionate about philosophy, but doesn't know how to teach at an intro level. Waste of money. Maybe in person is better?
Very polarizing course. Either an easy A or one of the hardest courses you'll ever take. Textbook was convoluted and doesn't help that his online lecture notes are just copy and pasted from the textbook. Would have appreciated more examples and elaboration of the material. Quite easy to be overwhelmed given how little guidance there is.
He repeats and does LOTS of examples and demonstrations for you. his tests could be quite difficult, but they are everything you should know. HOWEVER, personally I think symbolic logic is very useless. you learn lots of symbols and how to change them into different equations. It had NOTHING to do with what I thought philosophy is. But he is nice )
Not an easy course. The material is not appropriate for it being called an introduction to... Might be a great teacher in person, but online, don't expect to "see" him around.
I honestly enjoyed this course and professor. I found it fairly straight forward as long as you put effort into the discussion activities. I dont think there were really any surprises, then again it just might be because I am a science major I understand the material better. Do not take if you are not tech savy or can't learn independently.
Note: I haven't taken the final yet but just finished the course. Basically expect no interaction from him what so ever and read the class notes which are ripped straight from the textbook. The quizzes were fairly easy and required minimal studying.
He is pretty funny. All you need is the slides so you don't really have to show up to class. He explains things pretty well. The quizzes are actually a lot tougher than the assignments he gives so make sure you know the things well.
Please do NOT take PHIL 120 Online. It was one of the most boring and useless classes I have ever taken. Take something more difficult that you are interested in instead! The prof does not help at all.
Although this course begins easy I found that, as time went on, the material became very confusing (specifically logical proofs). Some homework assignments took 10+ pages. The grade is determined by homework (10%), quizzes (40%), and final exam (50%). Dr. Korolev, in office hours, was very confusing. Final exam was worded SO awkwardly.
Dr. Korolev is a very nice guy. Hes super respectful and kind. PHIL 125 can get a little bored, but is a good class to boost your GPA. Just follow the syllabus and you will get a decent mark : )
Start reading from the start of class. Lots of homework and very difficult course in general.
He never announces due dates except in class, doesn't prepare a real syllabus, clears his throat every two sentences, and assigns boring essays from the textbook directly. Although he tried to make jokes and such during lecture, I'm sad to say it didn't help with not knowing when the midterm was going to be. Avoid.
Lectures were really dry, he just straight up went through the textbook page by page. Thoroughly unengaging. When I found out he teaches another course I signed up for, I switched sections.
Lectures are very boring. He actually can explain things pretty well, however his style is slow, soft, and uninteresting, so it's difficult to pay attention. Textbook reading helps but is not necessary.
His lectures are flawless. He never makes mistakes and very skilled at explaining the subject matter clearly. You will never think you're terrible at math after taking this course with him
While not the most engaging professor ever, Korolev is quite good at explaining the concepts and slips in witty jokes every now and again. The course material is not overly challenging and the testing is very fair (ie not expected to memorize very much and quite concept oriented but easily accessible).
Not engaging, Material (for Phil 120) dull. I found him bad at explaining the concepts used in the class. I will ensure to avoid this professor.
He had very little presence in the online course; he never responded to any messages on the canvas board. There was little to no teaching involved and the whole course relied on the modules that were given. You pretty much taught yourself the whole course.
He is pretty monotone which sometimes make the lectures a bit of a chore to get through, but he actually explains the concepts really well and is very thorough with his teaching.
Dont take his online course, he does absolutely nothing to guide you. He has modules posted on the canvas which are essentially a copy paste from the summary section of the textbook. Legitimately doesnt not care one bit about your success in this course.
Good lectures, and very funny. Nice guy who definitely knows his content. Caring and gives fast email responses
No homeworks other than 5 discussion activities (4% each) and 4 tests (10% each). The lack of homework makes it VERY easy to slack off. Lectures got boring as there were a lot of examples (sometimes a good thing, but just annoying for me). Eventually I relied completely on the textbook.
This guy would be a great math teacher. He's so good at doing examples. Even though he struggled a bit with his accent, he made everything clear. You need to work hard to get a good grade.
He makes WEIRD NOISES (moaning/grunting) constantly throughout the lectures and it not only makes me rather uncomfortable it is also extremely hard to focus especially as he also has a noticeable accent and speaks sort of choppy and slow. Also uses Proctorio even though there were multiple lawsuits and most prof find it an invasion of privacy.
Ok I think there might be a language barrier since he seems to have quite some difficulty explaining rather simple concepts and even his written descriptions of assignment expectations is confusing at best. Very difficult to understand what he is trying to say which is a major problem in a course about logic.
Love his lectures with detailed materials
If you're looking for a professor to make you cry of anger on a weekly basis then this is it. Lectures are painfully slow. All questions are answered at the end. Instructions are sometimes unclear and/or conflicting. Prof is unreceptive to student feedback and insisted on proctorio until it was banned. No piazza or TAs for shy students to use.
Not a good lecturer and was often confusing. I felt like I taught myself the course and had to seek help from elsewhere. This course is not set up well online.
Absolute garbage of a sessional instructor. Cannot explain simple concepts, poor communication - no online announcements or piazza ever, does not respond to student emails.
I went to nearly every class and still didn't have a clue what was going on 90% of the time. The random moans did not help. This is a simple math/comp sci-esqe class but the instruction would make you think this is a screening test to work for NASA. Don't go in thinking this is an easy grade booster - if that's the case pick another course
Dr. Korolev is an excellent professor. His lectures are dry, but this is expected given the course consists mainly of proving logical formulas. He goes over proofs in great detail, which helps you understand the rules governing logical proofs. He was also accessible outside of class via email. I strong recommend taking his section for Phil 220.
Lectures are very boring but more useful than you would expect especially when you get to proofs. Pay attention in lectures, do some textbook questions, try during the discussion activities and it's very easy to get a good mark (if and only if you do these things). Put in this minimal amount of effort and you will succeed.
Lectures were dry, and the prof has a minor speech impediment. Despite this he was quite kind and understanding outside of class. Rubric was very fair, and a easy good grade if you put above the minimum. While not perfect he is quite good, and I would recommend him.
Professor Korolev is nice and his lectures are pretty clear, but he tends to dump several 1.5 lectures (the most was 7) at once which can be overwhelming. Reddit said it's an easy A, but even though the content is not too hard, it's a course where you need to put in a lot of effort. The only thing is that he does not respond to emails effectively.
I could not believe some of the hateful comments. This guy has a PhD in Quantum Physics but you're right - he's the dumb one and the sole reason why you don't get the material in your 100 level courses. Listen to the recommendations of others here: if you don't get something ask questions and seek help; do all of the assigned work. You'll be fine.
The topic should be interesting, but he makes it so boring. Attendance is mandatory, to make it even worse.
He is clear and his lectures are very helpful, but oftentimes the content that you are tested on is rather far removed from what he teaches which may make it difficult to succeed. Only issue I had was actually paying attention in lectures. Sometimes if I couldn't fall asleep at night I'd play one of his lectures and I'd be snoring in 5 minutes.
Do practice questions and you will get A
Korolev is pretty chill. He doesn't mark too harshly. Will generally help you out if you ask him. The discussion activities are easy grades and the tests (which are usually a day after the activity is due) are generally identical to the activities. Course content was pretty interesting too.
Prof. Korolev is a super kind and knowledgeable teacher. He may take some adjusting and may not feel like the right fit for everyone but he is a fascinating guy if you just spend a bit of time chatting with him. I highly suggest approaching any of his classes with patience and carefulness. Learn from my mistakes.
Lectures are dry but the course content is pretty clear via practice questions, so you don't need to attend the lectures really. Prof is nice and he explains things well if you go to him after class or in office hour.
Lectures were slow but useful, doing practice problems gets you way above class average as much of the exam questions are slight changes of the textbook problems.
A great lecturer but he was not accesible through email and he struggled with organization. He understands logic really well and you can see it when he teaches, but if you are a student that asks for clarification from profs outside of class time, it can be difficult. Perhaps he might be a better prof to reach in person
A humorous and friendly professor. He is professional during lectures and can teach really well IF YOU LISTEN. Your grade will be consist of 4 tests (20%), 4 discussions (20%), and a final (40%). While the discussion is giving free scores and a good practice for tests.
Mumbles a lot and it's hard to be able to catch what he says. Teaches slow and it's easy to start dozing off in class. Tests are not hard per say - just be prepared to study. Course is pretty disorganized and practice questions (discussion activities) are not helpful at all because there is no answer key to check your work.
A very concise and funny lecturer. There were 3 tests (originally 4, one was cancelled), exercises we posted on discussions, and a final. If you master the exercises you will be fine on the tests. Partway through the term I got sick and my grades took a dive - I asked him for extra credit opportunities and he was very kind and accommodating.
This guy is awesome. If you make a really good effort to engage with any practice questions he gives you, you will likely do well on the tests. Some people say his accent can make his lectures a bit tricky to understand at times, but I had no such issues. He is a fantastic lecturer
Prof advertised the class as "LSAT prep course", however it was the furthest thing from it. The prof genuinely seems to enjoy when students do poorly and rushes through teaching concepts in class. professor also gives very few assignments to boost your mark and the consensus assignments are useless.
if u take the online section theres no office hours and korolev takes weeks to respond to emails and doesn't help even when you hope. Lectures are extremely boring, wish I didn't take this class as an elective. Maybe if ur a phil major you would enjoy it but anyone else I actually promise you this is not the class to take.
Dude's generally a chill guy. Course had three discussions activities each followed by a midterm which are weighted equally each 30%, discussions were worth 30 too I think but at the end the final is a cumulative test that tests contents all the way from the beginning of the course worth 40%. profs nice and will answer any questions after class.
Really clear to understand. Really funny and really nice guy overall, especially if you attend his office hours. I loved his class and his teaching, and can't wait to take more classes with him. Fantastic person and fantastic lecturer. 11/10.
If u don't need 220, drop. Graded by only 3 discussions, 3 midterms, and final - if u don't perform well, you'll have to srsly work to improve ur grade. Can attend most lectures to stay on track with his timeline, but textbook lays out info way more clearly. TIP: do as many practice questions as possible, READ THE BOOK. Little time for long tests.
Very useless and boring lecture sessions. Gives bad examples and reads off the textbook. Never responds to emails and does not provide any sort of help to any of his students. That being said, rated 2 since the textbook isn't entirely useless. Midterms are also never on the previously scheduled dates, and he reschedules them whenever he pleases.
Made us buy his textbook, which was clearly a scam and inferior to literally every other book out there
This is a professor worth taking if you're into logical systems. A brilliant compliment to CPSC 121 or MATH 220. He is very caring about his students, very honest and clear about the expectations, a great example of a high quality UBC professor. Pay attention, write lots of notes, participate in all discussion and you'll do great.
If you're interested in probability and are interested in statistics, this is a great introductory course. He is very passionate about logic and statistics, he uploads notes, and gives great examples. I can say with confidence that this course and his style of teaching it have helped me understand content in other courses.
Do not take this class for credit, especially online. The professor does not respond to emails or answer any questions. There are a lot of unnecessarily long videos to watch, along with pointless weekly group discussions. The content is boring and feels useless for anyone who isn't a philosophy major.
This was the most disorganized, frustrating, and poorly-taught course that I have taken to date. The TA effectively taught the entire course on a Discord chat. Korolev was unreachable for extended periods of time, even to the TA!. Students frequently frustrated. Numerous quizzes were miskeyed, some exams were unlearned material.
Overall great prof! Clearly cares about his students and wants you to succeed. Very straightforward and made information easy to understand. Will take again!
Very disorganised and boring
