For the course being totally new I was impressed
Alex is an inspiration. He's brilliant.
Really likes cats & fencing, but helps students out a lot...really young too.
Isn't it ironic that the communications prof has the WORST communications skills
Alex is sexy in a quiet, logical, funny way. He's mysterious.

I am in love with Dr. Sevigny. He is pretty cute and quirky.
Dr. Sevigny is extremely helpful and kind to students. He a model prof.
alex is so cool. Yay for the Representational Theory of Mind!!!
Dr. Sevigny is a great prof. He's young, more like one of us. He's cute too.
amazing prof... very engaging public speaker.
Dr. Sevigny is a great lecturer. Alex, your little stories are soooo cute!
Alex is a communications poet! Take his class. The best prof at Mac. Metarep!!
good prof. good explanations
Dr. Sevigny explains things very clearly.

Alex is thorough, smart and understanding. He helps students and gives really freely of his time. He is very encouraging and lively.
Dr. Sevigny is great. He will be my practicum advisor this summer! I'm excited.
Some clarity issues...but you'd expect such from a brilliant mind. Nice enough guy though...I'd second the opinion of him being a model prof. most definately.
Dr. Sevigny really cares about students. If you ask for a letter of reference, he will have it ready for you overnight. Sometimes he will stay very late to explain points that you might have missed, if you go to his office.
yah, he's aight
Alex is amazing. Period. Take his classes. He is erudite, energetic and funny. Really brilliant guy.
He uses the heading right from the textbook! I find him boring and his classes are useless, you might aswell read the text!

He seems like a really nice, approachable Prof. He posts great notes on the web, which makes it really easy if you miss a day.
THE VERY BEST!!!!!

I had him as a replacement for Killingsworth and he was amazing. He made the concepts clear and the lectures enjoyable. He is dedicated and passionate about his work.
The classes are informative, but not necessary to attend as he posts the notes on the web. A really nice prof, and the lectures are easy to understand. My only complaint is that even though the course material was easy, for some reason the exam was hard
Also has a good rep outside academic field; was hired for consulting during election, etc.. Textbook self-explanatory, courseware a bit hard but he explaines text + courseware w/ excellent notes (put online) & good speed in speech.
Alex's one of the best prof at the school. He's also the CMST dean, really helpful and he gives u lots of advices in both academics and the program itself
Great prof. He brings real-world issues into the lectures. He's also a lot of fun to talk to during office hours. He always has time for you.
he was a GREAT prof!
Seems like a nice guy, but the course involves lot of reading. The courseware he wrote is HARD to understand!! Too much writing in this course.
Amazing prof. Gives interesting lectures. Loves to teach, really cares about his students. Hard to find many dedicated profs like him in a University setting these days. Best prof I had when I was in first year. Didn't find the course too easy though.
This guy is amazing. He's friendly and funny and cute! Oh, BTW, he's also brilliant.
Extremely nice person in general, great prof and very helpful. Hires cool TAs and makes classes enjoyable. Some boring topics but overall a good intro class.
I think I'm in love with this man.
Fantastic lecturer, really knows his stuff and communicate so well. Very helpful in and outside of class. Tough course but a great foundation.
i look forward to his class like i look forward to going to the theatre. every lecture is a masterful performance.
sooo sweet....and cute website...
Awesome prof! keep up the good work, the class is great.
very good prof, keep it up, but have to choose his t.a's wisely, since some prefer girls over guys cough cough ammerman
I don't know where all the hard comments are coming from, but anyways this class sucked for the first half. He is a good prof but the material bored me. Second half of the class picked up, but unfortuantely I was through with going by that point. The lectures I did attend he was very good at explain
another great prof @ mac frm CMST
best professor yet.. extremely intelligent and his lectures are actually a lot of fun. he's quite funny and very engaging. always very helpful.
Dr. Sevigny is an excellent lecturer who helps you understand the "why" as well as the "how". He always describes concepts in a way that situates them in the larger cognitive psychological perspective. He is also very thoughtful, gentle and a real ego-booster if you have a personal chat with him.
If Dr Sevigny were a rock star, he would be Bon Jovi. Alex is amazing.. brilliant, smart and really attractive. He looks shy and vulnerable sometimes, though.
I really liked his class. He loves what he does. Cheers :).

Dr. Sevigny is brilliant, engaging and amazing. He truly cares about his students. Amazingly smart too. Lectures are like an event!
dr. sevigny is amazing. i was depressed and down on the world. i went to his office to ask a question about syntax. he answered my question, but in his answer there was this quiet gentleness and emotion. he loves language. i left his office feeling like i was in a dream. amazing that just by telling me about a technicality, he made me see beauty.
he is an amazing prof! he really cares about his students and makes lectures interesting! if you dont get him as a prof, you really missing the fun!!!!

very good teacher
Amazing prof!! Definitely one of the best, if not the best prof that I had during my whole time at University. If you can, try to take his classes, no matter what they are!!
Amazing prof! Is so smart and intelligent...he has inspired me to take more Communication courses. He is funny and adorably cute! He makes the lectures innovative and fun. Everyone I know loves him...good job!
Dr, Sevigny is soooooooooo nice. I love him!!! Keep it up:)
Loved SEvigny--wish him good luck.
Good prof, although he needs to try and avoid going off topic, for example: a little less about cats, politics, and france and a little more on communication. :)
great prof. very informative and fun to listen to. take his classes if you can - you won't be disappointed!

dr. sevigny is very passionate about linguistics. he enjoys lecturing and solving problems with the class. he's also very approachable and encouraging. one of the best linguistics profs i have had yet. particularly knowledgable about speech and language pathology since his research has to do with language and cognition.
There is something very special about Dr. Sevigny. He is a cognitive scientist as well as a communication specialist, so his classes are packed with fascinating information about communication and cognition. He also knows an awful lot about politics. To me, these were amazing things to see. They opened up a completely different way of seeing the me
i was bored in lecture, but the material was always interesting ... he made the class very accessible and so i enjoy
Alex is just amazing. I felt that I was in the presence of greatness. He should be Prime Minister.
Very pleasant person. Nice to talk to. Will take time for you if you go to his office and search him out. Although his intelligence is sometimes a little intimidating, he is very gentle in face to face contact. I went to his office once and we talked for 1.5 hours about cognition, politics, life, etc.
Self-absorbed
He is an amazing professor who makes the course interesting. He has an immense amount of knowledge and knows exactly what he is talking about. He is a nice guy, a nerd at some points but overall he is great.
He's great. So smart and funny. He's cute too... I always find a question to ask him after lecture. :)
He is an incredibly hard marker, is of no help when needed as i emailed him several times and had no response, isn't direct with what he wants out of his papers...rarely bell curves....
how can people like this professor? he's terrible! he talks about his dreams of being a politician, goes over class time, and then gets frustrated when people start to shuffle their belongings to go to their next classes. his lecture speed is way too fast, in my opinion. there's no other professor for cmst, so i guess you're stuck with him. :(
very good teacher, but he says "right" and "you know" after every sentence. tends to get annoying. Also talks very fast. otherwise, his explanations are very clear, the examples he uses are VERY helpful.
What are these people talking about? Dr Sevigny brings a ton of personal experience into the classroom! What do they prefer someone who doesn't enrich course content? His examples are amazing. He found me an internship with the Liberal Party. By the way, he has no political aspirations - he is a communications consultant, not a politician.
very good prof ! very down to earth and helpful
Dr Sevigny is amazing. I am a fourth year Poli Sci student and am wishing that I could now switch into Communications. He gives very high level commentary and is great value during lecture and during office hours. THe first-year students don't know how lucky they are to have a Prof. of this quality who likes teaching them.
Took over for a professor that fell ill about a month into class. Did a very poor job, did not explain assignments well at all, did not lecture, made the class very boring. Rambled on and on about things unrelated to class topic and we did not have one single mark until the last day of class. I think we should all get our money back.
These people are crazy. Dr. Sevigny is the best researcher in the department and we finally got a high level of discussion from his "rambling on". What twits these people are. The class took advantage of the fact that he is a nice guy and tried to get him to dumb down the assignments. I enjoyed his discussions - he's brilliant and makes sense.
Dr. Sevigny is a wicked lecturer. He brings comms to life. I looked forward to lecture every day. He had us mesmirized, even though he often lectured for 2 hours or 3 hours straight. He's easy on the eyes too. His eye sparkle when gets excited.
I agreed he was the best in 1A03, but he is also the worst in 4N03. Nothing was taught, keep rambling on something that aren't fit into the discussion. A Full 2 hours lecture on the discussion of duration of grad. studies & on President George. Eventually, our textbook has never been used, such a waste of money.
This professor is magic. I had him in the summer class. He's so intriguing too... I have a huge crush on him.
I just sat there in class, listened and thought about how much he would be a great husband... smart, cool, successful. Ireally enjoyed this class... super organization and great material.
I understand the positive comments but should not teach a 4th year course. 3 hour seminar, talked 90% of the time about himself and his accomplishments. Had a bunch of assignments, the topics of which he would conveniently teach after they were due. Openly criticized students. Favourtism is apparent. Could have been amazing, instead a huge letdown.
Alex is AMAZING. He brought guest speakers from Industry & Government & knowledge about pol comms, which is his specialty. Of course he talks about his experiences! Just chatting with him is an education. He is also extremely kind - he would stay for an hour after class to chat and encourage. He's single too - he would make a great, cool husband.
Dr. Sévigny is a pretentious, condescending prof. Sure, he brought 'industry experts' in, but when they're his politician buddies, days before election, you question his motives. Forget organization, his website reflected dates of years past and course outlines conflicted with other requirements. The text, never used, but coauthored by Dr. Sévingy.
Who are these negative reviewers? Alex is the best professor at McMaster, bar none. I am in fourth year and have had many. He's a fantastic lecturer, intellectual heavyweight and incredible well connected. These children should realize the kind of person they are lucky to have teach them in first year!
In my 4 years at Mac, I have never been so disappointed with a professor as I have been in Dr. Sevigny. Disorganized, egocentric, unfocused lectures, poorly facilitated discussion and assignments, clear favourites and unprofessional conduct. Avoid his classes at all costs--it'll save you time, money and the frustration of being taught by him.
umm isnt he supposed to be a good communicator? randomly swears in class and talks about random stuff. very boring still.
By far the worst professor I've come across so far at McMaster. Ignores your concerns expressed directly to him. I am simply ashamed that I spent money to be lectured by such a man.
HE is SOOOOOOOOOO TOUGHHHHHHH
I loved taking his class. He does begin speaking french randomly which gets annoying, but overall his class was super easy with the 1pg. assignments that you picked topics for and only 4 blogs. My TA was really great though. I honestly read hardly anything .. but went to all of the lectures and ended up with an A- .. I would take his classes again.
It is cool having a professor who is always being interviewed on TV or in the newspaper. Also, he brought Gerard Kennedy in as a guest speaker - I was so impressed! Gerard and Alex took time to talk for hours afterward lecture and then I got a ride with them to a reception. It was AMAZING!!!
Alex is just amazing. He crackles with energy. When he enters a room, the room lights up. I was so in awe of him during class. He brought guest lecturers from the media biz as well as corporate comms. I actually got a job with one of them because I kept in touch after the guest lecture. I just love Alex - he has a wonderful, soothing voice too.
Worst Prof EVER! Totally over-rated and he is SOOO BOORING and tough. And I would never recommend anyone to take any of his courses.
I am a graduate of the CMST program. If people don't like Alex, it's because they are jealous. He is brilliant, kind and nurturing. He has taken time to keep in touch with me since I graduated and helped me get my first job through one of his friends who runs a communications business in Toronto. Alex is a class act and a great friend.
I had him last year the class was huge but he is an excellent lecturer - he brought in a guest which I found pointless - also the blogging was a little pointless but simple - really enjoyed his class & did well - reading the text isn't too necessary just make sure you attend lectures - doesn't reply to emails quick but always available after class
I don't what people are complaining about - Alex is fascinating. It totally hooked me into CMST + he only used the f-word once to illustrate a point about using "shock value" in communication. It obviously worked, since people seem to remember that he did it. He set my internship up for me this summer - he didn't have to do that for me.
Took 1A03 with this guy as an elective in first year engineering 4 years ago. Easiest course at McMaster (that I know of). Went to 3 lectures, a few tutorials, spent a grand total of 20 minutes skimming the readings, ****ted my report, and got an A. Highly recommended for filler value.
Let me put this as simply as possible - I graduated from Mac three years ago. I recently ran into Alex at convention. He is, quite simply, a beautiful, beautiful man. You do not know what a treasure he is until you leave Mac. One in a million.
I graduated in 2005 and have bumped into Alex in a bunch of professional occasions (luncheons, etc). You have to be killing yourself in the workworld, achieving things painfully to start admiring what Alex has achieved. Everybody who's anybody in Canada knows him-in the biz, in politics, in government, activism. Be his friend-his network is golden.
I was in Ottawa and saw Alex across a room at a Halloween party full of media people and political insiders. I didn't think he'd remember me so I didn't say hello. He was there with a very beautiful girl. I was jealous. He was such a calming presence in class.
Dr. Sevigny is an excellent professor. He explains the methodology very clearly and walks the class through the work in a confident and easy-going manner. I really learned how to do a content analysis in a professional fashion in this class. He also brought two PR professionals who discussed how content analysis fits into their work.
The class is pretty interesting, but it is also greatly impacted by your T.A as well. Mine didn't teach me or the rest of the class anything. So it made the assignments a bit of a challenge. But overall it's a fair course.
I found every lecture very interesting and entertaining. I couldn't help but listen.
Friendly and caring. We talked about McLuhan at the bus stop once. Great lecturer - lots of writing in the course though. Inspired me to major in comms.
The class was so useful. Professor Sevigny was very helpful. He made us reflect theoretically, but also emphasized public relations strategy and tactics. I am using EVERYTHING he taught us in my first job after graduation. Dr Sevigny's got style, too which is cool...
What an amazing man. I learned so much from Dr Sevigny - how to measure and analyze the news. It was only when I left Mac and met a PR agency owner friend for coffee on Yorkville that I realized how active he is as a strategic consultant. Such an unassuming, gentle man but amazingly influential. Everyone who's anyone seems to know him.
Alex is a very clear speaker and makes quantitative content analysis understandable. He's quite friendly too and very fashionable. It's a pleasure to come to class. I look forward to it every week.
I really enjoy the news analysis class. Alex is a mysterious guy - there's more to him than meets the eye. Both he and his subject matter fascinate me. A little intimidatingly smart though. Don't know what I would converse about with him - I would be shy.
Dr. Sévigny was one of the most approachable and helpful professors I've had at McMaster. He was always willing to set aside time to see me and answer any questions I had, and was very enthusiastic during class when teaching.
Dr Sévigny is, quite simply, a true gentleman and superb professor. He is my model, now that I am in graduate school.
A truly decent person and a pleasure to have a professor. I learned more during this course than in any other of my undergrad. My favourite course of all the ones I took at McMaster. Period.
Alex is a overall great guy. He knows his stuff and doesn't try to shove it down your throat. We would stop for coffee breaks (8:30 class) and he would come ask everyone how the weekend was. Classy professor that deserves his good reputation. He is still friends with the majority of this older students, always a positive sign.
Alex is an excellent prof. Really knows political comm/elections. Wish I got to know him better. He's so busy and in-demand that it's hard to catch up to him. He doesn't suffer fools well either so if he seeks you out, that's a compliment - be thankful. His lab manager is a very lucky woman to be able to spend so much time with him. I'm jealous.
Bad communication skills, difficult to reach for help, goes on a useless tangents about self and therefore does not have time left for actual course material. He still test on topics he did not teach and is a hard marker. Low use of communication textbook which he co-authored and made us buy for the sake of royaltees.
Extremely passionate and the most brilliant professor I had in 6 years! Extremely knowledgeable and his market experience differentiate him from other scholars. Fair marker; he probably can't stand stupidity. If you are a serious student and that you take learning seriously, i.e. actually read your textbooks, you'll love him.
Sometimes, you are lucky to run into a professor as talented and passionate Dr Sevigny. He cares a lot about his students' well-being and he focuses on students' development as individuals. He also does his best to promote students in their careers. Be careful though - he will ask you to be honest with yourself. That can be a hard thing to do.
Dr. Sevigny is an inspiring person. He makes you feel safe and secure when you are with him in class. When I talk to him after class, or in his office, I never see the time go by. He's a very good man. It's a shame few of us get to know him well. I'm jealous of his lab manager - she spends so much time with him and he obviously really likes her.
Great speaker, engages class extremely well. Gives several assignments that only take a couple hours to complete and have small weightings which helps ease first year students into university expectations and allows for steady improvement over the semester. Very passionate communicator and wants the best for his students.
Intriguing man. Seems to be a lot to him, but seems to be strangely sad sometimes. Sevigny's lecture style is amazing and he has the best real-world examples. But I am always wondering... who is he? A mystery. Fantastic professor, though - scary smart and cultured.
Quite an amazing professor. This social media class is the most useful one I have taken yet. Dr. Sevigny brings his own experience to the classroom. Also one of the best public speakers I have ever seen. I think he should be Prime Minister. Busy man - catch him in a free moment and he'll talk to you but can be hard to find him outside office hours.
he is by far my favorite professor yet.. I love his teaching style, the way he approached the course material and his interaction with the class... I seriously wish we had more like him, he's such a fascinating and knowledgeable guy and it certainly shows in his lectures... I enjoyed his class so much that I took the 4N03 seminar that he teaches.
Really enjoying Dr. Sévigny's 4N03 seminar. He makes it all seem so effortless - doesn't speak from notes, always knows the answer to your question. I really feel that I have learned a lot about agenda setting, framing and the news industry. His guest speakers are great, too.
Best. Professor. Ever.
Really terrible prof. never really said anything important, all material was pulled from the textbook, and most was common sense. I stopped attending lectures because they were a waste of time since the notes were posted online, and he really had nothing to add that was useful.
Don't know what the last commenter was thinking. Must have attended a different lecture. This was my best course in my whole first year at Mac. Dr. Sevigny is awesome.
Really surprised by his high rating and quite disappointed by the fact that many won't believe my rating because it's shrouded by more positive reviews. Extremely boring speaker. Not captivating in the least bit. Like the other reviewer, i stopped attending classes as i found them useless... don't think I learned anything from this class.
How can you say that Dr. Sevigny says nothing? His experience as a PR pro is extensive and successful. I hung on every word and went to his office - he spent an hour with me talking about politics, PR, my future. Gave me great tips for an internship.
This class is a hit or miss, I think it just depends on whether you intend on majoring in Communications or not. I loved the class and found Professor Sevigny to be interesting, to be fair everything in lecture is pulled straight from the textbook, but he does add in personal anecdotes. Great prof to have if you want to work in the industry.
Many people didn't come to lectures because whatever he covered in lectures was pulled from the book. Although I loved the lectures as he gave specific examples and related the terms and theories so our lives and made them easier to understand and remember.
Alex is an excellent professor. His lecture recording is clear and gets to the point. He is really communicative and understanding. He provided a couple of assignment extensions after students talking to him about their difficulties during COVID.
Prof. Sevigny is one of the best professors I have had. He is very knowledgable within the PR/communications field and will teach you a lot of useful things and skills. His assignments are very clear, attend lectures and you will do well! Highly recommend taking his class.
