Lectures are hard to follow and do not make a whole lot of sense. Tests are difficult and cover every little thing, but hardly cover the major topics.
While it is possible to do fairly well if you study hard enough, his lectures don't really help; he is very unclear and often rambles on. He is not very helpful in office hours either; he appears to not really want to help you.
He's somewhat hard to understand and doesn't exactly make much sense when he tries to explain something. He put me to sleep the few times I went to class. you don't exactly have to go to lecture to learn anything. you can just read the book and do well.
Rambles on in lectures, never really understands your questions completely, gives 1,000 different equations and never really tells you what to do with them. He's not the professor from hell, he's fairly nice, but just difficult to understand.
he went to mit,he talks the talk but doesnt seem to understand he is teaching an intro class. He seems to expect everyone to have taken ap che. Lecture material can appear on the test, but reading the whole chapter word for word is the only way to an A
good intentions but difficult to understand
very boring and non-educational. he did not teach well at all. he has a pretty strong accent and his writing is kinda messy. don't go to lecutures, study from the book and the study guide. strongly unrecommended.
Couldn't understand what he was saying, his notes looked so foreign to me. Fell asleep in his class almost everyday, the days I didn't fall asleep his notes didn't make sense. Study the book, follow the book's examples and there shouldn't be a problem.
don't take this clas.it is horrible.sleep through every lecture.don't understand what he is talking about...helpfuless
This class sucks. He doesn't teach well. He gives you examples in the lecture but fails to give you the answer cuz "you learned this in high school and you should know it already". UNRECOMMENDED IF YOU WANT TO ACTUALLY ENJOY CHEM
Cares about our interest in the subject and the big picture
Lecture is worthless. Midterms are hard and so is trying to understand him. I hate this class and having a bad professor makes it pretty hard. I would never take a class from him again.
His accent makes it difficult to understand, but once u pass that its ok. His lectures are pretty long sometimes boring. Reading the chapters ahead of time would be helpful. Midterms are difficult, but not impossible.
Thick accent and hard to understand what he is trying to say. I am sure he means well but it comes out in a bunch of rambling words. Lectures dont help. He is better than Gilbert but not much better. Take a workshop if you have to take him.
Oh lord this class sucks.
Avoid Stuchebrukhov! You will have the hardest time ever. You can't understand him with his thick accent. He goes off topic. He mumbles. On top of that, he uses overhead slides, which he leaves on for less than 10 seconds. Whatever you do, avoid this guy!
this guy is terrible. mono-tone w/accent. doesnt do good examples during lectures. learned more during discussion than lectures. DO NOT GET HIM. TERRIBLE
not so bad. if u study the practice midterms and understand the oncepts on them u wont do bad on the miterm, guaranteed. just do problems and ur set, not hard at all.
It is obvious that he is here for research because his overall ability to lecture sucks. However, he does seem interested in wanting students to advance so hopefully in the nest few quarters he will learn better methods of teaching!
You MUST read the chapters before you come to class or you are screwed! READ the BOOK.He is very hard to understand but obviously loves chemistry. STUDY lots for the tests. He posts sample tests that help. Go to other TAs' reviews if your TA isn't helpful
the tests are always a lot different than you except from the practice tests and he didn't even put the answer key for the practice final so i was totally screwed there, i hate chem because o fhim.
Lectures are completely pointless! He teaches really fast and expects you to kno weverything before you come to lecture. My recommendation: READ the BOOk and understand it inside and out. He reuses other teacher's tests...so practuce off of those
It's very difficult to understand his accent. Slaps on a whole bunch of overhead slides one after the other and mumbles about them and calls it a day. In the midterms we were presented with some unexpected material.Avoid him at all costs you'll regret it.
he knows his stuff but it's really hard to understand him. midterms weren't too bad
Oooh baby...ok..this teacher sucks. Sucks real bad. But everyone gots to admit. This mofo is one hott guy. His juicy lips..and the way he spits while speaking. I just sit in the front row with my mouth open so i can taste his saliva. I call him Stuchilove
Professor knows what he is talking about but doesn't teach it well. Lecture is basically pointless...you just have to read the text carefully and do a lot of problems. Midterms were difficult but manageable.
i didnt pay much attention when i actually DID go to class but if you learn well from the book his tests are really easy> i got an A by doing the example problems and homework in the book> plus stuchy is a cute old man who will help you out
Stuchy's class is very managable. Lectures can be difficult to understand. However, you don't have to go as often. His midterms were completely fair. If you do a few problems and the practice tests, the tests are almost identical with the new numbers.
As far as Chem professors go his class is pretty fair and from the four lectures that I attended he seemed to explain things well...even if it was with the thickest accent ever. I reccomend him.
He's not so bad instructor. lectures can be boring sometimes. tests are easy, at least it's almost the same as the practice midterms. go to lecture, try to memorize most of the stuffs, and an A is guaranteed!
I found this class to be super hard. I thought his tests were very difficult and felt that he went through the material too fast. I studied ALOT and barely passed. Do not take this class early in the morning.
difficult to understand, does not explain well
I found him helpful and amusing his accent isn't bad at all I can understand everything he says. He wants you to read the book do that and you will do well. Oh and his practice midterms are exactly like the real ones
his lectures are a waste of time,,, don't take this class at 7:30AM,, you'll sleep,, He starts out good, but when he comes to the physics stuff he'll be the worst (may be cause i hate physics) his midterm practice is somewhat similar to the tests.. doesn't collect HW..
i thought he was cool. easy midterms. let's see about the final now. russian accent awesome. fun demos. all around good time.
Stuchebrukhov is a cute lil russian man...he means well and wants his students to succeed. However, I don't think waking up at 7:30 am for his lectures were worth it. He didn't explain very well. Made things complicated...I didn't do well in this class at all
When he tells you that his midterms will only be on what is taught in class please do not believe him. Going to class is pointless just read the book do the practice midterms and may be just maybe you will pass. FYI midterms not curved
Stuchies lectures are a waste of time. he confuses material and talks about things which you are not even tested on. its not worth getting up at 7:30am to go. the final is 45% of ur grade and its not curved but the final grade is. once in a while he blows up something but he gets random cough attacks and needs to be corrected by students on stuff
He's really funny with his random experiments during lectures. However, sometimes his lectures weren't worth getting up at 7:30AM. BUT, it IS possible to pass this class. Just do exceptionally OK on midterms, do well on labs, and study the concepts hard, becuase the practice midterm is nothing like the actual midterm. I got a B for his class.
He's a really nice guy & shows you his passion for the subject, but he goes off on tangents and then tries to make up for it by cramming more info in the end. He spends too much time on simple things and not enough on hard things. Good thing we had a good TA. You really have to be independent and motivated to do well in his class.
I found the final easier than the two midterms. He didn't stick to the book very much, but instead tried to teach chem in an intersting and abstract way. The best part was watching hydrogen balloons explode at 8:00 in the morning
sweet man, but the most difficult to understand. class curve is good tho, but ull think ur failing until he posts final grades. u can fail 1 mdtrm, barely pass the other, fail the final, get a B in lab, n pull a C in the class. i wouldnt recommend him tho, u spend days studying for exams, end up failing them all anyway, n lectures are pointless.
I loved Stuchebrukhov. I know practically everyone hated him but I felt that he was a good teacher. His accent isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Explains things well and is very amusing. He's actually quite a funny guy. Also, I thought his class was easier than the other 2A profs at the time. I'd definitely take him again, even at 7:30am.
His experiments are awesome. His teaching sucks... I don't get the stuff at all. His homework has nothing to do with the exam. Exams are super easy though. Overall, a crappy but easy and cool teacher.
Not very good at lectures. I stopped paying attention the 3rd week and just did Sudoku instead. Midterm 1 was a carbon copy of his example test, but Midterm 2 was no where near the example. The overall class wasn't too bad...just don't take it at 7:30 in the morning.
This guy is totally going to screw you over with grades. His tests are HARD! His lecture is HARD to understand. His office hours are useless because he doesnt know his basics. STAY AWAY!!! nice guy though...
It's hard to concentrate at 7:30 in the morning and his lecture is pointless. His accent is HARD to understand, and his test is HARD. The 1st midterm, average is 60/100. I am pretty strong in math 21b but still find the class challenging b/c we have to learn stuff on our own. If it is not b/c I had chem in HS, guess I already fail.
Early morning chemistry = bad idea. He's really enthusiastic about the subject, but I could really care less at 7:30 in the morning. Always says we should all be chemists. Lectures are REALLY long, really boring. Have to rely heavily on the TAs, and mine sucked.
It's hard to understand him so early in the morning. He is quite enthusiastic about the subject, but it is sooo hard to concentrate in his class. I'm just glad that my TA is a better teacher than him. If you take his class, pray you get a good TA, because that's where you'll be learning all your material.
this class sucked. the material was really hard as it is and this guy just made it worse. he has a pretty thick russian accent and you can never understand what he says. his tests are hard, most people got from 60-70% on them. the fact that the class was at 7:30 didn't help much. don't take it with him if you can avoid it.
Nice guy. That's about it. Tests are difficult, TA's don't speak english, and he is difficult to follow in lecture (especially at 7:30). Avoid this teacher. Great guy and his accent is humorous, but thats about it.
Class in the morning wasn't a problem. I will however agree with everyone else when they say his Russian accent makes it difficult to understand him. But even if he didn't have a strong accent, he still would've been quite boring, but then again all lecture is boring. As with all chem classes, rely on discussion. Usually the TA's explain better.
I won't lie, he's easily one of the worst teachers I've had in my life. I even went to his office hours and he didn't help me or listen to what I had to say for that matter. His accent makes it hard to understand some of the things he says and he definitely makes things more confusing..or at best, doesn't teach well at all.
Okay, Alexei is like a talking robot! Sometimes he crack you up cuz he's not really fimilar with the topic that much. Lecture @ 7:30Am is goan kill y'all!! Seriously, I didn't go to any lectures since the first day!! Tips: Read the book, do the assigned h.w problems and go over the sample midterms (they are similar to the actual.) His presentation
his lectures are so boring...hard to understand because of accent...just read book..going to his lectures 730 in the morning in useless... i didn't learn anything from him..needed to read book and learn myself
LOL. Don't listen to the negatives. This man really cared for his students unlike the other profs, and wanted us to succeed. He held review sessions, when he didnt have to. The midterms are easy if you understand the practice ones. He may not teach the best, but he really tries hard to help you out. (FUNNY Accent + 730am demonstrations) = fun :-)
Midterm, Final = EASY!! just do the practice tests it's carbon copy!! finals = about 5 problems were EXACT copy of final practice problem. HE IS CLEARLY HERE TO RESEARCH he was upset for not winning nobel prize. hard to understand, but easiest test ever!! oh and you have to get good TA or you'll die
He's bad. That is all you need to know.
All I can say is, READ THE BOOK and DO the practice mid-terms/finals. Understand the material well, not just try to get bits and pieces of the material. He has an accent, once you get used to it, it isn't that bad. The curve is really low, set low, so if you have a failing grade on a nomral grading scale, don't freak. =)
Lecture isn't matadory. In fact, you can skip lecture if you want to sleep in because, let's face it, the class is so dang early! And he doesn't really make too much sense, even after you get pas the face that he has an accent. Just read the book and do the practice midterms/final he posts up. UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL WELL. =)
I found his tests to be very easy and similar to the practice ones.It helped that I had a group of friends coming from other chem classes to study with. Morning lectures were a drag and going felt pointless; but if you're a morning person you have the edge against people like me. Many of my classmates did poorly though so good curve.
This class was so annoying. i took it at 730 in the morning and it was so difficult to stay awake the last leg. i recommend reading and if you are too lazy, you should definately go to chem workshops. i got a 52% and a 63% on the first midterms but i did extremely well on the final and i pulled a B. the midterms are harder than the practice ones.
dont go TO his LECTURE>.. .... jst stay home n get more sleep dat will help u to get a better grade..oh well. but tests are easy....so dont worry jst read n sleep .u will do fine..
It's recommended that you don't take this class at 7:30 AM. You don't have to go to lectures because you'll just fall asleep and the notes you take you can easily get from the book. He is a nice man, though. He seems very passionate about his subject and helping students understand. The curves are very good.
Nice guy. 7:30 is just way too early though, not worth it. If you can find a different class at a more reasonable time, take it. Class was good though. If you read the book before lecture, you'll understand more, but thats with any chem class. The final was very doable, and from what i hear, easier then other profs. Not bad overall, but not great.
His accent is VERY problematic. The textbook had many errors, but that was probably due to it being brand new and of the first print group.
It was just really hard to keep up with what he was saying and his examples were hard to understand. Also, beware, the practice midterms are NOTHING like the actual midterms.
His accent + 7:30am lecture aren't the best combination. He does seem passionate about what he's teaching though and tries to make it fun/funny, but still, with his accent, it was a bit hard to understand him half the time. I'm so glad I had an awesome TA to help me through the class, but if you don't, READ THE BOOK.
730am class=sleep. Print off his lectures. READ THE BOOK. get a tutor/use the ones in the dorms for free. Practice midterms & finals same questions asked, just with different values/numbers. Study like mad the night before. Got a B+ & was shocked outta my freakin mind. Curves are sweet. His accent isnt. GOOD LUCK!!
like others have said, do NOT take chem 2A this early in the morning. stuchebrukhov has a thick accent and it's hard to pay attention. lectures are almost pointless, just download the powerpoints and study the book. CURVE IS HUGE. practice midterms are like real ones, final is like practice and has some stuff off midterms. good luck, have fun! :)
Great professor! Does have an accent but you can still understand him. 7:30am a little early and nodded off sometimes but this guy is actually pretty funny. Class was not hard (I'm not an A student but I got an A). I think he's an easy prof compared to others. I'd take him again.
biggest jerk ever. he chewed a kid out right in front of the class for asking a question. he can't teach and is rude. if i get him for chemistry next quarter i'm dropping the class
He is so hard and you can't understand him at all. He is terrible at answering your questions simply because he can't understand why you don't understand a subject so simple. And, unfortunately, his midterms and usually nothing like the practice one so rely on your TA to guide you in the right direction. Avoid at all costs!!
Most of the complaints here have been about his accent although I didn't find it to be that difficult to get through. The lectures were helpful and the practice midterms were too. As long as you read the textbook you should be fine, also the midterms tended to have very low averages so the curve was nice for those who read the book.
Sometimes hard to understand, interesting demos, overall not that bad of a teacher however anything is hard to learn at 7:30 am
I thought that this professor was really hard to understand; however, if you find a good TA, read the book, and do practice problems and the practice tests, you will do well..it just takes more of an effort on your part to get a decent grade..
I don't think he's as bad as everyone is saying. The key to success is by reading the book and going to discussions. He curves really well, I got a 87% in the class and I got an A. Yeah, he's a little hard to understand, but he's a funny guy. Just read the book and study for the exams and you'll do fine.
7:30 time kinda sucked... made it a lot easier to miss lecture. But then again, lectures weren't that useful if you read the book. First midterm wasen't too bad... the second was a little more challenging...and the final was pretty decent. Overall, it was an ok class and his accent was NOT that bad. Just study and you should be fine.
ok 730 is not good if your not a mornin person this teacher was ok he is funny the lectures was pretty useless didnt help but like most classes if you read the book you will probably do fine me i didnt go to class or read the book(got a B)my advice to U is really just make sure you do the labs read book and if you have a good TA go to discussion
7:30am is tough, especially for Chem. He often glossed over difficult material and focused too much time on simpler concepts. Explained familiar chemistry concepts in confusing ways. My TA, luckily, was amazing and taught me most of CHE2A. Midterms were difficult, Final was easy. Got an A. However, I would not recommend him. Ever.
730 was wayy too early. I slept through 75% of lectures and went to 2 discussions. Just read the chapter and do the homework problems and youll be ok. Do the practice mid terms. The mid terms are always harder then the practice ones just be sure to know the strange cases of certain atoms. (cu) The final was cake. Would not take again , too early.
Very strong accent which makes it really hard to focus in 7:30AM class. More of a researcher than a professor. Exams are very similar to practice exams. Final was super easy, and curve was okay. No need to attend lectures, just read the book and learn it by yourself.
Ehhh... Not so good.
7:30am is a very early class. Enroll in his class if a)you're a morning person or b)you don't plan on attending lectures anyway. His class was not difficult, but I had to depend on my TA, workshop, another professor (Enderle!) and myself to really understand the material. He is nice, but not good at teaching.
Difficult to understand, and not just because of the accent. I went to (almost all) his lectures, but had to go to a different professor's lectures (Enderle's!--highly recommended) to really understand the material. I also had a great TA. Because I went to Enderle's lectures and discussions, I didn't have to read the book or do the HW.
again, 7:30 am lecture is tough. I went to about half of the lectures. Do all of the practice mid terms, the actual ones are almost identical. Be sure to get answers to questions that you missed on the mid terms from your TA and understand them, the final is basically composed of the mid terms.
I only got A- on this class because I took AP Chem in high school. You don't need to attend lectures; he can't teach anyways. He reades directly off the powerpoint, so this class you can preety much self-study. Attend other professor's lectures and just study on your own from the book and practice midterm. I have to say the tests are fairly easy.
"have" is really not that hard of a word to pronounce...the times that i did make it to lecture in the morning..i either fell asleep or got so irritated with his accent and lecturing that i had to leave during the break....its amazing i passed...i had to read every chapter in the textbook.
He gets the job done. Decent tests, but boring class. He gets an A for showing enthusiasm in the subject, but not too exciting for lecture. Reasonable curves. Reading before-hand is a good idea, overall, average teacher.
Nice prof but hard to understand and pay attention to. Powerpoints weren't too informative or detailed. Felt as if he was explaining research instead of teaching to students. Didn't really show us how to solve problems. I barely attended class since it was so early and didn't learn much. Managed a B thanks to my TA.
He really is hard to understand because of his accent, and he bases his exams off of the homework and textbook. Don't go to lecture. Go to discussion, read the textbook, do the homework, go to tutoring, work hard. He curves well, so if you're better than everyone else then you're set. I got an A+ in his class ^__^
He talks more about research than material. Second practice midterm didn't have questions from a whole chapter. I think I only did well because topics mostly were from HS, but reading the book and discussion definitely helps. Lectures weren't very helpful, but blowing up balloons filled with hydrogen gas was pretty cool. Has an accent.
Although he doesn't explain concepts very well he is very fair with tests and the grading of the tests. It takes a little extra work to receive a good grade because lecture is not very helpful.
his class is super easy!!! although i didn't go to 3/4 of the lectures, i learnt everything from the textbook... btw, his practice midterms were similar to the real midterms!! some questions on the final were exactly the same from the practice final!!! well,, it's probably i took AP Chem in high school...
I had him for Chem 2A. It was extremely boring, but also pretty easy. You really don't need to go to lecture if you're good about reading the book and doing all the practice problems. Like I said, lectures are very boring, he just kinda mumbles along in his Russian accent. The midterms are either really easy or they get curved a lot.
ok prof
He is not as bad as many on here say. His accent is pretty easy to understand, although I suppose it may seem worser at 7:30 in the morning. His class is very easy if you put in the effort. Pay attention to the textbooks and his practice exams and you will do well in the class. He also gives a very nice curve. His demos are very fun too!
Terrible, terrible prof. I had him my freshman year (Fall'08)and it was a horrifying experience. He would say things weren't going to be on the midterm and then they would be. Avoid him at ALL costs. Also, who the hell wants to take a 7:30AM chem class?
It's very hard to understand him... Lectures are waste of time (at 7:30am)...Find good TA and read a textbook on ur own... Midterms and finals are easy with well curving... Try to avoid this professor or attend the classes of the other one... Good luck!
Professor Stuchebrukhov was one of the better professors I've had in he chemistry department at UC Davis. He uses his notes rather than the textbook, which are more compact, easy to follow, and come straight to the point. His test aren't that demanding and he is a fair grader. His lectures are interesting and gives you what you need to know.
He is a nice guy and one of the more fair teachers in the department. Don't bother with the book, the tests are just like the practice midterms, so study those kinda of problems. Lecture notes are also very helpful.
Great Professor. Really glad I had the chance to take 110C with him. The course allowed me to end on a good note.
Professor Stuchebrukhov is a great instructor. He understands the nuances of thermodynamics and does his best to communicate intriguing aspects of the subject. The homework can be lengthy sometimes but the grading is generous. Exams are fairly straightforward with fair grading.
Great professor! Be ready to attend every lectures because there is not lecture recording (even though he will post old lecture notes). And his lectures are fun and interactive. Homework are easy but exam weighs a lot. Do all the practice tests and you will be fine.
Great to have as a professor! Very funny in lecture and is very passionate about thermodynamics. Homeworks are easy and tests are mainly based on practice problems from lectures.
This class was relatively easy. Do the practice exams and review his lecture material and you'll be fine (the homework isn't super relevant). Also, discussion is very helpful for homework/exam prep. Professor's lectures were engaging and fun. Don't underestimate the final too much though.
The professor is engaging and passionate about the subject. Homeworks are manageable, and exams are straightforward. I found Unstuck study and practice problems from lectures helpful for studying. Overall, a rewarding class experience.
