Shes fun, young and cool. Talks FAST but she knows her stuff.
This is a great class to take!!! Prof. Harris knows what she is talking about. She gives extra credit and wants students to do things that take place off the campus. She is always there if you need help or just want to talk!! She even learns your name and values your opinions...how rare!
Alexes is my favorite professor at UW. She's very sweet, has a lot of energy and is very smart. She definitely values your opinions. She's not so much focused on your grades like the majority of the professors b/c she cares more about what you have learned throughout the quarter. As long as she sees an improvement, you'll do well in the class. High
A great teacher. She is heavy in community action so she has a great perspective. Lots of guests to discuss issues, so its interesting. Big class, and its not an easy class but you can still do well. She has a very inviting personality, not to mention cute. Called 2pac an "urban sociologist". Gotta feel that.
i liked her ... she is very sweet and down to earth. she is young and very accomplished and is in touch with her students. the class wasnt that interesting but i would recommend her as an instructor.
She was a great instructor. Quite organized with her power points. Very welcoming and loves class discussions. Lectures weren't the most interesting, but are "mandatory" if you want a good grade. Most exam questions come from her lectures. She was also quick to responding to my emails.
Not an easy class but she is a great instructor!
Prof. Harris is a very good teacher. She is pretty clear in her requirements and makes the tests primary based on her lectures and are fairly easy if u study from the slides. Readings are pretty interesting, and I strongly encourage to do service learning for the final paper instead of the regular boring research that you do for all of your classe
TALKS FAST. Do extra credit. Read the book even if she said its to reenforce lectures. The PPs are more of bullet points than actual info. The info comes from her and she give it really fast. The two midterms are hard but the final was pretty easy. Going to lecture didn't help me very much but she is interested and loves sociology.
Service learning was great. Exams are easy. She reiterates EVERYTHING and uses her hands way too much. I couldn't watch her if I wanted to hear what she had to say. The ideas presented in the course did not seem original or complex. Good entry level course if you need to up you gpa I guess.
Prof. Harris is such a great teacher.. She keeps the lectures entertaining and the material was actually interesting.. The tests are mainly from her lectures but readying the book ensures you understand the material. The service learning option is a must.. wayyyy easier than the regular option.. Overall it's a great class..
great teacher
She speaks to the class in a condescending way. She also goes through the material too fast to take notes. Her powerpoints and exams are really poorly written, and she can't even interpret her own graphs. If you do the service learning option your paper is easier and you don't need to buy the textbook. I really didn't learn anything in this class.
Take this class! Alexes is a wonderful professor. Gives plenty of examples, gives questions to tests in lecture. Do extra credit--get 2 points normally which is 2% added to your grade. Helps alot. Some questions on tests are difficult, but most straight forward. Never used textbook, she goes over everything you need. Powerpoints online.
Prof.Harris is amazing. She loves sociology and her lectures are interesting. She makes everything crystal clear and easy to understand. Go to her lectures and study from her lecture notes from the class web site, and you can get 3.8. She made this class fun. Also, always has an answer to all the questions and if she doesnt's, she finds it.
Alexes Harris is a great, engaging teacher! The subject matter is a little wishy-washy and all about opinion & ideology, which gets a little annoying. But I learned a lot of interesting stuff, too. DEFINITELY attend lecture, as the tests pull entirely from that rather than the book. Quiz section is also helpful.
2 midterms, a research paper (do the serv. learning option), participation, and the final in total are worth 100 pts, so it takes A LOT of work to succeed. I'm not a fan of her grading system. On the midterm, 42/45 mult choice & 3.5/5 short answer=3.3 grade. Go to class & section, & do the extra credit. This class is not easy, but it is interesting
She was a great lecturer! Spoke kind of fast, but lectures available online, emphasized important stuff. GO TO LECTURE, gives hints about what will be asked and what's important. Textbook rarely used. DO SERVICE LEARNING OPTION! She made the class really interesting. Not hard to ace this class, trust me. Attended lectures, never read, got a 4.0.
Harris is interested in what she's talking about so it makes learning interesting. She tries to engage the students a lot, go to class and the material is very easy and clear. Also she gives extra credit options in class. I didn't do the service option and got a better grade on my paper that service learners, so I think your grade depends on TA.
It was a 450 person class, and she engaged all of us in the topics she was discussing which I really liked. All of her tests come straight from lecture and she's very clear about what we need to know. Definitely attend lectures, and study from her lecture notes. She's a hard teacher, but super friendly.
I didn't bother reading the book, I only used her lectures as a study guide and got a 4.0. She gives tons of extra credit opportunity too. Easy class... Teacher really cares about us actually learning sociology though
I LOVED professor Harris. Very helpful and is willing to make her students learn to the fullest. Tests are easy and clear, but they do depend on your TA. One thing I did not like abt SOC 270 is that there is an entire section about AIDS! It was not mentioned on the class description. And the class was not very interesting. Best thing was harris:)
She's super enthusiastic about sociology, and she really wants students to do well. She's also very helpful if you have questions or feedback. It's very important to attend her lectures because the exams are based on what she talks about in class and the examples she gives.
I really liked Prof. Harris because she is obviously very passionate about the subject and loves teaching it. She brings in guests to talk to the class and connects everything extremely well, so it's fairly clear. Tests are also pretty straightforward. I highly recommend the class!
Professor Harris seemed very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and always came to lecture prepared. She posts the slides online, and while reading is assigned, I didn't find it necessary in preparation for the exams. She offers extra credit assignments, too. Good class overall, I would recommend it!
Professor Harris is very helpful! Her lectures are never boring, and she really projects material well to the class
It's nice to see a professor with that much passion for her field of study and willingness to assist her students. The class was not really what I expected, but it was an interesting class regardless. I learned so much and now I am able to see the world in a new light. Don't worry about the book. Unless the course changes, you won't need it.
She is a really great professor. I'm surprised that she is able to turn a 300-student lecture into a "quiz section" - she is really good at engaging students to talk about how they feel about things. It's nice to know that students can speak more than professor in a lecture.
she is such an amazing professor I ever have. Though the lecture is not mandatory, her Lecture is very engaging. I would say the participation really affecting the grade. She gives out many of the extra credit to the students.
She's so dope! Inspirational and super smart and amazing. Highly recommend her.
Lecture was super interesting. She takes the time to answer questions clearly and throws some jokes in every once in a while.
Professor Harris is by far the best professor I have ever had at the UW so far! She is really interested in her students learning and makes lectures interesting. She loves to give out extra credit and exam questions on days when many people skip so go to class! Easy and interesting class. I would take another class of her's!
I like a passionate professor and Professor Harris was definitely one of those! She liked engaging the class and having open discussions about the topics of the day. You pretty much have to come to class everyday to stay in the loop, but extra credit was given out several times and can save you on tests, which were on the harder side.
SOC270: Social Problems isn't the most immensely interesting course in the world but it is not hard Professor Harris is extremely talented at what she does. She is the most engaging and down-to-earth professor I've had thus far at UW. I want to take SOC362 now just to listen to her talk!
No textbook but some readings which you'll do fine without looking at. Quiz sections aren't necessary and the lectures really aren't either but she only announces extra credit assignments during lecture. Tests are super easy and the short answer questions aren't hard either. I just studied off lecture notes and got a 105% in the class.
Love Professor Harris. She did a great job at keeping everyone involved without letting the room run the class. She doesn't take up the whole hour and a half if she doesn't need to. Readings and quiz sections are useless but they're good for review. The tests can be difficult because she covers a lot of material and doesn't give you a study guide.
Harris was a little too scattered for my taste. Her notes didn't really guide her lecturing well, so it was hard to follow. No set criteria for four written memo assignments making it difficult to write. Quiz section not necessary. Lecture not necessary unless you want the few (very low points) extra credit opps.
Said stuff that I laughed at constantly. VERY intimidating during office hours. That was my one problem in that class, I didn't know how to talk to her. She is very respected. I'm pretty sure she got a standing ovation on the last day of Spring Qtr. Turned me into a democrat. Plus she's just smart and successful and these are important issues
The articles are usually pretty dry, but the lectures are great. If you're a die-hard note taker during lecture, bring your laptop and have the slides up, because she moves fast. In exams and memos, make sure to tie everything back to a perspective and a researcher! Professor Harris is a someone who is passionate about what she does, and it shows
Interesting lectures always posted online. Funny and passionate professor . Quiz section usually not important except before midterms. Readings aren't necessary more like references.
Very clear and understandable. Easy to talk to when asking questions.
There are 3 tests and several short papers in this class. She is a really tough grader, I formed outside study groups and felt really prepared for every test, but never got more than an 85 on anything. There is also no clear rubric for the papers and she doesn't give you feedback on them until the next one is past due, so you can't fix the next one
Professor Harris has been one of my favorite professors at UW! SOC 270 was really interesting (especially when she integrated information about her own personal research), and she just had a really great vibe. All of the TAs were really cool too, and she seemed to have a really good relationship & a lot of respect for them.
SOC362 ONLINE 2 midterms and a final (60%). Course project (20%) Homework & Discussions (20%). Extra credit (3-4%) 95% 4.0 94% 3.9 Little online response from instructor. A much better teacher in the classroom from what I've heard.
Took her online class in Winter. Weekly readings, slideshow(s), discussion and quizzes. She has you write a few short papers, do 2 mid terms, one final, and a final project which is a 6-8 page paper. She does offer some extra credit. Overall the class was not that difficult, it was just very time consuming.
Solid and fun teacher The material is very structured and easy to understand. As long as you come to class, pay attention, and stay on top of all of the vocab you're set. Tough grading scale, every point counts, so do the extra credit.
I love this woman. She's every college student's dream teacher. Gives extra credit, easy tests, good lecturer. Only thing is that the current assignments are graded a little tough but go into TA office hours and they'll help. If you go to class she gives you the answers for the extra credit. Theres 3 midterms I got a 92, 95, and a 97.
Interesting class
Professor Harris has pretty good lectures and will have at least one guest speaker. She gives out plenty of extra credit options and I recommend to do them. She tells you the four homework assignments in the beginning. You also will have three exams in the class. Also, you don't need a book she gives you the articles to read online.
Such a lovely teacher! She really, really cares about her students. She loves discussions and learning about her students' experiences. It really helped me learn about the real effects of racism in society. Offers a ton of extra credit. Very funny, kind professor. Class isn't difficult, just go to class and pay attention.
Very interesting class.
Alexes is so engaging in class that it's almost impossible to space out or forget to pay attention. There is a lot of reading, which is important to do in order to do well on exams, but she covers the basics of it in class. No text books, lots of extra credit assignments and she's very easy to talk to outside of class.
Professor Harris isn't a great teacher. Her slides and lectures are disorganized and make it hard to tell what exactly she's talking about. She talks/skips slides too quickly. Tests are fairly difficult. When people can't answer he questions she berates the class rather than clarifying. She seems to think she's being clearer than she is. 4/10
She is funny, passionate, and very smart. Lectures are clear, and readings are important. Graded on 3 cumulative midterms and 4 assignments. She is very clear on what you need to know. Just go to class, quiz section sometimes, study, skim the readings, and you'll do well. Interesting class. Great for an intro to Sociology.
I am currently in professor Alexes soc 270 class. She is a very caring professor and is very dedicated to what she teaches. I must say that she talks and goes over her lectures very fast! Sometime's it's hard to keep up. You can't miss class or else you'll be lost! She posts her lectures online but not very detailed. Do the extra credit !!
Lecture notes are hard to understand, I attended every single lecture but still unable to catch up, impossible to pass if you just study from the lecture notes. Midterms are hard, no study guide given and no practice questions or past examples, have no idea what and how to review. Harris is a great scholar, but not a great teacher.
honestly this class sucks, Professor harris is a great person and seems very bright, although her lectures are all over the place and not very specific on what we are actually supposed to know. The material is interesting, but I still have a hard time paying attention because I don't see any distinct subject lines. Not an easy 4.0
Professor Harris is passionate about sociology and it truly shows during her lectures! Even with the big classroom size she always made an effort to answer questions. Make sure to attend lectures as she tends to hint what are on her tests. The overall workload weekly wasn't ever stressful and manageable.
I will not recommend this class and this professor to others, she is strict and it is hard to get a good grade
The class had very little work but it is an extremely hard A. Have to ace every midterm/analytic memo to have a shot at 3.7+. Do all extra credit because this changes ur grade by about .3
Not an easy class. You have to put efforts in it. Three midterms and four short papers. The first midterm was extremely hard but it got better as long as you go to class and study A LOT before the exam. She is very respected and professional but not a good teacher. Quiz sections are useless. Don't do service learning unless you really want to do
Harris is one of the greatest lecturers ever. Her class is broken down into three explicit units that are relevant and useful in society. Harris has a wonderful character which projects onto all of her students the love and passion she shares for the subject. She's exceptionally cool, funny, and easy to talk to about anything. Take SOC270 please.
Shes very passionate in what she teaches, and shes also very caring. There were assigned readings you have to memorize (author/perspectives.) Quiz sections were boring, but before exams we did a jeopardy on study questions. There were 3 midterms which werent easy, as well as 4 papers. Service learning prompts seemed WAY easier than non SLs.
Alexes Harris is an amazing professor and person! She really cares about her students and how they understand the material. She's super funny and makes class fun. There is reading before every class and some of it can be kind of long (30-50 pages) and it's important for the tests so definitely do it.
She's dope and really funny. Her class wasn't that hard, except for the 30-40 pages of reading every week. She's passionate about sociology and makes the class really interesting. Quiz sections were useless. Exams were mostly multiple choice with 3 short answers and some extra credit opportunities.
Easy class, interesting lectures, straightforward tests.
Harris is confused by her own slides and cannot answer students' questions that extrapolate beyond her specific prepared material. She reuses tests from past classes, 1) not letting you see the test after getting your score back and 2) does NOT edit the questions enough. Even if you go to class, do hw, go to quiz section, the tests will fail you.
Alexes was a fantastic, engaged, and caring professor. You are always confident in her knowledge, as well as how much she cares about her student's. This class was a fresh and eye-opening approach to tough concepts, and I was incredibly grateful for the experience.
Professor Harris is one of the most engaging professors I have had at UW. She is understanding, empathetic, candid- everything you want in a professor. If the class is hard, you won't notice because it will be genuinely interesting. She does not tolerate when you interrupt her or talk over her. Just raise your hand before blurting out, please.
Professor Harris is hands down my favorite professor from autumn 2019. She engages with the class, cares about her students, and is really funny. The class is an easy A if you show up to lecture, take notes, and study. Also, she gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities! If I had the option to take any class with her in the future, I would!
Harris is really invested in the class so the lectures are not boring. Grading scale is tough 100% needed for 4.0 but it's possible. DO the extra credit every point counts. Class consists of three midterms (no final) and four memos that are 1-2 pages each. Don't skip lectures before and after midterms she gives out questions for the next test.
Prof. Harris is really a gem. She's a passionate researcher with a very deep understanding-particularly on the issues of criminal justice reform. A good class if you're aware of social issues and want to understand them from another perspective or someone who isn't aware and wants to learn from a good source. skim readings+going to lectureeasy 4.0
I loved her class. what a caring and amazing professor. She gives the answer for the extra credit the day before the exam which is why it is really helpful to go to class every time. she has extra credit opportunities like the song emails and stuff like that. really easy assignments. the class is very enjoyable! would take again.
Professor Harris is great. Her lectures for this class were all pre recorded but her knowledge and passion for the subject is clear and her lectures are easy to follow and helpful for preparing for exams. This class was easy and very enlightening, and I would definitely recommend it.
she is extremely kind and passionate about what she does. she is doing great during these times and everything is recorded. there were 3 midterms, 4 analytic memos, and several extra credit opportunities. if you take clear notes from the pre-recorded lectures (literally copy and paste everything there) you should succeed on the midterms (open note)
Social Problems 270 was definitely one of the best classes I've taken at UW so far. Professor Harris is super nice and her lectures were really interesting, I definitely recommend! There is a decent amount of reading but I was really interested in the content so I didn't mind. She also offers extra credit!
Despite long lectures and pretty substantial readings, Professor Harris is engaging and fun, and great at keeping student interest. Writing assignments are super manageable and tests seem straight-forward with little-to-no trick questions. Professor Harris is always cheery and excited to talk sociology, which definitely helps too!
Professor Harris is clearly very passionate about what she teaches and it made 270 an easy class to show up to. I know a lot of people were confused by the theory, but show up to lecture, sit in the front, and ask questions and you will do well and get a lot out of this class. Highly recommend!
Differentiating the theories are the key to the class. Analytic memos took time but manageable. The organization of the course was flawed. I wish she listed learning objectives to help study for exams. Tests were on easy side -- not much memorization. Other than that, Professor Harris is an exceptional and passionate teacher! (100% or more= 4.0)
Professor Harris is great! I would definitely take her classes again! Lectures are very engaging and not much coursework. If you attend lectures and quiz sections and do assignments you will get an A!
Such a gem! Super low-stakes grading so you can really just focus on enjoying learning. Keeps lectures engaging and is also just an awesome person - I'm not a soc major but I admire her so much for her life story and professional work. I wish I went to office hours more just to hear more from her & really hope I get to take another of her classes!
1. No recording for the lecture. You must understand the point on the class. Reading papers are required(and she will test it on exams for 2-5 multiple choice question) 2. 4 Analytic Memos+ 3 Exams+ Extra Credit. The grading of Analytic Memos and Free responses in Exams is not strict. Not that hard to get a 3.8.
The content was applicable and valuable! Class organization was confusing tho. I wish she had objectives to track learning. Lectures get off topic but still intellectually stimulating. It's clear that Harris is passionate abt her research and class. Analytic memos took a bit of time TAs grade lightly tho. Exams are on easy side, less memorization.
I really enjoyed Professor Harris' class overall. She's really engaging during lectures even though she only talks about information that's on the slides unless asked about something. Not much homework, 4 papers and 3 midterms but everything is simple as long as you attend lecture.
Wonderful lecturer, really great research and I genuinely enjoyed my time in her class. Midterms and final were pretty simple and as long as you were paying attention minimal studying was needed.
As my first college course in SOC, this was an incredibly insightful class, that can be applied to all different aspects of your life. Harris is extremely intelligent and inspiring, and this is one of my favorite classes I've ever taken. No matter what standing (freshman or senior), this class is for everyone.
Professor Harris was inspirational, knowledgeable, and very understanding. She gives multiple opportunities for extra credit and has amazing TAs. No study guides for tests, but they are very straightforward, and she will give you some answers if you show up to the lectures. Overall an amazing professor and would love to have another class with her
My favorite professor yet. She is very knowledgeable but still cares about her students and is really friendly. People complain that she talks fast but it was the perfect speed to keep me engaged the whole lecture. There are a lot of readings but you don't have to read them to do well in the class. Quiz sections and TAs were great too.
very good professor. tests aren't too hard but she no longer does open note. she cares a lot about each subject you learn about and she cares a lot for her students. would take her class again.
Professor Harris lectures where very fun and engaging she always found a way to get us involved in class. She prepares you for the test by doing a lecture of an overview of what to expect in the tests! Its important to go to lectures as she gives out more information and she is very passionate in teaching.
I loved this class and professor. There is quite a bit of content and you definitely have to study for the tests. There were three short essays that had clear instructions and the TAs were very helpful. Class is engaging and professor Harris is super friendly. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities both as assignments and on the tests,
She's so intelligent and well-versed, and a huge inspiration. Her lectures are incredibly eye-opening and informative; I would highly recommend this class to any SOC majors or anyone even slightly interested in sociology. Incredibly interesting and made me even think about changing my major to SOC.
