Hard to Understand, Doesn't make Bio interesting at all. Quizes easy, Tests NOT
Great teacher, you put a little effort into class, you'll get an A
Doesn't explain things very well and uses the overhead too much.
lecture is awful but notes and study guides are on bb & are very helpful
He has an accent thats hard to listen to,no explanations
I had him for 112 lab is he was easy, also a really cool guy
hard to understand, and sometimes gets off topic, causing confusion
Overhead happy!! What'd he say?? I think he confused himself.
should attend class, has a humorous side
No Comments
study notes and do the study guides - you will get an A, class dull so skip
He is hard to follow, likes to jump from subjects.Exam&quizs r relatively ez
boring class, very unclear, tests pretty easy, goes off topic a lot
Easy class, skip often.
Skip. Always was arguing with him, so I'd skip and only go for tests. Got an A.
Study guide and blackboard notes very helpful. Skip class and still pass exams.
Nice guy, but hard to understand
Smart man. Has a sense of humor if you get to know him
Great prof. good class. use blackboard notes. little hard to understand. good
Very smart teacher. Class was very easy if you attend.
He knows what he's talking about. If you get to know him, he's really cool.
GREAT guy. go to class, work hard you'll do well
Very unorganized and sometimes unclear about things. Tends to wonder of topic and gets you way behind.
VERY interesting, very knowlegdable man. One of the best classes I've ever taken. Love the accent, too.
bad professor very unclear in what he expects on tests dont take it early in the morn
Worst prof in Dept. Unclear and unorganized. Gets offensive and makes you feel dumb when you ask questions outside of class.
Easy class, studied the night before and still did well on exams. Tends to wander off topic but tests are over the notes on blackboard.

HORRIBLE Prof, only time this site as failed me! Knowledgeable guy, but unclear and doesn't care about students.
i think he was great, you get what you put in, but the man knows what he is talking about and offers plenty of resources.
He doesn't have the ability to help a student on a one on one basis level. When asked for help in office hours he wasn't able to do anything except for reciting his lectures.
Smart guy, unfortunately he can't share that with those of us who arent expert bio students. I did great on Exams, SUCKY HARD QUIZZES, good grade overall. But I dont think I have learned anything. expects that you know "the basics" but his basic
I hated this Professor because he is very unclear, doesn't know how to explain well, belittles students that asks or answers questions, and he is an overall jerk. The class average on most of the tests and quizzes were always a 50%.
Knows his stuff, funny at times too. Read the book and do the study guides and you'll be set.
He is not a good professor. He does not explain things well, goes off topic, and tests you on material that he never mentions!
Good prof., really knows what he is talking about but isn't very clear in presenting the material. Can be very confusing at times. Be prepared to use your book and the cd from the book a lot! Awesome accent though!
He posts good notes on blackboard. Make notecards from his study guides and they will help you for the test. Funny guy, with an accent. Lectures sometimes boring. Not that bad.
He is a hard teacher...sorry...but just go to lecutre and ask questions...he acts pissed when you ask...but it is better than not knowing...and study
Very good professor, and a nice guy. He's willing to help if you ask for it and if you put the time into it you should do fine.
I did not like this professor. He was very unclear about everything he talks about. He will start off talking with a normal voice and ends up trailing off into a whisper. Wouldnt reccommend him to anyone.
Not bad over all but be ready for some tough quizes.
Smart Funny Guy who sounds like a person from russia in a James Bond Movie...But i saw so many people fall asleep in class. Also He would come out of no where with tests. Shoulda Read and used the cd. Get ready to read on your own!
boring professor. better off reading the book than going to class. goes off on tangents and doesnt cover stuff in the notes but puts it on the tests. not that bad though...study and you'll be fine. i got a B
Boring first 3 weeks, make sure you keep going to classes cause what happens after could screw you. Teaches very well, and you will enjoy him if you can get past the fact that he thinks you are stupid. Actually found him quite interesting.
He's a good teacher. He genuinely cares about the students, and will answer questions (in a round about way). The crazy Ukrainean is definately a great Bio professor....and cracks pretty good jokes (but you gotta listen really hard for those!) :)
You can do well in this class if you read the material and follow the outline provided. His lectures are a bit hard to understand and he goes off on subjects that you will not be tested on.
My experience with him is that he's been quite helpful in the higher level bio courses. Sometimes you need to ask him to clarify things because he is very knowledgeable about the subject and he assumes that knowledge from others when it's not there.
Did not like this class at all. He assumes you know as much as he does and is unclear. Hard to understand sometimes b/c of his accent.
Good variety in teaching method. A little difficult to understand at first, but you get used to the accent.
A little boring and hard to understand at first but once you get farmiliar with him and the class he can be rather amusing. His tests really arn't that hard and he generaly tells you whats on it.
Very intelligent and nice guy, the Ukranian accent and his dry sense of humor make for an amusing class.
Overall a good, very knowledgable teacher. He's pretty funny too.
Fun and interesting class, humorous at times to lighten us up, but "word is bond" means nothing, right Dr. Nik? If you have a problem, get his response to that problem in writing so he doesn't screw you like he did me. He is a good prof, but I have ZERO respect for him as a person.
when he lectures, he likes to present questions but not answers to the questions. On the exams he expects answers though, and yes there are right and wrong answers. Overall not bad, not great. If you show up to class and do the assignments the 50 participation points are a slam dunk
I am a Bio Med Major so obviously this class was important and I felt as if I did not learn anything throughout the semester. He was very confusing and his accent made lectures nearly unbearable. He also moved very, VERY slow through the topics leaving only enough time for a brief intro of seemingly important topics. Take with a different prof.
Rambles on about random stuff every lecture. Didnt remember anything. He is a smart guy but not a very effective professor. Also not a fair grader. Be prepared for surprises as the blackboard grade may not equal your final grade.
Study guides are exactly what the tests are. Straight forward on what you need to know. Be carefull around the photosynthesis part of class, cuz it gets really hard. Awesome professor
My section was very behind, leaving little time for some topics. Got off on tangets in class, taking two or three lectures to get through a couple pages of notes, and then still wasn't clear. Great guy though, met him at my orientation, but would not recommend taking him for BIO 120.
Awesome prof! You couldn't ask for a better prof for this particular class. His lectures are always interesting because he's a tiny bit quirky, but always amusing. He's very enthusiastic about biotech. Pretty easy grader. Funny as hell.
Great professor for the class. Class size was small and personal. Classes were part lecture part lab and covered everything you would want to know as an intro to biotech. Alex has experience with cutting edge techniques and knows about a wide range of topics. One of my favorite classes taken so far in my three years here. Learn alot but fairly easy
this class is tough no matter who you take but nikitin isnt a very good teacher. lectures are boring and accent is tought to understand. quizzes and tests are challenging no study guides. a lot of studying on ur own and work to get a decent grade
Professor Nikitin is the worst professor ever. He treats you like an idiot when you ask questions and acts like you are wasting his time when in office hours. AVOID at all costs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class was interesting for the most part and Alexey knows what he is talking about. He always listened to what others had to say and never shot anyone down. Easy grader for the most part-everything came straight from his slides. Just put in the effort & you'll get an A. His accent is NOT hard to understand - thats a total lie!
He seemed to not care about his students failing the course and mumbled during lecture. Avoid taking this course with him.
Very interesting class because he has worked as a geneticist for years, test questions taken directly from notes, very easy exams, his accent is easy to understand, and class requirements are clearly laid out. He is funny, but likes to go off on tangents that sound very complicated, luckily that info is NOT on the exams. Rarely use book.
If you do not understand sometings speak up. He will go over it again if he has to. His acsent is not that bad. I had him right after he came back for europe and still understod him fine. He knows that he has an acsent and if you need help he will. Great guy. Very smart and knows how to dumb down if needed.
This guy knows his stuff! He has had experience in many different fields and knows a lot of things. He sometimes goes off on tangents and mumbles, but what he has to say is interesting. Tests aren't too bad if you show up for class! I enjoyed taking his class.
Not very good
Awful. I did not learn one thing all semester. He seems like a nice guy but is not clear at all. He mumbles, and doesn't explain anything sensibly. No one sitting towards the back for the lecture hall can hear him, or see his notes on the screen. Waste of money.
I emailed him asking what I could do to get my grade up, and he never responded. Didn't learn from this class at all.
Most people who take the class are less than intelligent and get frustrated with him, but if you can pay attention he's actually a really smart teacher and has a lot of jokes I don't even think he knows he makes
Don't get me wrong, the guy knows his stuff. He is extreamly smart and wants to tell you everything that he knows, but understanding what he is trying to get through to you is REALLY difficult. I attended every single leture, and till had to teach myself the material.
Clearly you people have not watched enough 80s movies to understand a good Russian accent, because I could hear him perfectly and it all made sense to me. A refreshingly easy class.
Ugh please dont take this teacher. he went to russia for like 6 years and still has a HUGE accent. I love Bio and he made me struggle like i never have before... i have to re-take the class next year because of the poor choice to take his class. He knows his stuff but he doesnt know how to teach it. he just tells you.
BIO 120 is a tough class, but he does a pretty good job of dumbing it down. The lectures are boring and often irrelevant, but his tests are easy enough to make up for it. If you skim the book and read his notes, its an easy A.
Overall a good prof though sometimes unclear when he'd go off on rants. He really knows the material from experience. Tests seemed to get more difficult as the semester went on. If you put in the effort you should do fine.
A good prof for ethics! His lectures aren't thrilling, but he is a pretty lenient grader when it comes to papers and other assignments. The midterm was a little tough but the final was easy.
I think Nikitin is an intelligent man, but I found him not very helpful and his quizzes and exams harder then they should have been. Believe me I put in plenty of study and review time and asked for clarity. But I still just got a B. His accent is not that bad, mumbles a bit though, but will clarify when needed.
DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS PROF FOR A 6-9 !!! he's very intelligent but refuses to go over basic concepts even though many people have taken bio 120 years ago. quizzes are more challenging than they should (read: fill in the blank) and you never really know what he's going to ask on the exams. don't buy the book; uses his own coursepack online.
Mr.Nikkitin...mumbles like a madman, but is a nice guy and will go over anything you want after class and is patient about it...quizzes are cake...tests ehhh..decent ( i dont study much)..watch his wording on tests, but overall straight forward
Seems to care much more about his research than his students. Gives vague responses to emails. Interesting stories but he made this course difficult with his picky grading and unclear questions.
I took this class as SWS so as expected there's a lot of writing. He made us think and stimulated a lot of class discussion but I felt I learned the matterial well. If you come to class & participate, and don't procrastinate you will do fine! Some HW he gives you answers for coming. His accent can be tricky but once you get used to it he's great.
Prof Nikitin was not bad at all for how hard people made BIO 120 sound. His lectures were a bit dry and sometimes hard to understand and follow. I did alot of youtube videos and did well! know the study guides for tests and you will be prepared. If you're willing to work outside of class, I would recommend him
Gives you book to print out so that's neat. Not good at answering questions. had him for a 6-9 in both classes and I wouldn't advice it. He drags on and talks a lot about nothing. I only took notes fora bout 40% of the things he said b/c he goes off on tangents of nothingness. He makes the classes easy, does 'busy work' but easy stuff.
Very nice and funny. Exams didn't really follow lecture but if you study it's not impossible.
Nikitin is brilliant... but uninteresting at this level of bio. I'm sure he'd be willing to help if you needed it, but the hour and 15 minute lecture was impossibly dull. He can spend 40 minutes on one slide. But, notes are online and he never gives pop quizzes so I just didn't go to lecture and taught myself. It's just quizzes and exams.
It was always hard to understand him with his accent. The powerpoints are helpful and follow the book, but he does not answer any questions when you ask him. His tests were somewhat easy if you studied and he always had quizzes, some where surprises. No other work or extra credit. I wouldn't take him again.
Professor Nikitin is excellent for Genetics. While the lectures can be occasionally dull, Nikitin is incredible clear on what will show up on exams. He provides study guides, reviews quizzes immediately after students have turned them in as well as provides numerous paper assignments designed to buffer out your grade. Would take again.
He is such a genuine and nice person! He is very flexible and willing to consider others ideas. Great professor! Take him if you want to learn and have a laugh along the way.
He just mumbles and sounds half asleep the entire time that plus his accent is so hard to understand. The textbook is written by him and is poorly worded and laid out. Every assignment has been online and the exams are worded strangely. This is the only class I have struggled in and I am a third year biomed student.
This guy is a joke. Every exam and quiz was online and most of the questions could be pasted into google and found on quizlet. Easiest A I have gotten in my life but I did not learn anything.
Hard to understand him with his accent. Be prepared to do an TON of writing. Had to put more effort into this class than a lot of other classes which shouldn't happen since its only 3 credits. Try to take with a different professor wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemies.
He is hard to understand with his accent and his tests are tough. He doesn't explain things and expects you to know stuff he doesn't talk about in class. Nice part is, he provides the text book.
I really enjoyed having professor Nikitin. Genetics is a hard class, but he repeats a lot of the material so you hear it multiple times. His accent is not hard to understand. We have two exams online and two in person, so don't plan on having them all online. The exams are difficult, but he is specific in what you need to study.
Literally this class was hell for me. Nikitin is a great guy but he mumbles a lot and his accent is hard to understand. Tests are worded really weird. He gives a clear outline of what will be tested but it's hard to get notes on the material due to the accent. Wrote like 5 250 word papers, I legit copy and pasted the article. He doesn't read them.
Professor Nikitin is very intelligent. He doesn't really dumb things down enough sometimes. His accent doesn't get in the way at all, but he tends to mumble and/or talk quietly. But, he is pretty clear what to expect on tests and quizzes. He gives study guides for both. Had a mixture of online and in-class tests/quizzes.
Prof Nikitin knows what he's talking about, but if you are anything but an auditory learner, be ready to teach yourself this material. He talks......a lot. Most lectures don't even get through a few Powerpoint slides. He is very knowledgeable & can explain almost anything to you, but be ready to listen
If you want a solid A without much effort he's your man. Exams and quizzes are all online except the final. Assignments aren't due until the end of the semester. Really don't need to go to class. If you want to actually understand genetics I'd look elsewhere
Professor Nikitin really knows the material. He even wrote his own book on the material which he provides so you can print it out for the class. Definitely, study for the tests and go through the material. He is patient, caring, and cares about his students.
Alot of the people on here are over exaggerating him. Yes he has an accent but he's not hard to understand. He does ramble on about stuff but he's enjoyable to listen to and cares about your opinion. This was an SWS class so it had alot of writing but was not hard to get done. Pretty easy A as long as you put forth the effort.
His accent wasn't hard to understand at all; he just mumbled a lot. All of his tests are online and you're not required to take them in class. The final is multiple choice, in class, so it's different than the rest. The reason why I struggled was because his lectures are discussion based and I am not an auditory learner.
He produces his own textbook and gives it to you for free which is great. Everything you need to know is in there, lectures are just copied and pasted sections out of the course pack. He knows his stuff and makes lecture interesting, trying to apply it to everyday life and has a sense of humor. Exams are online and final is easy in class.
The lectures were rough. He doesnt teach as much as he just talks.
Quizzes/Tests are timed and online. You can find SOME of the answers on online. Sometimes the questions were worded weird. Tests/Quizzes are worth a lot. Still, I felt like I didn't learn anything in his class. I recommend to take someone else if you actually want to learn Human Genetics.
His exams are no longer online!!! However, his exams are a joke! They're very easy! The quizzes were online and they were slightly more difficult than the exams. His lectures are boring and mostly a review of bio 120. You don't need to go to class to pass! If you're looking for an easy A take Nikitin, however be prepared to learn almost nothing!
Not a good professor, all he does is ramble and ramble about stuff that we all don't care about. He's a nice guy, don't get me wrong. Also, his tests are worded weird and have info that wasn't covered well in class. I also don't appreciate that tests are worth so much while all the homework we had to do and papers were worth so little.
You literally do not need to show up to this class. Everything that you need to know is provided in the textbook that he created himself. His powerpoints are always super scattered and never match up with the lecture, so just follow along with his book (if you even go to class). Tests aren't too difficult, just study the book.
This was my favorite class this semester! 1/3 quizzes and all 4 exams were in person. I don't understand why other students didn't always attend class, I found class extremely interesting. He gave clear demonstrations of how students performed on his exams (bell curve data) and I felt he graded very fair. He's smart and cares about his students.
Professor Nikitin is very knowledgeable, but his lectures feel very long and dull. He is not the most passionate, but his grading is not very hard, although there is a paper due just about every week. Overall, not the best but not the worst. He is willing to work with students, which shows he cares.
His lectures are so dull and make no sense. You can't follow what he is saying. His exams are ridiculous; they are so specific. He makes his own textbook which barely has any detail in it. Lecture slides are all over the place and make no sense.
So I wouldn't trust any reviews because it seems like he changes his exam method & teaching method every semester. Online in the summer probably won't be bad because you can look up answers. Exams this semester were ridiculously specific and meant to trick you rather than test material. Final was cumulative and on paper. I learned nothing.
Dr. Nikitin has a dry sense of humor and was one of the most comical professors I've ever had. His lectures were enjoyable and he keeps the class engaged. He lectures as though you're having a conversation rather than just spewing information. He was fair in the amount of content and heavy on homework, but at least he graded nicely.
I took this as an in-class with the lecture but he treats it like an online class. Everything is done online. There are weekly quizzes but it's through the textbook and he gives you a quiz review beforehand so if you study that you'll be fine. Most people don't show up for class and take the quizzes at home.
His lectures were very dull and hard to follow, he tends to ramble a lot and I could never follow. On the first day I remember everyone seemed so eager to listen and the lecture went NO WHERE. By the end of the semester no one barely showed up and everything you can do is online anyway. It could have been a hybrid or online class very easily.
He is very hard to understand and does not always lecture on relevant topics. I did not learn really anything in this class. Most of the learning is online and attendance is not mandatory .
This class should have been online. The lectures would usually go off topic. There was a quiz almost every week, a few papers, a decent amount of homework, and a final exam. However, non of it was difficult. He gives review guides for quizzes and the final and they are almost identical to the exam.
When the semester went online, Nikitin was more than understanding towards his students, and shifted to an online class structure flawlessly. Although his class was an easy A, if you are looking to actually go into genetics as a career, take a different prof. His class was very simple, but I could not tell you a single genetic concept.
Three Exams (50 pts each), Three Quizzes (20 pts each), Five Homework Writing Assignments (10 pts each, 500 words each), One Final Exam (100 pts). He's a good professor, very fair in grading, and accessible whenever. Quizzes are a bit tricky, but Exams go off of his study guides. Very knowledgeable in his field, but goes off-topic regularly.
This professor was not helpful at all with his teaching. He had slides that gave good information, but he ranted on about irrelevant stuff. He was very boring to listen to and it was hard to learn when you have to teach yourself all of the material. There were a lot of papers that needed a lot of reading to write.
He is so unhelpful and makes everything so unclear. Do not take him. Just save yourself the frustration and do not take him for anything.
This was the easiest A of my life. This course was online this semester. Let me tell you, 35% of your grade is just reading the book. The quizzes are super easy. He does do written assignments, but they are a breeze if you do what is required. TAKE HIM. You will not regret it. Complete the quiz reviews - they are incredibly helpful!!!
TAKE HIM. This was the easiest A of my life! Reading the book is a major of your grade and the quizzes are incredibly easy. This was online, but I am telling take him if you can!!!
Great feedback and very laid back. Take him!
This capstone class wasn't a good experience. This class is basically an advanced evolutionary biology class and is pretty homework-heavy. There are 1-2 reading assignments every week that each require a 500-word summary and a 5-10 minute video summary. He is a lenient grader, but it all feels like busywork. Other capstone sections seem better.
The class alone if kind of a pain in the butt but hes fantastic! Super easy grader, really laid back about things, and made this class super easy! It was just a bunch of summaries and a few presentations but nothing to crazy!
The smart book activities he has us do is too much. There are normally 2 you have to do each week and they take hours to do. The writing assignments are pointless bc the articles are irrelevant to what were learning about and he doesnt even read them. Its an easy class but the work load is too much
If you take genetics, take it online with Nikitin. The homework and quizzes were intimidating at first, but I passed the class with ease due to how they are set up. TBH didn't retain much of what I learned. Some of the reading assignments were interesting, but lots of reading. Prepare to set aside a decent amount of time for working on homework
Good professor. Laid back, willing to work with you if necessary. Relevant content.
The workload is manageable most weeks; however, the information did not always seem relevant. The prof was not flexible when it came to opening assignments and there were multiple assignment that opened and closed on a Sunday. When asked if they could be moved during the week he said no and it took a week for him to reply.
I enjoyed the class, just writing papers and two group projects. Pretty easy if you like to write.
Unresponsive to emails, inflexible on due dates, with many assignments opening and closing on the same day. Assignments are irrelevant to the topics at hand and he barely skims them. It's all busy work and anybody who says this prof is good probably just googled every question. Save yourself the time and take a different prof.
