Some of the concepts in the class might be difficult, but Alex DEFINITELY deserves a 5 for helpfullness and clarity. He goes above and beyond what is required and portrayed by the average professor. He is MORE than willing to help with not only his classes but others in which he has knowledge as well. The best professor I've had in my 4 yrs here

He is a very funny and friendly teacher, but has times where he gets mad at the students either for not participating or making stupid mistakes on exams. He makes corny jokes that keep the class interesting, and provides worksheets which contain example that are exactly like test questions. He also gives extra credit and is a very lenient grader.

Gets mad at students for not coming to class and for not putting in enough effort. Its kinda like high school. Pretty easy class, more work than I wanted STAT 100 to be, but its very possible to do well. Very doable, but a bit unpleasant. Take Fireman if you can.

Alex is the man!!! I came into this class not understanding statistics at all, and now I totally get it. Plus he's a raving lunatic from Siberia. About the only problem is that occasionally he gets too caught-up in imaginary emotional drama with the class and forgets to teach for a few minutes. Exams are not hard at all provided you did the hw.

He's a very good lecturer. Willing to help outside class. Discussion needn't attend. Many TAs office hrs. Exams are not that hard if study the study materials he posted. Definitely a taker!

Doesn't talk very loud, so sit in the front of the room if you want to hear what he is saying.

Professor Stepanov is an awesome professor. Though he's not always 100% clear in his lectures, he'll stay with you at his office hours till you understand the material. The exams aren't too bad, just study the examples and old homework problems. The book's pretty useless though.

Good, not great. He was funny, direct, and had reasonable exams. But he imposes poor effort of the few onto the masses as if everyone is as smart as he is.

He really cares about the students, which is a nice change from other classes of this size. He expects a lot but not excessive amounts. You will have several hours of homework but since it is preparing you for an actuarial exam it's not excessive either. Ask questions he'll answer them well. In the end you get out what you put in..I'd recommend him

Textbook is useless but only because Alex is the best professor I've had on campus. He really cares about the students and has an amazing sense of humor. I loved having class with Alex. I did well in this class only because I went to office hours- he was extremely helpful and made sure you understood the material. This is the second time I took his class. He is by far one of the best teachers on campus I've met. The test is easy. He gave out extra credits for this summer class. The homeworks are relatively hard, so as long as you understand what you are doing in the homeworks, you'll do great on the exams.

Alex worked hard on his lectures and was always prepared. He's also a really smart guy despite how he says he's dumb... He can be really moody, but he can also be pretty funny. Very quirky professor. Stepanov is the man. Everything is posted online to review. The homework is tough but prepares you for the milder exams. This was one of the best classes I've taken at U of I, incredibly organized for a 400 math class where teachers can tend to be all over the place. He keeps lecture interesting, very funny guy.

Greatest professor ever, his lecture slides are all available on the compass with solutions. Homework are nearly the same as the questions on the slides, so do the exams. Go to lectures and go over the slides. A in hand.

Fantastic professor. Exams are taken right from in-class examples, and are easy as long as you make good use of your note sheets (put example problems on them and you're golden). Stepanov made STAT 400 easier than STAT 200. Take his class whenever possible.

Homework is very difficult but once you get over it, exam is just a piece of cake.You'll be very grateful for having Alex as your instructor especially when you are sitting for exam P. Excellent lecturer! By attending STATS 400 you feel more like in the comedy club. He likes picking on students, so do not leave in the middle of the lecture. Likes participation. No curve, homework is once every 2 weeks and is hard. Quizes are a joke. Exams are easier than HW. Highly recommended!

Alex is my favorite professor so far! It was great to take STAT 400 with him during the summer, and I will definitely take his class again if I can get in. He has a sense of humor, and is very helpful and friendly to students. He can get very scary if you cheated on homework/exams (eg. if you copy other student's homework...) so don't do that!

Stepanov is great. All around. Best Act-Sci teacher her considered Gorvett and PJ are gone. He's the only hope this program has. Take him, actually DO the homework. You'll find answers online, and you will do poorly on tests. Just suck it up, get a group together, order pizza, and do the hw... it'll make the tests super simple. GREAT GUY.

Personally my favorite professor in UIUC. His lectures and notes are extremely structured and detailed, from intuition to "silly" examples to more complicated ones. Best teacher I've ever had. As long as you do not cheat or take advantage of him like MATH 408 did then you should have no problems with him. Very helpful especially during office hours and is very good at teaching the material. Does a great job of not making the class boring with all his stories and jokes, although not always funny, appreciated.

He gets a little aggravated if you ask him silly questions, answers to which you should have already known but he would still help you. He has mean and strict attitude but he really cares about you. Lectures are presented clearly and concisely. Exams are straightforward as long as you've completed and understood all assigned homeworks. Though the first exam is considerably easier than the remaining two. Make sure to brush up on your calculus, particularly double integrals, or you might find yourself lost midway through the course.

Don't let Alex scare you into dropping the class, he'll push that hard for the first 2 weeks. You'll get used to his personality and it will keep you from being bored out of your mind during class. Hwk and final are very reasonable . Midterms were hard and had problems with obscure tricks. Don't ask obvious questions, he will mock you if you do.

Taking a class with him is like going on a roller coaster ride. You don't know what to expect in the next classes and how he's going to react to his student. Highly recommended. His notes are textbook. You don't need to spend money on books. I liked his lectures in general, but he doesn't have microphones and I just couldn't hear him well (maybe it was just the problem with the room). I've taken both 400 and 410 with him and Idk why but his personality seemed different in stat 400 and 410.

Although Alex keeps saying what a horrible person he is, he is a REALLY GREAT professor. I feel he was born funny and his lectures are never boring, full of jokes and memes. I just finished taking STAT 400 over the summer. You will absolutely love his enthusiasm, entertaining jokes, and clear presentation of the material. He is easily the best professor I've ever had.

I personally like his lectures for STAT 400/410 but not that much for STAT 420. I liked the class, he is still a great lecturer, it's just a matter of efficiency. I just feel like homework that uses a lot of R should be submitted online. It's much more easy to read then printing them out.

He is undoubtedly one of the best Stats teachers I have ever met. He teaches everything with such ease which makes difficult topics much easier than they are. He is really funny and he makes sure that everyone gets what he is trying to explain.

Once you get through the storm of asking a question... if you can... hes probably the best professor and is really fun to get to know. Take him don't listen to what scary things other people say... they probably asked a stupid question and you don't do that in his class. You just don't. Not if you want to live. There are many good teachers in the stats department, and Stepanov is certainly one of them. He is very knowledgeable in his teaching and his method of teaching is great. He cares and he has a personality, honestly, what can you ask more from a prof?

Materials are presented clearly. More than sufficient materials are provided. No exam problem was trickier than what was presented in lectures or homework. Fair grading. Tip: refine your questions and show some effort spent when you ask for help. Learning without hand-holding, but with gritty humor. Just how college education should be.

Feel I didn't do well in the final, but overall the homework questions are not difficult. Every time I asked questions after class, he answered very clearly and politely. Maybe not everyone likes his sense of humor, but honestly going to his class for jokes and puns especially about politics is one of the few things that made me happy this summer

Since I'm not a STAT major, I'm hesitant to take STAT 410 because I've heard the course is challenging. Nevertheless, Alex illustrated those concepts and theorems clearly, and his lectures are well-prepared and well-organized. There is no doubt that he is a cornerstone and he cares about his students. I'm not sure why people are commenting about the final exam being difficult. Alex made it absurdly doable and easy if you put in the work to study. He may not be the most friendly professor in the stats department, but he's certainly reasonable.

Alex devotes much time to the class (very detailed class materials on canvas, 3 OH time slots throughout the week). He's NOT a terrible human being who knows nothing about respect and love. The course is also very well designed. The materials taught in class are tough, but the exams only test you on the basics.

Although he claims himself as "a terrible human being knowing nothing about respect and love" and is annoyed when others ask him questions such as syllabus, Canvas, or TI nSpire, he still creates a fantastic learning atmosphere. I still love taking his class. Just don't mind his temper too much.

I mean, it's a great class, really. Just look at the numerous positive reviews if you don't believe me. Many have criticized the class for not having enough proofs on the exams and that the political jokes are getting too real, which I agree with.

Gave insightful commentary on why we should care about what we learn in his class. He opened a new dimension of statistics that other instructors may have failed to achieve. He is scary (discord!) and really fast, but his class is extremely fair and it's obvious he wants students to succeed (despite what he says in class). Is also on Piazza a lot.

Please don't say mean stuff about Prof. Stepanov, he is NOT a terrible person but a professor with tender and kind feelings! He is indeed trying to create a wonderful learning atmosphere. I still remember the day when he was holding a pile of exams but still trying to hold a door for me. Please don't say hurtful words : ）

STAT410 is prone to small mistakes. Taking an exam in a crowded hall without desks or scratch paper is no easy task. Minor errors can lead to significant point deductions. Fortunately, Alex granted us 20 points of extra credit, providing a margin for error. Frankly speaking, if this policy continues, students shouldn't complain about this course.

Back to week 1 when we are still friends, then he collectively wants to scare warming fuzzy feeling students with toxic actions. Clearly he is a man who knows nothing about respect and love, and he wants students to have pain and suffering in STAT 410. But, do not tell LAS administration about this or call president Trump, yet.

His lectures were interesting and engaging (much better than watching pre-recorded videos imo). Also, his sarcasm/remarks in class used to be something to look forward to. His office hours were very helpful for the homework and he's a lot more nicer in person than how he might appear in class.

A good lecturer and an understanding professor. Practicing many problems on Canvas will help you learn the material. Formula sheets were allowed, which was helpful. Very entertaining lecturer and very nice regardless of the in-class antics. If he is intimidating, talk to him outside of class. I am sad I will not take any other courses from him.

Amazing class. Content is clear and thoroughly organized. Lectures are fast paced but highly informative. Office hours are extremely helpful and under-utilized. Expect tough but fair exams, and lots of time spent doing practice problems. Great professor, but could ease a bit off students making minor errors at times.

Alex is a great professor to take STAT 410 with - he explains concepts in a very intuitive way that is often missing in textbooks. If you understand the homeworks, do the extra practice problems, go to class and go to office hours you'll be fine for the exams.

410 with Alex will be one of the best courses you take at UIUC. He is an incredibly funny and brilliant professor who knows how to such a theoretical subject and bring it to the masses. Homework and tests are brutal (and violate Geneva Convention), but it is worth it in the end. It is a rite of passage to take 410 with him.

Stepanov is great, his lectures are never boring. He truly cares about ensuring students understand the content. The exams were very fair, just do hella practice problems and you'll be fine. Overall a wonderful professor, I'll miss his corny ahh jokes.

For such a challenging course, Professor Stepanov explains the topics really well, but at a fast pace in class. Many resources are available to ensure mastery of each skill for exams and homework's. Go to office hours early on if stuck!

The class is difficult, and lectures are necessary to understand the material. Alex can seem mean, but he's (almost) always joking, and actually cares a lot about his students (especially if he notices people going to lecture and office hours). Office hours are EXTREMELY helpful! Go even if you don't have questions, just to do the homework.
