She was succinct, and was very clear about her expectations, (like exactly what to know for tests). She wasn't one of those over-available professors, but knew what she was talking about and provided excellent supplements such as stories and examples.
She is the best professor i have! She is very clear in what she wants from the class such as participation and exams. Doesn't overload students with too much work.
she is a good professor and mad cool but her lectures are boring. if u don't want to work hard then i suggest u do not take her class! good luck!
do not take this class...you have been warned
ADDS 10 POINTS TO FINAL GRADE if you go to all lectures!!! no homework other than reading in the book, she's kind of boring, but she knows what shes talking about. Uses intresting examples...foucuses on drugs alot!!
Shes a great teacher, really cool. But you must work hard if you want an A in this class. She makes psychology iunteresting with examples and class participation. And thers a lot of extra credit points in this class!! Really fun teacher..really smart too!
she does have a lot of extra credit work. which helps alot. Her tests are pretty crazy. This class requires a lot of work. Not an easy A.
i failed the first test badly and improved on each of the following ones, but my average was a D+. i asked her if i could do extra credit labs (like the rest of the professors allow) and she refused, saying she only gives extra credit to honor students. don't take her unless you absolutely have to.
The class is a little hard, but if you even read the textbook for one exam you'll get an A on it. Apparently the curve must be pretty big too because everyone i talked to got an A that even remotely cared, including myself.
Very nice teacher...Is a little tough on the grading, but if you see her she is more than willing to help you.
exams are right from the book, good reviews. powerpoints are awful, lectures are boring. easy A if you dont mind reading
GO TO CLASS...IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST IF U WANT A LETTER GRADE HIGHER
Classes are extremely boring. you don't need to go to class as long as you read the textbook. sometimes she posts work online. overall, I don't like her
Really helpful if you see her during her office hours. Tests aren't that bad if you read the book. Must attend lectures to get the extra credit which helps a lot, gets you a letter grade higher. In general, this class requires a lot of work and she seems harder than other intro. psy professors, but she does train you for higher level psy courses
she is one of those professors that is close minded and thinks psychology is the basis of the universe and her course is god... exams are fairly difficult, you need to buy the textbook it helps, so much extra junk on ublearns which is complicated, overall i dont recommend her unless you want to do a lot of work and note taking
she was fun to listen to, she tries to get the class involved but no one really wants to respond so its kind of funny...her studies center on drug psychology so if that's your thing, its a really enlightening class
tests are danm hard
tests are pretty hard, 2 tests, 1 final. we have no homework. one midterm assignment. and coglabs and experiements to do. she's very helpful, but the class is boring and not that fun. i love psych but she doesn' really teach well especially in a class of 500. u will hear how other other psych teachers are better..it's true..b/c thompson is tough!
Her tests are SO easy. If you even look at her practice exams online, you have a shot at an A. She says her exams are hard, but her practice exams most of the time are the real exams. Do the readings, go to class, and ask for help if you need it. Seriously, if you do what you're supposed to, it's an easy, easy A.
shes not a bad teacher. i thought the exams were kind of easy. just read the book. most people just read the book & dont even go to class & manage to get a B+ or higher.
Class is a waste of time - try to take with a different professor if at all possible. I have never been in a more slow-moving, painfully boring class. Professor is unorganized and unclear with project directions. On the bright side, no tests - just some projects.
Class is boring as hell... just read off the book and you'll pass...
She is very smart, and I think she should stick to upper level courses. If you go to office hours, you'll get nothing out of them, she does not help you at all. Her lectures are very confusing at times. The book is the best bet to do well. I disliked her strongly, and would not recommend her at all. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!! TESTS ARE VERY HARD!!!
Class is extremely boring. She just keeps talking and talking. Doesn't know how to work her powerpoints correctly. Hardly touched the book (a waste of $120), but had to put forth a solid effort in class. Not too hard, only because its a 101 class, and a gen. ed.
Make sure you attend to every one of her lectures and TRY to pay attention. I hardly used to the textbook and I managed to get an A by studying from the notes. I found the online audio really helpful for review. Class is boring, but she tries to make it fun. You can also get extra credit IN CLASS, which is a big boost to your grade!
she is very nice just her class is boring and seems to go on forever. however sometimes she made it fun. her exams are pretty tough
She's a mediocre professor. Fairly boring lectures, though she does try to make them fun with videos, etc. If you do take notes in class, you'll be writing a lot. If not, you can just get the PP slides online. Tests aren't extremely hard, but they're not easy. A lot of the questions on the practice test are on the real exam.
Class from hell teacher from hell there are way eaiser and better PSY teachers out there so pick another, class is not mandatory but then you would have to read the book. The stuff she teaches and claims is important is not on the test and stuff she does not cover is... avoid her if you can, like I said there are many others who are wayy better
Do not sign up for her lecture!
Ugh...I left an earlier rating but I want to change mine. We just had an exam the other day and it was really hard. There were things on the exam that she NEVER mentioned in class. If I knew she was this hard in the beginning of the semester, I would have dropped her class and tried to get into a different section.
she sucks and likes to listen to herself talk , her last test had questions that had nothing to do with info. in the book or in class. The tests are on way too many chapters at once, i couldnt stay through a whole lecture because she made me want to scream and never ended early, her notes are redic. and she goes too fast.
avoid her if you can
Professor Thompson is a great professor. She is very clear and you can tell she is interested in what she lectures and enjoys teaching. If you study and try you will do just fine. Those who give bad reviews from psy 101 obviously are not interested at all in psych, but if you are a psych major I would definitely recommend taking a class with her.
Have her for Substance Use and Abuse. She was fantastic. Very clear lectures.
Dr. Thompson is clearly an expert in her field, but when it comes to teaching (and especially organizing) a course, she's really chaotic. She didn't get all the way through the syllabus, didn't explain the projects very well, and made us buy Top Hat response ware but then barely used it. She's okay, but take 450 with someone else if you can.
I took her class because the other 400s were full. Best thing ever. She was funny, SUPER nice, and really knowledgeable. Plus, how well you do in this class is pretty much based on how much effort you put in. Ie, study hard for it and listen to her lectures, AND YOU WILL GET YOUR A. Absolutely love her class!!!
Dr. Thompson is really funny in a sweet old person kind of way. The class wasn't extremely difficult you just have to stay on top of studying. She wasn't very clear with assignments and presentations were usually cut short because she rambles. It's a 400 level class so expect to discuss and think in depth about the material.
I would avoid this Lecture with her, she talked about irrelevant stuff and tested on stuff she never talked about. Easily distracted and really unclear about what's going on. She told the class that Columbus came to America in 1942 and Denver was a state and didn't catch on until like the 3rd time she said it.
Really boring professor. Rambles on about difficult concepts then tests on concepts that were hardly mentioned or not even mentioned at all. Class average was a 66 on one test and she didn't curve. I would avoid.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She makes you purchase MindTap and TopHat and barely posts Top Hat questions. She posts empty slides online so if you don't go to class you're pretty much screwed. She doesn't post practice tests and grades material in an untimely fashion. Would not recommend to anyone, find another lecturer.
Tests are fair and gives ample extra credit opportunities. Must read textbook for a better in-depth understanding. Online lecture slides are different from in-class lecture slides. HW and class participation are 25% of your grade and she takes your top 3 exam scores, each 25% of your grade.
This class absolutely sucked. I will never take from this professor again. Her lectures did not contain anything that was on the exams. Her lectures were all about research she was interested in. I recommend to just read the online book and do the reviews in there and not even go to class. Also everything you do online is graded...
Provides a test question bank that questions for the test will be directly pulled from, but these are posted like the week before the exam. Lectures are long, were very science-heavy, and all over the place, but she was very willing to go over difficult topics. Showed up late to the final. Took a while to grade things. Only 2 tests & 1 paper.
writing to help future students in 121. class isn't incredibly hard. read the textbook, watch online lectures, attend class. study your notes. tests r straightforward, mostly memorization, no trick q's. The group projects count & the notes she lectures on are important. Q's many ppl get wrong on tests she will omit. Barrick's voice made me to sleep
If you have the option of not taking her, please take it. She gives weekly quizzes online (very easy to look up the answers), there are also videos and readings with questions with every chapter that she makes all due by the end of the semester (do not save it all for the last week because it is A LOT). Her tests are extremely hard and impossible.
Dr. Thompson is really passionate about the material. I thought the class was great, the material was REALLY INTERESTING, and I enjoyed the experience. Its a freshman class so lots of crosstalk between students which she does not go for. The students constantly talking was the most annoying part. Lots of reading, but great material.
They did surgery on a grape.
Class attendence is not mandatory but go bc the slides she gives online are missing notes she gives out during lectures and will ask top hat questions once in awhile. Mastery training was useless, memorizing the slides and the chapter quizzes helped improve my grades. Extra credit helped but 60% of the exam is based off slides.
If I could go back and change one thing in my life, it wouldn't be to tell my dying grandpa that I loved him, but to take this class with someone else. WORST professor Ive ever had. Its finals week and we haven't gotten anything back since the first week of school, doesn't go to her own office hours or answer emails. Idk if im failing or have and A
This professor is probably among one of the most unreliable with regards to getting your grades back on time. Piggy-backing off of the review proceeding this, Dr. Thompson, despite promising the students that she would get the grades out on time for us to decide if we need to take the final, has not put out grades since April. We're in final's week
I can tell that Professor Thompson cares a lot about what she does and is clearly a very smart woman. She makes it easy to amend project grades and is very helpful when it comes to understanding directions better but you will never see your grades on anything lol its been almost a month since class ended and still no final grades.
studied throughly for the test and yet still didnt perform too well. Test questions are worded horribly and lectures turn into ramblings. Feels more like an anatomy class since the first test was basically on the brain
Teacher that is willing to help, but I feel she over complicates subjects that do not need to be over complicated. Her wording is hard to understand. Exams use respondus lockdown browser, and you must have your cell phone for random check-ins or you will automatically fail. I am a straight-A student and received a 67 on my first exam.
Dr.T is enthusiastic about research and is very knowledgeable as well. She makes the class interesting and gives lots of insight into what research really is. This class isn't meant to be easy, it's a 400 level, but she gives lots of assistance and help to increase your grade if needed. She truly cares for the students and wants them to do well.
I really enjoyed the flexibility with this class. Sometimes it was confusing to figure out what was due when (soft dates vs. hard dates) but having a choice over which assignments you wanted to complete was refreshing. It's a heavy workload and a tough course but there are so many extra credit chances and Dr. Thompson is responsive and helpful.
Prof. Thompson seems like a nice enough person to chat with, as long as youre not in the classroom setting. Most of class time is not spent going over material for the course but rather her going off on barely related tangents. Assignments are vague and dont have good instructions, but any quizzes in class are for a participation grade only.
Dr Thompson makes the course so much harder and more EXPENSIVE (tophat + mindtap 200) than it needs to be. The concepts aren't hard to understand, but the way she teaches it is so all over the place, unclear, and lacks structure. Her slides don't get straight to the point and are not always comprehensive. Also so many due dates to keep up with it
Save yourself and do not take the class with Thompson. She only lectured for the first two weeks of class and the rest of it was group presentations and individual presentations that you are tested on eventually. She takes over 2 months to grade assignments and when you reach out to her for support there is a 25% chance she responds. Do not take!
This is by far the most disorganized professor I've ever had. Her lectures are a bit disorganized too, jumping from topic to topic, telling stories here and there. She's nice outside of class and truly does care, but avoid her classes if you are a student who needs some order in the class structure.
DO NOT take this class! Unless you are ready to work your ass off. Also, the kritik assignment is really confusing. It's about 15% of your final grade. Can't believe that the evaluation part takes hight percentage than the creation part. Is this a ta training course or what?
Professor Thompson is a really nice woman overall to chat with. With that being said, she is an awful online professor. She didnt post lectures every week, even when was to be expected. She also didnt post homework projects we were supposed to have weeks to do until the last minute. She is hard to reach by email and disorganized in lectures.
This professor assigned a project at the beginning of the semester that's due 11/29/2020, so in three days, but she didn't provide us with the actual project until two weeks late (she was supposed to post it on 11/9 but she just posted it like two days ago. She also hasn't posted the video to do the project. That's all you need to know about her.
Thompson has not been able to upload lectures on time, which you would assume would be expected from a professor, the homework projects as well are uploaded last minute and expected to be completed on time. This class is unfathomably difficult and it would have been easier if the professor was reliable, try to avoid taking this class with her.
Do not take this class. Prof Thompson has an unclear syllabus and does not post any quiz or lecture quiz grades so you will never know your average. She doesnt answer emails and her tests are not based on what she teaches. By far the worst class I have ever taken. So disorganized and confusing. Seriously 0/10 I do not recommend this course.
She wanted no cheating so required us to be in a Zoom meeting WHILE USING Lockdown browser with the entire class during exams, AND made the password to get in "methamphetamine." For exam #2 she put us in groups of 4 on Zoom with a virtual proctor to watch us... Only time I've ever dropped a course, a waste of my money and time. Beyond unbelievable.
Never take this class ever! Projects are EXTREMELY wordy and SUPER unclear. She also never answers her emails. I literally have to teach myself everything. 0/10 would not recommend. this is worse than psych stats if that's even possible. The final exam and midterm are 50% of your final grade which is terrible for a professor who does not teach.
Teaches with two brain cells, procrastinates everything- posting lectures, grading, responding to emails. Leaves everything to the last minute. You won't know your final grade until you print your transcript probably. Weirdly specific expectations for exam answers for someone who doesn't make their own questions. Like is she okay
I enjoyed the class, but the professor often made it a frustrating class. There were so many miscommunications including the time that the code wasn't sent for an online exam so half of the class was required to make it up on their own time. Professor does not answer emails efficiently and grading is done relatively harsh.
I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe she isn't great online professor, but as others have said she struggles getting the material out on time. I wouldn't take her course unless you're ready to devote hours to reading a textbook, and doing projects. She rarely posts her own material, and is quite a harsh grader.
Professor Thompson is a nice lady, but I don't think she should teach this kind of class. She didn't post lectures after the second week. No one in the entire class knew what was going on. No one understood the projects. When I went to office hours for clarification I left more confused. I was optimistic when class started but now I want it to end!
Thompson, she really did nothing after like the first 4 weeks of class but post assignments, and tell us to read the textbook. Projects aren't too bad, if you are in PSY350, do the first 3 projects, do NOT be lazy. She's a harsh grader with her projects, and also doesn't help prepare us well for exams. Everyone in the class is basically confused.
Takes forever to grade, probably wont respond to your emails & isnt as available outside class/office hours as she claims to be. Projects are lengthy and the questions on the assessment for the projects are pretty confusing. She posted her own lectures/notes like 5 times other than that everything came from the textbook.
The worst class I have taken. She literally taught class while driving, never answered emails, and would not post assignments on time or give clear instructions. She made us grade each other's assignments, and you could only give out one A. One week, she posted three, over hour-long lectures on Wednesday when we had an exam on Monday.
Please save the time and take an alternative class. This was a mess, inconsistent and disorganized, also lectures weren't really posted anymore after a few weeks. She makes directions confusing, and Covid would end by the time she replies to emails. Last..(but sheesh) the class average was a C.. that's all you need to know
In sum just an unorganized and unpredictable professor. No point in shooting her an email unless you want to wait about a week to hear back (or just not at all). Would post lectures halfway through the week consistently with no explanation on why it was late. Slow grader and tough grader. If you are taking this class, make sure you study.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A SEMINAR. No clear schedule, all the professor did was talk and go off topic, tedious assignments that take so long, she did not grade ANYTHING till the semester was over and you couldn't even ask her about grades.
I honestly hated this class, and I regret that I didn't drop this class mid-semester. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I SWEAR I'M TRYNA TO HELP YALL. She would go off-topic so many times during class and also never thoroughly reviewed the assigned reading the next day in class.
I took biopsych before taking this class. She has no idea what's going on, very unorganized, yet is very unapproachable. The worst professor I have encountered by far. If you decide to share something in class she usually argues with it somehow even if she does not have knowledge on the subject.
This class was a joke. She never graded anything, and she gave 3 separate assignments plus a final exam in the last 2 weeks of school. She grades ridiculously hard despite never giving feedback on previous assignments. Never take one of her classes if you can help it. I'd give her a zero if I could.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. She is so unorganized, in the first 3 weeks of the semester we were 2 weeks behind already. The later half of the semester is the students teaching each other with 30 minute group presentations followed by 10 minute pair presentations, and yes, this information is what your final will be on. Don't do it!
You will struggle immensely if you have no background in chemistry. Half of this class was students teaching each other through presentations. She did not actively teach the class for about half of the semester and when she did, she would go off topic for half of the class time. This class was badly organized and the exams were very difficult.
I would not recommend taking this course as a seminar. It was not at all what I was expecting and if you have no background knowledge on psychology yet (like me) you are going to be very lost. She did not follow the syllabus at all, and this course requires a lot of reading.
This class was used for my seminar credit but I wish I didn't take it. The professor did not respond to any emails all semester, never posted grades, shows up once a week, very unorganized, forgets to posts assignments, says attendance isn't required when it is, lots of reading. Has a class discussion every week but she never lets the class speak.
Avoid if possible, especially this seminar! Didn't give back a single grade the entire semester and started deleting handed in assignments when she couldn't get grades in on time. Never responded to a single email I sent asking about assignments and grades. Never posted quizzes that she said were assigned and needed to be done for grades.
Professor Thompson is probably a great researcher, but she is not a good professor. She gets off topic for the majority of class, does not return grades, and is all around not passionate about teaching. She also expects you to know everything she mentions in lectures, so if you don't have a pre-existing background in pharmacology, you won't pass.
Dr. Thompson is disorganized and gets off-topic quite frequently. She also does not respond to emails. However, her tests are fair, and if you actually put in the work, you should get a fine grade in this class. The textbook is required. I can't recommend taking her classes, though. She is so disorganized it can turn into chaos very quickly.
cool person, HORRIBLE prof. slides: atrocious & soo disorganized. lectures: nonstop disorganized yapping. clearly a tenured prof, you can tell shes passionate about her research but she makes absolutely no sense since she is so disorganized. never had a prof like this, and prob one of the worst at UB. do yourself a favor and run.
Very disorganized, went off-topic A LOT which left us behind on the lecture. Grades are based only on Tests and Quizzes (these were once or twice a week for each chapter). Lectures were recorded but half the time they forgot to turn on the mic. Hard to follow along in class, easier to follow along by reading the textbook. Some extra credit.
TBH, this is a biopsychology course. Meaning that we are learning and being tested on the biological aspects of phycology. A lot of students had trouble with the course because they have no exposure to biology. Overall the tests were fair (if you studied). Just read the text book and study the material. You'll be fine.
Horrible, would not take again
Terrible, lectures are scattered and incoherent. She never responded to emails.
I struggle with natural science as a psych major. My issue is that our grade is 90% exams. These 30 multiple choice exams encompass 4 chapters leaving limited room for mess ups. She also goes on tangents during lectures leaving you wondering what you need to know versus what's simply commentary. She is nice and approachable but I cannot recommend
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Professor Thompson is an awful lecturer who consistently goes on tangents that do not relate to the course material. Grades are based mostly on exams, 90%, with attendance making up the other 10%. The exams are very difficult even if you study, and the spelling errors on the exams only add to that. Do not recommend.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. This is my first class I've ever failed. She talked about random things, always off topic. 4 exams make up 90% of your grade, her lectures were not helpful what's so ever. Study guides? When we did they were a joke just pages with random questions not even related to the test. She takes zero accountability
Genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever had. I am a science major, so I was lucky I had a better biology background than most, but half the exam was based on material in the textbook she didn't even teach (and 90% of your grade consists of the 4 exams). Stay away if you can. Plus TA was also awful.
This teacher was awful! she was so confusing every lecture. Her slides made no sense and there was absolutely no direction for exams.
90% exam 10% participation, will go off on long tangents about things barely related to class, claims to specify whats important. very nice person and I did like talking to her during office hours, but even then she would get off topic quickly. the tests were very difficult. 4 midterms and 1 final, all weighted the same and lowest gets dropped.
Do not take this professor I promse its the worst decision you can make. Tests are extremely hard no matter how hard you study or even if you think you did well, you will be in for a surprise. Lots of readings needed, big assignments online AND you will need to grade each other (you will be graded on your grading). This should be a 400 level class.
This professor was absolutely terrible and will never take her again. She goes on ranting about random stuff during lectures for way too long. Her slides are disorganized and she does not make any sense on them. Avoid at all cost!!!
This professor is horrible. If you can, take Biopsychology with someone else. Content is already difficult (neuroscience heavy). Professor even more so. Lectures are all over the place and the structure of her slides are awful. In class activities so attend all classes. Exam heavy (4 + Optional Final). You'll learn more from the textbook than her.
She relies on the textbook for her lectures. She can ramble off-topic, leaving us behind schedule she originally posted on the syllabus. The grade is made up of four tests (an optional final that can replace a test grade, 90%) and in-class questions (10%). It was hard, reallllllyyyyy need to study to do well on the tests.
I did well in the course but I had a science major background AND I did basically everything myself. I could not follow her lectures I used the textbook exclusively. You had to be self-motivated to do well and easier with science background. However, I do think the exams tended to be fair if you read the textbook. But she is VERY boring.
better avoid her, she gave so many assignments and requirements to do, i cant believe this is psy 101, it should be 300/400. One thing make me angry is why i still need to spend $30 to purchase kirtik and do the stupid learning pobjects?
This is the worst PSY101 class you could take at UB. An insane amount of work (comparable to busy work from ENG105) on top of 5 exams. I spend more time figuring out what to do for the week from the unclear syllabus than studying for my actual classes. Wait a semester to two to get the “easier” class.
Dr Thompson is a very educated professor in her field of study. However the amount of work for this 101 course is outrages with research projects, biweely class projects and textbook reading and inquiznative assingments. Her lectures drag on way more than they should and we are very behind as we should be past chapter 3 but have an exam next week.
The most horrible professor in my life. The most important thing in this class is to do emotional regulation because you will feel angry and speechless toward her. The review practice exam is level 1 and the real exam will be level 5. She went off topics during lectures and do not expect to learn anything from her lecture. Better to self study!
Very disorganized. Never gets through the content and expects us to know everything. Her slides are terrible.
Worst professor ever! Most things are unclear, she doesn't bother to ask if theres any questions, instead gets annoyed when people unmute their mic. Exams are very heavy on lecture material so make sure you take notes.
Way too much courseload to be an intro course - homework, research participation, and Kritik projects. The professor was always behind schedule. No exam guide or straight outlines for exams. The lecture slides weren't useful, so if you want to do well on exams, you have to read the textbook.
The slides are useless so don't even bother. Professor sporadically responds to email so asking questions is out of the picture. I genuinely hate this class and have not learned a single thing. There are too many assignments and it is very easy to fall behind and feel extremely overwhelmed from just this one class
After exam 1 grade posted, half of the class fail the exam even with the curve. If you can avoid her, please run away. TA are teaching better than her.
She literally will not stop talking. Goes past class time every single time as if we don't all have other classes to get to. Most of the stuff she says is completely unrelated too
Just do it in person, better professors, better grades, less work. If psych is not your major do not take this class as your pathway unless you have a different professor and it's in person, better exams that way.
now that the semester is ending, she decided to cram a ton of information into the lectures where there is so much info in one slide and she moves way too quick when before she just rambled on about irrelevent things which caused us to be behind in the first place. She relies on the textbook and if u dont read ur cooked.
Perhaps the worst professor/teacher I have ever had. This is an introductory course but she gives an immense amount of work. Her slides are awful. Constantly behind schedule. I could go on. DO NOT TAKE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
I wish Dr. T would consider the # of students who do not have a bio background.. all of us are left in the dark. I urge the psych department to make bio a prereq, or for the professors to rely less on tests to determine the final grade, or have clear expectations on what will be tested. Take this over the summer/winter or your gpa will be destroyed
The tests feel almost impossible to do well on. For the most recent test, for example, I took DETAILED class notes (absolutely useless) and detailed textbook notes, and both together were pretty much useless. I don't know how I'm going to study for this final because nothing works, and we are given pretty much no direction or help.
Dr. Thompson's slides and lectures are not helpful for exam preparation. Her slides are often disorganized, and she frequently goes off-topic during lectures. Her exams are excessively difficult, focusing on minor details rather than core concepts. This is one of the hardest classes I've taken. I strongly recommend avoiding this professor.
Dr.T is a dark stain on what is otherwise a great psychology department. Not an effective instructor at all. I feel sorry for anyone forced to have her as a professor.
Might genuinely be the worst class ever taken. Horrible professor. Tests are nothing like the lectures. Lots of unnecessary textbook readings. Inquisitives take forever along with the Norton book. The professor rambles on in class for over 50 minutes. Overall, don't take this class; it's just really bad, and if you do take it, good luck...
She must be a great researcher because she isn't a good instructor. I don't see any other reason why the university would keep her teaching. Very kind lady though.
Literally the exams some of the questions like quite obsure like so random. Alot of the information is through textbook, most of the questions on exam are like from the textbook and not much from the lectures, I don't learn that way. The kritik assignments are just awful as well like the grading of it is just the worst.
Avoid at all costs. As a student doing well in other classes (objectively harder than PSY 101) this class is just stress. I never miss class, take notes, do all projects/readings and study for exams but am still worried for my grade. The exams are hyper-specific, class has felt like waste of time, so stressful for no reason. Other profs way better.
worst professor I have had in college-totally unreasonable and goes on so many tangents. exams are hyperspecific-don't take this class there are so many other wonderful, competent psychology professors at UB
Honestly , Professor Thompson should not be a professor anymore. 90% of our grade was exam based and the exam were very detailed and specific. Her class is very very hard and i could not agree more with the ratings she has.
where do i start Avoid this class if you can. The professor is kind but unhelpful, the lectures are off-topic, slides are messy and confusing, and exams are brutally hard. You're on your own here. Not worth the $100 textbook for just 0.5 extra credit. This class needs better structure.
As a senior, I have NEVER taken a worse professor. Believe the things you read about her. The material was not difficult, but it was taught by my classmates for half of the semester which we were then tested on for the final. She never posted any grades all semester, then randomly slapped a letter grade in the HUB. She needs to be fired ASAP.
Don't take this class
just dont.
I have taken multiple classes with her, all have been difficult. she is a good lecturer and professor. She is extremely knowledgeable in her field, so if you value your understanding over a grade I would definitely recommend Dr. Thompson. Her classes are difficult, you will have to attend class/read textbook/STUDY to earn a good grade in her class.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Mentions noting about work in class, schedules multiple things while expecting students to study for a Monday exam, worst attendance method. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
use flashcards
this professor has given me a very good understanding of the material we've learned. she's very educated and i would love to take a class with her again
Do not take this class.
Worst prof I have ever had. Hardest class I have ever taken. Average on every exam is failing even with the curve. Readings take hours to get through with multiple graded quizzes in each section of each chapter. Lectures make no sense, she refuses to post slides. Idk how this is a requirement for psych because it is bio heavy. GPA will be ruined!
Super boring, lectures the whole class. Projects are posted just a few days before they are due. Never sticks to her tentative schedule. Doesn't respond to emails.
she is one of the worst teacher i had and i would recommend NOT to take this class unless you really have to. the work load is really heavy and there is multiple projects that you have to do that makes no sense and she just reads off of the slides and its really hard to focus in her class cause of the way she teaches is just absolutely terrible.
The way she does attendance bothers the hell out of me. I lowk did not understand her lecture bc she would ramble off & there weren't any info on her slides. Did her attendance through top hat. I wouldn't know what to review for the tests. Would not take her. She's def very passionate about her lectures but does not know how to teach.
Psychology is a stupid class ad Dr. Thompson makes everything exam based.
She mostly lectures, so the class can get boring. She doesn't post notes, so you really need to take them during class. She provides study guides, but they're just outlines and you have to expand on them yourself. There are weekly homework and some projects. Not the absolute worst professor to have, just stay on top of the work.
omg i would rather die than take her class again. exams are not similar to the outline and questions she gives and she just gives too much work. projects are confusing and honestly not useful whatsoever to the lectures. do not take her class
Professor Thompson is very knowledgeable in her field, but this class is god awful. She goes on random tangents for at least half of the class and the slides she uses for her lectures are very unhelpful. She doesn't post grades (which are fully reliant on exams and projects) and the exams are very detailed on topics she teaches poorly.
She has pointless lectures that don't really teach you anything. The only thing that ever taught me anything was the online textbook which combined with all your other homework is worth only 10% of your grade. The exams are difficult and worth 60% of your entire grade. The grading and teaching style is crazy and if you get bored easy than avoid.
Every lecture is an off-topic ramble, every exam is textbook-heavy and has little to do with the lecture materials.
what is discussed in lectures genuinely has nothing to do with what is on the tests or really the class in general and even studying the textbook constantly didn't help with the randomness of her tests
Your grade is 60% test 30% some projects and 10% participation. Her lecture guides were not much help and her lectures are horrible. She has no idea how to operate a computer and I can't comprehend how she hasn't been forced to retire or fired. Believe the rating this class is horrible and I don't recommend it. Wait for a dif proffessor.
Not horrible. The biggest downside is her reading off slides, which gets boring. Her class is just like any college class. The projects were never that difficult, and the readings weren't bad if you spread them out across the week. Its manageable as long as you stay on top of things, pay attention, and go to office hours. People are dramatic.
This was the worst class I have taken. The course is poorly planned and set up for students to struggle. 80% of grade is Exams that did not match lectures, study guides or the textbook. Extra credit was promised early but given far too late and impossible to pass. If you care about your GPA or mental health, AVOID ALEXIS THOMPSON AT ALL COSTS.
Nice person but don't take this class. I've gotten an A in every class so far 3 semesters into college and won't even get above a B in this class. Tests are ridiculously hard for an introductory level class. Projects aren't even graded by her, they're graded by your classmates. Take this class with someone else.
except for the excessive reading assignments and kritik projects being graded by your classmates, i don't think she's a terrible teacher. tip: study from the lecture videos!
The way the projects were done is unfair. Only have a few days to work on them and the tests ask the most random questions so even if you study a lot it could be something she barley talked about.
You will have to take this professor at some point. If you're not religious, I suggest you pick one and start praying.
Way too much work for an intro psych class. Weekly readings and inquizitives take hours. Projects are graded BY your classmates which is ridiculous. If you actually read the textbook and study from the study guide it is still very possible to do well on the exams but you have to put in so much time and effort for that which is not necessary.
Never written a review on here but im passionate about telling others to avoid this professor at all costs. You do 3 projects, all of which are graded by your classmates, and only 40% of your projet grade is your ACTUAL work. She is never reachable outside class. Even if you study rigorously, you won't know 50% of the exam content. Best of luck!!
