I had this professor during the Summer for Environmental Literature. He is great! He has a wonderful personality and knows his stuff! Participate and show up and you will have fun. Nice, reasonable
He is an excellent Writing teacher. I highly RECOMMEND Alf Seegert as one of your Professors when attending the University
Provocative lectures, good feedback, clarity of ideas. Makes material fun! I highly recommend Alf. He is demanding and takes your progress seriously, but is flexible. Very knowledgeable. I was never unhappy with a class session.
Alf was a great Professor. He was funny but kept it in check. Very helpful and reasonable. The material was difficult but he made it accessible. He picked awesome texts which helped immensely. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
If you can take a class from Alf, DO IT. You will not regret it. He takes his class very seriously, so you need to be there, and you need to do the work -- but it's worth it. Fun, entertaining, and you'll remember everything you learned, because it's that great. Heart him!
Alf rocked my world. He was by far the most organized, the most prepared, and one of the most knowledgeable professors I've ever had. Class isn't the easiest, but is worth it. Take him if you can.
Took his online class and found him extremely helpful. When grading papers he not only helps instruct you on how to make it better but also points out areas he really likes. Appears to try and keep his online class as much as an on-campus course as possible with his mandatory MWF discussions and interaction with other students in class.
Alf was always very prepared, took it seriously, and was very on top of taking care of assignments and feedback for students. Knows his stuff, but I wish he would've pushed a little harder. It seemed like he was often holding back his own views and calculating what to say. Highly recommended overall.
Prof. Seegert is the new standard. He knows where literature and social commentary are headed, and is willing to take you there. Savvy, Energetic, committed to his students and the ideas. Yes, he'll make you work, but he knows you can do it, and will back you up all the way if you give it some effort.
Literally the best professor I've had. He is dedicated to the course material and committed to seeing his students succeed. I've taken two courses from him and plan on taking as many more as I can. His classes made me actually think and question, but if you aren't interested in critically engaging with the texts and working, don't take from him.
Amazing teacher! This was my first class with the honors college and I was worried it would be way over my head, but he made the difficult information interesting. By far my favorite class I've ever taken, and the best teacher! You have to work for your A, but Alf is always willing to help, as long as youre putting in the effort.
I totally recommend Alf for theory classes; he's a great teacher and makes materials interesting. I took his online class and it was well organized/structured. Reasonable amount of homework and participation. Fair/generous grader. Best thing about Alf is his enthusiasm for his subject and his students. Highly recommended.
Great Professor who use of multimedia really helped the class understand Critical Theory. He very helpful and he class is easy if you do the work. What is more he makes the class enjoyable so you want to go and do the work. He is the best professor I've had while at the University of Utah.
Alf was an amazing professor. I never wanted to miss his class because everything he taught was so interesting! He has a passion for what he is teaching and is willing to help the students. This is one of the first English class es I've taken that I actually loved enough to participate in class discussions. I'd take classes from him again.
Weird fiction? Pan's Labyrinth? Cthulu? Yes, my friends. Everyone you know will be jealous because your english class is a million times cooler than theirs, and because your teacher is AWESOME. ;)
Alf is fantastic! Took two courses and wanted more. He is committed to student success, provides solid feedback, works hard to help you, is humorous, uses multimedia, validates all opinions but keeps class text-centered. I recommend him for any course! Even wrote me a few letters of rec and has a great system for doing so.
One of the most talented teachers I've had.
I LOVE HIM! I took one class from him by chance and I have found a way to take one of his classes ever since. He honestly wants you to do well in his class and wants you to understand the concepts talked about in class. He welcomes students disagreeing with his thoughts and is always respectful of what is said. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE READING!
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. I took this class last year, and STILL think about Seegert's lectures! If you want to learn a lot, take this class. It is time demanding, but definitely worth it.
Fantastic course. I was initially apprehensive about taking 3600, but this class was worth it. He finds way to make theory interesting and relevant to you. It is a lot of work, but you get so much out of it. Be sure to participate and learn to recognize theoriststheir passages. Highly recommend.
This is an amazing class. I was lucky enough to be in the pilot course, so it was a smaller group. But really, it is fantastic. You learn so much, and the fact that we have a class about virtuality and gaming is a testament to how awesome this professor is. He is super passionate about it and it's really interesting. Get ready to play!
Alf is a wonderful professor who clearly states what he expects from the very beginning of the class. His lectures are always interesting, well-researched and complete. He's a brilliant theorist who teaches the most riveting subjects. Take this professor every chance you get! He does make you work for the grade, but he's fair and realistic.
Arguably one of the most liked teacher in the U's English department. His classes are fun, mentally stimulating , and his lectures are always on point and will not only help you think critically, but also open your mind to a lot of new possibilities on seeing the world. Doing the readingshomework is mandatory and participation really helps.
Dr. Seegert is the best professor I've ever had and is one of the greatest assets the University of Utah has. He is intelligent, thoughtful, and passionate about the material. He is very fair and is helpful to all students. If given the chance, I would take another course from him in the future. You'll work hard, but you won't regret it.
Alf is one of the best professors at the U. His lectures are absolutely amazing. I was hesitant to take a Virtuality in Nature course because I don't even like "virtual" stuff, but this class legitimately changed my life. His class changed the way I think about things. He's a very fair grader and easy to talk with if you need additional help.
Excellent listener. Excellent learning environment. Excellent lectures. He works hard to keep his teaching material current and to apply critical theory. We studied everything related to the topic of virtuality. Genuinely cares about his students. He clearly loves his job. Be advised, though, if you want an A you will have to work hard for it.
Examining video games as literature is amazing. The lectures are wonderful, the material is wonderful, and I love going to class (which is good, attendance is vital). Discussion is lively. I finally get to play video games for homework. Prof Seegert is a joy to learn from.
Professor Seegert was amazing! You have to work for your A that is for sure. But you learn in this class. Even though it is online, he made is relatable and the material used is funny and memorable. Must take this class by him!
He was a very excellent professor in which he was engaged in his lectures and provided thought provoking lectures and ideas which I found fascinating. He is very lenient with his points and deadlines.
Alf Seegart is the best professorteacher I have ever had and I will be looking for more classes of his in the years to come. Do yourself a favor and take a class of his!
He makes it fun to learn. As long as you do the reading each week, you'll have a blast. And in this class, "reading" often meant "play cool video games." Also, take notes on key terms and characters, since they'll be on the cumulative final. I wish all professors loved teaching as much as Seegert.
I took Alf's class a few semesters ago. He's so awesome that the next semester after I took his class, I decided to stop by the classroom just to listen to his lectures again. He makes learning fun, he's super engaging, and it was essentially an (intriguing and stimulating) English class except with video games as the literature. Super fair grader.
Alf is an amazing professor! I've taken two classes from him and I wish I could take more. He is so passionate about what he teaches and he is open to learning from his students. Conversations are never dull. There are usually three papers and he offers extra credit from time to time. Great professor!!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Great discussion based lectures. Good assignments, always willing to provide the most help he can to his students. I'm not even all that into video games, but still loved the analysis and insight into them as a medium that this class provided.
Alf Seegert is one of those professors that strives to run an intellectually stimulating lecture that sticks with you for the rest of the day. His tests are rigorous but fair, and his weekly assignments are fun and thought provoking. He offers extra credit if you are willing to work for it. Well worth your time and tuition, take his class!
Alf is a great professor! I've taken a few classes from him but the 5010 Virtuality and re-enchantment was the only one I wasn't super sold on. We read some really awesome stuff and some really horrible stuff. This class is definitely an acquired taste.
He's quite good, his 5 to 15 page (lots of pictures, so bit shorter) lessons are great, and way better than any lecture. His syllabus says everything is required, and you have to read every reading and class will be super hard, but its just for show. Got A on mid term w/o reading. D- on final paper, still got B+ in class. Very helpful feedback.
It was online, so the lectures were pages of reading on top of the assigned reading and there was a lot of discussions. My favorite part was he used multiple forms of media and mediums to help you understand and engage with the complex theories you were reading about. I took this class without that element before and didn't learn a thing.
Dr. Seegert is intelligent, passionate, and genuinely has a gift for teaching complex information in an exciting and informative manner. He offers the most engaging material from various sources and offers unique perspectives (and allows students to form their own without judgement). TAKE CLASS FROM DR. SEEGERT.
Dr. Seegert is amazing. Lots of reading, two discussions every week. There is a midterm and a final test, and there is a paper due around midterm + the final paper. The midterm paper is basically do it and you get full credit, which is nice. Dr. Seegert is funny and smart. He gives a ton of extra credit, too. I got points for pointing out a typo.
One of the best teachers I have had at the U! Very knowledgeable in what he teaches. He has writing assignments based on the books or movies you watched but it is like half a page of writing. So easy! But it is not a class you can miss! I would retake the class again!
Alf is easily my favorite professor. Taken him for several courses, and he always manages to teach me something new. He's on the cutting edge of new media pedagogy: always a movie clip or funny picture to illustrate important points. Great for visual learners, but he's also quite cerebral. Very intelligent guy.
Don't take a class from Seegert unless you're very passionate about the subject matter. I'm a senior, and I've never taken a 2000-level class anywhere near this difficult. He will expect you to have done a very close reading of texts and paid extremely close attention in class. Midterm and final are in depth, no curve. Lectures are intimidating.
Awesome professor. Fun, interesting, and invested in what he teaches.
Alf is the best professor you could ask for. He fosters student conversation. I could tell he loves the content and cares about his student's success. The vgs class has 9 500-word critical responses. They are every two weeks. There is a midterm and a final. If you pay attention and read you will do fine on the tests. Grading is fair.
Definitely one of the best professors at the U! Just as everyone has rated, he is a great and fantastic lecturer and knows how to organize the classroom to encourage discussion. Put your work into it and you will enjoy the course and do well, though it can be hard for someone who does not work hard.
Took his theory class last fall (late review). It was online, and there were always really interesting videos and movies that we got to watch. He makes the material applicable, since we watched cloud atlas, black mirror, etc. (things that we've probably watched). Not to be cliche, but he's by far my favorite professor, and I've never even met him.
Seegert is probably the best professor I've ever had. I worked really hard in his class - the course is tough, but it's worth it. It gave me a good foundation for all my other coursework. Seegert's online content was really well organized and interesting. He gives really useful feedback on papers too.
QUICK NOTE: Do NOT take Alfs Lord of the Rings class if you have no interest in the subject matter. Only take this class if you are really invested in the subject. That being said, Alf is probably my favorite professor at the U. His lectures are inspiring, the text is a fun read, and assignments are very applicable. Class is well organized.
He is very passionate about what he does and keeps class interesting. His tests are not hard. If you study your notes, you'll probably get an A. There's a critical response page due almost every week, but they're easy. Dr. Alf is a great professor.
Awesome class. Best humanities credit I've ever taken
I have taken 2090 and 5090 now, and Dr. Alf is easily the best teacher I've ever had. He's incredibly passionate about what he teaches. He makes every lecture engaging, and he seems to genuinely care about students and their opinions. His classes are not Easy-A's, but if you care about the material you will do well.
While this was the hardest class I think I've ever taken, the professor did make it passable as long as you were willing to put in the time and effort. Don't think any of his classes will be easy, but I would say they are well worth it.
Dr. Alf remains the best professor I've ever taken. I've been graduated a year now and I just came back to write this review because his classes STILL affect me a year later. His lectures are amazing, he's incredibly caring, and he puts time and effort into your learning like no other professor. Do yourself a favor and take his class!!
Dr. Alf is fantastic. He's remarkably knowledgeable and is an excellent teacher. Class is always entertaining and fascinating, assignments are clear and well organized, and readings are relevant. This class challenged me to think about literature in ways I haven't before. It's hard work, but well worth it. I highly recommend this professor!
Extremely passionate about the subject matter, making learning and engaging more fun. Bans cell phones in class, shows that he cares.
Dr. Alf very much changed the way I view videogames. His lectures and discussions are excellent. There are only eight 400-word writings as the homework, and doing them really helps understanding and reviewing. He also offers a large amount of extra credit, and if you finish them it should be an easy A. Definitely the best Humanity-credit class!
Great professor. If you're knowledgeable about video games, you won't need the textbooks at all. The midterm and final were so easy my parents probably could've done them. Dr. Alf is a bit strict about not using devices in class, but unlike most other professors, he actually provides a good reason for it. (Look up "magic circle")
I absolutely loved Dr. Alf. His class was engaging, fun, interesting, but also filled with a lot of material and out-of-the-box thinking. It's not an easy class, but he is very willing to work with you and gives really great feedback. Show up to class and be ready to write your best. One of the best and most inspirational classes I've ever taken.
Took ENGL 2090 online for humanities credit and bc it sounded easy. I ended up greatly enjoying the class without much VG knowledge previously. Dr. Alf clearly cares about his students and his passion for the topic. The class involves a lot of writing and discussions, but if you stay on top of them it's not a hard class.
Dr. Alf is great in that he's very knowledgeable about the content of his course and is genuinely interested in reading his students work. He has clear grading outlines and gives thorough feedback on essays. Don't take this class if you're not particularly interested in the content or don't like reading. I can not stress this enough. Do the reading
Dr. Alf (what we call him) is the best professor I've ever had. Intro to Critical Theory is by no means an easy class, but his lectures and feedback help in understanding whatever you need help with. He cares so much about his students and his material and, during this semester with the COVID-19 shutdown he made his class even easier for us.
I took Dr Seegerts Video Game Storytelling class in 2014 so the course number may be inaccurate (sorry!) Hands down, the best teacher at University of Utah. The only reason i did not complete his course was personal life emergencies and he went above and beyond to reach out to me and try to help me despite me apathy at the time. Take his class!
Dr. Alf is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He is a fountain of knowledge and gives fantastic feedback and recommendations. His lectures were in PDF form but never a dull read. Participation matters on discussion boards, LOTS of reading, but grading criteria is clear so as long as you put in some effort you will do well.
This is my favorite class I've ever taken. I was doubting that game design was the right major for me, but this class made me excited for it again. Dr. Alf cares a lot about the students and the material, and if you're willing to engage and really put effort into this class, then you'll love it. If you aren't, then it's going to be tough.
This may sound dramatic but this class legitimately changed my outlook on life and has given me a newfound love for reading. Dr. Alf Seegert is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He gives great feedback and even recommends insightful bonus texts on occasion. It's a travesty that courses aren't guaranteed to be as edifying as his.
Dr. Alf is an incredible instructor who cares so much. This class has a LOT of reading, make sure you stay up on your chapter and lecture readings. Dr. Alf is super knowledgeable, a reasonable grader, and overall very understanding instructor. Highly recommend this class and this professor.
Great professor. I took his online ENGLISH 2090 this semester with him. He has many extra credit opportunities to help make up a bad grade on an exam. I do wish though that daily assignments and critical responses were worth much more than the exams.
Dr. Alf is by far my favorite professor. He facilitates incredible discussions and I mean it when I say this class has genuinely changed the way I see and interact with the world on a daily basis. There are not enough characters here to accurately express how amazing the experience of this class was. I can't recommend Dr. Alf and his classes enough
I didn't like this class because you are required to have a PC to play the games you will have to write about. You're required to buy and play some 70s and 80s games also. Midterm and final are in-person even if you take the online course. The assignments are also unclear since Alf's canvas page is not very organized.
Amazing class, and great professor. I learned a lot, and the lessons are written really well so they aren't hard to read. I kind of slacked off on assignments, but if you keep up and do all the assignments you'd easily get an A.
Dr. Alf conveys concepts clearly and you can tell the guy's really passionate about LOTR. He always has a plan for class and not once was it ever rote reading off a slide. Classes are genuinely interesting.
I took it online but I'd recommend taking it in person, seems like it's heavily discussion based and the online discussion boards don't cut it. I was excited about this class but didn't feel like I learned anything useful in the end. Lessons were fine, textbook was extremely dry. Prof seemed nice enough, not too hard, just super boring class imo.
Dr. Alf is attentive, willing to work with students, and makes sure no one is left in the dust even though the class moves quickly. The course I took (ENGL 2090) was outstanding. You could tell he cared - which made the course that much more enjoyable. If you like video games in any capacity I would highly recommend Dr. Alf's courses.
In my 5 years at the U, throughout 6 different majors, Dr. Alf is by far the best professor I've ever had. He produces a comfortable & supportive classroom environment, and there was not one lecture/discussion that made me feel bored or disinterested. Even if you're not super interested in the subject matter, take his classes! You won't regret it.
The word count of feedback she wrote is more than my assignment!!!
Dr. Alf's class was awesome. The written lectures were engaging and fun to work through. Any required responses are quite short, but there are many of them. Daily lesson responses in addition to six critical responses that are twice as long. Highly recommend, but be ready to commit a couple of days a week to it.
I'm pretty reluctant to share how amazing Dr. Alf is. I'd prefer to gatekeep him so I can easily get into more of his classes. Still, don't hesitate to take a class from him. He is absolutely incredible, and you will not regret taking one of his courses. Inspirational and fun lectures with reasonable reading and writing assignments. Best ever!!
I didn't know him personally so I can't rate him based on that. I took this class for an easy gen end credit, but it's a lot of busy work. About 2 discussions a week with a midterm and a final. Wouldn't reccomend taking this class if you're looking for a light work load class.
Professor Alf is fantastic. He is, by far, the best professor I've had at the U. I cannot recommend his class enough for anyone of any discipline or major. He's the kind of teacher where you find yourself engrossed and passionate about the subject they teach. My one fault is that his class is not long enough. I wish I could retake this class.
Dr. Seegert made this class a joy to take. He was extremely knowledgeable, and even though the class was online, the "lectures" were clear and hilarious to read. He grades tough but fairly as long as you closely follow the rubric. Be prepared to write A LOT of discussion posts and to take two moderately hard exams. Overall, this class was great!
Dr. Seegert is my favorite professor I've ever had at the U! I took this class under the impression it was a regular fantasy literature class (I've never read/watched LOTR), and I completely adored it. His passion for the world and writing absolutely shows through his lectures, and I'm taking another of his classes just so I can have him again.
Dr. Alf is among the BEST professors I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. He is incredibly kind, knowledgeable, real, and passionate. His lectures are never boring, and I left every class feeling inspired and smarter! His assignments are fair, but he makes you work for a good grade (which I respect). Please do yourself a favor and take his class!
Lots of homework and reading, but it's all video game-related, so it's usually entertaining. Online lessons were just PDFs linked on Canvas, along with a discussion post. Dr. Alf is probably my favorite professor at the U, and while I like his courses better in person, online is still wonderful. He's clearly so passionate about what he teaches :)
