One of the best professors you will ever get. He knows a lot about the subject material, his lectures are REAllY interesting and engaging. No joke. He is funny and really cares about the students and is very fair. I totally reccomend him!You will enjoy his class.

During lectures, he rarely writes anything on the board. You can print the notes off Beachboard though. As long as you read and study the notes, you will do fine. Don't procrastinate on the papers since they are so easy anyways. Overall is an easy class as long as you pay attention. You don't want to miss this class. And he looks like a student...

My favorite class I have taken at long beach. Cool teacher, makes class very interesting. Very little homework and pretty easy tests. He makes class very relevant today. I highly recomend.

I liked him. The class wasn't too much work... 4 short reaction papers and 3 exams. He's a really cool guy, but his lectures are pretty boring and, while they're usually somewhat relevant to social stratification, they quite often have very little to do with what we need to know for exams.

this class was soooo boring. but it IS social problems. so u go in and talk about poverty one day, crime another day, immigration...etc. and while these sound interesting, believe me this guy makes them not. pretty tough grader and only a few tests. good luck.

Professor Hernandez-Marquez is a really smart, cool teacher who cares about his students. His grading standards are fair and class discussions are fun. Does not overload students with reading and homework.

he is very informative and he loves teaching. i love this professor i wish he would teach every soc class. his test are not that hard. you may have to study but you learn alot my just sitting in class. he like it when the class interacts and he does a good job of making it happen. take him when possible

He is a pretty cool guy. don't read in his class though, he will call you out on it and then announce that you will never achieve the career you want. Kind of a slow-paced course, pretty interesting. Way easy papers and pretty easy tests. overall, a good class and good professor

Professor Marquez was truly one of the best professors I've had at Long Beach State so far. Attendance isn't mandatory, but his lectures are so interesting that you'll want to show up. His papers are extremely easy, tests are a bit tougher but multiple choice. I highly reccomend him and would definitely take him again!

Awesome teacher. Lectures are somewhat fun and interesting. Gives 3 essay exams and requires four 5-page papers. If you do the reading, attend lecture, and put forth decent effort, an A or B is reasonable.

this is such an interesting class, definitely one of my favorites, just spend a good amount of time studying and working on the papers. everytime you leave, you'll hate society haha, its all problems! but he's a good professor. and hot! i dunno what it was, but i wanna marry him. haha! i got jealous everytime he talked about his wife. sad...

He is a wonderful professor. Most of class time is devoted to lecture. He encourages student participation because it only makes the lecture much more interesting. He'll tell you just about everything that'll be covered on the exams. He's a bit tough with the grading when it comes to papers. Yes, and I wanted to marry him too.

I have taken him for both soc. 142 and soc. 420 and I absolutely loved him. He is a great professor who makes the material very relevant and interesting. I always looked forward going to class. I highly recommend taking him for any classes. And yes, i ALSO had a huge crush on him, i don't know what it was but i wish i could marry him as well :)

Probably one of the most interesting professors out there. He is a die-hard sociology professor who has a real passion for teaching. He made the material very personal and explained every theory extremely well. Extremely fun and interesting class. Be prepared to spend some time to write your papers.

I learned so much from this class, his lectures are always very thoughtful and interesting. All the comments about wanting to marry him are making me laugh because...I feel the same way! He is just dorky... but cute and obviously passionate about his subject. Papers did take some time and effort, but still HIGHLY recommended professor :)

He posts notes for the chapters which are helpful for writing the reaction papers and studying for exams. There are 3 papers and exams are in essay format but he gives the prompt beforehand. He is very helpful if you are struggling in his class. He is a very easy going guy and passionate about what he teaches. I would take again!

Soc students you will regret not taking him! It was great being around someone so passionate about the subject. Really really interesting and thought provoking class. He has awesome ideas and is super engaging. Soc 420 is a class everyone should take, Soc major or not. Educate yourself!

I LOVE him! <3 He is an amazing, beautiful, and funny professor that lights up the room with his smile! ;) He is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Great professor! Always keeping the lecture and discussions interesting with current events and fun stories. Go to class and study from the book for 3 multiple q-exam with three papers.

Prof HM is a great professor. His lectures are always interesting and funny. He always has a smile on his face. You must read the book to do well on the test. He grades easy on the Article Review Papers. He is fair!

Great teacher. Energetic and passionate about the subject. Took him for Social Stratification. Concerened about his students and is a great mentor.

Has three exams, two article reviews. For the article review, make sure to include quotes from the book. He'll give you a 65% if you don't. Just read the book before the exam and you should be fine. Definitely buy the book, don't buy an ebook.

Lecture was boring. Couldn't wait for class to end. Two article reviews, he's funny but class can get tedious. There's a midterm and then the final exam.Pretty easy class but too boring.

I took him for Soc. 142. He's really good; very interested in the subject. Three exams, 2-3 article reviews. Very helpful but won't spoon-feed you the info. You have to work in this class. Very down-to-earth, no power trips or ego trips. Be sure to read the text; you will need it for article reviews and for exams. Great Prof..take him!

Loved his class! He's so down to earth and his life stories make the class fun & interesting. 2 Article Reviews (3-4 pgs), 2 exams, 1 final. Tricky tests but if you read the book, you're good (: TAKE HIM, YOU WONT REGRET IT!

Awesome professor.I enjoyed his lectures because he makes them fun and interesting. He is very helpful and does his best to make the material easy to understand. The thing I like the most was his story-telling of real life examples. These examples helped prepare for the exam. Need to read the book and watch the in-class video clips. Fun class.Study

Marquez is a very intelligent professor! Although he is a bit intimidating he is extremely helpful. He enjoys this subject. Lectures are interesting. This class is not an easy A, but stop being lazy and do the work. Take his class!

This is probably my favorite professor i have had in Sociology. I can't wait to take another course with him next semester. He doesn't ask a lot from his students, and he makes the material relate to our lives. Great professor! Take any class with him, you wont regret it

Ths guy has an attitude of "I am Sociology". He is pretty much full of himself so whatever you do, do not contradcit him on the exams. The four exams are essay form so just go to class, take good notes, read! read! read! and just rewrite whatever the hell he said on his lectures in your own words and you will get at least a B. It worked for me.

Great professor that makes everything interesting. He is very into what he does and does it wonderfully. You should read the text however as the exams are based on lectures and texts.

Best professor ever. Basically the reason thatI'm a Soc. major. What he wants from his students is very clear, but he also wants you to take the extra step to be involved in discussions and assignments. I think he's hilarious too which makes class awesome.I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants to marry him and have his babies...

Definitely enjoyed the class, not the easiest and I didn't find the power point useful for upcoming tests. The material is pretty much the same stuff I learned in other Soc classes but if your not a senior then there will be new things.

BEST PROFESSOR AT CSULB! Very interesting class, but can be challenging. He gives it to you straight, while still adding humor to the situation. Cares deeply about his students. Even if not a SOC major, very interesting course to take.

THIS IS NOT AN EASY A CLASS. His lectures are insanely interesting, but he grades EXTREMELY hard. He expects a lot- I am an A honors student that has read, studied, and attended every class and still am getting a B. He's a nice guy but he's particular about what he wants, so be very cautious with him. Lectures are hilarious & interesting though.

Professor HM is the most entertaining and best professor I have ever had in my entire career at csulb. I usually get A's but got a B in his class. He even accepts a draft for the papers and writes back comments- very helpful. His class attendance rate is very high. Go early or stand on the side. You better read ahead or you'll fall behind!

Class can be interesting but also boring. He uses good examples that relates to the topic and his lectures. You have 2 essays, 2 mini essays, and 3 exams. Overall, class ain't that hard but not a breeze.

Not an easy "A." He's a hard grader and doesn't tell you what you need to know for the exams. Unless you actually read all 5-6 chapters he assigns for each exam, the highest grade you'd get is a B. The class average ended up being a "C" for all the exams and he didn't curve. he also asks about numbers on his exams. 50 multiple choice, 2 pts each.

He grades too harshly. It's a good thing, but I was not expecting that considering his mediocre lecturing style. He has an annoying "I have a perfect life" personality. Getting an A is nearly impossible, but it is not time demanding. It's his harsh grading AND the lack of opportunity to recover from bad grades that make this class awful.

I failed his class the first time due to being uninterested in the class. DO NOT PISS HIM OFF. He will call u out on it. A kid dropped out the first day because he caught him taking selfies & embarrassed him in front of the whole class. The material is hard to understand and he tries to claify it as much as possible. u will fail if u dont listen.

I am not an honors student and I received an A in the class. Personally, I found him engaging and extremely sarcastic. I really enjoyed being in his class. No it is not easy but it isn't difficult to pass. Participate in class. He tends to think that students from low-income communities are rare gems in college though. Very dry humor but take him.

Great Professor. Great Lectures. If CSULB offered a "Mr. Sociology Award", it would be rewarded to HM every year ( I'm not joking). Attend Class!!! My attendance grade is what pushed me to an A in his course.

Great professor, there are 600 points he gives out in this class, 300 for exams, 200 for essays, and 100 for attendance so basically 1/6 of your grade is a free-bee. Also he's very helpful and replies back to emails extremely quickly. I found his lectures really interesting and important since his test are more on his lectures than on the book.

HM is hilarious! Very organized and very clear on what is expected of you as a student. Papers but no HW. Come to class/pay attention during lectures. Do your assigned reading. He gives out study guides so tests are do-able if you study. He grades tough on papers and expects you to write at a college level. Good professor!

Makes a lot of jokes, which I personally think is always a good thing because it keeps us interested. Wrote a lot of papers which may not sound appealing but in the end it helps YOU out by making you a better writer.

His class is really interesting, participation is a must, his lectures revolve around people talking. If you don't like to talk or share your opinion don't take it. He has 2 essays that are pretty simple if you are capable of writing a college level paper.

HM, is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is very accommodating and tries to get his students involved in discussions. He makes class fun and usually lets us go early. He exams are take home and he basically gives you the answer. Papers are fairly short and you can submit drafts for him to give you feedback. Make sure you go to class tho

If you're looking for an easy A class, do not take him. He's an amazing lecturer and you WILL learn a lot from this class, but he will definitely challenge your writing. My advice is to see him during office hours to get clear feedback on what to improve on. Overall he's hilarious and inspirational and wants his students to see the big picture.

Best professor! makes lectures pretty easy to understand so when you read you understand the material better and focus on the main points. He doesn't give out grades, you earn it. He is very strict on format and following directions, but he is very clear on what he wants so if you can follow directions then you shouldn't worry. He's great!!

He is not the easiest professor to take so if you want an easy A this is not the class for you. You'll actually have to work for your grade. His lectures are amazing and he makes them relatable and funny. Readings are a must and his class is all essays. He was hard but I took him a couple times because of the way he teaches.

He is an extremely tough grader!! He is very funny though and his lectures are great!! I would take him again if I had more time to get help with my papers

He is an incredibly smart guy and you can tell in his lectures. I enjoyed listening to him, he was interesting and funny but can come off as intimidating. His exams are essays so you must be a strong writer. Overall I leaned a lot about theory in this class and I would take again.

Be prepared to write, write, write papers! All of his tests, exams, and even extra credit are essays. You must be a strong writer in order to do well in his class. It is extremely important to read the textbook since that is the only work cited he is looking for on all the essays. He takes attendance for every class meeting which equals to 100 pts!

HM is a tough grader, but once you get a sense of what he wants in his papers, it becomes very easy from there on out. Cool dude.

HM is hilarious! I always looked forward to his class. He is a tough grader. Must be a strong writer. If you're skipping class and screwing around on your computer and not paying attention, then good luck! if you show up, read, ask questions, and take notes, then you will be fine. Papers are 3 pages long.

FIRST off let me tell you professor HM is a tough grader! I struggle with writing BUT make sure you do all his optional drafts he really helps you out. MAKE SURE youre reaching out to him, so he notices you. IF YOU TRY .. YOU WILL PASS TRUST ME. YES ITS NOT AN easy A BUT as long as you try and talk to him youll be fine! Hes also really funny!

One of the best professors I have had! He was very helpful and offered the opportunity to turn in drafts and he would give feedback before the due date. He also held optional study group sessions, which help. Unless you don't take an opportunity for his assistance or read the textbook, most likely you will not do good. Very approachable professor!!

He cancelled class often, was very chill. Lectures are very entertaining as well. Papers are graded a bit harshly but gives great feedback. Attendance is graded but he's hilarious, that's not an issue. Just do the work, do your best and he will pass you. His tests are very easy as well. I'm trying to take him again next semester but am waitlisted.

Super easy class if you do the reading. 3-5 Page paper every other week unless he misses class then he removes it. Papers are super easy all the answers are in the notes and he lets you submit ruff drafts and he will read them and tell you what to change to get a 100 in less then 24 Hours

don't get me wrong, he's a really funny and sweet guy who genuinely cares about his students and their success, but his teaching style (reading off slides from textbook w/ few extra details) isn't for me, so i probably wouldn't take him again. 2 papers (he's particular about them but comments on drafts), 2 tests + 1 final (textbook very helpful)

I'm not a big fan of his teaching style, it often involves having to do the lessons on your own at home. He's a really nice professor and entertaining, but does get upset with technology in the classroom, not a big deal though, he's very nice about it. Also a tough grader, and everyone starts off with a C. 3 tests, 3 essays, difficult to get an A.
