Really good teacher and class is always fun and never boring
Great Professor and very enthusiastic on the subject!
Astronomy Lect/Lab with Prof.Alaniz in Spring '04 semester. The material is not hard; his teachings make it worth the while and he is very willing to help and is approachable. He is resonable and overall I enjoyed learning from him. I got A's in both.
This class is just hard but he really is a good professor.
mr. alaniz IS a GREAT professor. he would teach at a level that everyone would understand. i loved those jokes that he would through in every now and then. i was worried about this class because i haven't been in school in a long time, but if i could get an "A" then anyone can.
very cool professor
Very good teach. Clear on his lectures, does talk a bit fast. he writes notes on the board that's clearly understandable. The tests are a bit hard but if you study you can get a good grade. He makes astronomy interesting too.
I liked Prof. Alaniz, he is a really nice professor. He cares for his students and as long as you do your homework, and read the summary reviews at the end of each chapter, then you will be well-prepared for exams. This course is not easy, but he makes it possible to pass with a good grade.
Alaniz is a great professor! He loves astronomy & therefore his teaching of the subject to his students reflects that. His notes are in outline form which is very easy to understand, he is very helpful and is funny. I highly recommend him!
alaniz is probably the best teacher at sac! he loves he work and always gets into his lectures with funny stories and jokes. clearly explains what he wants from homework and tests. his notes are easy to follow in outline form. such a great teacher almost changed major to science for this(but i really hate science) great teacher, very interesting

He's not hot! But he is thorough, nice, entertaining, enthusiastic, and helpful.
Awsome professer. Just remember to study all of his drawings and you'll make an A.
I had a blast in his class, I thought it was fun.
He is a great guy, and a fun professor.
I GUESS I LIKED HIM SO MUCH BECAUSE IT WAS A LAB CLASS, BUT HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR THAT WANTS TO PASS EVERYONE!!!!
Lots if homework, tests are tough I don't think anyone in my class got an A.
Very cool teacher, he doesn't want anyone to fail, but the tests are really hard. Great class if you are prepared for all of the work involved.
Mr. Alaniz is a great teacher! He explains very well in a way everybody can understand the material. He is very easy going and lenient... he even drops your lowest test grade! Not too many teachers do that these days! Yes, there's homework, but thats with any class. I wouldn't want to take the class with any other teacher!
Good Job
He's ok. His homework is not that hard but his tests are. You an get an A on the homework and a C on the tests. He does however grade on a slight curve and that helps. He never misses class and you can tell that he loves what he does.
Very interesting class. His tests come from notes readings and homework, if you go over this info you pass. This is not an easy A but it is possible. He is always willing to explain in more depth, to help his students understand each topic.
He was cool. At times he was soo interested in something he was teaching, that it made you interested also. He very knowlegeable in many areas I think he was a former pothead hippie, but he has a good sense of humor. I'm pretty sure he had a thing for my girlfriend though.
Great Professor!!! He loves what he does...and it shows! Plus he cares about his students....wants people to learn and enjoy his class!!
Mr. Alaniz is VERY passionate about Astronomy, which easily rubs off on students who are even slightly interested. Not an easy A, but Bs and Cs shouldn't be a problem at all.
Mr. Alaniz is an excellent teacher. He grades with a curve on tests so don't fret about a low grade. He gives very detailed notes for you to copy in his lecture and he drops your lowest test grade and a few homework grades for you. He does everything in his power to make sure you understand and is a great teacher. I enjoyed the class alot.
Mr. Alaniz is a great professor. He's very passionate about what he teaches. He does give curves on test & also gives HMWK so that helps w/ your grade. I highly recommend. Study the notes he gives & you’ll do just fine.
Professor Alaniz was awesome. He is so personable! He gives great opportunities to succeed. He assigns 8 homework assignments, but you only have to do 6, he gives 4 exams but takes the best 3. I got a B, I highly recommend him for a science teacher. He is passionate about what he does and he at least gets you interested in the subject.
Mr. Alaniz is a nice man, pretty funny too, but when he teaches he talks uncomfortably fast. You'll get used to it and you will learn some interesting stuff, but if you have A.D.D, get out while you can.
he was an excellent teacher! very passionate about astronomy. his sense of humor was a little out there but i thought he was hilarious. he gives curves on tests. he is very helpful if you ask. i would strongly recommend taking his class.
Alaniz is the best Astronomy teacher of San Antonio College. The most professional and helpful of all. He's very respectful and cares about the progress of his students. Everybody likes him and so do the students. Nobody drops his class because with him you'll really learn. He's an excellent teacher. I recommend this teacher to everyone.
When it comes to math, physics and astronomy he's an expert. He has a lot of patience with slow learners (like me!)and gets well along with his students. Talks a little bit fast and his tests can be a bit hard, but his homeworks are easy. He will help you pass with a B,but you have to study. A very good astronomy teacher, take his class!
He is an awesome teacher, truly interested in the topics he teaches and full of wonderful insider information. His class is interesting yet a bit on the hard side, study, do the homework and ask, he is always willing to help. Recommend it thoroughly!
I took Professor Alaniz for his basic Astronomy course. At first, I was a bit discouraged not by him, but by the course load. It took some time, but with his hand-outs, and his homework assignments. Anyone can realistically get an "A." His tests are difficult, but he drops lowest test of 4, and 2 of the 8 homework assignments! Nice guy, helpful too
Professor knows his stuff!!! He drops alot of hints on what will be on the tests...pay attention. It is a good class, do not take it if you want an easy science.
great teacher. he knows his stuff. he will update you on any news like the sun or the planets.
Awesome professor. Truly loves his field and he will devote as much time as necessary to help you understand. In-class demonstrations. Tests: Best 3 of 4. Homework: Best 8 of 10. Outlines everything on the board. One cool hippie!
I Love Him And Learned More Than Expected. I Was Skeptical At First But I Grew To Love Astronomy. Good Amount Of Work Not Too Much Not Too Little. It Might Seem Like The Work Is Another Language Or Something But Once You Get It, You Will Like It. I Would Definitely Take Him Again. Thank You Professor Alaniz For Everything. He Is Nice Looking Too!!!
Mr. Alaniz LOVES his job! He is all about Astronomy and you catch the excitement too if you actually try. I had not had a science course in over 10 years and I still pulled a B in this class. It is a lot of work but all relevant and totally helps on the tests. He allows makeups and works with you all the way. HINT:Take the LAB simultaneously.
He is strict when it comes to attendance, don't miss more than 2 days because you will get very behind. He speaks a bit fast but if you ask him to repeat what you didn't hear he will. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. He helped me pass my class,he can be patient if you are a slow learner as well. With Alaniz you'll pass with a good grade.
He was my favorite teacher at SAC. His stuff is hard but if you put the effort in you'll pass the class. Also if you copy every note he writes on the board exactly as he wrote it you have all you need to study for the test in plain english, plus the pictures he draws, MEMORIZE them.
I really enjoyed taking this class with Mr. Alaniz. His love for astronomy was really contagious and his class ended up being one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. I highly recommend Mr. Alaniz.
awesome professor!!<33 learned so much && test are easy just make sure 2 take notes && remember the drawings!!
Mr Alaniz is a very nice guy and extremely passionate about astronomy. He is a great teacher and you will learn from him. He can be a little forgetful at times, but rely on your partners and you will be fine. He will keep you the entire class so expect that, but other than that easy "A".
Summer semester was intense even tho he cut out some stuff we were taking tests once a week. 4 tests, 1 dropped, and 8 hw, 2 dropped. Attendance is mandatory. The book is needed to do hw but read book to understand material better. Lets you email hw until last second it's due. Gave us a break during 3hr long class. Study, study, study!
A+ prof. kinda funny, will work with you. allows 2 dropped hw grades and 1 dropped test. MUST read the book, you'll fail without it. He basically reviews the chapters in class, offers extra credit on exams
He makes his class extremely interesting, and is always willing to help or explain anything. If you take good notes and do the homework, the class isn't difficult. Definitely would take him again if I needed another science course.
i just took him this semester and at first the test were really hard so i had to change my way of studying for test and i started making an A. lots of notes. if you dont take them you WONT pass.does drop one test grade and hw grade. extra points on exam. sometimes gives you answers and curves on test. but the test are hard.great teacher tho!!
Extremely knowledgeable, incredibly friendly and helpful. Has a funny sense of humour that made class fun!! A little unorganized, but flexible. One of my favorite professors at SAC!
Very good and helpful, Alaniz is very enthusiastic about what he's teaching and that can be felt through his class. Definitely recommended for anyone interested in astronomy or looking for an a fascinating class
Great! Enthusiastic, helpful, funny, considerate, makes subject interesting. Answers email and phone calls. Lots of notes. Willing to answer questions and help if you need it. TAKE HIM. You will do well. Wish more professors were like him!
I needed a science, thought astronomy would be interesting. Boy is there WAAAYYY more to it that I thought. Mr. Alaniz made it fun, I looked foward to class! You can tell he LOVES astronomy and makes you kinda love it too. I would definatly take him again if I needed to. There is a lot of homework but it's worth it.
This class is so challenging... It was really hard for me, specially the major exams but Mr. Alaniz is a sweetheart and he helps you out A LOT if you try. Study the H.W and Drawings thoroughly and you should pass.
Mr. Alaniz is an excellent instructor. He's accessible, friendly, enthusiastic, and best of all passionate.
Great professor!! He loves what he does and makes the class fun. He cares about his student and while it is hard, you'll enjoy and learn a lot. I made a C in the lecture but with each test improved bc I learned his style. Updates you with your grade regulary. Took him again for lab and got an A! Take him you won't regret it and be ready to learn!
Alaniz is totally into Astronomy, and that rubs off on you. I think Astronomy is totally an interesting class to take, so I recommend it to everyone. The lectures are kinda hard to follow, so you need to read your book. Homework is submitted online and it's straight from the book. Very good at keeping you informed about your grade.
As many, I too needed a Science. I've always been interested in Astronomy and thought it would be a fun class. Well, that it is! But beware, this is not an easy class! He could probably be one of the best professors I've ever had. He will explain things in a way you want to learn more. Great Class! Great Professor!
This class made me realize how much I love astronomy. Alaniz is a great professor but you have to study. Do the homework he assigns, study the homework and his notes, and you will do great. He speaks fast, but will take time to help you. This was the best class I've ever taken.
great professor!! he goes over test material in class alot i from the book. remember numbers !!! study all test material for the final!!
I didn't get a good grade in his class because I missed a lot of days due to work. But he is a good professor. Homework assigned and graded. Read the chapters and do the assignments and you'll pass. He is cheerful, funny, and helpful.
He will make you love astronomy. Loved his class, and he is such an interesting person. I would definitely recommend this class! Study and attend class, you will get a good grade.
Mr. Alaniz is a nice professor, but the way he teaches is vegue and not helpful. He doesn't have a schedule for his teaching, so he's allover the place and he doesn't provide test reviews. He sometimes is not there before the exam day. And if you email him, don't expect him to reply, and if he replies, it would be after a couple of days.
You're probably like me. You are looking for an easy science class. Astronomy is NOT easy. The Stars and Galaxies class is full of Applied Math and coordinates. Every lecture is confusing. This is my last semester, and I'm wondering if this class is going to screw up my graduation chances.
This class is hard, but it is not impossible. Do the homework, take notes, and read the chapters. To pass the tests, all you need to do is study the homework (professor posts the answers online). He will also randomly hint at things that may be on the test. There is no easy science class, so you might as well try your best.
This class is rather simple. The Math used is 0303 and below. So those complaining about applied Math need to rethink their Major. Lectures are funny and engaging. Textbook is clear and his teaching style is straightforward. He gives you ALL the answers in his lectures for HW and Tests. This class doesn't use Calculus at all which is a shame.Easy A
This class was SO difficult! Daily hw due the following day, lots of math. I personally didn't like his method of teaching bcuz he is all over the place. He confuses himself when solving problems & will admit to being the most difficult Astro teacher. Very difficult to get help from him, he just sends u to the tutoring dept. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
THE BEST TEACHER AT SAC!!! helps and talks you through everything he can possible. you'll have to put some kind of effort not be a dead stump. but you'll love it! he makes you enjoy the material! waiting to take him again next semester!
Very awesome man! Intelligent, made me love love love astronomy. Always excited for his class. Older yet somehow attractive? Probably half hippie :) Class was not difficult if you're interested. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
POTATO! (You'll understand if you take the class.) Alaniz is SO FRICKIN COOL!! He makes the class fun, & is super duper helpful! He takes students hiking at Enchanted Rock and Los Maples, it's awesome! :D Also, he helps with the science groups SACNAS and Society of Physics Students; he is very involved & upbeat! (:
Mr. Alaniz is great! Very helpful and willing to help out (just as long as you're active and don't slack in your classwork!) **DON'T take if you don't like POTATO MATH (algebra). But very easy aside from that. He's super laid back, almost hippy-ish, and makes lots of sarcastic jokes in class.
He is a wonderful teacher who really cares about his students. He is really enthusiastic about physics and astronomy which makes his class really enjoyable. You do need to study of course, this is college, but if you do study it isn't that hard and he grades very fairly.
He is a very smart man, very straight forward and confident of his abilities. He was a popular teacher in my class and many students liked him and enjoyed his class. He is very talkative but has a bit of a weird sense of humor at times. I did love the group projects he made them fun,the lessons are a bit hard sometimes to understand he will help U.

I took him for 1303 and 1304 and loved him. He's passionate about the subject. There is graded homework and the tests are difficult, but I can now say I love astronomy. He's the best teacher at SAC.
I am a slow learner so when everyone understood I was lost but some people helped me and thanks to God I passed. If you are a slow learner and ask a lot of questions get a teacher that is more patient. He also does not like talking much to his students I don't know why.
He has a very strict method and if you don't show up one day it is a big deal. I somehow think he expects a lot from his students and needs to pay more attention to their needs and trust them more. I have heard he is nice to others but he wasn't that nice to me for awhile because he didn't listen to my concerns. I managed to pass his class though.
Mr. Alaniz is a very good teacher. He has the philosophy that you are the scientist so everything he gives you in the lab is hands on and you learn to figure out things on your own or with the help of your fellow "scientists." He will give you assistance if you need it but he really wants you to learn from doing.
Wonderful professor, super passionate about his students and about his work. He will help you to no end and is awesome about responding to emails. I'm a fast learner, although afraid of the the math and he would always help me. The class is very interesting and gives you a new perspective on our universe. Highly recommend, be prepared to study.
The class is very easy overall, but the math is very confusing. It's like physics math, so unless you like that kind of math you will not struggle. He is very helpful and shows you how to work out the math questions. You only need the book to do homework. He also takes his students hiking and plans events such as seeing the lunar eclipse.
Mr. Alaniz was a great professor. He is very knowledgeable about astronomy his passion. I love this class, taking him again for stars and galaxies ! :) All you got to do is put your effort and listen!
Pretty straight-forward class. 4 test with 1 being dropped and homework assignments with 2 dropped at the end. He definitely wants you to succeed, so he helps your grade tremendously. Only thing is this semester we were so rushed cause of days off due to the school. Didn't learn so well due to quick pace. Very easy though. Definitely take him!
Wonderful professor, super passionate about his students and about his work. he will help you as long as you ask! i was a little afraid of the the math but he would always help me. gives instructions in class for the math too. only con is that he doesn't give a study guide. so use your homework! Highly recommend, be prepared to study!
Print out the powerpoints he post on aces and take them with you to class and do your homework (25%). If you have taken Physics you will do fine on the Math part. If you struggle with the Math or the concepts, he will help you. Just ask him. As long you are not lazy and you work hard like me, you will get an A. Awesome prof!
Have to study plenty, but the material is easy if you're interested. Tests include TF, multiple choice, math, and drawing. Homework is out of the textbook, but there are few questions. Answers are in the book and in your notes. Write down everything he puts on the board. Had a couple of cool demonstrations and he's funny, too. Love his class!
Go to class and do homework and labs. His tests are crazy tough (9 pages), but he curves a ton. Also, you get a "cheat sheet" for each test. If you squeeze all the homework problems on the page, you are guaranteed and A. Lots of homework, but it's not too hard and really helps for the tests. Labs are common sense. Take this prof! Somewhat easy A
Really great teacher really fun and is great at explaining everything! Will be taking his class again 100%
Best professor by far. He truly cares about what his students are learning. He doesn't just teach out of the book like most teachers. He makes the class fun and you actually want to go to class. I took him for Solar Systems lecture and lab. He is lenient on homework and he try's his hardest not to stress anyone out with work. He is really great!
Confused some of the students but did a good job explaining things. Tests were difficult.
This man is absolutely hilarious! Definitely was a hippie back in the day. Truly passionate about astronomy and really wants everyone to learn it. Every chapter has an extensive homework assignment that he really grades. It's easier if you know someone in your class to work on homework with. He has hard tests but likes to curve. Interesting class!
Prof. Alaniz is very enthusiastic in his love of astronomy. I do not believe he teaches that well though he's much more concerned with current events. (which is very interesting) But honestly the material is tough and this class is usually chosen for how easy it SOUNDS. He definitely needs to explain more to get through the h.w.
If you need to take ASTR use Alaniz! GO TO CLASS! ASK FOR HELP! He is a very understanding guy and helps you in anyway he can. His lectures are important but you are going to have to read the textbook as well. Make sure you study! It wasn't easy, I'm absolutely terrible at science, and I got a B in the class. Dude is hilarious too!
He is the best. I took him multiple times for Stars and Solar System he drops the lowest grade for H.W. (which is for every chapter: all in book & some given in class so pay attention) drops lowest Test Grade too. Showing up to class is kinda important, just bcuz some of the drawings will be on test. Easy A if you do all HW with B or higher.
Had a great time in this class. Prof. Alaniz is very clear in his lectures, and breaks things down in an easily understandable way.
if you are not a science major and you hate science SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS FOR JUST YOUR CREDIT BEST TEACHER EVER. I'm a business major and I never had a science in my whole life so I took this class and will take next class with him.
omg.. im not a science major and took this class because i thought it would be easy. NOT! if you are not good at math DO NOT take his class! Hes an awesome teacher but really makes you work for your grade! I would sweat before every test and never made above a 75 on the tests. he goes over the math but not in detail and none of it makes sense.
Astronomy was one of the most difficult class. Good teacher however he acts like we already know what he is talking about. I would recommend him to science majors only. The homework is what saves you!!!
I do not recommend this prof. Take the course online. I like him as a person, but hes not good at teaching. I am great at math, but no. Alaniz will go over the first 3 steps of a scientific math problem and tell you to figure out the rest by yourself for homework. He's extremely confusing in lecture and disorganized. Just read the book.
A good person, really funny. His lectures are all over the place. He will start teaching the chapter and then will go on to another chapter during the same lecture, then come back to the chapter being discussed. Very confusing, he will help you with some homework questions though. Be sure to do your homework!
A good guy. He is understanding if you let him know if you are late on something. however there is math involved and its nothing to what i have learned in math class. He does jump around in chapters and there is homework. Overall an ok teacher though.
Mr. Alaniz makes you work for an A. It will not be given to you. Free trip to the Mcdonald's Observatory & can bring a friend. Lots of math. Do not take this class if you do not want to do your homework, show up to class, and struggle in math. Very interesting class, definitely recommend to those of you that want to learn and have fun.
Best professor ever, Mr. Alaniz loves astronomy, his class is a little bit difficult, but if you read the chapters and pay attention in class, you will succeed with him. He really cares about the student and if you ask for help with the math problem, he will help you. If you want an A, you will have to work for it.
Mr. Alaniz certainly knows the materials and he does his best to break it down so you can understand. However, my one and only problem is there is not enough studying materials. No repetition. You do a lil homework and that's all you have. Nothing to practice with. Math req's practice but you just read and re-read the homework/textbook. Not enough.
Professor Alaniz is an amazing professor. He gives you homework and then he gives you the solutions , then same things come in his exams, how amazing is that? A lot of extra points opportunities. He is very fair grader. Awesome class.
Unless you have a strong base for Algebra and physics, don't take this professor. He is very unorganized in his lectures and will write his notes all over the board with very little organization, and jump all-around to different random topics He makes each test up right before you take it. He is a fair grader, but you have to earn your grade.
Doesn't give reviews for tests you have to hope you have taken good notes and read the chapters thoroughly. I only passed the final because most of the questions were from previous tests and he gives the answers to them beforehand. If you're just taking it for the credit take another class it's interesting information, but hard work.
Professor Alaniz is really nice, but that doesn't mean he isn't a hard professor. I am usually good at every subject but this class was a little too hard. He is very unorganized, he jumps from subject to subject, keeps you late after class to finish the lecture as if you don't have somewhere to be. No reviews for tests. I don't recommend at all.
You just really need to pay attention! I didnt like this class at first because the workload was so heavy, but I finished with an A and he covers all the homework answers in his office hours if you go
I took Prof. Alaniz for ASTR 1303 and 1304 and it was one of my favorite classes of the semester. I feel like being online did a disservice to him because he has a lot of good experiments and examples to give in person. Ask all the questions and he will answer. Most of the tests have to do with the hw as well as the final. Hes also super nice!
He is very understanding about life events and extends homework alot if you ask. Sig figs are important to him. Overall great teacher
Pay attention to his lectures and do the homework, you'll pass. His quizzes and test are hard and doesn't necessarily make sense but if you study it shouldn't be too bad. I think being online only was bad for him, he seems like he would do better in person.
He's a very nice professor, though he does go on a tangent a bit during lecture. I honestly didn't learn anything during his lectures, but that's just me. Labs were a bit weird, be ready to use LoggerPro, labs aren't due until the end of the course. Lowest exam grade gets dropped, as well as homework. 2 Chapters per month. Great Professor!
Professor Alaniz was a great professor to have for Astronomy. If you need anything from him he's quick to get back to you. Most of our tests were curved. As long as you go to class, do your HW and ask for help when you need it, you'll get a good grade.
Professor Alaniz was an awesome professor for physics! I never expected physics to be my best grade, but it ended up being my best. He explains the material well and is helpful when you need help. You get to use a "comfort sheet" on all the exams, which is extremely helpful to reference to. If you understand the HW you will do fine on the exams!
pick anyone else. tough grader, no extra credit, homework helps on tests but is mainly irrelevant. lectures too fast, makes no sense, many off topic tangents. unorganized drops a couple of grades. he is helpful, and understanding at times. labs are weird, strict grader.
He is enthusiastic about his lectures and spends the first half of class showing news. Difficult math is involved in this course, but he assumes we understand and categorizes them as easy math questions. Lectures are long, & all over the place at times, doesn't give many extra credit opportunities, & a lot of homework/quizzes that he looks at.
I had class with Professor Alfred for 1401 and 1402. He has been one of the best professors I have had. He communicates fairly, asks for feedback regularly, and works WITH students. The exams are challenging, but there are so many opportunities to prove yourself. We need more people like Professor Alfred in the world. He really impacted me.
Alaniz is extremely passionate about his subject and it shows. I took the 5 week summer course and it was a lot of daily work, but overall he kept the information interesting and allowed a 10 minute break in the middle of class. He gave demonstrations and kept us up to date on the latest astronomy news.
Professor Alaniz is a bit forgetful, but overall his class is pretty easy. He forgot to grade some homework assignments for weeks, but ended up getting it all done before the end of class. It's unfortunately an online class, so it's fairly hands off, I wish that SAC was still offering this one in person, it would have made it a lot better.
Very good. I took him over the summer for an 8 week course and he was able to explain everything well in the short time frame that we had. He went over the homework during class so we didnt have to at home. The test are exactly like the homework so as long as you study those you'll be ok. He also allows a cheat sheet for the exam
Professor Alaniz's class is a mixed bag - lectures can be disorganized, but he's enthusiastic and helpful if you engage. The math is challenging, but doable with the textbook and tools like Unstuck study. Overall, a rewarding course for astronomy fans.
