What Students Say

Already people dropped, his 2nd test was after the drop deadline. Its like hes talking to himself in class, he is boring. Not too good of a professor. His tests are horrible nothing like the homeworks. I understand all the work and have to study extra har
boring as hell. if it weren't because i had calculus background, i probably would have done worse than i did in the class. takes too much time talking abt stuff not relevant to what's on his tests. one time, he was a half hour late when he gave a test.

He sucks, dont ever take him. He failed 3/4 of my class. He doesnt know how to teach, he teaches like we are all 5 year olds. Tests have nothing to do with lectures. He tells us that we are wrong whenever we question him.
BORING!! Talks very fast.. everything is very unclear. He starts teaching new material 10 minutes before the class ends and keeps you as long as he possibly can. No one in my class is too fond of him. If you have a choice.. DON'T take him!!
he always come late and he never mention stuff in the test. Also he always do overtime....

If you aren't mathematically minded person - don't take him. But if you are, you can learn a lot of extra material which is irrelevant to the current course but very usefull in the future. Don't hope for easy A, have to study all by yourself with this guy
I have to agree with all the things that have been said about him. However, for math majors like me he's probably the best teacher in Baruch. I found his expalnations clearer than the book's ones.
this lecture is too much detail than other professor. if u pay attention on his note and explanation, u will understand quickly. even though he came late and stay late all time, i do believed he is a great professor! Enjoy~
Great professor. made Calc III look much easier than Calc I & II. lectures r great, but i think u really need an interest in mathematics to understand him. he talks a lot about abstract theoretical concpts and really goes off tangent
If you spend a reasonable time for studying, you will do well in his class. In other professors' classes, it was hard for me to get the material no matter how much I studied. Their explanations weren't as detailed as his.
The best professor for advanced math classes
Great professor. On the exams, he lets you stay and continue taking the exam as long as you want.
Unless ur a "magician" dont expect to question him in class. His fairly clear tho and the tests are multiple choice which really help. His FAR better than some other calc. proffessors out there. He gets a little too into teaching calc but he does a good job at it so no complaining there.
Do the HW, and look up things in the textbk if you dont know. He's a good teacher, but he didnt explain everything. He is very enthusiastic about the subject though. The best thing is that he gives lots of time to take the exams.
He is unclear in his explainations. He would probably be a good English Professor and not Mathematics. He needs to manage his time better.
Very good professor. His explanations are very clear.
He is really nice professor. He also offered a free rewiew class. He is extremely helping and answer every question and makes Math interesting. But you have to be very accureate for his exams.
the worst professor i have ever had. unfair tests. the man is too pride to admit when he makes a mistake, and he did!! unfair tests. tricks the students instead of helping them. his tests are much harder than the departmental tests. do your self a favor and avoid this wierd unfair and terrible grader. the guy has no life and he is looking for ways
his lectures are unclear, he spends too much time writing on the board and do very little examples. He comes late to class and lets us out late. His exams are tricky but the good thing is he would spend time reviewing for the final with the students.
Lets make it clear! all the students who complaied in my class that he was bad were lazy ones who do not study anything and expect A. If you are a good student, meaning getting A or B-s TAKE HIM. I got 100 out of 100 on his exams. And believe me I am not a genious. Bottom line, good students take him, bad students you won't get an easy good grade.
He speaks really quickly. Even those who speak english as a first language have difficulty with keeping up with him. He rarely answers questions, most of the time assumes you already know everything. His exams are really trickly and most of the people that were in my class did not pass the final. Don't take him, unless you already know calc.
HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. HE SPEAKS TOO FAST AND DOES NOT EXPLAIN THINGS VERY CLEARLY. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A MATH HONOR STUDENT AND I FAILED HIS CLASS. HE DID NOT EVEN TAKE IN TO CONSIDERATION THE FACT THAT I AT LEAST MADE AN EFFORT IN CLASS. HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
This Professor talks fast, when explaining math concepts. He only does 2-3 problems in class. All he explains is theories of calc and he does a few problems in class and explains in like crazy. He also crams problems when he doesn't have time. But he does take time after class in explaining more about the materal. Comes to class late and ends late
He is the BEST teacher I have had in Baruch. Those guys who say he is bad don't understand anything. He explained so good in the classes that I even did not take any notes the whole semster and got 100s on all my exams. And plus his exams are soooooooo easy. They are all multiple choice. you don't have to show your work at all.
This guy is a fool He talks way to fast comes 10-20mins late, and ends class 10-20mins late ppl end up just walking out his class so he could end the class. 3 tests and one final calculus is hard but he makes it harder even thou he wants to help. think math is the best and everyone must become math lovers I loved math but he made it to a nightmaire
Not a bad teacher. It would be nice if you did have some type of history in Calc before taking him, however. I failed calc before taking him and I felt like he did a good job explaining things I didn't really understand last semester.
I loved Prof. Friedland because he is so passionate about his work. But he speaks fast and gives lots of details, which could be interesting if you like math, but confusing and unneccessary. But test are v.easy.if you know how to do HWs, you'll be ok. take him only if you are good at weeding out the "essence" from a lot of material or u'll beannoye
Amazing professor, extremely clear and understandable. Very interesting lectures but you need to do some homework. Take him if you want to learn math and expand your critical thinking
Boring, so boring
Im taking his class now. im not a good at math but im doing well so far, and test are easy multiple choice and some written work. if you have knowlege of pre-cal i garrantee that you will get an A and at least B. But make sure that you are qualified either pass math test or got B+ in pre-cal. if you are not he forces students to drop his course.
The only reason I passed is because I knew the material from high school. He explained really slow and boring and often shifted off the topic because he assumed we all love math and would like to know some side stuff. To him math is GOD, literary. And he tried to prove that math has answers to everything. Sorry dude, but math is not perfect.
Before this class I really like math. He made it my nighmare. He went so fast that I couldn't keep up with anything. And tests are just awful. This prick expected us to remember every theorem we went over. He is the kind of math freak that sleeps with math, a no-life. That's all he knows. A lost case. And did I mention boring. Extremely. AVOID!!!
This is really not a Math professor. He was teaching hardest English in the world. Very very bad Math Teacher. always comes later and delay class. don't take him. one of the worst professor in Baruch.
Prof. Friedland is math fanatic, but that is why he teaches math, right? I'd rather have a teacher who has passion in what he does.It is more inspiring. He shows respect to his students, helpful to the greatest extent and understanding. It is not easy to get A in his class, but he doesn't make it harder than it should be.Exams MOSTLY multichoice.
One of the worst math professors I have ever had. Too nervous to teach properly, tests were not proportional with the quality of teaching. Mediocre, knows no pedagogy, a waste of time, money, and energy. Made people hate the subject. AVOID for Adv. Calc at all costs. Came late and dismissed the class 15 minutes late! A disgrace for Baruch.
He is a GREAT professor!!! MTH 4010 was a very interesting class. It was a great pleasure to be in his class. MTH 4010 is not an easy class, but the professor do the BEST to explain a material as easy and clear as it is only possible.
Manic in class, fearful out of class-complete hysterical change of disposition.Tests very hard unlike class. Speaks too much too fast. Grades low. Very introverted. He likes math but dislikes people. Only has a master's degree & no doctor & is permanent adjunct instructor whose main function is to push paper for the chairman-not teach.the moodiest
It feels like people who grade him bad don't like math(so they will grade bad any one), because he is good professor. Very clear and helpfull. I had fun in this class. Of course you will need to study beside the class room to do good, but is it smthing you have to do? as far as i know he is one of the best proff. in baruch math department.
Comes in late almost every day and then holds the class an extra 15 minutes after it has already "ended." He speeds through the material, which makes it difficult to keep up. Towards the end of the semester I noticed him starting to write a proof one way and then voiding it, which leads me to believe that he makes some of them up as he goes along.
This guy expects absolute perfection from everyone. There is not partial credit, everything is either right or wrong. He also keeps class for 20-30 minutes past the period. I honestly would not recommend him to anyone because like I said there is no room for error. If you want a stress free semester I would defiantly stay away from this guy.
Actually, there was partial credit. When I got a multiple choice question wrong, he took off 1 point when it's worth 4. He speaks fast when he talks about stuff not related to math. He's a cool guy, straight forward, knows the subject well. He doesn't check hw, and only 3 class exams and 1 final. Final's not multiple choice and I still got an A
2tests(2/3)1final(1/3).The way he teaches is clear, the first test is the hardest because he is really looking for perfection, you have to know the theorems and their applications, proofs can be tricky but you should do well if you study seriously. Overall,I really liked the class but the way he teaches is old school and a bit boring.Opposite of Shaw
Clear in explanations. Expects perfection and precision at everything related or unrelated. Good professor.
It is not the best professor out there. His methods of teaching are questionable, most of the time confusing you rather than helping you. Stay away from him if you want to keep your gpa in tack.
This is the worst math professor EVER!!!! Before I took his class I was going to major in math and I had even gotten a math scholorship but if you take his class he confuses you so much its RIDICULUS!!!! He cant teach, he goes off on way to many tangents ad he grades you entirely on 4 tests whcih would be fine f he taught the material well!!!!1
An easy A if you take notes and understand his lectures. Nothing hard but maybe a little bit boring since u need to take notes in the whole class. But never mind! U can get A very easily!
just awful. my high school teacher taught calculus 10x better than this guy. he confuses the crap out of you. if you like math, after taking this you'll hate it. veryyyy confusing and fails miserably at trying to be funny
By far the worst professor I have come across. His methods of teaching are terrible. He is unclear, has poor management of time, his exams are absolutely nothing like the final, furthermore he will NOT prepare you for the final. Never have I had such a hard time with a math class before.
Took topology with Friedland and got a B+, I'm pretty sure that had I taken the class with someone else, i would've failed. He writes extensively and encourages you to understand, not just solve problems. Barely gives any homework, even if he does, he never checks it. Be prepared to take good notes - "he will write a book", and a really good one :)
If you got this far in math, you should know your stuff. He explained things over and over so everyone understood (sometimes it was boring because he was so slow). The thing I was upset about was that we ran out of time for the last topic and rushed through it, and I did poorly on that test which affected my grade. Not a difficult A. Do the hmwk.
I absolutely agree with 5/26 comment. My major is Mathematics, I approached this level of classes and never got less than A, but he makes this class mostly memorizing definitions. He makes this class super boring.
Disagree with the comment below. Friedland is among the best professors that I've taken so far. By all means not an easy A, but it's not just memorization - if you just listen in class, you notice you only encounter about 8-10 theorems in the semester. Most are from Cal I. The guy below probably missed 10 lectures, as the class was very easy.
Take another Professor or even another course, he will kill your GPA, stay away from him!!
Exams are exactly like homework. If you are lazy but need to pass this class with a good grade, he's your best bet. You can get a B by cramming. If you keep up with the HW, it's an easy, but not free A. His pace was kind of messed up. The first half of the semester was nice and slow, then had to rush to fit all the material in the lectures.
He teaches slowly and reviews a lot--even middle school math--which will either bore you to tears or save your grade depending on what type of student you are. His tests have simple problems from the HW and he lists all the topics on them beforehand, so if you understand the HW, it should be a relatively easy, stress-free A.
Prof Friedland is one of the best math professors I have ever had. The exams are exactly what we did for homework and in-class, and if you study they're not hard at all. Lectures are very coherent and in-depth, although he does go off many tangents. Very helpful and happy to answer any questions no matter how specific. Take him if you love math.
Need to say that the concepts sometimes are not that easy to understand, the reason for people saying the lecture is boring is that they probably do not understand the content during the class, and just busy copying down the notes on board. He actually explains everything very well, and the exam is just the things he talked abt on class. No tricks
He'll teach you more english than math (which is annoying). He really crams at the end of the semester (like 12 massive chapter parts in 1 week). In general he's quite a lazy professor (he won't give quiz's cause he doesn't want to grade them etc.) Since when is showing your math work not asked for (this means you don't really get e.c) Try to avd.
This professor teaches so slowly and keeps repeat the same things over and over again. It is as if he thinks we're little kids. This is good for people who want a light introduction to math or don't like doing calculations. His exams are mostly trivial questions and definitions so remember those and you should get a good grade.
crams everything at the end in the course of 3 weeks you will have to study for 3 tests smh, but the work is not too bad just study the hws
GPA KILLER- he doesn't give partial credit on his exams, doesn't curve, and genuinely does not care if he fails you.. avoid.
WARNING!!, I have taken approx 14 math classes and I can say that Friedland is the worst teacher of math in Baruch: He spent 30% of time talking nonsense then he rush the material, he makes a lot of mistakes and confuse himself and students, harsh grader, takes points off for grammar spelling, if you write too much or too little, etc. Terrible guy!
wow what a joke! worst teacher at the math dpt. He doesn't know how to explain the material but expect from you perfection in exams. He takes point off for everything: grammar, dates, if you write on back of paper and you don't tell him, etc. awful experience. I took him knowing he was bad because of my schedule but did not image he was this bad!!!
He always goes over the allotted time, there isnt a grading criteria, so you never know what youre grade is. He always rushes material towards the end of the period but talks about nonsense during the beginning. 4 exams including final, there is homework but he never collects them. On exams, if your answer isnt EXACTLY like he taught it, its wrong.
Professor Friedland is a WONDERFUL teacher. All you need to do is pay attention in every class and you can get an A. He cares about his students. Explains everything clearly. The courses he teaches are generally not so simple so it is not an easy A but if you are taking these courses you should be ready to put in at least this much effort anyway.
In some other math classes, there is lots of room for error, you come up with creative proofs, trying to figure out what you can. I came into the first exam of this class with that mindset and... it ended very poorly. Once you understand that you must follow the _same_ proofs, methods, and definitions he gives during his lectures, you will do well.
Grades are based only off 3 tests and the final. Make sure to take good notes and have the ability to do everything he did in class by yourself and you'll do fine. He keeps the class usually 10-15 min after class is over to finish a proof (sometimes even starting something else after class should be over). For that alone I wouldn't take him again.
I would take Friedland as a last option now, terrible guy overall.
horrendous teaching style, his writing is mostly unintelligible on the board, then he stand in front of what he writes, don't answer questions asked to him, gets confused easily with "complex" questions,as a result he leaves many doubts among students,if you present a solution different than what he knows and don't understand it then is incorrect AVOID
3 Test. 1 Final. Everything based of lectures, homework was kinda useless imo. Basically an dead class where you read off the board, write and memorize everything he writes on board and write it on tests. Very bad pacing slow beginnings, rushes last topics. Keep you overtime even 20+ minutes some days. No curves. Strict grading on tests. Don't take
Worst prof. Everr!!! I really regret not dropping his class as soon as I walked in. All about memorizing for sure. I'll tell you run!!!
One of the most unorganized classes Ive taken in my life. No syllabus, no exam dates. 100% of our grade was based off exams. Professor announced 3 exams in December. Dont take this class if you wanna save your gpa. He doesnt curve and sucks at teaching.
He couldn't care less about students, half of the class dropped and Baruch loves him for this. No curve tests, no HW, no participation grades, he doesn't care at all. His grading system is very harsh and he will remove points for everything. All my answers were half graded, even when the answer was correct, but "Not well proved" according to him.
This is by far the most unorganized class I've taken in my life. No syllabus, no notes to access until the day before the exams. All three exams for the semester were all during the LAST THREE DAYS OF CLASS. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This man is very old and unable to adapt to online learning. He is a mediocre professor at best when explaining.
Do not take him. He does not go over the homework, the homework is the entire class. It is extremely challenging.
AVOID AT ALL COST. One of the most unorganized professors I have taken, spends half the time talking about unrelated stuff and then makes lectures longer because he is behind ( one time until 8:00pm when class ends at 7:05pm), the midterms are rushed and you will NOT learn, if you study independently he will consider it as cheating, just a mess.
Professor Friedland gives HW, but doesn't grade it. His tests are the only determiners of your grade -- they are not difficult if you read over the HW and read his solutions. You will not get an A in the midterms by just reading lecture notes, you must follow the way he answers HW questions. You will not get an A by using Chegg. You must study HW.
Took him based on the previous reviews and didnt think he would be too bad but honestly the most boring monotone professor Ive ever had. He talks about nonsense for the first half hour of every class which isnt interesting or in any bit helpful. Also, the class is solely based on exams!! I would avoid him at ALL costs!
His age is getting to him
Please save yourself and DO NOT take his class. His lectures are not understandable and his handwriting is terrible. He seems nice, but very disorganized and slow at teaching. The class is constantly falling behind in terms of lectures and he would put stuff that we didn't get to learn on the exam. I actually cried many times out of frustration.
This professor is the worst one that I've ever met at Baruch, he doesn't grade anything else except test and each test is 33%, only 2 midterms and 1 final. Avoid this guy at all costs. If you guys want to learn number theory better take Mth 4000 or 3150 because there is more to learn in those classes than this one.
The worst Professor I've ever experienced
