Social issues, weird man, always late, but an esay grader
He is #1 Weird, #2 Hard, #3 Boring #4 unclear in what you are expected of #5 expects you to know everything and wont explain it to you.....I would never recommend this teacher to anyone, that would just be wrong.
I slept in his class, i only had 2 papers, everything else was cake, whoever wrote before me must've been an a$$ to him!
I don't really like the class, he is weird and I think it is hard. I hate how all we do is just read from the books. I wouldn't take him again.
This guy is just awesome. He makes you think very critically. Easy grader.
At first didnt like the class.. thought he was all over the place.. but then realized its pretty easy and hes a pretty cool guy too... only 2 five page papers with little to no research and two exams... he gives you whats on the exams beforhand too.

I hate this class. It is the worst class ever. All we do is read from the stupid book and its just so boring. And the final, ha what a joke, it was soo hard! Definitely would not reccommend his class.
confusing and class is unclear at first, but once you get into it, the class is very easy. the midterm and final are pretty easy and he is an easy grader. you learn a lot.
Had him for Social Issues about 3 years ago. Class was tedious, but informative. Just take good notes and STUDY what and when he tells you. Papers are not not difficult, just time-consuming
Excellent professor. Papers were super easy to do and reading wasn't really bad either. Watched 2 films and had to critique. Learned a lot. Was helpful information also taught in sociology and psychology.

I have come to know this class as the Hate Whitey class. Keeps you until the last minute. The readings suck and he is monotone. The midterm lasts a whole 3 hours and overall the class sucks. The only good part is how easy he grades.
Very funny man (watch out he will make you look like a clown). Can be kinda boring but he shows films likes to here jokes and talks to the class. Not a lot of notes (Look for key words) to take just pay attention and do some reading. His papers are okay.

If you have to take social issues, take it with him. I had someone else for it too and I failed. The assigments were tedious, but easy. he's a riot, and will help you with anything. Classes are long, but the work is easy.
never heard of being failed because of not being registered to vote, but that's A.E.P. for you. easy grader if you prove you can vote. work was tedious, didn't do it. papers were easy, did them, got c's on the two tests. overall grade:b+.
Look, his class is dead boring. the entire class you read. that is the entire class. he assigns alot of papers.. i did about 3 out of 10 of them. Very strict on attendence. overall i got a B. if ur gonna goof off just make sure you talk alot in class.
Overall fairly easy class...but he assigns soooo much reading and expects you to do it yet no one does. Also you never know when to take him seriously. And its boring beyond belief.
i don't think he is an easy teacher but you learn a lot in his class. just do the readings and write the papers and participate in his class and you'll get a good grade. i got an A in the class and i missed one of his papers.
horrible, i cant take this class at all it is SO boring, he assigns WAY TO MUCH reading and no one does the readings anyway. And you never ever know if he is serious or not. Do not take his class.

I LOVE Prettyman. I do agree his class is painfully boring because it's more than 3 hours long and he does assign insane amounts of reading but no one does it anyway so who cares? However if you participate alot in class he'll love you. he's so cute! He's funny and knows his stuff.
Well .. its a 3 1/2 hour night class & he goes down to the last minute. Hes an easy grader, though, and hes pretty funny. Hes just a little too sarcastic - and thats coming from an avid user of sarcasm. Oh, & dont worry. He wont REALLY make you memorize the 1st paragraph of the Dec of Independence.
I agree with most of you, boring class became a gossip group for everyone, even the guys joined in the drama, but prettyman likes to watch everyone interact, it gave me an "A" gossipping never paid off so well. Long but deal with it, you'll understand in the end.
Hes a very funny guy, assigns ALOT of reading, but you dont really have to do it. The papers are easy, the midterm was CRAZY hard, but overall it's a pretty easy class. VERY boring though. He definitely does keep you until the very last minute of class.
Can never tell when he's serious or not. Assigns a ton of reading, but it doesn't matter because we just analyze it in class. Doesn't teach anything, but is an easy grader. No tests and only two papers which are easy because you basically write whatever the hell you think. Midterm was hard, tho.
He is a very nice man but I want to hang myself in his class. He assigns 100's of pages to read every week, but no one does it. He grades papers easily & the midterm wasn't too bad. He comes to class 14 minutes late & never lets you out early. He combs his mane with a lil brush & sounds like Mufasa
Very boring but easy class. You always get an A on papers, but the exams are tough. You don't have to do the readings because you'll do them in class anyway. Here's the thing. He wants people to talk in his class. That's why reading analysis is so long. So don't feel bad, just show up and talk.
Wow, this guy is terrible. He wears some funny clothes, with a funny hat, and has one of those stupid bags with the wheels on them, so while you're sitting in class you can hear him from a mile away. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, IF YOU DO PICK A DIFFERENT TEACHER.
A lot of reading (just skim over it before class because you will go over everything in group discussions) He is an easy grader when it comes to papers, but the Midterm is HARD and the final is just going to be harder. I havent really gotten as much out of the course as I thought. Dont take him.
All we did was review the readings we were assigned to read for h.w. We broke into groups and discussed the key points of the articles (which were boooooooooring) and was pretty much a reading comprehension course. The midterm and final were tough. Avoid him if possible, unless you like being bored.
Get out of his clas. I dropped it and it was one of the best things ive ever done. So boring unless ur one of the 5 nerds that talk the whole class about crap no one else will understand.

Prettyman is cool! He loves all the current news and is a news junkie. He wrote the main book you will study so you cant bs thru class! You will learn things that will give you a solid foundation if you plan on doing anything significant with your life. You will learn what your role is in society.
I don't understand what ANYONE is talking about he gives you everything on the midterm and final...all you have to do is study what he gives you. I don't get why that's hard. All he really wants is for you to participate in class..if you can't speak then don't take this course with him.
This man has the weirdest sense of humor and is overconcerned with current events. I felt like I was taking a politcal science class. He is extremely boring and sitting through the class is hell. He wears a fishing vest, and sneakers, and he rolls his backpack down the hall everyday before class.

Prettyman is one of the best professors I've ever had.He tells you what is going to be on the midterm and final along with half of the points being take home essays. All he asks is that people participate in his class to discuss current events.Definitely recommend him to everyone.
An awesome teacher and a really good guy with a great sense of humor! A much needed class that gives you a solid foundation for your major. To bad mouth this man for anything only further proves your own ignorance kids. Get with it!!!

This man tries to mess with your mind. He has lied to my classmates and I not only on what would be covered on the midterm but with everything else in class. He doesn't explain what he wants done with his papers, and just puts everything out there as if we are mind readers and can tell what he wants. Lots of readings. Class takes full 3 1/2 hours.
There's lots of readings but not everyone does them and you break into groups to summarize the readings which is cool. His paper was easy - not very specific. If you pay attention to the main phrases in the readings and can relate them to real life experiences you will do fine. Easy class and interesting as well.
A brilliant man who provokes thought which will stay with you for life.I have him now.However,he is a bit unclear sometimes, and the material can be very challenging- sometimes unrealistic.The amount of reading and writing done is enormous. A very kind man who shows genuine interest in getting to know his students. All he wants is conversation in class and for his students to show an interest in current issues. If you listen to NPR on the way to school, you'll have something to talk about and you'll get an A!
Participation is important, 30%. Two papers and everyone gets an A. Midterm and Final are impossible at least three hours long. Very unclear about what is on them. Class always goes the entire time and is VERY boring. A lot of group discussion of pointless readings. Overall an easy B if you can stay awake.
Really boring.. Although he is a nice guy, not everything is clear. He had to whole class wondering what the hell was going on 50 percent of the time. Very Misleading.. couldnt wait untill class ended, still cant.

I guess he changed everything about his courses because social issues was the easiest class ever. Everyone gets A's on the papers, class participation (30%) is so easy, and the midterm and final and gives you the 10 questions on it and tells you exactly what to study. Very easy class if you actually try a little or only before the MT & final
Social Issues was not the easiest class in the world because it challenges you to think outside the box. YES you have to do ALL the reading, yes you will break up into groups and most of class will be about the readings! Thats his teaching style and if you go into it with an open mind you will get an A! Lots of reading. Breaks everyone into groups every class to discuss the readings. Play smart and SPLIT the reading you are assigned, because NO ONE reads them beforehand. Do not try to skim 20-50 pages by yourself, split it with your gorup. Tests are EASY, he GIVES YOU THE QUESTIONS. You have to be a complete moron to fail those.
Bland, boring, and monotone. Uninspiring. Very little discussion of actual current social issues. Like a horrible, irrelevant history class instead. ALOT of reading. Biased grader. Don't take his social issues class, if you already registered drop it immediately. Read almost a hundred pages a night and don't go over them in class, totally useless and barely pertain to the class at all, boring as hell, papers get graded harshly. Don't get me wrong, he can be nice and kinda funny at times , but his class is impossible. Stayaway
This guy wrote the textbook for the class, you know he's brilliant!
I had mixed feelings about this guy. At first he seems cool, but he gives a LOT of readings to do within a span of a week and you'll fall behind. On the plus, he gives you questions for midterm and final in advance, and the papers are all personal experience and relivance. Show up, do the work, and sometimes particiapte and you'll do fine.
This class was ok, prof is funny... LOTS of readings to do, some discussed in class. Yes, midterm was not too easy: take home essay and lots of writing in class, no mult. choice. If you come to class regularly and participate and write good papers (about 5 for semester) and try to understand all he says in class then you should get As/Bs
Nice guy but kind of weird. He wears a hunting vest, has a deep but monotonous voice, and likes to mispronounce words for fun. He doesn't teach the material; instead he just gives a LOT of readings. But fortunately, he's an easy grader, his papers are easy, and he DOES give you test questions beforehand.
Ok you below... he did not WRITE the book, just compiled many essays of different authors and put his name on it :) Overall this prof is eccentric, knows much but does not give up his knowledge voluntarily lol. But come to class, participate, write good papers, study questions that he gives before exam and you'll get a good grade.
Be prepared for a lot of reading!The whole class is spent breaking into groups and going over the readings. Gives questions that will be on midterm and final, one week before each exam. Had him for social issues class. A really nice funny guy who did not give too much work and graded the papers very leniently. Some points of the class very very boring. Def. take him if you can.
He knows his stuff but unfortunately does nothing to share it. Instead of talking about social issues, he drones on and on about aspects of cultures from hundreds of years ago. Real social issues (gender, race, etc.) are relegated to dry readings from his texts. On top of that, he's really quirky, but expects you to read his mind about assignments.
great, funny guy. you really dont have to do the readings..most people dont..gives you questions for tests before hand..however midterm and final were extremely long. reading the readings always helped me however..overall hes a great guy whose class can manage to get a little boring..easy grader i would definitely suggest him

absolutely the worst professor ever. Came late every single class and did not apologize once. I had no idea what he was trying to get out of the class. He lectured at the class and did a horrible job initiating class discussions. Tests were given on the overhead projector and asked for details that you would have had to hunt for in the reading.
Never take him. Has to be the worst professor I had while I was in school. He talks but you can't understand a word he is saying because he goes so quick. I learned nothing from his class and his teaching methods are the worst. Ramapo needs to think twice about this guy. Everyone I know warned me about him. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best thing I can tell you about this guy is to stay away. There are other professors that teach this class and you will most likely get more out of the class with them.

For an intro class he requires a TON of writing for papers, minimum is 5 pages, and the midterm took up a full 3 hours, and we didn't even finish the entire thing.
Prof Prettyman assigns a lot of readings that you should read or else you will look foolish in front of the entire class..It is a heavy work load coarse but he is a very fair grader. Ask questions because he can be vague...I liked the class.
Lectures with biased ideas and will not accept views other than his own. Does not make valid points in his arguments. Always keeps classes till the end or LATER. Not reccomended
People come down hard on this guy, but he's not that bad. I hated the class at first because he can be boring, he keeps you forever, and he's very vague about directions. But in his defense, he is an easy grader and he does try to get to know each of his students. Besides, after some of the people I have taken here, this guy looks like a saint.
Prettyman isnt too bad. he gave a lot of reading and a lot of work for a 100 level class, but he is an easy grader. his classes were okay, he didnt just lecture the whole time..but he is kind of boring. the subject matter was somewhat interesting too.
His Midterm and Finals are redic,however he does gives you the questions, but there are so many it's hard to remember everything! You really dont have to read because you do his articles analysis in class,participation is a must (well at least it was for me) Got a C+ on midterm, Dont know about the Final. The class is BORING. However, it mainly involves going over readings in groups. He requires a lot of reading, but I didn't read at all. Couple of opinion papers, midterm, final. He gives you a study guide, if you fill it out properly youll get an A

History of Social Thought: BEWARE! he is extremely boring. He gives a ridiculous amount of homework each week which he doesn't college, he just rereads and goes over in class. His midterm was ridiculous. he didn't even hand out a test! it was given on a overhead projector! avoid him if possible!

Run away! Boring, doesn't explain the material that well and when it comes time for the exam you never feel prepared. If you ask him to explain something he just rewords what he said before. He tries to sound smarter than he is. Overall, just aviod at all costs.

He doesn't explain well and expects you to already know what he is thinking. If you take him make sure you pay attention to every word and you might just make it! This class is way too much work with almost little to no payoff in the end. Grading is very unfair, with 30% being class participation, 2 papers worth 20% each, and 25% midterm and final. Its either do or die, Like i said before, way much work for a 101 level class. good person, but honestly, AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!

Too much work. His midterm, research paper and final are impossible, but he gives 2 other papers which are easy. Class is boring, lots of group work and participation is 30%!!! He acts as if his class was the only one and assigns readings of 50-80 pages every week. Funny at times but you end up not knowing when he is serious! I would not recommend
I took him for both SI and HST by choice. He's amazing and loves to challenge his students' sense of awareness. If you are able to "get over yourself" and just stop taking him so seriously, your semester will be easy. Easy grader. He does way heavily on participation. If you are a quiet person, I don't recommend you take this class.
I definitely wouldn't recommend taking him. He is really unclear on what he expects from the students (sometimes on purpose). He also gives a ridiculous amount of reading each week. He is intelligent and makes valid points, but the class is not worth it.
He's a good guy. Just gives too much work out. I stopped reading those things. It's too much. I got a B- on the midterm, which he gave the questions to you ahead of time. If you want to be challenged, take it, but it is a gen ed so I'd take someone else.
Do not take this class, it is very boring, very difficult for NO reason.He gives heavy reading assignments and deep questions that are difficult to answer.He never actually explains the readings so you feel helpless and stupid. Tests are insane also.

Terrible teacher. He does not follow the syllabus at all and top of that if you ask for clarification he would rather not help with that. He tries to make his class really hard when in reality it should be easy since its a GenEd. He also has a bad sense of humor which is dry sarcasm. On top of that the subject is rather dull. Sarcastic (sometimes entertaining), never clear on what he wants out of an assignment, not very helpful, highly opinionated(on the gov&his values), but once you get a hang of the work its not terrible. Midterm was killer, I would not reccomend him. This is a gened and he tries really hard to make it difficult...even though it really isnt. fishvest.
He is an amazing guy with an awesome life story. Our class really got to know him and in the end loved him. Yes he gave a lot of work but it was to challenge us and help us get ready for our college transition. Just do the readings and you'll be fine. He's a brilliant professor love him !!!

He pushed back our midterm bc we asked him to (the day of). He puzzles me frequently. Kinda funny. Good guy, loves messing w/people. Responsive over email, not clear in class. Acts mean,kinda isn't. If you feel like taking a challenging genEd go for it...just don't expect an easy A.
Try Not to take him. Class is miserable. Way too much reading. Studied my but off in order to get an A just for a gen ed. Tons of readings, only are referenced in class half the time. He is a rude guy and the class is miserable.

I absolutely LOVE him. Yes, he doesn't explain certain things very much but if you just use the sources he gives you and quote/cite them correctly, he will love you. He loved my writing and enjoyed that I used the sources he gave me so those were easy A's. His midterm was super easy and the final is a take home, super easy.
This guy wants you to fail. He gives obscure last minute assignments and lectures just by reading off a piece of paper for 3 hours. Also he doesnt make copies so you have to take 3-5 pages of notes per class LITERALLY copying down the worksheets he could simply photo copy. Also he is constantly late to class without notice. Sometimes 45 minutes.

He is the best professor I have ever had. He changed the way I viewed everything. He has an amazing life story and he is always willing to help you. He is amazing and he is very funny. I had him for two hours every day and time flew by. I loved his class. It is a lot of work but I was very happy to do it. I love him.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. he might assign a lot of readings but the readings are so easy. the two films that we had to watch were super interesting too. he gives you all the questions on the final as well it's impossible to fail this course. he's also hilarious! and has a great background, just google him. once again, BEST PROFESSOR EVER.
Prof. Prettyman is AMAZING! Those who dislike his class simply do not pay attention. His grading is lenient, he even brought my class cookies! TAKE HIS CLASS! the content is extremely interesting and he loves making jokes. BE AWARE HE IS ALWAYS SARCASTIC! great professor take him or you will be missing out. Very knowledgable in his field. love him!
This class was not easy for me until I got help. He is a great teacher but very confusing at times. This class did improve me as a person. Simply to say, if I had to do this again I would. Plus I was determined to get on his good side. :)
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! way too much work for a gen-ed. He barely talks about "social issues" and discusses government all the time. He is a nice guy, but there are a lot of other professors who teach social issues that are easier. Final and midterm were two class periods, or 6 hours long. A TON of textbook readings which you only see on the 2 exams
Does not make copies of his notes that he already has in handout from but rather spends most of the class time having students copy down stuff while he remains silent. Super boring
Assigns loads of papers, but such an easy grader. He puts you in groups every class and goes over readings. You can pretty much skate by doing the papers and skimming the readings, but when it comes time for the midterm and finals you better know your vocabulary other part is a film analysis, not bad.
I took a 3 hour Social Issues class with Pr. Prettyman. There is a lot of reading and writing. It was my hardest class of the semester by far. That being said, if you show him that you're listening and are engaged then you'll be fine. Although his workload is difficult, he grades easily. In retrospect, this class was manageable.
He does not hand anything out you have to write everything down. Half of the class is spent in groups going over an overly complicated reading while he sits silently. The other half of the class he quietly lectures and you must take notes on it. You do not get a copy of the midterm or final he puts the exam on a projector. He is late to every class
I was a freshman and was given my schedule. This class was once a week for three hours and the worst time ever. I will never take him again. No clarity with assignments and a tough grader. I truly tried in his class. You have to do the reading and listen to his long boring lectures in class. The midterm and final were very difficult.
Participation matters, but he prefers quality over quantity. You can get away with limited participation if you make sure to answer insightfully. He assigns A LOT of reading, but don't waste your time with it if it doesn't require an essay. Instead, get a general understanding of what is being argued and form an opinion to share with the class.
His homework assignments usually depend on his mood. Better mood less homework. There's going to be a lot of reading, so make sure you understand everything he assigns. Vocabulary is important.
He's such a likable guy as a person, which makes it hard to say anything bad about him. However, he can be unclear with assignments and things can get a little muddy. He also makes you feel dumb for asking for clarification on assignments so it can be challenging. He's really funny though, so it makes time pass quickly.
The guy is definitely not likeable. The exams were ridiculously long consisting of 4 parts including a film review --all handwritten. He also assigns readings every class to discuss. So be prepared and actually read the book. He also assigns a ton of essay to analyze with a strict rubric. Not a fun guy and not a fun class. Avoid.
I developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from his exams. I purposely write like a doctor just so he can't read my BS.
Easy grader. Doesn't tell you what he wants for assignments, takes forever to hand back, thought I failed everything and ended up with all A's. NO CELL PHONES IN CLASS. No laptops. Attendance in mandatory. At least skim the reading and do the HW questions, can fill in the rest in class. Long lectures. Lots of handwriting. Long exams.
I had him during the summer and it was interesting. He can get a little irritating at times but overall, sweet man. He definitely knows what he is teaching and wants everyone to learn. He is a very easy grader. Assignments can be hard to understand sometimes but do not be afraid to ask for extensions or help, he'll give it to you.
Prettyman is an amazing professor . Honestly those who complain about this class expected it to not be a college course. He's a really easy grader and super funny. There are a lot of reading and writing assignments but they're not extremely difficult. You can tell he's really passionate about what he teaches. Always clears up unclear assignments!
Dear future EOF Students: Prettyman will have you up all night in the summer, RIP. But trust me, you learn so much about racial, gender, and economic injustice which I learned is real important. You'll hate, but love him, get ready for some big laughs!
Professor Prettyman was a pretty bad professor. Very unclear with the work to be done, and very unclear syllabus and grading style. Most of the work assigned wasn't on the syllabus. He made it hard to follow and understand. I wouldn't even consider his class an easy A, because he was so unclear that I felt that I had to re-read most of the topics.
Seems kind of stoic and intimidating at first, but he does have a sense of humor he shows every once in a while. The assignments are more difficult than avg, but look harder than they actually are. Usually grades fairly, although he is unspecific at times when giving instructions. He is old and knows a LOT of stuff (a really intelligent professor).
He is a really great guy with a sense of humor. Be ready to work, there are many readings and papers assigned. If you do all the work and actually participate in discussions, you will pass with flying colors. He is passionate about what he does and is always looking out to help his students.

This professor was definitely intimidating at first but once you get to know him he's very down to earth and very nice. Tons of assignments but plenty of time to complete them. Definitely one of my favorite professors!
He is extremely boring but not too bad. You will have a ton of work and have to speak in front of the class in a group. Also many videos and a lot of reading. You will think you are failing and then end up with an A. The final was excessive but as long as you study, you should be fine.
he is so knowledgeable. the class is so boring, his voice is kind of monotone, and he makes you handwrite notes instead of giving a hard copy. but above all, this man is so intelligent, has a huge heart, is available for assistance, and wants everyone to pass. you need to put in hard work to get a good grade. i did much better than i thought
Great professor and very knowledgable. He is honestly very caring and wants everyone to learn. You have to read in order to pass. But overall, thought I would fail the course and ended up doing very well. He is very intelligent and will open your eyes so much to all the issues going on in the world.
Must do assigned readings for group presentations in EVERY CLASS. Groups are chosen based on who you sit next to so choose your seat carefully. He uses those presentations to teach instead of lecturing himself, which is very annoying if the students are wrong about topics they don't know. Play it safe, teach yourself & take good notes from book.
Prettyman is a great professor but the class is not an easy A. There is a heavy amount of readings to do each week but the readings are amazing. His lectures can be dense but if the class participates it makes the class more enjoyable. If you dont like the topic, you may not like the class honestly.
Although he assigns a lot of readings and short papers, he is still a good professor to take. He's funny, and you will do well if you participate by sharing your thoughts on the topics discussed.
A great professor! But be ready to work (participate, pay attention in class, read and analyze) I never wrote so many papers in my life but his feedback and the amount of work load made me a stronger writer. He is a very nice professor but you need to ask him questions or you wont fully understand the assignment.

In the beginning of his class, I use to dread it so much. I had never had to write so much for a class. After a few weeks, I noticed that he really does care about his students and he wants you to pass. He is the sweetest old man with his fishing vest. Always participate in the discussion. He also gives good feedback and betters your writing skill

The most dedicated and genuine professor I've met thus far. He is very thorough and takes the time to incorporate current events and other happenings in culture with each lecture. Brings a smile to my face every time I see him on or off campus.
Prettyman is a really funny old man. He assigns a lot of reading, and the midterm and final are average. Just do the reading or at least have some idea of what is going on. A lot of participation required that is mostly common sense. Just have an opinion. Also, get to know the kids around you. If you put in the effort, he will give you the A.

I think because of our classes being online. He had a hard time trying to figure out how to use Webex. He also never made his assignments very clear. But he genuinely has good intentions. Im sure in person would have been more interesting. Just so the readings and take notes. Youre good. Hes pretty lenient with late assignments too.

Everyone complains about Prettyman, but it's mostly students who do not want to get the work done! He is genuinely a caring professor, and if you put in the effort, you will get an A.
The one professor to truly prepare me for the real expectations of college. His class is tough and a lot of work, but never unmanageable. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. It was tough at times, but it was a good experience. I enjoyed the class and it made me become a better writer and more prepared for the future.
Be prepared to sit in class and read A LOT. Doesn't really reply to emails and in the beginning he would be really late to class and this was online. Don't suggest taking a course of his online.
unfortunately you have to take this class as an elementary major. He "lectures" and no one has any idea what he is referring to. Never clear, never engaging. Assigns work with very little or unclear directions. Talks and talks, but I never seem to learn anything. A joke.
It was not a very easy class, but he is such a sweet man and is very understanding. If you need extra time on an assignment, he will give it. Some of these reviews are from people who barely paid attention. As long as you do the readings and assignments it is not that bad. He also loves to throw in-jokes and do little "pranks" that made me smile.
I'm hoping that Alfred Prettyman will be the worst prof I ever have. Not only was he unresponsive to emails, his directions for assignments were unclear, and he made the class environment a living hell. He does not disclose grades for assignments until the end of the semester AFTER taking the final. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS CLASS TO ANYONE.
At his core, he is a nice old man who is wise and lighthearted, even threw in some jokes here and there, that really got the class riled up. The work load is more than manageable and I did the bare minimum and still did A grade good in the class. Sure there is a good amount of readings but its not bad at all. You'll find it to be like high school.
I failed his class, i didn't really go he was a pretty fun professor however. If you have another option id take them, but he isn't the worst.
Prettyman's teaching style may not please everyone. He does not use powerpoints. Instead he talks and expects you to write down what he says and know it for the midterm/finals. He assigns readings and questions from the textbook. There are not many graded assignments besides the midterm, final, and attendance.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. NO PowerPoint or notes to take home. He just talks. No use of Canvas, extremely disorganized, doesn't reply to emails, not tech savvy in any way. Always mention the importance of attendance and being on time but walk into class late continuously. Unbelievably confusing lessons, no mercy for late work.
Nice man but not a great professor. Too much work and makes you read textbook when you don't even need it for final. If you work hard, you will receive an A.
He is very passionate, to really enjoy the class you defiantly need to participate. He has a lot of knowledge and experience. Some times when he lectures it not very clear. There is not a lot of homework. The biggest assignment was a research paper.
You really need to pay attention in this class to know what is going on, it does not go according to the syllabus but as long as you read the readings and take notes during class you should do fine

I had to drop out after seeing how his class was set up. He's a nice man but his teaching style is very outdated. No use of email or Canvas at all. All of the assignments and their info were written on the syllabus. A lot of papers; he already assigned us a report due second day of class. Had to be hand-written. Takes a long time to get to class.
Although he is a old soul, he was one of the worst professors I ever had. He was the most old school professor I ever had not even using Canvas or emails due to him being 88 YEARS OLD. I suggest not taking this class if you want to keep your sanity intact.
Prettyman's class is challenging but rewarding. Stay on top of readings, take good notes, and use unstuckstudy to ace the assignments. He cares about student success - put in the work and you'll do well.
