took him for ENC 1101, ENC 1102, and some writing class. Easy grader, cuts some slack, Teaches good and knows his stuff.
excellent teacher. helps a lot
Easy grader, cuts a lot of slack. Took his "Literary Analysis" in the Fall of '02, and he was by far my favorite professor of the term. Go Alf!
Best teacher ever, super cool and nice. Need to read but helps you understand. makes poetry fun!! sort of lol
Excellent professor! Knows what he is talking about and is a good grader. Although you have to read and analyze poems, if you attend classes and hear his analyses, you will do fine.
Great professor! He is very helpful and down to earth.
BEst teacher ever! interesting very helpfull down to earth..fair grader.
It was one of the most relaxing classes that I've ever took
Alf is the man! I took his 1101/1102 classes 3 years ago and he was a very cool professor. He's very friendly and loves discussion in class. Grades fairly easy and will give you a fair or generous grade.
GREAT TEACHER KNOWS HIS STUFF AND VERY HELPFUL
Just write your essays and do what he says to fix it and you will get an A no problem. Show up to class, do what he says, and you WILL pass. Great professor, TAKE HIS CLASS.
very good teacher, do as he says, you will learn and pass the class.
really easy, highly reccomended
PROF SOTO IS A REALLY NICE GUY..HE IS KIND OF BORING CUZ ALL U DO IS READ STORIES AND HE GOES OVER THEM THE NEXT CLASS BUT HIS ESSAYS ARENT HARD EITHER. HE ONLY HAS A FEW IN CLASS ASSIGNMENTS AND THATS IT. I RECOMMEND THE CLASS.
Professor Soto is an extremely good teacher as well as a nice human being. There were only 4 major essays in the class which basically determined your grade. There is homework but it is nothing to sweat over. You have a chance to re-write all your papers. Take his suggestions and you will do well.
Really good teacher. He knows whats he talking about. Just make the corrections for your essays & u should be fine. Nice guy!
Very good professor!! He's very smart....and good-looking too, =)
Very cool teacher, take him.
a good teacher but just could never understand what is it that he wants on his papers. you think you wrote a good but he wants something different.
I extremely recomend him. A really understandable teacher. He likes to make jokes in the classroom and that wakes students attention. Just make sure you write what he is asking for and don't go off topic. Take him without thinking.
Very good teacher. He makes it clear what it wants on papers and allows time for more drafts. He gives jokes which keeps you awake. Do your essays and you'll pass
easy professor, but boring assignments. he grades kind of fair, but he can be a little tough sometimes. but overall a good professor. i recommend his class.
soto was ok i thought he would be easier but i had some trouble with the essays since i didn't know what he wnated. but he was funny guy. and ok teacher
The book is a must. Also do all of the assigned HW as he either collects it, or will be come part of the portfolio that must be turned in at the end of the class. Class is composed of 4 essays , which I thought were not to difficult to write. I would definetly recommend prof. Soto to ENC 1101/1102 students.
I took Prof. Soto for 1102 and he kept my attention; it was an 8am class. He's funny and grades fairly. If you're confused on the essay questions, you can always approach him. I suggest attending class and completing all assignments when due because at the end of the semester, you'll need them for your portfolio. Highly recommended
Soto was a nice guy. His essays were harder than expected. Had to conform to his style in order to get the grades i wanted. Acts like you have options for your essay topic but then restricts you. Overall an okay class.
Great professor. He's funny and keeps you interesting in the class. Need the text book. He grades fairly, just do the essays, have them proof read and you'll be fine.
Cool prof., very funny and fair. Only 4 papers, and the topics are fairly interesting. Very handsome as well. Highly recommend.
Great teacher. Really helpful. You have to take ENC1101, take this class. Makes class fun with his funny remarks.
He grades fairly, 4 essays not too bad. takes attendance and uses the text book!! homework is collected sometimes but interesting and funny. always taking but he keeps your attention.
Took him for ENC 1101, he wasn't as easy or as funny as i thought....but he was pretty decent. Make sure to put effort into your writing to get the grades you want. I reccomend him, even though he is not as good as they make him seem.
This guy's a good teacher and he's interesting. People complain about not getting A's on his essays and it's because you have to conform to his prefered writing style. He likes there to be a surprise in your writing and for your writing to move him. If you pick a bad subject on your essays then it's your loss.
four essays, he's pretty funny, fair grader.
IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE IN ENGLISH, TAKE HIM, I GOT A B AND I ONLY DID TWO ESSAYS AND DIDNT EVEN TURN IN A FINAL PORTFOLIO...
Fair grader. He does take attendance. There were four essays and a final portfolio. There are a few homework assignments that are in the book. Some of them will be collected. Uses the textbook a lot. Helpful if you have any questions. Overall, good teacher.
I agree, this class is not hard to pass. The proffesor is very nice and funny. The only problem is that he makes it nearly impossible for anybody to get an A. Gives A- not A. But overall very helpful and not hard at all to get a B in his class.
Great teacher. Keeps class interesting with cool topics, and class discussions. He's a nice grader, and you can get all your essays proof read by him and pretty much get at least an A-. No final.
Extremely helpful and really teaches you how to write from different perspectives. Real nice guy and tells you exactly what he wants.
He is an awesome professor! Knows how to teach and makes sure you understand the material. He is also very interactive and helpful! Take him!
Pretty good professor. Tries hard to make you understand the grammar part of the class. Weekly papers since it's a writing class; topics are really broad and ambiguous but don't freak out because that's the point. Just write about your own experiences. Study for the grammar exam because your if you fail it twice you have to take the class again.
Very helpful professor. One day a week is dedicated to writing, one day to grammar. There is a paper due every week, and there is a grammar quiz every week. Really easy though, nothing extreme. You have two tries to pass the grammar exam during the semester. I passed it the first time.
The best professor I've had at FIU; not because he was easy, but because I learned SO much from him. I barely knew what a verb was before I took his class. If students failed the grammar exam, it's because they were eating crap all semester. I barely studied and scored an 86. This guy was so awesome, he inspired me to join The Beacon.
Just make sure you follow his directions and present everything on time, that should get you an A. Make sure you write well and decorate the assignments as much as you can, he loves it.
Best professor at FIU. I learned so much in this class. My writing is better than ever because of him. The topics for the essays are interesting. I didn't study for the exit grammar exam and got an 86. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Soto is a fantastic professor. He's extremely helpful and fair. Highly recommend taking him if you need to pass MMC 3104C and actually want to learn a thing or two.
Professor Soto has by far been the best professor I've had at FIU. He's engaging and cares about his students. He suggests you buy the AP Style handbook but it isn't necessary to pass the class. He made me love writing. Would take him again in a heartbeat.
Soto is great. He gives good feedback and ultimately prepares you for the grammar exam. Anyone who takes this class will leave prepared to write exceptionally well in whatever career they pursue. Highly recommend!
Soto is great. He gives lots of feedback and makes sure his students are well prepared for the grammar exam. Highly recommend!
Soto is a great professor. He makes the material engaging and as clear as humanly possible. We wrote articles and narratives all semester long, but they were assignments with a purpose. Everything you will do in that class has a purpose. I would pick him again as a professor in a heartbeat.
Great professor! I can genuinely say I learned a lot this summer. You have a narrative or an assignment due every week , but each assignment has a meaning. I learned more in his class than in any other course in FIU so far. He keeps class light with jokes and definitely has passion for what he does. I enjoyed going to class. I RECOMMEND!
Let's just say, I asked him what are other classes he teaches... Absolutely made me fall in love with going to class. You have to work for your grade because there is a paper or assignment due each week, but personally, I was always excited to write them. You can tell he has a passion for what he is teaching. TAKE HIM!
A writer teaching writing. Makes complex English grammar rules easy to understand. Weekly writing assignments, but face it: you're a communications major. Quick turnaround is cost of entry. Get ready for tough quizzes. Don't try to wing it.
I really enjoyed this class. He assigns papers every week. Not only does he provide the necessary one-on-one feedback, but he also allows you to swap papers with classmates to learn from one another. He also gives out grammar quizzes. If you review before hand you will be fine. I definitely recommend this professor!
Wonderful professor! I love his lectures and sense of humor. Be prepared to take quizzes and write papers almost every week. Although it's a lot work, I learned quite a bit in this class and enjoyed it.
Super understanding and timely with email. Would definitely recommend as your grader for the How We Know What We Know class and would take as a professor too. Seems smart. Grading is also fair. Take an iClicker every class, and submit essays on time. If technical issues come up, email him. Nice guy. Readings online; iClicker is only thing needed.
Definitely recommend this Professor. He is Awesome. You actually learn from his class. Attend class and you will learn and pass the class.
I have never written a rating before but I took the time to write one for Professor Soto because I think he is the best! I have learned more in his class than I have ever in any writing class throughout my school career. If you want to learn and improve your writing, take him!
I've never written a review before but I felt like I needed to for this professor because he's truly amazing. He does assign weekly (or bi-weekly) writing assignments along with weekly grammar quizzes so it sounds strenuous but he really makes sure to have his one-on-one revisions with you & he completely transforms your writing. 100% recommend!
Wonderful class and Wonderful Professor. Please REGISTER NOW! :-)
Yes, there are tons of writing assignments because the class is about writing. I do think the professor is good at explaining the assignments. He is nerdy, and it is willing to answer any questions. He is a nice guy. Take him.
He relates what you learn in class to the outside world, and makes class fun. He is always cracking jokes, and is very approachable. He will listen when you have a problem and try to help you out as much as he can.
Only take this class if you can make it a priority. There are essay assignments every single week and a test on the class readings plus the daily front page of the New York Times every other week. I took this class online and it was super confusing. If you don't need to take this class I would spare myself the stress. Also, we had 3 group projects
A very interesting class with a very arrogant professor. Very dismissive of students when they did not understand his very unorganized WordPress platform. He says his class is the most "demanding" you will ever take, but it is really just the most unorganized one. I passed with flying colors. Stay organized, because he won't be.
The class was disorganized. We did not know the grading scale until later on in the semester as it was updated(30% each for the following categories: assignments, RATS, and Final essay, and a free 10% for taking pre and post test) and due dates were always unclear. The professor is very sarcastic and unhelpful. Stay organized and you should be fine
Professor Soto was probably the most caring professor i have come across at FIU. Although he is very sarcastic and humorous, he relates a lot to his students to create a great learning enviroment. Only downfall is that he changes due dates a lot so make sure to check emails from him and pay attention to specific directions in his class.
He's cool and knows his stuff. He's approachable. Sometimes he sucks at responding to students or he'll give ambiguous answers about a doubt about an assignment. The only thing that sucks about this class is that there's graders and he doesn't grade anything. Therefore, inconsistency with grading. It's annoying. Take him though, he's good.
Professor Soto was a great instructor, however, if you don't read the assigned chapters or watch the assigned films/movie clips, it will be hard to write your reflection papers. There was a lot of writing, and two postings, but all the tests were open book. My class was online and I found it very easy to keep up and balance other classes w/work.
Had the good semester with Professor Soto! There was a lot of writing required from this class but if you have your book and go to class it shouldn't be hard. I read the negative reviews and still received a fair grade, honest feedback, and help from him. I would suggest him only if you are prepared to do your work.
Get ready to read and write... A LOT! Paper and online discussion due each week. He reads everything carefully and is a really tough grader. Watch the dates of the assignments as he changes dates and assignments often without warning. He answers emails very quickly, and is a fast grader- which is nice. You must have the textbook.
Gives a lot of papers that you MUST read a little from the textbook and watch the film clips for, but they're straightforward and he is really specific about what he wants. Gives good feedback and does it quickly. Easy to contact and responds fast.
I love Professor Soto! He is a harsh grader, but he just wants all his students to do well. I would def take again. This course had a 4 speech analysis, a final and a couple discussion posts! MUST cite/purchase the book at all times.
Soto is a great professor. He works at BBC as part of the director of the student paper Panther now. He is a journalist and even has his own blog page. He himself as person is sarcastic and funny, but he is a knowledgeable professor by all means. Journalistic type writing assignments, with field work involved. I had a fun time in his class.
Communication in Film Online class: He gives great feedback on your papers. This is a writing heavy class. You will write several essays and there is a MC midterm and Final. His feedback helps you improve your thinking and writing skills. I really enjoyed the class but NOT an easy A.
You need the textbook to pass, not such a hard class just do your 2 assignments per week and you'll be fine
Great professor and makes you work for it. Clear grading criteria and great feedback. 4 film analysis papers, 1 international film comparison. Responds to emails within the day or hour. Wants his students to pass and definitely not an easy A. You NEED the textbook
You couldn't really ask for a better professor. If you do what he asks and pay attention to details in the questions. You will be fine. The easiest way to fail his class is to not do what he instructs you to do. Great class, you learn so much about art, and he is a very funny and authentic person. You won't be disappointed. But get ready to write.
Professor Soto is a tough grader. He does like to state his opinion a lot. Overall the assignments are not difficult whatsoever. If you do your reading you'll pass with no problem. And do what is asked for the assignments. He has no issue telling you exactly what you did wrong and questioning you.
Hands down Professor Soto is one of the best professors I've had. He is always willing to work with you and gives tons of resources + opportunities to help you do good. For an online class, you can tell he is invested in his students which is pretty rare in most professors lately. Just make sure to use the text and reach out when you need help!
Prof Soto is great. 8 short writing assignments with one longer paper due towards the end of the course. Bit tough grading but READ his feedback and you will improve. If you're not willing to get the book DO NOT even enroll, you will fail. Midterm and Final are 50 questions open book with 2 hours to complete. Do good on these and you're golden.
Professor Soto is a pretty tough grader and if you don't read the textbook you definitely won't pass. It's a lot of reading but needed for discussions and reflection papers which aren't too long or difficult to complete. He's great at what he does and is a pretty cool guy. His grading and requirements for the class are very clear .
Amazing professor, I never thought I would learn so much from an online class. I love how creative his assignments were. They made you think outside the box, and not the usual boring essay or quiz assignments. He always gave great feedback and I loved how quick he always graded. P.s. read the instructions before you ask him what to do.
Excellent class! Soto's course encompasses the meanings of movies and all that plays into factor before films hit the big screen. Occasional film watching in class is promised, but those revolve around weekly film reflections. Your understanding of all films will not only expand but just only begin to come into fruition. Happy watching!!
The class was pretty straightforward. It was heavy with long papers due weekly but they were graded fast and with feedback. The professor also responds super quickly when emailed and explains clearly. Overall tough class because of the material but you can tell he's passionate about it and willing to help so I highly recommend.
He is nice overall, but there are way too many papers due. Honestly I don't even know why he has such a high rating hahaha, yes, he's kinda funny but WAY too much work! He doesn't accept any late work at all, which is just unfair with students... we have a life you know. Life happens.
Yes, this class is a lot of work, but it's definitely doable. Prof. Soto's love for film is very contagious and I looked forward to his class every week. You'll learn a lot as well as get to watch lots of movies!
Professor Soto's love for whatever subject he is teaching shines through and rubs off. He gives excellent feedback on every assignment and always seeks to get the best out of every student. If you do not mind writing assignments almost every week, his class will be a very valuable experience.
Soto is a great professor who I strongly recommend! I took this class online and it was very easy and manageable, typically only one assignment per week usually a discussion post, and he sends reminders about his due dates. He is very nice and helpful.
In all honesty, I find this to be a fairly simple course. If you don't like weekly short writing assignments that's due every Tuesday then don't take this course. 8 writing assignment 200-250 words. 2 exams OPEN BOOK and 1 Reflection paper which was easy for me. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
Best prof ive taken at fiu. Super nice and caring. 3 discussions, 3 papers (on basically any topic u want), 2 exams (midterm then final) that are 5 written questions, and 1 mock speech write up. Textbook u can find online. Gives great feedback and grades usually the day after an assignment was due. Also 1 extra credit.
Take this class if you like history and actually want to be taught. There is one homework assignment basically every week with exceptions, and he is a little particular about his grading, but its easy to adapt. I truly loved this professor and his teaching style. Two online tests and one official reflection.
Great prof! Grades and answers emails very quickly. 4 movie reflections, a couple of discussion posts, and a final paper. Movies during class, and we usually got out early. No textbook but you need a subscription to the criterion channel unless you can find the movies somewhere else.
Definitely recommend taking him! His feedback on the assignments was very clear. I love how he also provided work from previous students to help us understand how he wanted the assignments to be done. He also provided important videos that correlated with the weekly readings so we could better understand what we were learning that week.
Great feedback on assignments, really cares for students and helping them improve, even created a whatsapp groupchat for the class to directly reach out. Absolutely take him. Won't regret it.
his classes are super easy and mainly consist of lectures but lectures where he expects atleast one person to talk back, in a way he tries to make the sutdents have conversations with him and feel comfortable doing so because he will not make you feel bad for your answer almost as if no answer is a bad answer his homework is easy, only test online.
Mr. Soto is amazing. He is sooo caring towards all his students and understanding when life happens. He will reopen assignments within reason and always gives feedback on assignments. Would take him for any class again.
