At first, I dreaded this class. But he made it fun! Powerpoint presentations so it's very easy to take notes and understand. Has fun videos every so often to wake students up. Overall great teacher.
While he uses powerpoint for notes, it is not easy to take them. He moves through them too fast...so get ready to write fast. He does make his own movies so it isn't a complete bore.
YOu need to come to class every day to understand his material. You will find his material in the book and more importantly, NOT in the book. He tests on random things...he likes memorization of stupid things that you will forget right after the test. Study everythign and anything you can.
this class is really easy as long as you attend class. only two exams plus a final-all based strictly on lecture notes (no need to read). write down what he has on the powerpoint, study/memorize your notes, and it's an easy A. plus, there are always the motivation videos!!!
It's hard to take notes in his class because he moves through the powerpoints so quickly, but you don't really have to read the book. Flash cards are helpful for the tests because they pretty much ask for a bunch of random facts and statistics. Pretty much a typical useless Miami Plan course.
not the most exciting class but not the worst either. tests seem to be all notes, don't bother with the reading. write fast because he moves through slides fast, but his motivational videos are fun. pretty nice guy and also sometimes gives extra credit for being there.
nice teacher, he just moves too fast through the notes...which makes it hard to follow along
I thought he did an great job teaching, he made the study of plants fun, which is nearly impossible. There are only 3 exams, wich arent very hard if you take notes (powerpoint) and unlike other people that rated him, I felt he moved at a good pace. I really liked the class and feel it has to be one of the easiest miami plan sciences.
Very difficult, teaches class like it's for graduate students and ruines class morale. Terrible at teaching.

Goes really fast through powerpoints, trys to fit as much as possible into one class, attendence is important, the motivational videos are oscar worthy.
As everyone else said he moves fast. But he makes the material about as interesting or exciting as botony can be. Even though there is a lot of notes, the test comes directly out of them (you dont even need to buy the book). As long as you know the notes, you will do good.
As everyone else said, he moves very fast through his powerpoints, but posts them online. If you study hard for the exams, you should be fine. Don't study, and well, you'll see what happens. Motivational videos are sweet. A good guy, and very passionate towards botany, and does his best to keep the students interested. He knows its not to exciting.
I enjoyed his class. Takes random attendance with clickers, goes through notes really fast, but will go back if you need them, and the tests are kinda hard but not impossible. Hates when you talk during lecture. The motivational videos are the saving grace somedays, they are pretty funny.
easy tests boring lectures and get ready for a bunch of liberal bias. like the rest of the science departments hes so far left its hard to even sit through class.
incredibly liberal - very passionate - he knows most ppl are taking this class for miami plan and not for interest - tests are very fair - study the powerpoints - theres very few things that go on tests that arent in the notes - do not buy the textbook - find someone w/ a clicker (try facebook) - dont miss class ever - he docks HUGE points for it
Very easy class with no homeowrk except a few small papers in the discussion part of the class...however tests are rediculously hard and you wont pass the class if you dont study hard enuf, memorize power point slides and you will do fine. Takes daily attendance wiht clickers, and gives a few quiz questions every class, so attendance is mandatory.
Really strict when it comes to exams. He is overly insistant about preventing cheating. Classes are mandatory, but fairly easy with all notes on blackboard. Extra credit is given often for just showing up to class.
Nice guy. Didn't like the class set up. Has a clicker quiz every class, so although it isn't mandatory to go you are penalized if you don't go.
Huerta puts all the lectures on Bb, but you still have to go to class. There are clickers that he uses every day that are for quizzes. The discussion group is the killer. There are papers, quizzes, debates, and other worksheets you have to do every week. It gets annoying. It is an easy class as long as you study the notes he provides.
Hands down the most miserable and depressing Miami Plan Class I have ever taken. You have to absolutely pwn the clicker grade (its worth 200 of the 1000 points) If you start to miss small points here and there you pretty much will get destroyed. Highly do NOT recommend this class. In a nutshell.
Dr. Huerta is a great professor. He emphasizes the important information during lecture and is open to questions. Clicker quizzes and extra credit are very helpful. Discussion is annoying to go to but very easy and not too much work. Overall fairly easy course. Good miami plan. Lots of extra credit
Least favorite person on the face of this earth.
Class is pointless and he treats it as if you are passionate about botany, which is clearly not the case for anyone in the room. Easy class but you actually have to attend. He takes away huge points for skipping class. There are 300 people in the lecture and he walks around checking computer screens to make sure your "paying attention." Pointless.
Class is very interesting, and tests are easy, but Huerta can be a real jerk about his views of non-botany majors. For discussion, DO NOT TAKE SUMA!!! She gave me bad grades on papers and told me that they were very good. Discussion pulled down my grades enormously!
He really likes plants. I was not at all interested and only took the class for Miami plan, so it was annoying to have to study for the exams but wasn't too difficult just boring. You have to go to every class because he has 3 question quizzes almost every day but they are super easy and you can always cheat on them
boring. have to go to class to take clicker quizzes daily. lots of notes. average grades.
just terrible
Looks and talks like Cheech Marin.

Dr. Huerta is a great teacher who knows and cares about what he teaches but he's rather tough. Requires alot of work but help is available. Exams are brutal so you need to make it up in attendance/clicker quizzes.
I absolutely HATED this class. I don't mind the subject matter, but Huerta treats the class like a bunch of middle schoolers and shows no respect. Always goes over class time which is annoying. Tests are hard and he doesn't give study guides or any way to review. Talks WAYYY too much;he just likes the sound of his own voice. Grading is unclear too.
Do not take this class. It was the worst class I've ever taken. The teacher doesn't teach, all he does is read off the projection board. The class is all memorization and his tests aren't even based on what he goes over in class. He thinks he's funny, but he's not. Again, do NOT take this class.
I looked forward to this class every week. Dr. Huerta shows a lot of interest in the subject matter and therefore knows his stuff. He makes class enjoyable. Pay attention to everything in class, especially the power point because most of the test questions come from there. Scimming through your notes before each class helps with the quizzes.
This class is absolutely TERRIBLE!! The only thing he does is read off of a projector, and then tests you on THE most innate details. He is NO help when you go to office hours and don't even bother trying to ask him, go to the TA. Half the time he will go off on tangents, he is obviously biased and lectures on "his way" being the only way.
You definitely have to go to every class because he has a clicker quiz every day. The quizzes are only 4 questions but your clicker is registered to you so you definitely have to be there or you get a 0. He basically just reads his slides during class. Most of the quiz questions come from the slides. All in all the class is really not that bad.
you can discuss the quizes with each other, so they are easy.attendance is mandatory. the powerpoints are all online. the quizes, worksheets, and assignments for discussion groups are really easy. but, they don't count for a lot. there are only 2 tests so they weigh a lot and they are impossible.neither huerta or the ta's are good for any help.
The class is kind of boring. The best way to pass the clicker quizes is to read your notes before each class. the discussion sections are pointless. rent the book online because you barely use it.
He's a good professor but he does not post his notes before class. This is EXTREMELY annoying because of the numerous diagrams that are involved. This is a bmz class and its hard already. By him not posting the notes it makes it even more difficult. Good teacher but makes the class so much harder by not posting the notes before class.
This guy brings a lot of interesting societal issues up during class (since it is part of the course). The problem is he is useless if you have questions or problems and he can be quite downright mean. Lots of cheating on clicker questions occurs. Tests are hard, even if you LOVE the subject. Alternation of generations unit will make you miserable.
Really passionate about the subject. Loves it when people ask questions. Will sometimes call on random people. The information he presents is really difficult. The test questions are really confusing and tricky
LOVED this class! It can be boring if your not interested in the topic but Dr. Huerta is very passionate about what he teaches and really wants the students engaged. Go to class for the clicker quizzes=easy points towards your grade. Really nice just serious about the topics.
I had Pennock, Huerta, and Balish, and Huerta was definitely the average of the three. He was pretty clear when it came to exam material and he expects you to know a lot of details. But his teaching style really just entails reading off the slides (which he doesnt post beforehand). Sometimes he will extrapolate, but rarely.
His tests questions are too bad but his teaching style is really annoying because he teaches off powerpoints and doesn't post them beforehand for some reason. He's not overly helpful in office hours but his test questions are relatively straightforward which is all that matters.
Hated this class. Attendance is mandatory, as a clicker quiz takes place at some point during every class. The TA's are clearly pretty uninterested in teaching, and Dr. Huerta would never question his teaching methods. When bad test grades come in, he will tell the class they didn't study good enough. Would not recommend.
Very enthusiastic. Pretty easy in general. There are in class clicker quizzes everyday but he lets you talk to everyone around you before answering the question. So basically the class takes the quizzes together. And if you answer at least 2/4 correct you automatically get an extra crecit point. There is almost no hw in the class except for the lab
Really hard. Took it as a sprint course & studied so much for the final because I hadn't done so hot on the first two exams. I was appalled to see that most of my exam questions were on 20 articles and videos mostly 45 min to an hr and a half long that were assigned at the end of the course. I of course studied the information instead of the videos
You dont need to buy the book, it is rarely used and can be found in the library for the few times it is necessary. go to class everyday, he has very simple in class quizzes that you can talk to your neighbors about before answering. do the additional readings he puts online, the final was basically all questions from there.
I took this class for the miami plan, and i wish i didn't. Don't buy the book, you never use it. The clicker quizzes arent bad, you talk with everyone around you so its easy points. But the final hard. its was mostly on all these articles we had to read and videos.
Hated it. You had to show up to take clicker tests, and the exams were over assignments he'd email you rather than talking about in class. It was ridiculous, and his peppy attitude got kind of annoying
Always have to be studying the information, always have to keep up with the readings and videos he assigns because they make up a lot of the exam/final questions. Don't expect to automatically get a good grade in this class. Had to work really hard just to get a B and I've heard horror stories of people failing this class.
Don't buy the book, just borrow from someone else for the three readings you actually have to do. Make sure you watch the assigned videos and online readings (even though they're extremely long) because it's most of the exam right there.
READ THE BOOK. Interesting lectures but hard test questions. Study early for tests and make sure you have the book to read all of the assigned readings.
He taught the botany section of BMZ in my class. Obviously the class is hard--its BMZ. Don't even consider taking BMZ if you aren't ready for some hardcore studying. That said, I LOVED HIM. I thought he was completely clear in his teaching style, and he uses hilarious examples to demonstrate concepts. They're ridiculous but they help a lot!
He finds obscure questions to put on the test, so study the book, especially minute details. The class is hard, and a weed-out for premeds, but even still he was absolutely ridiculous. If he didn't have such a bad attitude or wasn't so unapproachable, the entire class would have been much better for me. He's funny at times but in general not good.
He's a beast.
good teacher
The sprint course throws a ton of info at you in a small amount of time. His tests are difficult because the questions ask about minute details of his power points. Make sure to read the assigned reading because half of his tests ask pointless questions from the articles he emails you. Huerta is neither approachable or helpful. Avoid this class.
He is a good teacher but it is up to you to learn the material and read the articles. He is willing to answer questions but you have to ask him. This class is an easy A if you do the work. I definitely recommend it!
It's a sprint course so you move very quickly. You have to come to class every time because he gives in class quizzes. Test are very difficult but he is always willing to help
I didn't dislike this class; however, he was very biased in how he presented the material. He was convinced this was the most important class you will ever take in college. "Your generation is going to kill the earth" and other extreme tree hugger statements were always a part of lecture. I got an A only because I knew most of the info from HS.
He is a friendly person, just be prepared to STUDY A LOT and ATTEND class like college students should.
Great Professor, extremely enthusiastic about the material and personally sparked my interest in Botany. As others have mentioned, tests are difficult and include minute details from his power points. Attend all the lectures and keep up with the assigned reading and it's not a problem.
This professor is not reliable. He says that the material on the exams is straight forward however the questions are designed to trick you! Although he is enthusiastic, his class is incredibly opinionated and bias to his ideas. I do not recommend this professor
He's very excited about botany and brought a lot of enthusiasm to the class. Everyday there is inclass clicker quizzes so if you want the points you have to go to class. His tests have very tricky questions so be prepared to study every little detail of his powerpoints. Because it's a sprint course you learn a lot of information very quickly.
He's a great person but a difficult professor. While the material seems easy enough in his lectures, most of the exam questions are based on outside readings and minute details (there's no text book required). He also gives extra credit opportunity, but you pretty much have to attend lectures to pass.
He knows a lot of information, but pretty boring. You basically have to attend lectures in order to pass the class. The exams seem like they should be easy but they are based mostly off of outside reading. He gives a ton of extra points though which REALLY boosts your grade. Not too hard to get a good grade if you go to class.
Hardest class I take. Basically he reads off the power points the whole class, but you have to go because there is a quiz every class. The exams aren't even from the power points, but from videos and outside reading. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Dr. Huerta is a sweetheart and always gives so many extra credit points! You'll love him and the class.
People seemed to dislike Huerta, but I think it's just because botany tends to be more boringconfusing than the zoology or cell biology parts of the course. He teaches pretty well, but he speaks kind of softly so it can be kind of hard to hear him at times. There are usually quizzes every Friday, so keep up with the material to keep your grade up!
Take this.
This class is pretty eye-opening about food and agriculture, so if you like eating processed stuff, just don't listen. Be ready to take a lot of notes. You only take a couple tests, so you really gotta know everything, but it's not too hard. Show up every day! You'll take quizzes daily, but you get extra credit.
Dr. Huerta is one of my favorite professors this semester. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and it definitely shows through his lectures. The topics discussed are interesting and you learn a lot of things related to the agriculture of food. There are clicker-quizzes every lecture and only a few exams but overall he's a great prof.
An A is possible in this class, but you have to out in the work. Professor huerta was very passionate about what he was teaching and was very welcoming with questions. It helps to go over your notes everyday, so your prepared for the daily quizes he gives and come to class so you can get those points. Also, make sure you do well in discussion.
Huerta is by far my favorite professor. He made me almost switch to a Bio major from business I loved his class so much. He is passionate about what he does and it really shows in his lectures. There are quizzes almost everyday, but you can talk to your neighbors. There is not much reading and the exams come straight from the notes. Amazing class!
Came out with an A in o chem and a C in this class. I could write an essay about how much I dislike this professor, but I'll keep it short. His lectures are confusing, his manner is demeaning, and it felt as if he wrote exam questions with intentions to trick you instead of test your understanding. NO DO TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HUERTA.
I am not good at science at all and taking his course actually made me feel like I could be good at science. He always explains everything very well and gives time for people to ask questions
If you value your grade, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! You may know like the back of your hand, but he puts the most obscure questions on the tests. Most of the information on the tests come from things he said once or from reading/videos that we have not discussed.
Professor Huerta seems like a nice enough guy, and is definitely passionate about his field of study, but he doesn't make for a good professor. During his lectures, he will harp on one or two very easy and clear points. However, on tests, he completely blindsides you. The material included on the tests is rarely ever mentioned or taught.
Good guy, and very passionate about the subject he teaches, but his tests are very odd. In every exam, about 10% of the questions are completely random and very difficult to answer. They would be about things he had mentioned once, or maybe a small obscure fact. Other than that frustration, the class is very easy and the topic very relevant to life
Really enthusiastic about the environment and loves question. Tests are over the powerpoint slides that he puts online and occasionally over the readings. No homework other than the interesting if mostly skippable readings. Ridiculously easy quizzes every class. The biology aspect is a little tough, but the environmental aspect is easy.
There is a four question quiz on a clicker at the end of each class. Lecture materials are online. This class did really make me think about the environment and the food that we eat more than I did before I took it.
This professor really cares about what he does. He is easy to talk to and I have no problem asking him questions.
Each lecture you take 1 or 2 short(1-4 question) clicker quizzes at the end of the class covering recently lectured topics! These are pretty much the attendance and partial extra credit grades! All tests are multiple choice, 2 exams and a final. The discussion class isnt bad, attendance points given, and pay attention and youll get full credit!
decent class & pretty easy. Prof is nice and lectures are easy to follow. However, half of the course material is literally propaganda that the world is ending and commercial agriculture is evil. Take the class, but don't believe everything in this course material. Statistics are cherry picked and movies in class are literally conspiracy docs
Pretty straightforward. He's a nice guy and his class is really eye-opening. The clicker quizzes are easy points, though the exams are a little tough.
