He's cool, until he lectures, or grades, coolest when found at the Joynt.

Hard to understand and boring. Nice guy though.

Hard as a **** to understand, lectures were boring ass hell and i slept through almost all of them. Entire grade was based off of 2 papers (not hard) and 2 presentations. Can get a good grade in the class without reading the book, or showing up.
His lectures suck. i didn't even go near the end because i would either fall a sleep or everything he said went in one ear and came out the other. He is also very hard to understand. His tests are pretty hard too. Find someone else to teach you pols!!!

Best class ever, but you HAVE TO SPEAK!! You'll do fine if you talk. It's boring the first few weeks, because Ali lectures, but the rest he stays out of, for the most part.
Good class if you need to catch up on your sleep.I ended up copying every word of the notes just to stay awake. The material isn't very clear and the tests kinda suck.Grade is based on 2 tests and a big paper. Bad news.
Very very boring, great class to get some sleep. The title of the class should be changed to Intro. to Politics of Middle East. He lectures straight from the book, in fact just read the book and skip the classes.
Somewhat boring, but easy and he's pretty funny.
awful to listen to...so hard to understand. nice guy, but doesn't help. hard material is hard to learn when you can't understand the teacher.
Excellent Class - Nice Guy - Great instructor that you can really learn a lot from. Fair grader. He can be a bit hard to follow sometimes, especially if you have trouble with accents. Just for the Record - HE IS IRANIAN not Iraqi.
Nice guy, grading is fair, and he IS easy to understand after a few class periods. Does get boring at times, but it's a class, so ya know, whatever. I'd recommend the class if you're interested in current events.
Very helpful, fair grader, and his Iranian accent is easy to understand after the first class. Reading the articles he e-mails and doing the reading, printing his outlines before class really helps.
Really Boring
He's a great professor and he makes it interesting, especially with the accent and his funny comments. However be prepared to absorb a lot of information, and I mean a lot! Read his FYI's, they're helpful for bonus points on exam and always take notes, not every point of his is on the outline.
Great guy, very willing to help if you show some intiative and are really trying to understand the material. Knows what he is talking about and has a great sense of humor. Don't take this class if you are looking for and easy A, he actually cares about the material and expects you to also.
hey, the guy knows his stuff. but connecting ideas and theories in his discussions is pretty difficult and staying awake is even harder......
Funny guy. Cares about how the students feel. I thought the class was pretty interesting, actually. Tests sometimes had weird questions so make sure to read the charts in the book.
Overall a good teacher, can be boring and is left-of-center with his opinions but seems to grade fairly. Nice guy to talk to.
Ali's lectures seem to lack an overarching theme. It is difficult to understand what he expects you to know - even what issues to be familiar with. He is a great asset because HE REALLY KNOWS HIS STUFF. But his teaching leaves something to be desired.
He is VERY willing to help if you ask. It wasn't the easiest 100 level class I took, but it wasn't terrible either.

very all-knowing, just sometimes hard to understand, because he talks FAST :)
Accent is hard to understand at first, but once you get over it the class is really interesting. There is a lot of information but he's very helpful, and he knows TONS about the region.

This class is a very hard GE class. I would not reccomend taking it over American Politics. He's hard to understand, wanders around in his lectures, and is very vague about tests and the big paper. He's very knowledgeable, just not a great professor.
He only teaches only from a VERY liberal point of view. His tests are unGodly hard....and he doesn't really do a good job on what he wants us to study for the test. If you say something, he shoots you down and makes you feel small..hence not many speak in class unless they are liberal too.
Extremly hard to understand, test and paper very hard because no idea what they are about highly recomend a differnt prof
Ali is hard to understand, but he is pretty thorough with his explanations. Ali also has a great emphasis on reading. If Ali is your professor, expect to have reading assignments and expect to receive e-mails relevant to the course!
Ali is a nice guy, will give you all the help you need if you seek him out. Expects you to earn your grade. Test study guides not very clear. Listen in class and do the readings you'll do fine. He sends out emails of his lecture outlines, you need to add to them during lecture. Is very liberal, I am conservative, but he was respectful of views
I took this class as my FYE class. Hardly anyone spoke in the class, and it was difficult to understand what was expected of us. Be sure to read the assigned chapters and issues, it will make tests a lot easier. Find people in your class to form a study group with because it makes studying easier and more fun!
Ali knows a lot about the subject but does a terrible job getting it across to his students. He'll tell you to read the text 3 times, which you have to if you want a good grade, tests are on tiny details. I realized after the first test that textbook reading and taking sides reading were MUCH more important than his lectures.
Dont expect anything out of this man. He is a HORRIBLE teacher and super difficult to understand the majority of the time. Read the book and teach yourself.
if you don't mind side conversations, take him. he taught the middle east instead of world politics. the tests were totally opposite of class notes and what he lectured. horrible experience!
totally random conversations. the tests were never on the notes, even with a curve they were bad. only take this class if you need to. i hated it
I hate this class- the tests suck b/c the lecture notes don't help much-
Very hard to understand. Doesn't lecture very good and most of his tests are not on the textbook.
His lectures are confusing if you don't exactly follow politics that often. Do the reading! This is where the bulk of the material on the exams comes from.
Can't understand him. Lecture notes do not help. I spent hours reading the chapters and knew the content of the chapters, but got c's on the test. Most people seem to fail the tests. There is no guidance for the final paper. I'm expecting to do horribly in this class and im a good student.
Dr. A gives no direction for his final paper at all. He just says to write a ten page paper on an international issue. Even though the class is introduction to world politics, if you don't know much about them, it's very difficult. I only recomend this class for people who are informed about international issues prior to the class.
Lectures are long and boring. He's hard to understand sometimes. You'll find yourself spacing out. Tests have nothing to do with the lectures. You're better off just memorizing the terms on the study guide he sends out. He's a nice and funny guy but not a good teacher. If you don't know much about politics beforehand you may be lost in lectures
Lectures every day, can get long and boring. Started taking attendance about halfway through semester. Only assignment is a 7-10 page paper due at end of semester, plus the tests. He gives out a study guide before the tests, DO IT THOROUGHLY or you won't have a clue what's going on, no matter how often you go to class.
He was hard to understand, and his tests didn't seem to be about material covered in class.
I HATE HIM! He's a nice person, but should not be teaching! He's hard to understand, gives you no direction on the final paper, doesn't do his own study sessions, and his lectures are basically "all roads lead to Iraq" and then statistics. I thought I understood what was going on; his tests are ridiculous unless Polsci is your dream. Not easy!
Hard tests.
Awful...just awful. I'm sure he's a nice enough guy, but the class was just bad. Very difficult to understand (I know it's not his fault, but still), the material on the tests wasn't what we spent time on in class and the final paper was and still is a mystery to me. I don't think he ever even read mine. Take the class, but take another prof.
Amazing professor! The class was challenging, but Dr. A made it fun. He's a VERY smart guy. Those who complain are obviously not POLS majors and seem to have a sense of entitlement. In the Political Science department, there IS NO GRADE INFLATION. If you want a grade, you have to EARN it.
Dr A's lectures are random and impossible to listen too. If attendance wasn't madatory I wouldn't even attend. Just learn from the study guide and pray that your knowledge of current events is good enough that you can get through the class. Also, no direction is given on final reasearch paper. Only reason I am passing is I know alot about Polisci
horrible teacher, extremely biased, extremely boring. AVOID HIM IF POSSIBLE...there are definitely other politics teachers that would be better.
Dont take him, he talks on and on about stuff that is not on the test, then hands out a study guide, about half of which is on the test, half is just crazy random words you never need to know. You will fall asleep in this class even if you are a poly sci major. Good class, bad teacher
professor a does not hate the west as some would say. Obviously coming from Iran he has a different perspecive than people who grew up in America. Most of the rest of the world condems alot of things Israel does in the Middle East so it is not outlandish for people to call a spade a spade
All I will say is if you have any pride for your country you should not take this man. After hearing him say "freedom fighters" while talking about terrorists I stopped coming. Extremely liberal and very unwilling to hear anything but what he believes. Exams horrible!
Terrible professor. I didn't learn anything this whole semester. What he talks about in class is never on the exam...confusing lectures..horrible-never take this professor!!!!!
I was truly looking forward to this class (I'm a pols major), and, even though I'm writing this before I get my grade back, am expecting to fail or get a D. I couldn't understand a word he said and even though he doesn't hate the west, he bases a lot of his lectures to the middle east. he teaches middle eastern politics too which is probably why.
Honestly the absolute worst class I have ever, EVER, taken. This is not a 100-level course. Your grade is solely based on 3 exams and a term paper. Lectures are incredibly boring, the readings are even worse, and his overall teaching techniques are horrible. I am an A student, the is the lowest grade I have ever gotten. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I can understand how his lectures might be boring, but for Model UN class, he was a lot of fun. For 3 credits the class is definitely worth taking, and though the brunt of learning falls of the student, I actually learned a lot. There are no tests, only two ten page papers, which I actually preferred.
It is true that Dr. A is often diffcult to understand, but he is not a bad professor. I would definatly reccomend taking his upper level classes over his the intro one because he seems more relaxed with Poli Sci majors.
He gets hated on alot but I actually enjoyed his class. He gives great examples and clearly knows what he's talking about. He also brought in a guest speaker that was amazing. Not the easiest teacher but definitely a good one if you want to pay attention and want to learn.
He has a very thick Iranian accent which was extremely hard for me to get used to, once you get over that he isn't a horrible professor. He knows his stuff. His tests were hard and sometimes not on material studied. Grade only based on paper and 3 tests. Hard 100 level course in my opinion.
Dr. Abootalebi is a great guy. However I had some difficulty in the class as a whole. The entire class being based around 3 TOUGH exams and a paper makes it a hard one to pull a high grade on. The paper isn't too bad, however.
Class average on the first exam was 62%. Enough said.
Funny guy and he makes the class pretty good. Constantly makes wisecracks to keep students paying attention. To do well on his tests you HAVE to do the readings. Much of his exams are on reading material and not solely on lectures. Read, take a few brief notes on each chapter, and go to class and you'll be fine
Very nice guy, but his class is extremely difficult. He covers a lot of material and you need to be in class almost everyday. Take a lot of notes and really study hard.
I thought this class would be interesting but it was a complete bore. Although Dr. A. is really really nice, he is not a good teacher--basically just reads off of the power points. I usually left class feeling like I didn't learn anything. I wouldn't recommend him.
Mr Abootalebi is a nice guy and very intellegent. He is hard but fair.
he's cool.
I didn't get much "Everybody following" it just didn't work
He is a very nice man, funny, and interested in his students. However, his tests are based on the book, not his lectures, his study guides are so disorganized; he has a couple terms on the list three or more times! You basically have to teach yourself to do well. NOT A 100 Level Course! Hill is a much better professor so if you can take him for122
Here is how you can do well in his class. Just read the books he said to have for class. Understand what is on his very disorganized study guides, and show up for the exam. I didn't attend one lecture and I am doing fine in his class. He is a terrible teacher, don't take him.
Before I joined Ali's class of nonesense, I had a life...once. There is absolutely no point to this class, only if you want to convert to Islam in 4 months. Amen.
Abootalebi is a pretty cool guy, but for politics I'm just not a huge fan of his method of teaching. The tests are exceptionally difficult, but the paper can help buffer your grade if you make it good. Has a bit of an accent that can make understanding him difficult on rare occasions, but you get used to it. Funny guy as well.
There are not enough words to describe Abootalebi, except for...BORING, know=it-all, 'freedom fighter', extremely horrendous, class is a time to nap. and worst of all, everytime he says "are you all following this?" you just want to stand and say "no. of course not. does it look like we are?!" Advice: dont take this class unless Islam is ur thing.
It's a tough class and you MUST read your textbook to get an A. At first he's difficult to understand but you get use to it within a week or so, and he's really funny. His tests are really difficult, but he grades so nicely (curves, and gives bonus points) "Are you all following this?" if not you'll probably be "shishkabobed" :)
One of the worst professors I have had at UWEC. He is completely unwilling to help students in anyway. I would never take him again.
Dr. Abootalebi is one of the most knowledgeable teachers I've ever taken. That being said his class is far from easy. Be prepared to write ALOT of notes and read the book, seriously READ THE BOOK! Only 3 tests and 1 paper so not alot of margin for error. Has an accent, but you work through it as the semester progresses. Good luck!
Interesting style of grading. Suggested readings, really only need to read one smaller book per exam (only 2). One large paper; not bad. Sometimes hard to understand. Interesting topic, but not a fan of word-doc style of going through substance. Helpful and a nice guy in his office. Funny and enjoyable.
Entire class based on participation, basically. He only teaches the first few days and then the rest is on your own. I got away with participating only a few times and just did well on papers so me grade was fine. He IS willing to help if you go in to see him in his office. Otherwise there are other students more than willing to help.
This man LOVES international political economy. He jokes that he will "Shishkabob" you...HE WILL. Great professor, great class, but man is it hard. Read everything he says to read, then read it again...then pray for a good grade.
He has his funny moments and thinks all students are hungover on Mondays and dreaming of parties on Fridays. Lecture printouts are often unclear and you really have to pay attention to understand what things written on there refer to. Tests aren't bad if you read the book. You will have to write a term paper.
Abootalebi is a hard professor - attendance is not mandatory, but in order to keep up with tests you MUST attend. He gets off topic 9/10 times and he is very hard to understand. He isn't helpful during his office hours, either. I learned more from his TA, and substitute Dr. Hill.
Ali is a very intelligent and passionate man but that does not make him a good teacher. During lecture don't worry about taking any notes, they wont help. In preparation for the horrid tests just read the book (including tables/graphs) the terms sheet he gives doesn't really help. The research paper has no real direction either.
I really like him, he's really witty and intelligent. He just gets frustrated when people don't participate/care about things. It's not a very easy class, but I learned a lot!
Can't believe all the bad rating he is getting. If you enjoy following the news and are into politics you should do fine. I never opened the book. Not once. Just go to class and take notes and you'll do fine on the multiple choice exams. He was a pretty easy grader on the papers too. I didn't have trouble understanding him for the most part. Funny.
Since he doesn't post grades online for exams or the research paper, you pretty much never know where you stand in the class. Never answers any of my emails. The exams can be pretty tricky too.
Easiest class I've taken. Don't bother to read the textbook, just study his notes or browse through it right before an exam. You do have to read the Taking Sides book, but those are fairly short. Graded the paper easy, exams have tons of extra credit and are all multiple choice.
Hard to understand. Confusing. Questions had nothing to do with the test and were extremely hard unless you attend EVERY class and pay attention as well as study
Essay/ID exams are entirely on the (very dry and heavy) reading. One major paper, the topic of which is open. Notes are disorganized and it is difficult to keep up. Would not recommend for THIS class. 100 levels with him are a breeze.
Good professor, need to pay attention in class though. Recommend if interested in political science.
Dr. A is straight up the worst professor I've had so far at UWEC. He is extremely hard to understand, and doesn't explain the paper or what tests will be on either. Along with this he rarely responds to emails... Would NOT recommend
I enjoyed the class and his teaching methods. He was available for questions after classes most of the time which was great. Also, he can be very funny if you get to know him. Great class in general
Very knowledgeable in his field(s)!
Great class if you are interested. I like Ali
Great teacher, let the class work on its own. Sometimes hard to understand, but very knowledgable about the subject matter
HORRIBLE teacher. I am a 3.90 Honors Student that has never struggled with tests. Despite attending every lecture, reading and RE-reading the books, and researching everything on the study guide, I still nearly failed his first two tests. The average scores were 70% and 60%. Do NOT take even if he's the only option.
Ali is very knowledgeable and willing to help you if you ask. Personally I felt he spoke clearly but if you have trouble with accents reconsider taking him. Absolutely study for his exams! He gives the q's ahead of time, take advantage of that. Sometimes he's not super clear on what he expects but follow along in class and study and you'll do fine
I took an entry level class with him, and it was stupid difficult. His tests were difficult, and I failed some of them despite studying multiple hours every night for his class. You're expected to knowunderstand complex concepts which rarely (if ever) are mentioned in lectures or the text readings. Incredibly intelligent man, poor professor.
I like the guy personally but he is very poor at speaking English making the him and the class tough to understand. Was harder than a regular 100 level course. Would recommend taking with Hill but he is fine as a teacher. Never have homework but the tests are tough.
Really tough class, enough said.
Abootalebi seems like a nice guy, but he wasn't a very good teacher. His lectures are him reading huge blocks of text off a word document on the projector. Not very engaging. He really pushes his own point of view in class, not very objective teacher. And for a 100 level class I thought the tests were harder than necessary Take Hill instead for 122
Maybe it was because there were 20 of us in a lecture hall meant for 100 students, but this class was just uncomfortable. He was always knowledgeable about the topic, it just wasn't always very easy to follow. Maybe I'd take another class with him, but I would definitely have to put more effort into it.
He seems to know what he's talking about, it's just difficult to understand him. His notes are also really unclear. He also doesn't really follow the textbook or syllabus. There are 4 multiple choice tests and then a final research paper. The tests aren't difficult if you study well.
Worst professor at UWEC. You will not learn a thing. He's expectations are extremely unreasonable. He is also extremely bias in his view. Take any other course, even if it makes you stay an extra semester.
Very difficult to follow, would not take again.
Ali has no teaching style. He jumps around so much that half the time he's not even talking about whatever is in his notes. His notes are extremely unclear and half the time you're lost while in class. Also, he has a very strong accent so if you're not good with understanding accents you probably shouldn't take the class. Overall, AWFUL.
Ali is a terrible professor. He is never clear with what he wants from you, and you'll never know where you stand in his class. His lectures are extremely boring and generally have no point. Honors classes are supposed to be discussion-based, but we never say a word. Don't waste your time. You'll end up with a bad grade and no new information.
Would not recommend. Hard to follow, only graded on 4 tests, hard to approach. If you arent a political science major and can avoid this class, do it.
Difficult to understand. Far, far, far too demanding of a professor for a 100 level POLS class. The tests are ridiculously hard and your only grade is based on four of them. Attendance isn't mandatory, but reading and attendance are the only way to hope to get a good grade in his class -- AVOID.
This was the hardest class I ever took. First, his tests. The average on exams were F's then D's. I got B's and As by reading all required D2L articles and taking intensive notes (focus on vocab or bold terms and large concepts). He randomly takes attendance, but you should attend because lectures supplement textbooks. He also offers review guides
At first, this class was lecture heavy, but then it turned into debates. Students chose a country and represented their foreign policy. We only had to submit two ten-page papers.
You've probably already seen but AVOID THIS CLASS!!!! I have always had straight As and Bs but have done terrible on these tests. Professor A does not cover what is going to be on tests at all and spends most of the class time ripping on America and making useless Trump jokes. Worst professor and teacher I have ever had in my entire life.
I wish I could select more than just three tags to describe this class. I would add Lecture Heavy and Get Ready To Read. There are two textbooks for this class, both in which you must read at least three times. There are outside reading on D2L, the accent is difficult to understand, professor goes off topic and the test will not make since to many
Abootalebi is a great professor. He's witty and knowledgeable. You can learn a lot from the guy in lectures, but he's very difficult to understand sometimes. Tests are based on reading more than lecture, but both sets of material are represented. Tests make up 100% of the grade for the class, so study hard the week before and you'll be ready.
He knows a lot but has a super thick accent. He reads off a Word document and has lecture guide. Loves to bash Trump and goes off track most(all) of the time. Two textbooks and online readings. Your only hope is that you have a student mentor. I leaned more from the mentor then Abootalebi. Tests are harder then they should be. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
He is hard to understand and lectures are very boring. The material on tests is very random, and not covered well in class. If you want to do well on a test, go to SI. He sends many emails a day about current events that are annoying because you don't need to read them. Also he runs his lecture off of a word document and it is very unorganized.
Ali is a nice guy but horrible professor. His lectures are hard to understand because its an overload of information. Focus on the book because it makes a more sense. Youll get confused a lot, I would not take this class unless its your last resort.
Dr. A treated this class like it was for politics majors, which it was not. 85% of our grade was exams, which were very difficult and hard to study for. I would not recommend taking him for this class.
There are 4 exams, each 22% of your grade, along with participation, which is 12%. Avoid this professor at all costs. He is non-engaging, & difficult to read. Exams are based off the lectures, (which is literally an uncompleted Word document that you fill in), textbook readings, and other articles. The 1st & 2nd exam class averages were 65 & 59%
One of the biggest mistakes was taking this class. Not only can you not understand his accent but his notes dont make much since either. Every class is just lecturing the whole time and your grade is only based on tests, which are awful, he gives you notes and a ton of reading and from them you need to know exact dates, quotes, names, etc.
Please avoid this professor no matter what, his class is not worth taking. I was just a freshman, not expecting this 122 level class to be difficult; however, your entire grade was based off of four tests that were 70 questions long. He is very lecture heavy (with a heavy accent too so you can't even understand him). He can be funny at times...
do not take this class. i like a challenging class but this class personally was hard for me to succeed in. the professor is hard to understand and he expects you to read an unbearable amount of material. the class is treated as though it is for political science majors when it is a 100 level class. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. A's POLS 122 class has many issues. The most frustrating one is that very little of what is talked about in class is not explained and the micro details of the topics not covered in lecture are what you're tested on. Also, you're required to buy one of his textbooks that's over $100 and you CAN NOT RETURN IT. Waste of money and time.
Dr. A is a good professor, but it's not an easy class. You will be required to do the readings and attend lectures. He has a thick accent, but if you ask him to repeat himself, or explain more, he will. He is passionate about politics and you can learn a lot from him. Do the readings, attend class, take notes, meet with him and ask questions.
Has a thick accent so the lectures can be difficult to understand most of the time. Grades based on 4 test each being 22% of your grade with attendance being the leftover percentage. Class is disorganized and he runs it off a word document but if you read the textbooks you can survive without going to class. Always offers extra credit on tests.
His lectures are long and fairly dull given off of a word document, his accent also makes it difficult to understand him at times. He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches but doesn't make the material interesting or engaging. Exams are essay only and you need to be very specific.
The main problem with this class is the lecture. Going to his class basically means 50 minutes of him reading off a word document that has a very unorganized list of topics that are sometimes off-context. This is a problem because he gives a lot of materials to read and it'll be hard to figure out which ones are going to be on the test.
I took a class with this prof about 20 years ago. It was my first intro to the idea of globalization. It was memorable. I don't remember my grade but the class was especially challenging since I took it while I was still in highschool.
In this class, you're only graded on exams, but he does provide some extra credit. His classes are all lectures. Go to the review sessions! His sort of T.A. goes over the entire exam and let's you know the stuff you need to know and you definitely need to read the course material in order to pass this class.
Very hard to understand with his thick accent. The grade is based on 4 exams, however, they are curved and he does give bonus points. Would not recommend taking this class if I had to.
Dr. A is a great guy and has a great sense of humor. However he is difficult to understand and is a tough grader. On the exams he gives you some options to pick what you want to answer which makes it a bit easier, but he expect you to know it really well. With the books we used, we had to read a lot, so if you dont like reading, avoid the class.
The Class average on our first test was 42%. Lectures are very difficult to understand and comprehend. If your political views do not match his the you better prepare for war in that class. Super difficult for a 3 credit course if you're able to get out of there before it begins then do it. Save yourself a headache and a dread for a semester.
He isn't clear about anything and is so confusing. He literally doesn't explain anything and only gives tests for grades. The tests are so hard and the averages are about 40-50%. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you absolutely need to take it.
Don't take this class. This class is based on only 4 exams. His lectures don't make sense, thick accent. We have to buy his book which is a bit pricey. Overall, if you don't need to avoid this class.
He only has four tests in his class so if you do bad you are screwed. You need to watch the lectures multiple times to pass his class and his accent is very heavy it is so hard to understand him. He has some some extra credit questions on the exams, responds to you fast and is always eager to help. Hard class but nice caringprofessor who means well
Dr. A has a thick accent and his lectures are sometimes rambling, but all you need to do is ask 1 question and he will make sure that by the end of the conversation you understand the topic. There are few grades in the class and you are expected to read a lotthis is a college course after all and Ali respects his students intellect to succeed.
This class was all lectures and tests, no homework was given out, and Ali was not very good at communication. The text book required for this class is written in his own words so if you don't understand lectures the book won't help you either.
He has a strong accent that's hard to understand. I took this fully online and I did not understand his recorded lectures at all. Also your entire grade is only four tests. So easy to fail. Theres a heavy curve but isn't applies until the end so you dont really know where you stand. I did not understand and did not enjoy this at all.
This was an interesting course, and I think that Professor Abootalebi made the course load manageable considering this was only a three week class. As long as you abide by his schedule in the syllabus you will do fine, but he does grade rather harshly during discussions and papers. It is not 100% necessary to read the textbook, but it is helpful.
Professor A is a really kind and nice professor that expects you to put effort into class and to really learn and understand the content. As long as you come prepared to class you should be fine. He has a thick accent but you get used to it after awhile. The text book isn't really needed and won't really be touched on. Overall a great professor.
His lectures are all of the place, and most of it isn't useful. He's funny and stuff but I don't think I really learned anything in this class
Professor Abootalebi was very passionate about world politics and seems to really enjoy teaching. A lot of the complaints are about his accent, but I had no problem understanding him. His lectures can trail off. Some of the material on the 4 exams are never in the lectures. He really wants class participation and reading the textbooks will help.
I have very mixed feelings about pols122. The content itself really isn't anything complicated, but the way it's presented in lecture gave me a headache. You can tell he knows what he's talking about, but I primarily took notes on the book outside of class and gave up on lecture notes.
Pros- Nice guy, accent isn't bad contrary to other reviews. Cons- Assigns a TON of reading (90-100 pages a week), your entire grade rests on 2 exams and a paper, lectures are incredibly boring, doesn't really get the class involved in discussion and just talks the whole time. Never responds to email. If you have to take him, good luck.
Okay so bear with me, you need to put your whole booty into studying for his tests or you won't do well. Bare minimum the quizlet will have at least 150 cards. He seems like a nice enough guy, but I would not recommend taking this class -his notes/lectures dont add up with the tests -he won't assign readings and put that information on the test
Ali is very knowledgeable and nice. However, his exams are tough and are based off of some lecture, his own book, and the rental. Also, his book (which you need to buy if you want to be successful and participate in his class) is around $100 with tax. Slacking off is very easy during lecture but don't if you want to pass.
I was going into this class as a freshman as a Journalism major with a heavy interest in Political science. Therefore i was super excited to take this class. The concepts of the course are your general political science nature. But this professors teaching was awful. His lectures were too jammed packed. The visual aids were below standard.
This class is very hard you have to remember small details for the test and they aren't on textbook materials its about articles you read. There's no assignments so its hard to prepare for test. After 2nd test you will get handle of it. Need time to read a lot and study. Started with a F and ended with a A. He's nice just can't teach to everyone.
The grade in this class is solely based on 4 exams and he only curves the first exam due to it being the first one. Majority of the class gets around 70% on exams. You need to do the weekly readings because many of the exam questions are fill in the blank from the readings. Topics are interesting and he is funny, but just a tough class.
I withdrew from this class purely because of how awful this professor was. The lectures are extremely basic and repetitive but the tests have completely different and far more complex content. Very unaccommodating, even for things like a concussion. He admitted that it's "very frequent" that students fail his tests despite spending hours studying.
Dr. A is funny and he's generous with grading. However, the whole class grade is 4 tests and a 10-page paper with no rubric. Most of my class stopped doing readings or going to lecture because the tests quiz you on random facts he's mentioned once in lecture or his book. I liked Dr. A as a person but his lectures and tests were terrible.
Do not take! Tests don't follow any material or lecture. Way too much reading. Expects irrelevant facts to be remembered for the test. Didn't give anyone an A for group project and there was no guidelines other than length. No feedback ever for grades given. Doesn't answer emails. Hard to understand. Worked way to hard for a bad grade.
Dr. Abootalebi is a nice professor, but his class is based on four exams and a group paper. The tests are based on class presentations (which can be very difficult to follow) and the readings, which comes out to about 30-50 textbook pages per week. A lot of time will be spent outside of class if you want to pass with a high grade.
This class has 4 exams and one group project paper. The exams are okay but I can't definitively say that the material for the exams are covered in class. He also makes you buy his own book, which I can't say was helpful. Lastly, the group paper has no given outlines on what is expected besides the length. No formatting or anything.
Lectures are not engaging, found myself dozing off a lot. Tests are ROUGH. Pretty nice if you ask him something after class/over email. He sends a lot of cool articles about current events, which is neat. SO much material covered, more or less impossible to retain most of it. If you can take this with someone else, do that.
I cannot un-recommend someone more. Dr A is a nice person but a horrible professor. Lectures are incredibly boring and unorganized; he tends to ramble on for long periods of time which makes them very hard to get through. Tests are based on random facts he mentions once or material in his book he makes you buy. A hard class to make yourself go to.
Spews heavily biased political nonsense during class. No in class work, homework or preparation for exams which are the only grade in the class.
Absolutely awful professor. Will NEVER take any class with him EVER again. All semester there were two things that were graded. One being the exam. Few things he taught were on the exam and it only consisted of small outside bits of information he MIGHT have mentioned once briefly. No university in their right mind could or should hire this man.
6 assignment for the whole class all summitive
The lectures can be disorganized, but the professor is a nice guy. Tests are tough and focus on obscure details. Unstuck ai helped me prep effectively.
No words can describe how awful this professor was. Could barely understand what he says and anything he writes look similar to hieroglyphics. He claims I cheated on an exam when I received an 85%. Also makes you buy two of his books he wrote for >$100 that have NOTHING to do with any test or exam he gives. Do not buy his book and give him $$$.
Never NEVER take a class from him. Lectures are horrible and hard to follow, and the tests are crazy. Only summative assignments.
He was awful. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is super bias on political opinions, there is very little assignment, lectures are all over the place, exams are random and nothing to do with the course, he claims I cheated on an exam when I did so so, now has dropped my grade from an A to a B. When he has no proof I cheated, because I didn't.
Overall Ali R. Abootalebi is an awful professor. He is difficult to understand in class, he makes you purchase his textbook. He expects you to know terms that aren't expected in a level 100 class. He also makes you write a group 10 page paper with little to no direction.
This dude made you buy his textbook, had such an accent and a lisp you can't understand a word, straight up lied about how attendance is weighed in the syllabus (claimed to only be 5% of total grade, ended up being more like 20), and tried to use anti cheating software and marked down people who were taking tests completely honestly.
Attendance in mandatory, make sure to participate in class. If you meet with him it makes class easier. Buy the textbook used off someone else to save money.
The average grade for the class was a 65% for all 4 exams. You will learn a ton if you want to, it is just a ton of work.
Runs the course like a graduate course and grades like it too. You will learn a ton if you want to, just be aware it will take ~2-3h a day of work. He is a very knowledgeable professor but sometimes has a difficult time explaining it.
Pretty bad professor. He makes you buy the $100 book he wrote and is not good at explaining things. I would drop the class while you can. There were times where he would just forget about class and then get upset if students didn't stay to wait for him.
He's honestly a terrible teacher, you can't understand him he's super biased and shouldn't be allowed to be a teacher due to this. he assumes people are cheating when they get higher then a 60% on his super biased exams and is overall a terrible person.
dont take this guy
super biased bad teacher.
very bad teaching style do not reccomend him.
Assumes people cheat for doing alright on his biased exams.
do not reccomend
4 exams and a project are the only graded work and hashly grades
really bad
very biased teacher doesnt have any work only exams that are biased
hard to understand
I do not reccomend him hes very biased
id rather lose 20 credits than take this guy
Test questions are based strictly on his textbook, not the lectures. Hard to understand and does not allow clear feedback or answer emails. Feels like you are being set up to fail.
