Very kickback and straightforward. Definitely recommend anyone to take his class.
He's super nice and laid back. Most of the class is usually discussion on the readings from the book or his ppt. He's open minded to any opinion and it was really enjoyable to be in his class. Attendance is 3 free days and after that its -10 pt for every absence. 4 easy writing responses, 1 reflection, 3 exams and 100 pt ec writing assignment :)
Super laid back Professor but in a really good way. Class is based on mainly his lectures so go to class as much as possible. Writing assignments were super easy if you paid attention and tests were a breeze. Super knowledgeable about all the information and relates really well with his students. Would definitely take again. Highly recommended!!
He is funny and his lectures are very awesome!
He's an amazing professor. No homework. He gives you quizzes but assigns a study guide which are literally the quizzes. I did not get the material we read but he assigns additional reading that makes the original text much more easier to understand. Lectures are never boring and so intriguing that time flies by fast.
Usually with professors this laid-back it's hard to learn much, but the class discussions really helps with retention. Prof Mohsen is funny and is very helpful. He likes to make sure everybody understands the information and readings. Some homework, a few quizzes, and great extra credit.
Mohsen is an amazing professor. He's very easy going and fun to have as an instructor. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting a passable and interesting class!
Professor Mohsen is just Pure Awesomeness! His class is a ton of fun and this is my second class I have taken from him. My favorite part is that he cares what you believe and your thoughts in your papers. Philosophy can be a very challenging subject but my fears went away as soon as I realized this class is more abou free thinking then names/dates.
Professor Mohsen is a diamond in the rough. He is super understanding & knowledgeable. Philos 7 was about critical thinking in pop culture, so it's difficult to lead a discussion when touching on controversial subjects. But he led the class with dignity and respect for everyone, while being a friendly yet commanding presence. 10/10 would take again
Fun class, very interesting class discussions. Must take.
overall this class was a great class Professor Mohsen is very chill and laid back and his assignments are very clear. In this class we have five 2 page writing assignments and 3 exams and every assignment is spread out through out the semester so we was never overloaded with work oh yeah we even watched several documentaries in class
The guy is great. If you love to spark a conversation from his subject matter, it'll be a breeze
SMC is lucky to have him. His teaching style won't bore you as he challenges you to think outside the box, express your beliefs diplomatically, and expand your understanding of various philosophies. He goes above and beyond what is expected for his students and I would have taken all of his classes if I could. You won't regret.
Such a wonderful professor! I adored him and his class. He loves what he is teaching and really includes his students in the conversation. He is so humble and open to everything students want to bring forth to the class. I learned so much from his lectures and the interesting readings he would have us do. Very available during office hours.
I took his Schoalrs class this Fall and loved it! He is an awesome guy that is open to any opinion, so genuine! He is easy to talk to and wants to help his students succeed. I went all the time to him for office hours and he was always flexible with my schedule. I loved his class tremendously and learned so much !! Highly recommend
Super genuine guy that is engaging and his lectures challenge you to think outside the box. Discussion based class that is fun to participate in where there is no fear in sharing thoughts. Always helpful and encouraging. He has 3 essays, a debate paper, and participation points. Awesome professor, engaging and thought-provoking class!
I have never met such professor with great dedication and passion for his students and his teaching. He is quite young, and he surely knows how to keep his class in a good vibe. I personally learned a lot from his super interesting lectures, and he is always available during his office hours and will email you back as soon as possible. MUST TAKE!
I can honestly say he is one of my top 3 fav professors at SMC! He truly cares about his students and wants to make an impact. He is open-minded to any opinion! You have 4 essays and the workload is manageable, he is easy to talk to and get a hold of. I went to him for help during his office hours; emailed him an hour before and got a response right away! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Mohsen's a funny guy. He enjoys creating discussion between students. A little absent minded at times and makes you question if he even wants to be there, but don't we all feel like that from time to time? Anyways, take the class to have fun and get a guaranteed good grade if you do all the essays and participate.
This professor is amazing. He's super accessible and friendly. The philo 7 class is pretty easy if you keep up on the assignments. I definitely recommend this course to anyone who needs to take a philosophy class.
P. Mohsen is the best Professor at SMC! He's so caring and kind. He truly puts effort in helping you out on your essays to achieve a good grade. I wish I could take him for all my philosophy classes but he doesn't teach all of them. He's pretty laid back, however coming to class and turning in essays on time is strictly mandatory. NO REGRETS AT ALL
Very easy A. Easy grader. Completely covers the outside reading material, so you dont really have to read to get an A. Extra credit opportunity. Easy exams.
Class is basically consists of lectures and class discussions. 3 Papers due with available extra credit assignments. Attendance is logged in a binder passed around at the beginning of class so don't be late if you are you have to document if you're late or leaving early. Normal amount of reading and very fair teacher. Very interesting lectures!
If you do not like participating with others, do not take this class. There is a lot of group discussion amongst each other. Attendance is mandatory, but he allows you to be absent up to 3x with no point deduction. Plus, his lectures are very interesting! So far, the best professor at SMC. Why can't all professors be like him?
Prof. Mohsen is an amazing professor, and definitely one without whom I would not be the person I am today. He is very knowledgeable and his lectures are fun and informative. His classes are centered on discussion, and I think that helps get students involved, continually thinking about important topics. One of the best professors at SMC.
Really easy class, great professor. There are about 4 essays per semester, but they're easy to get an A on.
Awesome professor! Professor Mohsen is caring, easy-going, patient, and knows how to teach philosophy. Makes it relevant to life today. There's lots of reading, but it's philosophy, what do you expect? Also, weekly quizzes and five papers total. Loved this class!
Professor Ali is my favorite professor at SMC. His lectures are very clear. quiz every night before class online (2 points) based on the reading. Easy A if you do the work, he takes a long time to grade papers. There are a lot group discussions with classmates, I would recommend taking this class with a friend. 2 essays, 3 reflections, 1 E.C.
Professor Mohsen's class consists of 2 essays, 3 reflections, and an E.C. He really wants you to succeed in class. All the readings were interesting and fun! He is a really nice person.
Professor Mohsen is a great professor. His class was my favorite out of all the classes I took this semester. If you're worried that a scholars philosophy class might be too hard, don't worry! Just do the reading, participate, and turn in your assignments on time. I recommend getting physical copies of the texts, but you can find them online too.
Great professor. Do your assignments and you will pass. He will always help you if you ask and is great at responding to messages. If his class is available I highly recommend you take it.
Trust me guys, do not hesitate to take this class. Easiest A I have ever gotten. FACTS
really easy and interesting class! we had no tests, had weekly reading quizzes (he didn't care if we got some questions wrong, he said he cared more about whether we understood the material and we could explain our answer choices and still get some points) and had an extra credit due at the end of the semester worth like half an essay.
Professor Mohsen is excellent at his job. He makes the lectures very interesting & engages us by doing polls. It's fun to see what the class thinks & our discussions are great. 10/10 recommend you take him if you are interested in philosophy & want to have fun. There are no tests, just essays but you can score high if you pay attention to lectures
Professor Mohsen really cares about his students. Your grade is essentially based on essays, but if you meet with him during office hours and apply his corrections, you are guaranteed an A! He grants extensions and has no exams!! Highly recommend taking him and his class if you can. Also has interesting discussions.
Don't walk- RUN and take this class right now. This is the second class I've taken of his and I'm not a philosophy major. He is so knowledgeable about philosophy and he adds onto whatever comment you make so it's very comfortable to contribute to class discussions. Super understanding about extensions. My favorite class I've taken at SMC.
Ali Mohsen is great. I dont really care much for philosophy but he made it really interesting. Has a reading quiz before class (3-4 ?s). uses iclicker for attendance & points. Has 3 assignments which are 2-3 pages essayseasy and straight to the point. 2 actual essays which are 3 pages eacheasy. Overall easy A + great Professor. A must take.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He's so open minded and genuinely wants to hear everybody's opinion. I thought the class was gonna be boring but it was one of my favorites. It really makes you open your eye and think deeply.
Professor Ali is by far the best philosophy professor you can take at SMC. I was a bit nervous and hesitant to take this class but soon realized it was a great decision to take this class. You will definitely learn alot and be able to apply what he teaches to the real world. Homework and assignments are not difficult at all. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Prof. Mohsen is an incredible professor and an even more stellar human being. He's kind, attentive, knowledgeable, empathetic, funny, & all-around fun person to converse with. Wish I took more of his classes. He opened my mind to the mucky matrix that we're living and has also facilitated the expansion of my philosophical horizons. Thank you Prof!
Professor Mohsen's new system is kind of like giving you enough rope to hang yourself with- he has really laxed due dates. You really need to reference the powerpoints and specific texts he has you cite- if you don't follow his prompts you will fail every assignment. Participate in the group projects with ppl that aren't lazy and you're golden.
Mr. Mohsen is amazing! Took his class as a GE course and thought it was gonna be boring but it was very good! First philosophy class I actually enjoyed! His lectures make you think and he actually cares about your opinion! Very flexible on due dates and an amazing professor overall! You should take his class, Ill actually miss it
As a more right-wing student, his class was almost as left as it gets, but it was still a great learning experience. A very respectable and kind professor, the class was a pleasure throughout. He's very lenient and the class doesn't pose much pressure. As long as you're putting in the work and effort is shown, you'll get an A without a doubt.
Professor Mohsen is incredibly smart and extremely accommodating. Not only is he an amazing professor, but also a wonderful person. He is very understanding and a super generous grader. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures and my writing skills greatly improved by the end of the semester. I have taken two courses with him so far and hope to take more!
Mohsen is one of the most lax professors at SMC. He is incredibly lenient with deadlines because he understand life comes up, and he allows you to miss class 3 times a semester. Class time is lecture and discussion and most of your grade consists of 5-6 papers, usually 800-900 words. He gives chances to resubmit too. Taking him again next semester.
Professor Mohsen is a very kind person, he is accommodating to his students and relates to them. He is not opinionated and he is open-minded which makes class discussions on a delicate subject more relaxed. His lectures and class content are very interesting, I am learning a lot from this class. I feel savvier and learned to check all information.
Be ready for a very left-wing class, this coming from a moderate student. Other than this though he did listen to students with differing opinions from his own which is more than I can say for most SMC professors. He was also a really nice professor. The only thing that would keep me from taking his class again is he can be sometimes confusing.
Very understanding and compassionate. Going remote was tough for everyone but also Prof Ali, but he truly took time to listen to students (even before going remote). Definitely exposed me to a lot of information I wouldn't have accessed without this class.
Philos 7 class is an absolute must take. Prof. Mohsen is one of the best teachers at SMC. He is kind, caring, and extremely knowledgeable. I learned a a lifetime's worth of knowledge in 16 weeks. I'm really going to miss this class.
Cares a lot about students. Nice. Recommend. goes extra mile. Great professor
Great professor! Truly cares about his students. Took over the summer during the 6 week course - I did spend over 20 hours a week on the class, but it was a fun class and he's very clear on grading. Seems like almost everyone gets an A or high B if you show that you can critically think and have reasons to support your argument. Highly recommend.
Professor Mohsen is a kind and understanding professor but his class was heavy and overwhelming. For the essay's he does not provide enough feedback for you to improve, study guides are brutal, quizzes. (READ THE BOOK or you won't pass). You work hard for this class! Don't recommend if you have other heavy classes it will be difficult to manage.
5quizzes,4essays,6discussions,2flipgrids,1dialogue. All this work is time consuming! So if you have another heavy class I say don't take this teacher and take another one or if you work full time. If not I recommend joining a group to help you! He does give extensions but not for the quiz! He mainly focuses on the essay. interesting lectures tho.
This is the second class I am taking with Professor Mohsen. He is a caring, layback teacher in a good way. Very good and interesting lectures. Always here to help, very accessible out of class. Quick to answer emails. His class content is well put together, taking his class will only make you savvier and more aware of your world surrounding.
This is my second time taking Mohsen and he is a disgustingly amazing professor. He is super lenient with deadlines- he gets college life is tough and busy. Super easy grader as well, follow the rubric you get an A. HE is also very open to different views, he will not shut you down if his view differs from you. Such a nice professor please TAKEhim
Professor made class interesting by teaching philosophy where we can use in todays society. very open to help students and help them the best possible way wether being through their grades or help with understanding the material. Definitely best philosophy professor.
Ali was always super chill and understanding. He definitely wants all his students to do well and the homework was pretty minimal. Definitely easy to get an A in his class!
There are very few professors that make this topic interesting, and Prof. Mohsen is one of them. Don't take advantage of this class, actually take time with the material and care. Put in the work and you'll receive results. Best prof. ever.
Absolutely amazing professor, never had one like him before. You can tell he truly cares for his students and he's open to ALL opinions (yes all, ik crazy). The only "bad" thing is that there's a lot of hw/reading so if ur taking a lot of classes, dont take this. Other than that, best person and professor ever. PLS take him for philosophy
Really easygoing professor. There are no hard deadlines and if you do minimal reading the assignments are easy to understand. A lot of the discussion and essays are about connecting older philosophy to contemporary issues, which I found a lot of fun.
This class requires you to read a lot of dense material. Weekly discussions and lectures, and 3 papers. Everything is based on the readings and lectures. His lectures are very helpful, so don't skip them. I learned a lot about Greek Philosophy and how it applies to real world events. A great way to fulfill a GE during the summer.
Hands down best professor so far, very honest, he cuts through the bs and wants students to actually apply the theories to the real world and current events. Has long lectures that are recorded, and really need to spend time understanding each theory. Lots of writing, weekly long discussion posts, but very engaging! Definitely recommend!
he's such an amazing professor, i HIGHLY recommend taking him!! he's very nice & such an open-minded person. he wants all of his students to succeed and made philosophy very interesting. the coursework isn't difficult, but some assignments may take time and his lectures are very enjoyable, you can attend them live or can view them on your own time.
This class is not an easy A whatsoever, I have never been so stressed in a class that has nothing to do with my major. There is very little work so assignments are worth a lot , one off day and your grade drops a whole letter. Mohsen is kind and hes quite funny but if you are just trying to get your GEs over with dont take this class .
Wont attend his class anymore, Lots of reading and tough grader and no extra credit on this class, workload is pretty good, there are 6 discussion post and 3 essay.
Took an 8-week version of Philosophy 3 which made it fast-paced. Reading is important, but much of the reading is challenging because Plato and Socrates are tough reads. His lectures and PowerPoints because they have the most important info. Most points came from 3 essay's which he grades easily if you use evidence. He grants extensions a lot.
Professor Mohsen by all means is a celebrated professor who is funny and discusses interesting topics. However, the issue I have with him is the minimal amount of work given and how point heavy each discussion and essay are. You don't get remarks or comments from Professor Mohsen which makes it considerably difficult to figure out how to get that A
Professor Mohsen was such a great professor! He was always available if you needed help, excellent at responding to emails quickly, and did a great job teaching the material. Rather than just straight lectures, he does an amazing job engaging the students with discussions. Overall, Philosophy 1 was one of my favorite courses I have taken at SMC!
He is a great teacher and he is there to help. Was super nice and gives extensions on the essays with reducing grades.
Nice dude, never hesitates to give an extension if you ask for one, even for the final. Put in reasonable effort and get an A. He makes a big deal about watching the lectures, but I skipped many and still excelled. I suspect that if he thinks you're watching the lectures, he will grade more leniently, so at least sign in for recorded lectures.
Do not take this class if you don't like to read! i found out the hard way. The material is complicated and discussions and essays too. He will give a week extension on 2/3 essays, not on the last one. This class is interesting, but there is way too much reading, and Hes a very tough grader...
One of the best phil teachers I've ever had. His lectures are comedic and engaging, which makes the content easier to retain. Great class discussions, and he's very gracious with extensions. Yes, there is a good amount of reading. However if you're taking a philosophy class and NOT expecting to read a lot? That's on you. I absolutely recommend him.
Ali is one of THE nicest professors, he seriously cares so much about his students and what he teaches. Watch the zooms because he works really hard on them to try and give students the most he can out of this class... 3 essays, discussions every week, the class is a breeze if you just do the hw, he's so nice and lets you talk about your beliefs
4 for difficulty bc the content is tricky + there's tons of reading. He's genuinely a great prof and clearly works hard for his students; I'm tough when it comes to these ratings, but he 100% deserves the 5/5. He's funny, his lectures are casual/entertaining, + he's more lenient w/ grading if he knows you've put in the work (harsher on essays tho)
The class consists of discussion posts and essays. Be prepared to read a fair chunk. He is very knowledgeable and will make you think. This class will change your perspective on technology. He allows one-week extensions on any assignment no questions asked, as many times as you want. The online structure is very nice and doesn't overwhelm you.
Great professor, very clear communication, responds to the emails fast and really cares to help you understand the work. Lectures are entertaining and fun, the reading is not overwhelming. Weekly discussions and two essays, he drops the lowest discussion and lowest essay, plus you can extend dateline anytime. He is amazing, take his class!
Philo 3 can really improve your communication and critical thinking skills. It might not clear all your doubts and chart a clear path for the future, but its really a very good space to think deeply about a lot of the issues facing the world. The class discussions have diverse voices, and some are very inspiring. Highly recommended to all majors.
Awesome professor, but don't think about plagiarism; he will catch and report you. He's extremely accessible and always offers extensions. His lectures were very enjoyable. He always uploads a new one every time and doesn't reuse lectures, unlike other professors. I'd take him again if I had to.
I took Professor Mohsen's class in 2019, but I wanted to write a review because I've been putting it off for 4 years now. He is such an engaging, funny, and all around wholesome professor. Definitely one of the best I've ever had at SMC. TAKE HIM!
Mohsen's class on early philosophers is somewhat difficult but well worth it if you're genuinely interested in philosophy.
This was probably the best professor I have had so far in my college experience. There is a lot of reading but none of it is boring and his lectures usually explain most of it. I am not a philosophy major but this class was super interesting and made me learn a lot without trying too hard.
Sweetest prof, almost regret not putting in more effort. He allowed me to make up like 3 assignments as I had fallen behind. Weekly discussions, "digestion" papers, and 2 essays. He does drop lowest score for all 3. Really nice, zooms are optional! Take him as the subject is interesting!
Absolutely loved him. He's funny and caring during lectures even though they weren't mandatory. You can schedule meetings with him at any time and he is very lenient with late work. Assignments were very straight forward and really made the semester great. Highly recommend!
Don't take this class with a science that you need a lot of study time for. He gives you 2 essays A WEEK. Not to mention he is so strict on AI - he makes you send him your google docs so he can see your editing history. And on top of that, he says that he puts your work in GPTZero and if its over 20%, you get a 0 on that assignment. Time consuming.
If you want an easy scholars class- not the course for you. He got VERY STRICT after COVID and after AI came out. I put MY OWN WRITING in ZeroGPT (what he uses to check) and it came out 27% AI - FALSE! So unfair what is going on with this world....Now I am scared to turn in MY OWN ORIGINAL ESSAYS because he will give them a zero. Save yourself.
Professor Mohsen is fantastic! I'm not a Philosophy major and had no background in it, yet thoroughly enjoyed taking his class. He's reasonable with the amount of work assigned and bit of reading per week. I'd estimate 7-9 hours time commitment for this class. Listen to his "podcast" lectures as they make everything super clear and understandable.
A LOT of reading, but its Philosophy so that's to be expected. Your brain will feel pushed to its limits against what we consider the norms of society. Luckily, Professor Ali gives amazing lectures and it very supportive and accessible for his students. Show up, do the work, you'll do well. Good choice for your Philosophy Professor.
avoid this professor unless you're ready for two essays a week. he has you type everything on a google doc and share it with him so he can see typing history and check for AI. my writing was flagged despite no use of AI. it felt like he wanted to get us in trouble rather than teach. i only recommend this class if you're a philosophy major.
He runs everything through an unreliable AI generator. I used it several times after getting flagged and the change of one word could change a whole paragraph from 99% ai generated to 1%. The class started easy but every week he gives an analysis paper and discussion which can feel overwhelming if you are in other classes. Slow grader.
AMAZEING BEST CLASSSSS
Refused to even grade my papers since he claimed I put sources "that didn't even exist" and gave me a flat out 0. Also an AI fanatic that falsely accuses students for using AI. If you want a difficult professor and a hard time be sure to take this class.
This was an interesting class as it dealt with the topic of technology (Philosophy of technology). But this has to be the most rigorous class I have taken yet because there's quite a bit of reading and writing every week. For almost four months, every week, I had to set aside few days just to write for this class.
The best professor I have had. His passion shines through his course which is set up quite clear and captivating. I thought philosophy was dead, until I took this class. Great stuff.
This Professor was a little confusing. His class was alright but it is very hard and stressful. Get ready for lots of writing and reading. You will learn. He also believes everything is AI and will also falsely accuse you if he suspects your writing is too good? His jokes are also incredibly insensitive but sometimes funny. Good luck!
Took this class online over winter. You can tell this professor really cares about his students and the material. He puts a lot of effort into the lectures and the material, making it fun and engaging. While there was a lot of reading and some of them were pretty difficult to get through I will say it did make me think and was pretty interesting.
Professor Mohsens lectures are amazing! Definitely make it easy to do the homework and engage with the content we're learning about. One week no questions asked extensions on assignments are a lifesaver. You can really tell he cares about the material he is teaching and if you watch the lectures you will do great!
Super easy class, no midterm or final. Lectures are super interesting and engaging.
Please don't take him unless you want to spend your semester struggling and hating yourself for taking him. I literally spend 1-1.5 days/week on his ridiculously long&hard readings and then write a 800 word analysis and 400 word discussion after that w replies of course. I'm a math major and should really focus on my major classes instead I dread o
This class is for someone who likes philosophy and enjoys writing about it. Every week you have a reply for a discussion board due that is a couple paragraphs and he gives you a week extension to turn it in. As long as you submit the work the class is completely reasonable, the prof is super nice and he explains everything in the lectures.
As a STEM major, I took this course for GE. - Easy class, so I could focus on the hard classes. - I learned a lot. The curriculum is fascinating. Changes the way you think! - Rubric is easy to follow. Each week, 1 discussion (400 words) and 1 analysis (600 words). If you put a little effort, expect a 100%. - 1 week extension on all HW!
the only assignments he gives is two short essays a week and they are very simple and easy. this is a great teacher very easy. no final in this class.
This class wasn't too bad. The only assignments are a syllabus quiz, introduction video and a discussion (400-600 words) and an analysis (600-800 words) every week. He is strict on AI use so be careful. The writing assignments do get annoying and they are time consuming. If you're in other demanding classes be sure to manage your time well.
Super straightforward. 14 weeks of class, two mini essays per week (1 reading analysis and 1 discussion post w/ responses) that add up to about 1000 words a week. Late policy is a 1 week extension, I was always a week behind but otherwise stayed on top of it and was fine. Lectures are interesting and super cool professor!
