I think he's making the material a lot harder to understand than it has to be. I find him hard to understand. He doesn't answer questions or clarify anything. Watch out for "interpert your findings" after the questions on the test.

Ali is actually a decent teacher. One of the best at UCFV.
He's a really nice guy. As a teacher, he's a bit hard to understand, because the material is difficult, but he provides EXCELLENT notes, and works through a lot of examples. If you do a bit of work, he makes getting good grades easily obtainable!
Best teacher i have had, goes very slowely, and will explain anything you have difficulty with. Is very well prepared for class, and keeps you with him the whole time.
Very clear and easy to learn from. He is always willing to help and his notes are very easy to understand. He teaches you several ways to do the questions and you can choose the way you are most comfortable using. He is also a very nice guy/ fair marker.
excellent teacher
Great professor! Explains very well, makes material very easy to understand.
how do u understand what this guy says?? come on
Whats a steam plot? Get with it dude, stop freaking out the students, if they ask a question let them finish instead of saying "you have a problem with numbers" This guy sucks... save your money and get someone else.
Ali has excellent notes for class premade for you. I print them off and write extra stuff on them as he goes along. He is fairly clear. He does have a British-Iranian accent, so if you're not used to accents you may have to get used to him speaking. I don't mind personally.
If you pay attention he is a pretty good teacher- Will give you part marks if u attempt something- i hate math, but would take another with him-
one word describes Ali....HORRIBLE....HE RATES HIMSELF...that is how he got good ratings...his quizes are hard...tests are hard....the final was TORTURE...i'd rather put salt in cuts from a rusty hand saw...anyone that has actually had him for Math will NEVER MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN!!!
Ali was an excellent teacher, who had great notes and was an easy marker. If you think his tests are hard - it must have been your first college class, because they were the SAME questions from the homework. It only gets harder! I would definently take his classes again!
If you showed up (which I failed to do), you will easily understand and learn. He is a GOOD teacher, but the subject sucks. He's a typical geek, but you gotta love him for it...
He is a good Math Prof, huge improvement, the online notes are great long story short we need more math profs like him hes very helpful and rember you get what you put in.
didn't like his style of teaching, really hard to understand, and wasn't very approachable when asking questions in class, most of the time he wouldn't clearly answer the question anyways.
His notes are very clear to understand, the use of the T i83 Calc. is great. At first i was not happy to have class with him but im so glad i did becuase hes about a 100 time better then the other stat profs!!
Wretched!
AWESOME, gives u notes that are worthy of writing..exams are fair and is an overall super understandable math professor..hope he teaches calc one of these days.
Ali is an excellent teacher. I would definitly take him for stats again!
My uncle died the week before the exam and my grandmother died at his funeral on the weekend a couple days before the final exam. Her funeral was scheduled at the same time as his final and he refused to change when I could write the exam. Easily the rudest professor I've had the displeasure of meeting.
i love ali! nicest teacher, most helpful ever!
Good prof who teaches very well. However, he gave us a really long lecture about how we shouldn't talk in class, please, we're not in grade 2. Also, he decided to take the online notes down the day of the test. That day was the only time I had to make my formula sheet, for ****s sake that screwed me over.
I am a very strong math student, but his teaching style made this class very difficult for me.
Very difficult to understand the course content, gave out notes and then read them.
he's ok
Crazy dude that you can never understand. He goes insane when people talk in his class. But he is a super easy marker and pretty much makes you pass. Plus he rocks a pretty dope gold watch.
he goes out of his way to help you succeed!!! A+
Very very dedicated teacher. Will do anything he can to help you understand. He does have a pretty strong accent which makes it a little bit difficult at times, but he will often repeat himself which gives you the time to figure out what he's saying
cannot comprehend a word he says...he repeats himself a million times...but still cannot comprehend a word he says. Worst teacher I have ever had.
Great math teacher! EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED! If you ever get stuck on something, here's there to help. Great office hours too. If you have a choice, and don't mind getting used to a east india accent, he's the one to take!
Ali is an awesome teacher! Goes over everything very well, wants everyone to do well! I highly recommend him and he is a good way to get a high mark.
Ali is a Stats Wizard. Mildly frustrating, spends same time calculating the average as crazy multi-step problem. Office hours, I feel like I'm wasting his time. Have a question? He will push through the second explanation only speaking louder, not realizing it, the second time. He is fair, he expects you to be ready and work hard. Stats is tough.
Ali is a fantasic stats teacher. He really wants to help his class understand the material. The class may seem a bit slow, as he goies over everything, but I am a typical bad math student and did extremely well. The class average was at least a B. I would HIGHLY recommend Ali for Stats!
Great prof. He explains everything and goes over examples in class to make sure you understand. Awesome teaching techniques, and overall, one of the best teachers I have ever had.
Ali explains things well but is a nazi when he marks. Every point is worth 1% of your final grade. Quiz worth 10% is 10 marks... BRUTAL MARKER
Ali is a horrible prof. He hates when people talk and will actually treat you as if you are in elementary school. He loves to argue, and if you can't make it to a quiz or something, he has no courtesy and will not let you write it another time. He does do lots of examples which is good, but overall, hes a mean person.
Thankfully I never need another math course...
He really knows what he's talking about, goes over many examples. Very strict though, do not say a word in his class. He also has an accent it hard to explain what its like until you actually talk to him. overall i would recommend taking him for a class.
I am not good at math, i worked hard at this class and did OK, but the instructor is not clear in his communication. He does want you to succeed, and that is good. there are 3 quizs and 3 tests, and then the final exam. Also there are some small assignments. I would not really recommend him, however, I'm not sure if there is anyone better.
He is a knowledgeable prof and explains concepts very clearly. In our class he took best 4 out of 5 quizzes. I would take his other Statistics classes when they are offerred. In my class he seemed good to the students and did not hear my classmates complaining his teaching.
fairly good. but the final is worth 45% YIKES
Ali is a fantastic professor! He expects you to listen, and provides great examples in class. He is very good at answering questions, and overall, a genuine person/teacher. If you put the time in you will do well. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM! Also, don't be scared of the accent, in my opinion it is minor.
Ali knows his stuff and really tries everything he can to help you understand the material. Uses lots of examples and answers any questions in detail. There were a few times when he acted a bit insensitively, but overall seems like a good guy.
Not clear in his communication. He gives you easy assignments and quizzes and he will tell you to expect the same type of questions in the tests. However, you will be surprised how misleading the questions are in the mid-term and final. I don't know if there is better instructor than him. But I can tell you he's not the best and probably the worst
A very good statistics prof. Has a bit of an accent, but absolutely no communication problems - he is very precise and accurate. Excellent in-class examples, and the quizzes/tests mirror the format. Difficult course, but Ali is a good prof to get you through it, and to learn practical applications. Fully recommended.
He acts like a dictator, I am completely stressed out because of him, don't know how I will perform in this subject. I took this particular course its my fav field. i.e. Stats using SAS. But this guy is seriously ruining my life. I am not able to perform well in his test, assignments and all that, even when I am trying too hard from myside.Stressed
Terrible prof. Does not communicate at all. Does not care about his students.
The instructor is not good. He gave us easy examples but test hard.and short time in exam. He don't answer question after class. He always leave classroom first after class is over.
If you are interested in statistics, take his class. He is a great professor, the material is quite difficult but he does a great job explaining it. He is always happy to help during his office hourse with your questions.
Ali is a pretty cool guy. Stats is boring but he does his best to make it interesting. I found the quizzes and tests fair so if you study you're ok.
Pretty clear and concise step-by-step lessons with a lot of in class examples from the textbook. Went over concepts with me multiple times so don't be afraid to speak up or catch him after class if you have trouble. If you can do the tougher book questions you can do the test questions.
Professor Fotouhi is one of my favourite professors. He has a very clear and understandable teaching style. If you learn the in class examples you will pass the course. He will not test you on any material not covered in class time. I would recommend taking any class with this professor.
As long as you study the examples from class, you'll do fine on quizzes and tests
My favourite prof to date. He made a potentially boring and difficult subject very clear, simple, and somewhat interesting. He gives very clear notes, thoroughly explains all concepts, and goes over many examples to prepare students. This class was a breeze to me and I owe that to Ali. Would 100% take a course with him again.
would not take his class again. not very clear. Has a very strong accent. not very helpful.
Wasn't a hard coarse but when it came to the tests he was very unspecific he'd never tell you which formula to use and if you use the wrong formula you'll get the entire question wrong. He once put a question on the quiz that nobody got right because he'd never brought it up in class, and the quiz only had four questions.
Ali is a really incredible person- just not a great prof. The semester started out fine as the course material was very easier.. as the semester progressed the material became more confusing, his tests were harder and he didn't know how to explain things properly.
The beginning of this course was fantastic. Material was easy and clear, actually started to become interested in math (shocker). After the first midterm the course took a 180.. material became confusing, identifying correct uses of formulas was very difficult, + overall it just went downhill. He has a strong accent and gets confusing at times.
The project for this class is pretty tedious and long. He's a fair marker but this class is work I promise you. Also, there's a lot of content in this class that he will go over. Basically, the workload for this class is big. More than I'd expected. I regret taking this course ultimately As for his testing, it's pretty fair.
His tests were straight forward and exactly what he went over in class. His expectations for each type of question was clear, and he went over where all the marks were coming from. I found him a hard to approach with questions though, and he had a bit of a superiority complex.
Very passionate about teaching and always there for his students. Not an easy class but if you show up and study his examples then it makes it much easier. 3 quizzes, 2 midterms and a final (on whole course). Easy marker and if you try you will receive some marks. Would take again.
A real gem. I had friends taking stats106 with other profs and from what I heard, Fotouhi is the way to go. Stats can move fast and you really can not afford to fall behind. The prof did a great job cramming a lot of material into a condensed summer semester. If you ever need help, he is really accessible either after class or during office hours.
This could be an easy class if you have foresight to be three weeks ahead of the scheduled material as more than half of every test except the final had not been covered at that point.
Pros: Turns out I'm great at Stats, at least when this guy teaches. Very specific, logical way of teaching that clicks with me. Good examples, well covered. Knew exactly what material would be on tests, no surprises. Cons: He is somewhat stern, can seem unfriendly (but he isn't actually imo). Doesn't encourage discussion. Bit lecture heavy.
I found Ali to be very specific to the questions you'd be asked and very fair. He told us what to expect on the quizzes and exams and he was straight forward. NO tricks or hidden answers. Do formulas exactly the way he tells you and you'll do just fine. I didn't find his accent hard to understand & he took time to make sure that everyone understood
He is a very good prof would recommend
Great at explaining each topic in many ways to ensure students understanding, shows by formula then by calculator and students aren't made to memorize formulas. Accessible during office hours, notes posted on line at before classes. Would recommend Ali and am taking the next level of his course next semester.
Great prof.
Ali is a great prof to take stats with; he is extremely organized in his classes and lays out the material and class in a logical way. Make sure to get a TI-83 or TI-84 calculator His midterms and finals are tough but fair, its not true that he tests on stuff he didn't cover. My advice is to not let the midterm catch you off guard - study lots!
Keep in mind - the course was hard in general - but we went through a lot of material and just the way he decided to present the material - in my opinion - wasn't optimal. He likes to go over theory too much - get into the problems man! Idk. I'd avoid him unless theres no better option for stats in ufv.
In the beginning he seems very hard. He is confusing at first but you will get the hang of it. He's not really approachable, I find him very awkward to talk to but he is a good professor. I would take his class again.
After having attempted Stats 104 once before, I was expecting to struggle through this class. Ali is very organized and does an exceptional job of explaining the content in a way that makes sense. I went to all the classes, listened to his lectures and did the homework and to my surprise walked away with an A! He is a great teacher.
Mediocre professor. If you're having trouble in class he's about as compassionate as a doorknob. He seems like an okay person but his teaching is pretty awful. If YouTube didn't exist I bet his class' mean fail rate would go up 300% with a 99% confidence level.
Great Prof, had him for 104 and 106. Uses every minute of class time effective and wants to make sure you understand each learning outcome. PRINT OFF THE ONLINE NOTES AND BRING TO CLASS, this way you can focus on the lecture and make side notes and necessary. He explains how to do everything by formula, calc and minitab so you have many options!
I was a bit apprehensive to take stats 106 with him because of the reviews on here, but he is actually an amazing prof. Explains the concepts so thoroughly and tries his hardest to make stats as easy as possible. Quizzes, midterm and final are quite easy in my opinion as long as you study hard.
Hard to understand. Very complex problems rushed through quickly. Does not like interruptions. Actually said "I expect a high rate of failure in this class" when someone got up to leave 5 mins early.
i can't believe he is a teacher. is not approachable. does not want his students to succeed. brags how for 13 years his class averages have been 68%. that says more about him than his students. will not answer questions. if you do, be prepared to be belittled. doesn't like to explain anything more than once. goes through material way too fast.
Very hard to do well in his class! The lectures are so boring and he rushes through everything. Will never take his class again
if you have the option to take it with another teacher you definitely should, he is unapproachable and very few office hours. not a good teacher do yourself a favor and don't take his class
I have never been good at math, but this professor made it possible for me to get a good grade. He explains everything thoroughly, you just have to pay attention in class. Do the homework and you should do well. Would not want to take this class again, but would take a class with this prof again.
Lots of material to cover, in a hard subject. I think many of the bad reviews falsely represent Ali, but rather symbolize the toughness of this course in general, regardless the prof. Ali has plenty of office hours. I benefited greatly by printing the class notes out prior to class.
Unapproachable and a hard maker. Usually an A student as well.
if you have a question, if you have a doubt get ready to be belittled. you are supposed to know things about the course that you are taking for first time that he's been teaching for million years. if he teaches you tom and jerry his tests are game of thrones.
Ali is not a very good teacher. He is very passionate about the stats subject. But if you come to him and ask for help, he will not help you. He will often say go to the stats lab. I found him very harm to understand as well.
Dont take his class. Not helpful at all. If you can find another professor please chose them over him for stats 104.
I was nervous to take stats, but Ali made it really easy. He posted all the notes for each chapter at the beginning of the semester so the entire class knew what to expect. He usually gave 10 or more examples for each chapter which was super helpful for studying and was really fair with his quizzes and tests. Overall he is a great stats prof!
It's very clear what Ali expects out of you in his course. He goes through practice problems in his lecture clearly and the content on the quizzes/exams is very similar to what is done in class.
He is the worst thing ever happened to me.
He is very strict professor. His marking is so much hard. No one willingly takes his course unless it is mandatory and don't have another choice.
Honestly stats are terrible so finding a good prof is hard. At first I thought this guy was going to make this course the worst thing I had ever experienced in my life. By the second month he had actually gotten to be really helpful and understanding. He can be difficult about questions being asked but if you're clear he can and will help you.
Stats is a difficult course that can be confusing and frustrating without proper guidance. Professor Fotouhi teaches every lesson with many helpful examples. Make sure you go to his classes and take notes and solve the practice problems, guaranteed a good mark
Considering this subject is difficult I think Ali did a fair job explaining it. I took his online class which consisted of him taking the class through the chapter notes and showing us examples using formulas and Minitab. I didn't read the textbook, I just did the online assignments and used his notes. Exams were a bit difficult.
He is absolutely the least understanding professor at UFV. He is definitely not suited to be a professor under online conditions. The amount of strictness he has over every little thing is hilarious. For a first year student at University and taking a harder course which shouldn't be an online course, this professor does not make your life easier.
This was my first stats class, and Ali is a pretty good teacher. Lectures are a bit boring, but mainly due to the topic. His tests are easy and clear. There's lots of homework assignments. He's also accessible outside class. You need to attend class though, he explains everything in class and shows you how to use Minitab. Overall, good prof.
Not flexible, even online. Asked if he could record lectures because of work hours. Said he couldn't and wouldn't even though I know Profs can, and they did for last semester through blackboard. Also said he won't offer 1 to 1 classes aka office hours. He suggested I drop the course and take a different one, but no other upper level math options!
Unless you have a strong grasp on stats before hand, don't take. Ali doesn't give any practice work or material to help your understanding. He gives you the bare minimum of the chapters in his lectures. For every section expect 30 to 40 pages of reading. It's impossible to keep up if you have 4 classes.
I asked him to narrow things down in the text; for practice specifically. Each chapter has practical, theoretical and a self test with over a 100 question per chapter. Many are doable but they get out of hand quickly. DO NOT DO THE THEORETICAL OR THE PRACTICAL. DO THE SELF TEST ONLY. There's way too many questions that are organized badly.
He's solid. Provides lots of help during and after class.
Not my cup of tea. The tests and quizzes were nothing like the homework, I put hours of studying into this class and my test grades just did not show that.
He was a decent professor. I found his wording very confusing as English is not his first language. When I asked for clarification he made things more confusing. He was not a generous marker and the lectures were incredibly dry. He did not want any community in the class by turning chat off so we were not able to talk to each other online.
Ali Fotouhi is not a good professor for statistics. His course is based on three exams and online homework. He does not give enough time for exams and will not negotiate for more time. Take statistics with another professor!!!!
Lectures were just doing example after example, boring but helpful if you manage to pay attention. Very tough grader, doesn't give much partial credit on questions; you have to put down a perfect solution or you'll get zero.
Seriously impossible to pass his class. Was doing well on all the assignments then he expected us to complete our midterm in 50 minutes, which is not enough time. Couldnt even finish half of it. Didnt care when people complained. Talked to other people whove taken his course and it was the same for them.
Ali has 0 compassion for his students. Strict time limits for the midterms and exams. Takes no criticism from students. Boring. Dry. No sense of humour. Difficult marker for no reason. Has an accent, so he's difficult to understand sometimes. Class average was in the 60's. Do not take his class if you can help it, especially at higher courses.
Worst professor Ive ever had. He has no compassion for his students. He is a very hard marker. If you dont write things exactly how he does it he will mark it wrong even if its correct. Strict with online exam time. If you submit it 1 min late he gives you zero. Doesnt allow u to communicate with him during exam if technical errors occur.
I dont understand all the bad reviews, his expectations are laid out so clearly. He also goes at a really good pace to ensure everybody is picking up the material. Stats is not the easiest class but as a teacher, Ali was great. He made the material easy to understand.
If you need either stat 106 or 104 take 104 the difference in difficulty is crazy. Overall good prof minor language barrier issues when it comes to teaching. Keep a notebook of all the Minitab procedures he shows you because it's stupidly hard to find these online. Attendance sucks but is important. Youtube is your friend when it comes to studying
Ali is the worst prof I have ever had. Lazy. Does not give any feedback until the first midterm (assignments are all online), and even then, no comments on work. Class average was obviously very low after 2 MTs, but he just told us how easy the tests were. I advise you to take someone else (or waiting) even if it means adding time to your degree.
whatever you do, don't take him, you will hate yourself. No feedback was ever provided. Not accessible. Very rude and confrontational. Gets mad if you ask questions. Over half the class failed the first midterm, all he said was you need to study more. Uses outdated tech that other profs don't and you have to figure out how to use it on your own.
He has sufficient knowledge but doesn't know how to teach properly. He speaks non-stop about the material without giving students much time to think. Teaches in a rush. His accent is also a bit different as he is Arabic.
The other review was right if you use the right process and get the right answer, but mess up the final notation, its marked as 0/10. I know stats is hard but sending announcements on blackboard to encourage students to drop out if they get a bad grade, really? Like other reviews on here, how about working with struggling students, why attack them?
Lecture heavy, he is super boring, and doesn't really prepare you for harder questions on the assignments. The final is worth 55%.
The prof and class can be easy if you pay close attention. Attendance is not mandatory but YOU WANT to attend the lectures, trust me otherwise everything is just plain hard. The only thing that will prob throw you off is the final exam percentage, 55%. A pretty generous marker as long as you do it step by step
He has a good knowledge of the topic. Very patient in answering the questions. Respect students.
Professor respects all students and available to answer questions in class and out of class. His tests are fair. You need to attend to his lecture if you want to pass the course.
This teacher is on time to all classes and is very patient in explaining the material. He is excellent in making comments about the progress on exam papers. He gives a lot of examples in class and gives good number of assignments. I recommend to take the course with him if you want to learn and be able to use probability and statistics in future.
He is decent professor who cares about students. He in knowledgeable. He does not allow students to chat during the class time. His exams are fair and he goes over the solution of exams and provide good feedbacks. He provided the class notes before the lecture which is helpful. He uses open source textbook which saves a lot of money for student.
If you are weak in calculus this course, math 270, will be challenging for you. Ali provides many examples from different areas and solve them in class. He use Minitab software which makes calculations easy. The only problem is that the probability and statistics course is dry but it is the nature of the course.
Fantastic professor. Really cares about his students. He wants you to succeed. He puts in a lot of effort into his lectures. Easy to understand. Likes when students ask questions.
If you don't want to fail do not take him
Professor Ali's MATH270 class can be challenging, but engaging with the material and using helpful study tools like Unstuck ai can make a big difference. The lectures are informative, and he wants students to succeed. Overall, a solid class if you put in the work.
Ali is a great professor. It is not an easy class, but he gives you all the tools you need. He supplies notes before the class on blackboard. You should print/write out the notes before class and fill in the examples and extra information in the class. Do the homework as you learn the chapters and use the library computers to practice minitab.
Ali is a good teacher, the hybrid schedule worked well for the given class, tests were worth 15% each, but he went over each one after the fact, and was very generous in marking.
Had him Summer 2024. My program is CIS and was scared of this class because I knew nothing about STAT; however, the prof. was humble, approachable and explained the material very clearly. His quizzes and final and based on what was taught in class and are not difficult at all if you paid attention.
I took this professor for my fall 2024 semester. His lectures were easy to follow along with, the tests were reasonable and he gave clear expectations, and he is a very kind but straight forward person. I highly recommend taking this course with him if you like a well structured class.
Ali was a great professor and the only reason I was able to pass such a hard course. Explains things very clearly and makes his expectations very clear. I would recommend taking him for stat 106 if you want simple explanations of the content and for midterms and finals to look very similar to the notes. Thank you Ali
He is one of the best stat teachers at UFV. I highly recommend taking him because the practice question he gives on his powerpoints is very similar to the ones on the tests and exams. There are no trick questions, pay attention and practice the homework questions, and you will be fine. He is very clear on what the exams are going to be like.
He is clear and concise on what you need to know and practice for the tests. Honestly, he deserves a higher rating on this website because he makes learning statistics easy compared to other professors. There are no surprises in this class, just do the homework practice for each chapter and you'll get a good grade
Tests weren't hard if you did the assignments, but grading is based on very few things: three midterms worth 15% each and a final worth 55%. The cumulative final was much harder than the midterms. I had an A+ all term and dropped to a B- from the exam alone. I mostly taught myself since his explanations weren't clear. Don't take him if you can.
Do not take this class if you're taking a lot of other classes. You have to learn a lot on your own and your mark at the end is only from 3 midterms worth 15% and a final worth 55%. While he's a generous marker on the midterms, the final was nothing like the midterms and was very difficult. Think twice before taking this class.
