You do not learn anything out of his class, and he is very lazy. He cannot teach at all.
If you like reading the book, you'll pass the class.
Lectures and midterm are straight from the book. Final exam is almost the same as sample exam from web. Will need 173A book (p. 346) to do Case Study. Bring pillow.
read book and got a B.
One of the worst professors I've EVER had. DO NOT take him. He can't teach worth crap...his lectures are recaps from the book. His exams are only 5 questions but they are each worth 20 points and essays. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE MAN!
The class sucks! Cannot teach or he just doesn't want to be there..either way...it is just awful! We correct him since he doesn't know basic financial theory. How did he get hired in the department? Let me teach instead. :)
He is the worst professor ever. He don't know how to teach & the student have to correct him!! DON'T take this professor..Exam are similar to the HW and hard to understand the HW. 50% on Final exam, So Crazy!?!?
Class is not hard. U do a project the whole semester. Get a good group. Not too much work. Our group would do the work the day before. We slacked and passed. :-)
Easy class. Read the book if you want to pass. I took 2 classes with him and I got reasonable grades.
Class is easy because he is lazy. Take him if you do not mind not learning much about Finance.
not good
this professor is definitely a waste of taxpayers' money. u learn nothing out of his class. lazy and does not want to teach. get this guy oiut of the university please...do everyone a favor.
So i took 172a, and i feel kind of dumber since the semester has been over. I dont think i learned much or anything at all except that he doesnt really teach. Its amazing how he can take up the whole class time teaching zippo. Oh yea, the book by zaima is the worst finance book of all the land..
Horrible teacher! Doesn't want to help. Have to present a lot or else will give a bad grade, even though got good grades on the reports. Unfair, can't teach, and overall just unapproachable. Get ANY other teacher, you will be thankful (and will actually learn something!!)
He is very knowledgeable. He expects students to study hard and do the homeworks. I learned a great deal in this class. His grading is very fair and clear. He cares about the students.
Great teacher, keeps your interests.
he's a good teacher. cares about his student. do the hw, cause most of the test questions comes from the hw.
I started to hate finance after this class. He does not teach well, does not bring professional experience to class, too much into the statistics part of Finance. All other professors for this class had more interesting program than his. Don't try...
Go to class, listen to the lectures, and do not be afraid to ask questions. Reza will teach whats important, and then expand on financial theory. Exams are based on HW from book, so study it till your eyes bleed...
For Finance is not bad at all. He does not teach you unnecessary things. Make it easier for you to concentrate. Helpful and does not rush to teach. Recommended
This is a great teacher for 170, I'm a marketing Major, so my interest was not to high for the class..Just stay on top of the homework and quizes and you'll be ok
Reza makes it clear from the start that if you have questions, ask! He doesn't collect the homework but exam questions are VERY similar. Grade is based on quizzes, 1 mid-term and 1 final. I recommend him but you have to be willing to put in the time.
He will go over the important parts of the course and will spend more time as needed on it, so that we can understand it. He is very approachable in office hours. He is a funny guy also. This class had no HW, but a lot of quizzes. Be sure to keep up with the material. There was a M/C midterm and a final that wasn't comprehensive.
Great teacher: humorous, understands his students, and always take time to answer questions .. even if he doesn't have the answer now, he'd follow-up in upcoming classes. He truly cares about his students and definitely knows what he's talking about .. very intelligent and respectable professor. Highly recommend Dr. Reza!
Gives you the numbers to the test problems that are to be included in tests. Humorous, knowledgeable, and helpful.
Be sure to do well on the quizzes and tests. You'll be fine. Also remember to do the homework he assigns, it'll be helpful.
Excellent professor, very humorous-knows the material. Quizzes & Exam very easy. Helps you out when you have problems, will work with you. Easy "A" class.
One of the most unclear and unhelpful professors. Despite it being somewhat easy, I wouldn't recommend him.
Vague about assignments. Tries to cover way too much in class. Experienced one of the most boring classes of my life when I had to listen to a lecture on CD for an hour.
Couldn't really handle his teaching style... Multiple choice tests but I don't think I'm really learning too mcuh.. For those of you looking to take 173a when he teaches it... I would highly recommend Campsey

EXTREMELY UNCLEAR, vague about assignments, stingy with help, unorganized lecture style, uses abstract non-finance analogies when he could just as easily give us real world examples, does not "tie it all together" well so students get a comprehensive learning experience, depends too heavily on our remembering every little detail from former classes
Be warned, you'll have to learn on your own. He is vague. Email communication not recommended, this professor is extremely condescening and rude at times. See him during office hours, he'll be more helpful, but know your material before seeing him. I'm not your sit at home all day and study because I have a life and work. so love your book all..
This class is setup so that learning takes place on your own. There are cases every week that you have to write an analysis on. Make sure you do your Business plan project well because he grades hard on it and it will determine your grade in the class. Be sure to ask questions in class and show up to class because he deducts points if your not.
Horrible professor. Expects you to know everything before he "teaches" it, but reality is he doesn't teach anything. I went to every lecture and studied for his tests but he still failed me. Awful teacher, but if you're a finance major u'll have no choice.
He is horrible at teaching. does curve, but you learn jack****. I feel really bad for those taking 173a with him. he shouldn't be teachin that class.take it with campsey and you will learn more.reza is not good at teaching the material.I feel like SJSU is going to loose some competive edge in the workforce cuz he cant able to teach 173 like campse
I don't get all these bad gradings..... In my opinion, he is a good professor who goes over the material, and of course, the student needs to do his part as well in order to succeed in any class. Read the text, do the hm and complete the assignment. I don't get where he is so terrible.... Someone could please explain????
He change assignment dates or what to cover for tests and not tell us student unless we asked. Lectures are unorganized. Teacher never answers quizzes questions (not graded). Useless examples that does not relate to the business world. Rude and condescending at most time. This class require you to study on yor own.
Not as bad as people say. The class is basically your luck in getting a good group. Midterm 1 is based on notes then he throws a curve ball by making midterm 2 from reading. It's all luck.
U'll learn a lot, but u have 2 read, study on ur own. Tests r extremely diff. Textbook and lectures would help but questions r hard. I study my as** off to get a C+. People who have "A" have prior tests from last semesters. Good group would help too. Nice prof. go to his office 4 help especially 4 project. Good luck taking him.
His style requires students to ask for clarity, otherwise, you are on your own. I read the text, do the HW and attend every class and yet lose out to those tricky exam questions. Need to get hold of those past questions if you want to score!
Class is tough but what do you expect? It's finance. Prof. Reza basically teaches out of the book during class but I found the book more helpful in most chapters. Overall, just study the material and you should be fine.
Reading the text-book is very helpful. Going to his class is just wasting time, but sometimes he tests his lecture, so it is tough. Getting an A is doable. Exams are based on the problems in the end of each chapter. Do all, not only the selected ones he assigns because some of them will be in the midterms.
This is a horrible class. Professor is no help. 3 tests and one stock project. If you dont do good on the tests, you are screwed. cheat sheet doesnt help on the exams, very tricky questions. his lectures are not very helpful
Even though I received a B in the class. I don't think this teacher is worth taking. Exams were difficult and the prof is not clear. Class is a waste of time and is super boring. Read the book and do the hw even though it is not collected. That's the only way you can pass if you end up taking this prof.
Not an easy class. Dr. Reza is extremely vague. The exam is all over the place. People spend hours doing the homework and studying just to get a "C". Do well on the project or you won't pass.
There were 2 mt and a final. Going to class was a waste of time. He is unclear. Class material is very difficult. I had to retake the class. I retook this class w/ Campsey OVER the SUMMER and passed! Take Campsey instead. You have to really study in Campsey, but chances of passing will be higher.
The material is very comprehensive, so the class is hard. This professor is EXTREMELY helpful if you only ask. The exams test basic understanding, there's absolutely nothing tricky about them. But you need to know the material to do well.
the class is hard and the exam is extremely tricky and confusing.i will not recommend this prof.to anyone, unless u have no choice. remember don't take him if you want to pass the class.
My experience with Reza is very positive. Of course, I did my part by reading the text b/f class and doing my homework. I can't enfasize how important it is do this b/c the class is hard. I wentseveral times to his office and helped a LOT w/prjct and let me borrow his textbook that he sugge(Zaima's book sucks!) for the whole semester.Got A-on proj
Do not take Reza unless you have to. He does not know how to teach, tests are hard.
yes,i agree with the previous rating, don't take him if you can wait until summer or some other professors. hard exams and projects, vague, absolutely not recommended.
He teaches to a style that you'd find at UC Berzerkeley. Very difficult because he asked questions from out of left field. That being said he is very approachable with questions. Just don't ask the basic stuff you neglected to read.
He throws curve balls so watch out. I personally thought he taught 172A better. Always shoot for a grade above the curve. Read the book, do the homework, and understand everything. He doesn't really care about his students, meaning he won't hesitate to fail you. This is not an easy class. My first "C" before graduating was from him.
Lecture covers more than book. 2 midterms, 1 final and 2 projects (1 big 1 lab). Tests cover book and lecture with healthy review before each. Previous year's tests posted on his website for review, re-uses many questions. Good in-class interaction and is always available for office hours (or by arrangement).
this guy is sometimes out of his mind, he gave so many questions so students don't have enough time to finish them. class is 2+ hrs, but he only gave 1;15 mins on the test with many questions. i believe not many students have enough time to carefully read or understand the questions, just bubble and turn it in on time or he will leave w/o your test
make sure u not take this guy, not recommended. AVOID HIM.
This teacher is horrible. His test questions require a deep understanding of the concepts, and he doesn't help you understand the concepts at all. You pretty much have to read the book on your own, and teach yourself. He's the only one teaching 171A, so you're pretty much stuck with him.
yes, AVOID HIM.
Not meaning to be rude but....the lectures are useless! Just read the book! And he hardly use the book! The book is better than him !!
This is the worst finance teacher i've ever had. he hes strict, doesn't make any reasonable exceptions, and appears to be in a bad mood often. lectures/book reading is pointless to prepare for the exams. The only way to pass them is studying old exams and memorizing questions/answers. overall, not a very effective teacher =/
He will fail anybody, and he does not care for one bit. Don't expect him to do anything for you. The lecture is not helpful at all.
He's a mediocre teacher. Study lecture notes and old exams from his website. I think he really wants students to succeed but is put off by what he perceives as laziness.Don't wait til the last minute to study,he won't answer questions 72hrs b4 exams/project due dates. Tests are tough, but big curve. Final is easy-study midterms/web exams.
I agree, get the remove Reza movement started, terrible teacher.
This guy's crazy. He exams are confusing and it seems like students stump him w/ their questions on a regular basis. The worst thing is he is the only professor teaching this subject so we as students are stuck. I agree with the others in saying give this guy the boot. He said he preferred teaching in Europe, anyway. Move on, Reza.
Get this bum out of here. SJSU can't be serious with this guy as the only teacher.BS tests from a BS teacher. Yeah, I said it.
If you're a Finance or Corporate Finance major you're screwed. Useless lecture so if you don't read you're dead. It's a shame Harjoto isn't coming back.
Bad Teacher. Does not care about the students. He just say what ever and do what ever, does not care if the students learn any thing or not. He thinks it is ok for students to fail if they do not learn. Yet he does not teach clearly. Doesnt seem to have too good knowledge on Finance. Makes lots of mistakes on making exams. Dont take him!!!!
This guy is horrible and I do not understand how he can be the only teacher for the 171A class. It is as if the department wants to funnel all the students through this jerk who is always in a bad mood and does not want to make sure that students grasp the concepts.
All Finance classes are difficult and this is not an exception. His exams ( all multiple choice) are a bit confusing, but his lectures are interesting. I enojoyed this class way better than M. Pagani's and a many people did really good on exams. If you study, you will do good. He is helpful too if you see him after class or during office hours.
Best finance professor. Do not know why others rate him low. much better than harjoto.
horrible professor, doesnt know how to teach and doesnt care for the students, he doesnt make sense and his exams dont reference anything. USELESS...
The class is not boring at all. Personally I've learned a lot from him.... Tests are confusing, but not too bad if you study ( all mult. choice). I would choose him over most finance professors at SJSU.
I enjoyed this class. Exams are difficult, but lectures were good. Reza has improved tremendously as a teacher. Study the example tests on his website, read the book and go to class. Get a study group for exams.
Go to class because his lectures make the textbook material a lot easier. Get a good study group going and study the sample tests he gives out. Do all this and you should be fine. And don't ask stupid questions or he'll rip you to pieces.
He will teach you more than you will learn in any other class. His exams are very challenging, but if you put the time in to really understand the material, the exam score will reflect the level of your efforts. It is extremely helpful to go visit him during office hours, as he can help you to see the big picture of Finance.
I thought he was a good proff. Not the best, but i liked the structure of his class and his exams are pretty straight forward. read the chapters and work the problems at the end.... honestly anyone who says he was to hard must not have put the time in.. just read the chapters and work problems.. cake
60% first two midterms, 40% final. Approx. 30 questions per exam, so each is worth 1-2% of your grade. Reza's lectures are not engaging. Just study the book RELIGIOUSLY and do all homework problems. His exams are tricky and test your in-depth knowledge of the material, not just memorization.
This guy is the most useless professor. He treats students like crap, and makes numerous errors grading a MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAM! I took his class and did well on the first midterm, not so good on the second and did well on the final and I got a C. He doesn't know what he is talking about. Keeps asking the class if he is correct. Take someone else!!
He's actually not a bad teacher. He really tries to make sure everyone understands the material before he moves on. He'll even go as far as to waste class time to answer questions. There were 2 tests and a final, which were all pretty hard, but he curves. There were no surprises, so if you read the book and study his notes, you should do well.
A great professor, with great knowledge of finance. I would not say the class is easy but its not hard either. He will help you in his office hours like anything, will be clear on whats going to be in the exams, curves and tries to help. However, reading the book is must as most of the test depends on the reading. Recommended.
Prof Reza is most knowledgeable and teaches finance with passion. No flashy publisher PPTs. His lecture notes are piece of cake that helps you understand what is written in the textbook. He uploads them on the Blackboard. Understanding the subject matter is very important; not memorization.
If you want to learn some thing important about finance, please take him. He has a Versatile knowledge with practical experience which most profs lack in SJSU. He uses the last 20-30 minutes to tutor those who have any questions. Exams are not hard if you understand the concept. Understand his lectures, read his notes, and the text book, sweet A.
This professor is the most boring and worst professor I have out of all my classes right now. The rest of my finance professors are interesting. The way they teach the material makes you actually stay focused and keeps you in tune. This guy is horrible. Take someone else if you can. He looks lost most of the time or is always correcting himself.
I definitely would not recommend this instructor. He teaches something else, and the tests are different than what he teaches. His midterms and finals were difficult. I really don't like his teaching style.
I enjoy studying in his class. He's always open for discussions. I like the atmosphere- very open and friendly. Tests are not hard. You can get an A easily if you spend a little time on the assigned HW and scan through the book. Study whatever he teaches in class. That's enough for an A.
unclear most of the time, tests are difficult. He claims thathis test are like the HW, but they're not even close to the HW.
He is a very good professor who loves to deliver his knowledge and experience to students. His exams are very hard but all are from his lectures. Just pay attention to his lectures and take note carefully. Do not need the book but the book is very helpful if you want to learn some definitions. Recommend to take him.
This teacher is not easy, however he is more than willing to help you if you need it. He teaching style is more of a discussion, where students should come knowing the material. His exams are hard, but he curves based on an average of a C. Lastly, he used exam one questions on exam 2, and final.
Hard to understand what's not to like about Reza. The project is way easier compared to Pagani. I just attended most of the classes and read the chapters, then i passed. Didn't even look at the homework problems. If you are just looking for a class to regurgitate info on tests then this is not for you.
Don't take this professor. His class is pretty boring and he doesn't have anything to teach. You basically don't learn anything new in this class.
if you want to learn something about the course, then dont take him. he was the most boring pro. i have ever seen in sjsu. he did not teach at all, he only taught 15mins for 3 hrs class time and the rest of time was asking student to share whatever they want.class is easy but it's useless.so disappointed
Took him for 173A. The "sample" exams are going to help you A LOT he literally will take the same questions and put it on there. But then the final was really hard just try hard on the midterms take advantage of extra credit and you should pas. He doesn't like to answer questions though kinda just rambles on.
No helpful, the exams are not from the lecture, you have to study youself. He just doesn't seem to care.
2 one page group reports, 2 midterms, and 1 final. ALL exams are cumulative. You will find questions from E1 in E2 & so on. Exams are based on chapter problems he assigns (he provides the answers to them). He curves. Writes lectures on the board. Explains things fairly well. He is a little mean/rude, sarcastic, and will ignore you.
Horrible ... He should teach in middle schools , not a good professor for a university course . His class is relax , lectures the entire time , leaves note on the board , but notes aren't helpful at all for the exams. I am very disappointed , he's rude.
Worst educational experience of my college career. Instead of teaching students, he confuses them. He belittles students who ask questions and does not provide adequate support or feedback. He does not use CANVAS. Students walk out during his lectures. He also is no longer teaching the course after Spring 2015 by his admission.
I attended every lecture and paid very close attention. Professor was very good at explaining the material. I never opened my book or studied for the midterms. Only exam i studied for was the final where you are permitted to a cheatsheet flashcard. Hint: if he repeats himself saying something or emphasizing it, it will be on the exam
