Quite quirky she really is wonderful if you are open minded and love history
I did not learn one thing from her class! You cannot understand her!
very unorganized...don't look to learn anything, lectures are jumbled
Gets lost in lectures. Don't expect to learn anything. Sometimes gets hostile.
Demanding course but very interesting. Offered many insightful information in addition to the text. Extremely helpful when students come to her with problems.
A great prof. UNLESS you think that you know everything and that history is nothing but leaders and wars, the you will hate her & make other students hate you for being so shallow. She tries very hard to teach her students to THINK, not just recite facts.
People are morons if they think she's a good teacher. She doesn't teach, she babbles and annoys.
Well, if I am a moron for thinking she is a good teacher then so be it because she is! If you don't want to learn, don't take her. She inspired me to change my major and has been an inspiration to me. But then apparently I am a moron, despite my 3.7 GPA!
She is an amazing teacher. Teaches in unorthodox ways and makes the classes interesting. You will learn in her class.
I've taken Dr. Carls for History 3 years in a row and, though she is challenging, she is a great teacher. If you keep up with assignments and don't procrastinate, then you will do well. She'll help if you don't understand, just don't be afraid to ask.
Her teaching style is unorthadox, confussing, and inconsistant. Yet she is VERY egar to help you. I just need her to graduate (301 and 499). If you ask, you'll eventually understand, but her style just isn't for me.
incoherent, babbles, rambles aimlessly, unclear on assignments, unable to answer questions in a direct manner, concerned about students but unable to relate her points, too abstract to accomplish anything, avoid her class but get to know her
She is very interesting and nice.
Dr. Carls is a very nice woman, yet she is one of the worst professors I have ever encountered in my life. I couldn't understand anything she was saying. At times she rambles aimlessly. Her lectures are all over the place which makes it hard to take notes
I have taken her several times and she has gotten progressively worse. I used to like her but she get more and more insane in her expectations as time goes by. IF you already know all the history of what you are studying, then you will be fine.
She is very impersonal. Her lectures are very hard to follow. She gets annoyed very easily.
She is very nice. If I needed help, she seemed happy to give it. If you show that you are interested in the class, you will do much better with her, but you should be interested in all classes.
She is very helpful and makes history come alive. Her knowledge of European history is amazing. She helps you learn the proper use of the library.
umm...well...if you want to go to graduate school, she is very good. other than that, she doesn't really get the students, and they don't get her, but on a personal level she is a very sweet woman, and very nice.
She is too smart for slackers. If you want to learn, she's your woman--if not, try someone else. She expects you to do your best.
DO NOT TAKE HER....she blabs and it cant be understood....not good at all
Her teaching style is horrible, the book she chose doesn't follow with what she is teaching, she couldn't answer my questions, she rambles incoherently, expects you to look on the internet for test info b/c it's not in her notes or in the book, she's nice personally but a horrid teacher.
I am expecting a good grade in her class, but I would NEVER NEVER EVER take her again. She is very rude and overbearing. Her expectations are ridiculous for a 100-level class.

As long as you take notes, listen in class, and do your homework, you'll be fine. Sure, her assignments are a little strange, but they help you to learn the material you need for the test.
I'm sure that Dr. Carls is a great teacher for fellow French Doctorates of History. However, for your everyday American, she is hard to follow and unclear. I used to love history, my father is a history teacher in fact. However now I have gained a new perspective and changed my major.
Easy if you pay attention and are willing to put a little effort in the class. She really prepares you for what's expected of college students.
She's very nice and if you put effort in, she will work with you. Her expectations are high and often she becomes confused and scattered during lectures--she's easily distracted. I like her, but would not recommend her.
She is scattered and goofy. Not the best teacher, but she is quite knowledgeable...if you can manage to get the information out of her. Be wary.
Dr. Carls is a great professor. She is very open to helping her students. Must listen past her accent. Quizzes are easy as long as you do the study guide. Pay attention to the essay question on the mid-term and final and you should pass easy. She will go over how to do her essay during a class.
Very hard to understand. She is very random in her lectures. Would try to avoid her as much as possible.
She is so sweet. I love her. She is helpful and easy. The accent is nothing to worry about. She is very nice...and quirky.
I do not think that Dr. Carls was a good professor she was very unclear in her assignments and I was very helpful when it came to giving students a better explaination. I didn't like the fact that the changed things at the end of the sememster it was very difficult to adjust to the changes
I had this woman for two classes and she is unbelieveable. Her class is boring and she is not helpful or clear about anything. In History 301, we had to do a paper the only grade in the class and she was VERY UNCLEAR about what she wanted...Had to change my subject atleast five times just to make her happy. Her grade for teachhing should be an F!!!!
very difficult to understand because of her strong accent. has trouble holding the students attention during lectures. Avoid Dr. Carls if at all possible

i love history but this is too condensed. the quirky, all-over-the-place lectures @ 8 am do nothing for me except heighten my desire to get out of that classroom. all essay question & identification ties me in knots simply because she is not clear sometimes on what she wants from the writing.
Dr.Carls is a very sweet lady. She is helpful when it comes to the material. If you need help don't be afraid to go to her. That is what she is there for.If you are serious about history take Dr.Carls, because you will learn alot.
She is very unorganized. She wanted us to write a research paper and she changed it up about 10 times in a 3 week period. She is easy on homework, but never tells you about due dates but just asks for work on random days. I WOULD NOT TAKE HER FOR HISTORY 301..maybe 121 or 122 but COFFEY OR McDononough should teach this course.
I would not recommend taking this professor for an upper-division class. She has ridiculous rules, gives long pointless assignments, and is very eccentric.
Worst. Class. Ever.
I would not recommend this instructor at all. She is a bit out there. I will just say that students in her class could not chew gum or wear a hat b/c she thought that was rude and would call you out on it in the middle of her lecture. I think that is a bit middle school. She doesn't really show respect to her students.
Oh my gosh her wierd ass acient is impossible to tolerate. I mean i just want to kill myself! However she is very easy at least for the summer classes! Take home exams! Im telling you if you can tune her out yuo will be just fine!
all her test are essay but you dont have to take ANY notes...just show up to class and do the study guide and study it and you will make at A
I took her for like early history... she is horrible.. no gum.. no hats.. she will interrupt her lesson to make sure.. lol chew on your tongue and say i have no gum.. that is great. easy A if you study your study guide.. just dont ever listen to her. she made up a story about how women created fire .. she thot it was funny. it wasnt. has bad accent
Dr. Carls isn't that bad. Go to class and listen to her. Read the books, this is important. Take notes and do your best on the paper. The portfolio is a breeze. If you try you will do well. She is lenient on assignment due dates too. Seriously, if you do the work, you will do well. If you just show up and screw around, then you get what you get.
Very enthusiastic about her history. Lectures are NOT boring. She does have an accent, but so do we! Listen and take notes. She gives a study guide and choice of essay questions before the tests, you have to write the whole test out in a blue book. It was hard for me, but I made an A. The reading was very bundlesome and impossible to keep with.
She is one of those teachers who scares her students but doesnt mean to. She is just so educated and smart its hard for her to dumb herself down. She isnt easy by any means but she is very leniant with grading and gives many opportunitys to improve your grade. I think some people feel like she is trying to mock them but she really isnt.
The best professor at UTM.
Dr Carls is a very understanding professor. Incredibly intelligent, and is passionate about history and the world 2day. She cares about her students, and wants them to learn. Note: she likes the front row students the best, so find a seat up close. Read the text. She gives a study guide for the tests (essays). Study and you will do fine.
She knows her stuff and it's obvious that she likes history. She's kind of random and long winded. Overall her class is pretty easy. I took her in the summer and only had two tests and a final and she gave a very detailed study guide for all three. Listen and class and use the study guide and you should be fine.
Her tests are not the easiest in the world, but she is a good teacher to have. I have learned many things in her class and many of the things I learned in high school have been used in her class. If you can have her, I would most def. get her as my professor.
She is french and intelligent. She has every single lecture planned out, and really knows her stuff. You can tell she loves history. HOWEVER, I am not sure what it is, but I cannot keep focus in her class, nor can anyone else I have observed. But she gives you a study guide before each test, and if you take the time to learn it, you will do well.
She is a great teacher. She reminds me of Joan of Arc from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. She is incredibly intelligent but she has that randomness to her that is very enduring.
She is a pretty nice teacher. She really knows history and makes it understandable. Her tests are writing intensive and can be tough if you don't study the study guides. Attending class really helps. She follows the general outline of the book but adds her own stuff. You have to read the text and study to do well.
She's all over the place. Her class was EXTREMELY boring. I don't think I learned one interesting thing the entire semester. Her tests were all essays.
Carls is different, but not bad. I liked her. And she's not hard.
Simultaneously the easiest and most interminably boring class I've ever had.
so..much..FUN!
she does everything online
I took this class on-line and she was great. Very clear expectations and assignments. She answered email quickly and offered help when needed. The tests are hard and you do have to read the material but I would take her class again
She is a great scholar, and perhaps a good online professor. She writes all the lectures on blackboard. In the classroom, such is not the case. Great scholars are not always great teachers. It's not that she's mean or anything. She's actually quite nice if you're respectful of her rules. She just doesn't connect with the majority of her students.
I took her online class and she was so nice. I love her and I hope I could take her class again...
She did everything online. I did not even have to read the book. She is easy but not interesting at all!
She was a horrible teacher. No gum or hats aloud and if you have gum she will point you out real quick and tell you to spit it out. I couldn't understand her. She was not easy at all. It was all online and I gained nothing from her. Do not take her she at sometime will embarass you in class. She is rude
She's not a meaan lady, I'm sure she is great, but avoid her class at all costs. She insists on teaching from th ebook , but she doesn't know how to use it. All her tests and quizes are done throught the book's publisher and the pull information that may have been mentioned in one sentence. I love history and I am not doing so great in this class.
Attending the class was pointless. you must read a chapter before each class and take an online quiz, which are eazy. The test are online but they are extremely hard. I would not take Carls again if i could keep from it.
Love her as a person, but as a professor... She requires you to read the chapter before class and take an online quiz (not hard). During class, she rambles, and you can't skip because attendance is mandatory. What she talks about and what the quizzes are over are NOT on the test. Those are KILLER. The info on the test is small details in the book.
This is my second class with Carls. Write down everything. Sometimes tests come from seemingly insignificant details, but they are always online and they are very short and simple. Takes a few days to get past her accent. She is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable and passionate. Do the work, write the paper (Zotero!), go to class, and you'll do well.
Dr. Carls is an amazing teacher. She truly cares about her students and whether we pass or fail, she is incredibly kind. I would recommend her as a teacher. However, this is not an easy class, you are expected to know the chapter before coming to class and lectures can be rather long.
I took Alice Catherin Carls for History 122. She was amazing!!! Very help full. Any questions she is gladly to help. Be prepared to participate in discussion board. We usually covered 2 chapters a week but I like it finished before Spring Break.
Dr. Carls is the best professor I have ever had!! She goes above and beyond to help! Very interesting class.
Dr. Carls is easily one of the most compassionate professors on UTM's campus. Her courses can be difficult at times and she does move quickly, but she challenges you. She's a qualified educator and even better, she's a wonderful human being.
She is there to help her students anytime she can. You must attend because she will take attendance every class for a grade. She can sometimes be all over the place but she is a wealth of knowledge. She is very qualified and History majors really should take advantage of her knowledge and experience.
I had her online and in my opinion, she's a good teacher. She replied to all of my emails in a decent amount of time and answers my questions. For 121 she uses launchpad instead of canvas but it was easy to use. Her discussion questions really make you think but it helps get a better understanding of the material. Just do the work and do your best.
She is hard to understand, but a caring teacher. Her tests are online and barely cover what she talks about in class. Sometimes the test will ask questions about random chapters in book. She is very unorganized. If you are looking for a class with online test here you go but show up to class because attendance could cost you a letter grade.
I took the Hist 122 online part term class. It is a good bit of writing but it is not that bad. You have 3 quizes to do every week but they are easy come straight from the book. It was an A easing class HIGHLY recommend if you need an A just do the work.
This is the worst teacher Ive probably ever had. She is very opinionated, doesnt like to listen to others opinions, and super hard to understand because of the accent. Her tests are online so theyre easy but they dont cover much of the reading, which is required to know whats going on in class. I do not and will not ever recommend her.
Im a biology major and I took this course as a humanities credit. She claimed we could turn in extra credit to bump us up a letter grade, but didnt stick to her word. She takes the course too seriously and no one is a history major, just taking the course for credit because its required. I regret taking her class and wouldnt recommend her.
doesn't really teach, just assignments and reading from the textbook, gets mad when you don't know the answer and yells at you for not talking, take another class if you can.
Asked her a simple question through email and she responded with a very condescending attitude. Her work is somewhat easy since it is online but its a lot of reading.
She will make you come to her lectures to tell you about history that is sort of relevant to the chapters you are reading, but just irrelevant enough that you actually have to read the chapters yourself. Lots of quizzes and work through a website, quizzes are pretty easy though as its all online.
when the computer would stop working, she would hit the computer and the bang on the desk. it was funny to watch. she is slightly rude, but 1 on 1 she is nice and tries to help when something is going on in your life. she is very iffy.
