we need more professors like her.. shes very nice and very helpful and makes class fun.. but you have to come to class!
The greatest teacher of all time...she has this great British accent she picked up while going to school in England, so her lectures are fun to listen to. She's extremely passionate and you can tell she loves what she's talking about. GREAT, class. I highly recommend taking her class!!!!
Excellent professor! She definately knows what she is teaching about-which makes the class that much more enjoyable and understandable. I highly recommend taking her class! She was so understanding, too. Very funny humor. Loved her!
She does know her stuff, and teaches using powerpoint which can be very useful, but sometimes the lectures are a bit hard to follow, since she knows everything in Latin and Greek, and uses both in her lectures, which can make it a bit confusing. As for papers and exams, she is an extremely hard grader, you must know every point she is looking for.
Prof. Chapman is interesting, enthusiastic and fun. Knows a TON which can be intimidating, but uses powerpoint to teach mostly. If you want an easy class, don't take her, but if you want to learn, she's the prof. for it!
Dr. Chapman is one of the kindest and most helpful professors that I have had at GVSU. She is very understanding when you have difficulties with papers and she is willing to work with you in order to help you feel better about the assignment. She is very knowledgeable about history and she likes to share her enthusiasm with the class.
Best Professor I've ever had. She cares for individuals willing to put decent effort in. She wants each student to learn understand the material. She cares for each student almost as a mom, and develops a professor, student, relationship as the year passes, I know that I will be taking a class from her in the future if a history class is required
Dr. Chapman is the best prof I have ever had. Very passionate about her class. It makes learning fun. She makes lessons fun and entertaining. LOL. This was a great class and I actually learned alot!
Fabulous professor! Prof. Chapman is very passionate and knowledgeable about history. She is very dorky, but in a good way. Her exams are easy. Just fill in the blank, short answer, and sometimes an essay. She tells you the terms she wants you to know for the short answer and she really cares about how you do in the class.
Be weary of these "perfect" comments. Although she is very nice/dork/kind/helpfull the grading is not as relaxed. I maintained a B+ but with a lot of effort and sometimes frustrating grading styles on the essays. Overall, great lady but do not expect an easy A. Make sure essays are beyond perfect and very detailed. (marks down for minor things)
Not an easy class, but it's not a hard class either. She's a dork, but in a wonderful way. You shouldn't have a problem if you put a little effort in and write the papers and study from the study guides for each of her tests.
AMAZING teacher!
Dr. Chapman is by far the easiest clear teacher there is. If you do the terms for the test, go to class, and take notes. She basically hands you the test on a silver platter. Grades hard on papers but if you don't use "I" or "We" and can write, you are fine
Dr. Chapman is, by far, one of the greatest professors I've had yet! She always has a positive attitude and is excited about what she is teaching. So fun!
Good teacher, pretty funny as well. Tests are pretty hard but in class assignments and what not aren't bad at all. Papers are pretty easy too. She loves history- you can tell.
I LOVED Professor Chapman. She absolutely loves what she does and loves her students. She prepares you well for the tests which are not that hard to begin with. She grades a little harder on papers, but not too bad. She made this class more interesting than I ever thought it could be! Take her if you can!!
Has a great attitude and is funny, however she expects a lot of her students and her tests are very hard. Also she grades papers harshly as well. Unless you are really good at history I would take the class with a different prof if possible.
I LOVE prof. Chapman. I never had much interest in history but i always looked forward to going to her class. She is hilarious and makes the class very entertaining. Her tests do require some studying but overall it's totally worth it, she's very understanding!
If you don't know the material she assumes that you don't study and is degrading when you go talk to her in her office. Make sure you do a lot of studying.
Professor Chapman is extremely condescending. She is unclear with her paper expectations, and purposely withheld information and important concepts. As a 4.0 student, her class was a nightmare, even for me. I will avoid her at all costs.
Dr. Chapman is very knowledgeable, and extremely funny. She took the usually boring subject of history and made it fun. She is very negotiable with deadlines and test dates, which was nice. She does grade hard on the quizzes and exams though. I loved her class, and I would recommend her to anyone.
Professor Chapman is a great professor. She is really funny and nice, and she is also very willing to help on papers. It was hard work, but it was worth it and I learned so much.
Dr. Chapman was so interesting to listen to, and so enthusiastic about her subject! Every class period I learned something new and interesting, and she is especially helpful and understanding if you show that you are willing to put in the time to learn the subject matter. I would recommend her classes to anyone!
Dr. Chapman quickly became one of my favorite teachers. She is extremely helpful and passionate about what she does. She is a hard grader and expects a lot out of her students but that is no suprise if you are taking her for an upper level history class. I would recommend her for any personn with an interest in history.
Dr. Chapman is a very passionate professor who loves her job dearly making it much easier to get into the material.
Chapman is the COOLEST professor ever. She's very interested in helping you excel. I'm not a history person AT all, but I loved this course. Highly highly reccomend
Honestly the BEST professor I've EVER had. I'm not a history major but I'd take another history class if she taught it. Very passionate, VERY helpful outside of class and such a genuine and sweet person. The tests can be challenging but if you study, you'll do fine. It's a class worth taking just because she teaches it! Everybody loved her!
Dr. Chapman is fantastic! I also took her Medieval Europe class, and she's my favorite history prof at GVSU. She's always willing to work with you and very helpful! Her classes are engaging and you actually learn something. Highly recommended!
I've taken 2 classes with Dr. Chapman. She is the sweetest, most caring, and certainly one of the BEST professors. EVER. She is passionate and has a true talent for teaching and working with students. She is so intelligent, but so normal and kind. I am so impressed by her ease in the classroom. She is an inspiration and her passion is contagious!
She is the nicest lady you will ever meet! Super into everything that she is talking about and if you visit her office she actually helps you out a lot in any way you need, I loved her
LOVE LOVE LOVE Her. She is very helpful, really cares about her students, as long as you read and do the work you'll get a good grade! Had no interest in this topic but she made things interesting! Take her if you can!!!!
Dr. Chapman is AMAZING!!!!!!! Take her if you get the chance. She is full of energyy and fun. She explains the concepts very well. She is very helpful and very friendly. She gets to know all of her students by name. TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!
Universally disliked by the Making of Europe class. Makes us feel like our papers could all be titled "History according to the infallible Dr. Chapman" To get an A, you need to throw tons of detail into expressing HER opinion in your papers. I'm stuck with her for 3 more semesters, and I sincerely hope I never have to write another word for her.
I loved her as a professor. She made history really fun and kept me entertained and interested the whole class. I made sure I read what i was suppose to and i was fine.
This professor changed the course of my education. Her lectures are thoughtfully laid out and contain a lot of information derived from her medievalist training and research. Working hard is a must (no easy grades here), but if you prove you are willing to put in the effort, she will do everything she can to help advance your academic career.
Dr. Chapman is so sweet and enthusiastic! She makes learning history fun and interactive. Her pop quizzes are kinda hard so make sure you do your reading, and she's kind of a hard grader on papers. But she's a great Prof, knows her stuff and is always willing to help.
One of my favorite profs. She is so energized and passionate about what she teaches it makes me a better student.
Extremely knowledgeable in her courses. Very intimidating at first. Expect a lot of reading and memorizing of facts and terms. I'd say this course is intended for those who are TRULY interested in European civilization and not just taking it for a gen ed, like myself.
Amazing professor! I was really nervous about the course at first but once I got a system going with my terms everything went well. Highly recommend! She makes history super interesting.
Funny but says her "W"'s oddly. tough grader, doesn't usually give above a C on her papers. Midterm wasn't bad though!
Professor Chapman is great! She is so motivational and makes history interesting for a non-history major. She is also so cute because she gets so passionate into her teaching. She is very understanding, friendly, and helpful towards her students. However, be prepared to study her quizzes can be a little difficult, especially her pop quizzes.
She is adorable and funny! I love her. The passion she has for teaching and just wanting to see her students do well, I've never seen anything like it. Her tests and quizzes are hard, you have to study cause they're mostly fill in the blank. TRUST her with your learning. She is VERY intelligent and also experienced. She studied at Yale and England.
Chapman is a great professor! You have to read a lot but the lectures can be interesting. She makes them interesting at least. The quizzes can be difficult but if you study the terms and take notes in class you'll be fine!
Excellent professor. One of the best I have ever had. The class is interesting, if you Ancient and Medieval European history. She does grade strictly on the papers, but its in an effort to make you a better writer. Always willing to work with the class to change dates of tests and papers due. She really wants you to learn, like a real teacher.
I would not take her class again. I would recommend taking an American History class unless you are interested in European History. There is a lot of reading which becomes too overwhelming and not do able. She gives 5 pop quizzes that are very difficult if you are not interested in the subject. The midterm and final are hard.
best teacher at grand valley, as long as you want to do well, you will!
I absolutely LOVE Dr. Chapman! I wish I could take more classes by her. She is so friendly and she keeps the class interesting. You can tell she loves her job and she really takes the time to get to know her students. I would highly recommend her!!
She is passionate about what she teaches. Makes class fun and interesting. In a 200 level class her papers were tough and its not an easy class but its impossible. I really enjoyed having her as a professor. Highly recommend!
She's SUPER Passionate about history. She loves her job and occupation. Difficult essays but exams and quizzes are easy. Reading is highly recommended and if you attend class you'll do fine!
You will either love or hate this prof. I hated her. She is extremely strict about attendance, you cannot leave class for any reason. If she catches you on facebook or your phone, you are kicked out of class. There is a ton of reading and you better not skip it because there are quite often pop quizzes. She talks loud and pronounces why as Hwy.
I love history and I have always found medieval European history but I did not like the way this class was taught. 75 percent of the class lectures were related to religious material which I find boring. She could have spent time talking about castles, domestic life, warfare, and the black death. Also, she assigns four lengthy portfolios.
She is such a nice lady! She loves what she teaches and makes each lesson very interested. However, there are pop quizzes nearly every week and they are quite difficult. She's a strict grader so don't plan to bs anything. The class is tough but it is fun. Keep up on your readings and study the vocab words and it will make your life much easier.
Professor Chapman is the BEST professor I have ever had. She's so passionate and that shows during lectures. There are no tests besides the midterm and final. Attendance is not mandatory but there are 5 pop quizzes which motivate you to go to class. She does lots of activities, movies, and opportunities for points. Read outside of class!
She is incredibly passionate about her field. So much worldly knowledge and interest in history it's inspiring to listen to her. While there are many different topics in the course to keep you occupied, she does a great job connecting everything and tries to organize information so you have less confusion. The most enthusiastic teacher, love her!
Professor Chapman is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. She is always in a good mood. Her enthusiasm and love of history really makes the material presented in class easy to understand and retain. 10/10 would recommend to anyone.
I really enjoyed having Professor Chapman. As someone who doesn't enjoy history very much, her enthusiasm and energy made this an interesting gen ed. In the beginning of the course, I was sort of surprised at the amount of work required in this class, since the majority takes it for a gen ed. However, the work isn't difficult if you put in effort.
Dr. Chapman is a wonderful women, she truly cares about all of her student. She is always looking for the BEST interest of you. If you are struggling with any of her homework assignments go and see her, she will work with you're schedule. I wish every teacher was as good as her!
Professor Chapman is a great person to have leading you through the course. She cares deeply about history and is passionate about helping students learn it as well. There are pop quizzes and it's a lot of reading but if you keep up you'll do fine. She is a pretty tough grader for a 100 level class but in the end it helps you do better. Recommend!
She is a good professor for this class. She is very passionate about the material and really cares about your grade. The lectures go by pretty quickly, and there are pop quizzes over the vocabulary, but she gives a heads up a class or two in advanced.
She is really passionate and cares about her students. It is very important to stay on top of the vocab in the textbooks. She is a tough grader when it comes to papers, so it is important to see her out of class to have her review your paper.
If you are not a history major, do not take this class with Dr. Chapman. She loves history and expects way too much out of a 100 level class. If you read and take notes on your own time, what you wrote down will not match at all what she covers the next day in her lecture. Would not recommend unless you absolutely LOVE history.
Prof Chapman is my favorite professor! She really cares about her students and is happy to help with anything at any time! She has two papers a semester each have to be one page long and then her exams are easy! She really makes history fun instead of boring and puts on a lot of videos.
Prof Chapman is a kind person and a very good teacher. She's incredibly knowledgeable on her topics and she's very passionate about her profession. That being said, she has very high expectations for her students and her assignments are very long and she grades them harshly. Unless you're going to specialize in her field, do not take her class.
She really knows the material and is very willing to help if it is needed. She does her best to keep the class engaged and in discussion and when the class is, it is more enjoyable.
I took her European civilizations class and it was really hard compared to other 100 level history classes. she talks condescending if you try to ask her a question in office hours. I say try because she wont even answer your question. She gives a ton of homework and her pop quizzes are hard. I had to study before almost ever class.
Obviously an expert medievalist but often forgets students aren't. Can be infuriatingly condescending, but also encouraging. Cares about the students and the class and is enthusiastic. Readings can be long and very hard, making the reading quizzes impossible whether you've read or not. Wouldn't take again nor recommend for non history buffs.
Chapman expects you to know everything in the readings, and if you don't she will condescendingly tell you the correct answer Make sure you challenge every grade she gives you. She's admitted to me that she grades incorrectly. This is the hardest honors sequence. If you're unlucky enough to take this class, make sure you don't have a social life
You don't learn history until 2-3 weeks in. Overly enthusiastic about bloodletting, very wishy-washy. 1/3 of my class dropped out after the 1st semester. If you go to office hours she will pretty much give you what you want. ONLY USE WORLDCAT, BOOKS & MEDIA, AND ACADEMIC SEARCH PREMIER she wont have it any other way. Try to find another sequence.
Professor Chapman is a nice woman. She is extremely passionate about history and unfortunately thinks it is a way bigger deal than it really is. If you arent a history major, like me, DO NOT TAKE. She is nice, but you will be spending too much time on history than what should be the case if you are just taking it as gen ed. Very stressful
Terrible Professor. Most condescending person I've met. Don't go to her office hours or she'll make you cry.
I personally loved Dr. Chapman. She was by far the kindest woman I have ever met. Her class does require quite a bit of reading, but it's college so... She is clear on what she wants and if you are respectful to her, then she'll be respectful to you. She changed due dates if she saw students were stressed, so she really cares. Take her!
she's a wonderful woman, don't get me wrong, but she will treat you like you're a history major and will expect you to know everything a history major does. tons of reading, vague assignment guidelines then she lowers your grade for not doing something she never mentioned, overly harsh grader with little helpful feedback. my whole class did poorly.
This course has been the worst experience I've ever had as a student. The requirements for essays and papers rarely line up with her own expectations and doesn't follow SWS guidelines, making things difficult. If end up in this class PLEASE find good sources or she'll rip you apart. But, if you have an option to choose another sequence PLEASE do.
I didn't choose this sequence, instead, I was just handed this sequence. It is one of the toughest sequence. She assigns many portfolios and papers along with discussion questions. Although useful to our learning, it is overwhelming. Sometimes instructions aren't as clear. Aside from that, she is an overly enthusiastic woman and brings life.
Most condescending prof I've ever had. She gave me my first C I've ever received in my life. If you go to her office hours, she'll probably get mad at you while you sit there and cry
Treats the class as though it is a 300 level. For an introductiort class, she expects way too much. Going to office hours requires some very thick skin because she belittles and make you feel stupid. would not reccomend anyone ever to take her as a prof. Currently an A student but am failer her class. Easy assignments are graded too harshly.
Don't get me wrong, Dr. Chapman is a great person. However, she is very intelligent and knowledgeable, and expects all of her students to be the same way. I can't think of one person in my sequence that enjoys her class, and she has to be one of the harshest graders I have ever run into. If you can, do NOT take this class.
Really tough grader! She never treated it like it was a 100 level class. No matter how much you try, she will mark you down. Do not skip because she will assign random assignments in class and not post about them. She does not help when you need and assumes if one person knows the answer everyone else knows from high school or something.
She loves history and thinks that everyone else does too. She treats this like much more than a 100 level class, and teaches as if everyone has prior knowledge. I got low grades on assignments no matter how hard I tried; it just wasn't what she wanted to hear. She's very nice but I wouldn't take her for this class.
Dr. Chapman was a very nice and respected professor. However (I can't emphasize this enough), she expects you to read a lot especially from the textbook. Hardly any HW, only discussions or quizzes once a week that were a little difficult. Her grading is a little tough, but if you listen in class and read the textbook, you most likely will do fine.
I don't understand how this prof still has a score above a 4. A student walked out in my class because she is so frustrating. Very condescending and has unrealistic expectations for a 100 level course. The worst prof i've had in college.
She's a tough professor, but it's a capstone course so I was expecting this. I wouldn't recommend the course to people who aren't history majors, but if you are one, you'll learn a great deal from her. She's very well educated, if somewhat unorganized.
Avoid Chapman at all costs for a level 100 course. She is obviously very knowledgeable, but is meant to be a professor for higher level, graduate courses. SHE GRADES SO HARD, I don't think I ever got above a 90 percent on the homework despite spending 2+ hours on each assignment. Also, she would not allow second chances ever which seemed unfair.
She needs to be reevaluate how she teaches. Not only are in class questions unclear, her on paper questions are even worse. No where in the questions does she list all the requirements you need. So my knowledge to you: explain your answers to papers and discussions in major depth. When you think you answered the question, answer it more. Not fun.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She makes the class so much harder than it has to be. Marks you down for things she never asked about. If she asks for a paragraph write a whole page and include every single detail or you won't get credit. She will yell at you for no reason. I was taking notes and she yelled stop writing emails! absolutely miserable experience!
Avoid her at all costs. I've never gotten anything but an A in any history class until this course, this Chapman makes it impossible. She is very into what she teaches and is very knowledgable, but she assumes everyone already knows what she knows and is very hard on grading. Also is not clear on expectations at all.
I loved taking this course with Professor Chapman. Initially, instructions and expectations weren't clear for assignments such as discussions. That is my only complaint. She loves what she teaches, seems to genuinely care for her students, and does her best to make lectures engaging. To be successful, attend, read, do assignments and participate.
Do not take at all cost! She is an awful professor that gives little regard to student personal life outside of the classroom. If you take her do not bother asking questions since she expects you to know everything. She is disrespectful and arrogant. Good luck getting anything above a C unless you spend every minute of your time on this course.
I loved Chapman, she's super passionate and always willing to help her students out. She is a tough grader, but she always leaves super helpful comments that I feel really improved my writing. I wouldn't take her unless you are a history major, but overall she's probably my favorite professor.
Had her for HST495 and a thesis; she is SUPER smart and genuinely cares for her students, wants them to succeed and has a lot of connections outside GV to help them. She is always available to chat/for help but will challenge you to be the best you can be. Tough grader; would be best for HST majors only - take her if you're serious, not for gen eds
Reading the text book is a must, she will call on students to participate by answering random questions from the reading, she is very nice, just her style of teaching is not the best in general
Prof Chapman is great. Very knowledgeable, passionate, and wants every student to succeed. I talked to her for a few minutes after most classes and we were quickly on good terms. Clear on what to expect, willing to help everyone, and lenient. I cant understand how people rate her poorly, put in even the minimum effort (hst 102) and youll do well
Very good. Does lecture a lot, but homework and reading load were very manageable for a 100 level class. Helpful if you have questions. Has a great knowledge of the material. Flexible with due dates.
Took them recently and they were super knowledgeable in everything they spoke about, sometimes even having been to many of the places and having first-hand experience with certain things. Very caring professor who was always trying to help us and wants to see you succeed!
Professor Chapman is so nice and understanding. She is very clear of what she expects and does anything she can to help you understand the material. However, for a general education class, I think it is a little harder than most classes I have taken. If you are not a history buff, I'd recommend a different class. But she is an awesome person.
Dr. Chapman is a very tough grader and will give you the feedback you need even if it hurts. She is very devoted to her career and students and wants them to succeed. Start doing your reading and research as early as possible because it is a massive part of your grade. Would recommend this class for History Majors.
Lectures were not organized at all and readings hardly correlated to them. She will rip to shreds ANY assignment turned in. Nothing done all semester helps with the final essay so you're going in blind. Wasn't stressful all semester until the very end when given high expectations but no preparation on how to meet them.
I repeated the course with a different professor and I passed with an A+. Chapman's course was very disorganized what she taught had nothing to do with the final essay we did, she was very rude and yelled all the time. She expected everyone to know everything when this class is basically an Introduction to the study of History.
I really like Dr. Chapman as a person, however I found the class overly challenging for a 200 level class. She is a VERY harsh grader. She is very smart, and at times it felt like she forgot she was teaching at GV and not an ivy league graduate class. The class was interesting, however your grade is only based on a handful of essays.
Alice Chapman is a tough grader, even if you are usually a great writer your grade will upset you. Expect to have to read your textbook since she gives weekly quizzes on things that are in your textbook. She covers learning content AFTER you take your quiz. grades in class are compiled of your weekly quizzes, midterm, an essay, and final exam.
Really Passionate and Knowledgeable Professor. You can tell she loves her job. The biggest Problem is her lectures are disorganized, sometimes hard to follow, along with the fact that she goes too fast and gets annoyed when people ask to slowdown. Weekly Quizzes are easy, and I don't think she is as hard of a grader as others have said on here.
Very passionate about the coursework and history itself. However, the slides and way of teaching was confusing, taking notes was hard. Quizzes every week, annoying at times. Highly recommend if you enjoy history, covers Great Famine to WW2. Memorizing dates/years isn't required. She's like your grandma who talks about history like she was there.
Professor Chapman is very knowledgeable, but the class is quite challenging. Do the readings, participate in discussions, and use resources like Unstuck ai to help with prep - it really makes a difference.
Professor Chapman has very clear expectations and schedules regarding quizzes, homework etc. There is a lot of reading and it can be a bit of work. If you do what she wants and communicate with her she is very understanding. She loves what she teaches
..........
Dr. Chapman is very passionate. She grades hard, but she is a nice and caring professor. She comes off as tough, but she is actually really sweet if you do the reading and complete the homework. No phones allowed and attendance is mandatory.
