She basically teaches the book. I could study all night and day for weeks on end and still fail her tests. She talks very quiet and monotone so it is hard to pay attention in the class and listen to what she is saying. I basically had to teach myself the material. I struggled to come out of this class with a C-. Wouldn't recommend.
You could study for hours for her tests and still fail. The class average for the final was an F.
It will never matter how much time or how far in advance you start studying for her class, youll never pass a test. In lecture, she teaches one thing and then asks you a Learning Catalytics question after one example to make sure youre in class. The only thing she cares about is making sure people attend her horrible, Boeing lectures. Worst prof.
Honestly the worst. She is the most boring professor on planet earth, she reads DIRECTLY off her slides that she then puts online BUT attendance is mandatory and part of your grade. Take literally anyone else do not take her!!!!!!
A lot of people have a problem with her, but she's honestly fine. She's super sweet, which a giant step up from the rest of the chem professors. You will have to learn the material yourself, her lectures are hard to pay attention to, but she gives you all the powerpoints, with her notes on them. Just go through the powerpoints and you'll be fine.
I took her this semester for 102 and she is the sweetest. She reads directly off the powerpoint, but she provides practice exams for every test that are similar to the actual exams. After class she uploads her powerpoints with all the notes so you can go back and look at them. Overall her class is a lot better than other chemistry professors!
She is really nice, but it seems like she barely knows chemistry herself. I took AP Chemistry so I did fine, but most students really struggle because she doesn't know how to teach! Lectures are super boring because she reads directly off the slides, and doesn't know how to answer students' questions. If lecture wasn't mandatory, I would never go.
Dr. DeSimone is a great professor. I actually learn the material. The only thing with her class is that her exams are so hard. Her exams are nothing like the study guides. Use the study guide as a practice test not as a way to learn the course material. She is very kind and flexible outside of the classroom as long as you are transparent with her.
She gives a lot of resources to students. Homework is easy to get a 100 on and She provides practice tests that are exactly like the exam
You need a test bank to pass this class! Simple as that. Otherwise you will study her study guides, learn the material, attend lectures, and STILL fail. Also invest in chegg for your homework. You just copy and paste the homework and get a easy A. And you can do Learning Catalytics from home in your bed. Just set your alarm to do it.
This is a difficult course in itself, but she really isn't as bad as people make her out to be. She is very approachable with questions and wiling to help you out, you just have to ask for it. If you put in the effort you will see good results.
honestly just dont take her, just that simple. I made an F on the final and im majoring in chemistry if that tells you anything.
Dr. DeSimone is a great professor. She gives many resources, and she gives a lot of points for simply showing up to class. Her tests might be difficult in content but she gives practice exams that tell you exactly what you need to know for all of the exams.
If you fail this class, its your own fault. Dude she provides study guides for every exam and she even gave extra credit on the final, I dont see why her rating is so low. Her lectures arent riveting, but shes teaching general chemistry in an auditorium.
Not sure why DeSimone's rating is so low honestly. She does everything she can to help her students do well on tests by giving out study guides, practice exams, and extra review problems. Her lectures aren't exciting, but general chemistry is a pretty dull topic so you can't really blame her. She also gave out a few extra credit opportunities
I understand chemistry 101 is a lecture based course, but she still does a poor job of teaching. She hardly goes into detail and describes anything, most of class is just based solely off a power point that I could just as easily read outside of class. She has no energy and speaks in the same monotone voice the whole time that'll out you to sleep.
If you're very not into chemistry then Alice is not the teacher for you. She reads straight from powerpoints that she literally gives you and her example problems are nothing like the homework. If you don't go to class then you'll miss all of the in-class quizzes which count towards a homework grade. Tests don't have many questions - easy to fail.
I love her so much and she is the best teacher I have had this semester. She really cares about her subject. Her test arnt hard just look at the practice test or try listening in class <3 sending all the love to desimon!
I dont understand why her rating is so low. She is amazing and i find her to be very good at teaching. Im planning on taking her class for future semesters. I also like her vibe. She is a very good person and i find her class to be not too hard.
DeSimone is a nice person but not the best teacher. She reads straight from the powerpoint and does a poor job at explaining. She also talks pretty quietly if you are in a big lecture hall. Tests are pretty straight forward and class attendance is mandatory. If you have a decent understanding of HS chem you will do fine in the class.
Not horrible, not great, but definitely one of the better CH101 professors. She's fair, and generous with extra credit, but you might need to teach yourself sometimes. If you come to class and do just a little bit more work on top of the homework, you'll get an A.
She was the worst professor Ive ever had. Do not take her. Her lecture or practice exam was nothing like the actual exams. If I could redo the entire semester with another professor.. I definitely would.
Yall this class is so easy. I showed up to class everyday because you get so many points just for being in class and answering the LC questions, but I usually just did my other homework in class. She posts practice exams on blackboard and they are exactly like the tests. For most tests I just taught myself the material the night before. Take her!!!
Not a good professor at all and you should avoid at all costs. Very inconsiderate and not helpful at all. She refused to give me the .1 points that I needed to pass her class, even though I had perfect attendance and participation. You cannot pass her tests nor exam, no matter how much you study. Also very boring lectures. Do not take her!
Lecture was extremely boring. She speaks very monotone and quiet. She simply reads off of powerpoints. Her examples are elementary compared to the homework and tests. Don't take her.
If you get anything less than a B in this class, it's your fault. The only reason I didn't give her a 5 is because her lectures are pretty boring, but it's an intro level chemistry lecture. I didn't even do the reading, I just did the practice exams in the two days leading up to the test and the lowest I got was an 80. Also gives extra credit.
This is the worst structured class Ive ever taken. Tests are way too hard because you have to teach yourself all material. Way too shy to teach a lecture class and doesnt know how to explain anything.
STAY AWAY FROM DESIMONE!! The most boring lectures. If you dont pass her impossible tests, then you will not do well in her class. She is not nice via email and she is the reason I switched my pre-med major. She makes up her own plus/minus range, which she doesnt tell you until after your final grade is posted, and she will not change it at all.
super boring class but she is very straight forward for the tests. as long as you read the powerpoint which is very straight forward you should be fine. she gives practice exams before each test with the problems worked out and the test ends up being easier than the practice and online homework. she gives extra credit problems that go towards hw
If you want a daily nap take DeSimone's class, otherwise stay away. I went to almost every class and almost every day I just about fell asleep. She is so boring and reads straight of her powerpoints. If you miss one day be prepared to spend a lot of time catching yourself up as she moves at light speed every class.
She is just a terrible chemistry teacher that is about it
Just a boring class. She taught me the material well enough, but it was incredibly difficult to remain focused in her class. Her office hours are pretty narrow. The lab portion was boring and uncomfortable, although I know that wasnt her fault. I got a 75 on every exam, no matter how hard the material or how much I studied.
Insufferably bad chemistry teacher. I have always been, and still am, an A and B student. This is the only class I have ever gotten below a C in. There are 15+ hours of graded homework a week, and you have to get the answer right on the first try or you dont get the points for it. Tests are nothing like the homework either so its pointless.
Wouldn't recommend for your entry level chemistry. She reads straight from the Powerpoints and has difficulty answering any questions not straight from the slides. Tests are very difficult and unlike the practice exams she gives before hand. I have studied my life away for this class and at best, gotten an 80 on one exam.
Very boring lectures, but gives you way more resources than any other chem 102 professor. Practices tests, practice problems, old exams, study guides, recorded lectures. I printed the powerpoints out and followed along in class. Makes it somewhat easier to listen to.
Dr DeSimone is a well prepared lecturer, but the manner in which her lectures are given make you want to fall asleep. Her tests are extremely difficult and you have to work hard. But, she is available outside of class and the best option for freshman chemistry
The nature of this class is hard, but she really tries to teach it well! The book really helped me, and she gave lots of practice tests for practice before exams. Extra credit on review questions boosted my grade and the final wasn't too bad. She went to Harvard and is smart and caring. I enjoyed my time in class with her, and I would do it again!
I took her for CH101 and 102 and I am glad I did. 101 is so easy and I easily got an A+, but 102 is harder bc of the material. Her lectures are super boring and I only went for the participation points, but she gives so many practice tests to help with the exams. She is a great teacher, you just have to be ready to study hard. You get a drop test
Dr. DeSimone is a very nice lady, however her approach to the class is lacking in my opinion. She definitely provides the materials necessary to study (Practice Exams, Homework, etc.), however she turns the difficulty up an unnecessary amount on her tests, which are not similar to the practice exams at all. My class did not feel like a 100 level.
Her lectures are really boring and tough to get through. Be prepared to do a lot of math throughout the entire class and memorize formulas. It is very hard to focus and pay attention because of how boring the class is.
She is overall pretty good at explaining the content. The tests are more difficult than the practice, but she does give practice tests a week in advance before each exam.
DeSimone knows what she is talking about, but is very bad when it comes to explaining it to students. She makes things way more confusing than they actually are. Also, her practice exams are usually much easier than her actual exams and this often gives you a sense of false hope.
Desimone is not the best at explaining material, which kinda sucked. But she gives lots of resources when preparing for tests which helps. Even if you misunderstand some material, most of the class is easy enough for you to learn yourself online. Its not an easy A class but you wont be miserable. BTW the first test is the worst compared to others
Dont take her, anyone but her. She is nice, however, her test are extremely difficult . I wish I would have listened to the reviews and not taken her class.
Intro the chemistry isn't an easy class in its self and Desimone definitely tries to teach it to every student in ways for everyone to understand. If you participate in class, listen to the lectures, and get the homework done on time you should get an A.
I felt that her lectures didn't explain things clearly/thoroughly so I had to spend hours reading the textbook. Basically taught myself the class. However, she does give lots of practice resources for the tests which is really nice. As long as you put in the work, it's doable.
I took her class in Spring 2020. I struggled with understanding some of the material, but chemistry is a hard subject. The book helps if you're struggling with something, but overall she does a good job of teaching it. She also gives extra credit. Remember that lab is a big part of your grade, so succeeding here is vital to doing well in the class!
Well... this class was fine. Lectures were boring so I often watched at 2x speed and then taught myself the material a few days before the exam. Would not recommend, but I did get an A. I had some conflicts with tests, and she happily worked with me to fit my schedule. She does seem sweet, class is just very monotonous and the material is complex.
This class is very boring, but if you put in the work it will show in your grade. DeSimone is very helpful and flexible if you need to talk to her outside of class time. She provides clear outlines with exams and gives you lots of very helpful practice tests.
This class was really hard. Dr. DeSimone wasn't really available outside of class. She had her TA's for office hours but they weren't very helpful. If you pay attention in the lectures you should be fine. She gives plenty of practice problems and even has practice exams the week before each exam which is very helpful.
She doesn't come close to preparing you for the exams that end up deciding your grade.
DeSimone was a great professor. She gave practice problems, practice tests, and extra credit on tests. The course work is hard but she gives many examples and opportunities to learn the content. Attendance is mandatory and the textbook is used.
If you want to teach yourself, go for it. She seems brilliant and like a great professor, however her teaching style and my learning style did not mix. I cannot even imagine how many students she influenced to drop pre health tracks. I had to W this class and refuse to hate my life.
Not a good professor. Have to be in attendance to get a lot of the credit. Very boring and would take anyone else for this class if possible. 0/10 experience overall!
If I could go back I absolutely would not take this professor again. The material was hard but she made the tests ridiculously hard. I've never been more frustrated by a class because you would work hard and it wouldn't matter. She changed her test style last year so the practice and old exams she would give didn't prepare you for the tests.
Good teacher overall but it takes time to learn how to study for her. Coming in I bombed a few tests in CH 101 with her but moving into CH 102 with her I got the hang of it. Just put in the work weekly on reviewing content and making sure you're up to date on lectures. Her final is usually pretty doable if you study the broader topics from the Chs.
Dr. DeSimone's class is certainly not the easiest or the hardest chem class in the world, but its more than doable. She is somewhat boring and her lectures drag on, but she prepares you well for exams which aren't too challenging. overall i would take her again - shes good, but not great. She also certainly cares about every students success
Overall nice person, however, tests were extremely hard. The practice test she gave did not help at all and was nothing like the test. The class met 5x a week basically because, on the days in which we didn't have her, we had to watch a lecture video to prepare for her class the next day. You have to carve out a lot study time,in order to do well.
I took her for CH 102 and enjoyed her much more than my 101 teacher. You watch/ take notes on a lecture before class and do a participation quiz and then she does more examples in class. I liked her teaching style but it's more of a teach yourself and then go to class so she can show you how to do the problems. She was nice and knowledgeable.
Class requires a lot of time studying and watching lectures outside of class. Extra credit quizzes and attendance grades helped, but the exams were definitely harder than her CH101 tests.
I took Dr. DeSimone for both CH 101 and CH 102 when classes were all virtual due to Covid. She explained the material super well and provided practice exams that were helpful. The classes are difficult but nothing compared to ochem. Id highly recommend taking general chemistry with Dr. DeSimone.
She is seriously one of the worst professors at Bama. Her tests are NOTHING like the reviews so there's really no way to prepare for them. Made me drop pre-med and change my major. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Professor DeSimone is a very nice professor. It was hard for me to pay attention to her lectures in class, but I would watch the course videos she would post, and it was much easier to understand. You will not do well in this class if you wait till the last couple of days to prep for the test. Going through the online textbook helps a lot also.
Worst teacher to take for ch101.Many times during lecture students asked her to explain something and she wouldn't know how. Went to every class, yet was always confused bc she doesn't know how to lecture. Homework/her practice exams won't help you prepare for her tests. One time several TAs couldnt even solve a problem on her practice test. AVOID!
Practice tests/homework dont help prepare you for the test. Lectures are so boring and most of the time she doesnt know how to explain any questions students ask her. Several TAs couldn't even solve one of her problems on a practice test one time! Ive went to every class, yet I still am confused... Always had an A in sciences classes except hers.
She is the best out of a sea of not great professors for chem 2. It is a teach yourself class; you will have to read the book. She gives a good amount of extra credit. Lots of study materials, but they didn't always help. I got C's and low B's on the exams and did pretty good on the final. Be ready to put in the work.
Be prepared to teach yourself most of the material outside of class. The way she lectures is hard to follow along with and understand. She only gives one homework assignment per chapter but they all take over 2 hours to complete. She gives a lot of study materials for her exams but they're not always super helpful. She gives extra credit.
Chem 2 is a pretty tough subject that requires consistent practice in order to do well in the course. You can't just go to the lecture and be fine from my experience. Professor DeSimone was extremely nice and helpful when I asked for her assistance and provided plenty of opportunities to practice the material. Tests are a bit trick but doable.
Alice was a really nice person, but her exams were difficult. Also, during her lectures, she normally does one or two practice problems and then moves on to the next topic so she moves incredibly fast. I didnt have the best study habits for this class until the final exam :( so my word of advise is to rewrite your notes after class.
Take DeSimone!!! The nature of the class is hard, but if you are willing to put in the time you will do well in the class. She provides many past tests, practice exams, and extra study materials. She also posts recorded lectures for you to review when studying. She is super sweet and very accessible outside of class.
Professor DeSimone is probably your best option for a CH102 professor. The class is not easy, but it does help that she gives up to three points of extra credit on your final grade and you also have a drop test. Make sure to do the practice exams and past tests, study the powerpoint slides hard, and you should succeed. Overall, she did a good job!
Be prepared to have to come to class, rain or shine, laptop fully charged b/c if you can't participate in the lecture questions your grade will reflect it. No time to write anything from the powerpoint, so you must commit time before or after class to take notes. The homework takes 3 hours, doable with the hints, but on the exam you won't get that.
She teaches at a very quick pace, as there is a lot of material to cover. MY BEST ADVICE: when you start talking about acidity and pH, PAY ATTENTION. That got real confusing, real fast. 4 of the 10 chapters covered were blended into 1 it felt like. Drop test is nice, and can get a 1.5 point bonus for answering the review questions correctly.
Very nice lady, not the best professor but gets it done nonetheless
Fair bit of homework, but it all helps you a lot for the test. She has extra credit assignments on mastering basically every week. But my favorite thing is that she provides so many resources for the tests. She posts annotated lecture slides, records lectures, posts practice exams on top of the assigned pretest, a study guide and past tests.
Moves extremely fast during lectures and provides poor example problems for new topics. Impossible to meet with outside of class and couldn't provide satisfactory answers to questions. Ended up having just to teach myself using the book. Study every single possible thing about Acids/Bases, gas laws/rates, and thermo.
This teacher is horrible and makes me go into a depression every time I hear her speak.
She is a caring person. However her lectures are extremely boring and hard to stay engaged with due to her monotone voice and lack of stimulating ideas
She goes really fast in class and you have a ton of homework, but you get a drop test and she gives you practice exams that are pretty similar to the real exam.
Desimone is not a bad teacher. Chem just sucks and it's difficult. She's a very solid choice for a teacher. Not amazing, but not terrible by any means. She's fair with what she does and the practice problems during class help. I didn't take AP Chem but managed to survive. If you end up with her don't worry you got a safe choice.
Professor DeSimone is an excellent chemistry professor and covers all the topics on the tests she gives. There were extra credit opportunities which were actually very helpful when it came to learning. Overall a great teacher with a slightly difficult subject.
DeSimone was an ok professor, probably not the best but definitely not the worst. There's lots of homework, but it helps you learn. She also gives practice tests, but they always seemed way easier than the real thing. You really have to put in the work for this class. Also, attendance is mandatory and your grade will reflect it. Does give drop test
If you study and do the practice exams, you will do good.
Go to class and get the participation points its easy points. Her study guides really help when it comes to the tests. Chemistry is not a fun subject but if you put in the effort you should do fine in this class. It is also helpful that she records her lectures so rewatch them if you are stuck on something.
In a world with few good chem teachers, DeSimone is amazing! Without a doubt my favorite this past semester. This class isn't a free A or anything, but your work pays off in this class, and I highly recommend for CH 101!
Good teacher for this class and explains things well. Just doing the homework and review prepares you for the tests very well.
Do not take this professor unless you took AP Chem in high school and/or have a strong chemisty background. I went to every single class and the only thing I got out of it was the participation points on Learning Cataytics. If I had not had gotten a tutor in the beginning of the year I would have no doubt failed this course.
There were no lectures. You came in and did an experiment with no background information. Could be a lot better.
Participation grade is based on clicker questions. She moves really fast but records every lecture and posts them online. Lots of homework and material, so it is easy to fall behind. She is not good at answering questions. Find a better teacher if you can, but she isn't the worst.
I would NOT take this class if you did not take AP Chem in high school and pass with flying colors. She basically thinks everyone already understands the whole course. My grade is solely based on the $$$ I spent on tutors and my own work I put in trying to figure concepts out via google. She puts her lectures online, but they rarely made sense.
She's super smart but she's an awful professor. Be prepared to teach yourself cuz her lectures are unhelpful and really boring.
I liked Dr. Desimone. Her class was difficult but she taught well and had a lot of extra credit opportunities and practice tests
I think DeSimone is a great chem professor. There is a lot of homework with prelectures and postlectures due nearly every weekday, and problem sets due every Sunday. DeSimone does not utilize the recitation period except for tests. Overall, I think this course can be difficult for people without much chem experience, but I would recommend DeSimone.
Her lectures are okay. She is very smart but assumes that her students understand the topics already. I spent a lot of time outside of class with tutors to try and help my grade. She is nice and tries hard for her students.
This class was a very positive experience. She truly wanted you to succeed, which is not the most common in my experience with general chemistry professors. There was a lot of extra credit throughout, and the tests were fair. The final exam was also a very fair test. Their was a lot of homework, but you could honestly get it all done Sunday.
Her tests are only easy if you put the work in. she has pre-lecture, post lecture, & in-class participation grades. Chemistry is not easy to most people, so you have to study, do the homework, & really pay attention in class. 8 times out of 10 her lectures are confusing. I recommend getting a tutor or going to the free chemistry tutoring with UA.
Bro I cant I cant do this anymore I am genuinely questioning my sanity please please just take someone else please
She does not use recitation outside of exams. The exams are not very difficult, but most of the answers and important topics are in the textbook and not included in lecture. Attendance is mandatory. She moves very fast through lecture and does not always answer questions. She just reads off the slides and does a few example problems.
This professor was never very clear and most of the time I would teach myself. She would often lose everyone in lecture and skip over questions people asked in lecture. Sometimes she told us to just look stuff up or even that she did not know so at least she was honest ig. She takes attendance but it is really bad.
The concepts behind the problems she works in class are not clear in the powerpoints she uses, so you have to read the textbook to understand. She posts past and practice exams for each of the four exams, but she has a cumulative final exam. The only grades are the 4 exams, final, lab, and homework, but there are extra credit options for the hw.
I had a great time in her class and learned a lot! Throughout the semester there were many chances to earn extra credit and practice. Chemistry is a hard and frustrating subject for a lot of students, but Professor Desimone makes learning the material more enjoyable. Most of my classmates agree and most everyone is trying to take her for CH 102.
Dr. DeSimone is really nice and respectable. You will study a lot out of the textbook to learn but I don't really blame her for the content being bad. She is also very helpful for such a hard class. I would recommend her if you do not have a strong chem background. It is still very hard but she is at least willing to help and gives extra credit.
Dr. Desimone was a fairly easy teacher. Her tests were straightforward, and she would provide study guides and practice tests to prepare. The homework consisted of practice problems which can take a while, but if split up over multiple days it's not bad. Best chemistry teacher for 101. Just do the practice tests and read the TB and you'll get an A.
going to class feels like a chore because you know you'd get more out of using the time to read the textbook or even just take notes straight off of the slides. desimone is a fairly boring lecturer, spending too much time on review while speeding through new content so that you can't actually take notes. learningcatalytics forces attendance.
She is awesome! She offers so much extra credit, is super helpful when you got to office hours! She post her slides in advance so that you can go over it before if you want to! She also assigns pre and post lectures which are sometimes a hassle but they help your grade out if you do them! She also gives you so many materials to study/ past test!
Her lectures can be boring but she does a lot of practice problems to help you grasp the concept. She also records all of her lectures. Her tests are very math based but pretty similar to homework/review questions. She also posts a ton of practice exams and offers extra credit. Highly recommend!
Good prof, nothing special. Lotta practice exams and extra credit available. You must come to class bc of learningcatalytics. Prepare for the 4 midterms well and do all the homework (can max out at 107%) and you'll be fine. Exams are easy if you study a bit. Not 5 stars bc I'm salty--was literally 0.4% away from an a+ and she refused to round up.
I'm normally a straight A student but couldn't pass her tests. Everything outside of it was easy but the tests were hard & math heavy. She was good about providing practice tests, previous tests & videos explaining. Attendance is supposed to be mandatory for LC but doesn't count for accuracy. U can log on at home--watch the lecture if u do this.
Best professor for CH101. There is a lot of homework, but it's really easy if you show up to class.
Alice DeSimone can go pretty fast during lectures sometimes. She can do a great job during simpler topics, but I was completely lost for thermochemistry. She also uses Mastering Chemistry which has a LOT of work. Make sure you attend class, she uses Learning Catalytics for a grade.
As someone who comes from a high school that didn't offer chemistry i was terrified of taking this class and i am so glad i took professor DeSimone i could not recommend her more great lectures and the tests weren't to bad. if you put in effort you will pass this class, as with most classes in collage you will not coast by.
There are loads of bonus point/extra credit opportunities, tons of practice tests for every exam that are extremely similar to the actual exam, videos of her working out all of the problems, etc. It's a lot of work, but if you put forth effort and pay attention in class you won't have any problem doing well. I liked her a lot!
Very kind person, but she's hard to access outside of class. Lectures are straightforward, taking notes is a good idea since there's a lot of drawings. Tests were hard for me, though. The math problems were easy, but the core concept subjects are riddled with trick questions designed to make you second guess yourself.
Before I say anything I just want to make this clear, this is an extremely hard class; But DeSimone makes the hard coursework and pain someone better. She's really nice and obviously has a passion for chemistry, if it was not for her my C- would have certainly been a D.
Professor DeSimone is sweet, kind, and wants you to succeed in her class. She is very accessible outside of class and will walk you to her office to show you where to find her. Her lectures are recorded and posted online. She answers emails quickly (< 48 hrs) and is very understanding. The course is tough, but she makes it as easy as it can be.
Attendance is mandatory and counts for 10% of your final grade. Dr. DeSimone clearly shows that she knows a lot about the topics she teaches and is interested in them. She will answer ANY question asked during the lecture, big or small, to help you out. Lots of opportunity for extra credit as well.
Offers so many resources to be success and lots of extra credit. Its not an easy class but if you can capitalize on all the homework assignments, Lab grade, and do all study modules and pre-test you will be successful. She also gives 3-4 of her past test she's given for you to use as practice and her exam is normally very similar. The best.
This class is very difficult. Lectures and powerpoints come straight from the book. Homework takes 2+ hours per assignment and is not helpful for test prep. Practice problems are unlike test problems. Extra credit is offered but is not enough to help your grade.
Chem is not my thing regardless, but she is so boring. I feel asleep in class all the time, and the tests are very hard. SHe does clicker questions in class so you need to go, they are graded. She gives a lot of study materials before tests but they are still hard, and the final is cumulative.
Do not take this class unless you want to be in a deep depression for 4 months. Desimone is very polite and intelligent. This is in no way directed towards her, however she needs to change her lecture methods significantly. The curriculum for this course is extremely difficult and unless you're a chemistry genius this class will be awful.
As any chemistry curriculum is expected to be difficult, DeSimone was very good at explaining the concepts to help you understand. She provides a ton of materials for tests. All I've done is go to class, go over notes, and all practice materials. Homework is often more difficult than tests but helpful when first learning the material.
Chemistry is not my forte, but DeSimone made it very manageable. She was accessible and willing to help outside of class. During office hours, she patiently worked through problems and clarifies concepts. She also has her pre-recorded lectures which allowed for review outside of class. I highly recommend her for anyone taking chemistry.
DeSimone was probably one of the best options when it came to taking General Chemistry. She is such a sweet professor and if she sees you are working hard, she will help you however she can. She does have Learning Catalytic quizzes for attendance grades (just participation), and gives so many resources before a test. Do those, and you will be fine!
She reads straight from the lectures, at fast pace to get through all the material. If the class had trouble figuring something out, she would still move on, and not try to teach the material again. Test are math heavy and word problems can be very challenging and complex. I was 0.05 away from a different letter grade and she would not budge.
Worst class I have ever taken. A general chemistry class should not be this difficult. I do not know anyone who did well in her class. She reads off slides (very monotone), so lecture is extremely boring and you have to teach yourself the material. Would not recommend to anyone. Take someone else if you can!
DeSimone is a good professor, however her classes are pretty hard if you're not super chem/math savvy. I had trouble keeping up during lecture, especially as a first semester freshman. However, she is a pretty understanding prof in terms of attendance which I appreciate.
Dr. DeSimone is an incredibly caring professor! She takes time to meet with students outside of lecture. She gives her previous tests and practice exams for you to take to ensure mastery. With all of this being said, this is a Chemistry course, and it is hard. Lectures can be boring, but this isn't her fault. CLICKER QS!!
The best thing about DeSimone is how online-accessible her class is. All slides are posted at the beginning of the year, and she provides multiple practice tests for each exam. However, her lectures are poorly paced and confusing. Use her slides to guide your notes from the textbook. She refused to allow my friend's disability accommodations.
Very good teacher her lectures are great just be aware that the exams for this class can surprise you, make sure you study more than you think you may need to because there are certain exams that are harder than the lectures may seem.
Desimone is a great professor and I would recommend anyone taking Chem 101 to take her! She is great at explaining concepts during lecture, and helps outside of class as well. She is very sweet and funny, tries to make class as fun as she can for her students. Beware of learning catalytics questions that she has every class. Tests aren't too hard.
Very hard class for the average student. Goes through the lecture slides very fast. The exams are hard. She does post lectures and a lot of content for you to study, but the class is just very difficult.
Alice Desimone is an amazing professor! Chemistry is a hard class, so naturally people will rank chemistry professors low, but don't be intimidated. Desimone is caring and knowledgeable, and she provides many resources for students to do well in her class, including extra credit, practice tests, etc.
Dr. DeSimone, though she shows that she cares about chemistry, does not command the 250+ person lecture that she is given very effectively. Though it is totally out of her control, the format of the class combined with her teaching methods make it difficult to pay attention. In a smaller classroom, I can see myself doing great with her as a teacher
This class is quite difficult. She's very caring but it's just that you have to learn several chapters at once and you have to memorize a lot when taking the tests because most of the material isn't given. The tests are difficult. If you aren't great at Chem and you aren't required to take this, don't take it for a natural science.
Professor DeSimone's CH102 class can be challenging, but she provides great resources like practice tests and recordings to help you succeed. Using Unstuck study alongside the textbook and her materials made studying much more manageable.
Don't know why she has so many good reviews on here. Exams are very hard, she did not curve any of my classes' exam even when the class average was a 65. The extra credit is practically nothing, just a waste of time to do it. Many resources to study but the amount of work and studying I did to just get a D on an Exam was very frustrating.
Desimone is the best option for chem 101 in all honesty. Her lectures cover all the material, she explains examples well, and she offers a good bit of extra credit. Beware that for her, like most chem 101 professors, attendance is mandatory but she counts in through learningcatalytics so you could technically do it outside of class.
Dr. DeSimone is a decent lecturer, but what I appreciated most about her class throughout the semester was the amount of material she would put out for exam preparation. She uploads old tests, answer keys, study guides with exactly what to memorize, etc. on Blackboard. She also records and uploads all her lectures.
CH 101 is a hard class, but Dr. DeSimone did a great job explaining the material and making sure to get through everything in a timely manner. She was very approachable and easy to access outside of class.
There is no reason an introductory class should be this hard. Exam study material was provided but the tests were very difficult with no curve given. She goes through the lecture slides fast and is ok at explaining the concepts. Lots of homework every week plus a pre/post lecture every day of class.
Alice is such a kind woman and she clearly cares a lot about her job. Her lectures are easy to follow if you're paying attention, however, if you zone out for even a second you'll most likely end up lost.
Best chem professor by far. Lectures are fast-paced but she uploads the edited presentations at the end of the chapter. She reviews test material and has plenty of resources available on Blackboard. Final is worth 25% of grade, no curve, but plenty of extra credit.
Dr. DeSimone is probably one the best CH 101 teachers Alabama has to offer but not one of the best ever. She gives you old tests because they are nothing like the test your going to get. The final alone dropped me a letter grade. She will not round you .02 when you are on the brink of the +/- cut off and go to office hours weekly.
Dr. DeSimone was the best option for CH 101. She gives us plenty of material for the upcoming exams such as old exams, practice problems, and a study guide. During lecture it can get a bit boring as she basically reads off the slides but she makes the material easy to digest for the most part. The homework did get annoying but would take her again.
She's not as bad as people make her out to seem. She records all lectures and all of the slides are there from day one. I recommend doing the study guide she gives out as soon as she posts it and working on the practice exams and the past exams. If you do this then you'll pass the exams.
Her lectures involved lots of example problems which was great. Attendance was taken by answering questions during the lecture (you could answer them from anywhere). 4 big tests + final with the lowest test being dropped. It helps to work thru problems in class because the lecture slides posted don't have the work solved.
She makes chemistry jokes at the beginning of each lecture and keeps that energy the whole time. Answers any question during class even if they seem stupid. Chem 101 is a tough class for anyone who didn't take AP chem in high school, but she made it as easy as she could. Tons of homework. Seriously. You'll be fine if you show up and do the homework
Did the best she could with a giant lecture hall of students. Not an exceptional professor, but works just fine for a 101, especially if you're not a chemistry major. Exams are all multiple choice and mostly math; pre- and post-lectures for every single lecture are easy to forget about, but you get no less than half-credit for late work.
She is very good with giving online materials such as practice exams and study guides. Lectures are a little boring, but cover the material well.
Dr DeSimone was a good professor, probably the best for CH101. She started out every lecture with a chemistry related joke. The tests were all multiple choice, and she gave us lots of material to practice with to study for tests. She goes very quick during lecture slides, but she always posted an annotated version when class was over.
This class has so much homework but it does usually help. I will mention, sometimes DeSimone can talk slow but move fast. If she is going too fast, she does record the lectures for you to review and her office hours are very flexible. If you genuinely pay attention and put in the work, you'll be fine.
Firstly, Dr. DeSimone is brilliant. Yet, she does a wonderful job of making complex topics and ideas more easily graspable. She also provides a plentiful amount of content to help prepare for exams. She gave at lease 3 different practice exams for each exam and a study guide for each, and both were very indicative of what would be on the exam.
i didn't love her but i didn't hate her either. chemistry is hard, so be ready to study. she is one of the better professors for 101 - i would definitely recommend her over others. she was very monotonous and went pretty fast sometimes, but her lectures were very helpful if you paid attention. exams would've been doable if i studied a little more.
Super helpful and kind professor, and you can ask online questions, so you don't have to raise your hand in class. Always askers the online questions and is really thorough. Attendance is mandatory but its online, the class is hard but that's just chemistry, would take her if you have to take chem
She is super passionate about chemistry and loves to teach, but her teaching style just did not translate to me whatsoever. She is super lecture heavy and it's almost like she way over-complicates topics. She does offer a decent amount of extra credit though on homework and has a drop exam grade.
Although this class was very difficult for me, Professor DeSimone provided so many helpful materials and I have nothing but good things to say about her teaching style. She records her lectures and you can do attendance from anywhere but it definitely helps to go to her class. Pre and post lectures are good grade booster but I would forget a lot.
Alice does NOT care if you succeed in her class. I went to her office hours for some guidance on how to do better on her exams and boost my grade and she responded with "I don't really have any advice for you, I would just drop the class if you aren't happy with your grade."
She is not helpful at all. she's one of those smart people who assumes everyone is just as smart/should be.
Anyone who says she gives extra credit lied. She doesn't care if you succeed in the class. The class average on the last midterm test was a 60 and she just laughed. Her lectures are so long and boring and hard to follow. I would find a better professor if I were you. I wouldn't take her for a tues-thurs class because the 75 min lectures are insane.
Chemistry is hard enough on its own, but she doesn't do a very good job of making difficult topics understandable. I learned more from Youtube and reading directly from the book, so mandatory attendance was really a waste of time for me other than the participation credit. Tests did not reflect the HW questions. Yet, probably the best option.
I think DeSimone is great, she's very sweet, smart, and good at answering questions. This chemistry course is very difficult, but that isn't due to her. There is kind of a lot of work involved with this course, so be prepared. At first, it felt a little bit overwhelming, but you get used to it, and if you actually do it, it helps lots on the exams.
This is a hard course already, but with her teaching style its borderline terrible. Alice lectures the entire class time with 30-50 slides but most of the information isn't teaching the topic, it's just going over what's typed out. The lectures don't actually prepare you for the exams or homework and you're better off watching youtube videos...
She was a great professor and always answered questions. She is really good at teaching if you just focus. She gives you exams from the past, like three years to use as review, but the new exams are always different and, in my opinion, harder. There is a lot of "homework" but it's just there to help you.
Very nice lady. Her lectures are good and she explains things well. She clearly outlines what is on the test but she likes a few trick questions. Chem is never an easy class but this is the best option. There are plenty of homework/daily assignments which can be annoying but they are easy.
Dr. DeSimone is very knowledgeable. She has very clear powerpoints on class content and is very good at explaining the material at hand. The online HW and in class questions also help to boost your grade. Her practice tests are very similar to her real tests and are a great study resources. Would recommend!
She makes chem 101 the easiest as she can. Lectures can be very confusing and somewhat boring. I stopped taking notes in class and really don't listen, but do every practice exam she posts a lot. The real exams are just the practice exams with different numbers. Some people struggled, I did well, just do the homework's and prep for the exams.
She is so kind and helpful. She tells jokes at the beginning of class and takes her time teaching. She doesn't just read off the slides. She is such a fantastic teacher, but I studied A LOT for this class. It is challenging, but if you do the assignments and listen during class, you will be ok.
If you are not confident in your chemistry abilities, do NOT take this class. She has office hours, but when you ask for help, she offers no advice and says, "Just drop my class." Beware of the study guides; they are nothing like the exams. Yes, she offers extra credit, but it will be 80 minutes long, and if you miss a question, it is 0.7 points.
Chemistry is a more difficult class in general, but if you go to class, pay attention, and do assignments, you will be just fine. She gives a study guide and multiple practice exams for each exam that are nearly identical to the actual exams. Very straightforward class and professor, if you're attentive and participating you will be just fine
Chemistry is NOT for the weak... Exam 1 and 4 is all math and Exam 2 and 3 is memorization AND the final is cumulative. I lowkey stopped paying attention in lecture cause she goes so fast but how I maintain an A is reading the textbook and going to Lloyd Tutoring EVERY SINGLE DAY! Those tutors SAVED my grade
bad teacher
Dr. DeSimone is the best Chemistry teacher here on campus! The lectures may be long, but she explains all the material needed for the tests and provides you with practice exams that are similar to the real ones. She also gives Extra Credit! Make sure to read the book and do the practice exams and you'll do well.
Alice is a very nice person and has a caring personality, but her teaching style is difficult to follow. She skips around a lot, making content difficult to memorise. In addition, she would start new topics with 5-10 minutes of class time just to use the full class period. If you do not already have a background in chemistry, I would steer clear.
She made the class very fair. Her lectures were detailed, even if they weren't always easy to follow. She gives lots of different ways to prepare for the test. Overall a fair professor given the difficulty of chem.
I spent upwards of at minimum 20 hours studying for her tests. I spent hours doing her tedious homework. I'd feel extremely confident walking into her tests, and I'd fail. Beware, the test will literally be NOTHING like her “old exam (just like this exam)” I have never worked so hard in my life just to fail over and over. Just take someone else.
Goes very fast over material and can be hard to follow. Very sweet woman but expects you to know what she's talking about and doesn't really go in detail to explain topics. Attendance is mandatory. Tests are fair in my opinion, but chemistry is difficult in general.
DeSimone was an amazing professor. She gave very clear expectations as to what would be on tests and provided old exams as practice exams to use in preparing for the exams. Most of the time the practice exams were almost identical to the actual exams, so as long as you are doing those while also understanding the material, you should be fine.
Professor DeSimone is such a sweet woman, and you can tell she really loves her job. I had her for Chem101, and I ADORE her.
She does a good job covering the material and she posts previous exams for you to study that are pretty similar to the actual tests. Has a knack for explaining things and is good at sensing where students are lost. Do the dynamic study modules/pretest problem sets cuz that extra credit gives you a lot of breathing room come final exam week.
She gives tests that our nothing like the study guide. Have to memorize every little thing for the final that we learned 3 months ago. very monotone and boring professor.
She was a great professor I just don't personally do well with chemistry and so I figured out the best way for me to study to late but I would highly recommend her she's so sweet and a lot of extra credit is given along with practice tests
Ok, definitely not as bad as people make her seem. She reads slides the entire lecture which are all based on the chapter that are supposed to be read before class, you WILL NOT be able to keep up if you don't. I passed with a C but could've definitely got higher with better participation. ALSO DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT! It can make or break you.
Starting off, this rating is simply because the class is difficult without knowing any chemistry. To me the material was hard to understand. Assignments are very long and you have to answer questions in class that are a grade. Overall, Dr. Desimone is a very nice person and decent professor. She explains things well and answers students questions.
Chemistry is a difficult subject, but Dr. Desimone does a good job of explaining concepts. She was very helpful in her office hours and responded promptly to emails. Tests are brutal though, so a lot of studying is necessary. The lowest test grade is dropped, as well, which you will be thankful for.
Dr. DeSimone is a nice person but this class was exceptionally hard and I paid hundreds of dollars in tutoring. The final was disastrous and we were learning new stuff up until the class before the final. We never review. ONE OR TWO QUESTIONS IS NOT REVIEW! Take Shane Street, you'll do better in his class. If you don't have to take chem, don"t.
Overall a good professor. She assigns a lot of homework that can be annoying at times but some is extra credit and good review. She did a good job of covering material and giving plenty of chances to practice. She posted a lot of past exams that were pretty similar to the tests. If you go to class and know how to apply the content, you'll be fine!
Very lecture heavy so if you dont go to the lectures you arent gonna pass the class, that simple. There are alot of extra credit opportunities and all of her homeworks are online which sucks. Tests are difficult.
