shes a little loppy.. but a good prof. she doesnt teach as much as the other profs, which makes you feel like you aren't learning what you need to. ive tried asking her questions after class and she just doesnt understand what im asking and gives unclear answers. read, go to class and discussion, study and you will be fine.
frustratingly confusing, not capable of explaining anything. i am now in organic chemistry, and the first two weeks me and my friends that had mignerey were all behind because she taught us so little compared to the other professors. i would stay away
she is quite possibly the worst lecturer ever. she mumbles a lot and does the examples from the text, so you have nothing to compare to. her tests get easier, but her lectures are almost unbearable. beware.
I have mixed feeling about the class. I thought she was a good professor but she often came in unclear. Discussion wasn't very helpful because there were only 4 students and it often lasted only 15 minutes max. I suggest reading the book and doing her assigned homework if you want to do well on the tests.
This woman one of the worsts profs I've ever had. If someone else is teaching chem271 take them and do yourself a favor. Her tests are poorly worded and the average is about 54. It is impossible to do well because of this. She has clickers and homework all of which don't reflect what her exams are like. Her lectures are boring and confusing
Dr. Mignerey's exams are very difficult which is compounded by the fact that her lectures don't make sense unless you understand the material fully before its covered in class. I studied my ass off more so than in any other chem class, had a 78 average but got the A because everyone does really poorly. I would advise not taking her unless you have
this prof is beyond useless. the only way to get a good grade in her class is to read the text, memorize all the problems assigned and not assigned. she can't lecture and often gives erroneous info in lecture you have to figure out at home yourself. she is rude and insulting when you ask for help. She should be fired!
This class has been terrible for me! The online work took hours to complete, but weren't worth many points. The practice tests weren't always accurate depictions of the actual test. I am doing poorly, and have to drop the course! Do not ignore these reviews. Some people don't mind her, but she didn't work for me. Be cautious when choosing this prof
I dropped her class half way through because I was SO frustrated with her teaching. In lecture all she does is do "example" problems on the board without really going into any explanation as to what the hell she's doing. The book literally taught me everything. The only thing is, her exams weren't anything like the book problems.
she is a very interesting person. i went to her to get help because i had no idea what as happening and she tried to help, but couldnt understand why i didnt understand. i never go to lecture because she sends out her slides the day before anyways. she has sample problems everyday, but they are only one point, so not really necessary. dont take her
Professor Mignerey is a pretty good teacher considering how hard the course is. She reads a lot from her slides and does some problems on the board which help. If you take this class, make sure you go to class and stay on top of the material or else you have no shot. Know the practice exams too.
She is the worst teacher that could possibly be teaching gen chem. She makes math errors in calculations and explains nothing during the lecture. Attend discussion and teach yourself from the book if you want to do well/learn because she will teach you NOTHING. If you have a question, she doesn't give you an answer and gets frustrated with you.
This class was hard and it took a lot of outside work and practice. Her tests are very hard, but doable. Lectures are confusing, ask a lot of questions if you don't understand. If you want an A, don't take her class. Her TA is HORRIBLE! He is disrespectful and not helpful. If you ask a question, expect to have him roll his eyes at you.
She is a terrible teacher who is not clear whatsoever about what she is teaching. 1010 would not recommend taking this course with her. She does use balloons though for one lecture, so there was that.
Very nice woman. She was a little confusing at times, but she wants us all to pass.
She's a very nice woman, but she made multiple mistakes on exams (not balancing equations right, etc.) and made mistakes in class that were very confusing. If you want to learn the concepts, you need to learn from the book because she only teaches the math in class.
Alice mignerey is the worst chemistry teacher i have ever had. her lectures are not clear whatsoever and she make a lot of mathematical errors. i never understood when she teaches and she gives quiz question at the end of every lecture so missing her class actually could affect your grade. exams were very difficult but big curve at the end.
Mignerey is terrible. I worked immensely hard and it was my lowest grade. She fails to explain and makes connections in problems; students can't follow. I went to office hours and sought help multiple times only to receive pure arrogance and no help (she laughed at my poor test grade). Even a TA admitted she teaches as if you already know chem
Lectures are long with Prof. Mignerey. When I had her fall 2015, she would spend half the class talking about chalk or figuring out how to move the chalkboards. She would always ask TAs for affirmation, like shes unsure of what she's saying. She posts the lecture ppts online, which is helpful. Theres a good curve, I got an A from a high C.
Alice has the best intentions, sure, but she makes it obvious that she does not know what she is doing. The class is difficult on its own, but with a professor who is unable to balance chemical equations, doesn't understand orgo, and wastes lecture time with balloon molecules, the class becomes impossible. Huge curve so that some people can pass.
Chemistry does not come naturally to me, so it would've taken a fantastic professor for me to learn, and unfortunately that was not Professor Mignerey. She teaches like her students already know the material, and her tests ask challenging questions that she hadn't previously shown making them hard to prepare for, but she does have a lenient curve.
Mignerey seems to be getting quite a bit of hate on here, but she really wasn't that bad. She would always update us on where the median of the class is and how much she expected to curve (which ended up being around 15%). The tests resembled her practice exams and the homework, and she was funny/entertaining. -1 for the annoying clicker questions
She's a wonderful person, is humorous, and has a passion for chemistry. She's just not the greatest professor/teacher. She's nice enough to put all her lecture slides online, but isn't the best lecturer and those slides aren't that coherent either. She's a tough grader and the test are tough. Do the practice tests! She does your final grade though.
If u want to learn any Chemistry DO NOT take her class. She did not teach any of the material well, always struggled going through problems in class as if it was her first time doing them. When students asked questions she answered in a sarcastic tone making us all feel stupid. Basically have to teach yourself everything (unless you took AP Chem).
Tests are impossible and will get mad at you for doing poorly. Literally just reads of slides during lecture and tests are way harder than study guides/practice problem
Easily the most pathetic professor in the UMD Chemistry Department. Although she is no doubt a smart person, her inability to teach basic chemistry was extremely frustrating. Often times she would make mistakes and she was easily flustered in class. The tests were very difficult and not at all similar to the practice exams given in class.
I hadn't had a chemistry class since the 10th grade, I had pretty much forgotten everything. I did not learn anything from Mignerey, I read the book and taught myself. Reason I went to lecture was because Mignerey has multiple in class quizzes. To study for the exams I just went over her practice exams, but they didn't help much.
CHEM135 is one of the hardest intro classes at UMD, especially if you have little to no background in Chemistry. She goes through PowerPoints and examples in class (albeit quickly) which I found helpful and she is eager to answer questions you have. Nevertheless, studying is a must and I highly recommend her office hours, especially before a test.
Mignerey makes CHEM135 much harder than it should be. She moves at an incredibly fast past and I find myself behind no matter how hard I try to keep up. She is often flustered during class, does not understand questions asked by students, her writing on the board is not clear, and she does not explain topics at the level of detail needed.
She seems very smart but she made lots of mistakes in class and seemed to jump between different topics and chapters at random. It was super difficult figuring out what was going on in class and she didn't really seem to know how to use the grading system, so our grades appeared far higher than they actually were until near the end of the semester.
Prof Mignerey definitely means well but she lacks the ability to hold an organized lecture and communicate complex ideas. She also teaches the class as if youve already taken AP/IB Chem. On top of that, practice exams are 20x harder than the real ones. Fortunately, theres a huge curve.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken since I've never taken chem. The class average ended up being 64% before the curve, however, she curves the average up to a B and will pass you (C) if you have above 50 %. This class covers a ton of material (18 chapters) and has very long homework, so be prepared to work a lot if you want a good grade.
Lectures are mandatory due to in class quizzes based on previous problems done in lecture. As a lecturer, she is one of the worst I have seen. She was nice, but lacked the respect of the students. Practice tests are very valuable, and similar to the real tests, only reason I did well in the class . Textbook is valuable for explanations
Very hard professor. Bad lecturer, makes many mistakes while teaching. Goes through material quickly without giving explanations. Teaches from Power Point. Gives quiz almost every class. Doesn't help build strong foundation of chemistry, will be difficult without at least basic understanding of chemistry. You'll have to teach yourself most material
Possibly the worst teacher I ever had. Doesn't explain anything and makes SO many mistakes. Quizzes basically every class. I basically taught myself the whole course and still am struggling to pass. I would rather have to take chem for an extra semester than ever take her again. Did I mention TO NOT TAKE HER?
Mignerey is a nice person, but horrible professor. She is one of those that knows a lot about the subject but just doesn't know anything about teaching. I basically had to teach myself in this course. The practice exams were helpful. The only good thing about this class was that there was a huge curve.
sucks. just dropped.
Lectures are very hard to follow and not explained well. Reading the textbook helps, as does discussion. She does post practice exams before tests, which are helpful, but a lot of what is discussed in class is not on the test at all.
Professor Mignerey seems like a nice person and I'm sure she means well. But her lectures are just all over the place and don't make any sense. She is the worst lecturers I've had throughout all of college. One of the only good things about her class is that she allows for a double-sided cheat sheet for exams. The average for the 1st exam was 64%
Lectures are ok, but a lot of questions are unclear. Test heavy, you don't get enough time to do it. You do get to learn a lot from this class if paying enough work.
Not too difficult. There are quizzes during lecture, so show up! Lots of resources before exams including practice tests, sample problems, and flexible office hours. The textbook is available online, so you don't need to buy a hard copy. The last midterm is harder than the final, so prepare for that.
She truly cares about her students. Online textbook for use so you don't have to buy one, 50 points given for simply asking a question on a website/ answering two. Does give mini quizzes in class (when we had class). If you email her with any concerns, she responds and tests are basically the practice exam.
With online school, she just doesn't know how to teach. She's nice but not the greatest teacher. Goes over a broad sense of the material, but isn't good at helping you understand it. HW on Tophat & Chem101 are tedious + long. Tests on Chem101 are just not great, it doesn't match up to what we learn in class. She's not terrible but not great either
Very rude responding to Emails. Very unclear on significant figures as its different for her class, Tophat and Chem132. While other professor gave points back in the third midterm for questions that were unfair, she refused.
Be prepared to put in the work. There is a lot of reading and homework required, but I feel like it prepares you for the exams. Chemistry is a tough concept in general, so make sure to truly understand the concept.
Many people don't like her, but I had a good experience with her. If you don't have background chem knowledge, her teaching style probably won't be helpful. If you have taken AP chem, you most likely will be fine. You have to work hard, but you can do well. DO EXTRA PRACTICE PROBELMS.
While Dr. mignerey seems sweet, her teaching is not ideal. The exams are extremely difficult, and I only did pretty well on them because my HS ap chem teacher was great and I have tons of specific notes from that. My background HS knowledge carried me through this course. Its also annoying how much money we have to pay for required online hw.
If I was forced to choose between taking Mignerey's class again or taking a bullet to the brain, I would take a bullet. Awful lecturer, doesn't put grades in until the very end of the semester, technologically challenged, should be fired.
Too old to still be teaching with online classes. Our average for our last exam was a 56, half of the material on the exam was never discussed in class. The other professor gave points back to students because he realized the test was unfair and Mignerey refused simply because she was feeling petty. So not worth it. Literally take any other teacher
Mignerey is a sweet lady, but her teaching is not. She isn't good at lecturing especially over zoom. The HW on TopHat + Chem101 are long & tedious. Quizzes/ graded questions during lecture. Tests are hard, people usually avg
She can be very accommodating to the needs of specific students and the class as a whole, but can get upset about things at times. There is a ton of homework and the material is very challenging. A lot of lecture time is lost due to technical difficulties and exams are hard.
Dr. Mignerey was nice & went over examples that were going to be on the test during class. I was in the asynchronous section, so I taught myself most of the concepts on Tophat, but this was my own choice. The practice through homework & practice exams was helpful. We actually used the materials we bought so we didn't waste our money
Personally she seemed better than the other teachers because she seems more organized and the lectures were helpful, ESPECIALLY chem101. However, exam 3 was unfair and she reacted in a very petty manner, unlike the other professor who gave back points. A LOT OF HW QUESTIONS.
The TopHat (textbook) readings are worthless. Dont bother reading just do the in-text problems and move on. Dr. M is terrible with technology and a bit sassy with students, but shes very pure. I personally liked her style because it gave me freedom to learn on my own, but the class was harder than it shouldve been. Dont take if bad at chemistry
Mignerey really did not adjust well to online school. Her lectures were all over the place, and each lecture we spent 20 minutes dealing with some technical difficulty. However, her exams are really straightforward, 90% similar to the homeworks. The final was also really similar to the midterms. The last midterm is harder than the final.
30 minutes of every hour long lecture is devoted to technical difficulties. You'd think after a year of using zoom she'd have figured it out by now; nope. She is not good at explaining things clearly, and if you ask a question she will laugh at you and act like you're an idiot and not even answer the question.
do not take chem with her. she explains nothing in lectures and goes so fast. she expects you to know everything without being taught the material. DO NOT take this class if you don't understand calculus. It is ALL calculus work. Probably the hardest class I've ever taken.
She was extremely unorganized. She wasted time each class simply trying to use her technology. She never answered any questions directly. Would not recommend if you're genuinely trying to learn the material.
Doesnt know how to explain or answer questions. Only shows calculations examples the whole class, with no topic or concept talk/explanation. you're lucky if you get any partial credit if you get an answer incorrect. TAs associated with the class arent a help either.
never take any of her classes. she looks down upon students and will not explain any of the topics covered in class. exams are on material we hardly go over, and she never cares about her students and how she makes them struggle. way too much homework is assigned (abt 100 questions a week). worst prof ive had and the ta's arent helpful either.
I hate her. Worst teacher ever. Cannot do a single thing right when it comes to technology and all her grades are put in at the last minute. All homework is worthless; try reading the TopHat and maybe something will click but she is literally the worst lecturer I've ever seen. She gets her own practice problems wrong. Take literally any other prof.
Awful professor that talks at you instead of teaching you. She'll go over problems in lecture but she stands so close to the board that you cannot follow her work until she steps aside. She'll ask if you have questions but literally laughs in your face when you ask. The only good thing is that her practice exams are very similar to the real exams.
Professor Mignerey is tough. It is very hard to follow what she is saying when she teaches. She writes her work on the board, but it is all over the place and she skips explanations as if we are just supposed to know what she is doing. If you ask her a question, she gets annoyed you don't understand. There are also quizzes every single lecture day.
Dont recommend, save yourself and pick a different professor!
The class is hard to keep up with. She doesnt go through all steps to solving problems. The class feels extremely rushed with very few grades and an outrageous amount of exams. Would not recommend.
Worst professor Ive ever has. She forgets that shes supposed to teach us, as we do not have a PH.D in chemistry. Extremely unfair, would not recommend.
People give her a bad rep because chemistry as a topic is hard to learn quickly. She may not be the best at explaining things, but she shouldn't need to if people are ahead on the reading. If you read ahead and do the homework well or at least try, you'll be fine. I can't emphasize this more, STUDY FROM THE CHEM101, the exams are made from it.
Professor Mignerey is a terrible teacher. She has a tendency to simply put things on the board without any proper explanation as to the steps or the logic behind the problem. Additionally, she is very rude. She has no respect for students, your answer could be correct, but off by a decimal, and the complete answer will be marked wrong.
Honestly, Professor Mignerey is mean. Countless people would ask questions in class and she would laugh at them or give an extremely condescending response. The class has so few grades so it makes it very difficult to get an A and the final seemed way harder than any of the problems we did before. Don't take her
If you test with ADS, I recommend you don't take her class. She grades ADS tests last so I got mine back days after the rest of lecture and was unable to view my final since it was not ready at the same time as non-ADS tests. Overall not an awful lecturer, but incredibly rude and uncaring. I had to study for 10 hours each exam to get an A-.
Dr. Mignerey is very smart but she often skips steps, goes too fast, and covers too much content, making lectures very confusing. We had 4 midterms, a final, daily pop quizzes, and an absurd amount of homework (hours every day). Her tests are difficult and each one averaged a C or D. She does offer a generous curve at the end though.
Professor Mignerey accused me of being a liar when I asked her about inconsistent grading on her test, when a classmate received credit for the same work that I did, when I had not. She is rarely available, pretty rude, and practice assignments do not correlate with the tests provided. Rely on Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube for learning this.
She is terrible at explaining the actual concept she's teaching. During her lectures, all she does is example problems. That is how she teaches and you will be expected to understand every step she is doing. One good thing about her is that she pushes due dates back for homework if you email her ahead of time. Get ready for stress if you take her.
DO NOT TAKE W/ MIGNEREY. IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. MIGNEREY is very rude and highly unapproachable. During lectures, if you ask a question she gets an attitude and responds with im not gonna ask you that. Exams are mostly mathematics.
THE WORST PROFESSOR."Teaches" high level physics rather than general chem. Teaches is in quotes bc she really just does practice problems and expects you to understand. Then if you ask her a question, she is super rude and condescending and will laugh at you. Save your time, pick a diff professor.
The saving grace for this class (Radiochem) is that the topic is her specialty so she was comfortable sharing her life's work. There were a few homeworks that she would take weeks to grade. However, ALL exams (including the final) were take home and not timed. She even bumped students grades after all was entered. Can't use a pc to save her life.
I would say avoid this prof at all cost (especially if you're that great at chem). The class itself is pretty difficult and the class average in the class is extremely low. The only reason why I would recommend her is because of the gracious curve at the end of the semester which for me was roughly 30%. The TA, Sam, is amazing tho.
They give you online hw (~ $30-80 dollars) and every week you get 144 questions and more if you get them wrong . It takes me a WHOLE DAY ( 7am to 7pm) to finish. Don't go to lectures she doesn't teach use YT and have gpt 4 explain the slides. I could've saved 240 hours (Literally 12*16weeks =192 + (1 hour to dissect each lecture *3) *16=48 )
She doesn't even know what she is doing.
Professor Mignerey's lectures rarely *explain* new concepts when they are introduced, so if you want to really understand anything, your best bet is to teach it to yourself before lecture. Test averages were consistently low, and the tests were usually harder than the review material. Don't take this professor if you can help it.
Just a heads up for those taking CHEM135. Take Griffith or wait till another semester. Never take this woman at all COST. She is the worst UMD chem professor I ever had. Took Griffith after her and pass calmly since she relates it to engineering. Mignerey is just doing hardcore general chemistry with extra unnecessary work.
She could barely read off the slides. The discussions were useless. The test prep was useless. The class got curved at 45% to pass because she is such a bad teacher. Genuinely such a terrible experience in her class. There are little to no resources available. Go for Griffith, I haven't heard one complaint about her.
This woman is easily the worst professor on campus and don't know why she isn't yet fired. Her lectures make 0 sense because she does examples & more than half the time makes mistakes in them too. She spends atleast 20 mins of the class trying to figure out how to use the technology. Her exams are poorly worded and homeworks take 15+ hours.
very bad lectures miserable homework if you take this class be prepared to learn all of the material on your own time
she is terrible. her writing is incoherent she expects you to already know chemistry and when you go to write down the important information she changes the slides on accident because she doesn't know how to use her iPad. don't take her unless you have no other option.
She's not a mean or bad person, just a horrible teacher. She covers roughly 30 to 40 pages of textbook content in a singe 50 minute class, and explains things in the most confusing way possible. Every single person I know who took this class spent upwards of 3 hours a day just studying the textbook to make up for her horrible teaching.
I made the mistake of thinking, “all of these people giving reviews are over exaggerating”. It's worse than words can explain. By the third lecture I was completely lost. Don't make my mistake. Please
i have no words
do NOT bother going to lecture if you have her. You will be teaching yourself the course anyway
