Not a helpful prof for students. Set in her ways and does not like to hear any opinion but her own. Her material is outdated and boring. She changes her expectations constantly for assignments and no one really knows what she wants. Horrible!

This women is the most annoying person in the world. She will talk about something, and the go off on another and then come back to the first. SHe is the hardest person to follow. She never talks about half the reading and still test us on all of it.THis lady if awful

wow, where do i start. This prof is absolutly the worst prof in the whole university. she is never organized, she forgets that she has classes, is late, but emphasises punctuality for her students. knows nothing about "women and the criminal justice system," and expects the students to teach her!
Very rude, and quite b*tchy. The world's stupidist prof! she complains that we do not have enough time to go over all course material, but insists on showing movies from her "personal collection" that if missed for some valid reason are unacessable. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

she sucked as a prof was really ****y kicked ppl out of class because they were sucking on lollipops we always watched movies. Her tests were easy though!!!
She doesn't teach, she gets the class to do it or we watch oprah. she doesn't care about anyone, she contradicts herself, and if you have to do a presentation in her class get ready for her to make you want to cry. but she marks soooo easy. given the chance, i'd take her class again just to get my A.

horrible prof, goes off topic, shows too mnay videos then flys thru lectures coz theres no time remaining. makes ppl sit on stairs if they come late, kicks ppl out of class, not helpful. if neone has to take this course take soci 2410 instead since its cross listed to 1010 and u will save urself form her.

The readings for this course are fantastic and I've learned so much from them. NOT from the prof, who is senile and really needs to retire. She is rude and plays favourites, and is rude (worth repeating). The course rocks, but if you get on her bad side (and who knows how she chooses) then you're screwed no matter what you do.
an amazing professor.When i first saw the ratings they scared me but I'm SO HAPPY I stayed her class.The topics are really interesting and she is a very intelligent proffessor.I would recommend for those of you who need a 4000 level credit then to take it with her.Yes, there is a heavy workload but you know what its worth it bc it helps with exams

She is difficult to predict - one second she'll be laughing, the next second she'll be screaming (at a class of 4th year students!?) She repeatedly tried to change the expectations of the class AFTER the Senate mandated period for change. She attempted to fail multiple people because she "never received" assignments that I SAW them turn in.
Being the only guy in a class of 25-30 girls was difficult since I generally felt out of place. Fortunately, Professor Propper facilitated the class so integration and discussion among students made class interesting. With this in mind, I think Prof Propper's teaching style is more based on facilitating than lecturing. While this (continued)..
While this teaching style isnt for everyone, it does generate self-learning which is crucial at the undergrad level. Although she may be rough around the edges, in that shes quite strict with her class, prof Propper is extremely concise in expressing the material. Furthermore, shes a fair marker and rightly rewards hard working students.

Ok well where shall i begin!shes f*kin crazy!! and useless, she does nothing all year long.everything you learn is through other peoples presentations! you have to do long Appendix questions weekly which dont get marked and then she makes u study off your appendix answers which may very likely be wrong!I warn you!save yourselves & dont go thru w/it
Prof is OK! She trails off a lot during lecture and can become quite boring especially when she shows movies that are more then 20 years old. Be sure to hide yourself when your talking to the person beside you cause she will call you out in lecture. Abbe is a great TA!, really kind and very fair marker.
ITS EASY!!! Reading the book and making your own notes will save your life for tests! Attend lecture because she might ask questions about her lectures in the exams. She trails off sometimes and talks about her experience on the bus, but hey! that's what sociology is about, interaction and society..sooo..yeah!
easy, easy, easy, mostly textbook. multiple choice tests. i'm not sure how 'worldly' she is for a socio prof...she can also be rude. but i liked the textbook. my ta seemed like she knew more about socio (amy). it's a bird course, just take it.

First of all, its pointless to even go to her lectures - just read the textbook. All her tests are incredibly easy and consist solely of key terms from the text that are easy to remember. She really hammers home the women's rights stuff to the point where she's completely biased. Lucky I had an interesting TA.
She isn't the most interesting professor and she can be quite uppity. She does not like to be challenged or questioned either. She yelled at me once in her office. There were 4 tests, 2 essays, and mandatory tutorial attendance and participation. All pretty easy. Don't let her scare you away from an otherwise wonderful subject!

The content of this course is very inetersting although Propper is not a helpful Professor at all! The course is taught by endless presentations and she does not explain mandatory course material. Propper is not pleasant nor does she encourage good classroom discussion. The worst prof I had in my undergrad!
She is terribly biased but refuses to admit so. Much of her knowledge is outdated and if recent information is brought to her attention, instead of being appreciative, she will sh*tlist you for the rest of the year. Any other professor would round a final grade of 79.83 to an A. Not her. RUN.

Awful prof! She makes you do long and laborious "homework sheets" on readings that aren't even marked, but must be done to her exact standards. Her knowledge is outdated, she doesn't like to be proven wrong, she blabs on about irrelevant topics, is technologically challenged,is not helpful, and just a plain BORE. This woman needs to STOP TEACHING!

Not interesting at all. I had her for first year undergrad intro. to SOCI and I fell asleep in numerous classes because she was boring and talked about irrelevant things. The textbook itself wasn't so bad to read though. But she marks in a really picky way too. She cares about the pointless, insignificant details...
The class I took with her was Women and the Criminal Justice System. She is the worst Professor I have ever had. She sets you up to fail from the start. Takes off marks if you go to the bathroom while she is speaking. Further she is not helpful, treats students poorly. Such a shame because the topic would be so interesting if someone else taught it

When I got there, she berated me about not contacting her myself! I tried to explain the obvious but her verbal assault continued until I was in tears.
She treats you as if you were in high school. She tried to separate 2 people because they were too loud and she makes you feel horrible for asking for help. She is full of herself and we are required to address her as Dr. Propper. She always talks about herself and focus little on the course material. She is also extremely biased and arrogant.
Horrible prof. She is concerned with herself. She speaks about irrelevant things. She acts like we are students in high school. She will call you out and kick you out is you talk or use technology. Her lectures are pointless. Just read the textbook and forget coming to listen to her blab about her accomplishments.
She related the course content with current topics in the news, which I always found interesting. Lots of videos to accompany her lectures. Tests were straightforward M/C, and very easy if you do your readings. She will call you out/remove you if you're disruptive during lecture, which I think she gets bad rep for. Overall great prof.
Took 1010 with her in 2010 & I'm not shocked that she's still getting bad reviews. She's ridiculous. Treats you like you're in high school, will call you out if you're talking & insists that you refer to her as DR. Propper. I stopped going to class because she didnt teach.I read the textbook cover to cover. I dont even know how she still teaches.
Talk down to everyone. Lectures are pointless because presentation assignment covers everything she does anyways, though on tests she asks specific question on how she feels or how the textbook feels even if the info is outdated. Worst prof I've ever had
Worst prof I ever had. She spend all lecture showing videos to avoid actually lecturing. She posts no info on moodle, which makes no difference because there is no pont going to her lecture. Her feminist perspective ruined socio for me. She is rude and likes to be called "Dr" despite her grammatical errors and technological incompetence.
I think Alice Propper was a great prof. Her tests were easy if you studied so all in all a good experience. Too many people giving her a hard time here
The class is very interesting but this Professor is one of the worst Profs I have ever had in my entire life. Throughout my 4 years at York I have never had any terrible experiences but she definitely gets the award for worst prof ever. Also, don't bother complaining to the Dean or anyone, they won't care because she's been teaching for so long.
All the comments below are accurate descriptions of how she teaches. If an ENTIRE class can agree that she is not a good professor, then she is definitely the problem, not the students. She could care less about your opinions, it's all about her. Will spend more time talking about her life then actually teaching course content.
Although the course is an interesting one, Alice is the worst professor. it is her opinion or no opinion at all. she will call you out in front of the whole class and make you feel dumb for saying something she does not agree with, even when it is right. A lot of assignments that do not count for marks. She is a fair marker, but its not worth it.

RUN WHILE YOU CAN!!! Ok so I passed with an a BUT I kid you not, I only did that because I wasn't afraid to brown nose. Her test arebstupid and make no sense. Her questions are from random details from the readings she never paid attention to. She can be very offense and cold as she grew up in a different time and lacks compassion for students.
She is the most disrespectful and condescending person I've ever had the misfortune of meeting. AVOID HER. She doesn't allow for discussion, doesn't actually teach anything, and expects everyone to have the same opinion of her. I regret taking any course with her.
I' not writing this to be disrespectful, but to help future students. Started the class with nothing but respect towards her, considering I was excited to take the course. Almost immediately I regretted taking the course. She disrespects her students, treats students as if they are not educated, and only refers to online news articles for "sources"
I wouldn't take this class again. The class was unorganized and unpredictable. TA changed / determined the weight of assignments after they had been handed in. Class ran from Sept - April but the final syllabus wasn't posted until the end of January.

I honestly dont get why her rating is so low. Shes an ok prof. Not like AMAZING but like not bad. The TA's in the class are very nice tho. The prof isnt disrespectful and I have never seen her be disrespectful to someone. Her organization of the course is a litttle tricky tho, sometimes its hard to find out whats being assessed.
I took this class as a filler, honestly just needed an easy course to maintain a certain GPA. Easy A+ HOWEVER, this is by far the worst prof I've ever had. Quite honestly the most disrespectful person I've ever met. No ones gonna fire her so don't take the class, and if you do - attendance not mandatory by ANY means.
in all my years of studying - I have never met a professor so vile. She makes an enjoyable class a living hell. By week 3, eight students dropped the course for no reason other than Alice Propper. It is ironic that this is her last name when she is anything but "proper". she treats uni students like preschool kids. DO NOT TAKE HER AT ANY COST!!!!
Prof Propper's class is a mixed bag. The coursework can be tricky to navigate, but the TAs are quite helpful. I found using unstuck AI alongside the textbook really helped me stay on top of things. Not the easiest class, but doable with some effort.
