dont like
Good teacher but hard to understand. She really cares about how her students do. I don't really recommend her
shes kinda hard to understand but gives in all the time and you dont have to do the homework
shes really nice and helpful, but doesnt explain all that well. she loves telling jokes...even though theyr not really funny. if u need help, shel take time out to explain it later. (usually explanation doesnt help though)
Jokes suck. I didn't learn a thing. I maintained a B because i had calc last year. Get one of the other calc teachers.
Tells lots of corny jokes, lets you out early sometimes, and is flexible. A very nice lady and can be confusing sometimes, but all in all, it's not a bad class. Do the homework, pay attention in class, take notes, and you should be fine.

This class is cake, just be sure you go, becuse she takes attendence, shes a great teacher, her jokes always went over my head, but were funny, shes a great lady, loved her class, made math fun!
Awesome crazy Chinese lady that tells a lotta jokes. Most of which make no sense but still a real good teacher.
GREAT teacher! Really cares about her students and is willing to take as much time as it takes to help them understand. I most definitely her! Math is EASY, Math is FUN, I LOVE Math, and I LOVE my Math teacher too!!
She is funny, but sometimes she gets off track, and in this class that's not good because then she doesn't have time to explain things well enough. She gives extra points for the stupidist things, so if you need all the points you can get, you'll be ok!
does problems on the board and expects you to understand how she does them.
pretty good teacher. gets caught up in her stories. If u pay attention in class, most of your homework is done on the board. Grades kind of easy. Tests are hardest part. lets u out early and is very laid back
She is a helpfull teacher however she does not speak English very well so it is kind of hard to understand her. over all she is great teacher and she tells lots of funny stories that make the class time pass quickly. Pay attention to board work because most of the homework is done durring class
LOVE HER! she'll teach you step by step. If you cant follow ..then you can go to her whenever your free and she will help! Sweetest teacher ever. She really cares for her students!
Really good teacher. if you are having trouble make sure you go to her office. She cares about you a lot if you take the time to care about the class.
Very easy, laid back, very helpful
very hard to understand. I got a D in the class and was impressed that I didnt fail. Always late to class and spends too much time making dumb jokes. I suggest you get tutoring if you have her.
VERY HARD! homework is never ending, spend hours studying for tests that were impossible. one good thing is that she gives extra credit and take home quizzes once in a while. i did well but calc was my life the whole semester..dont expect to work on other subjects..get a tutor
Needs to take speech classes; if you need a teacher to really help you in math dont take her. You will have to learn everything by yourself with the book, she doesnt even help in the extra help sessions.
I got a C+ in her class, I was pleased! What a classs I tell you...homework was never-ending but it did help for the tests and quizzes. She teaches alright but I got extra help from someone else and I didnt really mind the class at all.
shes not great a teaching you how to do math. i learned almost everything on my own. her class always got atleast 10% lower on the exams than alikhani or ansari. she takes attendance too so thats kinda a bummer.
Recent she started giving worksheets to help you remeber what formulas you need. Forget the main class, go to her extra study sessions for help. If you cant make the classes, then form a study group cause that will help you make it. Nice woman, good tutor, not so good teacher.
If you are looking for an easy grade, she is not the one, but I am not sure if math ever will be an easy grade. She is really willing to help you, and while her homeworks are a lot of work, they help you to learn the material. IMO their is no better way to learn.
I managed an A in the class, put a lot of hours into homework and projects. The classwork is very time consuming. Prof. Shaparenko is very nice and wants her students to suceed even though the class is very hard.
The best math professor at Berks, esp compared to Ansari. She has office hours 4 days a week and will explain/help with a problem until she can't explain any further. Always willing to set aside time for individual help and will always go out of her way for a student. Def choose Shaparenko over Ansari; anyone would agree...
Does what ever she can to help you learn and do well in her class, as long as you give her a chance too. (Go to office hours!)
Great professor. Will answer any quesiton you have, and tries to keep the class light w/ her jokes and stories. Hard material, but if you need help she is very glad to do so. I pratically lived in her office for office hours.
Very good teacher, trys to help as much as she can. If you struggle early go to her office hours (she'll give you candy). Good teacher overall.
Mrs Shaparenko is the best math teacher I have ever had. Sure, the material is difficult and almost impossible to understand on your own, but she explains it so well. Go to her office hours as soon as you don't understand something... she will be more than willing to help. Nicest lady ever.
best teacher ever for Math. She's extremely caring and really works at helping her students=)She'll always have candy and food and she'll take you hiking*
SHE IS SOOoo CARING AND SWEET! SHE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER AND U SHOULD TAKE HER AND ANY MATH LEVEL CUZ SHES THE BEST ! TRUST!!!
The most accomadating and helpful teacher at berks. Will have no problem with meeting with you at times other than her office hours. If you have to take a hard math class, take it with her becuase she will work with you to the max until you understand the material... Far superior to Ansari (worst teacher at berks)
She is helpful if you ask her. Quizzes and tests can be pretty hard so make sure you know your stuff. Show up to friday classes, you'll get bonus points. The key thing in her class is to just STUDY...and you'll be fine. (Also...she has an accent and is often difficult to understand...and tells pretty lame jokes. Laugh at them, and she'll like you.
Great professor with a heavyish accent. If you pay attention you can understand her and she makes a point of getting students involved so they learn. If you show up fridays she gives you EC. She drops 2 lowest quizzes. Laugh at her jokes that may sometime be corny. She also gives the students free food (pizza, gum, candy, chocolate, etc)
She is the worst professor ever!!! her test and quizzes are hard as hell, you cant understand her and her reviews are no help. Dont have her if you can help it
This class is very difficult. I had to go to the tutor for almost every assignment. Shaparenko is a good professor in that she'll help you any way she can but the material is still difficult. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
The material is hard alone, but when you add in her accent, her inability to teach, and her random unrelated stories in the middle of a lesson it makes it so much harder. I have to take the class again, if you are not good at math don't take this class because you will just become worse.

she was so sweet and i feel bad because i never went to class. she helped me when i needed when i shouldnt have been given it. at the end of the year when i need points to get a C she just gave them to me. you need to take her if you know calculus a little bit, but you need to work sort of hard to get a good grade in this class.
really sweet lady, def cares about her students, takes a really hard and boring class and puts some life into it on fridays she normally brings in chocolate
Very willing to go out of her way to help any student.
Horrible prof. Gets off topic constantly throughout class. Does not teach at all, does problems and fails to explain how to do it. Speaks very quietly, impossible to hear in the back of the room, or over any ambient noise. Grades unfairly and will not offer any explanation for why it was wrong, it just is. Avoid this mess of a professor altogether
save your self the trouble and avoid taking this professor at all costs. she will kill any desire you have to learn math or even bother at a higher education. this professor is what's wrong with the education system. if a prof. sucks at their job they should be fired like any other person with a real job instead of being protected by tenure
do your homework. calc is just hard, if you don't practice you won't be good at it. the people who rate her badly just aren't ready to take a real math class yet. she is an average college calc professor. She will help you out if she is in her office, and will always give you free food for coming. she brings humor into the class in random ways
Ms. Shaparenko is one of those teachers that you love and hate at the same time. As far as her teaching goes, it's nothing spectacular. A couple very good things about her is that she is pretty much the nicest teacher you will find at Berks. You can't get any nicer! Oh, and I should add that she does MASSIVE curving. She curved 18% on Exam#2!
No. No no no no. It's very difficult to understand her. She's a nice lady, but as a professor she's pretty terrible. I taught myself Calculus from the textbook. She once marked a problem wrong when I did it the way it was done in the book, and when I brought it to her attention she said 'Well, the textbook is not grading you.'
Dropped it. Shes SUPER nice, but is CRAZY on grading. Minuq 20 points on quizzes/exams because i forgot brackets. homework is SO SO long, so dont wait till last minute, but it IS helpful so DO it. She taught the material, i understood it, but come test time her exams were very confusing/tricky. Overall, Ok. Alikhani 1st choice tho. NOT ANSARI
Great professor. Just do your homework (and actually do it, don't copy out of solutions manual), and you'll be fine. I hated Calculus, but still got an A. She's really nice and is willing to help out, but you have to seek help first. Just don't forget your brackets!
She is a nice person to know, but she is not nice to you when it comes to your GPA. She will jump from point to point without telling anyone how she got their and then she will randomly talk about her kids or stories from the past.
She is an awesome teacher who, if you seem interested in math and care about your grades loves you. I made her my adviser because I like her so much. I recommend taking her over an other Calc prof
Prof. Shaparenko is a very good teacher. Before i took her class i heard she was a bad teacher, but this is quite the opposite. She takes time during class explaining concepts, doing examples, and having students do examples in class. The homework and inclass work ARE FOR YOUR BENEFIT, DO THEM!!!! She is always ready to help, go to her office hours
She assumes the whole class is review for everyone. Granted the first few sections were review. She throws examples at us without fully explaining her methods. Then the course compass homework is way more advanced then what we "covered" in class. If the stuff is review for you awesome, otherwise...
She was our replacement Prof. after our normal teacher shattered her knee. She was extremely helpful and worked with you if you struggled. But you HAD to ask her for help and really emphasize you were in trouble. It's an easy class to fail if you don't try your hardest, but she made it ok. She even throws in some cute jokes.
I really loved her as a teacher. She's funny and nice and really tries to help you out inside and outside of class. She gives an abundance of extra credit and if you actually spend time practicing Calculus you will do very well. It's like learning a new language, you have to put in a lot of practice time before you become fluent.
Great teacher.
She's nice but she goes way too fast.
She goes super fast, expects you to have MATH 22 mastered and or to take this class two times. She is hard to understand and assigns a lot of homework on course compass, which has pointless and doesn't help
really good teacher. she goes fast but if you come to every class and do the homework you will definitely be fine
Terrible
She's not that bad, pay attention and DO THE HOMEWORK and you'll be fine. Test questions will be very familiar if you attend class and do the homework. Don't know why people say she's hard to understand, she really isn't. If you don't put in an effort, you won't get a good grade; but this applies to many classes.
She is an absolute horrible teacher, she is the worst teacher/professor I have ever had. She didn't even curve our final that gave half of the students a 20-30%!!!! she is horrible. DO NOT LIKE HER
She is an amazing teacher, I took her for the fall semester of 2013 and she totally turned around calculus for me. She really helped me out and never once refused a question. she refuses to let your office without understanding the material. Just like any course you have to put in the effort.
Knows a lot about math, doesn't know jack about teaching. Style of instruction did not change one bit from the first week of super-fast reviewing, right on through brand new stuff I've never seen. Standing in front of a class, blazing through one example of an entirely new technique or concept and handing out a quiz is not teaching.
Had her for math 140 and got an A. That is not the case this semester. She goes really fast and granted all the snow days we had did not help. She does not grade fairly at all. She gave me a very little partial credit and I studied for 4 days for this test. Avoid this class if possible take it over the summer
If you just pay attention in class and do the assignments the class is pretty easy. She'll explain things in great detail if you don't understand them and does the same problem multiple times until it is understood. Make sure you understand her quizzes and homework and you should get an A or B.
Technically class isn't mandatory, but she gives a quiz out each time worth approximately 10 points. So it's more of a forced attendance. She's a nice person, but I can't seem to learn from her; she talks fairly quickly and seems to go off on random stories and that makes me lose my train of thought.
Prof. Shaparenko save calculus for me. I failed it once before I took her class, homework not worth much but be sure to do it. Her office hours are very helpful and she will put in as much effort to help you as you do to help yourself. her lectures can be a bit boring but the way she teaches is clean and direct. she has a slight accent but not bad.
Difficult professor. I'm sure she's a good person, and she seems very friendly, but she is impossible to follow. Her accent makes things a bit tricky, and when coupled with how fast she RACES through the material it is hard to learn in class. Have to put in a lot of time outside the classroom to pass.
Her class is pretty easy. I loved it! As long as you do the class assignments, her tests should be easy. She is also willing to slow down if asked to and is willing to help with any problems whether it's from lectures or homework.
She's not a tough grader, per se. She is just very particular about how you write your answers and how you structure your work for problems. She gives you in-class Assignments that are normally pretty easy and help your grade if you do them correctly. Her accent takes a bit to get used to but overall she's a very good teacher.
She is such a nice lady! You get used to her accent so don't worry. On tests, she has a specific layout she likes for her work. If you just copy down exactly how she writes her notes and study the layout of the work you'll pass! She also gives us 10 point open note end class assignments almost at the end of every class, great way to bump up grade!
Easy class. Best professor for calculus. Who else gives group quizzes at the college level??? Thought so!
Good teacher all around, probably the best teacher for Math 140 at the moment. You're going to need to study and try a little in this class, but Shaprenko makes it pretty easy compared to the other professors and you learn all that's necessary for Math 141
If you have any questions she will help, but it is hard to understand her at times because of her accent. She tells the same stories/jokes a lot. Toughest grader I've ever encountered. She will take off points for correct answers if it isn't the way she taught you.
Best Math teacher I've ever had. Explains every step and makes sure you know where every step comes, even if she has to go back to explaining basic algebra rules. She's never looked down at me when I required such explanations. Will take off points if your Math WORK is not correct. Math is practically a language- she wants you to be right! :D
She is extremely nice and the best math professor I have had. She is a very thought grader. You can have a correct answer but it notation is not completely correct get ready to lose big points. Her office hours are helpful. She will answer any and all questions and slow down if asked. You need to study and work hard or you will not pass.
Shaparenko was the first prof to help me understand calc thoroughly. She is very picky about notation and how you write out your problems, but it helps you a lot in the long run. I think shes a great professor and if you can take her for calc, definitely do it
I took MATH 140 this semester, and the best thing I love it that, there would be no surprise in the exam. Everything you see in the exam is given as in lecture example. Actually, homework are even a little bit harder than exam, if you can handle the homework, you can definitely get a high score in exam. Also, there are extra credits you can earn!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR FOR CALCULUS!!!! I was struggling in her class and if there was a time we could meet so we could go over some sample problems because I was having a hard time starting and finishing the homework and in-class assignments. She told me to "read the book and it should be self-explanatory" and walked away.
Such an easy class. 10 extra credit points on each test (basically a letter grade) 10 point curve on the homework (again, basically a letter grade) and lowest 5 class assignments dropped. Absolutely no surprised on the test.
She is not involved at all, she finds videos from other people on YouTube tosses it in a module and calls it a day. Also there is NO partial credit. That is ridiculous for any math class let alone calc with some derivatives going two pages.
Super tough grader. Watch out for the smallest things. Do it exactly how she does it. Otherwise, even if you got the answers right, shes gonna take credits off.
You have to copy everything word for word so that when you do class assignments and tests, you don't get points off for not having your limit signs inline or not having a +infinity instead of just infinity. Tough grader, does curve tests however. Will be happy with a B in the class.
Professor Shaparenko was so far the best math teacher I have ever had. She was very supportive of all her students and would go slow so that everyone understands the material. She used in class examples on the board for good experience. Homework for every section, tests were about average. She is always willing to help outside of class, great!!
SHe will nitpick your test if you don't follow her exact notation. Be ready to have most of your answers right on your test but still get a bad grade.
Toughest grader ever. Will pick apart every single step you do. Even if you have the right answer, if its not EXACTLY how she does it its incorrect. be prepared to lose your mind with her
I had Shaparenko my sophomore year (2017). She is a sweet older woman but her accent was a bit hard to follow in the first couple days of the course. She is a very specific, tough and tricky grader. She looks for specific and has even taken points off for bad handwriting! But, she is very sweet and genuine.
Very knowledgeable, but hard to understand with her accent. Very tough grader, make sure to pay attention to how she does the problems and do the same on the exams. Study and do your homework and you'll do fine. If you need extra help, watch Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube.
Pay attention to how she does problems because it has to be her way or you won't get credit even if you get the right answer. Really study the homework and you should be fine for the exams.
Professor Shaparenko is not willing to help you out of class and she is very difficult to understand. Her exams are nothing like the material that is covered in class, and if something is not done her way, she doesn't give ANY credit. Long story short Do NOT TAKE HER, unless you want to work harder than you have to and want to struggle through.
Shes very picky when it comes to the exam, her accent makes it difficult to understand. But other than that shes nice.
Ive loved math my whole life, Its been 1 month and shes managed to get me to say I hate it. She has no Idea how to teach like a normal human being. She will criticize what you do then not even explain correctly why you got it wrong in the first place. she talks about non sense every class and is tough to understand. She has no teaching skills.
Lovely lady but, she teaches incredibly quick. She has no sense of time management and blasts through topics.
She will nit pick everything. If something is not lined up or do something outside of what she taught you it is wrong. Doesn't help gets mad why when you don't understand something. I've asked for help and she's said it should be self explanatory and walked away. Her support class isn't helpful either. DON'T take her unless you want to struggle.
Takes points off for everything. If your superscript is not small enough, points taken off & she writes this should be a superscript even though it IS higher & smaller than the rest of your equation, its just not high/small enough for her. Takes points off if work is not perfectly lined up, etc. You can have the right answer & work & get a 30%.
You have a better chance of winning the lottery than passing her class. Takes off points for square root symbols that are not long enough. Her lectures make me wanna walk into traffic. Might as well just drive without the seatbelt on. Lovely person tho.
Shaperenko is very caring and a very good teacher, but she doesn’t tolerate stupid mistakes and neatness matters. Her lectures are rather boring, but they aren’t horrible to understand. She will work with you if you go to office hours.
I had Professor Shaparenko my Freshman year at Berks (Fall 2019) - dropped out of Penn State in Jan 2020, but when I had her for 140B because i was a biochem major, she would nitpick on everything and it had to be her way on tests. I got a 91 in the class but with lots of tutoring. She is very lovely though but I would not take her again.
Pain.
Wonderful woman but terrible teacher beyond words
I took Prof Shaparenko my Freshman year as well (Fall 2021). I am sure she is a good person however as a teacher she can not teach. She can not explain anything in other terms for it to make more sense. Not helpful, when I asked for help multiple times said is was self explanatory and just walked away without helping. It was a huge pain.
