She's super sweet and gives many chances to turn in work late! Most assignments are part of a larger grade chunk that doesn't need everything to be turned in in order to get full credit! Great choice
It was her first-semester teaching at TAMU and she did great. She is so sweet and passionate about chemistry. Very approachable outside of class. Cares about her students and their grades. Went above and beyond during COVID-19 to try and keep class normal. Practice exams are similar to exams and the syllabus shows a great break down of grades.
Solid prof. Tends to spend a little long on clicker questions but she wanted to make sure that everyone understood stuff. LOTS of homework throughout the week that can be easily forgotten so spend sometime on the weekend doing it to get ahead. Lectures include clicker questions for credit so make sure to show up. Would take again if she taught 120.
Chemistry is difficult but she made it easier to understand. She was very patient during office hours, even when she let me interrupt her lunch. Shes very approachable and nice which are great qualities for someone teaching a subject many students struggle in. Even during quarantine, she made herself available and gave review sessions for exams.
Shes not the best with online but shes a good professor if chemistry is not your strong suit
take her. shes so sweet and her class is very easy to understand! you do have to purchase a homework subscription but it comes with the textbook. the lab is also very easy. just be sure to do the homework when its due, go to class if possible, and watch her lecture videos.
Dr. Altemose is the sweetest professor I have ever had! She truly cares about her students and will answer any question you throw at her. This class has many opportunities for participation points. Turn on your camera during lectures, she loves to see her student's faces and go to office hours anytime, she is more than happy to clarify topics.
This is by far my favorite prof at TAMU. She is kind, patient, and accessible, no matter how big your class is. If chem isn't your strong suit, take this course with Dr. Altemose. She is very understanding, just make sure to communicate with her. Make sure to take individual questions to her office hours instead of taking up everyone's class time!
Shes a great prof and is very caring. Gives lots of pts for HW and questions in class. Participation is very important every class. Make sure you have time before her class the day of because she posts lecture videos late the night before (between 5-12pm). There are 6 quizzes during the semester and a midterm. Lots of HW but its manageable.
Alicia is a very caring prof that truly cares about her students. She loves chemistry and makes sure everything is understood about the material. There's a midterm, final, bi-weekly timed quizzes, homework every other day, and at least two lecture videos before the zoom class the next day. This class was time-consuming, hard and a lot of work.
ALEKS homework 3 times a week, and participation questions after class during class to make sure you attended the lecture. However, she is the most caring and understanding professor, she dropped the two lowest quizzes, and you can always ask her if you have trouble with a topic. Chem is hard, but she's teaches it well, just watch her lecture vids.
Dr. Altemose was an awesome professor. She made chemistry super easy to understand, and she would always make time to meet with you during office hours or after class if you had any questions over the material. ALEKS can be a lot of work, but it's not too bad. She makes sure that her quizzes and exams only cover material that we've covered. 10/10.
ALEKS was awful but other than that I have no complaints. Super sweet lady and makes chemistry super easy to learn.
Prof Altemose is super encouraging and very patient with us in class. She gives seven small scales quizzes instead of high steak exams and goes over review question and gives participation questions that are similar to the quizzes. This class definitely requires a lot of studying and staying on top of lectures and ALEK homework but is very doable.
CHEM119 is a difficult class for most people but Prof Altemose gives you the best opportunity to succeed. ALEKS homework was due 3 times a week and took up a lot of time but that's not really her fault. Exams were hard but there's only two and the practice tests and SI sessions were very helpful. Go to class, take notes and you'll do fine.
She is a very kind, knowledgeable, and patient professor. She is also good at explaining concepts & clear on assignments, but she does post her lecture videos, slides, and participation questions quite late at night (the night before class). Chem is not an easy class and the workload is crazy. However, work hard and you can definitely get an A.
She is the best professor ever!! If you have the opportunity to take her.. Do it! Chem 119 is already a difficult course but the professor is clear in her lectures and always responds to emails fast. She has such patience and does not mind questions. The whole class gave her the nickname of "queen" because she really is amazing!!
lot of homework on Aleks with quizzes every few weeks and only midterm and final. you have to work and try to teach yourself on Aleks because lectures are repetitive and you solve very few practice problems in class. It wasn't that bad but you do have to work for it. Its chemistry and is difficult but just work on Aleks and read the book for help
The best chem 119 professors ever! She made every lecture easy to understand. Only had midterm and a final, but homework (ALEKS), reef participation question, and lecture quizzes boost your grade a lot. She is very helpful during the zoom lectures and will answer nearly ALL questions during the actual lecture. 100% recommend:)
Great Proffessor
I basically learned everything from the textbook. Lectures were not very helpful nor clear (and posted late almost every week, expected to watch them the night before class). Way, WAY too much work and unclear instructions for assignments (especially with how the lab is organized!) Maybe take this class at Blinn if you can
Dr. Altemose is one of the most caring professors I have gotten since I started here. Her class is hard but she makes sure to explain everything with clarity and answers any and all questions. She tries to makes lectures fun and gets her students to interact. Overall best professor in my opinion and would recommend, she made a scary class be fun.
Dr. Altemose is an amazing professor. She is very understanding with homework and will push it back if necessary. I think the main issue is she posts the lecture videos late in the day, so a lot of students don't have time to watch them. However, you do have a lot of things going into your grade so it is very easy to do well. Go to the IA's!
Dr. Altemose is one of the most caring profs I've had at my time at A&M. She understands that situations come up and often moves back homework. Her lectures are very helpful and so are the SI sessions. The mind tap homework is quite a bit but you have a week to do it so its manageable. Exams aren't too bad and if you study you'll be fine!
Dr. Altemose has been one of my favorite professors Ive had so far! I had to unfortunately q-drop chem last semester because I struggled with it so much, but thanks to Dr. Altemose I was able to do better this semester! Shes super helpful and is really understanding when it comes to deadlines.
She is pretty new to teaching and it shows. Classes are not well structured, and not very productive as a result. If it were not for in class participation (reef polling) i probably wouldnt have attended, since lectures are recorded and meant to be watched before class (often posted too late as well). She might be better with more experience.
Chem will be difficult whatever prof you take, but if you can take this one. This was my second time taking chem119, & it was 100% easier to understand with Altemose. She is so kind & goes slow & steady during class and answers all questions! She makes herself available outside of class and offers much help. Be ready to put that work in for an A!
Professor Altemose is one of the best gen chem professors at A&M. She is great at explaining the concepts and working through problems. If anything, she is a little too nice. A lot of class time was taken up reexplaining concepts that were supposed to be learned in the lecture videos posted before class. Mock exams are exactly like the test!
If youre like me & always struggled with chem then this will be a tough course but definitely not impossible. Dr. Altemose really helped me & our class in general on ensuring we had extra credit, review sessions, etc. Shes super sweet & worth taking if you have to take this on campus. Only had 2 exams (midterm + final) & 7 quizzes, 2 optional.
2nd time taking this class, the 1st time I had a horrible professor. Altemose made ALL the difference! She is so caring and understanding. Her IA works really well with her. Together, they teach in a way that is very understandable. The only 2 exams were the midterm and final. There were 7 quizzes total and she takes the highest 5. Def take her!!!!
Dr. Altemose does a fantastic job of teaching difficult material. Unprepared students caused the lectures to deviate away from their intended purpose. There are no shortcuts, You are going to have to prepare ahead of class and do the work in order to do well in the class.
Take Altemose for 119 if you can!! She is GREAT, chemistry can be a challenging class, and while her class isn't an easy A, she really helps and you can tell she wants her students to do well. She explains concepts super well and really prepares you for 120. An A is achievable as long as you go to class, take good notes, and study outside of class.
The quizzes and tests are pretty straightforward but I don't like how there are only 2 tests in the entire course so they weigh a lot on your final grade. There is a ton of homework, ALEKS is such a pain. Also we're constantly behind on the material and quizzes get pushed back every time. But easy labs, good lectures, plenty of office hours.
Dr. Altemose the amazing professors I have ever had! Honestly, if you do your work and prepare for her tests (there's only 2 :)! ) with the resources she provides, then the course shouldn't be very difficult. ALEKS takes time and it's not to bad. She is super kind and truly cares for your success. I really wish she was teaching CHEM 120!
Chemistry 117 is a weed-out class, and is especially horrible for students that will not use chemistry in their career. Be prepared to work hard for this class if you do not care about chemistry in the first place.
Altemose is probably the easiest professor you'll get. She moves at an extremely slow pace and pushes everything back. Only two tests all year and gives a review for them that are exactly like the test. She does take participation for a grade but I think every chem prof does this. Quizzes are very basic and labs are a joke. Take her if you can.
she never starts lecture till halfway in the time so we never get through the metal, which makes the homework ten times harder. half the time she cant actually answer your question.
She doesn't start until over halfway to class and can never answer your questions. She gives a ridiculous amount of homework but doesn't teach you how to do it. However, she is a very nice person and you can tell she cares, she just isn't a good teacher, also her dog is super cute
I will personally apologize in advance that you are forced to take Chem(Lab)117 as a freshman engineering major. Absolutely disgusting structure, not lenient on grading, and will surprise you with due dates. Pay close attention to weekly emails, and DO NOT procrastinate on any labs/prelabs. Don't bother emailing this prof, absolutely useless.
She is way too strict about assignments and due dates for a 1 hour class. Assignments are due bi-weekly, but for the one random time a quiz was due on an off-week, she had absolutely zero sympathy for those who did not get that quiz done on time and dropped our grade 4%. Do not expect her to be lenient and don't even try to reach out for help.
the class is extremely confusing, she confuses herself when teaching us difficult questions. She is a very kind prof and cares a lot about her students and how we do, she just doesnt know how to teach the material all too well. Your learning is dependent on the aleks because during lecture you will not learn much. Good Luck
Honestly, CHEM 119 with Altemose was my most favorite class this semester! The class is easy if you show up to class and use her power points and videos to study for the quizzes and tests (which where pretty easy and basic). She's probably the best and easiest CHEM professor out there!
Most of my knowledge of chem 119 stems from purely doing my ALEKS homework. I was not a big fan of Altemose's lecture methods (flipping through powerpoints during class); additionally, it took her at LEAST 15 minutes to begin teaching. Altemose is so nice and has a kind heart but I would not recommend- especially if you are not the best at chem :(
This is just a chem lab, so it's taught by a TA. Overall, grading is pretty harsh and the workload is intense for a 1 credit hour class. Honestly, you really have to prepare before class to understand the labs and get the right results. Homework is tedious. Same applies to most CHEM117 classes.
All of chem119 is literally a joke especially the labs. But Dr. Altemose is a new prof and Im not a fan of how Altemose lectures in class but she does give you all the materials you need to get an A in the class. She is so so sweet and caring and she definitely made chem a better experience for me.
The class was set up nicely. Theres only a midterm and a final (no other tests). I like that part. The problem with her is her teaching style. I learned nothing in lecture all semester and taught myself 100% of Chem 119. You can tell she is passionate about chemistry, but she has no idea how to teach. Independent learners, take her. If not, DONT!
DrAltemose cannot teach. She often doesn't even know how to solve the problems herself. Her writing is illegible. She gives hours of homework per week on top of hours of lecture you are expected to watch on your own time. She is incredibly slow and not confident in herself. The only good thing I can say is she's passionate. I self-taught everything
Altemose is hands down the worst professor at Texas A&M. She is obviously only here for the free research. I got the majority of my knowledge from ALEKS, our homework software because she didn't know how to teach during lectures. There were multiple occasions she didn't know how to solve problems that she gave us, which would confuse us even more.
She's one of those profs who clearly doesn't want to be there. She was extremely slow during lectures and never finished them. She would then expect us to watch hours of videos over the topics she didn't get to in class. Aleks for homework is terrible - takes multiple hours each week and doesn't help you learn. 100 midterm and 88 final got me a B
Dr. Altemose is clearly very knowledgeable, but struggles with time management. A LOT of learning on your own & work outside of class. That being said, if you do the ALEKS hw & study lecture slides & watch the videos she provides, you should be fine. She dropped 2 quizzes at the end which really helped
*online* Wasn't confident but she's a new teacher so didn't learn much from her. Homework was annoying but straightforward with unlimited tries. Lab depends on your TA but it's just a lot of busy work. Tests were easy enough as the quizzes show you the type of questions you will see. Clicker for class so make sure you show up a decent amount.
Dr. Altemose is new to teaching; that being said, she was not a great lecturer and never finished the material. She was difficult to access outside of class and expected us to watch hours of videos to keep up with the material on top of the ALEKS hw. However, the class is not hard to get a good grade in if you do the homework and teach yourself.

We failed to cover all the material in class and had to watch lecture recordings to complete the homework. On a positive note, there are dropped quizzes, and the exams are similar to the reviews. You can tell that Dr. Altemose clearly cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed in her class. She was always willing to go back and explain concepts that her students were confused on, but this did make her lectures pretty slow-moving. The homework was also very time consuming, and you needed to learn some material on your own time.
Dr. Altemose is such a sweet lady but would not recommend her as a professor. She seemed to not completely understand the chemistry topics herself which confused us students even more. Her teaching method is not very organized and her notes are a little confusing. Overall, she is an incredibly sweet lady but I would not recommend taking her course.
Very nice as a person, but extremely unorganized as a professor. Our class got 2 weeks behind the other chem classes bc she couldn't get through a lecture on time. Very hard to follow her work through a problem and the lessons never had much structure. You will learn more from ALEKS than from lectures. Coming from someone whos not great at chem:(
Dr. Altemose is not a great lecturer and we were always behind schedule with course material. Quizzes are harder than the exams, so be sure to study for those. There is only a midterm and a final which are easy because she gives you a review/ practice exam before each. Overall, an A is doable but it is a lot of self-teaching using ALEKS.
Altemose was a very sweet professor, but she is new and I think is still trying to find her teaching style. I feel like in a couple years she will be a much more confident professor, but this semester was not bad at all. She is very adaptive and kind. ALEKS was not even that bad but literally every chem professor uses it so there is no escaping.
Very caring about her students and very accessible outside of class for those who need help. If you can do the mock exams, you'll do pretty well on the exams. Her lectures get confusing and chaotic at times, but she posts lots of additional material that help. Not my favorite teaching style but definitely one of the best chem professors available
My course was a guinea pig class for her new teaching method. Class was not organized and we were always behind in lecture. She is very kind and caring about the students, but I wish the class was more structured and on time so I wouldn't be pressured by the amount of information that is piling up.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. She is genuinely a nice person but in my opinion she is not suited for the classroom. I had to go out of my way to get extra lessons from A+ tutoring and that's what really got me through the semester. Id say the only good thing about her class is she is a very easy tester and gives practice exams.
lectures are useless,self taught everything from the videos she posted+hw modules.lots of time commitment needed outside of class. mock exams are useful and similar in content to the actual exam (she uses the same type of questions but asks you to solve for a dif variable).if you know how to do everything in the mock exam youre guaranteed an A.
Altemose is an OK prof. Very nice and generous when it comes to test prep, but her lectures can get hard to understand and most will find themselves learning 90% of the material on their own time. If you cannot teach yourself material, don't take her. Her exams are quite easy, with half MC and half FR, and practice exams help a lot.
Dr. Altemose is an amazing person, but I could not for the life of me understand her work or the way she explained things. She gives practice exams before the exams but even with that its a lot of self teaching from Aleks. She also falls behind very easily so will skim over things that are very important material and it pops up on the exam.
Very nice person but did not cover a single problem in class. She would lecture over things that were never tested on and you would have to learn the test problems on your own. Several problems that were never covered on homework or in class would be on the exams. I have nothing against her as a person but don't take this teacher.
Dr. Altemose is one of the sweetest human beings ever, but her lectures only lead to confusion and do more harm than good. The only reason I am doing so well is because of the homework system and the mock exams that are provided. I have taught myself this entire semester. If you are a self learner, take her. If you are not, find another professor.
Prof is a very sweet lady and I can tell she cares about her students but her style of teaching is very odd. Attendance for her lectures is mandatory, but she teaches an insane amount of useless information that will not show up on exams. She skips over useful problems in class and makes students learn most things at home or through ALEKS (hw).
Dr. Altemose is a super sweet lady and genuinely cares about her students. However, she is not at all a good teacher. I was able to do well in the class solely because I taught myself through ALEKS, generous exam prep, and remembered things from previous chemistries. Participation is graded so you still have to attend. Do not recommend!!!!!!!!
I'm sure she's a nice lady, but her class is horrible. She required 3 different homework subscriptions, lectures were mandatory, yet made you even more confused so you have teach yourself everything, amount of homework was insane, not enough time given for long difficult tests, and she wouldn't cover all test material before tests.
Although she may be a nice person, as a professor she isn't understandable as her lectures were very messy and unorganized. For example, she would skip over questions in class that would pop up on the exam and for her teaching she would literally just read off the slides word for word. She would also mess up on required iClicker questions answers.
Altemose is a good person but her lectures are hard to understand. Half the time, I have to learn from Aleks even with that, I do not learn enough. When I am in class, it's hard to understand her during her lectures. She reads off her slide and not explain it enough. The exams were not to bad. She posts mock exams . The SI & Zoom were helpful.
Dr. Altemose's class wasn't too difficult but you must commit outside of class. Attendance taken via iClicker. A lot of homework comes in from lab and it's tedious at times. Mock exams are really similar to tests so if you can do those then you'll be fine. The only thing I'd say is she falls behind easily and has to skim through important things.
If you're self-sufficient, you'll do fine. Dr. Altemose is nice, but she spends a lot of time on announcements and iClicker, so we have to rush through some of the important exam material. She posts old lecture videos to watch at least. There is lots of homework on ALEKS and lab stuff to take care of, but time manage well and you'll be fine.
The review is more for Chem 117, not Alicia Altemose (hence the 5-star rating). This class was absolutely awful. Assignments do not teach or demonstrate concepts. Assignments include doing the same calculation 90 times. Grading criteria are unclear and there is little to no feedback. I would recommend getting a waterproof notebook to be safe.
She has very clear grading criteria and as long as you meet that criteria, you will do well. All the labs are group projects. Before each lab, you have to complete the pre-lab assignments and quizzes. You will have SmartWorksheets over your labs and have to submit your lab notebook. It's a LOT of work for a 1 credit hour class.
The professor and the TAs sent regular emails, and all of the grading guidelines were clear. The Chem 117 course itself is alright, but I appreciate Dr. Altemose's regular communication each week with reminders and explicit deadlines.
Lots of example problems done in class. Only have to attend 70-75% of classes to receive full attendance points (assuming that you answer all clickers questions correctly on days you attend). Occasionally fell behind in lectures and sometimes would barely make it through all the material before tests. Stay ahead on ALEKS homework.
She was very clear as to what to expect on exams making her class relatively easy. Her mock exams were almost identical to her actual exams. You will make an A if you study. Take her :)
Dr Altemose very intelligent and caring, but the structure of the class and her grading system made me struggle. Her lectures are not great as she reads off of slides and has a monotone voice. Lectures on are pretty useless for exams. You can't view your grade average without doing some math because the average is not posted on your Canvas.
This class really was the worst class in the first semester of engineering. The TA you have doesn't really matter. The labs are easy but SO LONG. Hope you have this later in the day because I would've hated to have this in the morning. The prelab and postlab work takes HOURS and every mistake you make on a quiz or hw TANKS your grade. (No final)
The quizzes are way harder than the exams and the exams are fine as long as you study her mock exams. We still have 1 more exam and the final but I'm sitting at a B and don't think I'll drop down. It just depends on how much work you're willing to put in. Dr. Altemose is a little interesting but she's sweet, you can pass her with a decent grade.
The actual lab isn't too difficult but the SmartWorksheet assignments are absolute garbage. There is no room for error, if you accidentally press enter on your keyboard or make a slight typo your grade will drop. Make sure to get a great group.
Dr. Altemose was overall easy to follow but the pace of the course is a bit fast so it is difficult if you didn't take an advanced chemistry in high school. The lectures were a bit disorganized and Dr. Altemose did have trouble wrapping up her lectures in time and so the topics were often explained in a disjointed manner which was challenging.
The class consists of a ton of lectures, and very difficult exams. She tells you what homework problems to study for the weekly quiz, which range from very helpful to near useless. Attendence is mandatory, and participating in class is also mandatory, as if you don't you'll likely do badly on the iClicker questions, which are graded.
I had Dr. Altemose for CHEM-107, and she was a great teacher. There were 3 tests and a final where I received an 89 or above on all. At the beginning of the semester, she starts out very slow and speeds up ALOT at the end. Overall I couldn't have asked for a better Chemistry teacher and IA. When studying make sure to study the quizzes she assigns.
I had her for the 117 lab and while the lab was fine, the HW was atrocious. There were no clear grading criteria, grades were hidden the entire semester, there was no instructions for the smart worksheets, and when they did provide instructions for projects, they focused almost entirely on formatting and almost nothing on expected content.
Lab requires a lot of work and there are many ways to get deduction on points. The syllabus and what is expected for grading is not clear. Some areas graders where harsher than others and then sometimes they were looking for specific answers. Overall, it is a lot of work and is fast paced for a one hour credit course. be ready for workloads .
I only took her labs but the hw was unnecessarily hard. Quizzes were average. Group projects are graded pretty harshly so get a good group. show up to lab!!!
Dr Altemose is very sweet and caring! She genuinely wants you to succeed. However, her lectures always seem to drag on and on. We were always behind and then would have to cram lots of content right before the exam. The work load was pretty average and I didn't think the exams were too hard. Her office hours were helpful.
This past semester was her first time teaching 117, she did a pretty good job. Her quizzes and exams have a good amount of tricks on them so even if you study and know curriculum, the chances of slipping up on major assignments is high.
She's nice and gives good material and not a crazy amount of work, I didn't get an A because I didn't take the class seriously enough which I regret but even with slacking off I still got a B+
Dr. A is a great prof to take for Chem 107. Her lectures start slow at the beginning of the year and speed up a lot towards the end. All quizzes are taken outside of class online and so is the first exam. She releases feedback on all the quizzes and is very caring and willing to help students. One of the best general chem profs.
Super nice person, she's not the best lecturer as she's always a bit behind but she gets the job done. The class is fairly hard as not many engineers are good at chem but if you do average on quizzes/exams you should be fine.
Great and passionate lecturer. Attendance is a good portion of your final grade. Weekly homework that takes quite a bit of time to finish but is great preparation for the five quizzes we have over the semester. Only a midterm and a final exam. Skipping lectures is an easy way to fall behind. Great feedback on quizzes and easy-to-follow lectures.
Fun & passionate teacher. Has 6 sort of hard quizzes (lowest one dropped) & 2 tests (midterm and final). Quizzes & midterm are online & can be taken anytime during the day it opens. Final is also online. Very willing to help students outside of class. Records lectures and posts filled notes but uses iClicker to keep attendance up. Must study.
Dr. Altemose is super nice, her lecture explains things very well, and she always willing to help students outside of class. She host help sessions very often. 6 quizzes, 2 exams. Don't skip classes, and you will be fine

Really nice teacher, provides up to 3 bonus pts on semester avg from extra credit. Teaches a little bit slowly but that's honestly fine. She is always willing to help if you have questions. Quizzes are weighed an absurd amount so take those very, very seriously.
She was really nice and definitely need to go to lectures for the clicker points and her clicker points are easy to get 100 on and provides extra credit. Everything was good except the quizzes are really heavy on grade so study for them, it was the only reason I got a B and not an A.
Very easy class and teaches chemistry in a great way for those who are exposed to it for the first time. Attendance was mandatory in the sense that you had to complete participation activities while in class for a grade but other than that the class was great. Would reccomend.
The best part about CHEM107 with Dr. Altemose was the fact that she recorded every lecture and posts them on Canvas. Her lectures are helpful but not exactly engaging. The quizzes are easily the hardest part of her class, followed by the midterm and final; make sure to do well on those and you have an A.
Dr. Altemose is a great professor and very accessible outside of class.Quizzes were the hardest part of this course but make sure to do the end-of-chapter problems and the homework and you should be good.The midterm and the final are easy if you prepare well (do A LOT of practice). Definitely take Dr. Altemose if you can, she's the best.
Dr. Altemose is an amazing professor for CHEM 107. She has engaging lectures and is a very approachable person for questions. She responds to emails very quickly and is happy to help. She teaches the material very well. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she does use iClicker that is part of your grade. Lots of HW, two tests and 6 quizzes w/ one drop.
I'm tempted to give her 1 star because of inflated her rating is in my opinion. Everyone left lectures visibly confused and her teaching style wasn't effective at all. Only went to class for iclicker, and learned through SI sessions and Professor Dave on youtube. You can barely see her in class "experiments" that also get no explanation. Annoying.
She was a good lecturer and cares about her students. I wouldn't take her again but that's just me; I would still recommend her class. Be prepared to read the slides and know them well for quizzes and exams though.
Literally the sweetest human being on the planet. She's so nice and willing to help you if you reach out. Honestly, the only people I know who had a problem with this class are people who thought they could get by without studying or going to class (so, their fault not the professor's). If you put in the effort you'll be gucci.
She is the GOAT. My favorite prof ever. She knew my name after I had only gone to a few office hours. The HW can sometimes take a while, but are manageable if you start early. The HW are the best way to learn. Dr. A really cares about the students, and you can always go to her with any problem you are having. 100% hope to have her in a later class.
Altemose was a very chill and caring professor. The class itself isn't that difficult but sometimes the quizzes can be weird and difficult, exams weren't terrible. Put in a little effort to study and it should be at least an easy B.
Class was the hardest class I took. Im bad at chemistry and didnt put much work into it. Shouldve ended with a C but somehow secure the B. Her quizzes are insanely hard and are proctored online. A lot of extra credit and very reasonable with extensions. She's honestly a great professor

She's really nice but you mostly learn from homework. Lectures are just her reading directly off the slides and she'll rush important topics. I learned everything from the ALEKS homework. If you don't mind teaching yourself you'll do well. Participation is taken in every lecture by doing iClicker questions.
She is always in a good mood in class which brightens everyone up! Her lectures can be rushed sometimes, but you can always find her notes posted on Canvas (I find that her posted notes are better than in class.) I got good understanding of the topics through the assigned homework. The quizzes and exams aren't too bad.
Dr. Altemose is an amazing professor, and is super caring and willing to help students if you seek it, although her lectures are rushed and overwhelming. Clicker questions are used for participation in class. Go to her office hours and attend SI/IA sessions and you will be fine, and don't underestimate the class!
Dr. A is one of the sweetest professors ever! So approachable! The class itself is difficult, especially if you've never taken a chemistry course before. Dr. A hosts several in person and online office hours, practice sessions, and provides so many practice problems! Ask questions, go to office hours, and put in some effort and you should be good!
Great English, funny, slides were sufficient, lecture recordings were available. Very approachable professor. Take-home quizzes and take-home midterms were HARD. Chemistry for Engineers is just Chemistry...with students who are Engineers...content includes orbital diagrams, molecular structures, thermodynamics, reaction rates, and other things.
Dr. A is an amazing professor for a difficult class. She goes through pretty much every topic in class with examples and is very accessible outside of the classroom, having weekly review sessions. She is very understanding, and also has a class GroupMe where you can ask her questions about course material. One of my best professors.
Dr. Altemose is most likely one of the best professors I'll have during my time here. She breaks down every concept very thoroughly and genuinely cares about our learning. She is super sweet and engaging during lectures. You will learn a lot if you take her and apply yourself. She also does super cool experiments during class.
Her rating is way too low. Yes the class is hard if you haven't taken a chem class in awhile but Dr. A gives great feedback and lectures very well. She also cares about her students and how they are doing and she is very accessible outside of class. The only issue I had with her is that we were constantly behind but I don't think thats her fault.
Professor Altemose is a great teacher! She encourages active note-taking in class while listening to the lecture. Clicker points are used to monitor attendance, but she offers "extra credit" assignments to make up for missed lectures. Quizzes are hard (lowest dropped), but not unreasonable. Make sure you review well before taking the test.
Overall her lectures are informative and interactive with students. I had no personal dislike towards the professor other than the grading breakdowns. The quizzes are extremely difficult for students who haven't taken any prior college level Chemistry classes, and the exams are just as hard. Mock exams are way too easy compared to the real exam.
She runs through the lectures like crazy but for most classes you have to self study so it's alright. She's super nice and provides a lot of resources to study but one thing I'd say is that she gives out practice tests and tells you that it doesn't mean you'll do good if you do well on them so what's the point of giving those practice exams.
If you pay attention during lectures and do the iClicker and Owl homework, getting an A is really doable. Dr. Altemose is super caring and understanding. There are 6 take home quizzes but the lowest is dropped. I got an A on the two exams but the final was much harder. Other than that, I really enjoyed the class.
Dr. A is probably one of, if not the most, accessible prof I've had all semester! She also made lectures fun with pet pictures (and sometimes demos) and brings an upbeat vibe to lectures. Attendance is mandatory via iClicker. 3 exams (last is cumulative final). This class is tough, but Dr. A provides mock exams and has extra practice + SI sessions.
Flew through lectures and is overall a really terrible lecturer in my opinion. Her grading breakdown is nonsensical. We aren't able to view our grades on canvas which I do not see the point in whatsoever. She is kind though, but a bit passive when you ask questions. Her mock exams aren't helpful, so don't waste your time. Final was horrific.
Dr A is phenomenal! She's super sweet and fun and showed pictures of her cows/dogs before class and learned my name faster than any professor I've had so far. Though there's not extra credit, she had office hours/review sessions almost every day. The class itself was difficult but study and take advantage of her office hours and you'll be fine.
She is very kind, but the class is insanely difficult. Two exams that weren't too bad, then a final that was very hard. The quizzes are online with Respondus, and they are very hard and worth 15%, so study for them. IClicker is 10%, so attend classes and don't skip. Overall a very nice professor with clear objectives, but be prepared to work hard.

She speeds through lectures but posts them so you can catch up if needed. The exams were generally easy; however, the final is going to haunt me. Overall, not a bad class, just work hard.

Dr. A was a very nice and caring teacher. Personally, I found most of her course managable to complete including the weekly OWL homework and occusional quizzes. There are also participation questions every class which count to your grade. Her first two exams were easy but her last exam was quite challenging. Still better than most others.
Prof. Altemose is a caring instructor who makes the material approachable. While quizzes can be challenging, staying on top of homework and using resources like Unstuck ai makes it manageable. Put in the effort and you'll likely secure a solid grade.
Dr. A is the goat. She's very understanding and accommodating. The people complaining about the difficulty of the quizzes don't know how to study. They were very manageable and she drops the lowest one. She also rounded my 89 to an A after I did poorly on the final .People complaining about the mock exams are lowkey geeked they were very helpful
Dr. A is awesome. She keeps me engaged in classes by providing a picture of her cows/dogs at the start of the class! The best thing about her is that we have a groupme with all of her sections. Students are able to help each other out, but more importantly, Dr. A responds to a lot of questions herself in a really short time.
The class itself is tough, regardless of the professor. Dr. A grades fairly and has fun lectures. Don't just do the iClickers and do other hw in class; actively listen to her lectures. You get exactly what you put in to this class. Heads up, quizzes are tougher than you think.
The grade you get reflects the work you put in. I had no faults with Dr. A and I could've had a higher grade if I paid more attention in lectures. As a Prof, she is very approachable and friendly. For anybody not interested in Chemistry, 107 is going to be difficult no matter what.
People confuse her teaching skills with her kindness. She is caring and accessible outside of class, but she is a bad professor. She spends WAY too much time talking about her pets and ends up cramming too much in lectures. She's also VERY disorganized and has messy handwriting when working on problems. All your learning has to be outside of class.
She is the only teacher who gives FRQs on the tests. Her lectures were difficult to follow and didn't explain concepts well. The class made it for you to succeed if you already knew chemistry and struggle heavily if you didn't.
She is an alright person, but her teaching style is definitely not for everyone. She also is the most difficult professor test-wise, as each 107 prof gets to write their own tests for whatever reason. She is also the only prof that had FRQs, and my grade tanked because god forbid I do an iota of math in my head. Take someone else if you can.

Her lectures are veryconfusing and not helpful, but she post typed up slides after that class of what you talked about that day. They are a lot more thorough and make more sense than following along with her in class. Her test are hard they're only 16 question multiple
She seems very nice and wants people to do well but she is insanely unorganized. She's show us incorrect practice problems all the time and only correct herself via long emails. She's rude when you address her mistakes in class, and the learning lab she runs is even worse. More incorrect answer keys and tutors who are just as confused as us.

Quizzes that are almost weekly are MUCH more difficult than any practice question done in lecture (which may or may not be done right the first try in class). I only did well in the class because I self studied with a study guide some other student made.
Definitely do not take her for 120. She has no idea how to teach the course and every single day will solve the problems wrong in lecture and then send out an email late at night with an explanation on how to actually solve the problems. I began this class with high expectations for Dr. Altemose due to her reputation as a great professor for Chem 107, but when I came to Chem 120, I was incredibly disappointed. It seemed as if she either did not know or did not remember the content she was teaching in class. She continuously makes mistakes and shows a complete lack of understanding.
She is very nice and to say she doesn't care about her students would be a lie, however she seems unfamiliar with the material or just struggles to teach it. Attendance isn't mandatory but is graded and not by enough to outweigh quiz and test grades if you do poorly on them. Frequently explains problems wrong in class and gives super hard tests.
Although Alicia is very accessible outside of class and cares about responding to students groupme messages, she is not a good professor for chem 120. She struggles with the material and tells us the wrong thing. Quizzes are also harder than practice problems given. Be prepared to learn from the SI leaders and youtube.
Just don't take her. She does not know the Chem 120 material, or at least she doesn't show that she knows it. She always makes mistakes and has to go back the next day to fix them. Tests and quizzes are 10x harder than what is done in class. Yes, she is a nice, giggly person, but that is it. If you take her, you will have to learn on your own.

Totally unprepared to teach Chem 120. Lectures were unclear, and tests didn't match what was covered. She left for an international trip during a critical week (test & Q-drop) without advance notice or email support. The complete disregard for students' success was unacceptable. If you want a knowledgeable or caring professor, take someone else.
By far the worst professor I've had! Although sweet, her lectures are very difficult to follow. I end up teaching myself the material and when preparing for the exam, her mock test is NOTHING like the exam. In addition to giving a short time limit on exams, she offers very limited resources to study and I truly wish I had taken another professor.

Her tests are so difficult, that another professor commented to his class, "Be thankful y'all aren't taking Altimose's exam tomorrow." SHE IS BUNSSSSS. Altemoses's Exams are so chopped, and she doesn't even know what she is teaching half the time. Multiple times in class, she did the problems wrong and told us to forget it and that she would post the updated slide later. Just don't take her, and if you can, switch out.

I can see a lot of people think Altemose's class is hard, and I agree, I will absolutely concede that. There is very limited bonus, you need to attend lecture, the exams are time limited and each question has heavy weight. My issue is that the exam questions are just like the quiz, homework, and practice exam questions, just with different numbers.
I dont want to write this because she cares about her students but Altemose is not great for 120. Don't get me wrong she's not the worst, take her over Mawk or Songok. Quizzes are ROUGH and tests are harder than practice exams or homework. She only curves if no one got 100. This is a weed out class (HARD) and you will be teaching yourself with her
Avoid. Tests and quizzes don't match lectures. She doesn't just substitute numbers like another reviewer said. Leaving her students hanging with no support to jet to Australia tells you all you need to know about how much she prioritizes her students. Save your sanity--take someone else.
The hw, in class practice problems, and practice exam are always so much easier than the actual exam, it feels like you're going in blind. Not enough practice problems at the rigor of the exam.
Dr. A is really nice, which is why it's so unfortunate her lecturing for CHEM120 has been sub-par. While she has given us a few extra credit opportunities and does partial credit on some of the MCQ, it doesn't make up for how difficult the quizzes and exams are. I LOVED 119, so it's been really discouraging. Take someone else — Zhu if teaching.

Dr. Altemose seems like a nice person but not a great prof. Her practice problems on IClicker and the lectures definitely don't resemble the difficulty level of the tests and quizzes. She has zooms and office hours to help but the main issue is that the tests are short and worth a lot but not enough similar practice problems are provided.
This review bombing after the third exam is ridiculous. Altemose has given us every opportunity to succeed, from constant responses on GroupMe to filled notes. Everyone talking about “mistakes during class” is referring to maybe two times that ever happened, and she's made up for it. She's great, don't let unprepared people's reviews sway you.

IGNORE APRIL 2025 REVIEWS. Everyone's mad about a hard exam because it was different from the practice and she was out of the country. This DOESN'T negate how wonderful she is. While this is a hard class and she makes human mistakes, she cares for her students. Posts notes and kind. Out of what's available for 120 she's one of the better options.

Her 6 quizzes are mini exams and definitely not grade boosters.
She isn't a bad teacher. However, the course is extremely rigorous. There are few opportunities to increase your grade outside of exams. She instead of replacing an exam grade she averages the final with it which is extremely frustrating. This class has no room for forgiveness and if you're not perfect expect to drop it. Simply: Take another class.

I'm pretty conflicted with Professor Altemose. Chem 120 is definitely a step up from 119, which I loved. I had imo the best professor at a&m, professor Karim Afroz for 119, so going from her to Prof Altemose was a significant decline in teaching. She is a very nice lady, but her lectures are very subpar and tests are difficult. Do not recommend.

She cares a lot about the students yet she doesn't explain the best but overall she prepares you pretty well for the exams. Exams are 16 questions but almost identical to the mock exams she gives you in far advance. Quizzes are the hardest will little questions but they are very close to the examples on the slides. Definitely would take her again.
Let me be honest: Dr. A makes this course way harder than it needs to be. She doesn't adequately teach the material compared to other profs. Almost everyone runs out of time on quizzes and exams and leaves feeling discouraged. Even as someone who studies daily and has a 4.0, I've struggled greatly. Dr. A is sweet, but seriously don't take her.

Messes up occasionally during her lectures, doesn't need to make quizzes lockdown browser + webcam, and definitely could make tests longer than 16 questions.
She left the country before our third exam and Q-drop deadline. The average for our exam was a 70% with a curve. She has the canvas grader off and her grade calculator is not accurate. Many people Q-dropped and she didn't come back a day before the last Q-drop date. Her bonus points won't improve your overall score. Do with the info what you will.

The quizzes are pretty rough and they are timed. You are going to have to use ALL offered resources to be successful on the exams. The mock exam isn't enough.
For some reason everyone thinks a 70% average for a 400 person class in gen chem is bad, when that's probably on the high side. I've never been in a lecture this big with an exam average over 75. Also, she's coming back before the q drop date, she didn't just “leave out of nowhere.”

Mrs. Altemose's class is where curiosity goes to die. Her lectures are dull, her explanations are wrong 50% of the time, and her exam's like stepping into the Nether in Minecraft without any resources. Chemistry becomes a fog of confusion under her instruction. If learning is a spark, she's the extinguisher. She transforms science into suffering.

I am disappointed to see some reviews bashing our professor and am surprised to see that many of my peers seem to be lacking accountability. She is kind, very easily reachable outside of class, and always willing to help. In my opinion, chem is a difficult course, but needing to put in some extra study time doesn't mean your professor isn't good.
Very sweet person, however her exams are fairly different and often harder than any of the other material in the class, which makes them difficult to prepare for. Lectures are fairly boring and hard to sit through, but she posts them after the fact which helps. Would be a much more manageable class if the exams matched the mocks more closely.
Dr. A is a very sweet lady, but I had a lot of trouble learning in her class despite going to every lecture and spending countless hours studying. She is good at writing really hard exams, and if you aren't a natural at chemistry, you will struggle with her. The assignments and lab aren't enough cushion if you do poorly on her exams/quizzes.

She is so horrible. I have never had a professor so hard to follow and disorganized. Her exams are so difficult and her material will not prepare you. From the first exam to the end it feels like you're drowning and you have to teach yourself everything. I genuinely don't think she could pass her own exams.
She doesn't prepare you for the exams at all. Lectures don't match what's on the test and there's barely any helpful practice. Every test and quiz was basically a jump scare, nothing like what she gives you in class, on iclickers, or ALEKS.
I have never been so lost in a class before. I swear she also doesn't know what she is talking about and messes up at least once each lecture. She makes quizzes and tests way harder than they need to be. And lab won't help either because guess what, SHES HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT AND MADE THE LAB TEST IMPOSSIBLE. Don't take.
Dr. Altemose seems like a genuinely nice person, but not a great professor unfortunately. The homework she assigns is not aligned with what ends up on quizzes and exams (btw 7.5 pts. per question and only 16 Qs on exams-do the math). She left in the middle of the semester to another country with NO prior notice and returned day of Q-Drop.
In my opinion, she is not someone who cares one bit. She seems to get pleasure knowing people struggle in her class, and knows students are critiquing her on RMP but even then refuses to look at it because it'll "make her sad" instead of seeing what she can do to improve. Never have I studied 20 hrs for exams and failed (she'll trick you on them).

Dr. A's class is a rollercoaster of confusion, and the almost biweekly quizzes are the true loop-de-loops. Lockdown browser + webcam = constant stress, like they're watching you fail in real time. Lectures are a mix of mistakes and surprise concepts, and exams feel like a game of “Guess What She Meant.” Sweet lady, but this class is a nightmare.
Dr. A is very nice, however DONT TAKE HER CLASS. She is completely all over the place when teaching and her exams are IMPOSSIBLE to pass. If only she would teach from a students perspective instead of assuming that everyone is already an expert. PLEASE IF YOU CAN TAKE SOMEONE ELSE DO SO.
Dr. A is a sweet lady with a caring personality, but her chem 120 class is near to impossible. She was confused on her own material, and often taught us the wrong way. She rushed through notes as if we already knew how to do these very complex problems. I went to SI and got a tutor, and the exams were horrible. I do not recommend taking her.
She's only giving a final exam review if 75% of the class completes the course evaluation. She's prioritizing her feedback over her students learning and success. If helping students really matters, a final review session shouldn't be conditional and should be offered no matter what. This says all you need to know about taking her class.
I took Professor Altemose Fall 2023. While I don't remember the exact details, I can say that she was a good lecturer. Many people here are complaining about how she only gave a final review if 75% of the class completed the AEFIS course evaluation, but no professor is obligated to give a final review. Besides that, I have no complaints.
this was just the worst. prof A is SO SWEET, but her teaching capabilities were subpar. tests were IMPOSSIBLE, if you don't study a week + in advance, your'e cooked. quizzes with webcam were SO hard too. not sure why she made everything so hard like ???. ik chem is tough, but she made it unbearable & miserable tbh :( she's so nice though
Skipped through half the notes and seemed to expect students to know how to do everything. Was usually all over the place when lecturing and would get lost in her own work. Office hours were okay at best. Homework takes hours upon hours of work.
She doesn't deserve all the hate she gets. She's made a few mistakes in class, but the main thing is that one of her exams was extremely difficult and her quizzes are close to impossible to do well on. Doing good on the exams makes up for the quizzes and as long as you pay attention in class and do the extra credit, a B should be very attainable.
I do not reccomend this class, Dr. Atlemos is a great person but her test difficulty and quizzes are very hard. I got an A in Chem 119, but failed almost every quiz and exam in this class. She has the overall grade locked too so you are never sure what you have minus the calculators she posts where you have to estimate every future grade.

I took her for Chem 120. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!!!! If you enjoy feeling more lost after attending a lecture, take her class. Tests and quizzes are outrageous. Save your GPA and take literally anyone else. Who knows, maybe she will take two weeks off with 1 day's notice before an impossible exam(actually happened). Good luck!

This class was a real struggle. The lectures were confusing, and the she made mistakes during class that added to the difficulty. I learned far more in SI and IA sessions than I ever did in class. The quizzes were very challenging, and the homework didn't match the difficulty or style of the exams, which made it hard to know what to expect.

Chemistry is not a subject that can just be memorized. That is why everyone thinks her exams are impossible to pass (many people did just fine). Instead of doing practice problems until you can answer a question any way it's given, people are blaming the professor. College is about learning. Find a new study method and take accountability.
I think all the bad reviews are coming from Dr. A's first time teaching chem 120. Even though it was her 1st time, I thought her lectures were pretty good and enthusiastic. My only complaint is that the quizzes were sometimes difficult. If you thoroughly understand every practice problem in class and don't chat the HW, you will be prepared.
Don't come into Chem 120 if you don't plan on studying more. Obviously, the mock exams are going to be different than the actual exams or she'd just be giving you the answers. The quizzes are difficult. If you learn ALL the underlying concepts, you'll soon realize that her class isn't impossible. Take these reviews with a grain of salt.

Lectures = somewhat confusing, She skips through the slides and doesn't do example problems worth your time. Exams are 16 questions no partial credit (unless majority fails). I came into chem 120 already having this credit from ap chem & I still struggled in the class. Her exams & quizzes are RLLY hard and require an in-depth understanding of concepts she doesn't rlly prepare you for. I would understand all the HW, lectures, & practice problems & still do bad on exams bc the questions were WAY beyond what we covered.
Save your gpa pls, don't take her. Got an A in chem 119, but struggled extremely in this course.
Altemose is an okay professor, but if you can get into another professor's class, I would HIGHLY recommend doing that. She asks questions on the quizzes and tests that are confusing and completely different than the questions she has gone over in class and on the homework. Achievable to get an A but a lot of work and self-teaching is required.
I think her lectures were good. Also her exams weren't that hard. For ex, a question I specifically noticed as hard on exam 3 was literally on the homework. The quizzes were hard, but not ALL of them. A few easier ones were present for balance. The quizzes were harder than the exams, good preparation.
Dr. A is a nice lady, but she struggles to explain material and answer questions, often creating confusion in class. Not a good option for people who already struggle with chem. Her exams are notoriously difficult (even acknowledged by another chem prof), and she doesn't curve. Sometimes there's partial credit though, and she provides mock exams.
I've seen a lot of 5 and 1 reviews, but she is probably somewhere in the middle. It is true that she left the country right before one of the exams and q-drop with no warning, which is why some people have her rated lower. You can do good, but it is MUCH harder than 119. Be prepared to fail at least 1-2 quizzes and underperform on at least 1 exam.
what i got in class: i averaged a 50 on the exams, including the lab assessment and final. i completed all of the homeworks, went to most classes, and averaged a 72 on quizzes. I passed with a 70. It's really hard to fail this class. The professor isn't that bad. There's a lot of homework. Quizzes are hard. But it's doable, since theres a lot of EC
Prof A is a decent professor and I would say cares for her students. She did make some mistakes in lectures, but they were fixable, especially if reviewing with outside sources. There is just so little room for error on quizzes/exams, which makes the class harder than 119. I averaged LOW on quizzes and high on exams for a fair B.
Dr. A is a nice person and was always accessible outside of class. However, lectures were disorganized, quizzes were impossible to pass, and exams were only moderately similar to mock exams and homework. It is not impossible to get a B, but be prepared to put all your effort into studying for just this class.
Altemose is a very caring and kind professor, but she needs some work on her preparation coming into CHEM 120 (especially her lectures). Her quizzes and exams are very difficult so I would study accordingly and ahead of time. Go to the CLL and do all the extra credit given.
Notice how even the 5 star reviews don't disregard how hard exams and quizzes are. The good reviews are saying you just need to put in a little extra work to get a B, but putting in 20+ hours for a single exam to barely scrape a B/C is diabolical and should be a wake up call to make exams easier. Save your time and gpa and just take another prof.
Took her for 107 and thought she was great and chem was just hard so took her again for 120 but quickly realized that a good portion of the difficulty came from her teaching methods and unreasonably difficult quizzes and exams. Don't get me wrong, she's super sweet and caring but please do not make that the reason you take her.
She is a very sweet and caring person. But she is not meant to teach 120, she knows about 107 but not 120. She has no idea what she's doing, but still managed to have the hardest exams possible. You have to self teach yourself for this class. It's really sad because she really does try and is very nice, but can't teach this class to save her life.
Very thorough lectures (can be a lot of info). She was super open to meeting outside class to discuss grade concerns. Relatively hard exams/final but thats more due to the class itself. I had no previous chem knowledge and struggled for an A. Altemose probably gave a small curve at the end of the sem which saved my grade. Hard class but nice prof!
Dr. A fumbles through lectures like she's reading off a bad script, constantly screwing up and wasting everyone's time. Her exams are a chaotic mess with impossible questions meant to fail you, not teach you. Taking her class is signing up for a nightmare—avoid like the plague.
I struggle to find out what to say about her... she often messes up things in lecture and can be very confusing sometimes. Her quizzes and tests are tough but can be manageable if you work hard. No matter what people say, the mock exams have the same format as the exams but just know the info. Overall not the best, but she is very nice and caring.
Ignore all the bad reviews, I'm convinced it's people who didn't get the grade they wanted. She genuinely cares about her students and was accessible outside of class. Additionally, she's a very fair grader and often gave partial credit or extra credit. You do have to pay attention in lecture; she won't just give you the answers. Do mock exams too!

Average Quality Rating: 1.95 / 5 Average Difficulty Rating: 4.58 / 5 Take into account ppl who got good grades are the ones giving the good reviews. Then, even ppl with As and Bs left negative reviews.
Dr. A as a person is very sweet. As a professor, however, stay away. Her lectures were scatterbrained and had tons of mistakes, as did the homework and tests (the final alone had at least three mistakes). I taught myself the material and passed because I learned how to take her tests. Overall frustrating and unacceptable for a "top tier" university
All these reviews are probably people who weren't used to putting in a little effort in a class. If you're hardworking and can follow some lecture slides and do the harder problems of each weeks homework and review the quizzes and mock exams she gives, the tests are essentially the exact same. She gives quite a bit of extra credit and is caring.
Yeah I failed 120. Part of that was me not getting myself enough help. I am not chemistry-ily inclined but almost got a B in 119. Major: POSC-technical. Dr A was a pleasant prof but VERY confusing (a lot of my classmates said so too). She's great for everything except lectures - those are basically useless. You'll need another source of info.
Very difficult and hard to follow. She writes all over the board in a very disorganized way during lecture. The tests, like others have said, are designed to separate the pass and fails - not much in between. Also, her 3 exams are 16 QUESTIONS! You do the math if you get just a couple wrong...
Dr A was kind and accessible outside of class; however, her lectures were very disorganized & hard to follow. The exams were very difficult, much more advanced than what is to be expected of Gen Chem. Beware of quizzes which are timed & entirely FRQ. I have never struggled with Chem until now and that seems to be a popular sentiment among students.
Dr. Altemose is so kind. She cares about her students so much. She is extremely accommodating and will work with you. Her lectures are clear and easy to follow. Chem 119 is not a fun or easy class, but if you have to take it, take it with Altemose.
She is a very kind person and is very easy to talk to and she tries her best to help as much as she can. But the class is so hard, and her quizzes and tests are much harder than whatever she teaches. Additionally, it is annoying because the other professors have easier quizzes and exams, and others do better with less effort.
While an extremely nice and understand person, my experience was not the best in the classroom setting. There would be many times we would learn something in class than get a long email afterwards saying she explained it wrong and this was the actual way to do it. Dr. A herself is a very kind professor, however with the amount of content in the course and its structure, it's very hard to ever feel prepared. I used the mock exams as a study tool, and while the exam was similar, it included a ton of unnecessary extra steps that I had neither the time or understanding to do effectively.
Left during the middle of the hardest test content for a week. Her Pop Quizzes were closed note and worth a good percentage of the grade, and they were harder than the exams. That being said, her exams were VERY hard! While she was gone, Professor Mawk guest lectured, and he said our slide content was too hard for our level. Tests were harder..

Chem 107's a common course but one area of improvement would be to find a new SI leader. The SI leader for fall 2025 gave the impression she really didn't care about her job and was forced to be there. Not only that but you'd be scared to ask her questions when it's an SI session and answering student questions is the whole point of those.
Her lectures are a trillion slides. She will spend 6 minutes talking, then say it's not on the test, and then have to rush to complete the notes. The quizzes and tests are way too short for what they are. And sometimes the homework will go over content that isn't on the test, or never taught, and they all take hours.
Dr. Altemose is a nice person. I had a terrible time while in her class. Her lectures were always a slog and at that same time still wouldn't cover enough. Tests were difficult but similar to her mock exams. The worst part of class was her homework. Takes literal hours and goes over redundant/non quiz and exam material on occasion. Overall, Awful.
Just no. Her quizzes were unnecessarily difficult with a consistent intention to mess you up on every question. As a person, she was very kind and quirky, she is not evil. But as a professor, she kind of is.

I can definitely tell that she tries to be the best she could. I think she is a very friendly professor and tries her best to make her lectures make sense but as someone who has taken AP chem before, I feel like people who hasn't done so would feel very lost in her class.
Dr. Altemose's lectures were extremely fast and confusing for me, But I think this is a result of the course and not the teacher. She is AMAZING in her office hours and extremely accessible in her GroupMe. This class was extremely difficult for me, but she is very willing to help you through the tough material. Don't be swayed by her bad ratings.
abandon all hope all ye who take this class, terrible lecturer; doesn't teach material very well, sometimes homeworks due before she actually goes over the material and when she does she'll cover one practice problem and ramble on about the next chapter or things that aren't gonna be on the test.
Chem 107 is hard period. But oh my god she is not good at explaining concepts and skips over the important stuff so quickly. She is so nice but it is so hard to pay attention during her lectures as she draws on unimportant material for so long. I would highly suggest going to the Chemistry Learning Lab if you can't get another professor to study.
She is a very nice person and that personality was fun to see during the lectures. But she was quite poor teaching during lectures and would often take too much time explaining some concepts and then just completely gloss over other concepts. Some concepts were even easier to learn outside of class than just based on her lectures. Mediocre overall

She is so caring. You can tell she loves chemistry and wants to see her students succeed. She isn't the greatest at explaining difficult concepts, but she gives so many opportunities to see her and learn. The bad reviews make her look way worse than she is; they just want a pushover who will give them an easy A.
Quizzes were unnecessarily difficult sometimes; She just makes the class harder than it needs to be. She has poor time management so she starts the class off really slow and then by the end she skips through a bunch of important slides and rushes the information so that we can kind of do the homework. She was nice though.

She does her best to make the lectures entertaining, does small cool experiments at the end of class. Her quizzes are very hard, but they prepare you very well for the common exams. I've never ONCE met a teacher so unbelievably TERRIBLE at teaching. Her lectures are messy slogs to go through (Some presentations had 100+ slides) and she does an AWFUL job at pacing herself. HW takes HOURS of time to complete while quizzes & exams significantly more difficult. Use Chad's Prep to (On YT) & pray if end up in her class...
The class itself is a lot, there's so much material to cover and the professor does really well in going over everything that needs to be covered. Yes sometime she rushes at the end but if you ever have questions she will sit with you one on one and help you understand things better. Show up to office hours, ask questions.
Lectures are big nothing burgers that don't cover the information you need. Do the homework and understand to the big picture and you'll do fine. She would explain simple topics in the worst ways that actually make things way harder to understand. 99% of the time just ignore what she says and find your own way to go about the problems and concepts.
Dr. Altemose is horrible at teaching bro. We did nothing productive other than name cows. She glosses over things way too quick and doesn't care for our understanding.
I put a lot of time into preparing for quizzes and exams, but they felt unnecessarily hard. Compared to mock exams from other professors, this class was much tougher. Her lectures didn't help me learn. While she cares about students, the workload felt unfair without common exams for chem 107.

Dr. Altemose is sweet and accessible, but her teaching is inadequate. Lectures were confusing and incomplete. Her own quizzes and exams were drastically different and more complex than the lecture, homework, and practice exam. Other professors' quizzes and exams were simpler. She didn't do extra credit, but she curved 2 points to a passing grade.
There are a lot of overly negative reviews but in general the best advice for her class is to do the homeworks. The exam/quiz questions are pretty much pulled from them verbatim. She isn't a bad prof but her SI does need to be replaced. Don't waste your time going over her slideshow when studying tho. hoemwork,quiz,exammockmuchbetter.
Overall, this course is not bad if you have taken chemistry before. I took AP Chemistry and got a 4, and I BARELY got an A in this class. The quizzes are hard, and the exams are pretty tough as well. I would say the best thing to do is go over the lecture slides before the lecture, and study the material a little bit everyday. Goodluck buddy.
While she is very caring, that doesn't help your grade! Lectures are all over the place and do not match the info in the test. She asked us to watch an hours worth of videos over the break since she didn't have time to cover it in class. Also gives the hardest tests out of any 107 professor. The only good thing is the detailed feedback on quizzes.
She is a very kind and supportive professor who offers many resources to help students succeed. However, the exams and quizzes were very challenging, and compared to other sections, they felt noticeably harder. The class has participation points, and the lectures can be somewhat unengaging.
Dr. A is a very caring professor with poor time management in lectures. If you're taking the time to understand the content and homework on your own you'll be fine. A lot of the difficultly of the class comes from the grading policies and lack of time spent on difficult concepts. Approach the class like math and learn to solve problems.
Overall, she is a very caring professor and also very accessible outside of class. The lecture slides could be a little confusing at times. She doesn't do a particularly amazing job at connecting the concepts, just kind of throwing them out there. The tests are the toughest out of any prof, but she also makes up for it with a curve.
Dr.Altemose is really nice and carrying. I was hoping to get an A or B in the course but the final is long and hard so LOCK IN a few weeks before! If this course is not mandatory for your degree I'd highly suggest taking 119 or 120, they are better suited for non-engineers! She's always accessible and helpful so make sure to go to office hours!
