essay due every week. lots of readings. lecture is pointless. easy midterm and exam.
People and Cultures of the Americas. Didn't go to class, didn't read, got an A
Interesting topic and lectures. There is a lot of reading, up 175 pages a wk sometimes! Only hw is a one-paragraph response to the readings once a week, which is nice. She gives you a study guide with bank of questions that will be on the midterm and final. FYI, this is really a Latino Studies class. I enjoyed it a lot tho, and recommend it.
This class is very straightforward. Chavez is rooting for your success. I got by without reading each week but ended up having to read a lot when studying for the exams. The paper is easy. The study guides are exactly like the exams. Use them!
Professor Chavez did a great job lecturing and making things interesting. She also made expectations of the class very clear, making it easier to succeed. There was a lot of reading but by the second half of the semester I stopped reading and still received a high grade in the class. Go to lecture and you'll be fine! Get Luis Carlos as TA!
Alicia is the opposite of mono-tone. Really cares about the students understanding of the subject. I loved the videos (I'm visual) right after a short presentation, so what she was talking about really stuck. Also, she's very helpful and the TA's are wonderful and happy to help. Class felt like story time to me.
Disgustingly lazy work ethic. Watched movies and student presentations more the lectures. Never got work back. Grading is arbitrary. I don't think she bothered reading most of it. Lectures themselves are an incoherent jumble of ambiguous "American Studies" jargon. We learned a lot of nothing.
She is great! Reading is not necessary, and she even makes occasional jokes about why nobody is participating in class. Occasionally disorganized but not to the point where it affects students. Interesting, easy to understand lectures.
Chavez is a great professor! Her class is very easy and the reading is not necessary. One final and two essays total. Interesting material and films.
Chavez-great professor. Often talks for 50 min about something that can be summarized in 2 sentences, but doesn't matter. Lot of reading, but worth it. Great class for the history lover (Race and Class in LA) and it's an interesting take on the city. Midterm, 1 paper, final and all are easy. Chavez is always excited and happy, making lecture great.
She is really boring the first half of class but gets more interesting as time goes on. Too much reading though, almost 200 pages a week.
Chavez is always enthusiastic and super-helpful during office hours. Midterm and paper are easy, take home final a little more complicated. She puts all her lecture slides on blackboard and we watch a lot of videos. Very disorganized, though, and there is a LOT of reading, quizzes most weeks and some in-class assignments. Fairly easy grading though
If you do the reading once a week, you're fine. Shes a fair grader and a really nice person. If you're looking for an easy B, you've got it. If you're willing to put in a bit of work, it isn't hard to improve your grade.
She honestly did something different every lecture. She incorporates technology a lot. We actively discuss the readings in a collaborative environment. If you don't like her paper topics she will let you choose one. Everything learned she wants you to apply to life.
She wastes time trying to connect with the students and isn't even successful. When she's lecturing she does well, but often spends too much time trying to engage the class with questions that no one wants to answer.
AMST 135 is a great choice if you need to fulfill your GE requirements. There was a lot of reading but it is manageable. The lectures were interesting and Professor Chavez showed a lot of documentaries and videos throughout the semester. It was an ideal GE. There was one midterm, a paper, and the final.
Very easy GE class, only one paper, one midterm and one final. TAs are easy graders. Professor Chavez tries hard to engage her students to go to classes she even gave out extra credits for in-class assignments finished on time. Readings are manageable and educational. Exams are easy. TAKE HER!
really easy GE that counts for more than one -- last semester had two papers and one final (which is directly the study guide). interesting material, lots of extra credit opportunities, and easy grading by her and the TA. know lots of people that started papers the night before and got high As on them, highly recommend for an easy A
This was a very reasonable GE class - would recommend! There were only two essays, both reasonable in length and topic, and the final (IDs & short essay) was also pretty do-able. Alicia keeps lectures interesting with videos and she posts the ppt's online. You can tell she's passionate about the subject and I definitely learned a lot. EC available.
She reads off powerpoint so I never went to class. Powerpoints are not uploaded on time. 1 midterm 1 final and 1 paper. sounds easy right? Your grade all depends on your TA. Mine was a tough grader but seems knowledgable than the teacher. Have to read for essay and exams. would not recommend for a GE.
This class is pretty easy, and we didn't really do much lecture at all. As long as you pay attention in discussion, you should be able to pass with a good grade. She's super enthusiastic about American Studies, and she shows lots of videos so it's not just lecture all the time. Would definitely recommend Prof. Chavez to everyone.
when she does show up to lecture, all she does is show videos, so if you want a class where you can pretty much only show up to the midterm/final/discussion section, then this is the class for you! she's obviously intelligent/passionate but i think her laziness prevents her from lecturing. pretty easy class if you put some work in.
She's a professor that you are bound to encounter in the American Studies dept. I love taking her classes. Yes, she is long-winded and easily distracted, but she genuinely cares about the material and the students. Easy grader. She also shows a lot of films. Main issue is that she never responds to emails, so jsut be sure to catch her after class.
She is just a terrible professor. She should be good at one thing: teaching, but she's awful at it. If you get a chance don't take her class. Plus I learned nothing from it.
I guess I would take this course again, as the reading materials were enjoyable and the easy A didn't hurt. However, her lectures were basically pointless, and by the end of the semester, I was skipping at least one a week. She has an awful tendency to get off-track and waste time, and her students are less than inspired.
Professor Chavez is passionate about her field but gets side tracked and off topic more often than not. The lectures end up being a showcasing of YouTube videos related to the material. The course load itself is easy to manage if you do the readings. Would overall recommend if you're looking for a solid GE.
Fairly easy GE. Lectures are irrelevant and worth skipping. You are only graded/tested on material from reading assignments (not covered in lecture). Also, TA grades everything.
A very manageable class! A lot of reading + weekly reading responses, but you will love the content discussed in class if you have a passion for chicano/ latin american studies. Alicia is very kind, passionate, and very considerate when it comes to exams. (midterm q's are released beforehand and final is a take home) LOVED this class!
The class title misleads. You only learn about Hispanics and Spanish language and read 40-60 pages every week. The professor was never involved in grading and did not provide grading rubrics which leads to the TAs grade arbitrarily. Lectures are excruciatingly boring and you can pass the class without ever being there. Not an easy A class tho.
Took this GE because it was dual credit. Took it pass/no pass, ended the class with a 92. Lectures are useless, no need to go. I just went to the discussion and did the readings. My TA was an easy grader, so the class was not hard. If you want to ace the class, just go to the lectures and discussions, pay attention, and do the work.
Professor Chavez was super nice throughout the semester. Gave many EC opportunities and you can tell that she really is passionate about the material she teaches. Take her!!! Easy A and you'll learn a lot and read some great books along the way.
Chavez rambles a lot during lecture so you don't really need to pay attention especially online. She cut the 3 hour class in half so that we could use the other half asynchronously which is nice. Her questions are pretty easy and basically if you participate/say anything she'll be happy. The readings can be long but worth it and the movies are good
Professor Chavez is super nice and makes the class super manageable. It's graded with only a few assignments + a weekly paragraph on the readings. We were given the midterm questions in advance and graded on a paper and final. Super nice prof and would definitely take again!
Alicia Chavez was one of my favorite professors I've ever had! She's amazing, caring, funny, and makes learning so fun. She presents great material in class and I learned so much from her. As long as you do the work she gives you, which is two papers, a midterm, and final research paper, you'll do well. She's a professor I won't forget!
Professor Chavez is a very caring professor who is clearly very passionate about what she teaches. I had her for AMST 342 and the subject matter and readings were very interesting. She isn't a super tough grader and gives extra credit opportunities. However, she rambles and gets off topic during her lectures, and takes forever to grade things.
It's a class focused on lots of readings and lots of lecturing, although she gets sidetracked easily and will talk about other things through the class. You watch movies and videos too. Lots of essays, but they aren't hard, just include a lot of good textual evidence and make a strong argument and you'll be good. Interesting class.
Good class overall, I didn't find lectures to be too enlightening since she would talk about different things but the topics in discussion are more focused and interested.
Didn't finish the course yet but I DO NOT recommend taking this professor. She never responds to email even during midterm seasons which makes it extremely difficult on an online setting. You'll probably learn better on your own because she tends to go off on a tangent and then none of the materials she's talking about in lecture makes sense anymor
Worst professor here at USC, gives you rubric to the paper one day before the paper is due. Does not reply to emails. Do not take her
Amazing professor. Dr. Chavez is most definitely a underrated professor. She's fun and smart and knows her stuff. I couldn't respect her more. Do your work and its and easy A. And if she see's potential in you she'll write you a letter of rec. Take her class.
She's phenomenal. Amazing professor who knows what she's talking about. I've learned so much from her. I've taken both her classes. I couldn't get enough of her knowledge. And the books she assigns are jaw dropping. Take her class. Easy A.
Took forever to give back grades on the essays
Professor Chavez is a great professor. For this class specifically, I was astonished by the history of LA. You can tell Professor Chavez is passionate about American and LatinX Studies. She may take long with grading and be a bit unorganized at times. But overall, you will learn a lot from this class. She also motivates students to go beyond.
I loved having professor Chavez! Her lectures were engaging and amazing. She really does know her stuff and she cares about her students success.
Professor Chavez is a really nice and caring person. She is very understanding if you email her. That being said, her zoom skills have much to be desired, class randomly switched between synchronous and asynchronous. Attendance isn't mandatory but the content is dense. You don't really need to read much of the material since the midterms are essays
One of the easiest classes I took. Grade depends on weekly discussion posts (one para each) and a couple essays that at max were 1.2k WC requirement. TA was extremely nice and forgiving, essays were very forgivingly graded. Prof. had some health issues at the end so canceled lectures for last couple weeks. Interesting subject, would rec for GE-B.
Easy A if you do the readings & put some effort into the big assignments. The class is very interesting and genuinely enjoyable to learn in. Graded by 1 paragraph weekly posts, participation, take-home midterm & final, & a final research presentation. Very reasonable grader & cares about her students. Does not put grades into the gradebook often.
Loved my discussion section, but Chavez always had a new excuse not to host lecture. As a result I stopped going after week 3, but seemed not to matter since there is a relatively light amount of work.
She is the G.P. A.T. Greatest professor of all time
This is unlike your typical American History course you would take in HS. All the reading assignments were actually very interesting. You will have a much better understanding of why America is precisely the way it is today with carceral, immigration, economic, and racial issues issues, to name a few. Essays were fun, which made them easy.
literally do not take this as a GE is not worth it
The fact Professor Chavez has a 3.3 is beyond me. She is truly such an inspirational professor, going to her office hours changes the trajectory of how you look at her. Her lectures are beautiful and carry so much rich history. I did not apprecaite how students did not take her classes seriously bc she truly deserves undivded attention. 10/10
I did not expect her to be this great! Absolutely loved her. She's hilarious and really cares about her students. Went on multiple outings to Dulce, all paid for by her, and overall had a great time in this class. I would say she is a pretty easy grader as long as you follow instructions and do the assignments. Recommend for a GESM130.
Honestly what a dub of professor. She is really knowledgeable professor and provides straightforward assignments with clear-cut grading criteria. She brought us food and took us out to cafe during classes so she definitely cares about her students. Pretty easy grader as long as you follow the instructions. EASY A!
EzPz GG to fail its a skill issue on god.
Professor Chavez is a very kind woman and seems to be very drawn into Latino studies. Although I know she has been going through some issues I found her to be very unprofessional. Multiple times she cancelled class 10-15 minutes into lecture through email on the day of with the whole class present. Class was cancelled for weeks on end.
I thought this was a really easy GE. A lot of readings/films to watch but honestly pretty interesting. Take home midterm and final and all graded pretty leniently. Prof is pretty kind and would recommend for a GE class
Nice, but rambles a lot. She cancelled class very often and even while class was supposed to have already started, so I never even bothered going. Doesn't take attendance. Graded on 2 midterm, 2 final essays based on art/films/literature. TA Karlynne also rambled on higher topics but I think she thought we learned more in class than we did. Easy GE
Chavez is a very kind and considerate professor! She really understands that summer classes are flexible and only does online lectures for 1.5 hours (not the full 3). She talks a lot, but grades nicely and holds interesting enough discussions. Easily the best online summer GE C. There are 3 essays and daily 6 sentence assignments, fair & manageable
Cancelled class so often that I stopped going because it was going to be cancelled anyway. Lectures felt disorganized and didn't follow slides. She is very unprofessional and it felt like a waste of my time and money taking the class. Not a lot of work however and what there was isn't difficult so there is one benefit. TAs and discussion are good.
awful
It seems like this class was respected before, but this semester it was awful. Professor Chavez took an extremely long time to grade, rarely responded to emails, and her lectures were not substantial. It felt like she treated class like her personal podcast- saying a lot w/out saying anything at all. This class was a waste of my time and tuition.
never ever take this prof. ik shes going thru a lot but that rlly obviously trickled down to the students and quality of class. she was so disorganized and all over the place but then expected us to be perfect.
Genuinely have never felt this bothered by a prof. She is unreliable and I sadly feel like I gained nothing from this class when I was so excited to take it. She could never even meet her own deadlines and consistently canceled class last minute. The semester ended and she has still only graded 3 assignments, always coming up with a new excuse.
Chavez: she is very nice, very easy, but very disorganized. 10/10 recommend but you won't learn anything it's a great easy A class and there's like two papers and a presentation. She's disorganized but who cares, if you want to learn then read the books, if you want a nice teacher who is funny and cancels class a lot and an easy A take this class.
Prof. Chavez is very intelligent, but she gets off topic a LOT. Halfway through the semester, I stopped doing the readings because we never had time to discuss them in class. She's very disorganized, so due dates and guidelines were always very confusing. She also wanted us to buy like, 5 diff. books, and we didn't even use them. It was so sad :(
She waited until USC's grade submission deadline to input ALL grades. She would always be late or not show up to class at all, she communicates this 30 mins before class which is annoying because so many students would show up to class confused. Super easy GE but very unorganized professor. Do as you will with this information.
After going to the first two lectures of the semester I realized it was useless and thankfully never went again. Still got an A in the class. I also only ever went to discussion once. Prof Chavez is super disorganized and put grades in for everything at the end of the semester which is really annoying. Don't expect to learn anything but super easy.
This is a class u wanna take if you rly don't care about the material, but want an easy ish A. As long as you just submit the weekly summaries and grind out the 3 essays, you should be good. She'll literally tell you the topic to write the essays about in class so you can either fade class or sit there and just do other stuff and you'll be fine.
This class itself was not that difficult but the grades for the weekly summary only got posted after the end of the class.
she will genuinely look over YOUR thoughts and move on to her own stuff. talks so much without saying anything. does not grade anything until literally the last week, its ridiculous.
Talked about literally any other topic besides the course and had incredibly unclear grading.
Absolute bare-minimum effort. Lectures were mostly off-topic, class was often cancelled last-minute. Graded things late or not at all, final grades were just put directly into the portal without our assignments being given grades in brightspace. No feedback on essays. She would assign lots of reading but not expect anyone to actually do it.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. Don't listen to the other reviews--this class is a complete waste of time. You learn nothing. You waste 4+ hours a week listening to her talk about nothing and make up her own words. Even if you want an "easy A" or "light work" I seriously suggest you look elsewhere. She will just waste your time and money.
take this class for an easy A and no tracked attendance
HIST 361: Let me start by saying I think professor Chavez is a sweet lady, but she cannot teach to save her life! She took over our class around week 5, but every single lecture felt like week 1. Talk about a disorganized yapper! I could not keep up with anything she assigned because she COULDN'T keep up with anything she assigned…Lord FIX IT!
TA Julian is goated :)
Easy class. But my goodness, if you are going to assign that much reading and expect it to be done very quickly. You need to reciprocate the effort and have our grades done in a timely manner, not last second. Unacceptable. And it would be helpful if she could respond to student emails. Not leave us guessing.
Took her over the summer. She didn't grade anything. Then the grade shows up on OASIS as NS meaning she didn't submit any grades for the entire class. Meanwhile, she ghosted inquiries about this. It came off as a bit unprofessional.
Attendance required; lectures are useless and boring. Not so much homework, but you do need to read a ton. I honestly don't know what is going on with her because she has not been grading anything since midterm 1, which was over two months ago. The whole class have "NS" showing on their transcripts because this adorable lady did not do her job :)
Amazing teacher, no complaints!
She has a lot of insight for her lectures, however she easily gets side track and starts taking about other things. She does not grade on time. So you're going to have to constantly remind her to grade your assignments. Her grading critera isn't clear, she changes what she wants every class. Easy grader on small things, harsher on midterms
Very disorganized. Forgot to post submission link for our 2nd midterm and was unresponsive to me & my classmates' emails for 10 days Class itself consists mostly of discussion. Very little instruction from prof herself. When she does speak, often rambles & goes off-topic Easy class; just feels like a waste of time.
Her lectures are long, boring, and have lots of tangents. She also takes forever to grade
She just yaps and assigns reading. The discussion section is pretty chill and the class satisfies two GEs. Don't expect to learn anything or engage at all during the lectures, she just goes on and on.
if ur considering taking a class with this professor... think again. if it is mandatory to ur graduation requirements... consider changing ur career trajectory. i would go into that class ready to take on the day and come out the shrivel of a woman, devoid of my will to live, laugh, and love.
Never go to lecture. It is a waste of your time as she reads DIRECTLY from the slides and is vague. I thought the past reviews were being dramatic but do NAWT expect much from this class. Changed our final exam format the week before the exam which was annoying, but the class overall is an easy-ish A. P.S. essay prompts make no sense
The most unorganized professor you'll ever have. She doesn't grade anything on time, she never even posted a submission box for our midterm until two weeks after it was due, and she doesn't respond to emails. She doesn't stick to the grading rubric she releases for assignments either. Classes are useless because she goes on long tangents.
honestly didn't really interact with her, you don't have to go to every lecture because the slides are posted and she just reads off them. discussion was chill and the workload is manageable, a lot of assigned reading but you can skim most of it. overall fine for a ge but there's probably better ones out there.
Pretty easy class that covers two GEs; lectures are not mandatory, and exams are pretty chill, just a lot of memorizing. However, she only reads off the slides, so lectures are super boring. Loved my TA and really only learned during discussion sections!
She was the most unorganized professor ever. Last minute, she changed the format for our exams and expected everyone to write an insane amount of essays. Very horrible teaching style, will not take again. I am not impressed by this class. GE worst than my major classes, 0/10. I am not proud. Also, seems like she is not in touch with her TA's.
Grade matters on your TA, she won't ever be accessible outside of class or email dont bother. Study and memorize for the tests again tests and midterms depend on your TA so get to know them well and show effort.
As every other review says, this teacher is bad. Switched around the format of things last minute. Your grade depends on your TA, I got A's on everything all year, wrote my final essays the same as I'd been doing all year and got a B on it - and then they won't show you how they graded your final.
