She's hard, but she knows what she's talking about. She pushes you to do well and cares about students.
She's a bit tough, but you will be a better writer once you leave her class!
I just wish she taught ENG 111.
she is a wonderful person and a gifted teacher. She is a bit tough, but she is always willing to lend a helping hand.
she was alright, but you must attend class, she gives reading quizes and she gives at the most 6 papers. it wasn't too bad
She always helped and made it very clear all of what she required and she gave extra credit.
She is such a great teacher. I have learned a lot in her class and I am planning on taking her next semester. She may not be the easiest teacher, but she is the best.
She is an amazing teacher. She is very tough, but always helpful. The papers are pretty easy, but she gives reading quizzes. She also gives extra credit.
I really hate writing papers, so i usually dread english. But I do have to say that this teacher is very helpful!! She is a tough grader on the papers, but she let us goto WTS to revise them for a better grade. I did that for all except about 1 or 2 of my papers and got an A-. Goto class, there are quizzes. Just put an effort and you will be fine!
Wonderful professor. Gives regular reading quizzes, so be sure to read what she assigns for homework. And don't worry about the "reading," she is very light on her assignments. Two papers in this class, two exams, two group projects. An easy A if you do the homework and attend class.
Shes an alright lady. Read when she tells you to cause you'll have quizzes on the reading. You have 3 essays, and you have a chance to get 10 points back on the essays by going to the writing center. Just don't question her views or opinions on things.
Just do what she tells you to do and you will be fine. And show up for class because she DOES follow the university policy about being absent. Other than that don't stress it.
awesome teacher
She is ridiculous. She expects you to have her opinions and only her opinions. Even if you write something that is valid and correct, she will mark it down if it isn't exactly what she thinks. She is condescending, talking down to us like she's much older and wiser (not that much older). Serious entitlement issues. Don't take her!
Wow, sounds like the other person is bitter because they are getting a bad grade or something. Prof Defonzo is awesome! She is clearly very passionate about the topic of our course, and she wants us to be as well. I recommend her!
She is good in the classroom, knows what she's talking about. However, in all of her responses to my papers she gave only criticism, no constructive criticism. When I asked a question in an email, I got a very condescending response back. Assignments are pretty easy, not a lot of reading other than the novels assigned.
Like some of the other raters said, she's very condescending. Lectures are interesting, but her grading sucks and she is often unnecessarily rude when someone asks a question.
She gives lots of stupid quizzes on the readings, asks obscure questions on the quizzes. Attendance is strict.
We don't have major papers just minor reader responses that are really easy if you do the reading. However, we do read every night and sometimes we do have short easy quizzes at the beginning of class.
She taught me how to write an amazing paper. Even though her class was difficult at times, you should take her class. If you ask for help, she grades you easier. She looks for improvement, rather than skill. She is funny, and has great lectures. Just do the reading, and do the peer reviews.
At the beginning of the semester, I didn't like her class, but after meeting with her, she expressed to me that reading the stories are important!! Without the reading knowledge, you'll probably fail. As said before, attendance is mandatory in her classroom as well participation. She likes it when you talk and give your opinion every class.
She is a great professor. She doesn't play around when it comes to work. The class is very interestin and she is a great professor. There is a lot of reading but she explains everything well in the next class. Highly recommended.
Strict but fair. Do what she says and you'll be fine.
I'm an average student and I got an A. She doesn't fool around; she's serious about the work. You have to participate and come to class or you'll fail. She makes you work. IN ALL SERIOUSNESS: DO WHAT SHE SAYS, YOU'LL GET THE A. i did.
She is pretty fair. If you do what she says you will pass. She is, however, kind of strict.
Great teacher all around
Great eye candy, but you really have to take her on face value. The overall agreement in my class was one of contempt.
Very easy do wat she tells you go to extra credit you will get an A i even failed a paper abd got an A also be sure to read the stories she assigns itll only be about 4 pages when she tells you to read just make sure u do and make sure you speak in class lastly ten quizes ranomly throghout the year based on the readings she assigns. EASY A
Overall, she's a pretty good teacher. She can be a hardass and pretty strict sometimes, but it's nothing ridiculous. She really is a good teacher, but kinda weird as a person. You'll definitely learn a lot in her class if you follow along.
Do the readings, get an A on the quizzes. Take notes about the readings in class get an A on the exams. Oh and good eye candy.
Awesome teacher, one of the best I have had so far. Definitely loves her work, and explains things clearly and has a witty sense of humor. Not bad to look at so its easy to pay attention i class. Attendance is mandatory. Poetry Project Presentation, 10 2-question quizes, and midterm and final. Not Bad, DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!
This teacher asks opinion based questions on her exams and as long as you write exactly the opinion she expressed during lecture you will but fine. But, if you express you OWN valid, opinion, she will take off massive amounts of points.
I love Her!! she help me grow as a person and as a writing..I had her for literature and i made an A..and i had her for english and made an A...i got As on all her papers..come to class..participate and read! nice discussions
Great professor, very knowledgeable and has a passion for the class and teaching. Read the assignments and pay attention. She covers everything very well, makes it understandable. Open to questions and willing to help. Tests are 4 short essay, 10 quizzes (easy if you read), and 5 blogs. By far one of my favorite professors in my 4 years here.
Ms. Defonzo is one of the most helpful teachers I have had in college thus far. If you want to improve in your writing skills, you will benefit from taking her class. Simply do what she tells you and you'll get a good grade; which shouldn't be hard because she's clear on all of her assignments.
Even if English is not your favorite subject, Professor DeFonzo makes things simple for you. The class is broken into four papers 750-900 words each. Not too much emphasis on grammar practice but it does exist. Overall she is a great teacher and is willing to help you with anything. Do not show up to class late because she will not let you in.
She was a decent teacher. Sometimes her "clear" instructions weren't so clear, but if you ask questions, it should clear up anything you might have a problem with. The research paper coincides with the toulmin so make sure you choose a topic that you really enjoy writing about. Other than that, it's a pretty straightforward class
She grades papers stricter than I have ever seen in my life. She is pretty cool and attractive, but I would not recommend her at all unless your doing it because she is cool.
Professor Defonzo is very clear about her expectations at the beginning of the semester. As long as you do all of the homework, you should do relatively well. She seemed to have a bit of a superiority complex over the students. Exams are not predictable or an accurate measure of your performance in the class.
Very good teacher when it comes to teaching material but she has a major attitude. She tells you what is expected and doesnt except anything less than that. Everything you do is turned in online. MUST buy textbook because its used in almost every class
I love prof. Defonzo. All of her instructions are clear and she sticks to her guns about it. She is extremely helpful and I received an A on every essay because of her help. Go to conferences they help a lot in 10 min. and see her during office hours if you have questions. She will help you to succeed. I've never done so well in English before her!
I went into her class a little skeptical about being in her class but I thoroughly enjoyed it. She had hw assignments that were due before class but are one point so it doesn't affect your grade. There are only papers to do for the class and that's what you spend the semester working on. Barely had class because of 10 min conferences.
Professor DeFonzo is great! I took her Honors Comp. class, and enjoyed every minute of it. There are only three essays. They require a lot of time, but it truly helps you grow into a better writer. Also, she does help you with any questions related to your essay. I will definitely be taking another one of her classes.
Professor DeFonzo is by far my favorite professor yet. If you take her class readings will not be boring and she WILL make sure you understand everything. Be ready to take notes because everything you'll need to know will be written on the board. Be sure to read because there are pop quizzes on the readings a total of 10. Take her its worth it!
The lecture materials provided were very helpful along with her podcast. 4 books, weekly db post, 3 journals and one final. I received a B only because I forgot to do some of the db post. Do the work, show you're interested and there is no way you will fail. READING IS MANDATORY IN ORDER TO PASS. TAKE HER!! She is very helpful
Great teacher.. Lit is my least favorite subject and she made it worthwhile. If you are in the honors college take post Apocalyptic literature.
Ms. Defonzo is definately my favorite professor by far. She is an excellent teacher. I personally hate reading, but the discussions that we had in class made reading worthwhil. She will never hesitate to help you if you need it. Not to mention that she will never give you long essays to write.
I TOOK PROFESSOR DEFONZO'S CLASS FOR A ENGLISH LIT CREDIT AND HAD TO DROP BECAUSE OF HOW HARD THE CLASS WAS. SHE GRADES VERY HARD AND GIVES LOTS OF POP QUIZZES WHICH MAKES YOU READ EVERY DETAIL OF EVERY STORY. SHE ALSO MAKES YOU READ A GRAPHIC NOVEL ON THE WALKING DEAD AND I WAS NOT INTERESTED AT ALL. HARDEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD.
I highly suggest that you do not take Professor DeFonzo for ANY English class. She says she cares about your grades but she really does not at all. She won't help you at all when you have questions and shes gets mad if you send emails. Why have an email for school if you get mad that students are sending you questions? Worst class I have ever taken
Amazing professor. Took her for honors class: Post Apoc Lit. Not an A class if you are not willing to work at it. She is available for help when needed and she is clear with her expectations. Hilarious professor who loves what she does.
Defonzo is a great professor! She is very detailed in notes, (MAKE SURE YOU TAKE NOTES) and read closely. If you have an opinion- speak up. But fun class overall, I"d take it again.
A great professor. Not the easiest class you will have to work for a good grade. Just make sure to read everything closely. She loves the material and makes the class super fun. I would take this time and time again no matter how hard the class is.
Overall an amazing teacher. She is very personable and nice to everybody. Highly recommended!!
For Post-Apocalyptic: Three novels, two journals, one presentation, pop quizzes, midterm, final, three extra credit opportunities, straight to the point, not easy but very enjoyable
Amazing professor & my absolute favorite class. She was my professor for honors writing about pop culture and I looked forward to class everyday. Participation is key, and its so much fun if you do participate. No textbook is required.
10 DB, 3 jounrals, 1 paper. Sounds easy but it is not. Very unclear in her expectations. And a hard grader. There is a ton of reading. The paper is majority of your grade so there is not much chance of raising your grade if you do not do well on it. I would not take again.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had in my life. Unless you are a strong reader and can pick out every single tiny detail, I would not suggest you take any of her classes. The lectures are long and boring. She never directly answers questions she will tell you to read the syllabus. Very horrible professor!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also if you're taking her post apocalyptic course she does these "survival skills" tests where you may have an activity outside. She doesn't care if it's snowing you WILL HAVE to participate or get a bad grade. She does not post grades so you'll never know how well you're doing. JUST DON'T TAKE HER! SHE IS THE WORST AND WILL TRY TO FAIL YOU!
An AMAZING professor. She is fun and energetic. She takes the time to explain things to you. Makes it interesting even when the material isn't. She is by far the best professor I have had so far. Highly recommend her to anyone taking intro to lit. Her tests are straight forward, and she will go over thing thoroughly , so take good notes.
Absolute terrible feedback and it was difficult to get through the class. Took it as an animal welfare and enjoyed the subject matter. The 2,000+ word paper is killer but you get that with every 211c. Also, no required textbook.
I took her class for Intro to Lit and I loved it. God forbid you actually have to do work in a class to do well. Do ALL the readings and understand them and you'll pass for sure! She makes the class enjoyable to the best she can and very high spirited. You won't be dissapointed taking her class.
Very condescending, and ambiguous. She treats her students like they are children and not adults. Does not welcome any opinions, or interpretations other than her own. She should consider teaching at the middle school level.
I took post-apocalyptic lit, and she failed me. I knew I had a solid C in the class and with the survival skills she must have failed me. I never knew my progression in the class, and now I have to do grade forgiveness. She's the worst professor I have ever had at ODU.
Prof DeFonzo is the ish. She doesn't play any games though, so don't think you'll get by if you're a slacker. She's very passionate about her work and wants nothing more than to help you grow as a student. With that being said, she requires your respect as well as putting in real work to rise to her expectations. BTW DON'T SHOW UP LATE, LIKE EVER.
Prof DeFonzo was awesome. Took her for Banned books. We read three books, journal entries for all and weekly DB's. She gives voice lectures and provides a clear grading scale. She is nice and uses email frequently. I loved her class and the way she taught. Assignments can seem intimidating, but they're not. Just know your due dates!
The material is extremely interesting and a very enjoyable class. 3 days are dedicated to doing survival skills outside. However, She is an extremely hard grader and if you are looking for an A stay away from the class. 1 EC assignment that can bump you a letter grade. Only 3 books, short stories, and very few assignments but extremely in depth.
I took banned books online. I only got to know her from her podcasts. She is very passionate about banned books. She can seem a little condescending in tone, but I think it stems from the fire within her. My favorite part of the class was making a video for banned books week. This class certainly opened my eyes to this problem!
She can come off as a bit mean at first but at the end of the day shes still a chill teacher. You have to write three major papers in the class and you dont have much hw. Shes open to helping you out if she sees youre putting in effort and best of all she likes stranger things!
Professor DeFonzo knows her stuff about English but comes off a little rude. She's very sarcastic and often times condescending towards students. She encourages class participation, yet will make you instantly regret it if you don't say what she was thinking. Her grading criteria is also pretty vague. Not too tough a class if you work hard though.
I was really excited for this class, which is why I was so disappointed with this professor. She is extremely bias - if you do not write what she wants, you lose points. She is very rude and constantly talks down to her students. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to want to help you learn or grow. It seems like her students are a burden to her.
Mrs. Defonzo is very bias. She grades any paper whether she thinks its incorrect or correct, not if your evidence is supported by literary theories. Don't expect to get high A's even if you are the best writer. She grades off her own opinion. Don't recommend anyone to take this class.
She's a very tough grader, but will let you revise your papers. She definitely knows what she's teaching well, and her lectures are very effective. My writing skills have improved for sure. Her class was tough, but so rewarding.
Professor DeFonzo was a great teacher. She gave clear feedback during conferences and offers rewrites for all of her major works! Participate in discussions and do your work and you will do great in her class.
I got an A- in this class, but would't recommend Defonzo. A shame bc Banned Books is an important and interesting subject. She seemed to go out of her way in making assignments unclear. During final project she only gave one chance at feedback, lots of students only got, "you must start over," and were left them to struggle. Really discouraging
Extremely knowledgeable and her courses are innovative. She is a tough grader because she expects the best from her students. She can come off as a bit abrasive, but she's from Jersey so as long as you have the right attitude about it you'll be fine. Highly respected, hard working lecturer. If you put in the effort and ask questions, you'll be okay
INcredibly frustrating and likes to create work that is difficult to understand. Very frustrating if you are not interested in english or literature. In fact I came into the class enjoying most of the things involved in english and left hating most of them.
Prof DeFonzo is extremely knowledgable and passionate about the material, but she makes you work for your grade. The lectures were actually really interesting and thought provoking. Do the hw because there's pop quizzes, NEVER be late, and participate in class.
She is unapproachable and very condescending during lecture. 3 papers, and instructions were often unclear. Attendance, reading, and lots of participation is mandatory. However, she gives clear feedback during conferences, and she offers rewrites for the first 2 papers.
Definitely tough when it comes to grading. Her feedback can be harsh but it's really helpful. There are 3 pieces you have to write over the semester so use your time wisely! The in-class portion can be fun, as long as you're engaged in the conversation and caught up on the readings she assigns for homework. If you don't participate... good luck
Professor Defonzo is great at teaching, but can come off rude and disrespectful. She stated multiple times that she would take points off for asking questions she already answered. There are 3 main papers that account for the majority of your grade. If you start early, they are easy, but she gets frustrated if you are ever confused.
Definitely a tough class but not boring at all. She pushes you to think. Her methodology can seem abrasive but her passion for what she teaches is evident. Be detail oriented when reading because some of the pop quizzes were rough, and don't even think about showing up late.
At the beginning of the semester I was terrified. Professor Defonzo can come across as rude and condescending, but her classes are amazing and if you participate and pay attention you will do well. She truly is very helpful outside of class, and if you do the reading she gives and work hard it will pay off.
Prof. DeFonzo is an amazing teacher and this was one of the best classes I have taken. She's really understanding and she doesn't ever make you feel stupid. You have to read the material and participate in class, but the discussions are fun and useful. Take this one if you are an honors student and need a lit class!
She is very strict on what she looks for in papers and assignments and doesn't offer much feedback on assignments. Sarcastic at times, would tell you to use the discussion panel for questions on things she can answer.
When someone says sharks in Nemo represent humans destroying everything, that should be a red flag. Do not take Dr. Defonzo's class if you could avoid it. Dr. Defonzo's instructions do not make sense at times. If you ask her for help or ask what she wants from an assignment, she will tell you to look at the resources, which are not always helpful.
Just dont She has the most unclear guidelines and is horrible at answering emails in a timely fashion. Gives zeros bc she makes up a madatory rule that she describes more as a suggestion Also uses audio guide w no transcript, horrendous AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I took this course online and I feel like she punishes you for being an online class. She is extremely rude and condescending, and when asking questions, she just tells you to put it on the discussion board instead of answering. The homework questions are vague, but you will get docked points if you don't answer exactly how she wants.
I took Professor DeFonzo's online English 126C the fall of 2024. I found the material to be easy to navigate, but the professor herself is very difficult. She is very condescending and rude to students and never gives much of an explanation as to why she gives you the grade that she does. She also goes on about the book she wrote continuously.
No clear instructions/vague rubric/treated students different. Prioritize adherence to her opinions over original thought stifling creativity/personal expression. Her lack of professionalism made class feel more like chore than learning experience. JUST DON'T if you love yourself. There better classes worth money/effort that wont feel suffocation.
I would not take a class from Professor DeFonzo again. Assignments and participation exercises are extremely vague in instructions, scarce email communication only make it worse. Assignments also are in unconventional formats for a writing class. "Podcasts" instead of seminars. Provides no feedback on assignments. Absolute lack of professionalism.
If you are interested in an immersive, thought-provoking class, Defonzo will deliver! There is a lot of homework, and you have to exercise your reading and writing skills, but I really enjoyed this class and the discussions you had to participate in.
The instructions for every single assignment were either faulty or unclear. She then graded our assignments on an all-or-nothing scale, and failed many of us with very little to no feedback whatsoever. If you ask for clarification she just belittles you and then leaves you wondering. If you don't want unwarranted 0's, I suggest hiding from DeFonzo.
This course is focused on 1) reading and 2) discussion. There are journals and there are projects, not a lot of extra homework so make sure you do those on time and well! She says to communicate any obstacles you have, but don't count on it everytime, there's not a lot of wiggle room. It sounds intimidating, but honestly, she's still pretty cool.
